Bible Study / Re: St. Mark, the Evangelist
April 25, 2013, 03:05:24 PM

4. Did Mark and Paul ever reconcile?

They did. In Colossians, one of Paul's prison epistles, he writes:

Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructionsâ€"if he comes to you, receive him) [Col. 4:10].

This shows Mark at a later point as a functioning member of the circle of Paul's companions, indicating an eventual
reconciliation.

The reconciliation was apparently long-lasting, because he mentions mark again in 2 Timothy, written shortly before his death in A.D. 67, where he says:

Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you; for he is very useful in serving me [2 Tim. 4:11].
His is also briefly mentioned in Philemon, where Paul describes him as a fellow-worker:
Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers [Phlm 23-24].

5. What does Peter say about him?

At the end of 1 Peter, the apostle mentions him briefly in the same passage where he indicates he is writing from Rome (i.e., "Babylon"):

She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen [i.e., the church of Rome], sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark [1 Pet. 5:13].

This indicates that Mark had become not only a valuable member of Paul's circle but also someone personally close to Peter--a theme picked up on in the Church Fathers.

Shortly before his resignation, Pope Benedict commented on this passage and how it signifies the convergence of Peter and Paul's circles in Rome:

Then I think it is important that in the conclusion of the Letter Silvanus and Mark are mentioned, two people who were also friends of St Paul.

So it is that through this conclusion the worlds of St Peter and St Paul converge: There is no exclusive Petrine theology as against a Pauline theology, but a theology of the Church, of the faith of the Church, in which there is â€" of course â€" a diversity of temperament, of thought, of style, between the manner of speaking of Paul and that of Peter.
It is right that these differences should also exist today. There are different charisms, different temperaments, yet they are not in conflict but are united in the common faith [Address, Feb. 8, 2013].

6. What do the Church Fathers say about Mark?

A good summary is provided by St. Jerome in is De Viris Illustribus (On Illustrious Men):
Mark the disciple and interpreter of Peter wrote a short gospel at the request of the brethren at Rome embodying what he had heard Peter tell.

When Peter had heard this, he approved it and published it to the churches to be read by his authority as Clemens in the sixth book of his Hypotyposes and Papias, bishop of Hierapolis, record.

Peter also mentions this Mark in his first epistle, figuratively indicating Rome under the name of Babylon She who is in Babylon elect together with you salutes you and so does Mark my son.

So, taking the gospel which he himself composed, he went to Egypt and first preaching Christ at Alexandria he formed a church so admirable in doctrine and continence of living that he constrained all followers of Christ to his example.

Philo most learned of the Jews seeing the first church at Alexandria still Jewish in a degree, wrote a book on their manner of life as something creditable to his nation telling how, as Luke says, the believers had all things in common at Jerusalem, so he recorded that he saw was done at Alexandria, under the learned Mark.

He died in the eighth year of Nero and was buried at Alexandria, Annianus succeeding him [De Viris Illustribus 8].

7. What is the earliest testimony we have linking St. Mark to the second gospel?

We actually have a first century source on this!

According to a first century figure known as John the Presbyter:
Mark, having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately, though not in order, whatsoever he remembered of the things said or done by Christ.

For he neither heard the Lord nor followed him, but afterward, as I said, he followed Peter, who adapted his teaching to the needs of his hearers, but with no intention of giving a connected account of the Lord's discourses, so that Mark committed no error while he thus wrote some things as heremembered them.

For he was careful of one thing, not to omit any of the things which he had heard, and not to state any of them falsely.
Pope Benedict, as well as other scholars, think this John the Presbyter may have had a hand in writing some of the books of the New Testament. If so then we have not just first century testimony regarding the authorship of Mark's Gospel but testimony coming from one of the New Testament authors.

8. Is Mark mentioned in his own gospel?

Possibly. Although he did not apparently follow Jesus throughout his travels, as indicated by John the Presbyter, many have thought that Mark did have at least some contact with Jesus during the time of his Passion and that, as a result, he may be mentioned anonymously in his own gospel.

Specifically, some have proposed that he is the man who carries the water jug in this passage:
And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the passover?"

And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the householder, `The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?' [Mk. 14:12-14]

It has also been proposed that he is the man that Mark curiously records as running away naked when Jesus is arrested:
And they all forsook him, and fled. And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body; and they seized him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked [Mk. 14:50-52].

April 25, 2013, 03:02:40 PM
3. How did Mark cause an argument between Paul and Barnabas?

