11 Owls

Even during the time of the ancient Greeks, owls were already seen as intelligent animals. While this may appear to be true due to preconceived notions about their “wisdom” this is the “burst your bubble” list item. That’s right, they are actually not that smart compared to other birds.  Technically they shouldn’t even be on this list but how else would we shatter everything you thought you knew?
#7002
12 Rats

Once could easily underestimate the mental capacity of a rat. While they can be revolting sewer dwellers that Hollywood has made them out to be, they are also quite smart. They have very good long term memories and are excellent when it comes to adapting to changing situations.
#7003
13 Falcons

Extremely adept hunters falcons have always been used in the same way as pigeons, to convey messages and do reconnaissance.  Their ability to follow commands and remember territory is formidable.
#7004
14 Rhesus Monkeys

Known for having displayed suicidal tendencies and well planned attacks in a group; it’s safe to say that Rhesus Monkeys are extremely smart and resourceful.
#7005
15 Horses

Horses have always held a special meaning to humans, apart from the fact that they are very rideable and get us places they are also teachable, have good memories, and are able to respond to complicated commands quickly under stress.

Standing on the shore of Lake Turkana, you could be almost forgiven for believing you are at the seaside. There is swell in the waters, a sandy beach, and waves are lapping up to it. A fierce wind is blowing and fisherman boats are moored nearby, ready to go. But this no sea, it’s Lake Turkana â€" the world's largest permanent desert lake and largest alkaline lake in the world covering an area of about 7,000 sq km. The local people call it the Jade Sea because of its breathtaking turquoise color.

Lake Turkana is located in the north of Kenya's Rift Valley, and fed by three rivers: the Omo of Ethiopia, the Turkwel and the Kerio. The long body of Lake Turkana drops down along the Rift Valley from the Ethiopian border, extending 249 kilometers from north to south and 44 km at its widest point with a depth of 30 meters. Between four and eight thousand years ago, the Lake stretched for more than 400 kilometers from the Omo Valley almost as far as Baringo. During this period, the Lake had an outlet, a river flowing northwestwards to join the Nile. -- http://www.amusingplanet.com/

(Emir C. Bariquit)

How Big Can We Get?
http://testtube.com/
by Jack J. Shamama

Some animals, like the blue whale, keep getting bigger and bigger over time! How big are humans able to grow?

One common misconception is that people are growing taller with each generation: Going back 1,000 years, people were just as tall as we are now. Nutritional deficits during childhood caused humans to shrink an average of two-and-a-half inches during the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to poor diets, disease and climate can have an effect on how tall someone grows up to be. People always have had the potential to be as tall as we are now.

Robert Wadlow is the tallest person on record. He grew to be just one inch shy of being nine feet tall: He was 8'11" (2.7m) when he died at the age of 22 in 1940. Wadlow and other extremely giant people suffer from a condition where a tumor presses up against the pituitary gland in their brain, causing it to secrete an abnormally large amount of growth hormone. There's a limit to how tall healthy people can become due to gravity: the taller a person grows, the more they weigh, the larger their bones, muscles, and other bodily resources need to be in order to keep them alive. They need more blood, and more blood requires more pressure from the heart. There's a limit to how big a heart can be because there's only so much room in their chest.

Animals like whales, on the other hand, can grow to enormous sizes because buoyancy of water helps to support their weight. Astronauts can grow as much as three percent taller when they're in zero gravity because the space between their vertebrae expands. You would get taller if you were on a planet with less mass than the Earth because it would have less gravity. Mars has only 38% the gravity of Earth, so if a child were to grow up on the Red Planet, they would be taller than they'd be on Earth. They would have to stay on Mars, however, because their larger frames would have trouble adjusting to Earth's gravity.

At least 170 people were injured

(BAGHDAD)â€"An attack by the Islamic State group on a crowded marketplace in Iraq’s eastern Diyala province has killed 115 people, including women and children, in one of the deadliest single attacks in the country in the past decade.

