Data collated by Save the Children showed Filipino men were 1.6m tall, one of the shortest in Southeast Asia, he said.

Men in Southeast Asia are on average 1.63m tall , with Singaporean and Thai males the tallest at about 1.71m, Parawan said.

The global average for men is 1.67m, he said.

International studies have showed the Philippines has the ninth largest proportion of stunted children, the group said.

India is the world’s worst affected nation.

Manila’s own surveys in 2014 showed one in 10 Filipino families lived in extreme poverty â€" defined as earning 41 pesos (RM3.7) or less a day -- said the charity.

One in four Filipino children sometimes skipped meals, and as many as 1.5 million sometimes went a whole day without a single meal, the group said.

“These figures are sub-Saharan Africa levels of malnutrition,” said Ned Olney, Save the Children’s country director, adding that little improvement has been seen in recent years.

He urged the government to implement measures to ensure children are well-fed, especially in the first 1,000 days after birth.

Failure to address malnutrition will lead to many physically and mentally impaired people, hurting economic growth, Olney warned. â€" AFP

Growing concern: Studies show that the Philippines has the ninth largest proportion of stunted children globally. - AFP

The assumption that people from the Philippines are genetically short is no longer true as new evidence shows that they are malnourished.

CHILDREN in the Philippines suffer from “sub-Saharan levels” of malnutrition that stunts growth in a people who have traditionally been considered short because of genetics, a campaign group said last week.

Although economic growth has surged in recent years, chronic malnutrition means the country has more stunted children than Ethiopia or the Republic of Congo, the Save the Children Fund said in its recent report.

“The assumption has always been that Filipinos are just genetically short but what we actually see now are generations of stunted and malnourished children,” said Amado Parawan, the group’s health and nutrition adviser.

About one in three children under five years of age are also stunted, said the charity.

“Sometimes, the families may hide such children out of shame because they cannot feed them,” added Parawan.

“Because “shortness” is considered a racial trait, it is not seen as a serious concern, but stunting is more than just being short, it impacts children’s future because it hinders physical and mental growth,” he said.

Momisa man gani na libre, labina tan-awon niya pobre intawon to tagtungod. Di pod na siya nawong og kwarta. Basin giabusaran nila.”

“The property belongs to the barangay. In fact I have in my possession the deed of sale executed by his eminence Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, when the barangay bought the 1,200 square meter lot from the church.”

And finding proof will be difficult, Perkins warned. It's difficult to measure creativity in the lab. Most tests involve giving participants an ordinary object and asking them to come up with as many uses for that object as they can. That's not really the same thing as laying out the theory of evolution or inventing the jet engine, Perkins said. (Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, also suffered several nervous breakdowns during his life.)

"Really creative people are rare," Perkins said. "It just seems that a lot of them are neurotic."

One concrete step toward proving the link could be to study medial prefrontal cortex activity in people with high levels of neuroticism, Perkins said. However, it might take a neurotic genius to come up with other ways forward.

"We just hope this will give some impetus to people who are cleverer than us to come up with some good tests," Perkins said.
#6342
Anxiety and genius

According to Perkins and his colleagues' hypothesis, the brains of neurotic people might have a particularly persistent "default mode network," which is the circuit in the brain that becomes activated when people are doing nothing in particular. The medial prefrontal cortex is part of that system. If neurotic people have trouble turning off this thought-generating network, it might make them more prone to overthinking, dwelling and otherwise mulling over problems â€" real and imagined.

This can be a problem because neurotic people also have oversensitive amygdalae. The tendency to become panicked over imagined problems can make neurotic people quite miserable, Perkins said.

On the other hand, neuroticism could have benefits, he said. "If you dwell on problems for a long time, when those problems are not in front of you … it seems quite obvious that you'll be more likely to come across a solution than one of those happy-go-lucky people who live their life in the moment," Perkins noted.

It's a tantalizing notion, but no one has yet done the experimental work that would prove that the same processes cause neurotic worrying and creative genius.
#6343
Self-generated thoughts

These "self-generated thoughts" can obviously make people miserable, Perkins said. In essence, people are imagining problems that don't exist. Studies show that neurotic people have sensitive amygdalae, the almond-shaped brain structures involved in processing fear and anxiety. So, neurotic people not only invent problems, but tend to become very stressed by them.

