Australian physicist spots dictionary error
Tue May 11, 6:19 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) â€" An Australian physicist has uncovered an error in dictionary definitions that has likely stood uncorrected for a century.

University of Queensland academic Stephen Hughes found that entries for the word 'siphon' incorrectly said atmospheric pressure is the force that allows the device to move liquids from one place to another.

"It is gravity that moves the fluid in a siphon, with the water in the longer downward arm pulling the water up the shorter arm," he said.

"An extensive check of online and offline dictionaries did not reveal a single dictionary that correctly referred to gravity being the operative force in a siphon," he added.

Hughes, whose fields of study include astronomy, meteors, planets and the moon, said he first found the error in the Oxford English Dictionary last year.

He said a spokeswoman for the Oxford English Dictionary had told him he was the first person to question the definition of siphon, which dated from 1911 and had been written by editors who were not scientists.

But she said that his views would be taken into account as they updated the entire reference book which, according to the dictionary's website, is now up to the letter R.

"I thought, 'oh good, just in time', because S is next," Hughes said.

A siphon is a tube -- often u- or v-shaped -- that is used to move liquids from one container to another. It is commonly used to drain fish tanks or petrol tanks.

Wa tingali to kahibawo ang pig-rapist nga bag-o diay tawon nga nanganak ang anay. Tsk, tsk, tsk. He should have raised his own pig para way argabyado. ;D

Here's an old news clipping from www.pet-abuse.com:

Sexually assaulting potbellied pig
West Monroe, LA (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Aug 30, 2004
County: Ouachita

Ouachita Parish Sheriff deputies arrested a West Monroe man for committing a crime against nature Monday night. Deputies arrested Austin Gullette, 45, 4266 Jonesboro Road, West Monroe, for allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with a pig.

Gullette's sister, owner of the pig, said she caught her brother in the act. She said she walked outside because she heard squealing and discovered her brother with one of her three pigs.

When the witness confronted her brother, she said he took off running into the woods.

Deputies left the pig, a 125-pound Vietnamese potbelly, in the care of the owner, who said someone would come out to her residence to see about the animal.

"I'm embarrassed that this is my brother," she said. "I've never in my life seen anyone do this to a harmless little animal."

Maj. Royce Toney, with the OPSO, agreed that the event was a rare incident.

"In the 29 years we've been here, we've never heard of anyone committing a crime against nature with a pig," Toney said.

However, Toney said similar incidents with dogs, donkeys and sheep have been reported.

The owner said her pig, which she fondly refers to as "P-pie," is hiding because she's scared. Although, Gullette didn't admit to the offense, Royce said the eyewitness and physical evidence were enough to make an arrest.

A crime against nature is punishable by a $2,000 fine or five years in prison. Gullette was booked into Ouachita Correctional Center. Bond had not been set.

In my personal view, it is useless and a waste of energy to wonder and ponder about the 'what ifs' in life. Because those what ifs will always remain just that--what ifs. Hypothetical situations that could have been, but never/ failed to manifest. It is torture for oneself to spend excess time on those, and can only be to detrimental effect for the individual.

A perfectly reasonable view indeed. But I can't help thinking that if our forebears refused to wonder about the "what ifs" of life, could we have reached the level of human development and sophistication that we enjoy today? Would we have religion, science, philosophy, art--or freedom? What do artists do best but dream? As Arthur Rimbaud extravagantly wrote: "Our ship towering in the motionless fog turns towards the port of poverty, the enormous city with a sky that’s flecked with fire and mud. Ah! The rotting rags; the bread soaked with rain, the drunkenness, the thousand loves that have crucified me!... Sometimes I see limitless beaches in the sky covered by white nations full of joy. A great golden vessel, above me, waves its multicoloured flags in the morning breeze...."

Dreamers may be ineffectual and unhappy and frustrated all their lives, but the energy that dreamers waste on "what ifs" provide sweetness and light to everyone, including those who, dictated by their astute calculations, wish to purge themselves of any trace of human frailty.

I confess to being lazy, to wasting a lot of time on "what ifs". I confess, too, that my flights of fancy never brought me fame or fortune, that if on a few occasions they ever stood me in good stead those were instances of no shining moment. Yet I insist on dreaming my life away. (In this regard, can it be that perhaps the Neanderthals became extinct because they didn't entertain the "what ifs" of life and instead concerned themselves only with the "here and now"?)

