"Ate" and "Kuya" are addressed to the eldest among the siblings. The origin of these honorific titles are Chinese. The Chinese word for elder brother is "ko" and "a" modifies the word to mean "kin". Likewise, "Ate" is from "chi" and preceded by "a", this becomes "achi". In fact, this is how the Kapampangan (a major language in Central Luzon, not Tagalog) says it.

In some Tagalog regions and other parts of the north, the second eldest is called "diko" for males and "ditse" for females. In Chinese, "di" means "second". In some places, others pronounce this as "dete". "Sangko" means third in the heirarchy of birth. In Chinese, "sang" is "three" in the ordinal count.

Some stops here, but others go on to define their siblings accordingly. Thus, "sitse" for elder fourth sister and "siko" for elder fourth brother (Chinese "si", four) if another one comes along. As for the youngest, the Tagalog addresses them as "Totoy" for little boy, which in Chinese means "foolish son"; and "Nene" for little girl or "dull one" in Chinese. Totoy can become "utoy", "ato", "atoy", "toy", "toytoy", and "Nene" can be "ineng," "neng", or "nini".

Most experts  point to Chinese origins of the terms KUYA and ATE. Kuya is said to be a combination of two Chinese words: ko (elder brother) and a (a term of kinship); ate from the same a plus chi (elder sister).

Cool , diba? 8)

Question and Answer / Re: What is Confucianism?
February 06, 2013, 03:56:33 PM
2. Li

In Confucianism, the term "li" (Chinese: 禮; pinyin: lǐ), sometimes translated into English as rituals, customs, rites, etiquette, or morals, refers to any of the secular social functions of daily life, akin to the Western term for culture. Confucius considered education and music as various elements of li. Li were codified and treated as a comprehensive system of norms, guiding the propriety or politeness which colors everyday life. Confucius himself tried to revive the etiquette of earlier dynasties.

It is important to note that, although li is sometimes translated as "ritual" or "rites", it has developed a specialized meaning in Confucianism, as opposed to its usual religious meanings. In Confucianism, the acts of everyday life are considered rituals. Rituals are not necessarily regimented or arbitrary practices, but the routines that people often engage in, knowingly or unknowingly, during the normal course of their lives. Shaping the rituals in a way that leads to a content and healthy society, and to content and healthy people, is one purpose of Confucian philosophy.

Question and Answer / Re: What is Confucianism?
February 06, 2013, 03:54:05 PM
1. Ren

Ren is one of the basic virtues promoted by Confucius, and is an obligation of altruism and humaneness for other individuals within a community. Confucius' concept of humaneness (Chinese: 仁; pinyin: rén) is probably best expressed in the Confucian version of the ethic of reciprocity, or the Golden Rule: "Do not do unto others what you would not have them do unto you."

Rén also has a political dimension. If the ruler lacks rén, Confucianism holds, it will be difficult if not impossible for his subjects to behave humanely. Rén is the basis of Confucian political theory: it presupposes an autocratic ruler, exhorted to refrain from acting inhumanely towards his subjects. An inhumane ruler runs the risk of losing the "Mandate of Heaven", the right to rule. A ruler lacking such a mandate need not be obeyed. But a ruler who reigns humanely and takes care of the people is to be obeyed strictly, for the benevolence of his dominion shows that he has been mandated by heaven. Confucius himself had little to say on the will of the people, but his leading follower Mencius did state on one occasion that the people's opinion on certain weighty matters should be considered.

February 06, 2013, 03:51:20 PM
Confucian ethics is characterized by the promotion of virtues, encompassed by the Five Constants, or the Wuchang (äº"常), extrapolated by Confucian scholars during the Han Dynasty. The five virtues are:

   Rén (仁, Humaneness)

    Yì (義, Righteousness or Justice)

    Lǐ (禮, Propriety or Etiquette)

    Zhì (智, Knowledge)

    Xìn (ä¿¡, Integrity)

Question and Answer / Re: What is Confucianism?
February 06, 2013, 03:46:18 PM
Confucianism is a philosophical school developed from the teachings of the sage collected in the Analects of Confucius. It is a system of moral, social, political, and religious thought that has had tremendous influence on Chinese history, thought, and culture down to the 21st century. Some Westerners have considered it to have been the "state religion" of imperial China. Its influence also spread to Korea and Japan.

