Bible Study / Hungertuch- Fasting Veil
March 16, 2009, 10:44:12 PM

Tony Nwachukwu  is a Nigerian artist who designed this year´s Hungertuch/ Lenten Veil.
Protection of God´s creation so that all my survive.

Global warming is a reality. We personally experience too much heat and drought, typhoons and long rainy days, the melting of glacier and floods.  We suffer less harvests, hunger and outbreak of diseases.

This is the Lenten Veil for us to discern and reflect our  responsibility to our natural environment and God´s given gifts. The catholic church is alligning herself to the victims of global warming; the old, the poor , the sick, the marginalized and the unborn children of the next generations

This is a project of the Misereor Germany.

St. Clement Mary Hofbauer
(1751-1820)

Clement might be called the second founder of the Redemptorists, as it was he who carried the congregation of St. Alphonsus Liguori to the people north of the Alps.

John, the name given him at Baptism, was born in Moravia into a poor family, the ninth of 12 children. Although he longed to be a priest there was no money for studies, and he was apprenticed to a baker. But God guided the young man's fortunes. He found work in the bakery of a monastery where he was allowed to attend classes in its Latin school. After the abbot there died, John tried the life of a hermit but when Emperor Joseph II abolished hermitages, John again returned to Vienna and to baking. One day after serving Mass at the cathedral of St. Stephen, he called a carriage for two ladies waiting there in the rain. In their conversation they learned that he could not pursue his priestly studies because of a lack of funds. They generously offered to support both him and his friend, Thaddeus, in their seminary studies. The two went to Rome, where they were drawn to St. Alphonsus' vision of religious life and to the Redemptorists. The two young men were ordained together in 1785.

Newly professed at age 34, Clement Mary, as he was now called, and Thaddeus were sent back to Vienna. But the religious difficulties there caused them to leave and continue north to Warsaw, Poland. There they encountered numerous German-speaking Catholics who had been left priestless by the suppression of the Jesuits. At first they had to live in great poverty and preached outdoor sermons. They were given the church of St. Benno, and for the next nine years they preached five sermons a day, two in German and three in Polish, converting many to the faith. They were active in social work among the poor, founding an orphanage and then a school for boys.

Drawing candidates to the congregation, they were able to send missionaries to Poland, Germany and Switzerland. All of these foundations had eventually to be abandoned because of the political and religious tensions of the times. After 20 years of difficult work Clement himself was imprisoned and expelled from the country. Only after another arrest was he able to reach Vienna, where he was to live and work the final 12 years of his life. He quickly became "the apostle of Vienna," hearing the confessions of the rich and poor, visiting the sick, acting as a counselor to the powerful, sharing his holiness with all in the city. His crowning work was the establishment of a Catholic college in his beloved city.

Persecution followed him, and there were those in authority who were able for a while to stop him from preaching. An attempt was made at the highest levels to have him banished. But his holiness and fame protected him and the growth of the Redemptorists. Due to his efforts, the congregation, upon his death in 1820, was firmly established north of the Alps.

He was canonized in 1909.

At least 300,000 people are displaced. BBC

Malnutrition

The result for many families on the ground here has been disastrous. About 300,000 people who fled their homes are still displaced.

Father Eduardo Carina Vasquez of the Santa Teresita Church
I can't ignore the possibility someone wanted to destroy the harmonious relationship between Muslims and Christians
Father Eduardo Carino Vasquez

I met an elementary school principal, Akmad Gutamblang. Classes were under way in his school last August, he said, when the building was shelled.

Some teachers were almost hit. The whole village quickly packed what they could and left.

The camp is supported by international and local organisations who distribute free rice and other basics. But even so, he said, those with larger families do not get enough to eat.

A local official, Eduardo Diestro, confirmed that there are growing concerns about the poor conditions and the impact on health.

The town has a population of almost 50,000 people and is now coping with an influx of more than 11,000 new arrivals.

Eighty-five people in evacuation camps have died since they arrived. Young children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Malnutrition is lowering their ability to fight diseases like measles and tuberculosis.

Psychological impact

In the midst of all the noise and chaos of the evacuation centre, local teachers try to hold lessons in the upstairs school rooms.

Their classes have expanded dramatically with the new arrivals. I met one young female teacher, Ramla. The children find it hard to concentrate, she told me.

St. Louise de Marillac
(d. 1660)

Louise, born near Meux, France, lost her mother when she was still a child, her beloved father when she was but 15. Her desire to become a nun was discouraged by her confessor, and a marriage was arranged. One son was born of this union. But she soon found herself nursing her beloved husband through a long illness that finally led to his death.

Louise was fortunate to have a wise and sympathetic counselor, St. Francis de Sales, and then his friend, the Bishop of Belley, France. Both of these men were available to her only periodically. But from an interior illumination she understood that she was to undertake a great work under the guidance of another person she had not yet met. This was the holy priest M. Vincent, later to be known as St. Vincent de Paul.