Truly, my faith in reason is quite shaky.  But as George Bernard Shaw waggishly observed, "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

Pinoy in UAE on trial for taking photos of woman in toilet
05/08/2010 | 02:39 PM

After being snitched on by his own mobile phone, a Filipino legal accountant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was haled to a Dubai court for allegedly taking photos of a Filipino woman using the toilet.

The 29-year-old Filipino faced the Court of First Instance for the incident that took place last February 4, UAE news site Khaleej Times had reported.

During the trial, the 28-year-old Filipino woman told prosecutors the incident happened at 8 a.m., while she was preparing to go to work.

She said she entered the bathroom and was careful because her sister warned her the day before about having found a mobile phone hidden in a skirt hanging on the toilet’s door.

At the time, her sister did not pay much attention to that, thinking that some woman may have forgotten her mobile phone in the toilet.

But as the complainant entered the bathroom, she noticed a rug hung on the door of the toilet. She saw a hole in the rug so she suspected that there could be a camera in there.

When she checked the rug, she saw an iPhone attached on its back with pins and covered with some clothes.

She said she found a 31-minute video stored in the phone (which was still taking video clips) and shut it off.

Closer scrutiny of the contents of the phone revealed photos of the defendant.

The woman informed her sister about the incident and they reported it to their workplace administration. They were advised to call the police and hand over the mobile phone to them.

When asked, the accused admitted that he used to hide his phone in the toilet with the video mode on to click pictures of women. â€" LBG, GMANews.TV

Three Indonesian Muslim workers forced to eat pork in Taiwan
05/10/2010 | 04:19 PM

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Three Muslims from Indonesia were "distraught and afraid" after their boss at a suburban Taipei factory forced them to eat pork over a seven-month period or face punishment, a Taiwan rights group said Monday.

Taipei prosecutors on April 26 indicted Chang Wen-lin, the owner of Shin Hua Hang Fashion Co. Ltd., for forcing the three women to consume pork during their September 2008 to April 2009 employment.

In their indictment the prosecutors said Chang believed that the meat "would give the women more stamina for work" and threatened to take money out of their salaries if they didn't eat it.

Islam forbids its adherents from consuming pork because it regards pigs as unclean.

Susan Chen of the Taiwan International Workers Association said her organization cared for the three women for three to four months beginning in April 2009 after they filed a complaint with Taipei county authorities and were removed from the factory by labor rights officials.

"They were distraught and afraid when they came to our shelter, partly because they thought they might be sent home," Chen said. "They still showed a lot of fear when they met their employer again for the first time after their rescue during a meeting to discuss employment disputes."

Chang did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment.
Chen identified the women as Tarsinah, Suswati and Wasilah. She said they are now working at new jobs in Taiwan and do not want to comment on the case because they fear it could endanger their employment.

Chen said Chang originally hired the women as caregivers, but that they were ordered to work from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. in Chang's factory after they arrived in Taiwan. She said they were paid an average salary of New Taiwan dollars 1,370 ($42) per month â€" far less than the NT$17,000 minimum wage.

Taiwan now employs about 350,000 foreign laborers, many from Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Most work as caregivers or as factory and construction laborers.

The US State Department said in its 2009 Human Rights Report that abuse of foreign workers remains a serious problem in Taiwan.

It said the workers are often reluctant to report employer abuse because they fear it could endanger their employment and compromise their efforts to pay back broker employment fees, which can amount to as much as $10,000. - AP

the latest i learned as of tonight is that everyone is on his own, parties be damned.  if it were a street fight, it's now a free-for-all.  this isn't going to be an election we can be proud of.

The rabbit says, 'You feel me first.' The snake starts feeling the rabbit and says, 'Well, you have fur all over, and a little cotton tail, and two long ears, and big back feet...'

The rabbit says, 'I know! I'm a rabbit! Yehey!' Then the rabbit feels the snake.

Forgive me but I disagree. Well, generally women hate talking about age, however, wisdom comes with age due to accumulated experiences, getting old is not just the number of years you live by, but, how you spent those years. It is not how long, but it is measured by prints you left behind that cannot be replaced by time.

Thanks, ladies. (Or should I rather say, girls?) ;D

I am told that one may be silly in youth but should be solemn in age. Yet one could be a humorless adolescent, or a silly old fool. I regret being humorless when I was young; I hope I won't become silly when I'm old. ;D

The only thing that really matters is to stand brave in facing the consequences of our decisions and the willingness to repair the damages if there are any.

