History / A friendship best kept at a distance
August 11, 2015, 10:22:32 PM
T.S. Eliot & Groucho Marx

T.S. Eliot was a pioneer of the Modernist movement. He wrote plays, poems, and essays critiquing social and literary issues. He was educated at Harvard and Sorbonne and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. He was also a giant fan of the slapstick antics of the Marx Brothers, which is why he wrote to Groucho Marx in 1961, asking for a signed photograph.

Groucho was the king of gags, always with a witty comeback at the ready. However, his greatest shame was the lack of a formal education, so he was ecstatic to have such an erudite fan. He promptly wrote back to Eliot, starting what would be a three-year, long-distance friendship. The two of them became pen pals, writing to each other and praising each other’s work.

Neither man realized this was a friendship best kept at a distance. It ended abruptly once the two had their first face-to-face meeting in 1964. Marx wanted to show Eliot how educated he was by discussing his essays and quoting his poems, while Eliot wanted to talk about old Marx Brothers films. Neither one got what he wantedâ€"Groucho couldn’t remember the stuff Eliot wanted to know, while the author wasn’t really interested in hearing his own poetry recited back to him. They stopped communicating altogether shortly after that disastrous dinner. -- http://listverse.com/

All of the energy in the universe was created in the Big Bang, with some of that energy becoming mass. Stars convert mass back into energy, and that output is what the GAMA study examined in more than 200,000 galaxies across 21 wavelengths, from ultraviolet to far infrared, according to the European Southern Observatory.

“While most of the energy sloshing around in the universe arose in the aftermath of the Big Bang, additional energy is constantly being generated by stars as they fuse elements like hydrogen and helium together,” Driver said. “This new energy is either absorbed by dust as it travels through the host galaxy, or escapes into intergalactic space and travels until it hits something, such as another star, a planet, or, very occasionally, a telescope mirror.”

Driver's team at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Western Australia put together an oddly soothing video (above) explaining the project and the slow decline of the universe.

“Just as we all become less active in our old age, the same is happening to the universe, and it’s well past its prime,” Luke Davies, a member of the ICRAR research team, said in the video.

The universe itself won't die so much as slip into an eternal old age.

“It will just grow old forever, slowly converting less and less mass into energy as billions of years pass by," Davies said in the clip. "Until eventually it will become a cold, dark, and desolate place where all of the lights go out.”

Don't get too attached to the universe. It won't be around much longer.

The universe will long outlast Earth. However, in the cosmic sense, it is slowly dying -- something scientists have believed to be the case since the 1990s, but recently confirmed in a new study.

A team of international researchers measured the energy output across a large portion of space and found that it was only half of what it was a mere 2 billion years ago.

And that decline will continue. In the simplest terms, the universe is not only burning out... it's also fading away.

"The universe will decline from here on in, sliding gently into old age," Simon Driver, leader of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) project, said in a news release. "The universe has basically sat down on the sofa, pulled up a blanket and is about to nod off for an eternal doze."

Have you ever noticed a stranger giving you a nasty stare, despite the fact that you’ve done absolutely nothing wrong? In modern days, you would simply assume that the person was a jerk; in the olden times, there was a very real chance that you were being cursed.

Giving the evil eye was a strange procedure. It was usually performed by simply “looking at something wrong”â€"even if you did not mean to curse anyone. A critical gaze can bring bad health to people and even ruin buildings. It was a deadly curse, for anyone could lay one on you, and you’d have no solid idea as to who did it to you.

The people most susceptible to evil eye attacks were babies and children, due to the fact that they would be praised a lot. Praise was believed to draw the attention of the evil eye, so the best way to counteract the curse was to then spit in the child’s face. Beside making the child feel incredibly confused, it devalued the child as a whole, which would deter any efforts of the evil eye. -- http://listverse.com/

Hmm, history repeats itself, albeit in less royal circumstances...

Sunandha Kumariratana, the Queen of Thailand, drowned while her subjects watched because they were forbidden to touch her

Sunandha Kumariratana was the daughter of King Mongkut and Princess Consort Piam of Thailand. She was born in 1860 and was the first queen consort.