At first he was reluctant to be her confessor, busy as he was with his "Confraternities of Charity." Members were aristocratic ladies of charity who were helping him nurse the poor and look after neglected children, a real need of the day. But the ladies were busy with many of their own concerns and duties. His work needed many more helpers, especially ones who were peasants themselves and therefore close to the poor and could win their hearts. He also needed someone who could teach them and organize them.

Only over a long period of time, as Vincent de Paul became more acquainted with Louise, did he come to realize that she was the answer to his prayers. She was intelligent, self-effacing and had physical strength and endurance that belied her continuing feeble health. The missions he sent her on eventually led to four simple young women joining her. Her rented home in Paris became the training center for those accepted for the service of the sick and poor. Growth was rapid and soon there was need of a so-called rule of life, which Louise herself, under the guidance of Vincent, drew up for the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (though he preferred "Daughters" of Charity).

He had always been slow and prudent in his dealings with Louise and the new group. He said that he had never had any idea of starting a new community, that it was God who did everything. "Your convent," he said, "will be the house of the sick; your cell, a hired room; your chapel, the parish church; your cloister, the streets of the city or the wards of the hospital." Their dress was to be that of the peasant women. It was not until years later that Vincent de Paul would finally permit four of the women to take annual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. It was still more years before the company would be formally approved by Rome and placed under the direction of Vincent's own congregation of priests.

Many of the young women were illiterate and it was with reluctance that the new community undertook the care of neglected children. Louise was busy helping wherever needed despite her poor health. She traveled throughout France, establishing her community members in hospitals, orphanages and other institutions. At her death on March 15, 1660, the congregation had more than 40 houses in France. Six months later St. Vincent de Paul followed her in death.

Louise de Marillac was canonized in 1934 and declared patroness of social workers in 1960.

Tim Kretschmer fired 100 shots last Wednesday 11 March 2009.
The German teenage gunman who killed 15 people on Wednesday shot one of his victims at a psychiatric clinic where he was to be treated for depression.

Tim Kretschmer was treated at another clinic in nearby Weissenhoff between April and September before his care was transferred to the centre in Winnenden.

But he never resumed the outpatient therapy sessions, investigators said.BBC

The police officer murdered by dissident republicans in County Armagh will not be forgotten, mourners at his funeral have been told.

Constable Stephen Carroll, 48, was shot while on duty in Craigavon on Monday.

Thousands of people lined the streets outside St Therese Church in his hometown of Banbridge, County Down, where funeral mass was held.

The congregation applauded as he left the altar.

It carried wreaths with the messages 'brother', 'son' and 'uncle'. The coffin was draped in a Police Service of Northern Ireland flag.

In the church Constable Carroll's police cap, gloves and medals were placed on a table next to his coffin along with a Manchester United shirt.

The cortege makes its way to the church
The Catholic Bishop of Dromore, the Most Rev John McAreavey, delivered a direct message to the killers.

"You are greatly mistaken, your way of thinking is backward-looking, the people of Ireland and Britain have chosen a better way forward, the way of reconciliation and accommodation," he told the congregation.

"We are determined not to allow ourselves to be dragged back into the morass of hatred and violence."

"We certainly do not want to lose the peace. We will not lose the peace," he said.

"The word patriotism has been used in many different ways by many different people down the years. Tragically this word is one of the most abused words in the English language.

Canon Liam Stevenson

Ulster Unionist MP Lady Sylvia Hermon, whose late husband Jack was an RUC chief constable, sat next to John O'Dowd from Sinn Féin.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Carroll's widow Kate said: "I feel now that I'm dead inside."

Addressing her husband's killers she asked them to realise that "a piece of land is a piece of land".

"At the end of the day my husband's just going to get six foot by six foot and that's all any of us are going to get," she said.

It was the first murder of a police officer in Northern Ireland since 1998, as well as the first time that a PSNI officer had been murdered by paramilitaries since the force was formed in 2001.

The Continuity IRA said it carried out the murder.

Two days before Constable Carroll's murder, two soldiers were shot dead by the Real IRA at Massereene barracks in Antrim.

Police have been granted an extension until Tuesday to continue questioning two people, a youth aged 17 and a man aged 37, about Constable Carroll's murder. BBC

Six prisoners in Canada used nail clippers and other makeshift instruments to break out of prison.

While fellow inmates blocked the guards' view, they were able to dig through to an outer wall, which they then scaled to escape.

They were later recaptured and said they never expected to get away with it but the work gave them something to do.

A government report has made more than 20 recommendations to improve security at the prison in Saskatchewan.

It had been examining how the prisoners managed to escape from the Regina correctional centre last summer.

The report said investigators could accept inmates deceiving staff on a particular shift but not that "an entire corridor of inmates can deceive at least 87 corrections workers... and engineer an escape of this magnitude".

New prison

The prisoners, four of whom faced murder charges, used modified nail clippers and other tools to remove a heating grill and chip away at the brickwork until they were able to smash through the wall.

