This congressman was on the chopping block because he was an outspoken leftist (ie. considerered moderate in most other countries).  Right wing politicians have been caught doing far worse and they get away with it.

I am ignorant of American politics so I will skip that one and would rather direct the reader's fancy to the metaphor of the chopping block and what, in this congressman's case, is being chopped off...

MOSCOW â€" Forty-four people were killed when a passenger jet crashed late Monday in northwestern Russia, news agencies said.

RIA Novosti and ITAR-Tass, citing Emergencies Ministry officials, reported that the RusAir plane crash-landed on a highway en route from Moscow to the city of Petrozavodsk. They reported eight people who survived the crash were hospitalized in critical condition in Petrozavodsk.

There was no immediate explanation for the crash, but the Interfax news agency quoted the airport director Alexei Kuzmitsky as saying there were "unfavorable weather conditions."

Russian news agencies said the plane crashed on its final approach to the airport in Petrozavodsk, landing a few hundred yards (meters) short of the runway. Petrozavodsk is in the in the province of Karelia, 400 miles (640 kilometers) northwest of Moscow.

The plane was a Russian-made Tu-134 jet, the Emergencies Ministry said, carrying 52 people, nine of whom were crew, the news agencies said. They said Russian Premier League soccer referee Vladimir Pettay was among the victims. News agencies reported a Swedish victim along with Russians.

The ministry confirmed on its website that there had been an incident and posted a list of 43 passengers. The Karelia branch of the Emergencies Ministry said radio contact with the pilot was lost at 23:40 local time (7:30 p.m. EDT, 1940GMT). The black box flight data recorders had been recovered, the news agencies said.

Earlier reports put the death toll at 40. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

AFP â€" Brij Bihari Pandey, 108, is assisted by relatives
following his release from the Gorakhpur district prison.

LUCKNOW, India (AFP) â€" Prison authorities in India have released the country's oldest inmate, 108-year-old Brij Bihari Pandey, who was convicted of a murder he committed at the age of 84, officials said Saturday.

Pandey, a Hindu priest, was freed on Friday by a court in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on humanitarian grounds as prison officials were finding it difficult to provide regular medical treatment to the "oldest prisoner in the history of Indian prisons."

"It was getting difficult to take care of a 108-year-old prisoner. We moved an application for his release and the court accepted it," said S.K. Sharma, superintendent of Gorakhpur Jail, 300 kilometres (190 miles) from the state capital Lucknow.

Sharma said the release was based on humanitarian grounds.

At the ripe old age of 84, Pandey along with 15 others, many of them his nephews and family members, killed four people over the inheritance of a Hindu religious institution.

In 2009, he was convicted and sent to Gorakhpur Jail but the weak and infirm centenarian convict had to be frequently rushed to hospital and was mostly bed-ridden.

Pandey expressed delight over his release Friday by smiling and giving a warm hug to his fellow inmates, who in turn garlanded him.

Jail officials said he received the garland with a broad smile and said, "God is great. Thank you." -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Private eye tells homeless man of inheritance
AP â€" Sat Jun 18, 8:33 pm ET

SALT LAKE CITY â€" A private investigator says he has tracked down a homeless Utah man and delivered some good news: He's inherited a lot of money.

David Lundberg said he found Max Melitzer pushing a shopping cart filled with personal possessions in a Salt Lake City park Saturday afternoon.

Lundberg declined to disclose how much money Melitzer will be receiving, but said the man's brother who died of cancer last year left him a "significant" amount in his will.

"He'll no longer be living on the street or in abandoned storage sheds," he told The Associated Press. "He'll be able to have a normal life, and be able to have a home, provide for himself, and purchase clothing, food and health care."

The story about Lundberg's two-month search for Lundberg has been reported by the Deseret News and KSL of Salt Lake City.

Lundberg said he was hired by the family's New York law firm to locate Melitzer, and some family members plan to meet Melitzer next week in Salt Lake City. He declined to identify them.