In 1880, when Kumariratana was only 19 years old, her boat capsized on the way to Bang Pa-In Royal Palace. She drowned despite the fact that there were many onlookers present that could have helped her. They didn't because they were not allowed to touch the queen. If they had, they could have been put to death. So ironically and tragically, they were not allowed to save her life. -- http://www.omgfacts.com/

He explained: “The Asian father took his wife and kids to the beach for picnic and fun.

“The kids were swimming in the beach when suddenly, the 20-year-old girl started drowning and screaming for help.

“Two rescue men were at the beach, and they rushed to help the girl.

“However, there was one obstacle which prevented them from reaching the girl and helping her.

“This obstacle was the belief of this Asian man who considered that if these men touched his daughter, then this would dishonour her.

“It cost him the life of his daughter.”

Revealing that the dad was a “tall and strong man”, Lt Burqibah said that there was a violent struggle, adding to Emirates 247: “He told them that he prefers his daughter being dead than being touched by a strange man.”

The fight delayed the rescue and the woman drowned.

Lt Burqibah said: “She died unfortunately, at a time when she had a chance to live, especially that the rescue men were so close to her to pull her out of the water.”

The dad was later prosecuted and sued by the authorities.

A dad of a 20-year-old woman seemingly allowed his daughter to drown because he did not want ‘strange’ rescuers touching her.

The shocking incident, that happened on a beach in Dubai, saw the woman get into trouble in the water before lifeguards attempted to rescue her.

However, they were apparently stopped by the woman’s dad, who grappled with them rather than let them touch his daughter.

Lt Col Ahmed Burqibah, the Deputy Director of Dubai’s Police Search and Rescue department, said that the unidentified dad believed the “strange” men touching his daughter during a rescue would “dishonour” her.

To celebrate the day, here are ten interesting facts about indigenous peoples:

370 million people in more than 70 countries identify themselves as Indigenous Peoples.

There are around 5000 different groups of Indigenous Peoples in the world.

There are over 100 uncontacted tribes in the world, according to Survival International.

One third of the world's 900 million extremely impoverished rural people are Indigenous Peoples.

They face discrimination in legal systems, as well as threats such as removal of their lands, physical attacks and marginalisation, according to Amnesty International.

In Rwandan Twa households, poor sanitation was seven times higher than that of the national population, according to the World Health Organisation.

One in every six languages spoken on the planet comes from New Guinea.

According to WHO, suicide rates among Inuit youth in Canada are among the highest in the world, around 11 times the national average.

Worldwide, Indigenous Peoples account for 5% of the population.

Traditional indigenous lands and territories contain around 80% of Earth's biodiversity, so indigenous peoples can play a crucial role in managing natural resources, according to IFAD.

The International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on 9 August every year, to highlight and address the problems faced by indigenous peoples regarding human rights, environment, education and health.

The theme for 2015 focuses on access to healthcare, which remains a major challenge. "On this International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, I call on the international community to ensure that they are not left behind. To create a better, more equitable future, let us commit to do more to improve the health and well-being of indigenous peoples," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement.

The binay is just too evil in taking advantage of the demise of the fallen SAF44, as if he sincerely cared for them but in reality just using them to further his political ambitions. Lets just see if the relatives will praise the binay or curse him for desecrating their memory, most likely they will go for the money.

I am betting the next move of Mr. Jejomar Binay is to gather families of these murdered SAF 44 and for photo op - he will again lambast the administration while handing out cash and other political propaganda to improve his mileage. If he take this road it will showcase the kind of character we can associate with scam artist unfit to be president of a country.

Binay’s staff brought the SAF 44 mural to the Cavite State University, where the Vice President delivered his “true” State of the Nation Address (Tsona) on Monday.

Binay spokesman Joel Salgado told reporters that the Office of the Vice President now hosts the mural after “someone higher up” ordered the PNPA to put it down.

Binay saluted the mural during and after his speech, where he repeatedly lambasted what he described as an inept Aquino administration.

The highlight of his Tsona was his roll call of the names of the slain police commandos at the end of his address.

