Ergo, Lorenzo, one cannot outrightly claim that the concept of unity and peace are utopian concepts.  They are indeed ideal concepts which are hard to achieve because of current realities.  Nihilism is a denial of reality, and in this context, present realities are but carefully considered.

Even philosopers do have a hard time debating whether or not peace is a utopian concept.  Kants perpetual peace is of course a utopian concept. But peace, sustained by society through cross-cultural understanding is achievable.  Less that you have submitted that peace in Mindanao could be achieved through open communication.
#702
Lorenzo, for all you know, a utopian concept is an unachievable concept.  Political leaders would not use utopian concept as a vision. Generally, political leaders are more pragmatic and realistic.

You are a history buff right? It can also be viewed that there are both dark ages and times of peace in human history.

If you submit to the ideals of N. Michiavelle, then you have a different understanding of peace.
Peace is interpreted in different means.  In the united nations, the new name for peace is development. If we constrain ourselves only to the present reality, then we cannot visualize a sustainable peace.
If you have a conservative understanding of peace, then it is utopian concept. If you have a liberal and sociological perspective of peace, then it is possible.

There were segments of the human history where peace and unity were achieved.
#703
If we refrain from believing the concept of peace? where would our world go?
If we stop envisioning a strong and united society, how do we extend our hands to our separatists brothers and sisters in Mindanao?

It is sad to hear it from you.

There is no connection to the freedom of speech.  But in academic discussions you have to support your claim accurately and categorically.

And as an administrator here, you should know... that deleting your previous post is a manner of misleading the discussion.

you claimed to be an ethical person, right?

if it is a utopian concept why do states and political leaders envision a stong, united and peaceful society?

you never mentioned social and economic benefits of rice in your deleted post.  and the discussion of the socio-economic benefits of rice is beyond the point.

lol lorenzo really. Admit it very simply, that rice plantations does not categorically help in minimizing  green house gas..

why have you deleted the post in the first place?

This was your claim lorenzo.  Rice plantations are good because it is "green" and because of its photosynthetic properties.  According  to you, if the Boholanos continue to plant rice,  this would surely benefit reduction of green house gas emissions.

But you fail to point out that rice fields contribute to methane emissions which is 20 times more powerful than CO2 and holds more heat.

So please dont delete your previous postings.  It is also a humbe expression of intelligence to accept inaccuracies.

A strong, united and peaceful society is not a concept alone but a vision.
There is no political leader who envisioned a weak, defragmented and chaotic society..

A concept of a strong , united and peaceful society is not a utopian concept.  It can be achieved.
Equality is a utopian concept, remember.

what youve said in your deleted reply is that Boholano should not worry  so long as they plant rice because rice has photosynthetic properties.

This implies that rice plantation helps in minimizing CO2 emissions.  But ironically, they may aid in minimizing CO2 emissions but they contribute to the methane emissions.

Hello?I was not saying to stop the production of rice. That is outside the topic.  This was just a reply to your statement which is rather unsupported.

It is necessary to understand the international mechanism that support  for the reduction of the emission of GHG gases.
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The major feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions .These amount to an average of five per cent against 1990 levels over the five-year period 2008-2012.

The major distinction between the Protocol and the Convention is that while the Convention encouraged industrialised countries to stabilize GHG emissions, the Protocol commits them to do so.

Recognizing that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity, the Protocol places a heavier burden on developed nations under the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities.”

The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on 11 December 1997 and entered into force on 16 February 2005. 184 Parties of the Convention have ratified its Protocol to date. The detailed rules for the implementation of the Protocol were adopted at COP 7 in Marrakesh in 2001, and are called the “Marrakesh Accords.”

We have to take note that it is only United States  which has not yet signed the Kyoto Protocol.  China did not signed and it is only not required because it is still a developing country

Don't we dont know that a lot of methane emissions come from the rice fields?  Methane is twenty times more effective as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide is.  (IPCC. Climate Change 2007: Synthesis Report. United Nations Environment Programme)

It holds more heat.