But self-generated thoughts are also linked to planning skills and the ability to delay gratification. Perkins realized that the brain's internal threat generator might have pros as well.

"Neurotic people feel sort of miserable spontaneously, and they also tend to be better at coming up with creative solutions for things," he said. Isaac Newton, for example, once wrote that he solved problems by chewing over them incessantly. "I keep the subject constantly before me," he said, "and wait till the first dawnings open slowly, by little and little, into a full and clear light."

Thus, the neurotic tendency to dwell on things might be the very root of creativity and problem solving, Perkins said.
#6344
Overthinking it

Neuroticism is a personality trait that lends itself to worry, anxiety and isolation. Highly neurotic people are more susceptible to mental illness than happy-go-lucky types; they're also worse at high-risk professions like military aviation or bomb disposal, which require coolness under pressure. On the other hand, neuroticism seems linked to creative pursuits. Studies have found, for example, that artists and other creative people score higher on tests of neuroticism than people who aren't in creative fields.

"This is something that bothered me for a long time," said Adam Perkins, a lecturer in the neurobiology of personality at King's College London. Perkins is the co-author of a new opinion piece published Aug. 27 in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences that lays out the possible links between neuroticism and creativity in the brain.

Perkins was listening to a lecture by Jonathan Smallwood, a psychologist and expert on daydreaming at the University of York in England, when Smallwood mentioned that people who report high levels of negative thoughts show lots of activation in a brain region called the medial prefrontal cortex, even when they're just resting in a brain scanner. This area, which sits behind the forehead, is involved in the appraisal of threat.

"It's quite a simple leap to think they've got a sort of internal threat generator in their heads," Perkins told Live Science. "They can be lying down in bed or sitting in an armchair in a perfectly neutral environment, and yet they're feeling as if they're under threat."

Sir Isaac Newton formulated the laws of gravity, built telescopes and delved into mathematical theories. He was also prone to bouts of depression and once suffered a mental breakdown.

In this sense, Newton was like many other creative, driven individuals. Charles Darwin, for example, struggled with nausea and gastrointestinal distress in response to stress, so much so that modern psychologists have suggested that he may have had a panic disorder. Winston Churchill referred to his dark moods as his "black dog," leading to speculation that he might have had episodes of depression.

Whatever the truth behind these prominent men's mental health, multiple studies have found a link between creativity and neuroticism â€" a tendency toward rumination and negative thinking. Now, British researchers have proposed a possible reason for the connection: Creativity and neuroticism could be two sides of the same coin.

TAIWAN, SOUTH KOREA TURN TO SILICON VALLEY

In Taiwan and South Korea, strong economic connections outside China will also help their major electronic firms, economists say. Taiwan’s high-tech hardware developers get many of their orders from Silicon Valley and sell the gear to western consumers.

If there is any economic sloth in Taiwan or South Korea, it will likely be viewed as a reflection of tech industry trends, such as flat computer sales and a waning appetite for tablets, rather than a giant knock-on effect.

Not that a China slowdown will help.

“They have built themselves up as strong tech hardware producers, so the slowdown in that sector has hurt their economies with the China slowdown only adding to the problems,” says Nitin Dialdas, chief investment officer with Mandarin Capital in Hong Kong.

The large Chinese domestic market this year is showing a preference for cheap, local-brand smartphones that cost about half the cost of an iPhone.

According to World Bank forecasts, China's GDP will grow 7.1 percent this year, down from 7.4 percent last year, the slowest pace in more than two decades. China says its trade with the rest of East Asia totaled about $1.4 trillion last year.

China’s slowing economy could also add more problems for the rest of Asia if weaker factory demand means orders are cut for things like Indonesia’s raw materials, or if cautious consumer spending means cuts on fruit from the Philippines or cars assembled in Thailand.

In that scenario, China-based exporters could feverishly push goods over the border â€" including to countries such as Vietnam that lack a strong private sector â€" to escape flagging demand at home. China’s weaker currency would also increase Chinese returns.

Businesses in Vietnam are bracing for Chinese materials and parts to flood their country. Local factories need the goods and exporters can save money by shipping across a border rather than across oceans.

“The softness in Chinese demand will negatively affect Asian economies via the trade channel, especially those highly relying on the Chinese market for goods and services exports, such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea,” says Ma Tieying, an Asia economist with DBS in Singapore.