The major Confucian concepts include rén (humanity or humaneness), zhèngmíng (rectification of names; e.g. a ruler who rules unjustly is no longer a ruler and may be dethroned), zhōng (loyalty), xiào (filial piety), and lǐ (ritual). Confucius taught both positive and negative versions of the Golden Rule. The concepts Yin and Yang represent two opposing forces that are permanently in conflict with each other, leading to perpetual contradiction and change. The Confucian idea of "Rid of the two ends, take the middle" is a Chinese equivalent of Hegel's idea of "thesis, antithesis, and synthesis", which is a way of reconciling opposites, arriving at some middle ground combining the best of both.

Most of my Chinese friends in the Philippines trace their ancestry to Fujian, specifically the southern part of the province. Interestingly, forebears of a good number of them come from the island(s) of Quemoy (presently transcribed as Kinmen), which is administered by ROC. I am told that some of them carry 3 passports: Philippine, PRC and ROC.

Yes, the Hakka dialect is spoken in Fujian, and if we look at the following map, the distance from Fujian (colored pink) to Taiwan and Luzon is quite close.

Many Chinese that settled in Ilocos region of the Philippines are of Hakka descent. The Hakka people , when they migrated to the Philippines, settled in Luzon, whereas the Cantonese settled in parts of Luzon, but mostly throughout the Visayas and Mindanao.

The Common Character of People Born in the Year of Snake

People born in the Year of the Snake are reputed to be thoughtful and wise and to approach problems rationally and logically, seldom instinctively. Such people are complex beings, they are clever and men of few words from their birth. Their business is always going well, but they are stingy very often. They are sometimes egoistic and conceited. However they can be very active in their friends’ life. They are often too active, not believing other people and relying only on themselves. Snakes are also very insightful and naturally intuitive. If anyone has a sixth sense, it's those born in the Snake year. This is partly what makes them so mysterious.Snakes come in all varieties of colors and patterns. And maybe that's why people born in the Snake year love to appreciate beauty. People with the Chinese zodiac snake sign are very stylish, fashionable and have exceptional taste.

People born in the Year of the Snake also have a sure touch in money matters but are also inclined to be greedy and somewhat egoistical. Determined and ambitious characters of Snakes take their failures hard. They are usually very attractive on the outside and inwardly, that, taking into consideration their frivolity, can lead to some family problems.

Not to boast, but, one thing I do notice is that Valencia, as a town, produces many board top-notchers in the fields of Engineering and Medicine. 8)
#7181
To add a different point of view to this thread, I want to share a true story. There is an old man who is an old friend of my grandfather's , a farmer who works the basaks in Valencia. He is what you would call "an all-around-businessman"; a farmer, a fisherman, a businessman, and family man; active in the buy and sell business of rice, as well as food products (he raises and sells pigs, too). This man has 4 sons, and was able to send all of his sons to college -- all four are now engineers with a very productive and active career. How did he send all four sons to C.I.T's College of Engineering? He saved. His one son is a district engineer in Cebu's Mandaue City, one son is an electrical engineer here in the United States and two sons are mechanical engineers in Saudi.

Education, truly, is key to success. Despite this man's birth in life (he came from a very, very poor family), his work ethic and ability to financially manage, influenced his sons' direction in their lives.

Kuripot si manong, but, hey, all his sons are engineers (two of them were board top-notchers) :)

To live this life on earth,
To face its struggles and its strife
And to improve their worth.

Not just the lesson in a book,
Or how the rivers flow,
But to choose the proper path,
Wherever they may go.

To understand eternal truth,
And know right from wrong,
And gather all the beauty of
A flower and a song,

For if I help the world to grow
In wisdom and grace,
Then I feel that I have won
And I have filled my place.

And so I ask your guidance, God
That I may do my part,
For character and confidence
And happiness of heart.
