Saint Simeon Stylites or Symeon the Stylite (Arabic: Ù...ار سÙ...عان اÙ,,عÙ...ودي‎ mār semʕān l-Ê•amÅ«dÄ«; Greek: ἍγιοÏ, ΣÏ...μεὼν ΣÏ,,Ï...λίÏ,,ηÏ, Hagios Symeon Stylites) (c. 390 â€" 2 September 459) was a Christian ascetic saint who achieved fame because he lived for 37 years on a small platform on top of a pillar near Aleppo in Syria. Several other stylites later followed his model (the Greek word style means pillar). He is known formally as Saint Simeon Stylites the Elder to distinguish him from Simeon Stylites the Younger and Simeon Stylites III.

Hungarian discrimination against Roma

Endemic discrimination against Roma appears to be growing, even as Hungary is transforming itself. Attacks on Roma, open discrimination and abuse by government officials exist, and appear to be part of a broad social pattern of discrimination and marginalization which seems likely to continue in Hungary well into the foreseeable future. There is evidence that this discrimination increases at times of economic hardship.

Whereas almost half the Hungarian secondary school students enroll in vocational secondary schools or comprehensive grammar schools, which provide better chances, only one in five Romani children does so. Moreover, the drop-out rate in secondary schools is significant. The Roma struggle to succeed in Hungary's educational system. Only 61% of Hungarian Roma aged 15 and above have completed primary education, and just 13% have completed secondary education.

This may be caused in part by the original culture of Romani people, which they carried with them from India, and which was reinforced during their centuries of nomadic existence; they could ignore or get around many of the laws of the nations through which they traveled. Even today, having been largely settled for much of the twentieth century, they have not managed to fully integrate.

Much of the Romani population are quite poor. They are not provided with fair and equal access to educational resources, resulting in high unemployment, and the perpetual cycle of poverty that keeps them from social mobility. Currently, around 90% of Romani children complete primary education. A research of sample schools however suggests that the drop-out rate among Roma is still almost twice as high as among non-Roma.

The share of Romani students entering secondary education has increased greatly, with the percentage of Romani children not pursuing any secondary education dropping from 49% to 15% between 1994 and 1999. But that increase is almost exclusively due to increased enrollment in the lowest levels of education, which provide only limited chances for employment.

During World War II, 28,000 Roma were killed in Hungary.

Tension is rising in a small Hungarian town over threats by a far-right group to tackle crime it alleges is being committed by a Roma minority, as the BBC's Nick Thorpe reports.

It is cold in Balint Bernath's kitchen, but the silverware radiates a glow of success unusual in Roma homes. There is a row of championship cups, won by Mr Bernath's stepson - a 19-year-old boxer.

A tall, pale-faced youth stares from a photograph, his head in protective gear, his gloves almost touching the camera.

The next big fight is in June, Mr Bernath says, in Germany. He is out there now, training.

Mr Bernath sees the question in my eyes - his son does not look very Roma.

"We are six brothers and sisters," he explains slowly to make sure I understand, "and five of us have married Hungarians."

That is shorthand for non-Roma.

Unemployment is huge and the Roma feel humiliated

How does he feel about the fact that his town has been picked by the Hungarian far-right as the next place to impose law and order on his allegedly unruly people?

They should neither kindle the fires, he says, nor pour oil on the flames. If they do come, he will organise a counter-demonstration. Contingency plans are already in place.

"Relations with the police are good," says Mr Bernath, the deputy leader of the Roma at county level. But unemployment is huge and the Roma feel humiliated.

Work for the local council, like street-sweeping and grass-cutting, has been halved to just four hours a day - for those lucky enough to get it.

And now the council has made welfare payments dependent on keeping your house and yard clean.

Officials come poking around, checking the toilets and bathrooms, he says.

One of his neighbours lost his unemployment money because they found dog excrement in the yard, he adds.

An order of US Catholic priests has agreed to pay $166.1m (£103.3m) to hundreds of Native Americans sexually abused by priests at its schools.

The former students at Jesuit schools in five states of the north-western US said they were abused from the 1940s through the 1990s.

Under a settlement, the Society of Jesus, Oregon Province, will also apologise to the victims.

The order had argued paying out abuse claims would cause it to go bankrupt.

"It's a day of reckoning and justice," Clarita Vargas, who said she and two sisters were abused by a priest at a Jesuit-run school for Native American children in the state of Washington, told the Associated Press.

"My spirit was wounded, and this makes it feel better."

The province ran schools in the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Most of the alleged victims were Native American. Much of the alleged abuse occurred on Native reservations and in remote villages, where the order was accused of dumping problem priests.

"No amount of money can bring back a lost childhood, a destroyed culture or a shattered faith," lawyer Blaine Tamaki, who represented about 90 victims in the case, said in a statement.

The pay-out is one of the largest to date in a series of sex abuse scandals involving the Catholic Church.

Fred the baboon has been targeting cars in pursuit of food in Cape Town

A baboon known for raiding cars and attacking tourists in Cape Town has been captured and will be put down, South African officials say.

They say they took the "difficult decision" to kill the baboon, named Fred, after he became more aggressive.

In 2010, the monkey attacked and injured three people as it searched for food in the city.

City officials blamed Fred's violence on "misguided efforts" by tourists to try to befriend and feed the animal.

"The decision to have him (Fred) euthanised was not taken lightly and not without extensive discussions between all role-players involved," Cape Town's Baboon Operational Group said in a statement.

"This baboon's aggression levels had recently escalated to the point where the safety of tourists, motorists and other travellers along the road past Smitswinkel Bay was being threatened," it added.

There are some 400 baboons roaming Cape Town's outskirts, particularly the popular scenic route to the Cape of Good Hope.

