Gov't reviews salaries of GOCC execs
By Iris C. Gonzales (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The Aquino administration is reviewing the compensation structure for heads and executives of government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) who sit in various private corporations in their capacity as GOCC executives, a ranking official said.

According to the new rules, GOCC executives can only receive bonuses, profit shares and other perks from private corporations subject to certain limits. The rest of the amount, beyond limits soon to be set by the GCG, would have to be turned over to the respective GOCC, said Social Security System (SSS) president and chief executive officer Emilio de Quiros Jr.

SSS is one of the agencies covered by the new rules.

The move is part of efforts to prevent abuse by some previous GOCC officials of their position in government.

Phl may borrow $750 M this year
By Iris C. Gonzales (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The National Government is still open to raising the remaining commercial foreign borrowing requirement of $750 million from the external debt market this year, a ranking Finance official said over the weekend.

In an interview, Finance Undersecretary Rosalia de Leon said the Philippines wants to maintain its presence in the offshore market and to take advantage of strong appetite for Philippine debt papers.

“We’re still thinking of doing that because we need to maintain our presence abroad,” she said.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) wants the National Government to just tap the local debt market for its remaining borrowing needs to siphon off excess liquidity in the cash-rich domestic mart.

De Leon said that is also possible but to keep Philippine bonds actively trading in the offshore market, the national government needs to maintain its presence abroad.

by Prinz Magtulis, Philstar.com - The Philippines is the “most underrated country in the world” but any upgrade would have to wait until “significant momentum” in revenue generation and debt reduction is sustained, Moody’s Investors Service said.

Moody’s bond-implied ratings showed the country being rated by the market at Baa1, an investment grade and four notches above Moody’s Ba2 rating for the Philippines.

Bond-implied ratings show the market’s pricing and treatment of a country’s bonds in relation to its actual rating from a particular credit rating agency.

“The markets have already voted the Philippines as an investment grade rating. As you can see, credit rating agencies are now behind the curve,” Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo said during the BSP’s annual media seminar held here.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Saturday urged the Thai public and private sector not to panic or halt investments due to Europe's debt crisis, for she was certain the government could deal with the issue.

The premier spoke during “Yingluck Government Meets the People,” her weekly talk show on state-run television Channel 11.

Panicking as a response to the situation will worsen the Thai economy, she noted. Her administration is ready to launch contingency measures in case of negative scenarios.

She advised Thai entrepreneurs that have businesses in some European countries to reduce their stocks there or look for new markets. The Commerce Ministry is available to provide advice to affected entrepreneurs, she said, while committees are to be set up to monitor and manage likely urgent problems from the eurozone debt crisis.

Ms Yingluck said the Thai economy remains fundamentally strong. Several sectors, such as industrial products, tourism, and agriculture, have seen positive growth, although not very high, as the country has just recovered from last year's flood.

Concerning the country's unemployment rate of over 300,000 persons, the premier said her government has invited relevant persons to discuss the matter and see if the production of labour has occurred according to demand. The employment ratio and the numbers of new graduates are to be analysed for evaluation and finding further solutions, she noted. - source - PNA

by the Bohol Chronicle - Jose Maria Rocha, former city mayor of Tagbilaran, passed away 1:30 in the morning Wednesday. He was 91.

Rocha served as city mayor twice, first in 1980 to 1986 then in 1992 to 1995. He was also a city councilor and likewise served as executive secretary to then President Carlos P. Garcia.

According to relatives of the former mayor, his remains will be laid in state for two days at the Funeraria Gomez so the public can pay their last respects to the deceased public servant.

Rocha is best remembered as one of the pillars of Tagbilaran’s growth who initiated the expansion of the city proper by establishing the “satellite city” concept which now includes the Tagbilaran City Central Public Market, Integrated Bus Terminal, the City Government Center (City Hall) and the business complex of the Island City Mall and other commercial establishments.

Rocha also served the Philippine National Red Cross before his appointment as executive secretary of former President Garcia.

It was through Rocha’s efforts that a modern maternity house, now known as the Tagbilaran Puericulture Center and Maternity House (TPCMH), was built equipped with facilities for maternal care and treatment of patients.

Several former city officials paid tribute to Rocha over “Inyong Alagad” Wednesday stressing his dignity and honor as a public servant and as a private citizen.

