Plan Ahead

Look ahead to Lent's end and reserve the Triduum dates--Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil--so that you will be available to watch and pray at your parish.

Ang Magmahal Sa Sariling Wika
Posted by: Chico on: Marso 5, 2007

Para sa Kaniyang Hindi Napapagod na Magmahal.

***
Mayroong nagsabi na ang taong di marunong magmahal sa sariling wika, ay higit pa ang amoy sa mabahong isda: Filipino ba ang tinutukoy dito? Tagalog? Ilokano, Kampampangan o kanya kanya nating “wika”? What do you think?

***

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I have no problem with our sariling wika, tagalog, it´s my mother tongue. But here in Germany I always address myself a Bol-anon. I truly feel bisaya through and through. So it pains me to the heart if bisayan are good housemaids and that I´m often called Inday. These are only cliché.

It´s a bane for sure. An independent woman is mostly intelligent, she is not boring, self-reliant and flexible. During hard times she could be the best partner, best in team work and resilient. In our country you could see Filipino women who struggles hard to to put the kids in school. They work double time as  homekeeper , finacial analyst( saan kukuha nga pera, saan pwedeng makautang, career oriented or simply a carenderia manager.
An independent woman will never be a boon or a curse to man therefore there is no fear that their state of masculinity will be put into question.

How To Tips / Think Twice When Eating Tilapia
March 03, 2009, 06:41:14 AM
Do you have any information on the health benefits/non-benefits of the fish called tilapia? I've seen conflicting reports. Dr. Gourmet Says...

There are no recipes for tilapia on the Dr. Gourmet website. Part of this is because I am not all that fond of the flavor and texture of this fish. I find tilapia pretty bland and dry.

The other reason is because the research that we have about the health effects of eating fish has been done mostly with fatty fish such as tuna, halibut and salmon. Leaner fish like tilapia and catfish have much less Omega 3. But... is that a problem?

It appears that it might be. In a study published last summer in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association researchers found that there is not very much Omega-3 fat in tilapia (we knew that). The issue is that there are high levels of Omega-6 fats and this might actually be dangerous. There is controversy about the importance of the ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats in foods. Some feel that having a high ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 can actually create an inflammatory state that could worsen issues such as heart disease. There is enough evidence to be concerned, however. (The authors of the study also note that farm raised catfish have similar ratios.)

So it might be best to not make tilapia the center of your diet.

One key that I do try and get across is that too much of any food is a problem. There's a balance in eating a wide variety of seafood including salmon, halibut, drum, tilapia, tuna, shrimp, mussels, cod, flounder and on and on. That's the best way to make sure that you are not only eating healthy but also enjoying what you eat to the fullest.

Women of the Philippines

Edmundo Ortega

In the Nov 26 2007 issue of Time Magazine, there is a special report that should give us all cause for pride in an unexpected area.

The Swiss based World Economic Forum releases an annual list that ranks all  128 countries in the world on the basis of gender equality. The report measures the discrepancies between men and women in four categories:  1) educational attainment, 2) economic participation and opportunity,  3) political empowerment, and 4) health and survival.

At the top of the list, from No. 1 to 5 are Sweden , Norway , Finland , Iceland and New Zealand - all OECD countries with very strong socialist leanings. And there at No. 6, lo and behold, the country that has married Hispanic macho tendencies with Asian paternalism - what do you know=2 0-  the PHILIPPINES .

As Pinoys, we've always known we come from a society of dominant females but this is official confirmation.

Other countries of note on the list are: Germany - No. 7, Spain - No. 10, the U.K. - No. 11, Australia - No. 17, Canada - No. 18, the United States - No. 31, Switzerland - No. 40 and France - No. 51.

The next ranking Asian country after the Philippines is Thailand at No. 52.  China is No. 73, Singapore is No. 77 , Japan is No. 91, and India is No.. 114.  The Muslim
countries are bunched up towards the end of the list.

