“I just don’t like making any predictions. On top of the ring, let’s see but I think I’m going to knock him down again,” matod ni Ruiz nga gihu-bad sa iyang interpreter ug manager nga si Fernando Dominguez.

“The first fight was a great fight and I think this will be another great fight.”

(Bible Verse: Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. â€"Matthew 6:1)

I’ve always been impressed by the solemn, magnificent simplicity of the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The carefully choreographed event is a moving tribute to soldiers whose namesâ€"and sacrificeâ€"are “known but to God.” Equally moving are the private moments of steady pacing when the crowds are gone: back and forth, hour after hour, day by day, in even the worst weather.

In September 2003, Hurricane Isabel was bearing down on Washington, DC, and the guards were told they could seek shelter during the worst of the storm. Surprising almost no one, the guards refused! They unselfishly stood their post to honor their fallen comrades even in the face of a hurricane.

Underlying Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6:1-6, I believe, is His desire for us to live with an unrelenting, selfless devotion to Him. The Bible calls us to good deeds and holy living, but these are to be acts of worship and obedience (vv.4-6), not orchestrated acts for self-glorification (v.2). The apostle Paul endorses this whole-life faithfulness when he pleads with us to make our bodies “a living sacrifice” (Rom. 12:1).

May our private and public moments speak of our devotion and wholehearted commitment to You, Lord.

Grant me the strength this day, O Lord, to persevere,
to return honor to Your name where I am serving.
My desire is to give myself in selfless devotion
because of Your love for me. Amen.

The more we serve Christ, the less we will serve self.

Most businesses experience growth both intellectually and physically, yet every business seems to run on summer growth. Never changing, never evolving, they hope Jack Frost will give them a wide berth when the cold days roll along. That doesn't always happen and when the business peters down, it's let's blame the economy time, when all they've done is failed to plan for the end of a business cycle.

In the earlier, more foolish days, we tried to keep our prices a mystery. As a result, we'd have dozens of inquiries. All the inquiries turned to custard. Once people found out how much we charged, they just went elsewhere. So why not get those customers to go elsewhere, in the first place?

Traditionally, a business plan is used to secure funding from a lender or a potential investment partner. It serves as something akin to your business's resume, outlining the purpose and scope of your business, identifying the goals, marketing and management, and establishing a basic balance sheet.

Now, even if you aren't going to seek additional funding, even if you're going to grow your business by yourself from your office at home, you'd be wise to put together a business plan. Simply going through the process has value. It'll help you develop a clearly defined vision of what you intend to do with your business and how you intend to do it.

Ten-year-old Asnarul Orim usually looks forward to returning to school after the summer break like the rest of the 200 elementary pupils of Layag-layag, an island village of this city.

But with the start of the new academic year this June, he is somewhat reluctant, hounded by the thought of an early-morning ritualâ€"wading and swimming for 2 kilometers to his school in Barangay Talon-talon on the mainland.

In some areas during high tide, the water level rises up to 4 feet.

“I was always late for school. I could not attend my morning classes on time,” he said. “This is my second time to be in Grade 1 because of tardiness.”

Most of the residents of Layag-layag are fishermen and seaweed farmers. Their children miss their classes because it normally takes them an hour to wade and swim to school.

It was the same reason Orim had to repeat Grade 1 anew this school year. And because he is a regular flunker, he is worried that he may not realize his dream of becoming a policeman someday.

Garbage bag

Sharifa Jamil, 9, would put her school uniform along with books and notebooks inside her bag before wrapping it in thick garbage bag to prevent it from getting wet. With the covered bag on her head, she would wade or swim to school in her underwear.

“When we reach the fishpond, we wash ourselves. We then change into our uniforms and walk to the school,” Sharifa said.

Older boys like Benhur Amirul, 12, would wear worn-out shorts and shirts in crossing the water channel. Their uniforms and other things are also tucked inside their bags wrapped in plastic materials.