It was something to do and we just kept at it

Former escaped prisoner

They were able to toil away at this while their friends blocked the view of the staff by playing cards in the corridor.

The six inmates escaped the compound in the prairies of central Canada by using blankets and sheets to scale the outer walls.

"We didn't think we would get away with it," one escaped prisoner told the investigating team.

"We started working on it. It was something to do and we just kept at it. When we didn't get caught, we picked our night and just went."

The Saskatchewan government has accepted the report's findings and said it will build a new C$87m ($68m; £49m) remand centre. BBC news

St. Leander of Seville

(c. 550-600)

The next time you recite the Nicene Creed at Mass, think of today’s saint. For it was Leander of Seville who, as bishop, introduced the practice in the sixth century. He saw it as a way to help reinforce the faith of his people and as an antidote against the heresy of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. By the end of his life, Leander had helped Christianity flourish in Spain at a time of political and religious upheaval.
Leander’s own family was heavily influenced by Arianism, but he himself grew up to be a fervent Christian. He entered a monastery as a young man and spent three years in prayer and study. At the end of that tranquil period he was made a bishop. For the rest of his life he worked strenuously to fight against heresy. The death of the anti-Christian king in 586 helped Leander’s cause. He and the new king worked hand in hand to restore orthodoxy and a renewed sense of morality. Leander succeeded in persuading many Arian bishops to change their loyalties.

Leander died around 600. In Spain he is honored as a Doctor of the Church.

Blessed Angela Salawa

(1881-1922)

Angela served Christ and Christ’s little ones with all her strength.
Born in Siepraw, near Kraków, Poland, she was the 11th child of Bartlomiej and Ewa Salawa. In 1897, she moved to Kraków where her older sister Therese lived. Angela immediately began to gather together and instruct young women domestic workers. During World War I, she helped prisoners of war without regard for their nationality or religion. The writings of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were a great comfort to her.

Angela gave great service in caring for soldiers wounded in World War I. After 1918 her health did not permit her to exercise her customary apostolate. Addressing herself to Christ, she wrote in her diary, "I want you to be adored as much as you were destroyed." In another place, she wrote, "Lord, I live by your will. I shall die when you desire; save me because you can."

At her 1991 beatification in Kraków, Pope John Paul II said: "It is in this city that she worked, that she suffered and that her holiness came to maturity. While connected to the spirituality of St. Francis, she showed an extraordinary responsiveness to the action of the Holy Spirit" (L'Osservatore Romano, volume 34, number 4, 1991).

You are a very kind and a concerned person PnP.
The toxic fumes goes to the pilot´s cockpit first before it is spread to the passengers. There is a suspicion that this could debilitate the mental capacity of the pilot and co-pilot as well.
Regarding your health complains please have a complete check-up, so you could better assail how to keep yourself fit  and healthy.

Talking about masturbation, I think personally this is the time where boys discover their maleness. Through our concept that it is a sin, it causes an emotional conflict in us which hampers our full development. It is a cause that some becomes sexually perverse.

LGU Philippines / Century of aging
March 10, 2009, 11:58:43 PM
Our world is ageing rapidly. By 2050 more than 1 in 5 of us will be over 60.

For the first time in human history there will be more over 60s than children under 15.

Most of the world's older people live in developing countries. Yet definitions, expectations, and the problems of old age are changing rapidly.

So what is it like to be old in today's world?

Pensions are inadequate or non-existent in many parts of the world, leaving many older people in poverty.

Campaign groups like Help Age International argue that non-contributory social pensions should be feasible even in poor countries. But is such idealism practical?

In this programme, Jane Little hears from elderly slum dwellers in Nairobi, Kenya - who often face the stark choice between eating and paying the rent.

She finds out how much longer they will have to wait until they can hope to draw a pension.

Jane discovers what a country like Brazil, one of the most rapidly ageing in the world, has achieved with a modest social pension - and what's still left to do.

In Britain, she hears from those who think that it's time to scrap the legal retirement age.

And in the US, Jane finds out why some people who have spent a lifetime working - face debt and huge medical bills. BBC

In Mindanao in the southern Philippines, concerns are growing for the health of more than 300,000 internal refugees.

They fled their villages seven months ago when fresh violence erupted between Muslim rebels and government forces.

The shelling, bombings and fire-fights have intensified since the collapse of a peace deal last year.

The BBC's Jill McGivering is in Mindanao and provides a rare insight into a conflict that is little reported.

Do you think I know her? Please pm her name to me, salamat.
The most disturbing thing about this toxic fumes is that some of the effects came after days or weeks. That means the delayed illness is a hindrance if it is really from the fumes inhaled during the flight. The documentation was really interesting last night. There is an institution who is ready to make a urin analysis to prove that it cames from the toxic air.
Anyone who is interested to learn more on this please google because there are interviews and books written by Susan Michaelis, former pilot now a doctor of medicine who concentrate on this issue being a victim herself