In a time when there is precious little to cheer about in the old country, it is nice to know that our sheilas are world leaders and that in the realm of gender equality policies,   we lead the way for other societies.

Go Pinays!

Berlinale is a well visited film festival because of its down to earth, real films. This is a far cry from the glamour of Hollywood.
This years winner is a film from Peru, La Teta Asustada ( The milk of Pain/Agony).

about a fluent New York family who worked so hard and employed a Filipina nanny for their daughter. The sons of this nanny suffers so much because of the absence of their mother.

A real relaxation

Not only your mind but your hormones goes wild during sex. Our hormonal glands floods in our bodies till orgasm is reached. Muscles and nerves are tensed and burdened.
After climax, the body slowly relaxes; feeling of happiness, contentment and a pleasant tiredness overcomes us. No wonder that sex is a sure guaranty of a good sleep

Letting aggression go

According to experts, sex is good to cut down aggression and stress.
Stress causes hypertension and clogged arteries.  After reaching orgasm, our body relaxes and oxytocin fills our brain that put us in the state of well being and happiness, it simply washes stress hormones right away.

Elixir

During sexual intercourse, endorphine is released. After climax, the muscles relaxes and pain will go. This is an excellent therapy against backpains, headaches and the like. So take note  if a partner says not now because I have a headache, this alibi is not valid.

itutuloy...

Rihanna and Chris Brown on Feb. 7

Photo by: Lester Cohen / WireImage
Rihanna and Chris Brown are back together, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

The pair have reunited almost three weeks after Brown, 19, allegedly battered the "Umbrella" singer on Feb. 8, a source tells PEOPLE.

"They're together again. They care for each other," says the source. The on-again couple are currently spending time together at one of Sean "Diddy" Combs's homes, on Miami Beach's Star Island.

Adds the source: "While Chris is reflective and saddened about what happened, he is really happy to be with the woman he loves."

In its latest issue, PEOPLE reports that Brown called Rihanna on her 21st birthday one week ago. "He called to wish her happy birthday," a source told the magazine. "They've reached out to each other. It's been mutual."

Brown was booked by LAPD for making criminal threats but the case has not yet been presented to the District Attorney, who will ultimately determine which charges, if any, will be prosecuted.

The odd looking fish, which has rare, forward-facing eyes like humans and a secretive nature, was first spotted a little more than a year ago in the busy harbor of Ambon Island, Indonesia.

According to University of Washington's (UW) Ted Pietsch, Psychedelica is an apt name, given the absurd way the fish swim, some with so little control that they look intoxicated.

Members of Histiophryne psychedelica, or H. psychedelica, don't so much swim as hop.

Each time they strike the seafloor, they use their fins to push off and they expel water from tiny gill openings on their sides to jettison themselves forward.

With tails curled tightly to one side, which surely limits their ability to steer, they look like inflated rubber balls bouncing hither and thither.

While other frogfish and similar species are known to jettison themselves up off the bottom before they begin swimming, none have been observed hopping.

It's just one of the behaviors of H. psychedelica never observed in any other fish, according to Pietsch, UW professor of aquatic and fishery sciences and curator of fishes at the UW Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.

Adults of H. psychedelica are fist-sized with gelatinous bodies covered with thick folds of skin that protect them from sharp-edged corals as they haunt tiny nooks and crannies of the harbor reef.

Fins on either side of their bodies have, as with other frogfish, evolved to be leg-like, and members of H. psychedelica actually prefer crawling to swimming.

The species has a flattened face with eyes directed forward.

While other anglerfish change their coloring depending on the environment, the new species appears to maintain its wild striping no matter the surroundings.

The coloring led co-author David Hall, a wildlife photographer, to speculate that the fish is mimicking corals.

DNA work has revealed that H. psychedelica joins two other species in the genus Histiophryne, though the other two are very drably colored in comparison. newkerala.com

A BUSINESSMAN who lost his mobile phone on a beach was amazed when it turned up â€" in the belly of a massive cod.
Andrew Cheatle thought his Nokia handset had been lost at sea after it slipped from his pocket.