Politicizing their heroism

Said Binay in his speech: “In Mamasapano, 44 SAF troopers laid down their lives while many were wounded. But even just for a short time, their heroism was not mentioned in the State of the Nation Address [of the President]. Even a thank you, there’s none. Good for the President’s hair stylist and fashion designer, they were part of the long list of people he thanked.”

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, the administration’s standard-bearer in the 2016 elections, had slammed Binay for politicizing the heroism of the SAF 44.

“For five years, [Binay] applauded the administration he’s been part of. Now this? But worst of all, he politicized the heroism of the SAF 44. This is not right,” Roxas said in a text message to reporters.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda has repeatedly slammed Binay’s camp for “dishing out lies” about the administration.

He dared Binay’s group to “bring it on,” saying that the Vice President and his allies were attacking Aquino because they could not respond to the allegations of corruption and ill-gotten wealth against him.

“We have yet to hear a response other than ‘it’s just politics,’” Lacierda said.

LGU Philippines / Binay claim on SAF 44 mural a lie
August 09, 2015, 12:19:58 PM
@inquirerdotnet
04:48 AM August 7th, 2015

Malacañang on Thursday assailed the camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay anew for allegedly dishing out another lieâ€"that the Palace was responsible for the removal of a mural of the police’s Special Action Force (SAF) 44 from the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) in Silang, Cavite.

Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma told reporters that there is no proof or truth to the allegation that the Office of the President had a hand in moving the mural even as he emphasized the need to “let the public know the truth.”

Binay’s office had issued a press release saying the Office of the President was behind the mural’s pullout from the PNPA, where it was initially unveiled.

“Chief Supt. Armand Ramolete, the PNPA director, had reported to Philippine Public Safety College president General [Ricardo] de Leon that the subject mural was pulled out from the PNPA by the owner of the Erehwon Center for the Arts which made the art piece,” Coloma said, after the owner had reportedly cited the absence of an appropriate space to store it.

Coloma, who also heads the Presidential Communications Operations Office, also disclosed that “a statue honoring the SAF 44 has been put up at the Camp Mariano Castañeda in Silang, Cavite.”

Bassos is seeking more than $227,000 for medical expenses and lost earnings and superannuation.

Situations like these should be handled in various stages. First and foremost all airlines should have a set guideline for this matter, to leave the situation to airport staff who might end up in hot water is just not right. At the same time the passenger who suffers from this condition should have decency to call the airline or travel agency to alert the airline of the circumstances (maybe even prior of purchasing the ticket).

If these steps are not followed the supervisor at the check-in should then be notified of the situation and trying to find an empty seat to ensure comfort and safety for all passengers. If there is no empty seat available and it’s not possible to upgrade an elite member, protocol as per the guidelines has to be followed and the passenger ultimately denied boarding.

Conclusion

As I stated above, these situations are problematic because all passengers are paying customers, entitled to a safe and comfortable transportation. On top of that some local jurisdictions who might consider obesity a disability protected under certain laws might limit in what way airlines can reglement extremely overweight passengers. In the worst case it could be seen as discrimination so it’s important that the airline is on solid ground here.

By ignoring the matter and pushing the responsibility to the crew (who really has very limited options) the airline is opening itself up to a lawsuit such as this. It can be seen as negligence not having a protocol in place to avoid such situations.

I’m not sure why a lawsuit takes 3-4 years to be heard in Australia and what a medical assessment four years after the incident is supposed to reveal. I hope the court awards him at least something, it’s the only way airlines will eventually change policies.
#6638
The matter opens up an old ‘can of worms’ so to speak because it is a matter of high controversy in what way airlines should be required to make very obese passengers purchase additional seats to ensure their own comfort as well as those of the paying passengers around them. It is the position of many (including myself) that passengers are entitled to the entire space belonging to the assigned seat and not be inconvenienced by someone spilling into it.

Etihad tried to have the claim thrown out and argued it was not unusual to have overweight passengers taking up too much space, or coughing passengers.

However Brisbane district court Judge Fleur Kingham refused to strike out the claim on Wednesday. Kingham said she wasn’t convinced Bassos had no chance of winning.

