Inspiration & Hope / Time To Think
April 16, 2011, 06:24:22 PM

Henry Ford hired an efficiency expert to go through his plant. He said, "Find the nonproductive people. Tell me who they are, and I will fire them!"

The expert made the rounds with his clipboard in hand and finally returned to Henry Ford's office with his report. "I've found a problem with one of your administrators," he said. "Every time I walked by, he was sitting with his feet propped up on the desk. The man never does a thing. I definitely think you should consider getting rid of him!" When Henry Ford learned the name of the man the expert was referring to, Ford shook his head and said, "I can't fire him. I pay that man to do nothing but think - and that's what he's doing."

Nicolo Paganini was a well-known and gifted nineteenth century violinist. He was also well known as a great showman with a quick sense of humor. His most memorable concert was in Italy with a full orchestra. He was performing before a packed house and his technique was incredible, his tone was fantastic, and his audience dearly loved him. Toward the end of his concert, Paganini was astounding his audience with an unbelievable composition when suddenly one string on his violin snapped and hung limply from his instrument. Paganini frowned briefly, shook his head, and continued to play, improvising beautifully.

Then to everyone's surprise, a second string broke. And shortly thereafter, a third. Almost like a slapstick comedy, Paganini stood there with three strings dangling from his Stradivarius. But instead of leaving the stage, Paganini stood his ground and calmly completed the difficult number on the one remaining string.

Deconstructing Harry

Woody Allen's Harry Block takes the elevator to Hell, which manages to include some sinners Dante didn't specify: "Floor Five: Subway muggers, aggressive panhandlers, and book critics. Floor Six: right-wing extremists, serial killers, lawyers who appear on television. Floor Seven: The Media. Sorry, that floor is all filled up. Floor Eight: escaped war criminals, TV evangelists, and the NRA." After a run-in with his father, Harry has a chat with the devil character (Billy Crystal), who offers to turn on the air conditioning ("it f___s up the ozone layer").

Nine Lives

In Heavenly Puss, a 1949 Tom and Jerry short, Tom demonstrates his feline ability to survive death â€" well in his dreams, at least. Tom imagines that he is squashed to death by a piano in one of his epic fights with little Jerry. When he reaches heaven's gate, he is refused entry because of his cruelty to his rodent enemy. In order to be admitted to heaven, he must get Jerry to sign a certificate of forgiveness. Jerry, of course, is dismissive and toys with Tom, but eventually signs to keep bulldog devil Spike from snatching Tom away to hell. It's too late, though, and the stairs to heaven disappear. Luckily, Tom wakes up.

Blake's Prophetic Book

The English poet, artist and engraver William Blake created Jerusalem, The Emanation of the Giant Albion between 1804 and 1820. It was the longest and the last of his prophetic books, in which he created his own personal mythology and mixed it with biblical history. The epic poem illustrates the fall and eventual salvation of Albion, the universal human. The plate above â€" one of the 100 included in Jerusalem â€" depicts the characters Vala, Hyle and Skofeld.

Judge Not

Tourists crowd into the Sistine Chapel for its ceiling, but also for its altar wall, home to Michelangelo's "The Last Judgment." The towering fresco, completed in 1541, was painted under Pope Paul III. The detail above, from the lower right corner of the wall, show where the damned descend after being judged by Christ. After the Pope's master of ceremonies criticized this genitalia-inclusive "Last Judgment" as inappropriate, Michelangelo painted him in as Minos, a judge of Hell, encircled by a serpent and fitted with the ears of an ass.

One of Three

No, surreal as it is, it's not a Dalí, and it's far removed from the 20th century. Flemish painter Hieronymus Bosch created the massive triptych "The Garden of Earthly Delights" c. 1500. The Hell scene (a portion of which is shown above) is just the right panel of the 7-by-13-ft. (220 by 390 cm) piece, the left panel of which features a much more placid environment: Adam and Eve in Eden. Both that and the center panel â€" depicting those earthly pleasures â€" are full of light; Bosch warns, though, that darkness, and all its attendant horrors, is just across the border. Packed with detail and symbolism, Madrid's Prado calls it "one of his most enigmatic works."

