As predicted, the European Union will disintegrate, and only ten countries will remain as EU members. Bible prophesy scholars call these ten EU countries as the ten horns discussed in the Book of Daniel.

It's good that JJ's Dimsum Restaurant located along CPG Avenue near Metro Center offers free wi-fi access. I hope more restaurants in Bohol will offer free Internet connection without the festering minimum order policy.

“Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story,” the movie that almost did not make it to the 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival, emerged the runaway winner in the MMFF Awards Night held Dec. 28 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater at the Resorts World Manila.

The movie starring Jeorge “ER” Estregan (Laguna Governor ER Ejercito in real life) romped off with an impressive number of 11 awards, 12 if we count ER’s winning as Male Celebrity with the Sexiest Appeal, a special award.

However, ER and his fellow “Asiong Salonga” performers and supporters were disappointed when the lead actor failed to win the Best Actor award.

“Asiong Salonga,” which tells the story of Tondo’s Nicasio Salonga, dubbed the “Robinhood of Philippine Underworld” in the ’50s, won the coveted Best Picture and Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Awards, Best Festival Director (Gary dela Cruz), Best Supporting Actor (John Regala), Best Screenplay (Roi Iglesias and Rey Ventura), Best Cinematography (Carlo Mendoza), Best Production Design (Fritz Siloria, Mona Soriano and Ronaldo Cadapan), Best Theme Song (“La Paloma” by Ely Buendia), Best Musical Score (Jerry Lazaten), Best Sound Recording (Mike Idioma), and Best Editing (Jason Canapay and Ryan Orduna).

The other winners were Dingdong Dantes (Best Actor for “Segunda Mano”), Maricel Soriano (Best Actress for “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”), Eugene Domingo (Best Supporting Actress for “My Househusband”), “Enteng ng Ina Mo” (2nd Best Picture), “Shake, Rattle & Roll 13” (3rd Best Picture), “Shake, Rattle & Roll 13’s” “Rain, Rain Go Away” episode (Best Original Story by Chris Martinez and Marlon Rivera), Buboy Cariño (Best Child Performer. “Shake, Rattle & Roll 13”), “Carlo J. Caparas’ Ang Panday 2” (Best Visual Effects, Riot, Inc., and Best Float), Florencia Penero, Niccolo Medina, Jayvee Flores (Best Make-Up Artist, “Enteng ng Ina Mo”) and “My Househusband” (Gender Sensitivity Award).

“Asiong Salonga” is produced by Scenema Concept, Inc. and Viva Communications and also stars Carla Abellana, Phillip Salvador, Yul Servo, Baron Geisler, Perla Bautista, Robert Arevalo, Amay Bisaya and Dennis Padilla among others.

Help & Support / New Year Inspirational Quotes
December 31, 2011, 06:01:17 PM
Happy New Year, Everyone!

Here are some inspirational quotes for your New Year celebration.

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.
Benjamin Franklin

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.
G. K. Chesterton

The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months!
Edward Payson Powell

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.
Edith Lovejoy Pierce

It is difficult to live in the present, ridiculous to live in the future, and impossible to live in the past. Nothing is as far away as one minute ago.
Jim Bishop

You have done what you could â€" some blunders and absurdities have crept in. Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.
Emerson

One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this â€" To rise above the little things.
John Burroughs

If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.
Confucius

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

Showbiz & Celebrity / Kinse Libre by Slapshock
December 31, 2011, 04:07:25 PM
Audio Junkie
By PUNCH LIWANAG, Manila Bulletin
'Kinse Kalibre'
Slapshock
PolyEast Records

Surviving rock fads and quite possibly themselves, Slapshock is out with new album "Kinse Libre" in celebration of 15 years of blistering rock music.

You have to hand it to the men that make up Slapshock for sticking it out with one another for that long. Sure, perhaps lead throat Jamir Garcia, jumping jellybean of a bassist Lee Nadela, guitarist Lean Ansing and skinsman Chi Evora probably hated each others’ guts at one time or another, but it comes with the territory, especially when playing music that just drips with testosterone and natural aggression. Don’t they say familiarity breeds contempt? But to travel this far down the road, and perhaps remain as buddies, is just commendable. Maybe because the music is still getting better; in fact, “Kinse Kalibre” showcases a group that’s still reinvigorated any chance they get to play together.

by AFP - As revolution inflamed the Middle East in 2011, people power won its own small triumphs in Asia, with Myanmar startling observers by taking steps towards openness after decades of isolation.

