About P5 million worth of shabu amounting to almost half a kilo was confiscated by operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation in separate raids in Bohol, a report on Unang Balita on Wednesday said.

A man was arrested in Panglao after he was found in possession of some packets containing shabu. He also had a gun and cash worth P60,000 on him when he was arrested, the report said.

Meanwhile, in a separate operation in the first district of Taloto in Tagbilaran City, two men were caught with packets of shabu and drug paraphernalia.

The arrested men will be charged with violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

The men denied the accusations.

According to the NBI, the operations were conducted after they received tips about the selling of illegal drugs in the said areas, the report said. â€"KG, GMA News

The motion was passed by 119 votes, but 45 countries abstained from the vote.

At the time, Israel's UN representative Ron Prosor said the move was a "blatant attempt to hijack the UN", insisting that the only way Palestinians could achieve statehood was through direct negotiations.

There have been clashes between Palestinians and Israelis in east Jerusalem in recent weeks
In 2012, the UN General Assembly voted to upgrade the status of the Palestinians to that of a "non-member observer state" allowing them to take part in assembly debates.

It followed a failed bid to join the international body as a full member state in 2011 because of a lack of support in the UN Security Council.

Mr Abbas will address the General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, with Israel's president, Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking a day later.

He is expected to call on Palestinians to end "incitement to violence".

In recent weeks, there have been clashes at the al-Aqsa mosque complex in East Jerusalem. Al-Aqsa is one of Islam's holiest sites and is in the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif site also revered by Jews.

Early on Wednesday, Israel carried out a series of air strikes on Gaza, hours after the Israeli Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted a rocket from the enclave.

The decision to raise the flag won 119 votes, but 45 countries abstained

The Palestinian flag is to be raised for the first time at the United Nations later in what the Palestinian leader says will be "a most emotional and proud day".

Earlier this month, the UN General Assembly passed a motion to raise the Palestinian and Vatican flags.

Israel criticised the move and they, the United States and six other countries voted against it.
The Israeli and Palestinian presidents will speak before the UN this week.

"The sense of pride among the Palestinian people was overwhelming the day the world voted in favour of this landmark initiative," Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas wrote for the Huffington Post on Tuesday.

"I am certain that the day our flag rises among the flags of the community of nations will also be a most emotional and proud day."

He also called for a multilateral solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, adding: "The UN must give my people more than hope."

A Mexican councillor has provoked outrage after that homeless people should be put down like animals to keep the number of them on the streets down.

Olga Gutierrez Machorro believes that beggars should be culled with lethal injection, believing it to be in their best interests.

She said: “Yes they’re a little crazy, but they’re harmless.

“Which is why I think to myself wouldn’t it be kinder to just give them a lethal injection?”

Unbelievably, Machorro, who is a member of the local government in Tecamachalco, Mexico, is also the councillor responsible for the Vulnerable Groups Commission - who try to find ways to help the homeless and disadvantaged.

Her outrageous remarks, made in an interview with the local newspaper Cambio, came when she alleged the Tecamachalco government, led by Ines Lopez, lacked the necessary resources to deal with beggars who are increasing in number on the streets.

She alleged that killing beggars was already going on unofficially, and added that the local psychiatric hospital, El Batan, often just deposited patients deemed “un-aggressive” in the middle of the motorways at night, where they are killed by cars but also cause accidents that put others at risk.

Machorro has previously offered her own home as sanctuary for those on the streets, but claimed this was not a long term solution.

TAVARES, Florida â€" It’s a milestone Jaxon Buell wasn’t supposed to make.

But the baby, who was born without most of his brain, just celebrated his first birthday at the end of August.

According to the Boston Globe, the Florida boy was born with a severe brain malformation that kills most infants within days or hours of birth. Many, like Jaxon, don’t even survive long enough to be born.

It wasn’t until they got home from the hospital after his birth that Jaxon’s parents, Brandon and Brittany Buell, learned their son had a condition called anencephaly.

“It means no brain outside of a brainstem,” Brandon told the Boston Globe.

While Jaxon has defied the odds and lived far longer than expected, his parents told the Boston Globe his medical complications have grown.

In the middle of last month, the parents took their son to the emergency room at Boston Children’s Hospital. It’s one of the top hospitals for pediatric neurology.