“We wash ourselves to clean up before attending our classes,” Amirul said.

Parents have another cause for worry these days because the government set a younger age requirement for children entering preschool.

Ruaina Mawadi, said she could not imagine 5-year-olds wading and swimming to school.

Look for the WHY in advertising and scarcity pops up instantly. All the fancy layouts and the smart headlines can't quite compensate for the niggling question that goes unanswered. All your customers want to know is, Why should I choose you? Why should I take this decision? Why should I spend this money? Why should I look at your website? Why should I read your brochure?' Why should I listen to your speech? 'Why? Why? Why?'

Make Survey Regarding Prospective Clients
Make a survey of the potential clients living near your office. You should be able to reach them within an hour or so. This is a very important factor, particularly from the point of networking services. Also, gather information regarding the number of computers the prospective customers own. Ideally, you should start with the clients having between 10 and 50 computers. Talking in terms of the annual turn over, the client should have annual sales between $1 million and $10 million.

Four Steps To Business Success

All you need for the growth and success of your small business (home based or outside the home) is to hold in mind the condition desired: affirm it as AN ALREADY EXISTING FACT. You are planting the seeds of greatness for your project. Hold the picture in mind of what it will look like when completed. Feel the success in every bone of your body.

Repeat the success steps (constantly):
1. Hold in your mind the condition desired
2. Affirm it as already existing
3. Hold the picture of what it will look like when completed
4. Feel the feeling of success in every bone of your body

BACOLOD CITY, Philippinesâ€"A farmer and his six children in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental were hospitalized Saturday reportedly after dining on poisonous mushrooms.

Dionisio Cabu-al, 45, and six of his childrenâ€"Diony, 19; Jinky, 14; Charie, 12; Margielyn, 10; Jonas, 5; and Dailyn, 3â€"of Sitio Mag-aso, Barangay Orong in Kabankalan City were hospitalized at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City due to suspected black mushroom poisoning, dyEZ Aksyon Radyo-Bacolod reported Sunday.

Cabu-al told dyEZ he harvested the mushrooms, which he described as having black caps and brownish stems, from his farm in Sitio Mag-aso.

He said he squeezed the mushrooms in salt, and made soup from them which they ate for breakfast Saturday morning.

After taking the soup, however, Dionisio said he felt dizzy then “saw the sun turn green.”

His children also experienced the same vision and felt thirsty, he added.

Cabu-al said that the leftover mushroom appeared to be “jumping.”

To counter the effects of the poison, Cabu-al said he and his children ate sugar and drank an infusion made from jackfruit leaves, but they grew weaker.

Luckily, his wife had not eaten the mushroom soup so she was able to seek help, the farmer told dyEZ.

Cabu-al and his children were still confined at the CLMMRH.

The newly formed Governance Commission on GOCCs (government owned and controlled corporations) has the power to abolish non-performing state firms, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said on Monday.

Also with the GCG, Abad said President Aquino will have a free hand to review the current board members and CEOs for retention or replacement.

Abad made the remark after the President signed the GOCC Reform Act of 2011, which among others created the commission, on Monday in Malacañang.

“Finally, governance of GOCCs is now lodged in an agency with a clear mandate,” Abad said.

“The GCG will have the power to pursue the reorganization, merger, streamlining, privatization, or even abolition of agencies,” Abad added.

Under the GOCC Reform Act of 2011 all GOCCs shall be covered by a compensation and position classification system to be developed by a Governance Commission on GOCCs.

The law prescribes limits to the compensation, per diems, allowances and incentives of the members of the board of trustees.

Three alleged members of the “Waray-Waray” robbery gang, including a policeman, were killed in a shootout with operatives on Saturday night in a middle-class subdivision in Parañaque City.