In a public notice over Station dyRD, relatives of the deceased former mayor appealed to the public who want to bring flowers to the wake to instead convert the same into donations at the TPCMH.

What if Syrian President Bashar al Assad really goes? There is an assumption in the West that the way to win a strategic victory over Iran and improve the human rights situation inside Syria is to remove the Syrian leader. It is true that Iran's prospects of keeping Syria as its own Mediterranean outpost are probably linked with the survivability of al Assad's regime. But his removal might well hasten the slide into chaos within Syria and in adjacent Lebanon, rather than slow it. Al Assad's departure could even ignite a disintegration of the Syrian power structure into various gangs and militias.

After all, we are talking less of the removal of one man than of the end of a 42-year dynasty. The president's father, Hafez al Assad, came to power in 1970 after 21 changes of government -- mostly through coups -- in Syria's first 24 years of independence. Moreover, the new Syrian state held free and fair elections in 1947, 1949 and 1954 that all broke down according to tribal, regional and sectarian interests. Hafez finally ended the chaos by becoming the Leonid Brezhnev of the Arab world: He staved off the future by institutionalizing fear, even as he did nothing to nurture a civil society out of the country's inherent divisions. Alas, the collapse of such a state is messy business. Sectarian awareness may be less deeply etched in Syria than in Iraq, but once the killing starts people have a tendency to revert to these default identities.

On July 9, thousands of Canadians and hundreds of thousands of people worldwide could be without access to the internet after the FBI shuts down temporary DNS servers used to assist victims of a massive internet fraud ring.

All computers that still use these servers will meet a virtual brick wall on July 9 and be unable to connect to the internet until their computers are cleared of the associated 'DNSChanger' virus.

The shutdown of the temporary DNS servers by U.S. authorities is the last stage in Operation Ghost Click, a two-year international investigation that officially ended in November 2011.

The FBI, in association with international law enforcement, managed to track and apprehend six Estonians using an ostensibly legitimate front company who had organized a sophisticated system of false DNS servers. - source

Guinness World Records has declared that a huge crocodile blamed for deadly attacks in the southern Philippines is the largest in captivity in the world. The giant reptile has brought pride, fear, tourism revenues and attention to the previously little-known town where it was captured last year.

Guinness spokeswoman Anne-Lise Rouse says the saltwater crocodile nicknamed “Lolong” measured 20.24 feet (6.17 meters) and weighed more than a ton. It was captured last November in Bunawan town in Agusan del Sur province,

Bunawan Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde told The Associated Press on Sunday that he was notified by Guinness of the giant reptile’s new distinction last month. The news sparked celebrations in his town of 37,000 people and concerns that more giant crocodiles might be lurking nearby. - from Associated Press

by Mayen Jaymalin, Philstar.com - The Philippines will no longer deploy overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to 15 countries considered as unsafe.

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) chief Hans Cacdac said the POEA governing board has approved a resolution restricting deployment to 15 countries found not compliant with the requirements of the amended Migrant Workers Act starting July 15.

These countries are Afghanistan, Chad, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Haiti, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Nepal, Niger, Palestine, Somalia, Uzbekistan and Zimbabwe.

Cacdac said a copy of the resolution had been published in a national newspaper.

The government imposed a deployment ban in Afghanistan and Lebanon several years ago due to hostilities there.

Cacdac said a total deployment ban remains in effect in Iraq, except in Kurdistan, while the government is undertaking a review.

He said POEA is also awaiting the assessment and recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on the Vatican and Monaco.

“Our post in Monaco and the Vatican have something to look into, but it has nothing to do with the two countries being unsafe, that is why the deployment continues,” Cacdac said.

Bible Study / Life is full of surprises
June 13, 2012, 04:40:53 AM

Our Daily Bread

Life is full of surprisesâ€"some of which take life in unwelcome directions. I still remember the shockwave that hit our family several decades ago when my father lost his job through no fault of his own. With a house full of kids to feed, it was a jarring blow. But as certainly as Dad’s job loss was beyond his control and unexpected, he still knew he could trust God for his future.

As Jesus’ followers, we must recognize that there are things in life that are the “uncontrollable unexpected,” as I call them. To help us in those moments, James 4:13-15 offers this wisdom: “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. . . . Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’ ” The people to whom James was writing were making plans while excluding God’s prerogative to direct their lives.