The mostly-Shiite victims were gathered to mark the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which ended Friday for Iraqi Shiites and a day earlier for Iraqi Sunni Muslims.

Police said a small truck detonated in a crowded marketplace in the town of Khan Beni Saad Friday night in what quickly turned celebrations into a scene of horror, with body parts scattered across the market. At least 170 people were injured in the attack, police officials said, speaking anonymously because they are not authorized to brief the media.

Men quickly emptied boxes of tomatoes to use them for carrying the bodies of small children, witnesses said, while adult victims lay scattered around the attack scene waiting for medical assistance.

“Khan Beni Saad has become a disaster area because of this huge explosion,” Diyala resident Sayif Ali said. “This is the first day of Eid, hundreds of people got killed, many injured, and we are still searching for more bodies.”

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on Twitter accounts associated with the militant group.

Poems and Poets / somewhere i have never travelled
July 18, 2015, 09:37:22 PM
by e e. cummings, 1894 - 1962

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

When fried, this dulse is said to taste like bacon
#7030
AFP Relax â€" Fri, Jul 17, 2015

Scientists in the US have used their power for good and developed a new strain of antioxidant-packed seaweed that tastes like bacon.

That’s right. Bacon.

When fried, the dulse seaweed, which resembles translucent red lettuce, takes on the curious flavor of bacon, researchers said -- a characteristic that could be particularly useful for vegans but also for health-conscious bacon lovers.

Because according to the Oregon State University scientists who developed and patented the new strain, in addition to tasting like the salty pork product, the seaweed packs a powerful punch: protein, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that are equal to twice the nutritional value of kale.

Originally grown to serve as feed for abalone, a delicacy in East Asia, scientists finally realized its commercial potential after being visited by a business professor looking for entrepreneurial projects for his students.

Instead of just rearing healthy abalone, business professor Chuck Toombs helped Chris Langdon realize that they were sitting on what could become the next big ‘superfood.’

And while food scientists have managed to develop dulse-based rice crackers and salad dressings, its most exciting flavor potential lies in its dormant bacon profile -- characteristics that are released when fried.

Chefs in the Portland area such as Jason Ball, who had previously worked at the University of Copenhagen’s Nordic Food Lab, are now testing dulse in their kitchens to explore the seaweed’s culinary potential.

Ball is currently testing dulse veggie burgers, trail mix and even beer.

Dulse grows wild along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines. Langdon's strain of dulse is cultured in tanks of seawater, making it accessible year round.

22 Baboons

Baboons are old world monkeys who have cognitive abilities very similar to chimpanzees and orangutans. In terms of the way they behave, one can see how these creatures resemble people. Unlike other animals, studies show that at some level baboons know how to identify stress and cope with it. They create extremely complex social systems and can think critically when confronted with difficult situations.

23 Ants

Though they are small, they have the ability to creatively withstand calamities that would that would wipe another species. Ants are often seen coordinating in massive groups to build nests and hunt for food; and they accommodate to their environment very well. All notable points when it comes to measuring intelligence.

24 Spiders

Spiders are among the smallest creatures to possess a proportionately high level of  intelligence. Especially the White-Mustached Portia spiders. These spiders dwell African; Asian; and Australian forests and have demonstrated special learning skills.

25 Squids

Squids are said to be among the brainiest invertebrates in the world. Their brain structure is different from other invertebrates in the ocean, as they share complex features similar to the human brain. Like human beings, squids can be very curious about their environment. They have the ability to learn new skills and develop the capacity to use tools that can either help them repress their boredom and protect them from harm.

25 Most Intelligent Animals On Earth
http://list25.com/
POSTED BY JOSEF   ON JUNE 3, 2013

Although most people wouldn’t typically associate extreme intelligence with animals, that is a bit of a misconception. While they are obviously not able to match the computational and meta cognitive power of the human brain there are certain things some animals specialize in for which their minds are uniquely adapted. In some ways you could say they are smarter (or more functional) than even humans at performing these tasks. These are the 25 most intelligent animals on Earth.