Baboons are a protected species in South Africa but their aggressive pursuit of food has led to conflicts with residents and complaints from tourists.

Two Nickels and Five Pennies

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" "Fifty cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it. "How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he inquired. Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient. "Thirty-five cents," she said brusquely. The little boy again counted the coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed. When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies - her tip.

Inspiration & Hope / Old Age Is A Gift
March 26, 2011, 06:37:05 PM

Old age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body - the wrinkles, the baggy eyes and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don't agonize over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avantgarde on my patio. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read until 4:00 am and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50s & 60s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the bikini set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten and I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. I can say "no" and mean it. I can say "yes" and mean it. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day.

March 26, 2011, 06:07:56 PM
A sinkhole, also known as a sink, shake hole, swallow hole, swallet, doline or cenote, is a natural depression or hole in the Earth's surface caused by karst processes â€" the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffusion processes for example in sandstone. Sinkholes may vary in size from 1 to 600 meters (3.3 to 2,000 ft) both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide. The different terms for sinkholes are often used interchangeably.

Poems and Poets / Rain
March 26, 2011, 05:32:49 PM
I opened my eyes
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.

I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can't do a handstand--
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said--
I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.

History / Project Acoustic Kitty
March 26, 2011, 04:05:12 PM

Acoustic Kitty was a CIA project initiated by the Directorate of Science & Technology in the 1960’s. It attempted to use cats in spy missions, particularly to bug secret conversations. It involved inserting a microphone and transmitter with battery to the body of the cat, and wiring an antenna to its tail. The expenses used for the surgery and training were said to amount to 20 million dollars. However, when the project went on a trial run (a trial mission where the cat was assigned to listen on two men in a park in Washington, D.C.), the project came to a halt when the test cat was ran over by a taxi and killed. Due to the incident, not mentioning the various cons of the project, Acoustic Kitty was declared a failure.

Church rallies faithful to unite in protection of life
By Evelyn Macairan (The Philippine Star) Updated March 26, 2011 12:00 AM

Thousands of Catholics attend a Mass against the Reproductive Health
bill at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila yesterday. Jonjon Vicencio

MANILA, Philippines -  As the Catholic Church continued to wage battle against the passage of the Reproductive Health (RH) bill, Pope Benedict XVI yesterday called on the Filipino faithful to support the campaign for protection of life.

The Pope’s message was contained in a letter sent by the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. It was read during yesterday evening’s prayer rally attended by an estimated 40,000 supporters at the Quirino Grandstand.

“I again encourage you and all who value the human person to be firm in your commitment to honor God and, by doing so, to manifest deep love for life and for its protection at this time,” said the papal letter read by Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo.

Cardinal Bertone said Filipino society is again going through a difficult period in defending life.

But he gave assurance that the “Church is not indifferent in such moments, because she believes that life is sacred, a gift from God who calls man to cooperate with Him, aided by a deep sense of responsibility for his action.”

He said the Filipino bishops discussed the attack against life when they went to the Vatican during the Ad Limina last Nov. 29, 2010.

Bertone said they were “unanimous in demonstrating their sensitivity to the attacks being made upon life and upon the family.”

Bertone said the Pope had recommended the defense of these values, which remain vital to the whole of Filipino society.

Pope Benedict earlier commended the Filipino Catholic clergy for its pro-life role.

In his homily, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales reminded the people that marriage should be treated as something holy.

Rosales led the thousands of faithful in the prayer rally with around 600 priests taking part in the ceremony “Filipinos! Unite under God for Life.”

Also present were Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Rep. Amado Bagatsing, El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde and his son, Buhay party-list Rep. Michael Velarde.

The Mass coincided with the Feast of the Annunciation and Day of the Unborn. Peachy Yamsuan, of the archdiocese of Manila, said there was no specific color for the occasion. She said participants simply brought with them yellow, blue and white balloons.

“The only thing we requested was that they bring candles, food and trash bags. While the Mass was ongoing, there was a slight commotion at the back of the stage when an orange colored cat jumped on a person, who in surprise squealed,” she said.

Cardinal Rosales spoke out against the RH bill pending approval at the House of Representatives.

“Having sex is sacred because it is connected to life that came from God. (Using) condom is not a game that should be taught to children so they would not be infected with diseases. Why should we teach these games to these children?” he asked.

Rosales said elders should teach their children the importance of life, the holiness of self-restraint, discipline and respect.

“Now what they are teaching the children is to use condom and play. This is how they make life cheap,” Rosales said.

Instead of misinforming the youth, the children should be taught about the purity of conscience, cleanliness of heart, discipline and self-restraint, he said.

“Instead of teaching about the RH bill, that when it becomes a law those who would (violate) it may be asked to pay fines or face imprisonment. They would punish those who follow their conscience and their faith. This is not the Philippines we know …this is not the Philippines that we love and for which our heroes sacrificed their lives,” Rosales said.

With the RH bill yet to be taken up for plenary debates at the House, Rosales said, “there is still time to avert the moral tragedy that would be brought by the RH Bill.”

“Change the provisions or disregard the bill altogether which does not show respect for life and cause the loss of responsibility and discipline that are now needed by the people and the country,” he added.

A sense of order, moreover, is not confined just to government manuals. In the wake of the disaster, there has been no looting, no rioting. Even as people hoping for food, water and fuel wait in kilometer-long lines in freezing weather â€" sometimes without success â€" tempers have not flared.

Kaya ba kaha nato ni...  ???

How come you pay an extra 25 cents to get something put on your hamburger but they don't take off the price if you get something taken off?

You should be glad that they don't charge you for ordering special (by asking for something to be taken off)...

Yes, for money......, and love will follow if there is always money.

If there is money, there will be followers aplenty--and love is not always the foremost of them...