Melitzer's family wishes to remain private, and lawyers are deferring questions to Lundberg.

The investigator said he broke the news to Melitzer while they were sitting on a bench at Pioneer Park. While Lundberg said he didn't tell Melitzer how much money he was inheriting, the man was excited.

"He's still in shock. This came out of nowhere," Lundberg said. "He's a really mellow guy in his 60s, very sweet and more articulate than I thought for a man in his position."

Melitzer has been homeless for years and last had mail correspondence with his family in September. But when family members gave him a number to phone, he never called.

Don Hill, house manager at the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, told Lundberg on Friday that he had seen Melitzer near the facility two days earlier.

Hill said he has known the homeless man for four years, and Melitzer stayed at places like the Rescue Mission when he's not roaming between Salt Lake City and Ogden.

"During the summer, I'd imagine, once in a while he'll stay out nights â€" outside," Hill told the Deseret News.

Earlier this month, a police officer found Melitzer sleeping in a car in an Ogden salvage yard.

Lundberg said Melitzer was taken Saturday to an undisclosed location in Salt Lake City and doesn't want to talk to the media right now. But Lundberg said he would talk to family members about possibly holding a news conference next week.

The investigator said he found Melitzer with the help of a tip. He received about 60 or 70 such calls after news about his search went out Friday.

"Someone called today (Saturday) and said they saw him at Pioneer Park. I thought it was another crazy tip, but sure enough, there he was," Lundberg said. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Learn English Online / Spoonerisms
June 20, 2011, 06:23:08 PM
William Archibald Spooner (1844 â€" 1930) is forever locked into history because the linguistic phenomenon known as a “spoonerism” is named after him. A spoonerism involves the accidental (or sometimes intentional) swapping of letters, words, or vowels in a sentence â€" for example: “Go and shake a tower” (meaning “go and take a shower”). Spooner was a professor at Oxford and he became so famous for his spoonerisms that people would attend his lectures just to hear him make a mistake.

Some spoonerisms attributed to Spooner are:

“Mardon me padam, this pie is occupewed. Can I sew you to another sheet?” (Pardon me, madam, this pew is occupied. Can I show you to another seat?)
“Let us glaze our asses to the queer old Dean” (…raise our glasses to the dear old Queen)

Learn English Online / The Meanings Of Words Change
June 20, 2011, 06:02:34 PM
The problem with fundamentalists insisting on a literal interpretation of the Bible is that the meanings of words change.  A prime example is 'Spare the rod, spoil the child.'  A rod was a stick used by shepherds to guide their sheep to go in the desired direction.  Shepherds did not use it to beat their sheep.  The proper translation of the saying is 'Give your child guidance, or they will go astray.'  It does not mean 'Beat the s*** out of your child or he will become rotten' as many fundamentalist parents seem to believe.  --Author Unknown

University of Leeds researchers, funded by Cancer Research UK, have used a library of DNA to create a vaccine that could be used to treat cancer, according to a study published in Nature Medicine.

Before now, 'gene therapy' vaccines have often delivered just one gene to stimulate the immune system. It produces a protein, called an antigen, which activates the immune system to destroy cancer cells.

It has been difficult to develop successful cancer vaccines because each tumour has specific proteins and identifying the right antigens has been a huge challenge.

Scientists have also tried to boost the effectiveness of vaccines by using several genes to increase the chances of producing successful antigens. But a worry has always been that the immune system's response would be too strong for the body to handle.

But now researchers, working with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, US, have solved this problem in experiments involving mice.

The team used doses of a vaccine made from a virus which contained a 'library' of DNA, containing multiple fragments of genes and therefore many possible antigens. This approach did not send the immune system into overdrive, which had been a concern. Instead the range of DNA meant the vaccine was able to target the tumour through many routes.