Morals are formed because of careful observance of acceptable traits or social attitude in a society and this is institutionlized in any free agency, be it religion, education, traditions, customs, practices and beliefs.  Religion may be only one of the institutionalizing agencies of morality, but it reserves the most legitimate authority, most especially in the Philippines.

Theoretically, not.  A strong and peaceful society may not be founded by religious  beliefs.  A strong and peaceful society is built by people who knows how to respect other religion and its beliefs.

It is when we impose our religious ideals and beliefs on others that leads to unreasonably conflict and unworthy discourse.

We remember how the framework of religion is reflective of our personality, our ego.
If our religion is being at stake and attacked, our ego is attacked too.
That is why I find it necessary to discuss religion in this thread not on religious basis but on sociological perspective, on how societies evolved because of religion.

Because, the discussion on claim of  one and true religion would never end. Like what I said before, religion is a matter of believing without seeking proofs.  Because no religion in this world has categorically ( by science and by solid evidence) proven the existence of their God. It is a matter of believing, it is a matter of faith.

There is God of course. He has different names, worshipped by different people of different color, traditions and beliefs.

#721
The sense of God makes every believer hope on a better future, justice and equality.  Where the concept of justice and equality are hardly achieved in this seemingly unfair and unjust world,  the belief of a God gives every person a sense of meaning and purpose.

The concept of a religion which is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs, defines societies.

More than the tangible evidence of the human color, a person is basically identified by his religion.  Some sociologists even claim that religion is even more powerful than gender.  Ones concept of morality and values are formed and honed by religion and as what we know, our morals and values defines who we are as persons.

I remember my Philosophy professor  saying that morality is universal among all other religion but the understanding of which maybe different.
The etymological meaning of morality comes  from L.L. moralitatem (nom. moralitas) "manner, character," from L. moralis.  Simply said, morality is an institutionalized manner , conduct or character.   A lot of people refute that they have their own morality indepedent of social morals defined by any religion or any institution for that matter, but then and again, we must also remember that morality is a societal concept.  Whether atheist or pagans, their concept of morality did not sprout out anywhere, it is formed and influenced by institutions within the society.

Where there is no free agency, there can be no morality. Where there is no temptation, there can be little claim to virtue. Where the routine is rigorously proscribed by law, the law, and not the man, must have the credit of the conduct." - William H. Prescott, "History of the Conquest of Peru," 1847

Ive seen the same story in a German television with a German victim.  The culprit is also involved in a Nigerian gang.  The German was victimized by a Nigerian man who claimed to be a woman in an internet dating site.  The poor German sent money for the fare and visa processing of the "woman", as he waited for hours in the airport, nobody came.  He was contacted by a purported doctor that the "woman" was hospitalized and sent a corresponding bill from the hospital.  When checked, the hospital was non-existent.
Very sad.

I remember Pope John Paul II emphasized the concept of ecumenism in better understanding and association with people with different religious affliliation.  Ecumenism mainly refers to initiatives aimed at greater religious unity or cooperation.
In its broadest sense, this unity or cooperation may refer to a worldwide religious unity; by the advocation of a greater sense of shared spirituality across the three Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Most commonly, however, ecumenism is used in a more narrow meaning; referring to a greater cooperation among different religious denominations of a single one of these faiths.

It is only through ecumenism, religious tolerance and respect that we can truly achieve religious understanding and peace which the world really needs today.

qouted from fdaray:

Yes, Christianity is the one true religion. That may sound awfully dogmatic and narrow-minded, but the simple truth is that Christianity is the only true religion. Jesus said that He alone was the way to the Father (John 14:6), that He alone revealed the Father (Matt. 11:27; Luke 10:22). Christians do not go around saying Christianity is the only way because they are arrogant, narrow-minded, stupid, and judgmental. They do so because they believe what Jesus said."

Do muslims also believe in Jesus Christ as a God?  Muslims also say that Islam is the one and true religion because Allah told them so? There comes the problem.

I have always been proud of the rich language or dialects in the Philippines. Just a point of reflection, when a Bol-anon speaks Binol-anon, would the people from Manila understand him? I guess not or maybe one or two words, nothing more.

