How To Tips / How to Prevent Plagiarism

How to Prevent Plagiarism

Plagiarism can be deliberate or inadvertent. In the latter case, the fault usually lies with sloppy organization and note-taking. Many students lose track of the source of the notes that they have taken, and eventually come to believe that they are original ideas.

Whether or not you mean to plagiarize is ultimately irrelevant.

If you use the ideas or words of another as your own, it is a violation of the St. Andrew’s Honor Code.

When you are doing research, record the names of the sources where you are deriving words, ideas or information. You should record the page number, website or other specific references to the place you got your information.

Refer to the Library page on the Research Process as soon as you receive a research assignment. Make sure you work through the process to define your task clearly and to specify the information you’ll need. If you carefully complete the steps on the Research Page, you should have a question that drives and organizes your research. If you are really stuck, talk to your teacher or any librarian for help.

Planning will help prevent panic as your deadline approaches. Break the task into small parts and assign yourself deadlines for each step.

Use your own ideas and words.

Practice is essential to learning. Each time you choose your words, order your thoughts, and convey your ideas, you can improve your writing.

Give credit for copied, adapted and paraphrased material.

If you repeat another’s exact words you MUST use quotation marks and cite the source. If you adapt a chart or paraphrase a sentence, you must still cite.

Avoid using others’ work with minor "cosmetic" changes.

Examples: Using "less" for "fewer", reversing the order of a sentence, changing terms in a computer code, or altering a layout. If the work is essentially the same, you must give credit.

Beware of "Common Knowledge".

You don’t have to cite "common knowledge", BUT the fact must really be common knowledge. That Abraham Lincoln was the U.S. President during the Civil War is common knowledge; that over 51,000 Union and Confederate soldiers died in The Battle of Gettysburg [1] is not.

There are no freebies.

ALWAYS cite words, information, and ideas you use if they are new to you. No matter where you find it! Even if it’s in an encyclopedia or on the Internet, you MUST cite it.

WHEN IN DOUBT, CITE!

Science and Research / Self-verification theory
February 09, 2011, 11:06:28 PM
Self-verification is a social psychological theory that focuses on people’s desire to be known and understood by others. The key assumption is that once people develop firmly held beliefs about themselves, they come to prefer that others see them as they see themselves.

Developed by William Swann (1983), the theory grew out of earlier writings which held that people form self-views (i.e. self-concepts and self-esteem) so that they can understand and predict the responses of others and know how to act toward them. Because chronic self-views play a critically important role in understanding the world, providing a sense of coherence, and guiding action, people become invested in maintaining them. To this end, people engage in a variety of activities that are designed to obtain self-verifying information.

Under-Ease pants: designed to hide the smell of farts

According to Under-Tec's president and inventor Buck Weimer, the Under-Ease is an underwear that provides "protection" against human gas. The weird product, designed by this American manufacturer, has a built-in multi-layered, replaceable filter made of felt, charcoal and fibreglass wool. To prevent gases escaping without passing through it, the underpants are made from air-tight fabric and completely sealed with elastic around the waistband and legs. They are supposed to be worn at anytime, anywhere --in bed, at work and at social events, professional meetings and so on. The pants are machine washable and the filters can last for weeks, even months, depending on the frequency of use and laundering. The pants are available on the firm's website in a range of sizes and cost from £12 to £15.

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - The Philippine Azkals carved out a hard-earned 2-0 victory over the Mongolia Blue Wolves in the first leg of their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying tie at the jampacked Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City on Wednesday night.

Emilio "Chieffy" Caligdong scored the Philippines’ opening goal in the 42nd minute.

Caligdong tricked a defender near the Mongolian goal and nutmegged the Blue Wolves' goalie to hit the back of the net.

The second goal was scored by Phil Younghusband in the 92nd minute, deep into injury time.

Following a sneaky pass from Jason Sabio, the Filipino-British midfielder muffed his attempt against a Mongolian defender.

Younghusband, however, followed this up with a curling shot that sent the Filipino spectators to jubilation.

He acknowledged the cheers coming from the crowd, even doing a cartwheel to celebrate their second goal.

The Azkals, not known for their offense, put up a solid attacking game against the Blue Wolves.

In the first half alone, the Filipinos had 7 goalscoring attempts against the Mongolians' 2 attempts.

Ecstatic
Caligdong was so ecstatic with the victory.

“Sobrang saya ko,” said the Ilongo booter. “Kung anong ibinigay na instructions ni Coach [Hans Michael Weiss], ginawa ko lang.”

Weiss said the win has effectively sent a message to other competitors in the Asian level.

“The Philippines is now in the competition,” said the German coach, who was tapped by the Azkals’ management after the team’s success in the 2010 Suzuki Cup.

The Azkals received a major morale boost from more than 18,000 Filipino fans who trooped to Panaad Stadium.

Weiss said the home crowd has certainly perked the Azkals’s confidence.

“They are wonderful,” the German said of the Filipino fans. “Fantastic, I can’t find the words.”

Big blow
The Mongolians said during the post game that the Filipino booters drew them into a tough battle.

