Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This weekend, I was able to meet up with my very good friend Donald, a fellow collegiate at Allegheny during my undergrad days. It was enlightening to find out that he recently landed on a Financial Analyst position at a very large banking institution here in the Midwest. It was good to see him and to catch up ! Time passes too fast. There was a time when he and I were still 21 and 20, now, we are in our late 20's. :P

How was battlefield 'work', Jenneth? ;D

As for me, just got back from my doctoral class. I had hospital duty today from 8am till 4 pm, then attended a doctoral class from 5:30 pm till 9:00 pm. 3 & 1/2 hours of listening to Dr. Nelson talk about qualitative research methods and some tips on creating question batteries when conducting a medical survey. Today is the last day of my class entitled, "Introduction to Doctoral Studies." Another Ph.D class done. Now, 20 more to go. :P

Ah, the life of a scholar-practitioner. Well, i will now focus on designing my forthcoming dissertation topic.

How is everything with you, Jenneth? And keep on posting , i like reading about your daily pursuits.

The difference between a scholar and a learner

-A. Lorenzo Lucino.

When one considers the dichotomy between a learner and a scholar, one has to identify the similarities as well as the differences. The two individuals, the learner and the scholar, are both interested in academic learning either it be in the social sciences, natural sciences, humanities and even in the mathematics and engineering subdivisions. The difference between the two is that the learner is the one who finds out the basics of a particular subject matter or one who learns from articles written by scholars. Scholars are lifelong academics whose passion for learning is manifested through research, collaboration with other scholars in the field of interest, particularly in psychology. Scholars are individual who plow through the body of knowledge and add new information through active research, asking and answering questions that have manifested through past research.

There is a quote by Donald Foster that comes to mind, “No one who cannot rejoice in the discovery of his own mistakes deserves to be called a scholar.” What does this mean? What is the importance of such a statement? Scholars conduct research on a regular basis in the form of qualitative research methods or quantitative research methods. During the process of data acquisition, there will be times where ones’ hypothesis will not be supported by data, forcing one to accept the null hypothesis. Now, just because one’s hypothesis was not supported by data does not necessarily mean one failed, but means that the variables must be reconsidered. This means that research scholars can now retrench and reconsider a new question to ask, or to address any errors committed in the methodology of the research.

Scholars are individuals who love to learn, who are interested in conducting a life-long work on research and contributing the body of knowledge. The learners learn from the works of scholars , the scholars are those who champion qualitative and quantitative methodologies and claim new knowledge through research.

The skill of questioning in research

by: A. Lorenzo Lucino

One very important aspect of research is acquiring new data. Data that is acquired through medical research, philosophical research, psychological research, even historical research relies on questioning. In fact, the field of psychology, in particular, has developed new methods to acquire accurate data through the development of questionnaires that are administered through batteries.

In the field of psychology as well as in medicine, asking questions can be done through structured interview, unstructured interview or through questionnaires. The difference between structured interview from unstructured interview is that in structured interviews, the participants are asked specific, predetermined questions in a controlled manner. The most structured interview is when the interviewer simply reads closed-ended questions to participants and records their responses. In an unstructured interview, the researcher has a general idea of the open-ended questions that will be asked, but there is a form of freedom in the form of discussion between the interviewer and the interviewee (Heiman, 2001.)

Developing one’s questioning skills is important because one can better acquire answers through when interviewing respondents during empirical studies. Questioning can also be beneficial when reading empirical articles, working on research conclusions on one’s dissertation because one can gage one’s development. Questioning is an essential aspect of critical thinking and part of metacognition. By questioning a particular methodology, one see if statistical results support one’s hypothesis or if it will support the null hypothesis.

There are 1.3 million Suluks (Tausugs) who live in Sabah. There is also an additional 800,000 Filipinos who live/work in Sabah. Demographically speaking, there are more Filipinos in Sabah than Malaysians. The Malaysian Army is also now targeting and assaulting Filipinos living in Sabah for fear of their relation to the Sulu Royal Army.

I hope and pray that the Malaysian Government allows the Philippine Government the right to provide the necessary aid to the Citizens of the Philippines.

