5. Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra is located at the base of the throat. It is represented with the color blue. This Chakra is the energy center for talking and self-expression. When this Chakra is under-active you are likely to be introverted and shy. You probably don’t talk too much and may have a tendency to lie. Being over-active you can tend to be over bearing with how much you talk and tend not to listen very well.

4. Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra is located at the spine and level with the heart. It is represented by the color green. This Chakra is the energy center for love and affection, your kindness to others, being compassionate and friendly. You live in harmony with your friends and easily make new friends. Being closed or under-active, you will tend to be cold and distant. Others tend to not notice you or you are very rude to them. Being over active, you will tend to smother your relations. You love will usually have a very selfish reason.

3. Navel Chakra

The Navel Chakra is located on the spine a little higher than the navel. It is sometimes referred to as the Solar Plexus Chakra. It is represented by the color yellow. The Navel Chakra is associated with asserting yourself and your self-esteem. Under-active Navel Chakra usually has reference to being timid and indecisive. You probably don’t get what you want or have a hard time letting someone know your opinions about the situation. Being over-active, you are probably aggressive and domineering.

2. Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is located at the sacral bone, or lower back. It is represented by the color Orange. The Sacral Chakra is the energy center in control of feelings and sexuality. Being open does not mean you are over-emotional but that you can express your feelings freely. You will not feel ashamed to let your feelings be known. You are also secure with your sexuality. This doesn’t mean bragging about how much sex you have. When this Chakra is under-active, you tend to bottle up all emotions or tend to have a permanent poker face. Over-emotionally attached to people is characteristic of over-active Sacral Chakra.

In many religions and practices, there is a belief that there are many energy centers in the body that are tuned to an aspect of life. The energy centers, charkas, are represented with colors and are believed that the person has the ability to open and close them individually with practice and discipline. This is a subject which most people have heard of but few know the details. In order from lowest to highest, here are the charkas.

The Root Chakra is located between the anus and genitalia. It is represented with the color red. The Root Chakra is the energy center that helps you feel at home in situations. It is also what controls your feeling of physically being there. You will have a sufficient trust level for other people. When you feel nervous or fearful this Chakra is under-active or blocked. When it is over active, you will tend to obsess with security and very resistant to change. You may also be materialistic and greedy.

The Philippine Cobra (Naja philippinensis) is a stocky, highly venomous snake native to the Philippines. The Philippine Cobra is called "ulupong" in Tagalog and "Agwason" in Cebuano-Bisaya.

Description

The average length of this species is 1,70 m. Populations from Mindoro Island are known to be up to 2 metres in length (Lutz, M., 2006). Its color is light to medium brown while the young cobra's color is a darker brown.

Scalation

They have 23-27 scale rows around the neck and 21 just above the middle part of the body.

Identification

Fairly stockily built. Pattern: adults uniformly light or medium brown, occasionally some lighter variegations; juveniles dark brown, with lighter variegations, sometimes a dark band behind the throat. Scalation: 23-27 (usually 25) scale rows around neck, 21 (rarely 23) just ahead of mid-body; 182-193 ventrals, 36-49 subcaudals, basal pairs sometimes undivided.

Distribution

The Philippine cobra can be found on the islands of Luzon, Mindoro, Catanduanes, Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte and Masbate. It is also likely to occur on other neighbouring islands. Records from the Calamianes group and Palawan require confirmation.

Habitat

Philippine Cobra’s habitat include open fields, human settlements and dense jungle.

Diet

The snake feeds predominantly on small mammals. Rodents are preferred diet however they also feed on frogs, lizards, small birds and eggs.

The venom of the Philippine cobra is a neurotoxin which affects cardiac and respiratory function and can cause neurotoxicity and respiratory paralysis(the postsynaptic neurotoxins interrupt the transmission of nerve signals by binding to the neuro-muscular junctions near the muscles). The symptoms might include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dizzyness, collapse, convulsions. Particularly in children, collapse and convulsions may be the first evidence of envenoming, at least for certain species. It is often assumed that hypotension will occur in response to envenoming, but hypertension is also common and both tachycardia and bradycardia are reported. Complete respiratory failure leads to victim's death. The death time of the victims is usually about several minutes in average (the fastest recorded is at some 30 seconds) after the envenomation. -Wiki

DAMASCUS, Syria -- Facing an extraordinary wave of popular dissent, Syrian President Bashar Assad fired his cabinet Tuesday and promised to end widely despised emergency laws -- concessions unlikely to appease protesters demanding sweeping reforms in one of the most hard-line nations in the Middle East.