One of their players recieved a red card in the first half after being slapped with 2 yellow cards, one for a foul and another for handball.

This, they said, was a big blow to them as this reduced their line up to just 10 players.

The Blue Wolves will seek their revenge on March 15 when the home-and-away cup tie resumes in Ulan Bator.

The Azkals, on the other hand, plan to spend 6 days of training and acclimatization in Baguio City to prepare themselves for Mongolia’s cold climate.

P3 million fund from PNoy
Meanwhile, Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta Jr. disclosed that President Benigno Aquino III released P3 million from his Social Fund for the organizational needs of the Azkals-Blue Wolves match.

"Although President Aquino earlier sent his regrets that he would be unable to grace the occasion, he, however, released P3 million to help us fund this big international football event," Araneta said.

"We are grateful for his support of the Azkals and Philippine football, which should inspire our boys to play their best in front of our countrymen," Araneta said of the event backed by the POC, PSC, Smart and Mizuno.

Araneta added that the Azkals’s emphatic victory served as a belated present for the President who celebrated his 51st birthday last Tuesday.

Among those who witnessed the match were Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Peping Cojuangco and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia, whose sports agency helped install the additional light at Panaad so that the match could be televised.

Also present were ABS-CBN Chief Executive Officer Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III, ABS-CBN Vice-President for Sports Peter Musngi, Batangas Vice-Governor Mark Leviste, former Commission on Elections (COMELEC) commissioner Gregorio “Goyo” Larrazabal and Negros Occidental Congressman Carlos “Charlie” Cojuangco. â€" With reports from Ira Pedrasa, abs-cbnNews.com and TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News

Vanity

In conventional parlance, vanity is the excessive belief in one's own abilities or attractiveness to others. Prior to the 14th century it did not have such narcissistic undertones, and merely meant futility. The related term vainglory is now often seen as an archaic synonym for vanity, but originally meant boasting in vain, i.e. unjustified boasting; although glory is now seen as having an exclusively positive meaning, the Latin term gloria (from which it derives) roughly means boasting, and was often used as a negative criticism.

In many religions, vanity in its modern sense is considered a form of self-idolatry, in which one rejects God for the sake of one's own image, and thereby becomes divorced from the graces of God. The stories of Lucifer, Narcissus (who gave us the term narcissism) and others attend to a pernicious aspect of vanity. Philosophically speaking, vanity may refer to a broader sense of egoism and pride.

Researchers in Melbourne, Australia have discovered that “positive thinking could be helpful, but you shouldn’t force it. For most people, deliberate attempts to be optimistic compromise their wellbeing.”

Just as deliberate attempts to appear religious compromise a person's credibility.  :-X

Poems and Poets / The pathetic hypocrite
February 09, 2011, 08:08:32 PM
by Lianna

I thought you were true to your word
you preached everyday
and i just find out
you've been such a two face
being a hypocrite
tell us to act like adults
when you're acting like the little girl
you're the one at fault
go ahead take your anger out on me
get your attention so they'll see
the hypocrite you really are
to say this isn't hard
you're far from perfect you're just so sad
i'm happy we're not friends, and i'm not mad

Quotable Quotes / The Vain Man
February 09, 2011, 07:09:21 PM
William Penn. (1644â€"1718).  Fruits of Solitude.
The Harvard Classics.  1909â€"14.

Part II

The Vain Man

  236. But a Vain Man is a Nauseous Creature: He is so full of himself that he has no Room for any Thing else, be it never so Good or Deserving.   1

  237. ’T is I at every turn that does this, or can do that. And as he abounds in his Comparisons, so he is sure to give himself the better of every Body else; according to the Proverb, All his Geese are Swans.   2

  238. They are certainly to be pity’d that can be so much mistaken at Home.   3

  239. And yet I have sometimes thought that such People are in a sort Happy, that nothing can put out of Countenance with themselves, though they neither have nor merit other Peoples.   4

  240. But at the same Time one would wonder they should not feel the Blows they give themselves, or get from others, for this intolerable and ridiculous Temper; nor shew any Concern at that which makes others blush for, as well as at them, (viz.) their unreasonable Assurance.   5

  241. To be a Man’s own Fool is bad enough, but the Vain Man is Every Body’s.   6

  242. This silly Disposition comes of a Mixture of Ignorance, Confidence, and Pride; and as there is more or less of the last, so it is more or less offensive or Entertaining.   7

  243. And yet perhaps the worst Part of this Vanity is its Unteachableness. Tell it any Thing, and it has known it long ago; and out-runs Information and Instruction, or else proudly puffs at it.   8

  244. Whereas the greatest Understandings doubt most, are readiest to learn, and least pleas’d with themselves; this, with no Body else.   9

  245. For tho’ they stand on higher Ground, and so see farther than their Neighbors, they are yet humbled by their Prospect, since it shews them something, so much higher and above their Reach.   10

  246. And truly then it is, that Sense shines with the greatest Beauty when it is set in Humility.   11

  247. An humble able Man is a Jewel worth a Kingdom: It is often saved by him, as Solomon’s Poor Wise Man did the City.   12

  248. May we have more of them, or less Need of them.