Gilded Manuscript

Prayer book The Hours of Catherine of Cleves was commissioned for Catherine of Cleves in 1430 when she was to marry Arnold, Duke of Guelders. With its 157 miniatures, The Hours is considered the greatest Dutch illuminated manuscript in the world. It was taken apart in the 19th Century and rebound incorrectly into two volumes. Here, an angel releases souls from purgatory.

The Inferno

In the 14th century, Florentine Dante Alighieri brought together biblical, mythological, historical, and contemporary figures in his Inferno, the cultural influence of which can hardly be overstated. The Inferno, the first part of his epic poem, La Divina Commedia, has Virgil (who described the underworld in the Aeneid) guiding Dante through nine circles of a Christian Hell. As he spirals down, he sees all sorts of those who have sinned â€" adulterers, murderers, traitors â€" and their awful corresponding torments.

The very language of love is painful: you have a crush; you're swept off your feet; your heart is broken. This turns out not to be poetic license: according to the latest research, the brain doesn't distinguish much between the extreme emotional pain of social rejection and the physical pain of injury. Both experiences can activate the same neural pathways, which is why when your lover dumps you, it can hurt in a real, visceral way.

Previous studies have documented the overlap in brain activity between emotional and physical pain, but those focused mainly on the regions that layer on feelings about bodily pain--that is, the "I don't want to feel that again" response after we stub a toe. Until now, no studies linked purely emotional sources of pain like heartache or grief with the neural networks that register, say, the sting of a burned hand.

For the new study, scientists recruited 40 volunteers who were recently and abruptly rejected by their partners. Using functional MRI images, the researchers showed that when the jilted participants looked at pictures of their exes, their brains engaged the same pain circuits that lit up when they were probed with a heat sensor (equivalent to holding a hot cup of coffee). The researchers think the intensity of the subjects' emotional hurt activated the brain's sensory pain pathways that are normally tapped only by physical stimuli such as a slap or searing heat.

What does this mean for treating the pain of rejection? Unfortunately, antidotes for physical discomfort, like aspirin, probably won't help the lovelorn much, since any reminder of the ex simply reignites the suffering. So for now, time may still be the most powerful healer. But these findings at least suggest that the hurt isn't entirely in your head.

Health and Food / Re: Kabsa
April 16, 2011, 01:15:41 PM

Kabsa is a family of rice dishes that are served mostly in Saudi Arabia â€" where it is commonly regarded as a national dish â€" and the other Arab states of the Persian Gulf. Kabsa, though, is believed to be indigenous to Yemen.

These dishes are mainly made from a mixture of spices, rice (usually long-grain basmati), meat and vegetables. There are many kinds of kabsa and each kind has a uniqueness about it. Pre-mixed kabsa spices are now available under several brand names. These reduce preparation time but may have a flavour distinct from traditional kabsa. The spices used in kabsa are largely responsible for its taste; these are generally black pepper, cloves, cardamom, saffron, cinnamon, black lime, bay leaves and nutmeg. The main ingredient that accompanies the spices is the meat, such as chicken, goat, lamb, camel, or sometimes beef, fish, and shrimp.

The meat or fish is first grilled or barbecued after being marinated, but sometimes the marinated meat is browned with some onions along with spices, then water is added and the liquid drained off to add to the rice, the meat is browned further and served. The rice is then cooked in meat stock with various spices and onion and placed in a mound with the meat on top.

The vegetable is also known as Malabar Spinach, Ceylon Spinach or the red vine. The stem is purplish (shade of red) and succulent with heart shape leaves. It bears green to dark red fruits (correct me if I am wrong).