The protest movement began after security forces arrested several teens who scrawled anti-government graffiti on a wall in the impoverished city of Daraa in the south.

The protests spread to other provinces and the government launched a swift crackdown, killing more than 60 people since March 18, according to Human Rights Watch. However, the violence has eased in the last few days, and some predicted the demonstrations might die out quickly if the president's promises appear genuine.

"People are tired from all this pressure and violence and I think if (Assad) shows he's taken the people's demands seriously, they might stop," said a protester in Daraa who gave only his first name, Ibrahim, for fear of reprisals by security forces. "We're all waiting for his speech."

Still, tensions remained high in Daraa, where several hundred people staged a sit-in Tuesday, and in the Mediterranean port of Latakia, which has a potentially volatile mix of different religious groups.

Earlier Tuesday, the Syrian government mobilized hundreds of thousands of supporters who poured into the streets of Damascus and across many parts of the country as the regime tried to show it has mass support.

Meanwhile, Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh blamed "hired agents" for starting an insurgency in his country, a day after a deadly explosion at a weapons factory in the south.

At least 100 people were killed in Monday's blast.

http://www.care2.com/causes/womens-rights/blog/11-year-old-gang-raped-in-a-california-park-bathroom/

This has been an incredibly depressing month for women's rights; not one, but two gang-rapes of young girls have made their way into the news.  According to ABC news, eight teen boys in Moreno Valley, California have been accused of luring a middle-school girl from a shopping mall and brutally raping her in the men's room of a park nearby.

Police say that all of the teens were part of a local gang, and they have speculated that the rape may be part of an initiation rite.  Apparently an older girl was used to lure the young girl to the park, and she may also be charged with abetting the crime.  Strikingly, the victim herself returned to the mall afteward and came forward to police to report the crime.  Most of the boys were arrested soon thereafter.

This case seems a little different from other recent cases - the event does not seem to have been photographed.  More disturbingly, only one of the suspects in this case is over the age of 18.  The oldest teen, Michael Sykes, was located and arrested most recently.  One surprising element, according to police, is that the girl appears to have been an innocent victim, chosen randomly.

"It appears they were looking for a victim and lured her back to the waiting males," a police officer said. "I don't know about motivation. I just want to say that it looks like that gang lifestyle and gang activity."

It seems, though, that people are reacting to the case with damaging negative rhetoric about gang violence.  The city's mayor said, "The resources are out there, this isn't a crime wave.  Gang members are uncivilized people. They don't seem to have respect for human beings ... The fact that anyone could consider this behavior something a gang would be proud of, is beyond me."

This certainly isn't the way to respond, even to such a horrific crime, and displays prejudice and judgment about gang members' motives (if this is, in fact, a gang-related crime).  The investigation is still unfolding, and we'll keep you posted as we get more information about this horrible case.

Authorities have captured a 19-year-old California man they say is responsible, along with six others, for the gang rape of an 11-year-old girl inside a park bathroom.

Michael Sykes, a suspected gang member, was arrested Monday morning at a Moreno Valley home, police sources confirm to FoxNews.com.

Police allege that Sykes, along with six juvenile gang members, raped the child in the bathroom at Moreno Valley's Victoriano Park between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. March 10, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

The attack, which was on the south side of the city near Moreno Valley College, wasn't made public until Sunday, and police have not released further details about the incident.

"As a father â€" even as a police officer â€" there are crimes that shock us. This is one of them," Capt. John Anderson, chief of the Moreno Valley station, said.

Detectives told the newspaper that the girl was at a shopping center near the park when she was approached by an older girl, who lured her to the bathroom where the six boys and the 19-year-old were waiting.

The attack was in an area where gangs and crime aren't a problem, Anderson said.

The six juveniles were arrested shortly after the rape and booked at Riverside County juvenile hall for investigation of sexual assault on a child. Sykes eluded authorities until his arrest Monday. Each of the suspects will face sexual assault and gang enhancement charges, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's office.

Authorities have so far not released the named of the teens because they are minors. Police sources, however, say the boys are all over 14 and could be charged as adults.

Anyone with information in the gang rape case is urged to contact Detective Duke Viveros at 951-247-8700.