Yet eventually China will start to buoy East Asia again, says Zhuang Juzhong, deputy chief economist with the Asian Development Bank. China performance had driven much of Southeast Asia, Japan, and South Korea until its economic growth topped out around 2011.

“[China's] rising wages will induce its firms to upgrade industries and gradually move up the value chains,” Mr. Zhuang says. “[It's] shift toward consumption and its growing middle class will also create greater demand for consumption goods.”

SOUTHEAST ASIA MAINTAINS ROBUST GROWTH

In the Philippines, investors sold shares briskly on the Manila exchange early last week after Chinese markets lost 11 percent over two days. Foreign investment banks often treat all Asian shares as risky assets that are ripe for selling when a big player like China posts losses.

But last week, those same investors noticed that the Southeast Asian economy â€" fed by call center jobs and a passion for consumer shopping â€" had reported 5.6 percent economic growth from April through June, says Jonathan Ravelas, chief market strategist with Banco de Oro UniBank in metro Manila.

“The local financial markets were slightly shaken but not stirred,” Mr. Ravelas says. “The recent release of the Philippine second quarter GDP data suggests that the Philippines is still one of the region’s sunniest economies.”

Vietnam's major stock exchange had rebounded by midweek as some investors were hoping for final approval of new rules that allow foreign financial institutions from Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, and Europe to own majority shares in locally listed companies.

“There will be more Vietnamese shares available in the stock universe, so more room to expand,” says Pham Luu Hung, associate investment advisory director with SSI Research in Hanoi.

Chinese share prices fell last week after a 30 percent selloff in June and July, leading to worldwide worry about a crisis.

After China devalued its currency for the first time in two decades last month, Hanoi responded on Aug. 19 with its own one percent devaluation.

Vietnam’s response is seen as putting more money in the pockets of exporters, who exchange US dollars earned overseas for cash at home. China had let its currency weaken 3.5 percent.

Officials in Hanoi, mindful of up-and-coming export-dependent rivals such as Cambodia and Myanmar, have already devalued the country's currency twice this year. The strategy of sequenced devaluation may get picked up and imitated around the Pacific rim, as Asian nations fight back against the weaker Chinese yuan renminbi.

Japan has already let its currency lose value this year with the same effect. The country's large electronic companies found they can make more money from exports to western countries by doing so. In April through June, corporate profits rose 30 percent.

Even if economic growth in the Middle Kingdom is slowing, Pacific nations are unworried. At least so far. Many have diversified their growth models and aren't wholly dependent on China.

By Ralph Jennings

As the world worries that China’s economic troubles will cause a wide-reaching meltdown, China closest Asian neighbors are not yet panicking.

Pacific-rim countries will surely be impacted by China’s four-year economic slowdown, which came into sharper focus in late August with a sudden stock market selloff. It has been axiomatic for years that problems in China would ripple and harm the neighborhood. But nations from Japan to Vietnam expect to weather problems in the region’s flagship economy, as each now relies on much more than China for prosperity.

Their diversified growth means none of them are panicking, at least not now, and some even see benefits. Some of these nations trade robustly with the West. Moreover, their stock exchanges and foreign exchange rates, two measures of vitality, also move independently of China.

Bible Study / Re: Divine Mercy
September 01, 2015, 12:26:46 PM
Our Gospel for today is really a continuation of the same Easter story we heard last Sunday.  It also teaches us something about Divine Mercy. Jesus appears before His disciples in the evening of that first Easter Sunday.  Jesus breaths on them, giving them the Holy Spirit and then commissions them to forgive sins.  The Church looks at this passage as being the point when Jesus established the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  This Sacrament is really a major part of understanding Divine Mercy.  It's really only through God's mercy that we are able to receive forgiveness through this Sacrament.  As I said before, we don't deserve forgiveness.  Even when we confess our sins, we are not always sorry for the right reasons.  For instance, we're sorry because we know what we did was wrong, but we are not necessarily sorry because we have hurt our relationship with God. And even if we are truly sorry for what we did, how can we possibly make up for what we did against God and what Jesus did for us by dying on the Cross?  Yet, Christ forgives us every time we come to the Sacrament.

The Gospel also tells us about St. Thomas.  He wasn't there on the first Sunday and he refuses to believe the others.  A week later he is there and Jesus comes again.  Now he is able to see and touch Jesus for himself.  Now he believes.  It is easy for any of us to fall into doubt like St. Thomas.  We question whether God can still love us after what we did.  We question whether He can forgive us for what we did.  Do not give in to that doubt, but trust in His mercy.  Divine Mercy is for all of us.  Let us give thanks for it.

