TOKYO (AP) â€" Tama the stationmaster, Japan's feline star of a struggling local railway, has been mourned by company officials and fans and elevated into a goddess at a funeral.

The calico cat was appointed stationmaster at the Kishi station in western Japan in 2007. In her custom-made stationmaster's cap and a jacket, Tama quietly sat at the ticket gate welcoming and seeing off passengers. She quickly attracted tourists and became world-famous, contributing to the railway company and local economy.

Tama died of a heart failure on June 22. During Sunday's Shinto-style funeral at the station where it served, the cat was made a goddess.

Wakayama Electric Railway President Mitsunobu Kojima thanked the cat for its achievement, and said Tama will be enshrined at a nearby cat shrine next month.

DEAR OLDEST: I don't know how your siblings feel about this impending birth, but try to remember that showers are intended to celebrate the new life that's coming into the world. This isn't about whether you approve of your father's behavior or his choice of women. If he is as irresponsible as you say, that poor little boy will need all the help and emotional support he can get in the future.

If you opt not to attend, it may drive a wedge between you and your father, so I'm voting with your husband. Go with your siblings, be pleasant and leave your funky attitude at home, because if you don't, the person you will be isolating is yourself.

DEAR ABBY: My father is expecting his seventh child with his current "fiancee." I am the oldest of six girls; this child is expected to be a son. His fiancee is 11 years my junior -- 33 years younger than my father.

I recently started a family and have two children under the age of 2. For various reasons, I am fed up with playing nice regarding my father's relationships and irresponsible behavior.

They are having a baby shower for the expectant parents, and I don't want to attend. My husband thinks I am wrong because I can't muster up the spirit that a baby shower is supposed to evoke. I think I'm being smart for not bringing my funky attitude. Should I attend? -- OLDEST CHILD

By the end of the two-year study, there was much less of a difference between the two groups, suggesting weight loss slowed in those on the Stone Age diet.

Although the research focused on postmenopausal women, it's expected that younger women and men of all ages would benefit in the same way.

In a report on their findings, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers said: "A paleolithic diet has greater beneficial effects than a Nordic diet regarding fat mass, abdominal obesity and triglyceride levels in obese postmenopausal women."

Catherine Collins, chief dietitian at St George's Hospital in London said the Stone Age diet appeared to accelerate weight loss in the first six months.

But she stressed women appeared to lose less fat as the study progressed.

"This may be because the paleolithic diet is very low in protein, lacking in meat, eggs, cheese and milk. One of the effects of that is to slow the body's metabolic rate (the rate at which it burns calories).

"As the metabolic rate declines, at some point that will stop you losing weight."

In the latest study, scientists from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at Cambridge University teamed up with colleagues at Umea University in Sweden to track obese women over a two-year period.

They recruited 70 heavily overweight women and split them into two groups.

One was assigned to a diet based around paleolithic foods and the other to a Scandinavian-type diet based on something called Nordic Nutrition Recommendations.

These recommendations are updated every few years and revolve around a diet based mainly on wholegrain cereals, low-fat dairy goods, fruit, pulses, fish and vegetable oils.

After six months, those on the cavewoman diet had lost an average of 6.2 kilogrammes of fat and saw an 11-centimetre reduction in waist circumference.

Women on the Nordic diet lost only 2.6kg of fat and their waist circumference decreased by just 5.8cm.

Levels of triglyceride, a type of fat in the blood associated with increased heart disease risk, also dropped significantly in the Stone Age diet women but not those on the Scandinavian regime.

Blood pressure and cholesterol level were similar between the two groups.

Eating like a cavewoman works: Why an ancient diet is the key to modern weight loss

EATING like our Stone Age ancestors, with a diet rich in lean meat, berries and vegetables, could be the key to kick-starting weight loss for post-menopausal women, according to a new study

By PAT HAGAN
PUBLISHED: 16:30, Thu, Apr 3, 2014 | UPDATED: 00:49, Tue, Jan 27, 2015

New research shows a cavewoman diet is potentially one of the most effective ways to slim.

Scientists came up with the findings after tracking female dieters for up to two years and comparing weight loss among those on the cavewoman - or paleolithic - diet with those complying with modern nutritional guidelines.

Results show women who ate like their predecessors lost twice as much body fat in the first six months as those on the modern-day diet.

They also saw their waistlines shrink by a greater amount and levels of harmful blood fats called triglycerides decline more sharply.

Interest in paleolithic eating habits first arose a few years ago when scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, discovered eating like a caveman for just three weeks slashed the risk of heart attacks and strokes in men.

A paleolithic diet usually centres around berries, vegetables and lean meat but bars things like cereals, beans, dairy products and pasta.

‘Tuwid na daan’

The resolution was signed by LP director general and Occidental Mindoro Rep. Josephine Ramirez-Sato; LP secretary general and Western Samar Rep. Mel Sarmiento; LP treasurer and Oriental Mindoro Gov. Alfonso Umali Jr., and Iloilo Rep. Jerry Treñas, who chairs the party’s membership and organizing committee.