In the meanwhile Etihad went in the offensive according to a new Guardian article today:

“Etihad Airways will continue to oppose the action and now that Mr Bassos will finally face a medical assessment in December 2015, as directed by court, we believe that the matter will proceed to an early conclusion,” an Etihad Airways spokeswoman said on Friday.

Etihad Airways: Passenger Sues Airline Over Obese Seatmate
by Sebastian Powell - Jul 31, 2015

Another interesting aviation related lawsuit surfaces from Australia this week. A passenger sues Etihad over a back injury, sustained while having to contort his body due to his obese seatmate.

As per the claim, the crew refused to moved him after he complained that the passenger seated next to him was ‘spilling’ into his seat on a flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi back in 2011.

The Guardian (access here) reported yesterday that the passenger Mr. Bassos filed a lawsuit against Etihad Airlines at his local District Court in Queensland (Australia) asserting that he injured his back after sitting next to an obese man who coughed frequently, was salivating and that he [Basso] was forced to twist and contort his body for long periods during the flight to avoid contact with his neighboring passenger.

The article outlines further:

After five hours he asked to be moved but airline staff allegedly refused. Half an hour later, Bassos complained again and he was moved to a crew seat.

However, he had to return to his seat next to the man later for another hour, and again for the final 90 minutes of the flight for security reasons, according to court documents.

Bassos is claiming damages for personal injuries, saying that being forced to twist his body for such a long time to avoid contact with the other passenger gave him a back injury and exacerbated an existing back condition.
#6640
POSTED 8:37 AM, JULY 30, 2015, BY CNN

Obesity is already a big issue in aviation, now a court case in Australia could make it even bigger.

Abu Dhabi-based airline Etihad is being sued by a man who claimed that being seated in economy next to an overweight passenger during a flight from Dubai to Sydney left him with back injuries.

James Bassos says he was required to “contort and twist” his body to avoid contact with his neighbor, who coughed frequently and “expelled fluid from his mouth,” according to court papers.

“After repeated requests of cabin crew, Mr Bassos was given limited access to a crew seat but was still required to spend long stretches of time in a position which he claims caused a back injury and aggravation of an existing back condition,” the papers reveal.

‘No accident’

Eithad has tried to have the case, which relates to a flight in October 2011, dismissed.

It argues that it isn’t liable as any injuries sustained would not be the result of an accident.

The airline says it’s not unusual to be seated next to obese or coughing passengers.

But Brisbane district judge Fleur Kingham refused throw out the case and has ordered medical checks on Bassos.

Although the outcome is far from clear, any ruling against the airline could have further ramifications for obese passengers already being turned away by some carriers or required to book extra seats.

Business Insider By Jonathan Fisher

Death is an inescapable yet fascinating process, and the only ones who can explain that are the ones who deal with it on a daily basis.

Business Insider spoke with Dr. Judy Melinek, CEO of PathologyExpert Inc. and a practicing forensic pathologist in the San Francisco Bay Area, to find out what exactly happens when a person dies.

Melinek, who has performed over 2,500 autopsies in her career, says:

"The first thing that happens when you die is that your heart stops beating and blood flow ceases. Blood then pools in the parts of your body closest to the ground, a process called lividity. Because there is no more blood flow, oxygen-starved tissues stop all metabolic function. Your eyes cloud over, and your muscle fibers lock up in rigor mortis. Your body temperature goes down to match the ambient temperature.

Eventually, bacteria from the gut and upper respiratory tract enter your bloodstream and cause putrefaction, while your body's cellular enzymes digest its cells, a process called autolysis. All these processes take time and can be roughly relied upon to estimate the time of death, but not down to the minute as they portray on TV."

Gruesome â€" most definitely. Completely natural â€" yes.

It's all part of the circle of life â€" whether we like it or not â€" so we might as well fight on to live another day.

A disturbing video was uploaded to the Internet via Live Leak on August 5, which shows the last moments of a whale shark’s life. It’s trending because two fishermen in China are captured on tape butchering the enormous shark with a saw. According to a

According to an August 7 Daily Mail report, vendors at a fishing docking in China are seen using a crosscut saw to cut sections of the living shark to be sold on the meat market. Several dozen adults, including children, gather at the scene of the live butchering.

