The health benefits of turmeric are plentiful, and have even been proven to be more effective than some medications to treat cholesterol, inflammation against tumor cells, and diabetes.

Turmeric is part of the ginger family and is commonly found in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian cuisines, such as Indian curry. It’s also used in Chinese medicine.

The spice is found to be healthy because it contains a high dose of curcumin, an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.

Studies have found that turmeric can be a substitute for some drugs. Researchers have found that it can help treat chronic hepatitis, colorectal cancer, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Therefore, patients taking Lipitor or Atorvastatin for cholesterol, Oxaliplatin for chemotherapy, Metformin for diabetes, or antiviral medicine for hepatitis might be able to lessen their doses or even replace their prescription medications with turmeric.

Turmeric is also known to fight free radicals and can reduce or prevent damage internally and externally to the body.

Charles and his wife Camilla are to meet Xi and Peng at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Tuesday, before travelling to a ceremonial welcome and lunch at Buckingham Palace.

Xi and Peng will then be guests at Clarence House for tea, the spokeswoman said.

The state banquet will take place later that day, with leader of the opposition Labour party Jeremy Corbyn among those attending.

A spokesman for the left-wing campaigner did not rule out the possibility he could raise concerns about China's human rights record at the dinner.

"He will be raising issues about human rights next week," the spokesman said, adding that Corbyn would prefer to broach the topic in private discussions and was seeking to meet Beijing representatives separately.

"We are always concerned that the government doesn't raise human rights issues as well as it should," the spokesman added.

The visit by Xi comes as Britain strives to strengthen ties with Beijing and build business links with the world's second-largest economy.

It follows a trip to China by British finance minister George Osborne last month, during which he said Britain should be China's "best partner in the West".

Diplomatic relations between the two states had cooled in 2012, when British Prime Minister David Cameron met with the Dalai Lama in London.

The Prince of Wales will hold "one-to-one talks" with the president but will not attend the banquet, to be hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Charles is a supporter of the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader whom China views as a dangerous separatist.

The prince was accused of boycotting a Chinese state visit to Britain in 1999, when he failed to attend a banquet hosted for Jiang Zemin, who was then Chinese president.

A former private secretary to Charles, Mark Bolland, described it as "a deliberate snub" in a court statement in 2006.

"He did not approve of the Chinese regime, and is a great supporter of the Dalai Lama, whom he views as being oppressed by the Chinese," Bolland said.

Charles also described Chinese leaders as "appalling old waxworks" in journal writings about the 1997 transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from Britain to China. The jibes were later published in the press.

A statement from his official residence, Clarence House, emphasised that Charles would spend ample time with Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan during the trip, which begins on October 20.

"The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have significant involvement in the state visit by the president of the People's Republic of China," a Clarence House spokeswoman said.

- Rushdie weighs in -

"I think what's crept into Indian life now is a degree of thuggish violence, which is new," Indian-born author Salman Rushdie told the NDTV network.

"And it seems to be, I have to say, given permission by the silence of official bodies... by the silence of the prime minister's office.

"Modi is a very talkative gentleman, he has a lot to say on a lot of subjects and it would be very good to hear what he has to say about all this," added the British-based Booker prize winner who endorsed Sahgal's move to return her Sahitya Akademi award.

On Wednesday, Modi broke his silence over the killing of an alleged beef-eater in the volatile state of Uttar Pradesh, describing the September 28 incident as "unfortunate".

But the premier in the same interview with a local newspaper, also accused the opposition, not the BJP, of polarising the issue along communal lines.

Modi's appeal last week for peace between Hindus and Muslims, without specifically referring to any incident, sparked criticism that more was needed from the premier in the wake of the lynching.

Sharma's response to the criticism is that law and order is the responsibility of state governments and accusations that Modi's government is partly to blame says more about the political leanings of its critics.

"Before this government came, there were many high-profile murders, incidents, and riots and none of these people said anything. So you have to ask yourself why they are only raising it now?"
#5545
The government has also been accused of appointing Hindu nationalists to prominent education and cultural positions, including chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India.