China will soon surpass the US as the country that publishes the most scientific papers -- meaning that, some say, China is well on its way to leaving the US, the UK, Germany, Japan and many other countries in the dust when it comes to scientific endeavors and research. According to the Guardian, China is currently only second to the US now and will be the dominant publisher of scientific papers by 2013, a report by the Royal Society says. Furthermore, the "traditional superpowers of science" are being challenged more and more by those from the "world's emerging economies," including Iran, Tunisia and Turkey, as well as South Korea and India.

The Royal Society counted papers that had abstracts in English and that had appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The report found that, from 1993-2003 and 2004-2008,

the US dominated the world's science, but its share of publications dropped from 26% to 21%. China's share rose from 4.4% to 10.2%. The UK's share declined from 7.1% to 6.5% of the world's papers.

The BBC also notes China's rise in the area of science publishing:

In 1996, the first year of the analysis, the US published 292,513 papers - more than 10 times China's 25,474.

By 2008, the US total had increased very slightly to 316,317 while China's had surged more than seven-fold to 184,080.

Previous estimates for the rate of expansion of Chinese science had suggested that China might overtake the US sometime after 2020.

But this study shows that China, after displacing the UK as the world's second leading producer of research, could go on to overtake America in as little as two years' time.

China, says the BBC, has increased spending on science by 10% since 1999 and now spends over $100 billion on science. In 2006, China's schools graduated as many as 1.5 million science and engineering students.

Says Chris Llewellyn Smith, director of energy research at Oxford University and chair of the Royal Society's study:

"The scientific world is changing and new players are fast appearing. Beyond the emergence of China, we see the rise of South-East Asian, Middle Eastern, North African and other nations...

"The increase in scientific research and collaboration, which can help us to find solutions to the global challenges we now face, is very welcome. However, no historically dominant nation can afford to rest on its laurels if it wants to retain the competitive economic advantage that being a scientific leader brings."

Indeed, Llewellyn Smith speaks positively about the globalization of science:
Global issues, such as climate change, potential pandemics, bio-diversity, and food, water and energy security, need global approaches. These challenges are interdependent and interrelated, with complicated dynamics that are often overlooked by policies and programmes put in place to address them.

"Science has a very important role in addressing global challenges and collaboration is necessary so that everybody can agree on global solutions. The more countries are involved in science, the more innovations we will have and the better off we will be."

The Royal Society's report should also be a wake-up call to the US about the need to keep supporting and strengthening science education in this country. Sure, we need to keep apace with other countries. Most of all we need to keep supporting innovation and new technologies by fostering knowledge and a love of science in today's children, who will be tomorrow's scientists.

The Cause

McDuffie understands the topic of bestiality is a tough one for people to hear and deal with. She is asking the public for help in getting laws passed. She does not want this to turn into a witch hunt for the alleged perpetrator or a call for punishment.

She believes the boy is also a victim of being born into a household and culture where dog fighting and the resultant violence is an accepted standard. She is also pragmatic enough to realize that putting any effort into bringing him to justice will do nothing for all the future animals who may become subjected to similar abuse.

Even though a police report was filed and evidence was collected, there was no forensic evidence with which to prosecute.  More importantly, under present laws, the dogs would have been confiscated as evidence, sent to live in the shelter until the case came to court. That would have been a certain death sentence for all three dogs because they would not have had access to the multiple surgical procedures they required. To date, each pup has had four invasive surgeries.

Similar to Megan's Law -- the result of a grieving family trying to make positive change from tragedy -- McDuffie wants Charity's cruel death to result in something positive for other animals. She is calling her campaign Charity’s Law.

How You Can Help

The effort to actually get an animal welfare law presented to federal legislators is arduous in itself.  If it does make it from committee to the floor, it will most likely take years to get it passed.  Only by enough people working together and demanding new and more effective laws will animals be given some measure of protection.

Sign the Care2 petition [http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/868/425/254/?z00m=19955614]. This will show legislators there are enough people who want bestiality made punishable as a felony.

Attend the fundraiser for Charity's Law on July 30, 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Jaxx Nightclub in Springfield, Virginia. Several rock bands have been booked so far, with more to be announced.

Volunteer to help McDuffie get Charity's Law introduced and through the legislative process. Contact her at eaglesdenrescue@live.com.

Follow the Facebook page and spread the word of McDuffie's mission.

Charity's Law

McDuffie is calling her quest "Charity’s Law" in honor of one of the three little Pit bull puppies she took into her rescue, Eagle's Animal Haven and Den Rescue, Inc. in March of 2010.  The shelter staff didn't know why the three pups wouldn't eat.  They were fearful -- especially of men and older boys -- and sat huddled together with obvious fear on their little faces.  It turns out Charity and her sister siblings, Faith and Hope would not eat due to intestinal perforations.