Some among them appear to take delight while others gasp at the sight of the shark struggling to breathe. And while it cannot make an audible noise, experts say the whale shark is clearly in unimaginable pain from being cut alive.

Perhaps, one of the most shocking parts of the video is the moment water and blood gush from the large, but majestic creature. This spontaneous action took place when the shark vendors cut into the animal’s stomach and large blood vessels. Needless to say, animal activists are livid over the barbaric act of animal cruelty and abuse.

Sison had previously issued a statement that Duterte is a presidential prospect who is more acceptable to the Left because he has an "open mind" on the issues behind their struggle.

Duterte, who admits publicly that he is ideologically left-leaning, told the Army generals and colonels who shared dinner table with him at a Davao City restaurant Wednesday night that the country should unite and address external problems.

Duterte's call on the communists to give up armed struggle and participate in the democratic processes to achieve change was received positively by the Armed Forces officers, many of whom have seen action against the communists.

Many of them have also lost foot soldiers and even young officers in the 40-year Communist insurgency which is considered as the "longest Communist revolution" in the world.

Duterte is known to have open lines with the NPA, which enabled him to secure the release of soldiers and policemen who were captured and held captive by the rebels.

The Davao City Mayor also communicates directly with fugitive Nur Misuari of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) led by Murad Ebrahim.

Recently, Duterte allowed a public mourning for one of the most wanted communist rebel leader who was killed by the military in an encounter, Leoncio Pitao, alias Kumander Parago, whom he considered a friend.

"We cannot continue killing fellow Filipinos. We really have to get our acts together and heal the wounds of this country," Duterte said.

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had a phone conversation with exiled Communist leader Jose Maria Sison Wednesday evening where he asked his former college professor to give up the armed struggle and in exchange he will run for president.

Sison called up Duterte who was then attending a dinner with top military officers in Davao Region.

In their conversation, Duterte asked Sison to abandon the "armed struggle" waged by the New People's Army (NPA) for over 40 years now and participate in democratic processes to achieve change in the country.

Former North Cotabato Governor Emmanuel Piñol who was with Duterte at that time said that the city mayor told Sison that "armed struggle as a means to achieve change is passé in the modern world we are living in today".

"Over 40 years of armed struggle and thousands of lives lost is too much to bear. In the modern world we live in today, you would look ridiculous carrying guns and hope to effect change in society through violence," Duterte told Sison.

"The armed struggle is simply misplaced idealism," he added.

Duterte said Sison was asking if the mayor have plans of going to Europe before the 2016 elections so they could discuss about his "presidential plans".

But the city mayor told the communist leader he has no travel plan to Europe and that the presidency is not being considered because of the difficult situation in the country today.

"The presidency is not an easy job. You have the secessionists in the Southern Philippines and you have the NPAs all over the country.

This dazzling visualization shows how everything in China is shrinking
Business Insider
By Linette Lopez

The Chinese economy is shrinking, and it's happening faster than anyone expected, not even the country's government.

As such, economists and investors around the world are working every day to paint a clear picture of what's going on with the second largest economy in the world. The data visualization below, from a recent Credit Suisse note, should help with that.

Right now President Xi Jinping is guiding China through a delicate transition from a country with an economy based on investment, to one based on domestic purchasing power and consumption.

The thing is, until investment and the cash it brought with it is drying up faster than the Chinese consumer powers up.

As a result, manufacturing, property development, and other key drivers of the economy are all slowing down. Indicators are flashing red.

English Dictionary / Re: Sweetbread
August 06, 2015, 06:04:21 PM
Sweetbreads or ris are culinary names for the thymus (also called throat, gullet, or neck sweetbread) or the pancreas (also called heart, stomach, or belly sweetbread), especially of the calf (ris de veau) and lamb (ris d'agneau), and, less commonly, of beef and pork. Various other glands used as food may also be called "sweetbreads," including the parotid gland ("cheek" or "ear" sweetbread), the sublingual glands ("tongue" sweetbreads or "throat bread"), and testicles (cf. Rocky Mountain oyster, prairie oyster, or lamb fries). The "heart" sweetbreads are more spherical in shape, and surrounded symmetrically by the "throat" sweetbreads, which are more cylindrical in shape.