The Philippines must also ensure that it does all it can to provide and protect for its citizens in the aforementioned area.
#6743
Fr. Roel,

Did you know that last week, the Malaysian Air Force sent 2 squadrons of their F/A-18 Fighters to bomb a known Sulu Royal Army camp in Lahad Datu. However, their lethal firepower backfired. The Sulu Royal Army had already dispersed , and the soldiers that were in the camp were actually Malaysian Army soldiers. Malaysia's Air Force had fired on their own soldiers , destroying an entire convoy of tanks, and armed personnel carriers as well as unknown number of Malaysian soldiers inside.

The Tausugs have now spread into Semporna, and three other neighbouring towns in Sabah. The Malaysian Navy and the Philippine Navy's blockade of the Sulu Sea have failed to cordon off the straits. Thousands of MNLF soldieres have already arrived into Sabah and have reinforced the Sulu Royal Army.

Malaysia has sent 7 Army Battalions to crush the Philippine Fighters. Malaysia has opened a Pandora's Box. I fear Sabah will be another war torn region.

#6744
Sabah is the 2nd largest state in the Malaysian Federation. In addition, Sabah is home to a huge plantations as well as oil refineries and natural gas deposits. The Malaysian Armed Forces will not relinquish control of Malaysia without a fight.

Realistically speaking, Sabah cannot be reclaimed unless Malaysia relinquishes military control, or if the Philippines takes it by force. At the current situation, both parties are trying to solve this issue and maintain the status quo.

The Malaysian Armed Forces, however, are having a difficult time "wiping out" the Sulu Royal Army. Decades of peace in Malaysia have resulted in their army's inability to counter the guerilla warefare tactics of the Sulu Royal Army. It is also known that the MNLF have now sent hundreds of its battle-hardened forces to Sabah to reinforce the Sulu Royal Army.

I find it quite ironic how this situation has come to be. The MNLF as well as the Sulu Royal Army were trained by the Malaysian Armed Forces to combat the Philippine Government years prior. Now, the MNLF is now at war with the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Now Malaysia can taste and see the results of guerilla warefare. Malaysia as a nation has provided resources and support for muslim insurgents in Southern Thailand, in Indonesia and even in the Philippines. Malaysia is now tasting a little bit of karma.

They are now fighting people who they trained and encouraged to fight the Philippine Government.

Few Ilocanos know it but President Carlos P. Garcia was actually an FBI (Full Blooded Ilokano). While he was born and raised in Bohol, his parents were both from Bangued, Abra. Under the principle of Jus Sanguinis, (by virtue of blood) he was a natural born Ilocano. He was a teacher, poet, orator, top-notch lawyer, Congressman, Governor, Senator, Vice President and Secretary of Foreign Affairs.  He was also a guerrilla leader during World War II. He was known for his "Filipino First" policy, which put the interests of the Filipino people above those of foreigners and of the ruling party. He was also unbeatable in Chess.

Carlos P Garcia was a Senator during the following period:

  • Commonwealth of the Philippines (1942 - 1946)
  • First Congress (1946 - 1949) - with Olegario B Clarin
  • Second Congress (1950 - 1953

---------------------

Carlos P. Garcia

Carlos P. Garcia was born on November 4, 1896 in Talibon, Bohol from a middle-class family that believed in giving children the best education it could afford. Garcia went through the Talibon Elementary School, Cebu High School, Siliman University for his preparatory law course, and Philippine Law School where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree.

In the law school, Garcia was holder of the Malcolm Scholarship Award for four consecutive years. He was among the topnotchers in the bar examination.

He taught law in Manila colleges, and then resigned to run for Congress in 1925. He was elected representative of the third district of Bohol and held it for six years; then elected provincial governor of Bohol for three successive terms.

He came to the notice of both President Quezon and Vice-President Osmeña, and was drafted as Nacionalista senatorial candidate in 1941. He won and he has been elected three times to the Senate until his election as Vice-President of the Philippines in 1953, leaving two years of his senatorial term unserved.

During the war years, Garcia was the leader of the resistance movement in Bohol, for which he received a citation from the late President Manuel L. Quezon of the Philippines.