In the isolated Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, cannabis is so prolific that it is seen as a pest, and is fed to pigs rather than being used by humans for fibre or intoxicant purposes.

.......

Cannabis is likely to have spread and established itself in Bhutan after the end of the last glacial period around 11,700 years before present (BP). It is generally thought that cannabis originated in Central Asia, in the region now comprising Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and China’s Xinjiang Province.

Cannabis is remarkably prolific in Bhutan, and can be found growing wild throughout the country, even in urban areas. It is commonly found growing along roadsides, in gardens and vegetable patches, in wasteland, in forests and even in cracks in the pavements or in overgrown gutters on buildings.

Hmm, tightening of sagging skin? Reminds me of this ridiculous, disturbing fairy tale...

This one may be rather long, but believe me: it’s a story worth reading.

A king mistakenly believes that two hideous, smelly, deformed old women are actually the most delicate, beautiful and scrumptious of young tender maidens.

As you might expect, he has never actually laid eyes on them, since (fortunately for them) they’re hidden behind a large wall â€" but he becomes so passionately aroused after kissing one of the old woman’s fingers through the keyhole in the gate, that he begs to be able to spend the night with her. She agrees to bed him, but only if he will take her in the dark â€" since, according to herself, she is ‘far too modest to expose her nakedness to him’. The king rushes home to wait in anticipation for night to fall and his love to come to him.

In an attempt to make herself feel more youthful to the king’s touch, the old woman takes all her loose, sagging skin and ties it behind her back with string. She then covers herself with a long shroud, and limps in the dark to the king’s chambers.

After he has finished ‘the deed’ and she’s fallen asleep, the king discovers the secret his ‘tender maiden’ has hidden behind her back, and after lighting a candle he finds that his bed-mate is actually a disgusting old hag. He freaks out and throws her out the window (as you do).

Luckily the old woman has so much loose, sagging skin that she gets caught in the branches of a nearby tree and is left hanging there. Some fairies fly by and find the sight of the old woman so funny that they endow her with gifts of wondrous beauty, intelligence, and youth as a reward; she now has the body and face of a 15 year old! The king looks out his bedroom window in the morning, discovers a stunningly beautiful girl sitting in his tree, and immediately takes her for his wife.

The new queen, not wanting to reveal her beauty secret to her sister, tells the old hag that she has had herself skinned alive. The remaining old woman â€" presumably not wanting to be left out â€" takes herself quick-smart to the nearest barber shop, and requests that she also be skinned alive. When the barber has removed her skin down to her navel, the old woman dies of blood loss and pain (letting out a big fart as she does so) and her sister and the king live happily ever after.

The moral of the story? Something to do with the vanity of aging women I guess â€" but regardless of the moral, that is one damn bizarre fairy tale. -(Giambattista Basile â€" Il Pentamerone (Entertainment For The Young) 1634) -- http://listverse.com/

Sunandha Kumariratana was the daughter of King Mongkut and Princess Consort Piam of Thailand. She was born in 1860 and was the first queen consort.

In 1880, when Kumariratana was only 19 years old, her boat capsized on the way to Bang Pa-In Royal Palace. She drowned despite the fact that there were many onlookers present that could have helped her. They didn't because they were not allowed to touch the queen. If they had, they could have been put to death. So ironically and tragically, they were not allowed to save her life. -- http://entertainment.omgfacts.com/

Bible Study / Sensus divinitatis
July 15, 2015, 03:23:56 PM
Sensus divinitatis ("sense of divinity"), also referred to as sensus deitatis ("sense of deity") or semen religionis ("seed of religion"), is a term first used by French Protestant reformer John Calvin to describe a hypothetical human sense. Instead of knowledge of the environment (as with, for example, smell or sight), the sensus divinitatis is alleged to give humans a knowledge of God.