Sharma, who is a close confidant of Modi, insisted the government would only tolerate protest that fell within "the democratic framework of our constitution", and condemned the murder in Karnataka.

"As a minister, as a person, even if a single person is killed in any part of the country it pains us," he told AFP at his New Delhi office.

"We criticise it in the strongest possible words. It should not happen."

But asked to specifically condemn this week's ink attack in Mumbai, carried out during the launch of a book by a former Pakistan foreign minister, Sharma would only respond: "It should be (a) democratic protest."

Several senior BJP members who are outside Modi's inner circle have voiced disquiet at recent events, with former deputy prime minister Lal Krishna Advani condemning "increases in cases of intolerance".

Modi, a prolific Twitter user, has drawn widespread flak for either remaining uncharacteristically silent or being conspicuously slow to react to the acts of violence.

- 'Not My India' -

The killing of a leading rationalist author in the southern state of Karnataka in August sent a shiver down writers' spines, while the recent lynching of a Muslim accused of eating beef caused further deep unease.

Police have detained for questioning several Hindu activists for applauding writer MM Kalburgi's murder.

"I cannot accept, leave aside understand, that in my country scholars are murdered because they have campaigned against religious superstition or because they've criticised Hindu idol worship," the prominent television journalist Karan Thapar wrote recently in The Hindustan Times.

"And I'm appalled that a man is barbarically battered to death for eating beef or possessing it in his fridge. This is not my India. It can never be. And, yet, it is," Thapar said.

Comments by Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma pledging to cleanse India of "cultural pollution" from the West, and that the Bible and Koran are "not central to the soul of India" in the same way as Hindu holy books, have fuelled fears that the country is being run by religious ideologues.
#5547
The 88-year-old niece of India's first premier Jawaharlal Nehru caused a storm earlier this month when she handed back her 'Sahitya Akademi Award' which is bestowed by the government to honour India's leading writers.

More than a dozen writers from across the country have since followed suit, several of them saying they were protesting the "rising culture of intolerance" since the right-wing Modi won a landslide election last year.

India's overwhelmingly left-leaning cultural elite has never been a fan of Modi or his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has an unashamedly Hindu nationalist agenda.

But while there was an uneasy truce between the two sides during Modi's first year in office, a series of recent episodes have prompted many to warn of a major threat to India's cultural and religious pluralism.

When a gang of thugs ambushed a Mumbai book launch by dousing the compere in ink, India's literati saw the attack as yet another blot on the country's reputation for tolerance since Narendra Modi came to power.

"Such attacks may have happened earlier too but this time it's different," said celebrated writer and historian Nayantara Sahgal, following Monday's incident.

"Now the ruling ideology is Hindutva, which, in a classic fascist tactic, demands that all Indians think alike," Sahgal told AFP.

Police in Russian far east have shot dead a wild bear that wandered around a closed shopping mall.

The bear entered the mall in Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border on Tuesday night and barged out of a door.

Police then shot it dead in the playground of a school before a veterinary worker arrived.

Government investigators said (in Russian) that they have now opened an inquiry, after "numerous requests" to do so, into why the animal was killed.

Security camera footage showed the bear running through empty corridors before pushing two doors open to escape.

It is then shot dead by a camouflaged officer after running away from the mall.

"The police did what was simplest," Natalia Kovalenko, an animal rights activist was quoted as saying by the state-run Vesti.ru website (in Russian).

"First they made it crazy by smoking it out of the mall, then when the animal came out and was defending itself out of fear, they shot it."

Tass, another state-run news agency, said bears were increasingly wandering into towns to seek food before they hibernate in November.

It said some 60 bears "posing a threat to humans" have been killed this year. Two people have been killed and four injured in bear attacks, it said.

History / Re: Herring Aid
October 13, 2015, 04:15:02 PM
If you imagine a fish’s digestive system as one long tube, the stomach would look like a little pouch. The pyloric caeca, just behind the stomach, looks like the digestive tube grew a beard. It has a long shaggy fringe of fleshy protrusions. The small “hairs” of this fringe secrete digestive enzymes. They turn the crunchy parts of the small crustaceans that the fish eat red and soft. They activate the pancreatic enzyme trypsin, which breaks down proteins. And when they’re left in a dead fish, and then brine is added, those enzymes cause the salted fish to partially digest itself.

