Jokes and Humor / If students get wrong concept.
April 26, 2008, 09:37:27 AM

A college student was in a philosophy class, where there was a class discussion about whether or not God exists, The professor had the following logic:

“Has anyone in this class heard God?” Nobody spoke. “Has anyone in this class touched God?” Again, nobody spoke. “Has anyone in this class seen God?”

When nobody spoke for the third time, he simply stated, “Then there is no God.”

The student did not like the sound of this at all, and asked for permission to speak. The professor granted it, and the student stood up and asked the following questions of his classmates:

“Has anyone in this class heard our professor’s brain?” Silence.

“Has anyone in this class touched our professor’s brain?” Absolute silence.

“Has anyone in this class seen our professor’s brain?”

When nobody in the class dared to speak, the student concluded, “Then, according to our professor’s logic, it must be true that our professor has no brain!”

This case happened in a hospital’s Intensive care ward where Patients always died in the same bed and on all Sunday morning at 11a.m, regardless of their medical condition.

This puzzled the doctors and some even thought that it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths took place at 11 AM.

So a world-wide expert team was constituted and they decided to go down to the ward to investigate the cause of the incidents. So on the next Sunday morning few minutes before 11 a.m. all doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves
what the terrible phenomenon was all about.

Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books and other holy objects to ward off evil……..
Just when the Clock struck 11…

And then……

then…..

then……..

Santa Singh, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward, unplugged the life support system and plugged in the vacuum cleaner.

DOH probes rectal surgery on YouTube

By Jhunnex Napallacan, Jeannette Andrade
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Posted date: April 18, 2008

CEBU CITYâ€"Health Secretary Francisco Duque III Thursday vowed to punish the doctors and nurses found to be involved in a rectal operation on a patient that exploded into a scandal after being shown on YouTube.
Duque said he was dismayed that the taking of pictures and videos was allowed during the operation at Cebu City’s Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) and that the patient was made fun of.

The operation was for the removal of a perfume canister that got stuck in the patient’s rectum after the patient said he had a sexual encounter with a male partner on New Year’s Eve.

The 39-year-old patient, a resident of Basak-Pardo, Cebu City, claimed he was drunk during the incident and he realized only the following morning that a foreign object had been left in his rectum.

He went to the government-run VSMMC, the largest government hospital in Central Visayas, and underwent the operation on Jan. 3. He said he was sedated and did not know that the procedure was being recorded with a cellular phone camera.

The video, which was uploaded on YouTube, showed over 10 people inside the operating roomâ€"cheering, jeering and making nasty gay jokes as the canister was pulled out of his body.

Duque said he was aghast at the spectacle and that the medical personnel in the room should be held liable for their actions.

“Of course, it was bad. Where can you find doctors that would allow the taking of pictures of patients that violate patient confidentiality,” Duque, speaking in Filipino, said over radio dyLA here. “Regardless of whom you did it to, it was very bad. It violates protocol. It’s prohibited.”

Only in some cases

Duque said the taking of pictures or videos during an operation was allowed in certain cases but the person taking the picture should not be allowed in the operating room.

“No one is allowed unless it is with the consent of the patient and for educational purposes. But even then, the photographer stays outside. You can only take a picture or video through the window. You cannot get inside the operating room,” he added.

Duque said he had ordered Central Visayas regional director Susana Madarieta and the Center for Health Development (CHD) regional office to conduct separate investigations.

Parallel probes

The management of VSMMC is expected to release its findings on Friday.

But Duque said the Department of Health would see if the investigation of the hospital jibed with the DOH probe.

Duque said the DOH would determine if there was a need to recommend the revocation of the licenses of those found to be involved. He said the sanctions would depend on the level of participation of the people in the operating room.

“We will look at the level of violation and level of involvement,” he said.

Duque said the patient should not feel intimidated and should stand up for his rights.

“We will help him. We will ensure he will get justice,” he said.

It depends

The patient’s lawyer said his client was just waiting for the findings of the hospital before deciding if he would press charges.

The lawyer, Guiller Ceniza, said he was also coordinating with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines to find out what criminal charges to file.

But Ceniza said that if the hospital would impose disciplinary actions against those involved, the patient might no longer pursue the case.

The Visayas Ombudsman has conducted a fact-finding inquiry into the incident.

Dr. Madarieta said a committee had been formed to review the findings of the hospital investigation.

Lesson for everyone

Madarieta told the Inquirer: “This is a lesson learned for everybody. We have to strictly implement hospital policies. This would not have happened if there was no laxity on the enforcement of policies in hospitals.”

“We are doing everything to ensure that this does not happen again,” Madarieta stressed. “It has to be clarified why the staff in the operating room reacted as they did.”

Madarieta said that there were instances in an operating room when the staff involved would “rejoice” if the surgery was a success.