One common preparation of sweetbreads involves soaking in salt water, then poaching in milk, after which the outer membrane is removed. Once dried and chilled, they are often breaded and fried. They are also used for stuffing or in pâtés. They are grilled in many Latin American cuisines, such as in the Argentine asado, and served in bread in Turkish cuisine. --Wiki

Sweetbread

Neither sweet nor bread.

Sweetbreads are the thymus or pancreas of some young animal, usually a calf.

(A prettier name, certainly, than "offal".)

(BANAT NEWS)

The International Business Times reports that the dog was a rare breed and the authorities said it was "hungry" and "scared." Police got on this immediately and traced the dog to its owner. The 21-year-old man said that the dog ran away from him and that he didn't do this to the dog.

Police weren't buying this, saying the owner's explanation was "not very plausible." According to the police investigators, the dog is suffering from arthritis and it is more than 10 years old. "It is difficult to imagine her running away," said a source close to the investigation.

The dog's owner was arrested and he will be facing a trial for animal cruelty. This crime carries some big penalties if the man is found guilty. He is facing up to $32,000 in fines and up to two years in prison.

Back to the folks on social media... if they had anything to say about this guy's punishment he would get the maximum sentence allowed by law. An online petition has gathered 135,000 signatures by Wednesday since it was first posted. They want the book thrown at this man if he is found guilty. It looks like the dog is a survivor! A post on a community Facebook page says it all:

""people were openly crying at the state of the poor lad." The post said: "He didn't get like that overnight, so someone left him to suffer appallingly before discarding him like an old shoe. Even though he was obviously in a lot of pain and hungry he was still very trusting to the people who were helping him."

Dog buried alive in France infuriates social media: Arthritis-riddled dog saved
http://www.examiner.com/

A dog that is more than 10-years-old and riddled with arthritis was buried alive with just his face showing when rescued by a man walking his dog. The owner is arrested and a petition on social media wants maximum sentence. YouTube screen shot/ Facebook

The fury on social media spiked a new high when learning that a 10-year-old arthritic-laced dog was buried alive with his face barely visible to the passerby who saved him. A man walking his own dog on a waste ground in France saw this dog and jumped into action.

The dog was "shocked" and dehydrated" as the man started to dig the animal out of the dirt. He had called the emergency services for help, but started to rescue the dog on his own before they got there. The authorities arrived and the dog was taken for treatment to a vet.

According to AFP on Yahoo News on August 5, the dog was covered in dirt, trapped in this vacant lot in Carrieres-sur-Seine, which is west of Paris, France. Once the rescue was done and the dog was in the hands of veterinarian clinic staff, the man, who had taken pictures of the dog, posted them on social network. This sparked fury across social network in France and now the story has gone global.

Along with posting the pictures, the man told the dog's story of how it was buried alive writing, "Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her." The person who did this to the dog took some time to complete this evil and horrendous task because the dog was surrounded by stones and its collar was attached to a sack of gravel so the dog couldn't break away or somehow work its way out of the ground.

Versailles (France) (AFP) - Photos of a dog buried alive up to its head in France sparked an outpouring of anger on social media Wednesday, and police said the owner was taken into custody.

The French mastiff was discovered and then rescued on Saturday by a man walking his own dog on waste ground in Carrieres-sur-Seine, west of Paris.

The man posted pictures on Facebook saying: "Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her."

A police source told AFP that the dog was surrounded by stones and her lead was attached to a sack of gravel to prevent her breaking free from the earth.

The man called the emergency services and began to free the animal. The dog, "shocked and dehydrated" according to the police source, was taken to a veterinary clinic nearby.

Police quickly traced the animal to its 21-year-old owner who was taken into custody. He denied burying the dog, saying that the animal had run away.

However, investigators said this was "not very plausible".

"The dog is more than 10 years old and suffers from arthritis. It's difficult to imagine her running away," said a source close to the investigation.

The owner will be put on trial for animal cruelty and could be sent to prison for two years and be forced to pay a fine of up to 30,000 euros ($32,600).