Lost and found ... mobile phone
But a week later his girlfriend’s mobile rang and it was fisherman Glen Kerley saying he’d found the phone in a 25lb fish.

Andrew got the handset back, dried it out â€" and amazingly it still works.

Andrew, 45, said: “I was messing about with my dog and my phone must have fallen out and been swept out in the swell.

“I kept calling it but I gave up hope after a couple of days.”

He was shopping for a new phone with girlfriend Rita Smith, 33, when her mobile went off.

She told him: “Your old mobile number is calling my phone.”

Andrew continued: “She said some guy was going on about my phone and a cod so she handed it over to me and he told me where he had found it.

“I thought he was winding me up but he assured me he had caught a cod that morning and was gutting it for his fish stall and that my Nokia was inside it â€" a bit worse for wear.

“I didn’t believe him but went to meet him and found it was my phone â€" a bit smelly and battered â€" but incredibly it still worked after I let it dry out.”

Trawlerman Glen, 45, had tried to use the phone but it didn’t work. So he took out the SIM card and put it in his handset to try to trace the owner.

Glen, of Worthing, West Sussex, said: “Cod are greedy fish â€" they’ll eat anything. They have big heads and big mouths.

“I’ve found plastic cups, stones, teaspoons, batteries and I’ve also heard of someone finding false teeth in one.

“This fish was about 25lbs and about 4ft long â€" not unusual but bigger than average.

“I know what it’s like to lose your phone. It can be really frustrating. So I thought I may as well make a few calls to see if I could get it back to him.

“It was a bit smelly but I was glad to return it.”

Andrew â€" who runs an online retail company â€" still uses it.

He said: “It was working but it kept playing up so I had to get the circuit board changed in the end. But now it’s fine. I know it sounds a fishy tale but it is 100 per cent true.” The Sun

St. Leander of Seville
Feastday: February 27

St. Leander of Seville, Bishop (Feast - February 27th) Leander was born at Cartagena, Spain, of Severianus and Theodora, illustrious for their virtue. St. Isidore and Fulgentius, both bishops were his brothers, and his sister, Florentina, is also numbered among the saints. He became a monk at Seville and then the bishop of the See. He was instrumental in converting the two sons Hermenegild and Reccared of the Arian Visigothic King Leovigild. This action earned him the kings's wrath and exile to Constantinople, where he met and became close friends of the Papal Legate, the future Pope Gregory the Great. It was Leander who suggested that Gregory write the famous commentary on the Book of Job called the Moralia. Once back home, under King Reccared, St. Leander began his life work of propagating Christian orthodoxy against the Arians in Spain. The third local Council of Toledo (over which he presided in 589) decreed the consubstantiality of the three Persons of the Trinity and brought about moral reforms. Leander's unerring wisdom and unflagging dedication let the Visigoths and the Suevi back to the true Faith and obtained the gratitude of Gregory the Great. The saintly bishop also composed an influential Rule for nuns and was the first to introduce the Nicene Creed at Mass. Worn out by his many activities in the cause of Christ, Leander died around 600 and was succeeded in the See of Seville by his brother Isidore. The Spanish Church honors Leander as the Doctor of the Faith.

Yes.  I was born with half of my tongue is dark. My mother always told me to be wary of my words, since she called it la-ug dila/bâbâ.

A maranao lady in Davao City, did some jama-jama ambot kon giunsa kadto niya, unya nawala hinay hinay. Matud pa niya dili kono ko mabuhi-an ug anak kong wala ipasumpa.

Back to mental telepathy; This mental consciousness is a sort of energy that travels and reaches a certain destination. It could be a mother´s awareness that something happened to her child or a simple wish to see somebody longtime unheared, a lost friend or lover then suddenly the telephone rings or you bumped to this person.
Mental telepathy is a wish accompanied with a strong desire, can it be this desire puts extra energy? Could it be that mental telepathy is stronger to persons who had emotional ties or relationship? Why can we influence other with these mental thoughts?  Sad to say science has no clue to this phenomenon.