But when a german in baden-württemberg speaks schwäbisch, at least germans in northern Germany could understand him a little.  Why do I know this? I only speak hoch deutsch and my boyfriend is a schwäbisch.  Makasabot man ko nila, mag istorya sila sa iyang parents bisag hoch deutsch lang akong hibal an.

So dili ko mabaligya sa germany pero pwede nako siyang ibaligya sa bohol tag mamiso.

So kung tan awun nato, the diversity of our language reflects the diversity of our culture.

heheheheh  comedy..

We should always think about its ethical and cultural dimension.  The danger of too much emphasis on the English language would be tantamount to producing talking dolls, speaking the same language.  And the problem could be, our dolls would 'nt be much any different from dolls in India, Africa etc...

It is only in our differences that we can claim uniqueness.  Language is an indication of a wealth of culture.

Text from bennylene
I speak English, Japanese and Filipino (not to mention the dialects Tagalog, Bisaya and Ilonggo) with working-level proficiency, and my principal livelihood is translation. In my experience, I believe that we can study different languages simultaneously. Because of our exposure to different dialects, Filipinos are predisposed to the acquisition of foreign language skills. English is as different from Japanese is as Japanese is to Binol-anon, but we can achieve working-level proficiency in all of them if we just try hard enough, with our level of success of course determined partly by our in-born verbal aptitudes. But I believe improving our English skills will not necessarily mean the degradation of our Filipino skills.

Just my two cents' worth.

hi benelyne

Have you read the multiple intelligence theory of Dr. Howard Gardner?  Every person has different propensity on intelligences and maybe yours is linguistic intelligence. So you cannot say that if you have done it, other people could do it. Because then again, we have different inclinations.
Just a way of thinking, ngano kahibaw man sila mokanta unya ako yabag man?

please consider reading this,

the eight identified multiple intelligences

Bodily-Kinesthetic
This area has to do with movement and doing. People are generally good at physical activities such as sports or dance. People who have this intelligence usually learn better by getting up and moving around. They may enjoy acting or performing, and in general they are good at building and making things. They often learn best by physically doing something, rather than reading or hearing about it. Those with strong bodily-kinesthetic intelligence seem to use what might be termed muscle memory. They remember things through their body such as verbal memory or images. They require fine motor skills that are required for dancing, athletics, surgery, craft and other movement functions. In artificial Intelligences programs are being developed to mimic the movement of athletics through games and other computer related items but they will not take the place of the actual movement of this intelligence physically. Careers which suit those with this intelligence include athletes, dancers, actors, surgeons, builders, and soldiers. Although these careers can be duplicated through virtual simulation they will not produce the actual physical learning that is needed in this intelligence.

[edit] Interpersonal
This area has to do with interaction with others. People in this category are usually extroverts and are characterized by their sensitivity to others' moods, feelings, temperaments and motivations, and their ability to cooperate in order to work as part of a group. They communicate effectively and empathize easily with others, and may be either leaders or followers. They typically learn best by working with others and often enjoy discussion and debate. The artificial intelligences for this intelligence can be excellent. Although this is a feeling and emotional intelligences, with today's computer and online material people can learn, relate, with each other. Web cam and other technical material has allowed people to function in this intelligence. The personal touch has to still be there to implement these functions. Careers which suit those with this intelligence include politicians, managers, teachers, and social workers.

[edit] Verbal-linguistic
This area has to do with words, spoken or written. People with verbal-linguistic intelligence display a facility with words and languages. They are typically good at reading, writing, telling stories and memorizing words along with dates. They tend to learn best by reading, taking notes, listening to lectures, and discussion and debate. They are also frequently skilled at explaining, teaching and oration or persuasive speaking. Those with verbal-linguistic intelligence learn foreign languages very easily as they have high verbal memory and recall, and an ability to understand and manipulate syntax and structure. This intelligence is high in writers, lawyers, philosophers, journalists, politicians and teachers. Artificial Intelligences can be used in this function with written literature from the intelligences, also through computers and other audio media to enhance the intelligence.

