puyo mo dre? hehe

The thousand islands are a chain of islands that straddle the US CANADA border in the Saint Lawrence River as it emerges from the northeast corner of the Lake Ontario. The islands stretch for about 50 mi downstream from Kingston, Ontario Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario. The u.S. islands are in the state of New York. The islands which number 1,865 in all, range in size from 40 sq mi to smaller islands occupied by a single residence to even smaller uninhabited outcroppings of rocks that are home to the migratory waterfowl.

The number of islands was determined using the criteria that any island must be above water level for 365 days/year, bigger than one sq ft and support at least one tree of shrub.

General Topic / White corn shortage <-- na sab?!?!
April 04, 2008, 06:56:16 AM
By Cris Evert Lato
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 11:15:00 04/03/2008

The owner of a small eatery in barangay Mabolo has stopped selling cooked corn grits after prices of corn went up from P16 per kilo in December 2007 to P23 in February.

“Kung magluto ko, gamayan na lang pud nako ang takos. (If I cook corn grits, I make the portions smaller),” said Josephine Alfeche, 46.
The steep price of of corn grits, now P30 per kilo, is due to a shortage of corn in Central Visayas, according to millers and retailers in Cebu.

They urged the government to address the shortage being felt in the region and the entire country.

“We are referring to white corn here, which is for human consumption. The government offers subsidy for farmers to plant yellow corn, which is commonly used for biofuel,” said Nestor Tio, president of the Cebu Grain Millers Association.

Tio said prices would not have gone up if there was an abundant supply of white corn.

“White corn is the substitute for rice but this is not the case (at present). All over the Philippines, white corn is scarce. We started feeling this (since) December 2007,” Tio said.

Tio urged government to support farmers in planting white corn.
“Hangyo lang ko sa gobyerno nga i-subsidize pud ang white corn para motanom ang mga farmers. (I ask the government to please subsidize the cost of white corn so that farmers will also plant them). Let us give importance to white corn because this is a substitute for rice,” he said.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the Department of Agriculture to look into the reported shortage of corn and determine if it is due to the hoarders or wrong distribution of the staple.

About 30 retailers in Carbon market have stopped selling corn grits since last week due to high prices, according to Erwin Gok-ong, Cebu City north chapter vice president of the Grain Retailers Confederation of the Philippines (Grecon).

Manuel Yu, president of the Cebu Traders Association, which supplies grains to retailers, confirmed the shortage of white corn but said there is an abundance of yellow corn in their warehouses.

However, most people do not buy yellow corn for their families because it is associated as an ingredient for livestock feeds, he said.

“But I encourage you to buy yellow corn. The taste and texture is all right, comparable to white corn,” he said.

The effect of the corn shortage is deeply felt in Cebu because local corn farmers only produce 49 percent of what the province can consume, said Ricardo Oblena, Department of Agriculture Central Visayas director.

The province gets its main supply of corn grits from Mindanao particularly the provinces of Bukidnon, Cotabato and Davao, Oblena said.
Data from the DA showed that Cebu consumed 197, 472 metric tons of corn last year but only produced 106,152 metric tons of corn in 2007. Only 96,889 metric tons of these were for human consumption.

About 2,539 metric tons were used as seed while 6,724 metric tons were used for livestock feeds.

Among the four provinces in Central Visayas, Bohol is considered 111.43 percent sufficient because it produces more than what the population can consume.

Siquijor is 66.38 percent sufficient and Negros Oriental, 61.32 percent sufficient.

The cost today of corn grits makes it comparable to some commercial rice varieties.

However, some Cebuanos still prefer eating cooked corn grits because they say it gives a sense of fullness in the stomach that satisfies hunger pangs better than rice.

Some consumers also noticed that rice varieties that cost P34 per kilo get spoiled easily.

“Many times, I’ve bought ganador rice hoping that we would eat good quality rice only to find out that it has a different smell and spoils easily,” said Floramae Kyamko of barangay Tinago in Cebu City.

Jesselyn Tagbar, a beautician and mother of two, said she could not understand why prices of basic commodities continue to rise.

She said her salary of P88 per day is not even enough to get by.

“Pasabta kuno ko unsaon nako pagpakaon akong mga anak anang akong sweldo unya sigeg saka ang presyo sa bugas. Wala nay mapili sa mais ug humay (How will I feed my children with my meager salary while prices of rice continue to increase? I can no longer choose between corn and rice),” Tagbar, 31, said.

Agriculture officials earlier said prices of rice went up due to increases in world market prices of rice,, fuel, palay and fertilizers. Even the conversion of agriculture land to industrial use was considered a factor.

Cebu has a daily rice requirement of 14,477 metric tons of rice but only five towns and two cities in the province produce rice.

These are the cities of Carcar (320 hectares) and Toledo (243) and the towns of Pinamungajan (284), Argao (274 hectares), Asturias (205), Balamban (153) and Sibonga (116).