Sounds disgusting, tastes greatâ€"or at least great compared to regular salted fish. The process, called ripening, not only made the fish taste richer than other herring, it allowed the fish to keep longer than merely salted fish. This was not a minor accomplishment. It allowed the people in what is now The Netherlands to take over an international market by making the best-tasting staple food around, along with building bigger, more-specialized ships that went after shoals of herring far off shore and processed them on the boat.

These huge vessels were the first floating factories, making a hugely lucrative and widely-distributed product. What’s more, the processed food allowed nations everywhere to undertake longer journeys with more reliable provisions. Processed herring, the result of a tiny advance in chemistry, launched a nation, helped people travel the world, and changed history.

How Fish Guts Launched an International Empire

These days, it’s a luxury (and often a goal) to eat local. A few hundred years ago, it was a necessity. One country found a way to break free of local, seasonal eating and that discovery changed the world.

You like herring? Even if the answer is no, you probably like it more than starving to death. You’d gnaw on a salted herring if that was the only possible way of getting through a winter. In this, you’re no different from a medieval peasant. Brined herring was a staple of coastal cities all through Europe in the Middle Ages. You had to be careful with it, though. The fish had to be hauled in fresh to be preserved safely, and even then it wouldn’t keep forever.

We don’t know who invented a new way of processing fish, but we think it was someone in the 14th century, who didn’t gut the fish the right way. Instead of removing all the entrails, the fish had a portion of the pyloric caeca and the pancreas left inside it when it was put in the brine.

Most cats, by comparison, enjoy a different type of existence, overall. They are a one of a kind species, in that they are the only domestic animal that humans have not found a way to enslave. We keep them in our homes for companionship, mainly, and if we’re lucky, they’ll keep the mice away. Cats were worshiped as gods back in ancient Egypt, and it seems as though they still hold on to a bit of that nobility. Today most cats, even house pets, manage to enjoy some level of independence in their lives. How ironic then, that the independent cat in this photo is choosing to spend its day giving love to cows!

Studies have shown cows to be highly intelligent creatures with excellent problem-solving abilities, complex social structures and a deeply emotional connection to the world around them. Cows have excellent memories and reach out for the love of their human handlers. They too were considered sacred among the ancients. While the Hindu people once found them divine because of their docile dispositions and willingness to share milk, they are now being exploited for those very same qualities.

This photo of the sweet cat offering the cows some love shows us that that these two very different species are not that different when it comes to the need to be loved. The sad reality, however, is that the cat will possibly live out her life experiencing the love and respect of human beings and the dairy cows will be used as nothing more than a commodity.

The Sanskrit word Namaste means “I bow to you” and is more commonly translated to mean “the divine light in me recognizes the divine light in you.” This wise feline shows this principle in action, recognizing the dairy cow’s right to love and offering it to them. If only more humans behaved this way, what a wonderful world it would be.

This Sweet Photo of a Cat With Dairy Cows Captures a Heartbreaking Truth About Humans

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes it asks a thousand questions, too. Like this picture, taken at a dairy farm in Granby, Quebec. Canada.

Modern industrial agriculture, which is dominated by factory farms is so far removed from actual farming, that even including the word “farm” to describe it is a misnomer. Unlike actual farms, most of the animals living in today’s meat factories never get to see the grass or the sun. From the time, they are born they are removed from their mothers and deprived of even the most basic expressions of love. They grow up indoors in warehouses or in crowded, muddy runs, living their whole lives chained and standing in puddles of their own filth, literally waiting to die. If they are lucky, they will be fed a reasonably nutritious diet before being shipped off to slaughter, while the unlucky ones will be fed fillers, hormones, antibiotics and even the dead remains of their own kind.

Dairy cows have the added indignity of being artificially inseminated, experiencing pregnancy and anticipating motherhood over and over again, only to have their calves taken away after birth. There is nothing farm-like about it. It is a gruesome expression of the human dominance that is destroying this planet.