Is it wrong to plan for the future? Of course not. It is unwise, however, to forget that God may allow some “uncontrollable unexpected” events as He sees fit. Ultimately, all that happens is for the bestâ€"even when it’s hard to see. We must trust Him and His plans for our future.

I know who holds the future,
And I know who holds my hand;
With God things don’t just happenâ€"
Everything by Him is planned. â€"A. Smith

We may not know what the future holds, but we can trust the One who holds the future.

Bible Study / To Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
June 13, 2012, 04:38:14 AM
by Dave Branon
Our Daily Bread

While working with third- and fourth-graders at our church’s Vacation Bible School, I decided to give all 25 of the children a gift on the last day. But I told them that in order to receive it, they would each have to tell me how a person can get to heaven.

It was interesting to hear what these 9- and 10-year-olds said. Many were clear that salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ, but some were not yet equipped to explain the gospel. “You have to be good and go to Sunday school,” said one. Another asked tentatively, “You have to pray to God?” Still another: “If you are nice to your friends and obey your mom and dad.”

As I gently tried to direct the thinking of each child to the central element of salvationâ€"faith in Jesus who died to pay for our sins and then rose againâ€"I thought that these kids represented so many others in our world who don’t yet understand the gospel.

How about you? Are your ideas about salvation based on biblical truth? Think about the importance of what Jesus did for you. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 16:31). There is so much more at stake than getting a free gift for answering a question.

A Matter Of Faith
Jesus paid the penalty for your sins by His death. When
you admit you are a sinner and place your faith in Him
alone for forgiveness, you will be reconciled to God.

Believing Christ diedâ€"that’s history; believing Christ died for meâ€"that’s salvation.

Our Daily Bread

Are parents trying too hard to make their kids happy? And is that having the opposite effect? These questions introduce an interview with Lori Gottlieb, author of an article on the subject of unhappy young adults. Her conclusion: Yes. Parents who refuse to let their children experience failure or sadness give them a false view of the world and do not prepare them for the harsh realities of adult life. They’re left feeling empty and anxious.

Some Christians expect that the Lord will be the kind of parent who protects them from all sorrow and disappointment. But that’s not the kind of Father He is. He lovingly allows His children to go through suffering (Isa. 43:2; 1 Thess. 3:3).

When we start with the mistaken belief that it’s an easy life that will make us truly happy, we become weary trying to live out our faulty belief. But when we face the truth that life is difficult, we can invest our lives in the pursuit of a good and godly life instead. That kind of life strengthens us for the times when life is difficult.

God’s goal is to make us holy, not just happy (1 Thess. 3:13). And when we are holy, we are more likely to be truly happy and content.
Must I be carried to the skies

While others fought to win the prize,
And sailed through bloody seas? â€"Watts

One of my biggest struggles is unanswered prayer. Maybe you can relate. You ask God to rescue a friend from addiction, to grant salvation to a loved one, to heal a sick child, to mend a relationship. All these things you think must be God’s will. For years you pray. But you hear nothing back from Him and you see no results.

You remind the Lord that He’s powerful. That your request is a good thing. You plead. You wait. You doubtâ€"maybe He doesn’t hear you, or maybe He isn’t so powerful after all. You quit askingâ€"for days or months. You feel guilty about doubting. You remember that God wants you to take your needs to Him, and you tell Him your requests again.

We may sometimes feel we’re like the persistent widow in Jesus’ parable recorded in Luke 18. She keeps coming to the judge, badgering him and trying to wear him down so he’ll give in. But we know that God is kinder and more powerful than the judge in the parable. We trust Him, for He is good and wise and sovereign. We remember that Jesus said we “always ought to pray and not lose heart” (v.1).

So we ask Him, “Summon Your power, O God; show us Your strength, O God, as You have done before” (Ps. 68:28 NIV). And then we trust Him . . . and wait.
Pray on, then, child of God, pray on;
This is your duty and your task.
To God the answering belongs;
Yours is the simpler partâ€"to ask. â€"Chisholm

Delay is not denial so keep praying.