To address problems in the distribution of rice, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he would ask the help of the National Food Authority (NFA) to put up one Tindahan ni Gloria in each mountain barangay in the city.

He said the government outlet would assure hillyland residents they had access to affordable rice.

For urban poor areas, the mayor talked of applying the system of Curitiba in Brazil where residents would exchange their collected garbage for a pack of rice.

He said this would help speed up garbage collection but the mayor gave no details of when and how this would be done.

Meanwhile, a farmer’s group said there was no need for the government to import rice if local farmers were given enough support.

Bohol province was cited as an example of an area that produces more than it could consume.

Estrella Catarata, executive director of the Farmers Development Center (Fardec) said government spent P10 billion in importing one billion of tons of rice when only P3 billion to P4 billion was needed to support local rice farmers to produce the same volume.

Bohol has a population of 1.1 million population and annual rice consumption of 111.8 million kilos.

But Catarata said Bohol farmers produced 112,822,670 kilos of rice annually from the province's 36,544 hectares of rice plantation.

She said the main cause of shortage in rice production was the conversion of rice plantations to palm oil plantations in Ubay and Tinidad towns in Bohol.

“We don't need to import. We have rice capacity pero ang mga mag-uuma gigutom (We have rice capacity but the farmers are hungry).

Record-high rice harvest seen in 2009

P5-B subsidy deemed crucial to food security
By Amy R. Remo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 02:13:00 04/04/2008

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"The Department of Agriculture expects a record-high rough rice yield of 8.5 million metric tons in the dry season harvest of 2009 with the help of a P5-billion subsidy recently granted by the national government, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said.

That will be a big leap from the 7.0-7.2 million metric tons estimated for this year's dry season, Yap said in an interview.

The dry season runs from November to April.

Yap said plans had yet to be finalized but part of the P5-billion government subsidy would be used to rehabilitate irrigated lands.

For this year, the Department of Agriculture has allotted at least P8 billion for construction, repair and rehabilitation of irrigation facilities serving 60,000 hectares of arable land. Over the next three years, it expects to irrigation facilities to cover a total of 300,000 hectares of land.

Increased spending on irrigation in key rice producing areas is crucial to the government's plan to attain rice self-sufficiency by 2010.

So far, the country has 1.413 million hectares of irrigated lands.

Yap added that the department would also use part of the subsidy to boost distribution of seeds or to intensify seed support and other necessary planting materials.

"There is a need to pump in funds now and prepare for the 2009 dry planting season," he said. "For instance, we need to ensure that there will be enough hybrid and certified seeds by April or May in preparation for the November planting."

He added, however, that agricultural officials were still discussing the amount to be allocated for each program.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo this week announced that she would issue an executive order authorizing the grant of P5 billionâ€"five percent of last year's budget surplus of P100 billionâ€"to subsidize farmers and ensure steady supply of rice.

For the year, the agriculture department expects rough rice production to reach 17.3 million metric tons, from last year's production of 16.24 million

update:  Arroyo conducts surprise inspection of rice warehouse

Irked by failure to account for stocks
By Lira Dalangin-Fernandez
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 17:39:00 04/03/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Thursday emerged visibly irked from a rice warehouse whose personnel failed to account for the stocks stored there.

Arroyo led a surprise inspection of the warehouse of the Isabela Greenfield Corp. at the corner of Figueroa and Perdigon Streets in Paco, Manila with Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, National Bureau of Investigation head Nestor Mantaring, and National Food Authority (NFA) officials as part of stepped-up efforts to curb hoarding and ensure the rice supply in the country is stable.

During the inspection, Arroyo also instructed state universities and colleges to make their gyms available for use as rice warehouses, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to free up some military trucks for delivery of the staple cereal to far-flung provinces.

Arroyo was piqued when she found out that the warehouse has no record book to account for the 7,733 sacks of rice there. The delivery receipt showed to her reflected the delivery only of 1,300 sacks, according to lawyer Halil Lucman of the NFA’s bureau regulatory division.

"The requirement is it [record book] has to be in the warehouse, that's a violation [if they have] no record book," Arroyo said. "Ang naka-record rito na transaction [The transactions recorded here] is much less than what is really here…It is hoarded rice because it is not recorded."

However, she clarified that what happened was not a raid, but a mere inspection to check if warehouses have been declaring their stockpiles of rice and observe how the NFA personnel are conducting inspections.

2. Don't write until most recent weird poster didn't ask you to..
3. You may comment on every post given.
4. Notify the person by sending him/her a pm that he/she is next;)

I'll start..

CRUSTRACEANS (any food with crustaceans) - were once my favorite. there was a time we had crabs, shrimps, almost everyday on my request.. now.. i dont know but the smell. the taste. the sight. it makes me gag.. cant even  use the same vinegar that has been dipped with their kinds. i sometimes try to eat or bite a bit but my stomach would rumble and a part of my tongue excretes this weird liquid.