The photo above shows Charity, Faith and Hope in their self-protective habit â€" a ritual they performed daily.  Doesn't the look on their faces make you think they are trying to alienate themselves from the outside world?  No puppy should have to endure the abuse they have suffered.

"So if you want to help, if you want it to stop ... there is only one way. Make it illegal all over the United States. Make uniform laws so that all animal abuse carries mandatory sentences" said McDuffie on Facebook.

What Happened

Once McDuffie took the girls to her veterinarian for an initial examination he informed her that the pups, in his opinion, had been sexually molested. The dogs were less than two months old at the time of the attack. Adding insult to injury was the findings during surgery that metal screws and other foreign objects had been inserted into their rectums causing intestinal perforations.

Performing her own inquiry into the alleged abuse, McDuffie found a witness who told her she saw a neighbor's 13 year old son "having sex" with the puppies. The witness will not come forward to testify for fear of reprisal. The boy's father apparently is a well known dog fighter and breeder of fight dogs in the area. McDuffie also told me that this boy's father was recently arrested and jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail and all of his children are under protective services with the state of North Carolina.

Sadly, Charity died of complications from her injuries when she was six months old. McDuffie and her husband, Jerry are currently fostering Hope and Faith along with caring for their own nine dogs. They report Faith is the most loving of the two and only wants to be hugged and petted. Hope is progressing but is still quite fearful of strangers, especially teenage boys.

When do you decide enough is enough?

We all have different points at which that conclusion is reached. A thirty year veteran in animal rescue and North Carolina native, Beth McDuffie, 53, reached it last year when she was called by her local shelter to help with three Pit bull puppies that wouldn't eat. The why is unspeakable but will be addressed later in this post.

Suffice it to say, this was a turning point for McDuffie. And the turn she took is to start stepping away from rescuing so she can dedicate her efforts to getting laws changed. Her goal, ultimately, is for a federal law to be passed making bestiality a felony throughout the U.S. Adding to the fact McDuffie suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and her husband is 20 years her senior, she admits it is time to let her best efforts be directed by what her limitations will allow.

McDuffie knows just how difficult a battle she has chosen as evidenced by the negative response she is receiving from those in her community.  But she is determined.  She has spent the past year researching laws throughout the different states and discovered only 17 states make bestiality a felony. They are: Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington.

Fourteen states consider it a misdemeanor, those being: Arkansas, California, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wisconsin.

The remaining states do not address bestiality as a crime against animals.   They are: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Montana, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.  Some of those states do consider it a misdemeanor if pornography or a minor child is involved.

Evidently, the fact that animals are possessions under the law does not allow for compassion toward the actual abuse victim -- the animal -- regarding bestiality.

McDuffie's plan is to gather enough momentum from the public to get a law put before the North Carolina legislature. Once she succeeds in getting it passed, she plans on lobbying for a federal law addressing the issue and making it a felony.  She will need to find volunteers in each of the 50 states to work with her on contacting legislators and initiating the legal process for introduction of Charity's Law.

Statement of Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda:
On the execution of Ramon Credo, Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, and Elizabeth Batain in Xiamen and Guangzhou, China on March 30, 2011

[Read by the Deputy Spokesperson during a press briefing at Malacñang on March 30, 2011]

We have been informed that Ramon Credo, Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, and Elizabeth Batain were administered lethal injections to carry out the sentence imposed by the courts of the People’s Republic of China this morning. Our government had taken every available opportunity to appeal to the authorities of China for clemency in their cases, to which the Chinese government responded with a postponement of the execution. In the end, however, the sentence was imposed.

The nation sympathized with the families of the condemned, sharing their sense of looming loss. We sympathize with these families now. Their deaths are a vivid lesson in the tragic toll the drug trade takes on entire families.

We are resolved to ensure that the chain of victimization, as pushers entrap and destroy lives in pursuit of their trade, will be broken. Those who traffic in illegal drugs respect no laws, no boundaries, and have no scruples about destroying lives. Our response must be relentless, with government and the citizenry working together to ensure vigilance and mutual support to prevent our countrymen from being used by drug pushers as sacrificial pawns, whether at home or abroad.

Hmm. Winds of change that have blown steadily elsewhere in the world are now blowing in China. But this "growing trend" will most likely be a slow process.