Suspects Rowell Masudog of Tanza, Cavite, and Melvin Nadilgas of Fourth Estate Subdivision, Sucat, Parañaque, were killed in a gun battle with policemen who responded to the gang’s reported presence in the subdivision. A third suspect, identified by the police as Police Officer 3 Ulpiano Bulido Jr., was declared dead on arrival at 9:15 p.m. at the Parañaque Medical Center.

A fourth member of the gang, Martin Ty, 24, of Moonwalk, Parañaque City, survived the ordeal. He will be charged with robbery and holdup, according to Parañaque Police Chief Senior Superintendent Nestor Pastoral.

“Nadilgas and his men have previous records of robbery. Ty won’t talk yet, but he has a lot of explaining to do,” Pastoral said.

Initial investigation showed that Chief Inspector Allan Umipig of the Southern Police District was tipped off at 8 a.m. Saturday that a blue Nissan Sentra sedan with plate number TRM-897 was seen roaming inside the Fourth Estate Subdivision with two Yamaha Neo motorcycles with plate number 7244-TS and one with a defaced plate.

Amid increasing concern over renewed tensions in the South China Sea, the Philippine Embassy here is shopping for excess defense equipment from the United States under Washington’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.

Jose L. Cuisia Jr., the Philippine ambassador to the US, said he has asked the Department of National Defense and Armed Forces back home to provide him with a wish list of military equipment they will need to shore up the country’s defense capability.

He said he expected the defense department to “prioritize” its modernization goals, but was careful not to explicitly link the purchase of US excess defense articles to the Philippine military’s job of securing the territorial sovereignty of the country in the face of China’s alleged intrusions into the areas of the disputed Spratlys group claimed by the Philippines.

“There are defense articles that will be available, and that’s why I’m asking the Navy, Air Force and Army what their needs are,” said Cuisia who made this disclosure during a visit at the embassy here last week of former President Fidel Ramos.

It is part of Cuisia’s job to negotiate with US officials contracts for the purchase of US military hardware. The FMS program is a standardized method for the sale by the US of defense equipment, services and training to foreign countries and governments.

The Philippines and Vietnam on Sunday criticized recent Chinese military activity in the South China Sea amid fears that small confrontations in disputed areas could lead to armed conflict.

Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told a security forum attended by China’s Defense Minister Liang Guanglie that “actions by other states … unnecessarily make other states like the Philippines worried and concerned.”

“Such a sense of insecurity also results when ordinary fishermen are warned by foreign vessels prompting them to leave the area,” he said.

Gazmin’s remarks came after Manila on Saturday accused China of undermining peace and stability in Asia by allegedly sending naval vessels to intimidate rival claimants in the disputed Spratly Islands.

Manila cited incidents from February to May when the Chinese Navy allegedly opened fire on Filipino fishermen, intimidated a Philippine oil exploration ship and put posts and a buoy in Philippines-claimed areas in the Spratlys.

Manila has also queried Beijing over plans reported in Chinese state media to install an oil rig in the area.

Gazmin said that “insecurity is generated when materials for possibly constructing certain structures are found in areas where a declaration has been made to refrain from putting up such kinds of structure or infrastructure.”

If you are a Filipino woman hoping to have a nice vacation in Bali, be careful.

Two Filipino tourists, one of them a blogger, suffered “rude and unfair” treatment “akin to racial profiling” at the hands of immigration officers in Bali, Indonesia, recently, a nonprofit organization said yesterday.

The Blas F. Ople Policy Center, which assists distressed overseas Filipinos workers, sought the help of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in “obtaining justice” for the two Filipino women who were interrogated and bodily searched at the Bali airport.

“The Philippines and Indonesia share a deep and warm friendship. The unprofessional and unethical behavior of a few immigration agents in Bali towards Filipino tourists must immediately be corrected because it smacks of racial or ethnic profiling, something that is unexpected of a true friend like Indonesia,” said former Labor Undersecretary Susan Ople, head of the Ople Center.

Ople said the two women, who preferred to remain anonymous, went to Bali as tourists. But in the immigration line, they were singled out and ushered into the immigration office where they were subjected to a bag and body search “without justification.”