Mark did not complete his travels with these apostles, though, which eventually caused a significant falling out between Paul and Barnabas:
And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Come, let us return and visit the brethren in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.”

And Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work.

And there arose a sharp contention, so that they separated from each other; Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of the Lord [Acts 13:36-40].

One reason Barnabas may have been more favorably disposed to Mark is that he was his cousin, as we learn from Paul's letters.

2. What does the book of Acts tell us about Mark?

We first meet him in chapter 12, just after the martyrdom of James the son of Zebedee (the first of the apostles to be martyred).

At this time, Peter was captured and his martyrdom scheduled, but he was miraculously freed from prison. When this happened, Luke records:
When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered    together and were praying [Acts 12:12].

Mark then began to play a prominent role in the life of the Church, becoming the travelling companion of the apostles Paul and Barnabas:

And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, bringing with them John whose other name was Mark [Acts 12:25].

1. Who was St. Mark?

St. Mark is commonly identified as:
The figure John Mark from the book of Acts
The figure referred to in St. Paul's epistles simply as "Mark"
The figure in St. Peter's epistles also referred to simply as "Mark"
The author of the second gospel
The first bishop of Alexandria, Egypt

By Arlyn dela Cruz in Manila/Philippine Daily Inquirer | Asia News Network

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Undaunted amidst mounting pressure from both the Philippine and Malaysian governments, Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, the acknowledged leader of the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo insisted that his royal decree that authorised the presence of his younger brother, crown prince Rajah Mudah Agbimuddin Kiram and the combined civilian and armed followers in Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia, stays.

"My decree is not about war. We are not waging war. I sent my brother in Sabah in the name of peace and in exercise of our historic, ancestral and sovereign right over Sabah," Jamalul told the Inquirer in a phone interview facilitated through members of his family who were beside him as he was resting after undergoing his regular dialysis treatment.
Jamalul is in Metro Manila and is guarded by family and close relatives.

Asked as to until when his decree stays, Jamalul said, "For as long as necessary. Sabah is our homeland and the international community acknowledges this. If we have to go to the United Nations we will do so. It is upon us, the leaders of Sulu to claim back what is ours," the sultan added.

Does he have any message for the Philippine government?

"Everything I want to tell the President, I already told him in a letter sent to him, shortly after he assumed the presidency in 2010. I told him in that letter that it is the noble dream of the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo to achieve unity, peaceful survival and economic prosperity and to be able to achieve that, the Sabah issue cannot be ignored," Jamalul said.

Jamalul is 74 years old, the eldest among the Kiram brothers who are direct descendants of the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo. He ran and lost for senator in the 2007 National Elections under the Team Unity of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Abraham Julpa Idjirani, secretary general and spokesperson for the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo said, Jamalul was supposed to meet on Saturday afternoon with some officials of the Aquino administration but was not able to do so because of the dialysis treatment.
Jamalul's wife Fatima Celia told the Inquirer that her husband has been undergoing dialysis treatment for more than a year now.

Open to talks with Palace

Idjirani said, they are open to talks with any official sent by Malacanang as he was already contacted by several officials of the Aquino administration since the standoff in Lahad Datu, Malaysia, was reported in the media. He did not identify the officers who got in touch with him but mentioned the agencies these officials are attached to. "Magpahinga lang si Sultan Jamalul, at pag naka-pahinga na siya, puwede na naming harapin ang sinumang opisyal na gustong makipag-usap sa kanya (After resting, Sultan Jamalul can face any official who wants to talk to him)," Idjirani said.

The Inquirer also learned from another independent source who wished not to be identified that President Benigno Aquino III was informed of the presence of civilian and armed supporters of the Sultanate of Sulu in Lahad Datu, Malaysia, as early as the morning of February 11 through one of his Cabinet members. "But at that time, the report was still sketchy and we had no idea who the group was. But the President was alerted about this on Day 1 of their landing in Sabah," the source said.

The Office of the Presidential Adviser in the Peace Process had no comment on Saturday on the Kirams' claim that they were taking back Sabah.

In Lahad Datu in Sabah, Agbimuddin told the Inquirer that he only follows and receives order from Jamalul and no one else. No one can force us to leave. Even if I, as crown prince of the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo is guarded by armed men belonging to our royal security forces, we will never provoke any encounter," Agbimuddin said.
Assorted arms

Members of the royal security force are armed with assorted long firearms, Agbimuddin said. "M-14, M-16, M203, Baby Armalite, basta assorted ang dala namin (we have all kinds)," he explained when asked what type of firearms they were carrying.

