Then in 1950, Congressman Diosadado Macapagal, together with Congressmen Lacson and Tolentino, sponsored a resolution calling the Philippine government to formally lodge a claim to Sabah.

Protracted studies were undertaken to support the claim.

These determined efforts led to the passing of a unanimous House resolution urging then President Diosdado Macapagal to legally reclaim Sabah.

As if to withdraw its recognition of Malaysia, and disregarding diplomatic sensitivities, the Philippinesâ€™ Republic Act 5446, took effect Sept 18, 1968 to regard Sabah as a territory â€œover which the Republic of the Philippines has acquired dominion and sovereigntyâ€.

On May 24, 1974 the Manila government again recognised the sultanate when Datu Moh. Mahakuttah A Kiram, the eldest son of Sultan Moh. Esmail E. Kiram, was crowned in the public coronation as Sultan of Sulu.

This crowning was after the issuance of the Presidential Memorandum Order 427 by Marcos, then President of the Philippines, which states: â€œWhereas, the Government has always recognised the Sultanate of Sulu as the legitimate claimant to the historical territories of the Republic of Philippines.â€

Philippine Republic Act 5446 states:

The definiton of the baselines of the territorial sea of the Philippine
Archipelago as provided in this Act is without prejudice to the delineation of the baselines of the territorial sea
around the territory of Sabah, situated in North North
Borneo, over which the Republic of the Philippines has
acquired dominion and sovereignty.

In Malaysia, there are about 1.3 million Suluks who live in Sabah. The Suluks are the same as the Tausug people.

Tausug people are an ethnic group that makes up the population of Sabah, Malaysia.

I never knew about this until now during my research of this topic.

Aparri to Jolo! Di nata mangilog ug di atoa in the first place. Sabah is part of Borneo. Borneo or whoever claim Borner as its own... mao nay klarong tag-iya sa Sabah. Whatever vlaim the Sultanate of Sulu has is irrelevant and is only between tribal families or datus and lack the legality of a sovereign claim

I never thought of Sabah, for once, as part of Philippines. History tells we have Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. And not once did our teachers mentioned of Sabah as part of Mindanao! Toinks!

Sabah is the 2nd largest state in the Malaysian Federation. In addition, Sabah is home to a huge plantations as well as oil refineries and natural gas deposits. The Malaysian Armed Forces will not relinquish control of Malaysia without a fight.

Realistically speaking, Sabah cannot be reclaimed unless Malaysia relinquishes military control, or if the Philippines takes it by force. At the current situation, both parties are trying to solve this issue and maintain the status quo.

The Malaysian Armed Forces, however, are having a difficult time "wiping out" the Sulu Royal Army. Decades of peace in Malaysia have resulted in their army's inability to counter the guerilla warefare tactics of the Sulu Royal Army. It is also known that the MNLF have now sent hundreds of its battle-hardened forces to Sabah to reinforce the Sulu Royal Army.

I find it quite ironic how this situation has come to be. The MNLF as well as the Sulu Royal Army were trained by the Malaysian Armed Forces to combat the Philippine Government years prior. Now, the MNLF is now at war with the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Now Malaysia can taste and see the results of guerilla warefare. Malaysia as a nation has provided resources and support for muslim insurgents in Southern Thailand, in Indonesia and even in the Philippines. Malaysia is now tasting a little bit of karma.

They are now fighting people who they trained and encouraged to fight the Philippine Government.

Did you know that last week, the Malaysian Air Force sent 2 squadrons of their F/A-18 Fighters to bomb a known Sulu Royal Army camp in Lahad Datu. However, their lethal firepower backfired. The Sulu Royal Army had already dispersed , and the soldiers that were in the camp were actually Malaysian Army soldiers. Malaysia's Air Force had fired on their own soldiers , destroying an entire convoy of tanks, and armed personnel carriers as well as unknown number of Malaysian soldiers inside.

The Tausugs have now spread into Semporna, and three other neighbouring towns in Sabah. The Malaysian Navy and the Philippine Navy's blockade of the Sulu Sea have failed to cordon off the straits. Thousands of MNLF soldieres have already arrived into Sabah and have reinforced the Sulu Royal Army.

Malaysia has sent 7 Army Battalions to crush the Philippine Fighters. Malaysia has opened a Pandora's Box. I fear Sabah will be another war torn region.

There are 1.3 million Suluks (Tausugs) who live in Sabah. There is also an additional 800,000 Filipinos who live/work in Sabah. Demographically speaking, there are more Filipinos in Sabah than Malaysians. The Malaysian Army is also now targeting and assaulting Filipinos living in Sabah for fear of their relation to the Sulu Royal Army.

I hope and pray that the Malaysian Government allows the Philippine Government the right to provide the necessary aid to the Citizens of the Philippines.

The Philippines must also ensure that it does all it can to provide and protect for its citizens in the aforementioned area.