A Review by Ronald Jones:

Harrison Salisbury has an eye and an ease with the nature and landscapes of China as well as an incisive sense of the political realities. Whether he is following Mao through the paddy fields or Deng Xiaoping through the Cultural Revolution, he creates a sweeping and convincing narrative. I recommend this as a China primer and I would recommend it to others who want to know the basics before moving on to details. Perhaps it's a little dated now, but useful nonetheless.

Health and Food / Home Remedy For Bee Stings
March 30, 2011, 08:06:49 PM

One of the best ways to remove a stingerâ€"and avoid any additional painâ€"is to “scrape”â€"it out of the skin with a credit card, a knife or a long fingernail, advises John Yunginger, M.D., professor and pediatrics consultant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “The biggest mistake people make is trying to pull the stinger out. In doing that, you squeeze the tiny venom sac attached to the stinger and accidentally release more venom into your skin.” If you scrape the stinger out, this sac goes undisturbed. Some doctors say baking soda can help ease bee sting pain. Claude Frazier, M.D., an allergist in Asheville, North Carolina, recommends applying a paste of baking soda and water directly on the sting for 15 or 20 minutes. Another cure is to make a paste with meat tenderizer and water and apply it to the sting â€" the tenderizer breaks down the proteins in the venom, speeding up recovery.

Asia Pacific News.Net
Thursday 29th March, 2007 (ANI)

Beijing, Mar 28 : Only about 2.2 percent of women in China consider sex as the most valuable factor to make them happy, a recent survey has found. About 22.5 percent of the women surveyed prioritized love as the big happiness maker, because the word 'sex' was still considered as a taboo.

Notably, the factor of "self-fulfillment" ranked highest for the Chinese women to make them happy, as more than 60 percent of the respondents voted for it.

Citing a reason for a low percentage of women linking their happiness to sex, a leading sexologist in the country said that traditionally the word 'sex' carried negative meanings. "The word was stereotyped with negative meanings. A good woman should not like sex. Love is a beautiful word," said Li Yinhe, a noted sexologist and professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

"But, power, money and sex all represent the negative things. It (power) shows big progress. More and more women want to achieve their life value, which eclipses the importance of the private life for women. When women start to value self fulfillment, they become more equal to men," the China Daily quoted her as saying.

She added: "The high marks for self -fulfillment are inspiring and encouraging."

The survey was conducted by the Yueji.Self, a Chinese-language magazine jointly launched this month by the Chinese-language Women of China magazine and the New York-based magazine publisher "Conde Nast Publications".

According to the paper, in China the traditional mindset is that men live for their careers and women live for love.

The fact that only about 22.5 percent surveyed prioritized love as the big happiness maker demonstrated that love was no longer the most important factor for a woman to be happy in China. This is perhaps reflected in the growing trend that many Chinese women were opting to remain single.

The survey was the first of its kind to be carried out in 15 cities on the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan province.

I am an American, not by accident of birth but by choice. I voted with my feet and became an American because I love this country and think it is exceptional. But when I look at the world today and the strong winds of technological change and global competition, it makes me nervous. Perhaps most unsettling is the fact that while these forces gather strength, Americans seem unable to grasp the magnitude of the challenges that face us. Despite the hyped talk of China's rise, most Americans operate on the assumption that the U.S. is still No. 1.

But is it? Yes, the U.S. remains the world's largest economy, and we have the largest military by far, the most dynamic technology companies and a highly entrepreneurial climate. But these are snapshots of where we are right now. The decisions that created today's growth â€" decisions about education, infrastructure and the like â€" were made decades ago. What we see today is an American economy that has boomed because of policies and developments of the 1950s and '60s: the interstate-highway system, massive funding for science and technology, a public-education system that was the envy of the world and generous immigration policies. Look at some underlying measures today, and you will wonder about the future. (Watch TIME's video "Why Cities Are Key to American Success in the 21st Century.")

The following rankings come from various lists, but they all tell the same story. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), our 15-year-olds rank 17th in the world in science and 25th in math. We rank 12th among developed countries in college graduation (down from No. 1 for decades). We come in 79th in elementary-school enrollment. Our infrastructure is ranked 23rd in the world, well behind that of every other major advanced economy. American health numbers are stunning for a rich country: based on studies by the OECD and the World Health Organization, we're 27th in life expectancy, 18th in diabetes and first in obesity. Only a few decades ago, the U.S. stood tall in such rankings. No more. There are some areas in which we are still clearly No. 1, but they're not ones we usually brag about. We have the most guns. We have the most crime among rich countries. And, of course, we have by far the largest amount of debt in the world.