Many high school students with autism or Down syndrome feel excluded and ignored. They often eat alone in a crowded cafeteria because other students don’t know how to relate to them or simply don’t care. To address this need, speech therapist Barbara Palilis began “Circle of Friends”â€"a program that pairs students with disabilities with nondisabled peers for lunch dates and social activities. Through this outreach, special-needs students and those nondisabled peers who befriend them continue to be enriched and changed through the gift of acceptance, friendship, and understanding.

Being included is at the heart of the gospel of Christ. “God, who is rich in mercy, . . . even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)” (Eph. 2:4-5). Through faith in Christ, we “who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (v.13).

Our privileged place as members of the “household of God” (v.19) should give us eyes to see and hearts to care for those around us who are ignored and alone. If each of us would reach out in caring friendship to one person today, what a difference it would make for us all.
I needed help. Someone came alongside,
Sent by our Savior to care and to guide.
I now help you. We know that He is there,
Loving us both, and extending His care. â€"Verway

Male peacocks are resplendent creatures with iridescent blue-green plumage and elongated trains tipped with “eyes” colored in hues of gold, red, and blue. They are strikingly beautiful birds, but they have ugly feet!

To be honest, most of us have some type of physical limitation. It may be something we’ve borne all our lives or one we’ve recently acquired.

Paul described his deficiency as a “thorn in the flesh” that kept him humble (2 Cor. 12:7-9). Three times he asked the Lord to remove it, probably thinking that he could then serve God better. But the Lord assured him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Paul replied, “Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

One of the ironies of faith is that God often chooses us to accomplish His most important tasks despite our imperfections, not because of our speaking ability, looks, or fitness for the task. Missionary Hudson Taylor said, “God was looking for someone weak enough to use, and he found [you and me]!” When we find our strength in Him, He can use us in ways we could never imagine (v.9).

Lord, I have many weaknesses. Please show Your
strength through me by using me in whatever way
You please. May others see You at work in me and
praise Your name. Amen
.

God’s strength is best seen in our weakness.

"Bohol: Heart of the Islands, Truly Philippines" campaign in full blast
By Lily O Ramos

Remember nature's most wondrous 1,268 big mounds of limestone in Carmen called Chocolate Hills and the tiny but saucer-eyed monkey called tarsier whom every visitor in Bohol wants to cuddle once the primate shows up?

These makes it more fun in Bohol as a prime tourist destination

This is the reason why Governor Edgardo M. Chatto has launched a new campaign "Bohol: Heart the Islands, Truly Philippines."

What about the cool brooks, streams and rivers like Loboc river and Busay falls that seem to sing at the foot of the mountains and hills that gently spread like sparkling jewels in the morning sun?

How about sighting the playful and showboating dolphins in Pamilacan island which seem to have become their natural habitat?

Pamilacan in the Bohol Sea used to be fishermen's haven as they caught variety of fishes endlessly, including today's tourist favorites -- dolphins.

But having realized the importance of keeping the balance of nature by caring for the environment and its different marine lives, the locals have turned as tour guides, dolphin spotters and nature for their daily needs.

These are other attractions Bohol can show the awed world, said Gov. Chatto, who added that the province is also entwined with history.

Chatto spoke of Baclayon Church, the Philippines' second oldest church built in 1595 but was only finished in 1717 from coral stones cut in squares then welded together so closely with millions of egg whites that lasted for centuries!

It has a museum which holds intact, fully preserved religious artifacts in the 1600s, baptismal and marriage records since the Spaniards conquered the countryside and music sheets from carabao skin.

Chatto also explained that Bohol is as authentically Filipino as it can get by promoting old, old traditions and beliefs of our ancestors.

However, the natives preserved the traditions brought particularly by the Spanish colonizers, Chinese, Americans and European people who landed our shores as merchants and traders.

“As a nation, Philippine tourism is in search of its own identity because our local culture is a complex mix of many different cultures,” said Chatto.

“Bohol and its people have a certain respect and appreciation for heritage and tradition, this is why we have come up with this campaign to highlight the captivating charm that Bohol exudes and the heartwarming hospitality offered by Boholanos themselves,” he told invited mediamen.

Chatto said the new campaign brand is the handiwork of the Provincial Government of Bohol, in partnership with the province’s tourism stakeholders led by the Provincial Tourism Council, and the Philippine Bohol Arts Foundation Institute (PBAFI) to showcase the rich historical and cultural backdrop of "Bohol: Heart the Islands, Truly Philippines."