“This was a rare case for medical study, which is one reason why the taking of video footage was, maybe, allowed. But disseminating the video is an entirely different matter,” she said.

Madarieta remarked that the incident might make some people needing surgery to shy away from an operation for fear that they might end up on the Internet.

Cameras banned

She said the VSMMC administration had already undertaken corrective measures, including the removal of the controversial video clip from the YouTube website.

The hospital has also issued a memorandum to all nursing students, doctors, and operating room staff reminding them of the prohibition against bringing cellular phones equipped with cameras and other video equipment inside the operating room, Madarieta said.

Unethical and scandalous.

That's how several doctors described the behavior of Vicente Sotto Memorial
Medical Center (VSMMC) doctors and nurses during the operation to remove a
perfume canister from the anus of a male patient.

Doctors involved in the operation were seen laughing boisterously during the
operation, which was recorded on video. A video clip was later uploaded to
the video sharing website YouTube.

Dr. Emmanuel Gines, VSMMC media liaison officer and emergency room
department head, said in a radio interview that they will apologize to the
39-year-old patient identified only as Jan-Jan because of the embarrassment
he suffered.

Gines said at least six doctors, including Dr. Ariel Arias, are being
investigated. He could not say how many nurses were placed under
investigation.

A five-member body tasked to look into the controversy is expected to
release its findings this Friday.

Gines, a surgeon, said that taking a video and laughing at a patient while
he is being operated on is inappropriate.

"On the question of the behavior of the doctors and nurses, it was really
improper," he said.

He said their investigation began even before the scandal came out in the
media because the hospital leadership is concerned about the incident. He
urged the media to just wait for the committee's report.

While admitting that the incident placed VSMMC in a bad light, Gines assured
the public that what happened to "Jan-Jan" was an isolated case that will
not occur again.

"We have enforced and strengthened our (privacy) policy as far as the
operating room and anywhere of the sections in the hospitals after this
incident, especially the banning of cellular phones with or without
cameras," he said.

In a separate interview, Basak Pardo Barangay Captain Dave Tumulak said
Jan-Jan is bent on filing a complaint and has already executed an affidavit
against the doctors and nurses, some of whom were shown in the video.

Jan-Jan will also complain before the Department of Health (DOH), the
Professional Regulations Commission, and the Office of the Ombudsman
Visayas.

Dr. Wyben Briones, a neuro-surgeon for 30 years connected with VSMMC and
hospitals like Chong Hua and Velez, said doctors are bound by their
profession to respect the patient's privacy.

In a TV Patrol World report, he said medical practitioners must respect the
privacy of the patient at all times.

"For us, that (privacy) is sacred. No doctor or nurse shall announce that
somebody is suffering from an illness or that somebody is positive of Aids
(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)," Briones said.

Briones, who is also an Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf) member, said
it is really objectionable for somebody to take videos of an operation and
upload it to YouTube for all the world to see.

What is acceptable, he said, is for a doctor operating on a patient to allow
young doctors and nurses to witness, as long as the aim is to educate them
further.

"Di ta ma-doctor kon wa pa ta tudlo-i or wa pa ta mo-agig (we could not be
doctors if we do not go through) training. And the Sotto hospital (VSMMC) is
a teaching hospital. But what happened here is a violation of ethical
standards," he added.

Briones said non-resident doctors and nurses who are not on field duty are
not even allowed to witness an operation.

In his case, he said, he only allows neuro-surgeons to witness him treating
his patients if it concerns their profession.

As of press time last night (Tuesday night), Tumulak, Jan-Jan and his lawyer
were still having a conference to come up with an airtight complaint.

Tumulak said they will also include Dr. Gerardo Aquino Jr, VSMMC chief
medical officer, who was in Manila attending to an official business when
the operation happened.

Tumulak said Jan-Jan is demanding for the hospital to furnish him the
official records of the January 3 operation for easy identification of all
doctors and nurses involved.

Dr. Susana Madarieta, DOH Central Visayas director, said they will review
the result of the VSMMC investigation to ensure that there is no whitewash.

It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to shout at them. Some are over-sensitive and there's nothing worse than an over-sensitive woman.

My name is Ron. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Julie. When I took early retirement last year, it became necessary for Julie to get a full-time job for the extra income that we need.

Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I now usually get home from the pub about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she nearly always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't shout at her, instead I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch at the pub so eating out again is out of the question; I'm ready for some home cooked food when I get home.

She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it's usual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.

Another symptom of ageing is complaining. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to do the shopping during her lunch hour. But we take them for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two or even three days. That way she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then won't hurt her. I like to think tact is one of my strong points.

When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She has to take a rest when she has only half finished mowing the lawn and several extra breaks when she's vacuuming through the house. It does annoy me, vacuuming when I'm trying to watch 'Match of the Day', but I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to make herself a nice cup of tea and just sit for a while, and as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me too.