The active recruitment for members of the royal security force of the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo, according to Agbimuddin, began in 1999 but training only began in 2001 in Simunol, Tawi-Tawi, Isabela, Basilan and even in mainland Zamboanga. "Sa Grand Stand pa nga kami ng Zamboanga nag-physical fitness exercise at alam ng Southcom 'yan (We do our physical fitness exercises at the Zamboanga grand stand, and the Southcom knew it)," Agbimuddin added.

The Southcom he is referring to is the Southern Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines based in Zamboanga City and the Grand Stand is the one near Cawa-Cawa Boulevard.

Relatives on board

Who takes care of their logistics? Like food and other basic necessities since their landing in Lahad Datu?

Agbimuddin said, most of the residents of Tanduao, Lahad Datu, are Tausugs and relatives of the ones who went with him on board a motorboat from Tawi-Tawi. "Hindi kami magugutom dito at ang mga babae na kasama namin, sila ang nagluluto para sa amin (The women who are with us are doing the cooking)."

Will other groups with the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo follow him in Lahad Datu?

More coming

Agbimuddin answered that was his understanding, but he said he didn't know when. There might even be more, he said.

Another source from Sulu told the Inquirer that a group identified with a local political clan with a stronghold in one municipality there is reportedly getting ready to follow Agbimuddin in Sabah. The source identified the political leader as a relative of the Kirams and also a former mayor and a former member of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) known then as the "Tiger of the MNLF".

"The mayor is getting ready and waiting for the order from Sultan Kiram III to proceed [to Sabah]," the source said in Filipino, adding that the influential leader in Sulu, now in his early 60s, command a force of more than 200 men.

Help & Support / BIR Goes After Ryan Bang
February 02, 2013, 10:57:24 PM
MANILA, Philippines --- A South Korean actor and host of an ABS-CBN noontime "Showtime" show was charged yesterday with tax evasion by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for alleged non-payment of income tax worth P1.8 million.
In a criminal complaint filed before the Department of Justice (DOJ), BIR Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto Henares identified the respondent as Hyun Sung Bang, whose screen name is Ryan Bang of Bel-Air Village, Makati City.

The BIR chief said the charges against the comedian ranged from "willful failure to register with the BIR to willful failure to file his income tax returns for the years 2010 and 2011."

The young entertainer was also accused of failure to file percentage tax and value-added tax (VAT) returns.

The BIR issued a letter of authority to examine his financial statements and determine his true income.

Based on documents, the South Korean received more than P993,000 from ABS-CBN, P58,000 from KP and PR and EMS, P2,300 from Summit Publishing Company, and P80,000 from Studio 23 in 2010.

In 2011, he also received more than P2 million from ABS-CBN Corporation, P33,333 from ABS-CBN Film Production, and P185,000 from Studio 23.

Despite his substantial income for the two-year period, Henares said Bang did not submit his income, VAT and percentage tax returns.

The case against the foreign comedian was the 145th filed by Henares before the DOJ as the BIR intensifies the campaign against various tax evasion schemes.

The Turk who shot pope John Paul II in St Peter's Square in 1981 claimed in a new book on Friday that the founder of the Iranian revolution, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, told him to do it.

The Vatican immediately denied several assertions in the book including the claim by Mehmet Ali Agca that he had spoken of the Iranian link at his meeting with John Paul II in his prison cell.

Ali Agca, a former far-right extremist and Islamic fundamentalist, said he was "indoctrinated" in Tehran after escaping from a Turkish prison where he was serving time for killing a journalist.

At a nighttime meeting with Khomeini, Ali Agca said the Supreme Guide of the Iranian revolution told him to kill the Polish pope -- who was badly wounded but survived the assassination attempt.

"You have to kill the pope in the name of Allah. You have to kill the devil's mouthpiece on earth," Ali Agca said the Ayatollah Khomeini told him.

The book has been published in Italian and is entitled "I Was Promised Paradise: My Life and the Truth Behind the Attack Against the Pope."

Following his arrest, Ali Agca initially said the assassination attempt had been organised by the Soviet KGB and a group of Bulgarian diplomats.

He has since been diagnosed with mental problems.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi dismissed Ali Agca's assertions as "new lies".
Lombardi said he had spoken to John Paul II's secretary Stanislaw Dziwisz, who was present in the cell when Ali Agca met the pope.