In Southeast Asia, a surge in online activism galvanised citizens to make demands of their governments, while China and other authoritarian regimes watched their backs for any signs of Arab Spring-style revolts. ''There's a trend of people standing up to power,'' said Bridget Welsh, a political analyst from Singapore Management University. ''It's not about opposition parties but about people's empowerment.''

Ernest Bower of the Center for Strategic and International Studies labelled 2011 ''the year of the voter in the region'', writing in a report that ''governments... are scrambling to retain power by pursuing reform''.

These are not the seismic shifts of the Middle East, but analysts say smaller democratic gains are still worthy of note in countries where formidable power structures have held sway for decades. Among them is Singapore, long a model for states looking to mix wealth with muscular rule, where the ruling party vowed to undergo ''soul-searching'' after its share of the vote plunged to a record low of 60 percent in watershed polls.

The results were the worst in the party's 52 years of government as, despite odds stacked in its favor, voters' mood for change found an outlet on the web which bloomed with satire, polemic and unfettered campaigning.

In Malaysia, likewise ruled by a single party since independence, discontent which erupted in 2008 elections has seen unprecedented street rallies including one in July in which protesters faced mass arrests and tear gas. A public outcry over the heavy-handed tactics, and the prospect of fresh polls expected for next year, pushed Prime Minister Najib Razak into electoral reforms including several demanded by the rally's leaders.

Travel and Tours / Check-in Fee of AirAsia Abolished
December 31, 2011, 03:53:10 PM
by Manila Bulletin

AirAsia
is abolishing the counter check-in fees for all international flights throughout its route network. All bookings made on December 22 onwards will be exempted from the RM10 per passenger for counter check-in.

The counter check-in fee was introduced by AirAsia recently in September, where guests are charged RM10 per passenger for counter check-in instead of utilizing the free-of-charge self check-in options available via web, mobile or kiosks.

The check-in fee will remain for Malaysian domestic flights.

AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said: “AirAsia will no longer charge the RM10 counter check-in fees for all our guests departing on international flights. This move is part of our continuous effort to reduce the cost of traveling for all our guests, especially with the recent hike of passenger service charge for international travellers. With the abolishment of counter check-in fees for international destinations, guests can now go directly to the check-in counters for check-in. We will also continue to improve and innovate our check-in services”

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester has asked the Vatican to defrock a priest who is facing charges of possessing child pornography and stealing from his parish.

A spokesman for the diocese tells The Telegram & Gazette newspaper that Bishop Robert McManus has asked the Pope to defrock the Rev. Lowe Dongor, a priest of Filipino descent.

Diocese officials say they are seeking to laicize Dongor in the wake of a "clarification" last spring by Vatican officials child pornography possession is ground for removal from the priesthood.

Authorities say images of preteen girls were found on Dongor's computer during service. He also allegedly stole $40 to $60 from St. Joseph parish in Fitchburg on several occasions. He was released after pleading not guilty and suspended from ministry. It is believed he has fled to his native Philippines.

G-Xchange, Inc (GXI), the mobile commerce subsidiary of Globe Telecom, ends 2011 with around P4.5 billion worth of Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT) via its domestic cash pick-up service GCASH REMIT in over 9,000 barangays nationwide.

Paolo Baltao, president of GXI, said this amount benefits 700,000 households or 30% of the target 2.3-million CCT family beneficiaries in 2011.

As of August, approximately P9 billion cash grants were released by the government for distribution to beneficiaries nationwide.

Spearheaded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and state-owned Land Bank of the Philippines, the CCT program is a three-year-old poverty alleviation program that gives out cash assistance to the country’s poorest families in exchange for compliance on conditions such as sending their children to school, having infants immunized from diseases, and mothers visiting community health centers.

On the average, families complying with the conditions can get cash grants of P1,200-P1,400 monthly.

Last year, DSWD and Land Bank tapped GXI to pay out cash grants focusing on hard-to-reach areas. Cash transfers were made thru GCASH REMIT’s payout partners that include rural banks, cooperatives and Globe sub-dealers. - Manila Bulletin

The provincial office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Oriental has reiterated its warning against any business establishment found violating the price ceiling set by the national government for basic commodities.

Unless lifted, the price control of basic commodities shall remain in effect for not more than 60 days after President Benigno S. Aquino III last week declared a national state of calamity due to the devastation wrought by tropical storm "Sendong".

As such, prices of basic commodities are automatically frozen at their prevailing prices prior to the storm, said Angeline Gonzalez of the DTI provincial office.

These items include bread, sardines, processed milk, coffee, salt, and laundry soap. Prevailing prices at the local level were based on those in the supermarkets and wet markets, with a difference of a few centavos between them.