[edit] Logical-Mathematical
This area has to do with logic, abstractions, reasoning, and numbers. While it is often assumed that those with this intelligence naturally excel in mathematics, chess, computer programming and other logical or numerical activities, a more accurate definition places emphasis on traditional mathematical ability and more reasoning capabilities, abstract patterns of recognition, scientific thinking and investigation, and the ability to perform complex calculations. Many scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors and economists function in this level of intelligences. This probably is the most useable intelligence that can compare with the artificial intelligences. The military has used this intelligence in war, with the aim of finding enemy targets with mathematical calculations. Engineers have used computer programs and robots to build and construct projects. Doctors have used robots to operate on patients. Economists have used computers to forecast the economy in the future.

[edit] Naturalistic
This area has to do with nature, nurturing and relating information to one's natural surroundings. This is the eighth and newest of the intelligences, added to the theory in 1997. This type of intelligence was not part of Gardner's original theory of Multiple Intelligences. Those with it are said to have greater sensitivity to nature and their place within it, the ability to nurture and grow things, and greater ease in caring for, taming and interacting with animals. They may also be able to discern changes in weather or similar fluctuations in their natural surroundings. They are also good at recognizing and classifying different species. "Naturalists" learn best when the subject involves collecting and analyzing, or is closely related to something prominent in nature; they also don't enjoy learning unfamiliar or seemingly useless subjects with little or no connections to nature. It is advised that naturalistic learners would learn more through being outside or in a kinesthetic way.

The theory behind this intelligence is often criticized, much like the spiritual or existential intelligence (see below), as it is seen by many as not indicative of an intelligence but rather an interest. However it might have been a more valuable and useful intelligence in prehistoric times when humans lived closer to nature.

Careers which suit those with this intelligence include scientists, naturalists, conservationists, gardeners and farmers.

[edit] Intrapersonal
This area has to do with introspective and self-reflective capacities. Those who are strongest in this intelligence are typically introverts and prefer to work alone. They are usually highly self-aware and capable of understanding their own emotions, goals and motivations. They often have an affinity for thought-based pursuits such as philosophy. They learn best when allowed to concentrate on the subject by themselves. There is often a high level of perfectionism associated with this intelligence.

Careers which suit those with this intelligence include philosophers, psychologists, theologians, writers and scientists.

[edit] Visual-Spatial
Main article: Spatial reasoning
This area has to do with vision and spatial judgment. People with strong visual-spatial intelligence are typically very good at visualizing and mentally manipulating objects. Those with strong spatial intelligence are often proficient at solving puzzles. They have a strong visual memory and are often artistically inclined. Those with visual-spatial intelligence are also generally have a very good sense of direction and may also have very good hand-eye coordination, although this is normally seen as a characteristic of the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence.

Some critics [4] point out the high correlation between the spatial and mathematical abilities, which seems to disprove the clear separation of the intelligences as Gardner theorized. Since solving a mathematical problem involves reassuringly manipulating symbols and numbers, spatial intelligence is involved in visually changing the reality. A thorough understanding of the two intelligences precludes this criticism, however, as the two intelligences do not precisely conform to the definitions of visual and mathematical abilities. Although they may share certain characteristics, they are easily distinguished by several factors, and there are many with strong logical-mathematical intelligence and weak visual-spatial, and vice versa.[citation needed]

Careers which suit those with this intelligence include artists, engineers, and architects.

[edit] Musical
This area has to do with rhythm, music, and hearing. Those who have a high level of musical-rhythmic intelligence display greater sensitivity to sounds, rhythms, tones, and music. They normally have good pitch and may even have absolute pitch, and are able to sing, play musical instruments, and compose music. Since there is a strong auditory component to this intelligence, those who are strongest in it may learn best via lecture. In addition, they will often use songs or rhythms to learn and memorize information, and may work best with music playing in the background.

Careers which suit those with this intelligence include instrumentalists, singers, conductors, disc-jockeys, and composers.

[edit] Other intelligences
Other intelligences have been suggested or explored by Gardner and his colleagues, including spiritual, existential and moral intelligence. Gardner excluded spiritual intelligence due to what he perceived as the inability to codify criteria comparable to the other "intelligences". Existential intelligence (the capacity to raise and reflect on philosophical questions about life, death, and ultimate realities) meets most of the criteria with the exception of identifiable areas of the brain that specialize for this faculty.[5] Moral capacities were excluded because they are normative rather than descriptive.[

Do they integrate English in their curriculum or do they use english as a medium of instruction? These are two different things and for sure, in Japan, they dont teach science, mathematics, japanese history in English..