In Calvin's view, there is no reasonable non-belief. Neo-Calvinists who adhere to the presuppositionalist school of Christian apologetics sometimes appeal to a sensus divinitatis to argue that there are no genuine atheists. --Wiki

They load the straw on the donkey, and walk the rest of the way. In the final leg of the trek, the path is covered with loose rocks, so the mule needs to be lead with great care.

The duo finally reach the ice mine â€" Los Hieleros â€" at around midday. Ushca then gets to work, using a pick to break blocks of ice off the glacier. He sculpts the ice into cubes, wraps them in straw, and loads them up on to the mule again. Ushca and Juan then start the journey back home; they usually return by 4pm. Every Saturday,  Ushca travels to Riobamba’s markets to sell the ice at $2.5 for an 80-pound block. He makes about $25 a week selling ice.

Interestingly, Ushca’s ‘natural ice’ is still in demand. People claim that it has healing properties, and it is still used to make traditional fruit juices and ice creams. And ever since his story was covered by the media, it seems that his humble profession has transformed into a lucrative business. He earns a fair bit of money from tourists as well, who pay him about $60 an day for a guided excursion to the ice mine.

Tuesday 14 July 2015

A French tourist has died after being gored during a festival in which bulls are released onto the streets of the town of Pedreguer.

The 44-year-old, who was identified only by the initials L.O., suffered serious injuries during the run at the Bous al Carrer, or Bulls in the Street, festival in the Mediterranean province of Alicante.

He died at the scene early on Tuesday, according to the town hall.

The tourist been stood with a group of friends when the bull charged them, according to reports.

Festivities have been cancelled until Wednesday after the death, which came as Spain's most famous bull running in Pamplona came to an end.

When asked about his profession, Ushca fondly recollects the time when his entire community sold ice. “We would go out in a group of friends â€" four or six groups,” he said. “I would go with my mother and father, with my brothers and sisters.” Now, he only has his son-in-law Juan to keep him company. The walk itself has become much longer as well, because of the receding glaciers.

Meet Baltazar, the Last Ice Merchant of Ecuador
http://www.odditycentral.com/
By Sumitra on June 22nd, 2015

While the rest of the world reaches into the freezer for ice, there’s someone on this planet who actually climbs mountains to chop it off. Meet Baltazar Ushca, Ecuador’s last hielero, or ‘iceman’.

Ushca is the last surviving practitioner of his family’s trade â€" passed on from father to son for centuries. At least once a week, the 68-year-old spends five hours hiking up Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador’s highest peak. He keeps going until he reaches the ice mine that has fed him and his family for generations.

Negotiating the steep 14,700-foot path is no joke, especially at Uscha’s age. But he continues the family tradition of cutting ice from the cave and shaping it into blocks. He then transports the blocks, by mule, down to the nearest city of Riobamba, where they are sold.

Despite his age and his short stature (4ft 11in) Ushca can carry two 66-lb blocks of ice on his shoulders. And he’s quite happy working on the mountain that he considers to be sacred. “This is a man’s work,” he said, proudly. “I am happy when I walk. Father Chimborazo looks after me.”

Prometheus is an inner satellite of Saturn. It was discovered in 1980 (some time before October 25) from photos taken by the Voyager 1 probe, and was provisionally designated S/1980 S 27.
In late 1985 it was officially named after Prometheus, a Titan in Greek mythology. It is also designated Saturn XVI (16). Pronunciation for Prometheus is /prɵˈmiːθiÉ™s/, US dict: prō·mÄ"′·thÄ"·əs; Greek: ΠρομηθεύÏ,.

Prometheus is extremely elongated, measuring approximately 136 by 79 by 59 km. It has several ridges and valleys and a number of impact craters of about 20 km diameter are visible, but it is less cratered than nearby Pandora, Epimetheus, and Janus. From its very low density and relatively high albedo, it is likely that Prometheus is a very porous icy body. There is a lot of uncertainty in these values, however, and so this remains to be confirmed. --Wiki