Price range of the following items, depending on the brand and where they are sold, are: sardines (155 grams) of three different brands (555, Family, Youngstown) between P11.80 to P12.50; condensed filled milk (Alaska and Milkmaid, 300ml), between P47.50 to P55.00; evaporated filled milk (Alaska and Alpine, 370 ml), P33.75 to P45.80; Angel filled milk (410 ml), P35.90 at the supermarket and P34.10 at the wet market; powdered filled milk (Alaska and Bear Brand, 150 g), P43.00 to P48.25; Nido full cream milk (160 g), P69.00 and P70.00; coffee (Blend 45 and Great Taste granules, 150 g), P15.50 to P18.75; Nescafe (50g), P37.00 at the wet market and P39.00 at the supermarket; laundry/detergent soap (Mr. Clean, 420 g), P15.90 and P16.00; (Perla, 400g), P42.60 and P44.00; (Surf Bar Kalamansi, 445 g), P18.00 and P18.20; loaf bread 410 g at P45.00; pandesal 25g, P38.50; iodized salt (Fidel 250g), P4.80 and P5.45; rock salt, 1kg at P6.50 at both supermarket and wet market.

The progressive group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) has lauded the arrest of the suspected killer of Italian priest Fr. Fausto Tentorio by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Bayan secretary general Franchie Buhayan said the arrest of Jimmy Ato “is a positive development” in so far as the murder of Fr. Tentorio is concerned.

Buhayan hoped that the arrest of Ato would also lead to the arrest of the mastermind in the killing of Fr. Tentorio.

Ato was arrested by NBI agents in Region 12 after a brief gunfight in Arakan, North Cotabato Thursday, December 29.

The NBI raiding team swooped down at Ato’s residence in Sitio Mahiwakwak, Barangay Kolaman Valley.

Ato was tagged by witnesses as the man who shot Fr. Tentorio inside his church compound in Arakan Valley last October 17.

Jimmy’s brother, Robert, was also arrested during the operation.

The Cebu City Fire Department has raised the damage estimates in the fire that hit a mall in Cebu City from P20 million to P55 million.

But fire officials the amount is only an estimate and is not binding on the findings for actual damage by property insurance experts.

Fire officials said the fire, which hit the Gaisano Capital South Mall at the corner of Leon Kilat and Colon streets shortly after midnight Friday, was completely put out at 4:11 a.m. Wednesday.

SFP3 Fortunato Bucio of the City Fire Department said City Fire Marshall Anderson Comar made the declaration after inspecting the shopping mall.

Bucio said fires that cause damage exceeding P30 million will be investigated by the regional or provincial offices of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 7.

Eric Labrada, Gaisano Capital South mall liaison officer said work on the removal of damaged parts of the building has resumed.

The Cebu City Office of the Building Official (OBO) recommended the removal of parts of the mall that have been damaged by fire, but the contractor of Gaisano Capital South stopped work on the mall building because its crane was damaged during the rain. - PNA

The Filipino trait of sharing and caring known as the “bayanihan” spirit continues to draw support from local government units (LGUs) and private groups in the Calabarzon region comprising Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces to aid victims and survivors of storm “Sendong” that severely devastated residential and commercial centers in Northern Mindanao.

Local government units here admitted that they too have once experienced the brunt and fury unleashed by past typhoons and disasters that wrought havoc and claimed lives in the Southern Tagalog region. And in times like these, “dapat lang magtulungan sa panahon ng kalamidad”, a Cavite official remarked.

Cavite had its share of calamities this year when heavy rains and strong winds of typhoon "Pedring" three months ago caused the storm surge and flash floods that inundated its coastal and low-lying towns.

Sending its financial assistance and assorted stuffs to the ravaged areas, the Cavite Communications Network, an organization of Cavite local government information and public affairs officers led by its president Khei Sanchez, has assisted and mobilized the cash and in-kind donations.

Ruel Francisco, adviser of the Cavite communications group and Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Cavite Information Center manager, said the gesture is heartwarming as cash and assistance poured in from Cavite towns such as Imus, Rosario and a host of other civic organizations, which had also experienced and overcome disasters.

Laguna, hardly hit by typhoons "Milenyo", "Ondoy", "Peping’ and "Santi," also poured in donations from its civic-spirited groups, religious organizations and firms. Cash and donations in kind such as assorted medicines from pharmaceutical firms and locators in the province’s economic zones and industrial parks were sent in directly to agencies involved in relief and rehabilitation works.

Albert Aquino, the president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) here, has challenged all chairpersons in flood-affected barangays to exercise their political will in preventing residents from rebuilding their houses near river banks.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria had earlier made a pronouncement that he would strictly disallow illegal structures near the riverbank.