Herpetophobia  - I fear Lizards. I cant be in a bedroom, bathroom, vehicle if a lizard is around. I swear ill die of a heart attack if I wake up seeing a lizard beside me. (my heart's already beating fast right now)

VICK's VAPORUB LOVER - When my eyes, become itchy, I put vick's on it. I don't like to rub my eyes kase.

EVIL TONGUE - if i audibly wish for something bad to happen to a person it comes true. or if i compliment on your smooth skin, the opposite starts to happen in a few days. that's why im always careful on what i say out loud..

BLINDING ANGER - i cant think sanely when im mad, i act, talk, argue on impulse = revenge. when i was in college, i grabbed a mans collar and shouted at him "nganu imo man ko gi labay sa mineral?" i swear he was way taller and bigger.

STONE PICKER - if im in a memorable event, i pick the nicest stone i see and keep it as a remembrance.

Trekkers' cameras catch flying objects
By Garry A. Cabotaje
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THE presence of two strange flying creatures caught on camera inside a huge cave in the southern town of Argao, Cebu has baffled local tourism officials.

They believed that the footage captured by a group of call center agents were of fishlike or snakelike objects about a meter long that have been spotted in mountain areas of Mexico, Japan and Europe.

These creatures are called skyfish or flying rods because of their stick-like body. They have appendages along their torsos that reportedly flap in a wave motion while moving.

dili mac.. crustaceans used to be my favorite. but when i was in grade 6, one day, i ate a crab, then my stomach rumbled, and my tongue or under my tongue started to excrete a weird bland iquid.. ewan! murag water ra cya but it won't stop  until i drink coke, eat choc, or any food that will remove the crustacean taste from my mouth. maski gani vinegar mac nga g tuslo-an lang ug crab or pasjan.. mu excrete napud na ako mouth.

i miss those days tho..

The fastest way to get to Biliran is to book a flight to tacloban. Then take a bus from Tacloban to Naval route  (capital of Biliran). May opt for vans which are faster (2hours trip) fare: 120-130php. Getting around: the habal-habal (motorcycle) is the most common mode of transportation as most of the roads outside the main highway are rough.

There are a lot of cults here in the Phil Lorz..sus! but I'm not too familiar with it, more on urban legends man gud ang stories sa ila heinous modos operandi. if like too weird ang act, they associate it with cults.. but i'll make search about this
#7591
annoying part lorz is that they are "krungkrung" it's a linggo for like tanga-tanga..  take for example, they keep on talking with their group while crossing the streets,  (i was a victim of this hapit ko kabangga!) , they cross the street without looking while reading street signs, that's is why there are alot of cases wherein taxi drivers run over their feet.. (funny no?) especially in sm.. ewan. ila feet manglapas jud sa line! some are too loud, in discos some are too funny when drunk especially when they dance,..it's like a robot dancing.. all of them!! i never saw a graceful korean yet..

one time, my friend got hit by a drunk korean he was really fast. good thing he hit on the parked car instead. instead of my friend.. tas backing cya, continued driving, then hit 2 more cars ahead.. the show was like a carnival bump cars!! lol.. good thing my friend was spared, the car that got hit near her can't be fixed na.. it was too wrecked.

I personally don't understand what is the big deal with non-Christians and atheists towards Christian believers, ,- jealousy. crab mentality..
#7593
Some leave Phil after their sem, or they go abroad after that. Some stays here with expired passports. they really enjoy the culture and the beaches here..
#7594
Like the Mara gang, there is no way out dba? except when you are in hiding. cause they go after you..
#7595
hmm..only like, "hi miga" haha! or " maayong bi-i miga" lol!
some can't converse well in english gane.. cause a friend of mine was a teacher and she invited some of her students ;)
#7596
Worst part, they poison the mind of young teens especially those who are attention seeking teenagers;  depreived by parents attention, so ang bata intawn, thinking this is his/her long lost family, ma apil sa gubot..and those are the young ones who kill or rob kay as what you said Lorz it's like their passes to be a full pledged member.. hmph! atot uy
#7597
ah! kana sa new report, korean student, cause i think he is enrolled in an english school somewhere here..
#7598
no, Cebu is a popular destination for Koreans to learn english.. there are english schools here para ila.. and some private tutors.. like mga call center agents, pwede mag side line..

they say ang dia daw nga koreans are not the rich ones.. cause rich koreans goes to US to learn english ;) but they look rich here!! haha ;)

i swear Lorenzo they are LITERALLY everywhere. if "no clue nga foreigner" if how we look like, ull say koreans are cebuanos narin..

His search for answers soon leads him to more shocking violenceâ€"and an autistic girl with an extraordinary genius.