Bible Study / Re: Catholic City Message for Lent
February 27, 2009, 06:50:52 PM
The Holy Season of Lent
Fast and Abstinence.

It is a traditional doctrine of Christian spirituality that a constituent part of repentance, of turning away from sin and back to God, includes some form of penance, without which the Christian is unlikely to remain on the narrow path and be saved (Jer. 18:11, 25:5; Ez.  18:30, 33:11-15; Joel 2:12; Mt. 3:2; Mt. 4:17; Acts 2:38). Christ Himself said that His disciples would fast once He had departed (Lk. 5:35). The general law of penance, therefore, is part of the law of God for man.

The Church has specified certain forms of penance, both to ensure that the Catholic will do something, as required by divine law, while making it easy for Catholics to fulfill the obligation. Thus, the 1983 Code of Canon Law specifies the obligations of Latin Rite Catholics [Eastern Rite Catholics have their own penitential practices as specified by the Code of Canons for the Eastern Churches].

Canon 1250  All Fridays through the year and the time of Lent are penitential days and times throughout the entire Church.

Canon 1251  Abstinence from eating meat or another food according to the prescriptions of the conference of bishops is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities; abstinence and fast are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on the Friday of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Canon 1252  All persons who have completed their fourteenth year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the law of fast up to the beginning of their sixtieth year. Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance.

Can. 1253  It is for the conference of bishops to determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence and to substitute in whole or in part for fast and abstinence other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety.

The Church, therefore, has two forms of official penitential practices - three if the Eucharistic fast before Communion is included.

Abstinence  The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Moral theologians have traditionally considered this also to forbid soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste.

On the Fridays outside of Lent the U.S. bishops conference obtained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the US to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. Since this was not stated as binding under pain of sin, not to do so on a single occasion would not in itself be sinful. However, since penance is a divine command, the general refusal to do penance is certainly gravely sinful. For most people the easiest way to consistently fulfill this command is the traditional one, to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year which are not liturgical solemnities. When solemnities, such as the Annunciation, Assumption, All Saints etc. fall on a Friday, we neither abstain or fast.

During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere, and it is sinful not to observe this discipline without a serious reason (physical labor, pregnancy, sickness etc.).

Fasting The law of fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th Birthday [Canon 97] to the 59th Birthday [i.e. the beginning of the 60th year, a year which will be completed on the 60th birthday] to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk). Alcoholic beverages do not break the fast; however, they seem contrary to the spirit of doing penance.

Those who are excused from fast or abstinence Besides those outside the age limits, those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail, pregnant or nursing women according to need for meat or nourishment,  manual laborers according to need, guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves without giving great offense or causing enmity and other situations of moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline.

Aside from these minimum penitential requirements Catholics are encouraged to impose some personal penance on themselves at other times. It could be modeled after abstinence and fasting. A person could, for example, multiply the number of days they abstain. Some people give up meat entirely for religious motives (as opposed to those who give it up for health or other motives). Some religious orders, as a penance, never eat meat. Similarly, one could multiply the number of days that one fasted. The early Church had a practice of a Wednesday and Saturday fast. This fast could be the same as the Church's law (one main meal and two smaller ones) or stricter, even bread and water. Such freely chosen fasting could also consist in giving up something one enjoys - candy, soft drinks, smoking, that cocktail before supper, and so on. This is left to the individual.

One final consideration. Before all else we are obliged to perform the duties of our state in life. When considering stricter practices than the norm, it is prudent to discuss the matter with one's confessor or director. Any deprivation that would seriously hinder us in carrying out our work, as students, employees or parents would be contrary to the will of God.

A pair of hiking shoes is necessary to protect your feet and it must be waterproof, too. I have tried the rugged terrrain in Davao ( Mt Apo). You need to physically condition yourself or see a doctor if you are healthy enough to do some trekking. This means your blood pressure, heart efficiency and the like.