Mercy is different.  We give mercy whether the person deserves it or not; whether the person has made amends in some way or not.  That is especially true when we look at Divine Mercy.  When God gives us mercy, I dare say we definitely do not deserve it.  Yet Jesus Christ, the Son of God, continues to offer it to us.

In the 1930's, a Polish nun named Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska began having visions of Our Lord.  He told her about Divine Mercy and asked her to be the apostle and secretary who would tell the world about this wonderful message of Divine Mercy.  Jesus asked her to have a painting done of how He was appearing before her.  That image is now known as the Divine Mercy image.  This famous image shows Jesus dressed in a white rob with his right hand raised in a blessing. From His heart are two rays of light; one red and the other pale.

At the bottom are inscribed the words, “Jesus I trust in you”.  The colors of the rays symbolize the blood and water that flowed from Christ's side at the Crucifixion.  It is at the Crucifixion that we see the greatest example of Divine Mercy.  Mercy flows from Christ's Sacred Heart, as it does in the image.  Our Lord also asked St. Faustina to spread the devotion of the Divine Mercy Chaplet and to work towards having the Second Sunday of Easter be named Divine Mercy Sunday.  She wasn't the first to talk about Divine Mercy; Catholics have been honoring the mercy that God has shown us for centuries before St. Faustina was even born.  The message that she spread, however, has helped Catholics around the world to be able to reflect better on what mercy really means.

My friend offered one such explanation that I thought was very good. She said she remembered a story about Napoleon Bonaparte.  The story goes that after one of his many successful battles, he had a young soldier in his army arrested for a crime and was going to put him to death for that crime.  The soldier’s mother came to the emperor and pleaded with him to spare her son’s life.  He replied that the young man had committed the crime twice and justice demanded that he be put to death.  The mother said, “But I’m not asking for justice.  I’m pleading for mercy.”  “He doesn’t deserve mercy” was Napoleon’s reply.  “Sir”, the mother cried, “it wouldn’t be mercy if he did deserve it.  Mercy is all I ask”.  With that, he agreed to spare the life of the son.  My friend explained that it’s called mercy when we don’t deserve it.  We show mercy to others even when whatever they did to us does not deserve mercy or forgiveness.

I’ve reflected on this quite a bit since then.  It is so easy to hold back our forgiveness to others when we are still in pain from whatever happened, or when they never offer an apology for what they did.  We can come up with all sorts of excuses for why the person who has sinned against us doesn’t deserve to be forgiven.  I think many of us were trained from a young age to expect an apology from the others before we forgive them.  Not only that, but we expect them to “mean it” when they say “I’m sorry”.  When I was growing up I remember it wasn’t always enough to say “I’m sorry”.  If there was any indication of insincerity from the penitent, there usually came the reply of “Yeah, but you don’t mean it!”  Now, I’m not saying that this is the way forgiveness is supposed to be. We shouldn’t be so stingy with our forgiveness, but we do tend to expect something from the other before we are willing to forgive them. We look at whether the person deserves our forgiveness.

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday, and so it seems most appropriate that we take some time to talk about what mercy means.  I was recently talking to a doctor-friend of mine and we were talking a little bit about Pope Francis’ recent announcement that the year 2016 will be declared the Year of Mercy.  In other words, our Holy Father wants us to use that year to reflect on things like what mercy is and what God’s mercy has done for us and to practice showing mercy to others.  My friend and I were talking about how this was such a wonderful thing, that we would have this Year of Mercy coming up.  In our conversation, she told me that her son had asked her a question: “What is the difference between mercy and forgiveness?”  It’s a very good question isn’t it?  We often use the words “mercy” and “forgiveness” as synonyms.  I know I interchange the two words quite a bit in my homilies.  Despite their similarity, there is a distinction that can be made between the two.

Our best hope of dealing with extremism is to challenge the doctrines manufactured by religious scholars, from the past and present. The distinguished history of critical thought in Islam must be brought back from the periphery to the centre. And if its spread is hindered in the Muslim heartlands, then it must be exported back from the West.