The LP’s political and electoral affairs committee chair and Caloocan City Rep. Edgardo Erice, and Javier, Leyte, Mayor Leonardo Javier, president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines, also signed the decision.

The LP said that ensuring decency and moral uprightness among its members was part of its “tuwid na daan (straight path)” advocacy, and that it was “determined to maintain leaders with high moral fiber and integrity, considering that their constituents look up to them for leadership and inspiration.”

Camarines Norte, which has about 300,000 registered voters, is regarded as one of the country’s poorest provinces and among the few areas still beset by insurgency.

Disloyalty

Tallado’s expulsion stemmed from a complaint filed by Daet Mayor Tito Sarion whom the governor had earlier accused of disloyalty for attending a gathering organized by their political rivals in the province. Tallado

also claimed that Sarion was spreading rumors that [the governor] would support a non-LP presidential candidate, charges that the party later dismissed.

Sarion, in turn, accused his erstwhile political ally of disloyalty by inviting opposition senators JV Ejercito and Bong Revilla to the province. Tallado, the mayor said, also has pending criminal and administrative cases of human rights violations and illegal mining operations in Camarines Norte.

In its five-page decision, the LP said “Tallado [had] committed a grossly immoral act that has not only cast doubt [on] his moral integrity, but also tarnished the good name and reputation of the (party) as a whole.”

It added: “Although the LP has no business meddling with its members’ marital problems, the magnitude of the scandal is so overarching that it did not only smear [Tallado’s] image, but also that of the party.”

Saying that his “grossly immoral act” had “tarnished the good name and reputation of the LP as a whole,” the ruling Liberal Party expelled from its roster Camarines Norte Gov. Edgardo Tallado, whose extramarital affair came out on social media in October last year.

In its June 15 resolution, a copy of which was furnished the Inquirer yesterday, the LP noted that the scandal involving the governor had hogged headlines and that a photo showing him shirtless with a half-naked young woman had also become viral on social media.

The affair came to light after Tallado had initially claimed that his wife, Josefina, and her friend had gone missing. But his wife surfaced a few days later and disclosed to media that she had left their conjugal home in Daet, on Oct. 17, 2014, after Tallado had threatened her on suspicion that she had posted on Facebook his picture with his alleged mistress.

The governor’s wife also accused her husband of physically assaulting her.

Components

The design components consist of a frame, a driving mechanism, two paddle wheels, and a floater. Instead of adopting the typical trisikad frame, Magno said they made use of the tartanilla format since it is more stable on water.

The size of the trisikad is also taken consideration, saying its width does not go beyond the size of a multicab or small jeepneys since trisikads most likely pass by narrower streets.
The floater, meanwhile, can be detached from the main frame to make the vehicle lighter when using it purely on land.

Tourism potential

“I think what helped us (win in this competition) was the commercial aspect of our project,” Galindo said.

He said the amphibious trisikad can also help boost Cebu’ tourism. Some resort owners and the local government of Dalaguete, according to the professor, have expressed interest in the project.

However, he said the team will make some improvements in their invention by sourcing out possible materials, which can either cut down the cost or improve the durability of the trisikad.

Patent pending

Galido and his former students are also on the lookout for investors that can mass produce the vehicle.

At present, the team is in the process of having their invention patented with the assistance of DOST- Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI).

Galido said the patenting process may take a year.

TAPI earlier said that the creative research entries of this year’s contest and exhibit will be screened for intellectual property (IP) protection, free of charge.

“From livelihood, to rescue, to tourism, this amphibious trisikad that we have holds a big potential,” Galido said.

DOST awards ‘amphibious trisikad’
By JEANDIE O. GALOLO

Dual purpose. This invention of three mechanical engineering graduates on the suggestion of their professor was cited by the Department of Science and Technology under the college student creative research category.  (contributed photo)

AS THE rainy season officially starts, this trisikad may come in handy.

Three mechanical engineering graduates from the University of San Carlos invented an “amphibious” trisikad, a three-wheeled transport vehicle that is functional in both land and water, making it the first amphibious human-powered transportation of its kind.

Jesse Pastor Magno, Hembrick Palmitos, and Kenn Edward Mirasol, together with their advisor Ronald M. Galindo, received an award from the Department of Science and Technology last Saturday as the first runner-up of the third DOST- Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (Rice) under the category college student creative research.

Close to home

A witness to the flooding Cebu City, particularly in the Talamban area where USC is also located, Galindo advised the group, who were then in their fifth year in college, to invent an amphibious trisikad for their thesis project, one of the requirements for graduation.

“We all know that flooding is really a concern now in Cebu City. Trisikads cannot keep up with the flood. So those whose main livelihood is in driving a trisikad cannot survive during rainy days. I suggested to them (Magno and the group) to come up with a trisikad than can operate in both land and water” Galindo told Sun.Star Cebu.