In the Philippines, most especially in private schools, they teach Philippine History in English and the funny thing is, maybe its only the Filipino subject which is not taught in English.  The usage of the Philippine language  "Filipino" has been a minority.. heheheh ironic....

It is of course an advantage to be multi-lingual. There is no question about that.  But it is a shame that we lose our most tangible heritage and wealth and that is our own language.

General Topic / Federalism in the Philippines
January 12, 2009, 11:00:09 PM
There are different kinds of democratic governments and this can be classified as "according to form" and "according  sharing/separation of powers of the branches of government".

According to form:
centralized versus federalist

a centralized form of government is similar to that present system of government we have right now.  Most of the governmental functions rest on the national government. There is a top-bottom management.  Although the local government code of 1991 provides a good avenue for decentralization, political decisions on public and fiscal administration is still being held by the national government

federalist
the country is subdivided into independent political states which have full political and economic control of their territory

according to the sharing/separation of the branches of government:
presidential vs. parliamentary

presidential
there is a separation of the branches of government
executive, legislative and judiciary

parliamentary
there is a fusion of the executive and legislative branch and this is called the parliament

would a federalist, parliamentary government be applicable in the Philippines?
share your views..

would a national ID system lessen proof of idenfication requirements?
have you experienced being asked of a drivers license, a prc license, an  sss id.. etc. just to prove your identity?

a very funny experience was with the western union/rcpi along cpg north avenue.  they didnt accept my passport as a proof of identification because they needed an ID.. hahahha.

This must also be viewed not only in pragmatic and utilitarian perspective but most importantly socio-cultural dimensions.

We start thinking what happened in the treaty of paris of december 10, 1898? Article III says"Spain cedes to the United States the archipelago known as the Philippine Islands, and comprehending the islands lying within the following line: ... geographic description elided ... The United States will pay to Spain the sum of twenty million dollars ($20,000,000) within three months after the exchange of the ratifications of the present treaty.   The country was bought at a price and that includes the right to exploit her natural resources.
We try also to recall history during the commonwealth period, what were the kinds of benefits the Philippines has enjoyed?  During the Commonwealth years, Philippines sent one elected Resident Commissioner to the United States House of Representatives, as Puerto Rico currently does today.

The american occupation showed positive results to the country as a state as well:

Benevolent Assimilation
• By President Mckinley
• A regime was introduced by the United States, the Filipinos played the role of junior partner

Progress in education
• The best contribution of the Americans was Public Education
• Emphasized democratic traditions and the practical application of laws and principles
• The regulation of religion to the optional category was based on the principle separation of the church and state, under which the church had no say in running the public school system
• Compeled Filipinos to stud English language.
• Enrollment of students in the public school was compulsory..
• They gave students free books, pencils and other school supplies.
• “thomasites” â€"teachers, who came to the Philippines on board the S.S. Thomas and who replaced American soldiers.
• “Pensionados”-filipino who were sent to the United Sates because they showed aptudes in some branches of learning. When they return, they teach or work for the government.University of Sto. Tomas, the Escuela de Derecho, the Instituto Burgos-still used Spanish as a medium of their instruction but they were forced to abandon it.
• The system increased Filipinos literacy.

Public Wealth and Welfare
• When the Americans came they minimized the spread of diseases and to improve, the health of the people.
• Epidemics were prevented or minimized by the establishment of the quarantine service.
• Educated the people with hygiene and sanitation.
• Filipinos that time were ignorant with the power of minute germs to cause death. They believed in superstitions.
• The board of public health was created on 1901 which became a bureau at later date.
• In 1917-1918, cholera and small pox epidemics broke out, the mortality per 1000 persons progressively diminished in the succeeding years.
• The vocational training given to the orphans and the juvenile delinquents resulted in their moral and physical rehabilitation.
• At the turn of the century, the average Filipino height measured 5’2 and 5’4 but with improved diet, exercise and sports the height increased to between 5’4 and 5’6.

