Nazis Tried To Train Dogs To Read, Write, And Speak, New Jan Bondeson Book Says
Steven Hoffer, steven.hoffer@huffingtonpost.com
First Posted: 05/25/11 05:31 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:02 PM ET

If Hitler's dog could talk, what would she say? A new
book from Dr. Jan Bondeson discusses Nazi Germany's
strange obsession with training intelligent canines.

Hitler may be on the short list of despicable dictators most undeserving of a dog's unconditional love, but that didn't stop him from trying to talk them.

According to a new book titled "Amazing Dogs: A Cabinet of Canine Curiosities," Nazi specialists attempted -- apparently with some success -- to train a fleet of "intelligent" dogs to read, write and speak.

The research comes from Cardiff University associate professor Dr. Jan Bondeson, who found that the Nazis collected pups from across Germany and put them through intense training during the 1930s at the Tier-Sprechschule ASRA (School for Dog-Human Communication) in the town of Leutenberg.

"The Nazis were sentimental enthusiasts who were really fond of animals and liked the idea that dogs were intelligent and could communicate with people," Bondeson told AOL Weird news.

Under trainer Margarethe Schmitt's direction, the institute trained dogs such as Rolf the Airedale terrier, who was said to be able to discuss religion, contemplate complex mathematics and communicate with humans by tapping out an alphabet code using his paw.

Another dog, Kurwenal, supposedly cracked jokes like a comedian and was a symbol of the educated canines of Germany.

But Hitler's presumable pick of the litter was a pooch named Don, who apparently barked "Mein Fuhrer" when asked who Adolf Hitler was.

According to Bondeson, Hitler and the Germans seem to have had hopes that the superior dogs would eventually communicate with their SS masters and act as the ultimate guard dogs.

"Why would the Nazis allow such a bizarre project to continue in a country ravaged by war unless they had an interest in studying dog-human communication?" Bondeson asks.

Considering their record on human rights, the Nazi's actually had notoriously strong feelings about animal rights.

Hitler was widely recognized as a dog lover and owned two German Shepherds, named Blondi and Bella. The dictator famously killed Blondi before taking his own life in 1945.

Bondeson says that some Nazis even wrote letters to local authorities about the pets that were being left behind when the military began forcing Jews into concentration camps.

"When the Jews were deported from certain German cities, nobody bothered about them, they said 'good riddance,'" Bondeson explains. "But as for their pets, people thought, 'Well, they can't bring those with them to the concentration camps, surely we must do something.'"

"It's a completely forgotten aspect: A good Nazi was a friend to animals." -- http://weirdnews.aol.com/

A Russian woman got so upset by the news that her boyfriend intended to leave her that she tied several firecrackers to his penis and exploded them, the Life.ru web-site reports.

The 33-year-old victim, identified as Alik D. had lived with the woman whose name was reported as Kira V. for about two years, but when the girlfriend started suggesting that they should marry, the man refused and said that he would rather return to his first wife with whom he had a son.

When Alik started moving out Kira suggested that they had a farewell dinner. After a hearty meal and some heavy drinking Alik fell asleep. The girlfriend tied several firecrackers to Alik’s penis and exploded them. The man was rushed to intensive care and doctors are reported to be fighting for his life.

Even if the man survives the girl will face up to 12 years imprisonment. -- http://www.mosnews.com/weird/2009/05/25/1909/

Police remained stumped Thursday over the mysterious shooting of a 25-year-old man and his Korean girlfriend inside a hotel room in Manila.

Manila Police District (MPD) homicide section head Inspector Armando Macaraeg told the Inquirer that although they are inclined to rule out a third-party involvement in the deaths of Emmanuel Andrew Rey Agudo, of Nagcarlan, Laguna, and 23-year-old Korean Kim Nim Jung, they have not found an explanation for the multiple bullet wounds on the bodies.

Macaraeg pointed out that they have also not determined why the door of the hotel room was locked from the inside and where the assailant could have exited if a third party had been involved.

He revealed that based on statements from the families, the two had been a couple for two years after they met as medical technology students at a university in Manila.

The bodies were discovered by hotel personnel at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, more than two hours after the couple were supposed to check out of the room after a 24-hour stay.

Police said that based on an initial investigation, Agudo and Kim were found naked on the bed, both dead from bullet wounds in the head and body.

Police investigators recovered a .25-caliber automatic pistol beside Agudo’s body and five fired cartridge cases on the floor. Macaraeg pointed out that the gun belonged to Agudo based on firearm documents retrieved from his belongings.