“Our plan was to go to the emergency room because they can’t turn you away,” Brittany told the Boston Globe. “We walked in and said ‘We’re here from Florida.’”

That’s when the family learned their son has microhydranencephaly. According to the Boston Globe, it means he has a brainstem, but his cerebellum did not form properly.

His most recent brain scan showed almost nothing.

After three weeks in Boston, the family returned to Florida. While they didn’t find the miracle they were looking for, their son did receive a new medication that is helping him sleep better.

The family has chronicled their journey on Facebook with the hashtag #JaxonStrong. They also have a GoFundMe page.

The couple say people often ask if the pictures of their son are fake or Photoshopped.

“No, our baby is not Photoshopped,” they have replied again and again. -- http://fox8.com/

At first, I was disappointed not to be standing in a big group of LGBT people. But in the end, it didn't matter who you were standing next to. We stood for hours waiting in great anticipation, talking with strangers about the pope's goodness. Everyone was excited to see a man who has come to mean so much to us -- all for different reasons. While I couldn't identify the other gay moms or gay dads, I knew we were there among the 15,000 guests, some joining me in representing Family Equality Council and the people we serve, off somewhere in the crowd. For me and the other LGBT parents in the crowd, this was our pope, too!

Looking at this new pope, I thought we've come a long way. This is someone who looks at the world's population and sees all their goodness, no matter what their circumstances. His words inspire all of humanity to want to do more to make the world a more welcoming place for all God's people -- no matter what their race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic standing, etc. Just knowing how conservative many in our church can be, I think the pope's stance on many issues will make a big shift in the American Catholic church and it will only help to change the way the church leaders speak about the LGBT people and our families. I felt happy and overwhelmingly proud of the pope, being Catholic and being gay all at the same time. I think his words and deeds will also give my daughter hope that she can have a place in a church that welcomes, accepts and respects her family.

I'm even considering going back to church again and taking my daughter.

Some time has passed now and we have a new pope. Pope Francis is opening people's eyes in a different way all over the world. In early September, Family Equality Council, where I'm a board member, gave me the opportunity to be a part of arrival ceremony for the pope at the White House, to stand in witness as a Lesbian mother for what I hoped for the church and for families like mine around the world. Admittedly, I was nervous because the Pope's message isn't always reflective of our LGBT issues but I was also excited, as I believe he's opened a dialogue on so many things in a healing and positive way. His words are changing the way the larger church sees so many things - especially for LGBT folks.

The feeling in the air was electric as I stood there with the thousands, and he didn't disappoint even in the few words he did speak at that event, his first one on U.S. soil. He talked about the poor. He referenced Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, saying, "We can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it." That blew my mind, it showed how in touch he was with all of humanity. His holiness came through in such a profound way. He spoke of family and marriage, and his comments were heard by some LGBT advocates as opposing my family and those like mine. But I heard them differently. In the context of the long hard walk to equality and justice for so many people, this pope chose not to defame me. He chose to honor family and marriage, not limit which families and which marriages. And for this church, in the context of this pope's choices, that is progress. While he didn't say everything I might have hoped for it was a step and not a small one. I have lived through many changes and I know that life is a long journey made of many small and sometimes painful, hard and misguided steps. So looking back now I celebrate another step in the right direction.

Nine years later, in 2003, we adopted our daughter. As her parents, we still considered ourselves Catholic, and from day one we wanted all the benefits of being Catholic for our child. We knew we wanted to have her baptized and raised Catholic as we both had been. After moving to New Jersey, we found an LGBT-friendly and inclusive church, and my daughter attended religious instruction and eventually took her first communion.

But she slowly began to feel uncomfortable with the things she was hearing in sermons and on television about the church's stance on gays in the church. About three years ago, we got a call from a Sunday school teacher saying that they had discussed Pope Benedict XVI and my daughter had openly asked her, "Why doesn't the pope like gay people?" She didn't understand why those around the pope weren't talking to him and encouraging him to allow gay people to marry in the Catholic church -- and why he didn't believe our family was good enough to be accepted like other families. Her teacher just wanted us to be aware of the discussion and how it might be impacting our daughter. As her parents, we were proud that she felt comfortable to speak her mind and express her feelings openly as we have taught her. But our church got a new pastor, and it was slowly beginning to feel more and more conservative. It was becoming increasingly difficult for me to justify staying. Other people would ask me, "How can you still be Catholic when they don't support you and your lifestyle?" I would always say, "It's never been about the institutional church or about who leads it. I don't go to church for the pope or the institution of the church. I go for me, my faith, my family and the community life I experience in the local church." But truthfully, I wasn't feeling the support in the leader of that local church anymore -- and my daughter's struggles mirrored her parents' struggles. So we had to address the same question, "Why am I doing this?" Basically we slowly stopped going.