In Britain, for example, it should be an essential part of the curriculum whenever and wherever Islam is taught â€" including faith schools and seminaries such as the Darul Ulum in Birmingham â€" as well as in any comparative religion classes. There should be a proper system of certifying imams, who clearly need much more than a traditional education that simply perpetuates uncritical acceptance.

What's more, British Muslims need to create and defend the freedom to question and, if necessary, reject religious authorities of the past and present. And why can't we see this theme explored on television, instead of the usual programmes about terrorism and the hajj? If nothing else, a TV series on free thought in Islam would supply some material to Westerners, so that they could engage with Muslims in a discourse based on mutual respect.

Finally, let us be heard. No doubt many Muslims want to protest against jihad. But, at the very least, we should also be rallying against the Saudi hijacking of Islam. You may "be" Charlie, and much good may it do you. But we'll know progress has been made when â€" outside the mosque â€" instead of "Je suis un couteau", we see signs saying: "Je suis Raif."

History / Re: Islamic history is full of free thinkers
September 01, 2015, 12:19:32 PM
Luckily, though, not all. There are still some contemporary thinkers following in the footsteps of the classical intellectuals. The late Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, an Egyptian who died in July 2010, declared that sharia was "man-made" and that the Koran was deliberately manipulated by religious scholars to justify their unquestionable authority. For wanting a more humanistic and contemporary interpretation of the Koran, he was labelled an apostate, required to divorce his wife and hounded out of his country. Similarly, the 69-year-old Abdolkarim Soroush â€" who has argued that Islam cannot rely on the dogmatic certainties of the past and urgently requires rethinking â€" has been forced into exile from Iran.

Again, the great Syrian poet Adonis, 85, has been declared a heretic and imprisoned for his beliefs, simply because he wants to re-frame the whole notion of God in Islam. The orthodox, God, he says, is represented as the vengeful patriarch of an Arab tribe. He questions this characterisation of Allah as remote, perpetually angry and without mercy, ever ready to punish even the tiniest deviation from "correct belief" and unable to be depicted lest the gullible masses mistake the portrayal for the real thing. And in his works he seeks a human connection with a God who is always near and merciful.

Today, as in history, all attempts to rethink our understanding and relationship with God, to interrogate orthodox belief, to bring reason back to Islam, are shunned â€" not just by the fanatics but by the vast majority of Muslims. The manufactured articles of faith seem to have an unassailable hold on Muslim minds. And so the moderate free thinkers' legacy, so vital at this time of sectarian warfare within Islam, is swept collectively under the carpet of accepted, if artificial, doctrine.

This phenomenon is the central problem in all varieties of Islam. In the absence of reason and criticism, the heritage has become toxic. At best, it promotes intolerance and bigotry; at worse, it manifests itself as fanaticism and violent jihadism. And until more Muslims question it, they cannot claim that its manifestations have "nothing to do with Islam".

History / Re: Islamic history is full of free thinkers

The accomplished theologian Ibn al-Rawandi mocked religious scholars and the nonsense they peddled about a Paradise full of virgins. (Could it be pleasing to anyone but a rustic, he wondered.) His contemporary, the polymath and natural scientist Abu Bakr al-Razi, insisted that Islam without reason had no value. The renowned blind poet Abul "Ala" al-Ma'arri sought to correct "what established religion took for God's criteria".

Their contemporary, the scientist Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni, who is regarded by some as a free thinker not only of his age but across all ages, insisted that it was essential to question everything â€" from religion to philosophy â€" and to respect criticism, including of one's religion, in order to benefit from its arguments. And the 12th-century philosopher Ibn Rushd, who later had huge influence on European thought, argued that matters of belief should be decided only on the basis of reason and evidence â€" a position deemed so dangerous that his numerous books were banned, and Ibn Rushd himself was briefly banished.

From their different perspectives, these and numerous other free thinkers of Islamic history arrived at a common conclusion: state-sponsored Islam is full of edicts and rituals that are absurd and insulting to reason. Free thought was the only way to cut through this nonsense and take us closer to God.

So why don't we hear more about these great thinkers and questioners today? Because concentrated attempts have been made, and continue to be made, to stifle free thinking and wipe its record from Islam's history. The traditional curriculum, unchanged for centuries, in most madrassas, seminaries and "Islamic universities" is devoted solely to the works of "approved" imams and scholars, and even the minutest critical thought is ruthlessly expunged. (In Saudi Arabia and most Gulf states, for example, it is forbidden to teach the ideas and works of Ibn al-Rawandi, Ibn Rushd, and al-Biruni.) In recent years, Saudi Arabia's rulers have spent £70bn in attempts to suppress critical thought â€" funding mosques, madrassas, universities and tele-evangelicals â€" with the result that generations of Muslims around the world, including Britain, now imbibe the Wahhabi ideology.