While a senator, Garcia was minority floor leader from 1946 to 1951 and he did brilliant work as chairman of the Senate committee on foreign relations. He was also a member of the Philippine Rehabilitation and War Damage Commission to Washington in 1959. He also had been delegate to the Interparliamentary Union Conference in Dublin.

He was President of the Republic from 1957-1961.

President Garcia was the distinguished chairman of the historic Southeast Asia Treaty Organization which welded democratic South East Asia countries into a defensive military organization for mutual protection against communist aggression.

I heard that his parents were originally from Ilocandia. Is there truth to this? If it is, then Garcia was not a pure Bol-anon, only by birth, but actually an Ilokano.

HISTORY

The history of SULU begins with Makdum, a Muslim missionary, who arrived in SULU in 1380. He introduced the Islamic faith and settled in Tubig Indangan, Simunul. Tawi-tawi until his death.

In 1390, raja Bagunda landed at Buansa and extended the missionary work of Makdum. The Arabian scholar Abu Bakr arrived in 1450, married Bagunda’s daughter, and after Bagunda’s a death, He became sultan , thereby introducing the sultanate as a political system. Political districts were created in Parang, Pansulmlati, Gitung and Luuk, each headed by a Pang lima or political leader.

After Abu Bakr’s death, the sultanate system had already become well- established in Sulu. Before the coming of the Spaniards, the ethnic groups in Sulu â€" the Tausug, Samal, Yakan, and Bajau were in varying degrees united under the Sulu sultanate , considered the most centralized political system in the Philippines.

On 1578, an expedition sent by Gov. Francisco De Sande and headed by Capt. Rodriguez De Figueroa began the 300 years warfare between the Tausug and the Spanish authorities. In 1579, the Spanish government gave De Figueroa the role right to colonize Mindanao. In retaliation, the Muslims raided Visayan towns in Panay, Negros, and Cebu. These were repulsed by Spanish and Visayans forces. In the early 17th century , the largest alliance composed if the Maranao, Maguindanao, Tausug, other Muslim groups was formed by Sultan Kudarat of Maguindanao. Several expeditions sent by the Spanish authorities suffered defeat. In 1635, Capt. Juan De Chavez occupied Zamboanga and erected a part. In 1637, Gov. Gen. Hurtado De Corcuera personally led an expedition against Kudarat, and triumphed ever his forces at Lamitan and Ilain. On January 1638, De Corcuera with 80 vessels and 2000 soldiers, defeated the Tausug and occupied Jolo. A peace treaty was forged. The victory did not establish Spanish sovereignty over SULU , as the Tausug abrogated the treaty as soon as the Spaniards left in 1646.

In 1737, Sultan Alimud Den I entered into a ‘permanent’ peace treaty with Gov Gen F. Valdez Y tamon, and in 1746, befriended the Jesuits sent to Jolo by King Philip.

In 1893, amed succession controversies, Amirnul Kiram became sultan Jamalul Kiram II, the title being officially recognized by the Spanish authorities. In 1899, after the defeat of Spain in the Spanish American warm col. Luis Huerta, the last Governor of SULU, relinquished his garrison to the Americans (Orosa 1970 â€" 25 -30)

During the Philippines â€" American war, the Americans adopted a policy of non-interference in the Muslim areas, as spelled out in the bates agreement of 1899 signed by Brig. Gen. John Bates and Sultan Jamalul Kiram II of Jolo.

After the Philippines â€" American war , the Americans established direct rules ever the newly formed “Moro province, which consisted of five districts â€" Zamboanga, Lana, Cotabato, Davao and Sulu. Political, social, and economic changes were introduced. These included the creation of provincial and district institutions, the introduction of the public school system and American â€" inspired judicial system, the imposition of the Cedula or dead tax, the migration of Christians to Muslims lands encouraged by the colonial Government, and the abolition of slavery. These and other factors contributed to Muslim resistance that took 10 years “to pacify”. The department of Mindanao and Sulu replaced the more province on 15 December 1913.