The body is 70-75 percent made up of water.

It aids in digestion, absorption, transport, and utilization of electrolytes and other nutrients.  It also helps maintain body temperature and excretes waste products from the lungs, skin, and kidneys. Furthermore, it is considered as the most essential of all nutrients.

Our body needs to be sufficiently supplied with water to replace the loss of water in urine, sweat, perspiration, feces, as well as through other body processes that cannot be seen.  Not supplying enough water in the body can affect bodily function and can lead to dehydration and also even to death.  With this, it is just right to say that "water gives life" or without water there could be no life."

Drinking only when thirsty is not good.  Fluid replacement should be a daily plan.

The daily fluid requirements will vary with the environmental conditions, clothing, intensity, and duration of exercise, and other activities.

Based on the 2000 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos developed by a technical working group led by the Food and Nutrition Research
Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), water or fluid requirement ranges from 10 milliliters per kilogram (ml/kg) of body weight for infants to 25 ml/kg body weight for adults which is about three glasses of fluids for infants and six to eight glasses for adults.

Fluids can also come from fruits, vegetables, and other beverages like fruit juices, fortified drinks and flavored sports drink, which provide additional vitamins, especially vitamin C.

Let her know how much she means this Mother’s Day in the sweetest way
By MAAN D’ASIS PAMARAN
Manila Bulletin

MANILA, Philippines â€" Naughty kids would often tell their cohorts â€" “Don’t tell mom!” But experts say that if there is one thing that everyone should tell their moms, it should be the three words “I Love You”. It may be very hard for many grownups to say this line, though, says Coach Pia Acevedo of the Love Institute. “That happens when they were not used to saying it or hearing it as kids. According to the book by Gary Chapman, there are five love languages, and Words of Affirmation is one of them. Parents may have brought up their children using the other love languages, which are Quality Time, Service, Physical Touch, and Gift-Giving. Everyone should experience love 360 degrees.” She adds that in general, Filipinos have a hard time telling their parents they love them. “In Asian countries, people are more reserved and conservative. Children show their love through Service,” she points out.

But those words must be said, rather than regret not doing it later on. That is why Swiss chocolate brand Toblerone has launched a cool campaign to make it easier for Pinoys to tell their moms "I Love You" for the whole wide web world to see.  At the Toblerone press launch, guest celebrities RJ Jacinto, Jessica Tan Gan, Georgia Schulze-Del Rosario, and event host RJ Ledesma, were all surprised by the appearance of their gorgeous moms at the event. They were even more surprised when they were handed special Toblerone boxes which had their Mom and Me photos inside.

Each celebrity mom (Fortune Ledesma, Ces Schulze, Frannie Jacinto, and Lulu Tan Gan) was the tearful recipient of the “L” word, as their children shared in their heartfelt messages how much they cherish their relationships.

The lovefest does not stop there, of course. This Mother’s Day, the uniquely-shaped Toblerone chocolates might as well be Love Triangles, as they give Filipinos the opportunity to tell the world how much they heart their moms and win awesome prizes at the same time. To join the Toblerone online photo contest, simply “like” the TobleronePilipinas Facebook page and upload your sweetest photo with your mom.

The chocolate company will be awarding 50 weekly winners up to May 18th a 100g Toblerone bar each; major weekly winners get an overnight stay for two at Shangri-La Edsa, and an overnight stay for four at a Hotel H20 Aquarium Room with Spa, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner for the grand prize.

WonderGel is the most advanced cushioning material available today. Made from an ultra-modern copolymer, WonderGel provides comfortable support while eliminating pressure spikes. This lets you sit hours longer in oh-so-wonderful comfort. Cushions made with traditional or memory foam create "push-back", so that if you need to sit for more than a few minutes, you may experience discomfort. Long-lasting and durable WonderGel cushioning uses the ingenious principle of column buckling. As pressure increases, WonderGel columns buckle, distributing the weight to neighboring columns. This virtually eliminates uncomfortable pressure points.

WonderGel provides immediate, continuous cushioning - no need to wait for foam to heat up or conform to your body every time you change position. The result: a truly revolutionary advance in cushioning technology that provides the ultimate cushioning experience. WonderGel was created by our cushioning scientists whose unique, patented cushioning materials have been used in leading brand of footwear, mattresses, medical products, sporting goods, and industrial protection products.