St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

(1838-1862 )

Born in Italy into a large family and baptized Francis, he lost his mother when he was only four years old. He was educated by the Jesuits and, having been cured twice of serious illnesses, came to believe that God was calling him to the religious life. Young Francis wished to join the Jesuits but was turned down, probably because of his age, not yet 17. Following the death of a sister to cholera, his resolve to enter religious life became even stronger and he was accepted by the Passionists. Upon entering the novitiate he was given the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Ever popular and cheerful, Gabriel quickly was successful in his effort to be faithful in little things. His spirit of prayer, love for the poor, consideration of the feelings of others, exact observance of the Passionist Rule as well as his bodily penancesâ€"always subject to the will of his wise superiorsâ€" made a deep impression on everyone.

His superiors had great expectations of Gabriel as he prepared for the priesthood, but after only four years of religious life symptoms of tuberculosis appeared. Ever obedient, he patiently bore the painful effects of the disease and the restrictions it required, seeking no special notice. He died peacefully on February 27, 1862, at age 24, having been an example to both young and old.

Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows was canonized in 1920.

Meatless Fridays

With the first Friday in Lent, abstinence from meat comes to the family table. Serving a meatless meal is meant to promote sacrifice.

we stay in tune with the fasting time. Have a nice weekend folks!

I would like to share my experience on this mental telepathy, it is widely rumored that mental telepathy is a bridge between mother and kids.
This sounds true to me especially if one of my kids is not feeling well. While my daughter was studying in Tech Uni Berlin, I was so upset and worried. I called her and she was, sick hoarse throat and fever. I told her to go soon as possible to see her doctor.
Later that afternoon, I got an sms that she will be observed  in the  intensive station of the Charité Hospital because of lung embolie. She recuperated after one week, her doctor told her that she came just in time.
With this posting I would like to know if you have some similar experiences, too.

Mental telepathy is also associated with extra-sensory perception, wishful thinking, clairvoyance and the like.

Bible Study / Catholic City Message for Lent
February 26, 2009, 05:59:38 PM
The CatholiCity Message
Volume XIII, Number 2 â€" February 24, 2009
Special Lenten Edition

Dear CatholiCity Citizen,

Our only purpose today is to help you begin your Lent well. Remember the initials YBLE: Your Best Lent Ever. Before we start, we saved a really, really, really good insight for last, entitled "YOU ARE NOT DEAD." Hmmnn.

1. NOW FOR THE...CONCEIT
This is one message you may want to forward to your friends and relatives--before Ash Wednesday is over. Let us being with...a conceit. Huh? A what? What is a "conceit"?

As some of us may recall from English class in the olden days, a conceit, according the fourth definition of the third meaning of the noun in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, is (drumroll):

"an organizing principle"

A Lent well-lived needs an organizing principle. May we suggest that your conceit for Lent 2009--your organizing principle--be to:

Go. For. It.

THE POPE'S PETARD
Go For It! We only have so many years on this earth, and to waste a Lent is just plain subpar for a believing Catholic. Challenge yourself spiritually in 2009. Choose extra *difficult* mortifications. Give up your very very most favorite things. Fast more often than ever before in your life. Commit to prayer or Mass or Good Friday devotions like never before in your life. Do not fall for the sadly common temptation to slide into this worldwide season of extraordinary grace like a wet towel into a hamper.

By the way, you know the Pope is going to kick petard this Lent. This is the only time of year when it is, in fact, a good idea to be more Catholic than the pope. Pope Benedict XVI practically invented the Conceit. He was going for it, like, over eighty years ago.

So plan today, right now, to look back on April 12, 2009 (Easter Sunday) with the wonderful sensation of knowing that you did your very, very best to grow closer to Jesus. That you did not squander another Lent. And let us know, on April 13, how It was goed for for you. (Yes, if you read that slowly, it makes sense. Sort of.)

CRACKERJACK, SURPRISE-INSIDE SUGGESTIONS
Some of you are psyched. Some of you are groaning. Others are nodding (hopefully in agreement, not into sleep). Many stopped reading after the word "conceit."