I tagged along with those sisters for the next ten years, trying to understand their life, working with them on weekends, doing a lot of praying. In the middle of that, I went to Maryville College in Tennessee and enjoyed what I would call normal and healthy experiences of young adulthood. I was an athlete and I played basketball and volleyball competitively through college. I had a great time, made wonderful lifelong friends, went to parties and drank a lot of beer. During college, I kept my desire to join the convent a secret. When I felt comfortable, I would tell classmates that I'd go on retreats with nuns during vacations and that I desired to become a nun after graduation. They'd be like, "What?! You're loud, you're funny, you're not typical nun-type." And this was the mid-'70s -- none of them knew any black nuns. Still I never lost the desire to become a nun and two years after graduation I entered the Brooklyn convent in September 1981. In my role, I served as a childcare worker in a group home for kids who were unable to live at home, as many had suffered various trauma and crisis. Years later I actually became the director of that group home. I did everything from waking up the children in the morning to putting them to bed at night and anything they needed in between. I stayed in the convent for over 12 years, making my first and final vows. At that time I truly believed it would be my life choice forever.

But over the years, I began to realize I was becoming more and more unhappy being a nun, something was missing. Just struggling with whether or not it was the right thing for me. It was becoming difficult to stay for many reasons: being the youngest of the sisters I lived with, being the only African-American women in the order, just to mention two. Then between the eleventh and twelfth year, I met someone, a woman I later fell in love with. She volunteered in my group home and was thinking about joining the order. It was in meeting her that I came to a major realization in my life -- I had to admit to myself that I was a lesbian, that I had deep feelings for this woman and that I wanted to be with her. I soon petitioned my superior to leave the order.

As I stood on the White House lawn watching Pope Francis drive by and wave in his cute little black Fiat last week, I felt pride: for Catholics, for my daughter, for my LGBTQ sisters and brothers. This pope symbolizes hope for a deeper connection with the people of the world in a way that speaks to who I am, how I think and the way I live my life in the service of others.

Even from the earliest years in elementary school, I always had the desire to be a nun. I was raised Catholic in a very traditional West Indian family. My brother and I were the first in our family born in the U.S. I attended St. Teresa Avila Catholic School in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, then Erasmus Hall High School in the Flatbush neighborhood. On weekends in high school, I worked in the rectory of our church and grew to have a deeper connection and love for the religious life the sisters lived. The nuns that I knew in my earlier days were predominantly teachers, but as I began a deeper exploration into the sisterhood, I found a group that better met my interest, which was social work. These women worked particularly with girls who couldn't live at home and were placed in foster care. I was intrigued by the sisters, the way they lived, their devotion and love for prayer and the people of God. I believed that I had a special calling to dedicate my life to God they way they did.

By piling sand, gravel and dead coral onto reef flats to create new land and dredging shipping channels nearby, she said, China has destroyed large areas of reefs and their biodiversity that serve as fish nurseries in much of the South China Sea.

The Philippines said the South China Sea is in an environmental crisis.

With challenges in the region to marine resources management, such as the destruction of coral reefs in the South China Sea due to massive reclamation and its attendant economic costs, the Philippines said it should be addressed by all parties concerned in order to realize Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SD Goal 14, which deals with oceans, seas and marine resources.

Edgardo Gomez, professor emeritus of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute and National Scientist, applied calculations of ecological economics to estimate that the 800 hectares of ocean filling or reclamation done by China that subsequently destroyed centuries-old coral reef ecosystems amounted to a loss worth $280 million.

“These are losses to the Vietnamese, the Filipinos, the Malaysians, the Indonesians and to the Chinese themselves,” Gomez said.

He said that because of the great value of the West Philippine Sea to many countries in the Coral Triangle Region and beyond, “all countries that are contributing to the degradation and destruction of the shallow water ecosystems must stop their activities that are known to be detrimental to the productivity and biodiversity of the waters of Southeast Asia.”