Trade and Commerce Industry
• In 1909, when the American Congress passed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act, that the partial free trade relations between the Philippines and the United States were established. All Philippine exports were allowed to enter American markets except rice.
• To correct the inequality in the law, American congress passed the Simmons-Underwood Tariff act in 1913, which abolished the quota limitations on Philippine export products like hemp, sugar and tobacco.
• The development of domestic trade under the Americans was, therefore, not actually a boon to the Filipinos, who had to play second fiddle to the aliens.
• In the industry, the Philippines developed in the sense that factories, such as textile and cigar and cigarette factories, multiplied.
• Mining, one of the backbone of Philippine economy.
• Other foreign markets were neglected so that the closure to thundutiable Philippine exports resulted in economic dislocation. That is why Speaker Osmena and Resident Commisioner Quezon opposed free trade relation.
• Tydings of Mcduffie Independence Act of 1934 was about the restriction of the exportation of Philippine sugar, tobacco, hemp and coconut.
• The over-all effect of the Phlippine-American free trade relation was, therefore, the placing of Philippine economy at the mercy of the Americans.

Transportation and Communication
• The means of transportation vastly improved, for while the ancient bull carts, carretellas and calesas existed, the cars, trucks and railways speeded up the means of transportation.
• Rail road transportation was preceded by government’s acquisition of the Manila-Dagupan Railway Company, which became the Manila railroad Company.
• The inter-island shipping by the Americans in 1902 opened a hundred ports to domestic shipping. Ships owned locally were allowed to engage in inter-island shipping.
• Progress in communication was notable. Telephone lines, radio-telephone service, ordinary mails, money orders, air mail letters and packages were available.
• The improvement and building of roads, railways and bridges meant transportation of American tools, equipments and materials.
• As the history of the Philippines under the United States eloquently testifies, American altruism was engrafted with profit motive.

Individual Freedom
• McKinley’s “Benevolent Assimilation” Proclamation and his “Instructions” to the second or Taft Commission laid the bases of American policy in the Philippines.
• Filipinos were not allowed to enjoy full measure of freedom during the American tutelage.
• The Sedition Law of 1901, passed by the Philippine Commission, considered it seditious of any Filipino to advocate independence.
• The “flag” law of 1907, prohibited the display of Philippine flag.
• During the American regime, Filipinos were able to exercise their freedom.
• The pages of the nationalistic periodical El Renacimiento and its tagalog section, the Muling Pagsilang, were full of vitriolic attacks on the Americans, culturing in the most famous “Aves de Rapina” (birds of prey) libel case.
• Nationalistic plays were staged to remind the people of their freedom and independence.
• As the condition of peace and order improved, the repression of civil liberties was removed.

Political Consciousness
• Colonization implies the bringing over of American practices and institutions.
• Partisans politics was brought by the Americans.
• The Filipinos were as yet too politically naïve to understand the intricacies of modern politics.
• After the creation of bicameral legislature in 1916, Philippine politics followed the American groove.
• Thus, many American political practices finally found a rich soil in the Philippines.
• Despite the negative effects of imported brand of politics, Filipinos learned intricate machinery of government.

Language and Literature
• One of the most lasting American influences in the Philippines.
• English became the medium of instruction in schools and creative expression.
• Writers wrote, poems, essay, short story, novels and dramas
• The drama and the novel were the most neglected branches of literature, although few novels and plays were written.
• Adaptation of American words and phrases in the national language is a lasting influence. Some examples are, bulakbol(black ball) and paul (foul)
• In the third decade Filipinos started to translate English phrases to the national language.
• Over enthusiasm and ignorance of the tagalog idioms compelled some writers to translate English phrases indiscriminately.

It is important to reflect much on this period because it is during this time that we have experienced a de facto government under the american regime.

Filipinos born during this time were not american citizens and still were filipinos who needed visa to enter the any american territory.  Puerto Ricans right now are also not americans by nationality and by citizenship.  Since the summer of 2007, the Puerto Rico State Department has developed the protocol to grant Puerto Rican citizenship to Puerto Ricans.

Filipinos during the commonwealth era "enjoyed" american control on governmental and fiscal administration.