And, now, for some suggestions. Please forgive us for listing some of the "usual suspect" suggestions. Our goal below is to make you tremble in fear: "Oh no, not that! I can't give up that!"

Yeah, we (and you) are looking for the Perfect Oh No Not That to give up because this year, our conceit is Go For It.

And remember, there is no prohibition from "doubling" up, or choosing three, five, or seven things for Lent 2009 (Your Best Lent Ever!). We know that many of you have been intending to get off your duffs and do several of the following for years (and even decades--you know who you are).

We can only offer this bold encouragement because we are weak, slothful, wimpy, selfish, lazy, prideful, ashamed, and cowardly. Here are some suggestions to get into the spirit of GO FOR IT, followed by helpful hints, resources and comments...

1. Pray the Rosary every day.
2. Receive Communion at Mass every day.
3. Go to Confession every Friday.
4. Pray the Family Rosary every day or once a week.
5. Pray in silence 20 minutes a day.
6. Make a Eucharistic visit every day.
7. Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet (at 3:00 PM) every day.
8. Fast on bread and water one to three times per week.
9. Read a spiritual book.
10. Give a painfully large donation to charity.
11. Give a donation to charity instead of buying something for you.
12. Pray "Jesus, I love you!" in the first waking seconds of the day.
13. Listen to Catholic CDs.
14. Do something major to improve your marriage.
15. Volunteer anywhere: at your kid's school, homeless shelter
16. Visit a home for the elderly
16. Give up something you absolutely love, crave, or spend time on, or that annoys the people you love, including:

-television or your favorite television show
-television before a certain hour
-television AFTER a certain hour
-coffee
-diet soda
-donuts
-hamburgers
-chocolate, and anything with chocolate flavor
-all snacks or desserts
-movies, Netflix, movie rentals
-the Internet
-following your favorite sports team
-video games
-celebrity magazines
-golf (an objectively grave moral evil) (only kidding)
-booze
-watching golf on TV
-a destructive, irresistable "friendship"
-foul language
-picking your nose
-sports radio
-satellite radio
-music radio
-talk radio
-restaurants
-driving when you could walk
-sleeping in late on the weekends
-sleeping an "extra" ten minutes in the morning
-fast food drivethroughs
-not cooking breakfast for your kids
-shopping for clothes or food
-text messaging
-not stopping by your neighbors to say hello for weeks
-failing to visit or call your "not close by" relatives
-soap operas
-the beach (for those of you lucky enough to have one nearby)
-fishing, hunting, four-wheeling, skateboarding
-some of your "alone" time doing any hobby
-your absolute favorite, passionate hobby (aha, you just fainted!)
-nagging your husband (you know who you are)
-nagging your wife (she knows who you are)
-interrupting others
-not smiling when you arrive at the office
-knitting, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, sudoku
-knitting? (you addicts understand)
-cigarettes, cigars, gum, and "phony candy" breathmints
-cellphone calls in your car on the drive home
-bluetooth headset (harder than you think)
-fantasy football, basketball, or baseball
-eat your vegetables (even you adults)
-betting on March Madness
-gossiping at work--say something nice instead
-stealing "little stuff" from your employer, including time online
-relations with your spouse (on certain days or weeks)
-thinking about yourself when you wake up or go to sleep (pray instead)
-thinking about yourself when you drive (pray instead)
-buying anything you don't need

LITTLE CHILDREN
That, ahem, should get you started. We are also big advocates of children giving up video games and television. Consider encouraging your little ones to abstain from meat on Friday and even to fast (using your parental judgment, under your supervision of course). Have them give 10% of their piggy bank into the collection basket.

Let's review our conceit: GO FOR IT.

YOU ARE NOT DEAD: LENT VERSUS LINT
May we mildly suggest that you are not dead. You are not a corpse. You are alive. You are breathing. Put your index finger into your bellybutton. Dig. That's lint. This is Lent. And Lent 2009 and it shall never come again, and it shall never *start* again, so that is why it is so important to have some courage on Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Lent is about changing, for forty days, how you live so you can grow closer to Jesus.