I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Julie. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your ageing wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other, eh?

EDITOR'S NOTE:

Ron died suddenly last week. He was found with a 24-inch Stanley screwdriver rammed up his ass with only 2 inches showing.

His wife Julie was arrested, but the all-woman jury accepted her defence that he accidentally sat on it.

Weird and Extreme / Longest jail sentence
April 12, 2008, 08:57:00 PM

The longest jail sentence passed was in the United States - 10,000 years for a triple murder. Dudley Wayne Kyzer was jailed for 10,000 years by a court in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1981 for murdering his wife. He was then sentenced to two life terms for murdering his mother-in-law and a college student.

In 1994 Oklahoma rapist Darron Bennalford Anderson received a 2,200-year jail sentence. When he appealed and won a new trial, he was convicted again and resentenced to more than 90 additional centuries behind bars - including 4,000 years each for rape and sodomy, 1,750 years for kidnapping, 1,000 years for burglary and robbery, and 500 years for grand larceny.

In July 1997, the state Court of Criminal Appeals held that the grand larceny charge was double jeopardy on the robbery conviction and thus dismissed it. So the court cut Anderson's sentence by 500 years, speeding up his release date to the year 12,744!

PENGUIN TEA TIMER
Making tea, though easy to do, is also time consuming.
Once you pour the hot water into the cup, you must patiently hover over it, waiting for the tea to steep.
Well, the Penguin Tea Timer happily does the waiting for you.
Place your tea cup under the beak and set it to the desired time.
As you turn t he timer dial, the beak lowers the tea into the hot water.
When time is up, a bell sounds and the penguin automatically lifts his beak,
removing the tea bag from the water.

DO NOT LET CHILDREN PLAY WITH FLIP PHONES!
A new study has revealed that flip phones can cause very serious side effects to the reproductive development of young children.
Keep all flip phones out of the reach of children.

21 PERSONS IN A MINI CAR, IT WAS A TIGHT SQUEEZE . . .

BUT THEY MADE IT FOR A WORLD RECORD!
#797

Britain's Daily Mirror was the first big-circulation newspaper internationally to picture an active streaker on its front page. Its March 18th 1974 issue showed an attractive blonde streaker called Sally pinned against a wall by a London policeman.

Streaking - running naked from one point to another, for a dare, raising money for charity, exhibitionism, or whatever the motive - suddenly became a worldwide phenomenon in 1974. The press loved it as it gave them a ready excuse, as if they needed it, to print nude pictures and titillating stories of the streakers' escapades.

The press cameras were at Twickenham, England, in April 1974 to capture the sight of a Australian man who dashed onto the pitch nude in front of the 53,000 fans at the England v France rugby game. The 25-year-old was probably the first known streaker at a renowned sporting event.

First streaker at an Olympic Games was 23 year old Michael Leduc, who reportedly "cavorted nude" at the closing ceremony in Montreal 1976.

The 500 costumed young women pretended not to see him and continued on with their dance. A Montreal newspaper quoted Leduc as saying he wanted to show the world what a beautiful body he had. The police were not amused, hoswever, and they reportedly kicked and beat the streaker as he was removed from the stadium.

Inspiration & Hope / Fill it with all you are
April 09, 2008, 04:01:16 AM

If you've been looking for an opportunity, this is it. If you've been waiting for the right time to move forward, that time has arrived.
On this day, you have the power to take action. In this moment, you have the ability to make a difference.

Hopes, dreams and wishes can be powerful and compelling, yet if they remain imprisoned within you, you'll never know their true beauty and value. Now is when you can take the very best of what's in you, and give it room to grow.

Reality is where you are right here and now. And the great thing is, you're able to shape that reality as it arrives.

So take the opportunity to shape the reality of this day to mirror the best that is within you. This is when your values, your visions, and your unique essence can be given expression and fulfillment.

The time is upon you to create and to experience life's richness in your own special way. Fill it with meaning and purpose, and fill it with all you are.

Inspiration & Hope / It comes back
April 09, 2008, 03:59:22 AM

You have no way of knowing how or when all the things you do will come back to you. What you can know is that they will.
Some obscure and seemingly useless fact you learn today could end up playing a major role in your life next week, or five years from now. Some small favor that you do tomorrow may come back to you in a few months as a grand opportunity.

You never know exactly how life will reflect back the face you present to it. Yet eventually, and quite faithfully, it does come back to you.

The value that you put into life becomes the value that you experience from life. The more love you give, the more love you are able to know.

Your words do not end when you speak them, and your actions do not stop when you've completed them. They go out into life and begin connecting you with the people, circumstances and things that resonate with those words and actions of yours.

Live as though the things you do, in one way or another, will come back to you. For you can be certain that they will.

Ralph Marston