Yes, life is just too full of variables that there's no way of knowing where our decisions lead us, or what unintended consequences they engender. The mind can fairly easily surmount personal debacles, but the wounded heart will be marked for life.

Sounds good. But we have to remember that decisions are not discrete: they are connected to everthing else in our life, to who were are, to our sense of self-worth. Moods certainly make a difference, but moods should be subject to one's principles, and not vice versa. You cannot choose to be in a good mood while a murder is being committed and decide to just let the murderer have his way, just because you woke up to a decision to be in a good mood. Unless, of course, you're an utterly despicable human being...

I agree with you, most decisions people made (or just speaking for myself) were all circumstantial. Generally , we based our decisions on the circumstances at that time of the decision making.

And it's because circumstances are shifting and unpredictable that training and principles come into play. Sometimes, conscious deliberate choice is not an option. It can happen that one is not given the luxury of agonizing over a decision.

Foreign Workers Rape Mother Goat To Death
ALL Animals Malaysia  2006-08-05 09:00

GERIK: A pregnant mother goat was raped to death in her pen by two foreign workers. Its owner later claimed RM400 in compensation from the workers.

The incident occurred on a rubber plantation near a village in Gerik.

The goat's owner, Zhang Xunde, 50, said he had gone to check on his goats at 6pm on the day the incident took place. He noticed that the door to the goat pens was open, and he suspected that thieves might have snuck in to steal his goats.

He said that the two foreign workers inside noticed his arrival. One of them fled the area. The other, who was too slow to make his escape, hid himself in a corner of the pen.

After a while, the worker that had been hiding could not stand the stench of the pen and walked out. He was discovered by the owner, and when questioned by Zhang, said that he had been curious to see if there was any difference between Malaysian goats and the goats of his country.

However, when inspecting his goats, Zhang noticed that a pregnant goat was lying on the ground gasping out its last breaths. It died shortly after, and he immediately apprehended the worker for further interrogation.

Then a worker from the neighbouring plantation came up to tell him that the people there had caught a foreign worker that had been spotted running while trying to pull on his pants. They then proceeded to uncover the truth about what had happened.

The death of the pregnant goat was a huge loss for Zhang. After discussing the matter, the foreign workers involved agreed to pay Zhang RM400 as compensation for his loss.

hehehe...mao na diha. and from this doctor-mayor's stand point, logic is nothing; killing is everything.

Killing is everything kay beautification ang objective...

Hmm, duda ko nga Wallace Stevens fan ni siya (albeit in a sick way). In his poem "Sunday Morning", Stevens writes:

"Death is the mother of beauty; hence from her,
Alone, shall come fulfilment to our dreams
And our desires. Although she strews the leaves
Of sure obliteration on our paths,
The path sick sorrow took, the many paths
Where triumph rang its brassy phrase, or love
Whispered a little out of tenderness,
She makes the willow shiver in the sun
For maidens who were wont to sit and gaze
Upon the grass, relinquished to their feet."

Seriously, Ms. Wolf, yes, it's a pity that basic intellectual disciplines such as logic and ethics are lost on some professionals, including those who have taken the Hippocratic Oath. Can it be that, perhaps, some people are driven to politics due to their sense of guilt or inadequacy in relation to their erstwhile professions? That their basic ineptness decrees their bungling their efforts to uphold their "legacy" in the process?

Survey results simply give you statistics, but in choosing a good candidate this does not matter.

Correct. But for their own selfish reasons, some people (or groups) wait for survey results in order to declare their support for the winning candidates. Sad but true. (Just as it is sad but true that if they are proved to have indeed voted for the winners, they will have their just rewards...)

He was a natural motivator..

If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, 'I don't get it!'

'You can't be a positive person all of the time.  How do you do it?'

He replied, 'Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today.  You can choose to be in a good mood or...you can choose to be in a bad mood

I choose to be in a good mood.'

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it.  I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or...I can point out the positive side of life.  I choose the positive side of life.

'Yeah, right, it's not that easy,' I protested.

'Yes, it is,' he said.  'Life is all about choices.  When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice.  You choose how you react to situations.  You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.  The bottom line:  It's your choice how you live your life.'

The positive side of life is not, I'm afraid, a matter of choosing the best mood to be in. The positive side of live is, I believe, living up to your principles, wherever these principles lead you, and in whatever mood they bring you there. Mood is simply the costume you wear to the carnival of life. Other people might mistake the costume for the person, but you ought to know better. And they should, too.