Culture

Tausūgs are experienced sailors and are known for their colorful boats or vintas. They are also superb warriors and craftsmen. They are known for the Pangalay dance (also known as Daling-Daling in Sabah), in which female dancers wear artificial elongated fingernails made from brass or silver known as janggay, and perform motions based on the Vidhyadhari (Bahasa Sūg: Bidadali) of pre-Islamic Buddhist legend.
#6752
The Tausūg or Suluk people are an ethnic group of the Philippines and Malaysia. The term Tausūg was derived from two words tao and sūg (or suluk) meaning "people of the current", referring to their homelands in the Sulu Archipelago. Sūg and suluk both mean the same thing, with the former being the phonetic evolution in Sulu of the latter (the L being dropped and thus the two short U's merging into one long U). The Tausūg people in Sabah refer to themselves as Tausūg but refers to their race as Suluk as documented in official documents such as birth certificates in Sabah. The Tausūg are part of the wider political identity of Muslims of Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan known as the Moro ethnic group, who constitute the third largest ethnic group of Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan.

They originally had an independent state known as the Sulu Sultanate, which once exercised sovereignty over the present day provinces of Basilan, Palawan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and the eastern part of the Malaysian state of Sabah (formerly North Borneo).

The Tausūg presently populate the Filipino province of Sulu as a majority, and the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Palawan, Cebu and Manila as minorities. There is a large population of Filipino-Tausūgs in all parts of Sabah, who mainly work as construction laborers with a substantial number as skilled workers. The Tausūg workers tend to be confused with the more numerous Bajau workers in Sabah.

In Sabah, there are groups of Tausūg that had settled in the areas to the east of Sabah, from Kudat town to the north, to Semporna, to the south east, since the Sulu Sultanate once ruled over the eastern part of Sabah. However many had intermarried with other ethnic groups in Sabah, especially the Bajaus. Most prefer to be identified as Suluk ethnic group in their birth certificates, distinguished from their newly arrived Filipino counterparts which known as the Tausug. Migration fueled mainly from Sabah also created a substantial Suluk community in Greater Kuala Lumpur.
#6753
Let us discover more about our brothers from the south...
#6754
Who are the Tausug [Suluk] People?
#6756
In Malaysia, there are about 1.3 million Suluks who live in Sabah. The Suluks are the same as the Tausug people.

Tausug people are an ethnic group that makes up the population of Sabah, Malaysia.

I never knew about this until now during my research of this topic.

#6757
His stance is very dynamic.
#6758
Philippine Republic Act 5446 states:

The definiton of the baselines of the territorial sea of the Philippine
Archipelago as provided in this Act is without prejudice to the delineation of the baselines of the territorial sea
around the territory of Sabah, situated in North North
Borneo, over which the Republic of the Philippines has
acquired dominion and sovereignty.

#6759
Then in 1950, Congressman Diosadado Macapagal, together with Congressmen Lacson and Tolentino, sponsored a resolution calling the Philippine government to formally lodge a claim to Sabah.

Protracted studies were undertaken to support the claim.

These determined efforts led to the passing of a unanimous House resolution urging then President Diosdado Macapagal to legally reclaim Sabah.

As if to withdraw its recognition of Malaysia, and disregarding diplomatic sensitivities, the Philippines’ Republic Act 5446, took effect Sept 18, 1968 to regard Sabah as a territory “over which the Republic of the Philippines has acquired dominion and sovereignty”.

On May 24, 1974 the Manila government again recognised the sultanate when Datu Moh. Mahakuttah A Kiram, the eldest son of Sultan Moh. Esmail E. Kiram, was crowned in the public coronation as Sultan of Sulu.

This crowning was after the issuance of the Presidential Memorandum Order 427 by Marcos, then President of the Philippines, which states: “Whereas, the Government has always recognised the Sultanate of Sulu as the legitimate claimant to the historical territories of the Republic of Philippines.”

But he was redirected by a Jesuit friend to the priesthood at a seminary in the upscale Ateneo de Manila University, where he graduated summa cum laude, according to his theology professor, the Rev. He's gifted with great communications skills. A wonderful storyteller with a bent for music, Tagle speaks fluent Italian, English and Tagalog. He also has proficient French and can say Mass in Latin.