An online petition calling for the "maximum sentence for the owner" had received 135,000 signatures by Wednesday.

Science and Research / Disordered Hyperuniformity
August 05, 2015, 06:49:05 PM

When trying to decide whether a substance is a new state of matter, scientists look at the structure of the substance as well as its properties. In 2003, Salvatore Torquato and Frank H. Stillinger of Princeton University proposed a new state of matter known as disordered hyperuniformity. While that might seem like an oxymoron, the idea was that the new type of matter would seem disordered when viewed up close but hyperuniform and structured over a long range. Such matter would have the properties of both a crystal and a liquid. At first, this seemed to only occur in simple plasmas and our liquid hydrogen, but recently researchers have found a natural example in the unlikeliest of places: a chicken’s eye.

Chickens have five cones in their eyes. Four detect color and one detects light levels. However, unlike the human eye or the hexagonal eyes of insects, these cones seem to be dispersed at random with no real order. This occurs because the cones in a chicken’s eye have a exclusion zone around them that does not allow two cones of the same type to sit next to each other. Because of the exclusion zone and the shape of the cones, they are unable to form an ordered crystalline structure (like those we find in solids) but when all the cones are viewed as a whole, it turns out that they actually have a highly ordered pattern, as can be seen in these pictures from Princeton. Thus, we can describe the cones in a chicken’s eye as being a liquid when viewed up close and a solid when viewed from far away. This is different than the amorphous solids mentioned above in that a hyperuniform material will act like a liquid, while an amorphous solid will not.

Scientists are still researching this new state of matter, which may actually be more common than was originally thought. Right now, Princeton researchers are looking into using hyperuniform materials to create self-arranging structures and light detectors geared toward very specific wavelengths. -- http://listverse.com/

JERUSALEM â€"  An Israeli hospital spokeswoman says a teenage girl stabbed by an anti-gay extremist in last week's attack on Jerusalem's gay pride parade has died.

Hadar Elboim of Hadassah hospital said the 16-year-old succumbed to her wounds Sunday and that her organs will be donated.

The girl, identified as Shira Banki, was among six people wounded Thursday by an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man who had carried out a similar attack on a gay pride parade in 2005.

He had been released from prison just three weeks earlier and had angrily spoken out against the parade after his release.

Jerusalem, known for its rich religious history and tradition, holds a modest parade annually in contrast to the large parade in nearby liberal Tel Aviv, which drew over 100,000 people this year.

The two homes â€" one of which belonged to the Dawabsha family, and the other, which was empty at the time â€" were set on fire by unidentified assailants at around 2:00 a.m. According to some reports, the fire was caused by Molotov cocktails that were thrown into the house. Others claimed the home was doused with flammable material and set alight.

The parents woke up and tried to get their children out of the house, but were unable to save their youngest son. Local residents said four men were seen fleeing the scene in the direction of the nearby settlement of Ma’ale Efraim.

A large number of Israeli security forces were reportedly at the scene and investigating the attack. The Israel Defense Forces condemned the “terror attack,” with the military spokesman promising to find the perpetrators of the “very serious incident.”

“We’ve always feared a day would come when arson would take a life,” Zacharia Sadeh, of Rabbis for Human Rights, told Ynet news. “This is a terror attack against innocent people who were asleep in their home.”

He called on Israeli leaders and defense officials to “find the criminals and bring them to justice.

Family’s home set on fire near Nablus; Hebrew graffiti on walls calls for ‘Revenge'; IDF condemns ‘terror attack’

BY TIMES OF ISRAEL STAFF July 31, 2015, 5:52 am

A Palestinian infant was killed in the West Bank early Friday morning in an arson attack, apparently by Jewish extremists.

Two homes in the Palestinian village of Duma, south of Nablus, were set alight, and the Hebrew words “Revenge” and “Long live the king messiah” were spray-painted on their walls, alongside a Star of David.

Palestinian medical sources said the child, Ali Saad Dawabsha, was 18 months old.

The infant’s parents, as well as his 4-year-old brother, were all injured and evacuated to the hospital. They were said to be in moderate-to-serious condition, with burns on large parts of their bodies.