Expert Answers on Workplace Bullying
By Gary Namie, PhD

Bullying at work is defined as repeated, health-endangering mistreatment; it's not simple rudeness or "incivility." It's driven by a perpetrator working his agenda -- namely, the need to control others in ways that actually prevent work from getting done. Bullying is irrational and indefensible, but is so common that it affects one in six workers. In response to a popular, two-part series on workplace bullying, here are answers to some of Monster users' most frequently asked questions on the subject.

Why are bullies the way they are?

Evolution, genetics and lousy childhood experiences can account for the worst offenders. But the majority are soccer moms and church deacons -- normal people like us. So, don't waste time ruminating about the bully's motivation. The three-part recipe for bullying can happen in any size workplace, any type of business:

The employer creates cutthroat, competitive opportunities, forcing people to fight over scarce resources, such as budget, time and status.

Folks with a tendency to exploit and manipulate others see and capitalize on those chances.

Hyperaggressive bullies win the rewards and goodies while the rest of us "lose." Over time, the workplace becomes prone to bullying.

Why do HR and management always side with the bullies?

HR works for management; it is not an advocate for workers. In worst cases, HR even coaches the bullying manager (71 percent of bullies are bosses) on how to document into oblivion an objectively well-performing worker. The bully's boss gives great support to the bully, probably because he hired the bully to clean up the unit or liked the bully's aggression. Yet bullies are counterproductive and too expensive to keep. The company pays with turnover, absenteeism and other costs associated with a chronically stressed, fear-plagued "worst place to work."

Why do targets always end up the losers?

No one believes them. Coworkers rarely help, out of an imagined fear about their own safety. When targets do complain after some time passes (an average of 22 months), the higher-ups don't want to believe that the managers they adore could have done the hurtful things ascribed to them. In his Senate confirmation hearings to be UN ambassador, John Bolton was described by a former State Department colleague as a "kiss-up, kick-down kind of guy." Kissing up, or ingratiation, works to protect bullies when they're exposed. The lone bullied target is branded a "troublemaker" and pays the price by losing his job in seven out of 10 cases. Bullies win thanks and support from the top, while targets are driven out. Targets lose the war but are not losers. Once they're out of the crosshairs of the person gunning for them and are safe in the next job, they can resume their normal lives.

What can job seekers do to make sure that being bullied doesn't become a pattern?

First, take an assertive approach when interviewing for your next job. Before you accept it, ask some or all of the following questions: Why is the job open? How do I contact the last person who held this position? What's the turnover rate in this department? How does the company ensure respectful treatment? What happens to convicted harassers? What gets a person labeled as a troublemaker here? Do you conduct 360-degree evaluations, and what do you do with the information? Is there a budget for staff and management training to upgrade skills?

Second, make some lifestyle changes. You are not to blame for being targeted by the bully. However, the bully's impact on you is magnified by a couple of your own positive, personal traits. Limit your emotional investment in your job to the level the company reciprocates. Your self-identity depends on a lot more than a job. Curb your perfectionism that leads to unmet expectations and triggers righteous indignation. Establish more rigid personal psychological boundaries so that outsiders who inflict harm cannot get inside your head to redefine you as someone you are not. (Bullies lie to targets to convince them they are incompetent.) They have no business inside your head or influencing your friends. Tell people with destructive opinions of you to keep quiet. Reserve personal space for your trusted intimates; don't let in jerks at work.

He is an anti-bullying advocate and frequent media commentator whose appearances have included the "Today" show and "Good Morning America." He is also principal consultant for The Work Doctor and established BullyBusters.]

Seven Job Search Mistakes New Grads Make
By Caroline M.L. Potter

For the last few years, college seniors have been graduating into a soft job market. A weak economy means fewer opportunities -- and greater competition for every single opening.

"In today's employment environment, there is less room for error when looking for your first career opportunity," says Max Messmer, chairman of Accountemps.

Don't let one of the following seven missteps cost you the career of your undergraduate dreams.

1. Keeping It to Yourself

When you're looking for work, you want your burgeoning network to know it. "Spread the word about your job hunt to everyone you know, including family members, friends, professors and former coworkers," says Messmer, author of Job Hunting for Dummies. "Make use of online networking sites and reach out to your local business community and staffing firms."