History / Re: Islamic history is full of free thinkers

Four hundred years later, when power had shifted from Abbasid Baghdad to Mamaluk Cairo, religious scholars banned independent reasoning on issues of faith â€" or as the formula has it, "closed the gates of ijtihad". In doing so, they laid claim to have solved all the problems of humanity. In fact, they shut the door on the Enlightenment, which already-established Arab scholarship would do so much to kick-start.

And still it goes on, with recent attempts to suppress critical thought verging on the absurd. In September 2011, a Saudi cleric called for astronomy to be banned, and astronomers punished, because it encouraged scepticism about sharia. (This despite the fact that astronomy, regarded as an "original Muslim science", has a distinguished history in Islamic civilisation.) This month, a Saudi cleric issued a fatwa forbidding the building of snowmen because they represented human beings and are therefore forbidden by sharia law.

The essential message of these historic and contemporary decrees is clear: the self-appointed guardians of Islam must be revered not cross-examined. The rules handed down and conjured up today must be accepted, not interrogated. The pronouncements of imams and sheikhs, mullahs and ayatollahs â€" whether educated or semi-literate â€" are both the word and will of God.

But despite what these religious despots would have their followers think, in fact Islamic history is full of free thinkers who have stood up to such authoritarianism. During the 8th century CE, when sharia law was being shaped, the Persian writer and thinker Ibn al-Muqaffa declared that it had the potential of becoming a political tool in the hands of kings and clerics manipulating the rough and credulous. And during the 9th and 10th centuries, a host of writers, satirist and free thinkers joined him in denouncing dogmatism.

So where do these beliefs come from? From today's extremist leaders, of course. But also, historically, from caliphs and clerics who realised that religion could perform a very useful function: it could keep the masses in their place and ensure that power remained in the hands of a select few.

The prime example of this thought-control is the notion is that sharia law is divinely ordained and must be accepted in its totality without question. In fact, its ordinances were invented in the 9th century CE â€" about two centuries after the Prophet Mohamed's deathâ€" during the Abbasid rule of the Muslim Empire. The law of apostasy, for example, was formulated to discourage revolt against the imperial state.

As for state-sanctioned blasphemy laws â€" now regarded as sacrosanct in Pakistan, Egypt and other Muslim counties â€" they were actually first introduced by the colonial powers in the 19th century, to keep the peace between the different religious communities that they ruled. In Pakistan, for example, blasphemy became a crime in 1860, when the territory was still part of a greater India. Inherited after partition in 1947, in 1982 the statutes were expanded and their penalties made harsher by the military dictator Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq to bolster support from ultra-conservative religious parties. Now they are seen as divine revelation!

But tightening the screws has long been the way in the Muslim heartlands. For example, in a highly influential decree from the 10th century CE, the Abbasid caliph Abdul Qadir, denounced critical thought as "counter to Islam" and ordered his subjects to dissociate from philosophers and freethinkers, who were required "to repent", despite the fact that numerous verses in the Koran exhort believers to think, reflect and raise questions.

Islamic history is full of free thinkers - but recent attempts to suppress critical thought are verging on the absurd
ZIAUDDIN SARDAR
Wednesday 21 January 2015

The West's best hope of dealing with the rise of Islamic extremism is to challenge the doctrines manufactured by religious scholars past and present, argues Ziauddin Sardar

"This has nothing to do with Islam," say the imams. "These callous and fanatic murders have nothing to do with us," say the mullahs. "Islam means peace," say the worshippers. These disclaimers, and variations on them, have been repeated countless times by Muslim commentators since the Charlie Hebdo killings. They are designed to distance people from guilt by association with those who kill and maim in the name of Islam.