The Malaysian Government should have heeded the requests from Manila to practice restraint. By acting aggressively, Kuala Lumpur has opened Pandora's Box.

To my fellow Valencianhons,

Just wanted to show and extend a little love from my family to yours. I received new pictures from my Uncle Jun of some family events back home in Valencia. The two most important were the birthday celebration of my Lolo Ciano and the opening of some stores of our new business compound. hehehe! Thanks to the hard work of my Uncle, Engr. Jun Tan Salvo. Good Job Uncle Jun!  8)

The Chinese people, as a race, are not war-like people, but actually one that relishes peace, commerce, trade, and harmony. Throughout China's some 5,000 year existence as a state, their people have focused on harmony and trade. Preferring trade with other civilizations and internal peace, than war.

China's defense budget may be 10% of its GDP, but it pales in comparison to the defense budget of the United States.

OA ra bitaw. The ruling party must be desperate. :P

Considering the blunt force of the Malaysians, at least the Chinese were not as aggressive. They didn't shoot any Filipino fishermen or sink any of ships of the Philippine Navy.

The Malaysians are a bit too excessive.

Considering the Chinese government and Philippine government are at odds with each other over the scarborough shoal incident, one can be grateful that diplomacy won the day in regards to manila and beijing. Thank goodness China actually practices restraint, unlike the Malaysians.

china might as well send one-fourth of its population to establish residence at scarborough shoal.

Hahaha. They have already sent millions of their own throughout the shores of South East Asia. :P

Come to think of it, unsa kahay maneuvers sa China karon nga distracted ta sa Sabah?

They have, since December 2012, walled off Scarborough Shoal and have prevented any Filipinos from coming close. They have already intensified their patrol in the islets outside of Panatag Shoal.

#6789
The Chinese are smart, they will utilize this situation to their advantage. I'm sure their government will try to paint the Philippines as an "expansionist" threat.

Royal Malaysian Airforce's Mig-29 Squadron on prowl. These were most probably sent to bomb the Filipinos in Lahad Datu. They carry sidewinder missiles as well as cluster bomb munitions.

nagdibal akong ulo.  naa koy writing deadline, very urgent, ug nag-writer's block pa gyod ko, ambot na lang.

been bothered these last 2 weeks over a friend's domestic troubles.  cruel husband gyod iyaha uy.  gisayon-sayon ra man siyag ilis ug laing baye, hahay.  akoy gipahungawan tawon ani nga friend, and i'm treading carefully as i wait for her to get over the damnation of feelings of rejection.

so far, so good.  she's not self-destructive.  but no matter how i try, i can't help but be affected by her despair.  she's coming to see me tomorrow.  this early, naglabad na akong ulo.  there's really not much i can do to help her heal except to listen.

one thing with a broken heart; it will always be one's personal journey of pain and eventual redemption.  may we all have that strength to take the journey every step of the way, the good with the bad, on to the expected relief and salvation at the end of the road.

naa baya gyod diay mga tawo nga lami sunogon, purya.

I will recommend, isles, this following beautiful prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola:

O Christ Jesus,
when all is darkness
and we feel our weakness and helplessness,
give us the sense of Your presence,
Your love, and Your strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
in Your protecting love
and strengthening power,
so that nothing may frighten or worry us,
for, living close to You,
we shall see Your hand,
Your purpose, Your will through all things.
Amen.

I'll include your friend as well as you in my evening prayers tonight. May the Holy Spirit shower blessings and graces to you both. Continue to encourage and show compassion to your friend. Blessed is a friend who is there in hard , trying times. God Bless you, Isles.

For those who have not read the writings of His Holiness, Benedict XVI, I would liken it to a fresh spring breeze. He is an eloquent writer, and the message of God is so profound. He has given us so much , to the whole Church, through his writings. Generations , many unborn generations will read his writings and wonder in awe at his profound message. He answers each question I had in his three part series on Jesus Christ and the Importance of Doctrinal Truth.

He is a saint in our times. Truly. May God bless him always, all the days of his life.