2. Treating Every Opportunity Equally

One resume does not fit every job opening, so don't use the same document or stock cover letter when you apply to different companies. "Tailor each resume and cover letter to the particular opportunity, and try to obtain the name of the hiring manager so you can personalize your cover letter," Messmer says. "A little detective work can go a long way in helping you stand out."

3. Making Careless Errors

Proofread, proofread, proofread. Every document you send to a potential employer must be error-free. Go through your resume, cover letter, emails, thank-you notes and any other communication with a fine-tooth comb to make certain they don't contain typos or grammatical errors. If you're not a grammar guru or lack an eagle eye, "ask a detail-oriented friend to review all of your job search materials," Messmer suggests

4. Skipping the Due Diligence

When applying for a position, go beyond the job description to find out about the company as a whole. A little company research can go a long way, according to Messmer. "Applicants who uncover beyond-the-basics knowledge of the job and the company…are better able to communicate specific ways they can contribute to the organization's success," he says.

5. Airing Your Dirty Laundry

Before you meet someone in the flesh, online image is everything. Pictures of you goofing around with friends may seem funny, but they also may lead a recruiter to question your judgment, especially if the photos are salacious in nature or show you doing things that are illegal.

"Don't post anything that would appear unprofessional [think spring break photos, rants about a former employer, etc.] to a hiring manager or recruiter," Messmer says.

6. Acting Casual

Once you begin your job search, make certain that you're acting like the professional you aspire to be. "Keep land-line and cellphone voice-mail greetings clear, professional and succinct," Messmer says. "Likewise, avoid using off-color or overly cute email addresses or signatures."

7. Forgetting Your Manners

You probably won't get every job you pursue, but it is important to be gracious to everyone you encounter on your journey to employment. "Express appreciation to everyone who helps you in your job search, whether or not their efforts on your behalf are successful," he says. "Also be sure to send thank-you notes to every hiring manager you meet."

After the Interview: Four Ways to Follow Up
By Margaret Steen

You had your interview, and the way it ended left you hopeful. Now comes what is often the most agonizing part of the job hunt: waiting for the hiring manager to call. But you still have some control over the process. Experts offer the following advice on maximizing your chances for success:

Send Thank-You Notes

Don't stress too much over whether your interview thank-you letter is emailed or handwritten. The most important thing is to send it.

"Even if you think you've got it in the bag, there are people who expect that letter," says Laura DeCarlo, president of Career Directors International, a global professional association of resume writers and career coaches.

The kind of note to send depends on the situation. Peggy McKee, founder of Career Confidential, prefers thank-you emails sent within a day of the interview. "A quick follow-up indicates interest," McKee says.

But consider the company culture when following up. Sometimes a mailed letter will be more appropriate -- for instance, if the company is an old-fashioned, traditional one. But if you're applying for something like a social media marketing position, then email your follow-up note.

Your post-interview thank-you letter should be "a typical sales letter" with three parts, DeCarlo says: Thank the interviewer. Reiterate why you're a good fit. Close by saying you're looking forward to the next step. Even if you send the note by mail, you may prefer to type it so you have room to make your case.

Break Through the Silence

The interviewer said she'd let you know by Tuesday if you made it to the next round of interviews. It's now Thursday, and you haven't heard anything. What's going on? It's possible you didn't make the cut. But it's equally likely that the interviewer just got busy.

What should you do next? Call or email. If you don't get a reply in a few days, try again. Yes, you might occasionally annoy a frazzled hiring manager. But as long as your messages are polite and brief, most interviewers are more likely to be impressed by your perseverance, communication skills and interest in the job.

"Candidates need to quit worrying about how they're perceived and be more worried about making people see how they can contribute to the organization," McKee says.

The key is to keep your messages positive. Don't sound accusatory -- just remind the interviewer of your conversation, say you enjoyed it and ask where they are in the process. It may help to prepare a script ahead of time.

Go into Recovery Mode

Perhaps you feel that you didn't make the best impression in the interview. The follow-up is your chance to recover.

"Tell them you're going to provide them with additional resources," McKee says. If you can send documentation of your abilities -- or even get references to send notes on your behalf -- do so.

But if your reason for thinking you blew the interview is something minor, like spilling your coffee, ignore it. "If you draw attention to your embarrassment about little things, it might lead the person to think you're too insecure," DeCarlo explains.