South China Sea: China’s dredging, island building taking a heavy toll on the marine environment â€" Science Magazine reports

MANILA, Philippines â€" A magazine has featured China’s island building projects in the South China Sea as destroying reefs and endangering the marine environment.

In an article in a recent issue of Science Magazine, Christina Larson wrote that the geopolitical maneuvering in the South China Sea (SCS) is taking a heavy toll on the marine environment, scientists believe.

The Spratlys â€" called Nansha by the Chinese â€" that include islets, coral reefs and atolls, have become the focus of a territorial dispute between China and its neighbors.

“To the dismay of other countries bordering the SCS â€" Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei â€" China claims most of the sea, and it is bolstering its claims with a massive land filling effort to transform some of the atolls into full-fledged islands,” Larson said.

The paint-splattered canvases may look like a preschooler's handiwork. But look closely, and hyena paws or the stroke from an elephant start to emerge.

Thirty-two paintings produced by snakes, sun bears, lemurs, even a bat, are up for auction at the Oakland Zoo in California. Bids start around $200 dollars. As of Friday, several of the animals, including Donna, the African Elephant, have a handful or more bids on eBay.

While a paintbrush might be the most common instrument to create art, it's not the tool of choice for every animal, according to Margaret Rousser, a zoological manager at the Oakland Zoo.

"Some use paintbrushes and some like to fingerpaint," Rousser told USA TODAY Network. "We hold up the canvas and let them choose their colors and paint."

In July and August, zookeepers assisted the animals during painting sessions. Rousser said the animals were not forced to paint, but treats were used as positive reinforcement for putting paint on the canvas.

"A lot of the animals are very smart and love to learn new things," Rousser said.

Stargazers were treated to a rare astronomical phenomenon when a total lunar eclipse combined with a so-called supermoon.

Those in the United States, Europe, Africa and western Asia were able to view the coupling, weather permitting, Sunday night or early Monday.

It was the first time the events have made a twin appearance since 1982, and they won't again until 2033.

When a full moon makes its closest approach to Earth, it appears slightly bigger and brighter than usual and has a reddish hue.

That coincides with a full lunar eclipse where the moon, Earth and sun will be lined up, with Earth's shadow totally obscuring the moon. (AP)

According to the famous Greek physician Hippocrates, donkey milk can be used to cure numerous ailments including poisoning, liver troubles, fevers, and several infectious diseases. This prescription was what led to a donkey milk bathing fad.

Cleopatra was said to have bathed in donkey milk every day. She supposedly needed about 500 donkeys to produce the milk she bathed in daily to preserve her beauty and youthfulness. Cleopatra was not alone in her quest for the perfect skin. Poppaea Sabina, the second wife of Roman Emperor Nero, and Pauline, sister to Napoleon Bonaparte, were also big fans of bathing in donkey milk.

According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, donkey milk does have some health benefits. In the 20th century, it was used as a substitute for human breast milk because it is more similar in composition than cow’s milk. But since an average donkey only produces about one liter of milk in a day, bathing in the milk is rather wasteful. -- http://listverse.com/

The Brothers At Nagasaki

The photograph above was taken by US Marines photographer Joe O’Donnell shortly after the bombing of Nagasaki. He saw and smelled things beyond imagining, and the experience left him with depression in his later years. Yet according to O’Donnell’s son, the image above affected him more than any other.

The younger child in the picture is dead. The older boy is his brother, and he’d carried his sibling on his back to a crematory. The older boy stayed and watched his brother burn yet refused to cry. He bit his lip so hard it bled.

The boy had just lost everything to the most destructive force known to mankind. Yet, barefoot, he’d carried his sibling’s body to ensure he was honored properly. It’s a story of the extremes of sadness and braveryâ€"and the photograph captures both. -- http://listverse.com/

Other uses for the incredible banana peel

If you can't stomach the thought of eating a banana peel, then consider some of the many other ways you can reuse this valuable product of nature. Here are a few of the 16 ways that health and wellness website Natural Living Ideas suggests:

• Add a few slices of banana peel to a bucket of water and let the mixture sit for a couple of days. Use this to water your planets. The added nutrients from the banana will keep your plants growing strong.