"He absolutely denies that the two men spoke about people who ordered the attack or the Ayatollah Khomeini and also that the pope invited the attacker to convert to Christianity," Lombardi said.

Ali Agca had a different description of the famous 1983 meeting with the pope he had tried to kill.

"Who ordered you to kill me?" Ali Agca said the pope asked him, promising not to reveal the secret.

After Ali Agca told him, he said that the pope said to him: "As I forgive you, I forgive them too."

The reformed extremist said he had "lived for years in the error of Islamic Nazi-fascism" ever since he was a child and now recognised that "Jesus Christ was the best person who walked the earth".

The 55-year-old served 19 years in prison in Italy for the shooting and was then deported to Turkey where he served another 10 years.

He was released in January 2010.

Tigbao, should a sari-sari store be taxed?

What is needed in our income tax system is the ENFORCEMENT and COLLECTION.

Hahahaha.

Mao ra ba ni dagan karon sa atong BIR. They are now going after institutions which were assumed before as INCOME TAX EXEMPT entities. Condominium corporations and non-stock non-profit hospitals were checked and assessed.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - It's not yet known as to what the exact nature of the target of the air strike was. Syrian state media says that the strikes targeted a military research center near Damascus. Regional security sources told international news agencies that the target was a convoy of trucks, allegedly carrying anti-aircraft missiles for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"Israeli fighter jets violated our airspace at dawn today and carried out a direct strike on a scientific research centre in charge of raising our level of resistance and self-defense," the army's general command said in a statement carried by state news agency SANA.

The strike came "after terrorist groups made several failed attempts in the past months to take control of the site," the statement added. "Terrorist groups" are the term President Bashar al-Assad's government uses for rebel fighters.

Jets entered the Syrian airspace via Mount Hermon, or Jabal el-Sheikh in Arabic, the army said. "They... carried out an act of aggression, bombarding the site, causing large-scale material damage and destroying the building," state television quoted the military as saying.

Two site workers were killed in the strike and five others wounded.

The Syrian army and Hezbollah have both denied earlier reports that the overnight air strike had targeted a weapons convoy from Syria to the armed group in Lebanon. News agencies quoted U.S. and regional officials as saying that Israel had conducted an air strike inside Syria near the border with Lebanon, hitting a convoy of trucks.

"The target was a truck loaded with weapons, heading from Syria to Lebanon," one Western diplomat said.

A source among rebels fighting Assad said an air strike around dawn blasted a convoy on a mountain track about five kilometers south of where the main Damascus-Beirut highway crosses the border.

Israel had allegedly been planning for days leading up to the air strike to hit a shipment of weapons bound for Hezbollah, saying the shipment included sophisticated Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles, which would be strategically "game-changing" in the hands of Hezbollah.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the strike.

Hezbollah has denied the report, terming the Israeli strikes a "raid of aggression" and criticizing the international community for not speaking out against it.

A temperature below zero was recorded at the summit of Mount Pulag in Benguet province over the weekend, a government official confirmed.

Emerita Alba, who heads a park that has jurisdiction over the third highest mountain in the Philippines, said temperature in Mount Pulag dropped to negative 2 degrees Celsius.

“We experienced a negative 2 temperature last Saturday,” Alba told Yahoo! Southeast Asia Thursday.

But Alba clarified her office, Mt. Pulag Visitors Center, which hands out clearance to hikers before they can explore Mt. Pulag, does not have instruments to measure conditions in the area with precision.

The parks superintendent said the information only came from the interviews she conducts with mountain climbers, who have actually reached the summit of Mt. Pulag.

“We used to have a device but we lost it. And it is located four to five kilometers away from the mountain, the elevation is far from the summit,” Alba explained.

“We just got the information as we interview the hikers. They have devices that can measure temperatures on the peak,” she added.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) cannot confirm whether such temperature actually occurred in Mt. Pulag.

PAGASA weather forecaster Alvin Pura said they do not have an automatic weather station (AWS) near Mt. Pulag that can prove the extremely cold temperature reported in the area.

“It is possible to have a temperature below 5 degrees Celsius in Mt. Pulag considering the altitude of its summit. But we are not sure if it can drop all the way to zero degrees,” Pura explained.

In a separate interview, Pura said PAGASA was only able to record a 9.5 degrees Celsius temperature in their unmanned station in Banaue, which is the nearest to Mt. Pulag in Benguet, on Thursday morning.

Citing records, Pura added that PAGASA also recorded a 10 degrees Celsius on the same day in Baguio City, which experienced the lowest temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius on January 18 this season.