On December 2014, the group started to fabricate their invention and finished it in March. The research period and the fabrication took ten months, which is equivalent to two semesters. The project cost them P30,000.

“The amphibious trisikad was tested to be effective on both land and water and can carry about three to four passengers on board. Aside from being an amphibious transport vehicle, it can also be utilized as an emergency rescue vehicle during street flooding,” the researchers said.

However, Galindo cautioned that the amphibious trisikad be used only on still waters, like in the case of flooding, and not on rough seas.

Well, at least the photo was well-shared enough to deter some plagiarist from claiming it as his own and entering it in a contest, as what happened a couple of years ago or so when such a photo won the grand prize!

Pangalangan is elected with 59 votes. He will serve for 9 years on the international court.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) â€" Former University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law dean Raul Pangalangan, 56, was elected to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Philippine Mission to the United Nations announced in a Facebook post on June 24.

The Facebook post read: "The Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations congratulates Professor Raul Pangalangan, former dean of the UP College of Law, on his election as judge to the International Criminal Court (ICC)."

The Coalition for the ICC, an independent civil society organization, said in a Twitter post that Pangalangan was elected with 59 votes in his favor against 25 for Jordan's Ibrahim Aljazy. (READ: Former UP law dean nominated to Int'l Criminal Court)

The former law dean and publisher of the Philippine Daily Inquirer fills the seat vacated by Philippine Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who stepped down in June 2014 due to an ailment. She was nominated and elected to the ICC in 2011 but never assumed her position.

William Pace, convenor of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, said in a statement: “The Coalition for the ICC welcomes Dr. Raul Pangalangan’s election as an ICC judge, which gives the Asia-Pacific region its full representation in the Court’s chambers. Dr. Pangalangan’s election gives the ICC a full bench of judges, which is crucial to the proper and efficient functioning of the Court as it handles an increasing caseload.”

The Philippine government nominated Pangalangan based on his "established competence in international law." He was also a Philippine delegate to the 1998 Rome conference that established the ICC. Pangalangan received his doctorate in international law from Harvard University.

Pangalangan was named candidate to the Philippine Supreme Court but was never appointed. He was also nominated to be chief justice after Renato Corona was impeached in 2012.

Pangalangan will serve a term of 9 years alongside 17 other judges on the international court. â€" Rappler.com

As these processes continue and the cells within a banana denature, it eventually becomes rotten and pretty unappealing to eat.

Considering all of these chemical changes in composition within the fruit as it ripens and rots, is it possible to revive a gross old banana using rice and heat?

Debate has previously raged on how to store and best extend the life of bananas â€" should they be left at room temperature or stored in the fridge? Storing bananas in a cold environment drastically slows the conversion of starch to sugars, which means that the flesh stays good for longer. However, when they are placed in the fridge, an enzyme (polyphenyl oxidase) combines with phenols in the peel to create polyphenols, which causes the outer skin to turn brown. So although the fruit inside is still tasty and ripe, the skin looks rotten.

What conclusions did we draw from our investigation? We actually did try this ourselves in the office, and were left with nothing but a still-rotten banana. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we simply have another case of the internet leading us up the garden path for reasons that only the individuals coming up with this rubbish will know.

You can't revive a rotten banana. This leaves us with two hypotheses â€" by placing the banana in the fridge, the banana flesh is preserved but the skin goes brown (which is what we're seeing in this video). Placing the banana in the rice removes moisture from the skin, and gently heating the banana back to a normal temperature may reverse the effects of cooling on the skin, restoring the color.

...That, or it's simply lighting or computer trickery.

The internet has been going bananas recently over a video circulating via Hellou.com, claiming to “unripen” a rotten old piece of fruit, using rice and heat.

So after spending 2 minutes of my life watching a guy blow-dry a banana, we decided to investigate (because science).

Take a look at the video here if you feel so inclined.

How is this possible? Is it even possible? The idea of reviving a battered piece of fruit seems thrifty at best, but let’s take a look at the science behind it anyway.

Bananas are classed as a climacteric fruit, which means that they continue to ripen after picking. Ripening of fruit is associated with composition change, ie, starch converting into sugar. Ethylene gas, a ripening hormone produced by the plant, plays a major physiological role in the process. While the fruit is still attached to the plant, special receptors in plant cells bind to the ethylene, keeping the fruit ripening genes from activating. Once a fruit is picked, plant genes ETR1 and CTR1 turn off, which causes a domino effect that ultimately results in the release of ethylene and turns on other genes that make various enzymes. These include: pectinases, which break down cell walls and soften the fruit; amylases, which convert starch to simple sugars; and hydrolases, which degrade the chlorophyll in the fruit, resulting in the color change â€" in this case from green to yellow. This is believed to invite animals to eat the fruit and disperse seeds via defecation.