Bounce Back from Rejection

When you hear from an interviewer but the news is bad, what should you do?

First, "thank the person for letting you know," DeCarlo says. Then ask if the interviewer would be willing to give you any feedback that you could use for future interviews. The answer will likely be no, but it shows you're interested in improving.

Then keep networking with the interviewer, perhaps by forwarding occasional, well-chosen articles related to your industry, for example, or by joining a group on LinkedIn.

By Kim Isaacs, Monster Resume Expert

If you’re an experienced worker, you might be considering dumbing down your resume to land an interview for a position for which you might seem overqualified. This strategy could include downplaying or omitting work experience, resume skills, degrees and other credentials. But is reworking your resume in this manner a wise thing to do? Employment experts weigh in with their advice.

Special Circumstances Can Warrant It

Tracy Parish, a certified professional resume writer and president of resume-writing firm CareerPlan in Kewanee, Illinois, has encountered situations when dumbing down the resume can work. “Obviously, a person needs to keep bread on the table, so accepting a lower position is becoming more common and the resume needs to be appropriately tailored,” she says.

While you don’t have to include everything you’ve ever done on your resume, don’t cross the line into dishonesty. “Never lie,” Parish says. “It will come back to haunt you.” If you decide to omit some of your credentials on your resume, you still must provide a thorough account on a job application. A resume is a strategic marketing piece, whereas a job application is a signed, legal document that requires full disclosure.

What Are the Risks?

“Job seekers should think carefully before dumbing down their resumes,” says Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam, a staffing agency based in Menlo Park, California. “Employers can easily learn about job seekers’ work histories, education and credentials online or through references, so they should be truthful.”

“We do not recommend that job seekers hide relevant information,” says Carrie Stone, a former Disney executive and current president of cStone & Associates, an executive search and leadership consulting firm in San Diego. “If job seekers misrepresent credentials, they are seen as dishonest and employers will question their integrity.”

William Finlay, PhD, professor of sociology at the University of Georgia and coauthor of Headhunters: Matchmaking in the Labor Market, also agrees that job seekers shouldn’t dumb down their resumes. “Misrepresentation, if it is discovered, is a deal breaker because it calls the candidate’s honesty into question,” he says.

Overqualified Workers May Have an Edge

Finlay’s research suggests some good news for job seekers who are willing to accept lower-level positions but are concerned about being perceived as overqualified. “We may be entering an era in which being overqualified is no longer a liability,” he says. “A generation ago, a college degree became a requirement for jobs that previously required only a high school diploma. Now, we are seeing evidence of people with JDs and MBAs being hired for jobs that previously would have gone to people with undergraduate degrees.”

Stone has seen this trend in her recruiting career as well. “Previously, employers may have been concerned about hiring overqualified individuals, fearing that when the economy rebounds these employees may leave for other opportunities,” she says. “Since we are not seeing a robust rebound in the market, savvy employers are hiring these overqualified employees while achieving value pricing.”

Smarter Strategies

Parish, who agrees that dumbing down the resume is generally not a good idea, says job seekers should shoot for the stars. “If experienced workers are armed with an extraordinary resume and launch an aggressive job search, they could find their ideal jobs and won’t have to settle,” she says.

Here are three strategies for experienced job seekers who don’t want to dumb down their resumes:

Customize: “A resume needs to be custom-designed, highly targeted and well above average to gain interest,” Parish says. Include a targeted resume title so employers understand your career goal, followed by a qualifications summary that provides an overview of your value.

Summarize: “It’s perfectly fine to omit details that aren’t relevant to the position you are applying for,” Hosking says. “For example, you don’t need to include a job you held in high school 40 years ago or expound on a job in another field that isn’t relevant to the position you’re seeking.” Parish recommends detailing only the past 10 to 15 years of your employment history, and relegating older employment to an “Additional Experience” or “Early Career” section at the bottom. Unrelated degrees or specialized training can be downplayed or eliminated as long as they are appropriately listed on an application form, she says.

Overcome Objections: Stone says job seekers should anticipate objections employers might have, and use the cover letter to address how age and experience can be a tremendous asset to the organization. “Seek to understand employers’ concerns and then sell around those concerns with brevity, clarity and confidence,” she says.