• You can make banana vinegar from the peels that can then be added to salads and vegetables. See the recipe instructions here.

• Place your meat atop a ripe banana peel in your roasting pan to keep the meat moist and tender as it cooks.

Whether you're gnawing on a raw peel or using it in your cooking, always make sure to wash it thoroughly.

If you then eat the skin along with the flesh you get an even bigger boost in these same nutrients:

"[The skin] contains high amounts of vitamin B6 and B12, as well as magnesium and potassium. It also contains some fiber and protein," San Diego-based nutritionist Laura Flores told LiveScience.

(Scott Veg on Flickr)

Eating the peel is not only good for your body but also better for the environment.

In 2013, bananas were America's most popular fresh fruit. The average American ate 11.4 pounds of bananas over the course of that year.

Since a medium-sized banana weighs about 0.3 pounds, that equates to about 38 bananas per person, or roughly 12 billion for the whole US. And since most of us toss the peel, that also means a lot of organic waste. Most of this waste goes to landfills, but some of it is used as fertilizer, in water purification, and in composting.

Nutritional benefits

The sweet flesh of a medium-sized banana contains significant percentages of your daily recommended intake of various nutrients, such as:

• 12% of your daily fiber, which helps with digestion and may help lower your risk of diabetes

• 17% of your vitamin C, which is important for your immune system as well as growth and development

• 20% of your vitamin B-6, which aids the body's ability to convert food into energy

• 12% of your potassium, which helps in development of cells, tissues, and organs throughout the body

•8 % of your magnesium, which is important for the body's energy productions and regulating glucose and blood pressure levels

People around the world are eating banana peels because they know something that Westerners do not

That's right, you can eat banana peels. And not only are they edible â€" they're also good for you.

If you live in the US, you're probably used to tossing banana peels in the trash. But people in other countries, including India, have been taking advantage of their nutritional benefits for decades.

While a banana's flesh is soft and sweet, the skin is thick, fibrous, and slightly bitter. To eat the peel, you can either blend it into smoothies or fry, bake, or boil them for at least 10 minutes. Heat breaks down the skin's fiber and loosens up that tough texture, making the peel easier to chew and digest.

Also, the riper you allow the banana to get, the thinner and sweeter the peel becomes. That's because of a natural plant hormone called ethylene that fruits release as they ripen.

Ethylene interacts with the sugars and fiber in the banana skin, changing complex sugars into simple sugars and breaking down pectin, a form of fiber in bananas that keeps them stiff. That's why the older your banana is, the flimsier it feels. At the same time, other hormones break down the green pigments in the peel, turning them yellow and eventually brown.

The Iglesia ni Cristo, as represented by the religious sect’s minister of the gospel Radel Cortez, has asked the Quezon City Regional Trial Court to stop visitors who are not related to the Manalo family from entering the Tandang Sora compound where the executive minister’s brother and sister were believed to be holed up in.

Trixie Angeles, counsel for respondents Felix Nathaniel “Angel” Manalo, Lolita Manalo-Hemedez and three others, said on Wednesday that even if the INC owned the property, it could not just isolate the occupants.

“They’re isolating the people who are inside. Even if I was renting, let’s say, an apartment, you cannot prevent me from having visitors when I’m not under arrest. Unless the petitioner here says these people are in fact under detention,” Angeles told reporters on Wednesday.

In its petition, INC asked the court to stop the Manalo siblings from allowing entry of Roel Rosal, Shirley Rosal, Joy Yuson and any other persons into the property.

Roel Rosal and Joy Yuson were said to have acted as leaders during an assembly in the compound where several armed men were seen.

“Petitioner respectfully submits a temporary restraining order and/or writ of preliminary injunction are necessary not only to secure the safety of the lives and property of the INC or the respondents, and of their neighbors during the pendency of the trial of this case, but to maintain the tranquility of the vicinity of the neighborhood,” the INC said.

The gorilla being comforted (Picture: Phil Moore/Getty Images)

When you need a hug, you need a hug.

And this heartbreaking picture shows that’s as true for primates as it is for the rest of us.

It shows a park ranger comforting a mountain gorilla whose mother had been killed by poachers.

Ranger Patrick Karabaranga showed compassion for the poor animal and puts his arm around it.

It was taken in the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where deforestation has resulted in severe habitat loss for animals.