He even challenged the barangay officials to monitor and strictly prohibit informal settlers to occupy the areas.

Aquino said some of the barangay officials admitted being hesitant in implementing the order considering that some of the settlers are also their relatives and close friends. He admitted that there are factors that will have to be considered as majority of the affected families have been residing in the area for several years now.

He is anticipating strong resistance from the residents especially that majority of the affected families have asked that they will not be transferred to a relocation site far from their source of livelihood.

Aquino said the barangay officials will have to exercise their political will to implement the best solution for the safety and security of the communities.

If the need arises, the barangay official can ask the assistance of Task Force SAGARR and the city government to help in implementing the law against illegal settlers.

More than 3,000 families in Dumaguete City alone have lost their homes and belongings and were displaced after the flood brought about by tropical storm Sendong. - PNA

Philippine Daily News / Davao Del Norte Hit by Flood
December 30, 2011, 08:11:53 AM
After three days of rains that caused the overflowing of three rivers in this province, the flood water has finally subsided.

Some 2,470 families were affected by the floods in five towns and a city.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management (PDRRM) Division under the Governor's Office reported neither casualty nor damage to public infrastructure.

The catastrophe has recorded 2,470 families evacuated from the seven towns and one city, 41 percent of which came from Sto. Tomas; 15 percent from Kapalong; 22 percent from Carmen, 0.8 percent from Asuncion, 1.6 percent from New Corella, and 18 percent from Tagum City.

Except for Sto. Tomas where P4.6 million worth of damaged crops was declared, no aggregate report as of yet is released by concerned agencies.

After the rescue operations, the PDRRM had the whole day deploying relief goods to heavily affected areas.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Arlene Semblante immediately responded to the request of two local government units for food augmentation. A total of 1,000 packs of assorted goods was distributed to Kapalong, while another 1,500 packs are delivered to Carmen.

OIC Governor Victorio R. Suaybaguio, Jr., and Carmen Mayor Marcelino Perandos personally supervised the relief operations. While the rest of the province is flood-free already, the water in Carmen has not yet fully subsided, being the catch basin of all the flood waters from the hinterlands. - source: PNA

The Supreme Court (SC) has ruled that some 88 workers, who were sacked by a Cebu City hospital for staging a series of strikes 15 years ago, shall be paid separation pay because there was no proof they did anything illegal.

The SC partly granted the petition of the terminated employees of Visayas Community Medical Center (VCMC) in Cebu City and ordered the hospital management to pay them one month’s salary for every year of service and attorney’s fees amounting to P50,000.

”Since there is no clear proof those union members actually participated in the commission of illegal acts during the strike, they are not deemed to have lost their employment status as a consequence of a declaration of illegality of the strike,” read the decision that Associate Justice Martin Villarama Jr. penned for the SC’s First Division.

In April 1996, the VCMC terminated the services of about 100 of its rank-and-file employees for participating in the strike and picket.

The dismissed workers had been demanding for the hospital management to resume negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

The National Federation of Labor (NFL) said it was exclusively representing rank-and-file employees of VCMC, formerly known as the Metro Cebu Community Hospital Inc. (MCCH).

Another local union group, Nagkahiusang Mamumuo sa MCCH, led by Perla Nava, also claimed to be the official bargaining representative of the VCMC employees.

The Department of Labor and Employment 7 later issued a certification stating that Nava’s union group is not a registered labor organization.

On March 30, 1996, the VCMC sent termination letters to union leaders and other members who participated in the strike and picket.

On April 8, 1996, the hospital also issued a cease-and-desist order to the rest of the striking employees, stressing that the activities spearheaded by the Nava group were illegal.

Philippine Metrobank opened a new branch in the eastern Chinese city of Changzhou in Jiangsu province on Wednesday.

The bank will mainly offer financial services for more than 68,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Changzhou, which account for almost 96 percent of the city's total of privately-owned businesses.

"We choose Changzhou because the city has a broad market and a large number of high-quality clients," said Arthur Ty, board chairman of Metrobank (China) Co. Ltd.

"We will offer excellent financial services for them in light of international standards," he said.

On July 1, the China Banking Regulatory Commission, the nation's banking regulator, officially approved Metrobank (China)'s application to establish a new branch in Changzhou, which is also the city's first foreign bank.

Metrobank (China), headquartered in Jiangsu provincial capital of Nanjing, is the first wholly-owned foreign corporate bank in Jiangsu. It was launched in April last year and specializes in providing lending services for SMEs.

It currently has one branch in Nanjing and two in Shanghai.

The bank also plans to open a branch in Quanzhou in east China's Fujian province in 2012.