The young leaves are popular vegetable stuff. It can be boiled (boil until cooked and discard water), used as salad ingredient and other dishes like ginisa.

The plant is also popular for its medicinal properties. Growing it in your garden is a nice idea.

1)  A good source of essential nutrients. Excellent source of calcium, iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B and iron.

2) Contain saponins that act as phytochemicals. Fights cancer and other diseases.

3) Roots are employed as rubefacient â€" a medicine for external application that produces redness of the skin.

4) Roots are also used as poultice to reduce local swellings.

5) The sap can be applied to acne areas to eliminate irritation.

6) The sap has a softening or soothing effect especially to the skin.

7) A diuretic.

8 ) A mild laxative.

9) Pulped leaves are applied to boils, ulcers and abscesses.

10) Leaf juice with sugar is effective for inflammation of the nose and throat with increased production of mucus. Also used to treat gonorrhea and balanitis

11) Leaf juice with butter has a soothing effect on burns and scalds.

12) Stem and leaf extract can cure habitual headache.

13) Fruits maybe used as cheeks and lips make-up and dye.

14) Good source of fibers.

“The PNP are conducting seriously in Human Trafficking, we are protecting the rights of the woman specially minors,” matud pang Santander.

(EIM) (BANATNEWS)

Rudolf Steiner (one-time Theosophist, and the founder of Anthroposophy) says much about the chakras that is unusual, especially that the chakra system is dynamic and evolving and is very different for modern people than it was in ancient times, and will in turn be radically different in future times. In contrast to the traditional eastern teachings, Steiner describes a sequence of development from the top down rather than the bottom up. This is the so called 'Christos Path' which has not always been available to humanity. [This is also revealed by Swami Sivananda in his book on Japa Yoga, Himalaya Press 1978. In which the Swami states that a yogi that practices Japa with only the Om and is successful at Mahasamyama {oneness with the object...in this case a Word being meditated on} becomes a direct disciple of that, the OM, the most Holy of all words/syllables { the same as the word of creation as recognized by the Torah, although this is not professed or quite possibly not even recognized by those of secular authority in either Judaism or Christianity} thus the yogi achieving this feat needs no Guru or Sat-guru* to achieve any Spiritual goal {*Archetype / Ascended Master i.e. A Krishna, a Rama, a Jesus, a Nanak a Buddha..et al.} and Swami Sivananda mentions that this yogi has a path that is, in all recognizable ways and manners, reverse that of other Yogis or Spiritual aspirants and their paths and those include all Christian ascetics, in that this spiritual aspirant then works through the chakras, mastering them from the crown down.

The chakras are thought to vitalise the physical body and to be associated with interactions of a physical, emotional and mental nature. They are considered loci of life energy or prana, also called shakti, qi (Chinese; ki in Japanese), koach-ha-guf (Hebrew), bios (Greek) & aether (Greek, English), which is thought to flow among them along pathways called nadis. The function of the chakras is to spin and draw in this energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance. They are said by some to reflect how the unified consciousness of humanity (the immortal human being or the soul), is divided to manage different aspects of earthly life (body/instinct/vital energy/deeper emotions/communication/having an overview of life/contact to God). The chakras are placed at differing levels of spiritual subtlety, with Sahasrara at the top being concerned with pure consciousness, and Muladhara at the bottom being concerned with matter, which is seen simply as condensed, or gross consciousness. --Wiki

It is true that the rivers went nosing like swine,
Tugging at banks, until they seemed
Bland belly-sounds in somnolent troughs,

That the air was heavy with the breath of these swine,
The breath of turgid summer, and
Heavy with thunder's rattapallax,

That the man who erected this cabin, planted
This field, and tended it awhile,
Knew not the quirks of imagery,

That the hours of his indolent, arid days,
Grotesque with this nosing in banks,
This somnolence and rattapallax,

Seemed to suckle themselves on his arid being,
As the swine-like rivers suckled themselves
While they went seaward to the sea-mouths.