The House resolution’s author, Sorsogon Rep. Salvador Escudero III was not happy about the compromise formula of Binay. “But we leave it to President Aquino to decide the matter. If the administration implements the Binay proposal to have Marcos buried in Ilocos Norte with full military honors, so be it. But his family can still push for his burial in five or ten years at the Libingan ng mga Bayani,” said Escudero, an agriculture minister during Marcos’ 14 years of one-man rule.

Among those who signed in favor of the resolution were Marcos’ widow, Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos, and her nephew, Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez; and former President turned Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her two sons, Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado Arroyo and Ang Galing Pinoy party-list Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo.

A number of lawmakers on Sunday rejected Vice President Jejomar Binay’s compromise formula to give full military honors to the late President Ferdinand Marcos but bury him in his home province, Ilocos Norte.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said that depriving Marcos of his right to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani was unfair. He said the late dictator “deserved such an honor considering his achievements.”

Rodriguez said Marcos was not only the country’s longest-serving Chief Executive but he was also awarded the Medal of Valor in 1942 as part of the resistance against Japanese forces and he was a former defense minister.

“These achievements make him qualified to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani and getting full military honors will not suffice. I think the President should allow his burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani,” said Rodriguez.

Aside from the legal basis for Marcos’ place among those buried at the Libingan ng mg Bayani, Rodriguez noted that public sentiment had turned in favor of granting the former dictator’s wish to be buried with honors based on a recent survey.

Rodriguez was among the 219 congressmen, or three-fourths of the House membership, that endorsed House Bill 1135 urging President Aquino to allow the burial of Marcos in the cemetery reserved for the country’s heroes.

If President Benigno Aquino III would have his way, his defeated running mate in last year’s elections would run the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC).

A senior government official told the Inquirer on Sunday that former Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas remained the President’s No.1 choice to become the next transportation and communications secretaryâ€"a post to be vacated by Jose “Ping” de Jesus, who has resigned from the Cabinet effective June 30.

Mr. Aquino is still trying to convince Roxas to accept the post, according to the official, who asked not to be identified for lack of authority to speak openly to the media on the issue.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned Saturday that clashes may erupt in the South China Sea unless nations with conflicting territorial claims adopt a mechanism to settle disputes peacefully.

“There are increasing concerns. I think we should not lose any time in trying to strengthen these mechanisms that I’ve been talking about for dealing with competing claims in the South China Sea,” he said.

“I fear that without rules of the road, without agreed approaches to deal with these problems, that there will be clashes. I think that serves nobody’s interests,” Gates told a security conference in Singapore, before flying to Kabul.

The islands at the center of the long-running dispute are the Paracel archipelago and the more southerly Spratlys, both potentially resource-rich outcrops that straddle strategic shipping lanes.

China, the Philippines, Taiwan, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam have laid claim to overlapping sections of the territories.

The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Davao Region assured that all school textbooks are now free from errors.

DepEd regional director Dr. Susana Estigoy said the issue on some erroneous textbooks was already addressed several years ago and all books for public and private schools have been reviewed.

Estigoy said regional offices of DepEd have no control over the types of books or their suppliers since only the central office are allowed to purchase textbooks that will be distributed across the country.

She said in order to have an ample time to review all the books before it will be ready for distribution, a team of books evaluators will examine all the content of the books a year before every school year.

Meanwhile, Dr. Luzminda O. Onor, regional textbook evaluation coordinator, said the government has been very critical on every book that will be used since it is crucial to the entire learning process.

"Books containing errors in their content have already been gone long ago," Onor assured.

For several years, DepEd has been criticized for some published textbooks containing erroneous facts.

Every year, before DepEd will distribute textbooks to all public schools across the country, a team of experts, teachers and other professionals will evaluate not only the content of each books but on how effective they will be in the entire learning process. (PNA)