But what about the sentence recently handed down to the (mildly) liberal blogger Raif Badawi in the Islamic state of Saudi Arabia? Ten years in jail, a massive fine, 1,000 lashes over 20 weeks (currently suspended because the first 50 lashes have rendered him "medically unfit")? Does this have "nothing to do with Islam"? Does the hashtag "Je suis un couteau" â€" referring to this week's stabbing of 11 Israelis on a bus â€" have "nothing to do with Islam"? Not to mention the 10 Christians killed during Charlie protests in Niger last week, or the ongoing depredations of al-Qaeda, Isis, Boko Haram, the Taliban and the Laskar Jihad of Indonesia?

The psychotic followers of these organisations all think that they are Muslims, and their Islam is based on beliefs that millions who subscribe to Wahhabism, the Saudi version of the religion â€" and its kin, Salafism â€" accept as essential ingredients of their faith. For example, that sharia, or Islamic law, is divinely ordained and immutable; that apostates and blasphemers should be killed; that women should be shrouded and confined to four walls and that men are their guardians.

This is a widespread version of Islam, made more so by modern communications; increasingly gaining followers in Europe, it can be, and is, used to justify all manner of atrocities. Yet this is an Islam of manufactured dogma which relies on neither the Koran nor the example of the Prophet Mohamed.

Amilbangsa later traveled across Asia to study dance forms similar to Pangalay and then published a book in 1983 containing the first written dance instructions.

Joy Wadi, an ethnic Tausug civil engineer who has been studying Pangalay with her daughter at Amilbangsa's home studio, said she is happy that the dance is helping her home province of Sulu become known for something other than bloody conflict.

Predominantly Muslim Sulu is a base of al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf bandits notorious for bombings, kidnappings and beheadings.

"When people see a Muslim or a Tausug, only terrorism and conflict come to mind," Wadi said in an interview. "But no, we're a good people with a very rich cultural heritage." (AP)

She was fascinated that the dance style is believed to have spread from India to the southern Philippines ahead of the arrival of Islam and Christianity centuries ago. She said classic dance forms similar to Pangalay are still found in Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia.

Pangalay, originally a Sanskrit word meaning "temple dancing," means "gift offering" among Sulu villagers in the Philippines. It involves the peaceful swaying of the arms, hands and fingers in gestures resembling the movement of waves or animals. One version mimics a bird gliding as it swoops down to catch a fish at sea.

After being passed from one generation to another in Sulu and in nearby Tawi-Tawi province without any written guides, many of the original gestures started to be forgotten. Rural folk lost interest with the influx of modern entertainment.

In 1969, Amilbangsa began researching Pangalay, interviewing elderly villagers to codify the gestures, often by watching her own shadow on a wall as she danced in a candlelit room, according to Nanette Matilac, a Pangalay dancer and researcher.

Her years of research coincided with the flaring of a Muslim separatist rebellion in the south and the declaration of martial rule in the country by strongman Ferdinand Marcos in the 1970s. Public assemblies were banned at a time when she had to meet and transport groups of villagers to promote the dance.

Amilbangsa, 71, was one of the winners Monday, August 31, of the Ramon Magsaysay award, regarded as Asia's version of the Nobel Prize, for "her single-minded crusade in preserving the endangered artistic heritage of the southern Philippines."

The other winners were Sanjiv Chaturvedi, who exposed government corruption in India; Anshu Gupta, whose Indian volunteer group provides clothing to the poor and makes inexpensive sanitary pads for women; Kommaly Chanthavong, who helped revive Laos' ancient art of silk weaving and created livelihoods for poor villagers; and Kyaw Thu, a popular Myanmar actor whose group provides free funeral services for the poor.

The awardees each received a gold medallion and a $30,000 prize.

Amilbangsa, the daughter of a Catholic political family in Marikina City, married a Muslim schoolmate from a prominent clan and moved to southern Sulu province, where she first saw and became smitten by Pangalay at a wedding in 1969 on Jolo island.

A sister-in-law wondered why she was interested in an ethnic dance associated with rural folk but Amilbangsa, who loved culture and the arts, had made up her mind.

"I thought that this was so beautiful, it's so different," she said.

MANILA -- Amid the chimes of gongs, Ligaya Fernando Amilbangsa teaches a group of women and children the mystical moves of a centuries-old dance form she has struggled to save from oblivion in the Philippines' restive south.

Her dream is that the ethnic dance called Pangalay will continue as a living tradition, hopefully helping heal divisions in the poor Southeast Asian nation, instead of ending up like a decorative museum piece.

"We have to think of a national symbol that can unite all of us," Amilbangsa said in a recent interview.