LET US PRAY TOGETHER FOR LENT 2009
Our prayer is simple. Let us begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit...

"Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. Please help me do my best, and by leadership or by example, help my family and friends, do their their best, this Lent. Because I love you and I want to love you more. Amen."

LENTEN QUOTATIONS

"Study the generations long past and understand;
has anyone hoped in the Lord and been disappointed?
Has anyone persevered in his commandments and been forsaken?
has anyone called upon him and been rebuffed?
Compassionate and merciful is the Lord;
he forgives sins, he saves in time of trouble
and he is a protector to all who seek him in truth."
Sir 2:5-11 (Reading for Tuesday, February 24, 2009)

"An honest man is the noblest work of God."
Alexander Pope

"I have done my part. May Christ teach you to do yours."
Saint Francis of Assisi, final words on his deathbed

"My Lord has suffered as much for me."
Savonarola, final words on his deathbed

"I have not behaved myself that I should be ashamed to live, nor am I afraid to die, because I have so good a master."
Saint Ambrose, final words on his deathbed

"Jesus! Jesus!"
Saint Joan of Arc, final words on her deathbed

Thank you for being an august citizen of CatholiCity, and for reading to the sweet end. Next time we write, it shall be in the middle of Lent, in the fray, so to speak, of Lent 2009. Meet us there, going for it.

With Immaculate Mary,

Your Friends at CatholiCity

General Topic / Mental Telepathy
February 26, 2009, 07:13:29 AM
How is mental telepathy defined? Telepathy is defined as "communication through means other than the senses," so add the "mental," and you have the concept of minds directly sending and receiving information without the senses. This might be by using something like radio waves, "thought waves," or whatever the various theories claim.

True Story;
When we were children, my mother and father left one day, to visit relatives in another city an hour or two away. They went to play bingo at a church. My brother Andy, meanwhile, was thrown to the ground by a bully, and his collar bone was broken. Around that same moment, my mother stood up in the middle of the game, and announced to my father, "Andy has been hurt!" They immediately left and stared driving home.

Do you believe in mental telepathy?

Eel

Provided you’re not squeamish, the best way to cook eel is from fresh, meaning… uhh… alive. Yes, you can buy live eel at many farmers’ markets or good fish mongers. From there you’ll need to behead it and skin it (both of which, we’re told, is a tricky prospect but one that can be accomplished with a cleaver and a good, sharp paring knife). Once this task has been accomplished, leave the bone attached to the belly and either pan fry or braise it with soy sauce and cook it over a medium grill until flakey. Mark Sissons Daily apple.

Ash Wednesday

Ash cross marked on forehead ©
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent for Western Christian churches. It's a day of penitence to clean the soul before the Lent fast.

Roman Catholic, Anglican, and some other churches hold special services at which worshippers are marked with ashes as a symbol of death, and sorrow for sin.

Symbolism of the ashes
The marking of their forehead with a cross made of ashes reminds each churchgoer that:

Death comes to everyone
They should be sad for their sins
They must change themselves for the better
God made the first human being by breathing life into dust, and without God, human beings are nothing more than dust and ashes
The shape of the mark and the words used are symbolic in other ways:

The cross is a reminder of the mark of the cross made at baptism
The phrase often used when the ashes are administered reminds Christians of the doctrine of original sin
The cross of ashes may symbolise the way Christ's sacrifice on the cross as atonement for sin replaces the Old Testament tradition of making burnt offerings to atone for sin
Where the ashes come from
The ashes used on Ash Wednesday are made by burning the palm crosses that were blessed on the previous Palm Sunday.
Ashes and oil

The oil is blessed ©
The ash is sometimes mixed with anointing oil, which makes sure that the ashes make a good mark.

The use of anointing oil also reminds the churchgoer of God's blessings and of the anointing that took place at their baptism.