“The room was not in disarray and the couple’s belongings were intact,” Macaraeg said, adding that the absence of a means to leave the room other than the door, which had been locked from the inside, discounted the possibility of a third-party involvement.

But Macaraeg stressed that the number of bullet wounds in each of the bodies suggested foul play.â€"With Monalisa Chuang

‘Chedeng’ spares PH, veers toward Japan
By Kristine L. Alave
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:18 am | Friday, May 27th, 2011

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Typhoon “Chedeng” swirled north toward Japan on Thursday, sparing the Philippines from a direct hit.

At least one fatality was reported from the typhoonâ€"Jaime Torillos, 75, who went out to sea to fish in spite of the bad weather on Wednesday, police said. His body was retrieved off Barangay Biong in Gigmoto, Catanduanes province.

Thousands of residents who fled to evacuation centers in the Bicol region returned Thursday to their homes after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) lowered storm warnings.

“By the end of the day, they will have all left for home,” said Bernardo Alejandro, the regional civil defense chief.

Robert Sawi, Pagasa chief forecaster, said a high-pressure ridge dissipated, allowing the typhoon to veer away from the country and head toward Japan.

As of 4 p.m. on Thursday, Chedeng was seen 300 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora province, or 200 km east of Aparri, Cagayan province. The typhoon packed more wallop as it moved northwest at 19 kph with peak winds of 175 kph gusting up to 210 kph.

Pagasa said, however, that rains spawned by the typhoonâ€"the second of the seasonâ€"and the activation of the southwest monsoon were likely to continue until Saturday.

At least 10 flights to and from Samar province and the Bicol region were canceled Thursday.

A total of 5,719 passengers remained stranded for a second day in various ports in Bicol, the Coast Guard reported.

By Thursday noon, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda ordered evacuees to go home, except those living in low-lying areas.

At least 40,000 families had been told to evacuate as a precautionary measure, but the governor said about 16,621 families would remain in evacuation centers in the towns of Libon, Polangui, Oas, Guinobatan and Jovellar.

Salceda also warned against sea travel because of big waves and storm surges.

The departure of Chedeng was welcomed in Ilagan, Isabela, although Gov. Faustino Dy III directed rescue workers and road repair crews to stay at their posts.

Villagers who reside near riverbanks also were told to remain in evacuation centers.

The town resumed preparations for its annual Mammangi Festival and motor racing competitions as the weather improved.

In Baguio City, Cordillera officials maintained rescue teams at strategic sections of the mountain region, the Office of Civil Defense said. With reports from DJ Yap, Jaymee T. Gamil and Tina G. BAREFOOT BAY â€" Paul Cole was in one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century, and yet he wasn't famous.

Cole, a longtime Barefoot Bay resident, died Wednesday in Pensacola at age 96. He is clearly seen in the famous shot of the Beatles walking across London's Abbey Road, used as the front cover of the group's classic 1969 album, "Abbey Road." Over the years, the picture has been reproduced in books, on posters, coffee mugs, T-shirts and hundreds of other places.

The retired salesman is standing on the sidewalk, just behind the Beatles. Gawking at them.

In a 2004 interview with Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, Cole explained how he came to be there at that precise moment.

On a London vacation with his wife, Cole — then a resident of Deerfield Beach — declined to enter a museum on the north London thoroughfare.

"I told her, 'I've seen enough museums. You go on in, take your time and look around and so on, and I'll just stay out here and see what's going on outside,'" he recalled.

Parked just outside was a black police van. "I like to just start talking with people," Cole said. "I walked out, and that cop was sitting there in that police car. I just started carrying on a conversation with him. I was asking him about all kinds of things, about the city of London and the traffic control, things like that. Passing the time of day."

In the picture, Cole is standing next to the police van.

It was 10 a.m., Aug. 8, 1969. Photographer Iain McMillan was on a stepladder in the middle of the street, photographing the four Beatles as they walked, single-file, across Abbey Road, John Lennon in his famous white suit, Paul McCartney without shoes. The entire shoot lasted 10 minutes.

"I just happened to look up, and I saw those guys walking across the street like a line of ducks," Cole remembered. "A bunch of kooks, I called them, because they were rather radical-looking at that time. You didn't walk around in London barefoot."

About a year later, Cole first noticed the "Abbey Road" album on top of the family record player (his wife was learning to play George Harrison's love song "Something" on the organ). He did a double-take when he eyeballed McMillan's photo.

"I had a new sportcoat on, and I had just gotten new shell-rimmed glasses before I left," he says. "I had to convince the kids that that was me for a while. I told them, 'Get the magnifying glass out, kids, and you'll see it's me.'"
