NCR reigns anew in Palaro; CV cagers win
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) | Updated April 28, 2013 - 12:00am

A jampacked crowd watches the final game between Central Visayas  and NCR at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center in Dumaguete City. Central Visayas defeated NCR, 70-66, to bag the gold in boys basketball secondary division. JUN MENDOZA

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines – National Capital Region retained its superpower status for the 10th straight time, capping its supremacy with commanding wins in women’s basketball and volleyball at the close of Palarong Pambansa yesterday at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Sports Complex.

Represented by Hope Christian School, the NCR lady spikers overpowered a listless Central Visayas in a surprisingly one-sided 25-12, 25-7, 25-1 victory to cop the volleyball gold before their lady dribblers routed Calabarzon, 65-52, to snare the basketball mint in both the girls’ side.

The pair of triumphs gave a crowning touch to a fine achievement by the Big City bets who annexed their 10th general championship starting in 2003. The annual multi-sports meet was cancelled outright in 2004 due to the national elections back then.

NCR’s volleyball and basketball victories more than made up for painful defeats in other ballgames, the most embarrassing of which came in the sport that mattered most – boys basketball.

Playing before a predominantly Visayan crowd at the jampacked Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Centre, NCR, represented by San Sebastian, struggled early, mounted a spirited comeback before falling short in the end and losing to a hardened, more determined Central Visayas, 70-66.

Dawn Ochea provided the muscle and the hustle that served as the adhesive that kept Central Visayas together  when they nearly blew a lead as big as 19 points.

Central Visayas was represented mostly by players from regional titlist Sacred Heart of Ateneo in Cebu.

Ochea scored the games’ first eight points and three of his team’s last four including a free throw and a putback that gave the Cebuanos enough cushion to weather NCR’s furious fightback.

It was Central Visayas first secondary basketball gold since former Cebuano hotshot and PBA star Elmer Cabahug lorded it over the field in the 80s.

And more importantly, Central Visayas avenged its quarterfinal loss to NCR, then represented by Letran, in last year’s edition eventually topped by the latter in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

“We lost to them in a close game in the quarterfinals and I didn’t forget that because I was part of that team,” said the 16-year-old Ochea, a Tacloban native who will play this coming UAAP season for the Adamson Falcons.

NCR likewise fell in softball where it was pummeled by three-peat winner Western Visayas, 8-0, and in baseball where it absorbed a 1-2 defeat.

Its secondary boys volleyball team also came short and dropped a heart-stopping 25-21, 25-12, 19-25, 13-25, 15-11 defeat at the hands of Calabarzon.

Its defending champion football team was eliminated as early as Friday following a 1-2 semifinal loss to Central Visayas.

Mimaropa went on to win the event, which has fast gaining popularity thanks to the emergence of the Phl AzkalS, after beating Central Visayas via penalty shootout, 5-4, following a 1-1 standoff in regulation play.

Calabarzon’s Shania Mae Mendoza and Marie Antoinette San Diego took the chess team gold for secondary girls while Davao’s Austin Literatus and John Rey Butacan reigned supreme in secondary boys team event.

At the end of the day, NCR bested all challengers by amassing 596.5 points, way way ahead of closest pursuer Western Visayas (446.34) and Central Visayas (337).

Bitaw, performance in athletics (and most everything else, for that matter) is a function of resources. Sa paugnat sa kusog sa ubos hinuon, patas ang labanan...