The state weather bureau also recorded an 18.5 degrees Celsius in Tagaytay, which had the lowest drop in temperature to 17.6 degrees on January 15.

“We are experiencing extreme cold weather because the snows are beginning to melt in Siberia and China and they are being blown towards our direction by the northeast monsoon,” Pura explained.

But Oghie Dulay, who has been climbing for 17 years, said such low temperatures still do not lessen the dangers it can pose to hikers who usually climb Mt. Pulag.

“Even if it does not reach zero degrees, it’s dangerous for us to climb in weathers like this because usually there is zero visibility,” Dulay explained.

“It also makes the path damp and very slippery. It’s really freezing when we have to camp out over night,” he added.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Benguet has already issued a warning to mountain climbers about the dangers of going to Mt. Pulag.

Fortunately, DENR Protective Area and Wildlife Sector regional technical director Reynald Yawan said there have been no reports of accidents related to the extreme weather conditions in Benguet province.

“We do not recommend them going to Mount Pulag. But usually, the hikers go there for the cold experience,” Yawan explained.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Wednesday that a request by the Philippines for a U.N. tribunal to intervene in its longstanding South China Sea territorial dispute with China would only complicate the issue, and denounced Manila's "illegal occupation" of islands there.

Manila has asked the tribunal of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to order a halt to China's activities that the Philippines says violates the Southeast Asian nation's sovereignty.
China's claims over islands, reefs and atolls in resource-rich waters off its south coast and to the east of mainland Southeast Asia set it directly against Vietnam and the Philippines, while Brunei, Taiwan and Malaysia also lay claim to parts.

Asked about the Philippines' move, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said its southern neighbour was occupying some of China's islands in the South China Sea.

"China has consistently opposed the Philippines' illegal occupation," he told a daily news briefing.
China supports talks, but only on a bilateral basis with the countries directly involved, as previously agreed on by China and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Hong added.

"We hope that the relevant country honours its promises, and ... does not take any action to complicate or expand the problem," he said, without elaborating.

It was not clear how the tribunal could help. While all its decisions are binding on countries concerned, it has no power to enforce them. (Reporting by Ben Blanchard; Editing by Ron Popeski)

Children here are being taught it is okay to be wrong. And those who are ardent supporters of truth are punished.

History / Re: Quimbaya "Airplanes"
January 16, 2013, 05:36:54 PM
The Quimbaya artifacts are several dozen golden objects, found in Colombia, made by the Quimbaya civilization culture, dated around 1000 CE, a few of which (the so-called Quimbaya airplanes) are supposed by ancient astronauts theorists to represent modern airplanes, and therefore to be out-of-place artifacts. The whole of the figurines, measuring 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) each, are described in mainstream archaeology as depicting birds, lizards, amphibians and insects common in that region and period, some of them highly stylized, as in the Gold Museum, Bogotá.

In 1994, Germans Peter Belting and Conrad Lubbers created simplified radio-controlled scale models of these objects and showed that their models, which lack some convoluted features present in the real figurines, could fly.

History / Re: Saqqara Bird
January 16, 2013, 05:15:04 PM
Some have suggested that the Saqqara Bird may represent evidence that knowledge of the principles of aviation existed many centuries before such are generally believed to have first been discovered. Egyptian physician, archaeologist, parapsychologist and dowser Khalil Messiha has speculated that the ancient Egyptians developed the first aircraft. He wrote that it "represents a diminutive of an original monoplane still present in Saqqara." He also claimed that the Saqqara Bird could function as a glider if it had a horizontal tailplane, which he "suppose[d] was lost," and noted that the Egyptians often placed miniaturized representations of their technology in their tombs.

Messiha contended that the Saqqara Bird differs significantly from other statues and models of birds housed in the Cairo museum. According to Messiha, the Saqqara Bird has a vertical tailplane which is unlike the generally horizontal shape of a real bird's tail. Richard P. Hallion described this fin as "shaped as if the bird had twisted its tail feathers." It is also legless and has wings set at an angle Messiha sees as similar to that of modern aircraft, which he considered an attempt to create aerodynamic lift.

In spite of these claims, however, no ancient Egyptian aircraft have ever been found, nor has any other evidence suggesting their existence come to light. As a result, the theory that the Saqqara Bird is a model of a flying machine is not accepted by mainstream Egyptologists. Hallion notes that it is "far too heavy and unstable itself to fly."