Importantly, the DNA library was harvested from the same organ as the tumour. This meant that the immune system 'self-selected' the cancer antigens to respond to and did not react against other healthy parts of the body. Also, the process of self-selection was triggered when the vaccine was injected into the bloodstream, an approach to vaccination that is far more practical than injecting directly into tumours.

The researchers delivered a library of DNA taken from healthy prostate tissue in mice. When delivered in a virus, the vaccine successfully treated mice with prostate cancer.

Question and Answer / Re: Motuo kag faith healing?
June 20, 2011, 02:40:25 PM
Faith healing is healing claimed to be brought about by religious faith through prayers and/or rituals that, according to adherents, evoke a divine presence and power toward correcting disease and disability. Belief in divine intervention in illness or healing is related to religious belief. In common usage, faith healing refers to notably overt and ritualistic practices of communal prayer and gestures (such as laying on of hands) that are claimed to solicit divine intervention in initiating spiritual and literal healing.

Claims that prayer, divine intervention, or the ministrations of an individual healer can cure illness have been popular throughout history. Miraculous recoveries have been attributed to many techniques commonly lumped together as "faith healing". It can involve prayer, a visit to a religious shrine, or simply a strong belief in a supreme being.

The term is best known in connection with Christianity. Some people interpret the Bible, especially the New Testament, as teaching belief in, and practice of, faith healing. There have been claims that faith can cure blindness, deafness, cancer, AIDS, developmental disorders, anemia, arthritis, corns, defective speech, multiple sclerosis, skin rashes, total body paralysis, and various injuries. --Wiki

Persecutory delusions (also known as querulant delusions are a delusional condition in which the affected person believes - wrongly â€" they are being persecuted. Specifically, they have been defined as containing two central elements:

1.   The individual thinks that harm is occurring, or is going to occur.
2.   The individual thinks that the persecutor has the intention to cause harm.

According to the DSM-IV-TR, persecutory delusions are the most common form of delusions in schizophrenia, where the person believes "he or she is being tormented, followed, tricked, spied on, or ridiculed." â€"Wiki

Egotism is closely related to "loving one's self" or narcissism - indeed "by egotism we may envisage a kind of socialized narcissism". Egotists have a strong tendency "to talk about themselves a great deal...in a self-important fashion"; and egotism may include "a grandiose sense of self-importance...arrogant, boastful, conceited" and self-promoting even at the expense of others â€" "refusing to recognise others for their accomplishments". This conceit is a character trait describing a person who acts to gain values in an amount excessively greater than that which he or she gives to others. Egotism is often accomplished by exploiting the sympathy, irrationality or ignorance of others, as well as utilizing coercive force and/or fraud. --Wiki

By Delon Porcalla (The Philippine Star) Updated June 20, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The Aquino administration is willing to implement an ambitious P40-billion modernization project for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) over the next five years starting in 2012, so that the military could protect the country’s claims on the disputed Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea.

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad disclosed that starting next year, the government would be allocating P8 billion for the next five years for the AFP modernization program to protect the maritime resources and territorial integrity of the country.

He said this would help the country defend its territory, including those that are being claimed in the disputed Spratly Islands, and stop the bullying of other claimant-nations in the West Philippine Sea off Palawan.

In an interview in Calamba, Laguna where President Aquino led the 150th birthday celebration of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, AFP chief of staff Eduardo Oban Jr. said the new modernization fund would help the military improve its capability.

“We will have to face acquisition of equipment. Definitely, the P40 billion is just really for immediate requirements. We’ll be coming up with a list of priority acquisition, and this has to be driven by strategy,” he told reporters.

“It’s the baseline capability that the AFP really needs to improve on,” Oban asserted.

Out of the P330 billion that was earmarked for the 15-year AFP modernization program (1995-2010), only around P33 billion was actually released to the AFP, or 10 percent of the total amount that former President Ramos projected.

This covered the terms of former presidents Fidel Ramos, Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo until June 2010.

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) will postpone further action and resolutions on various bids and matters pending in all its offices and attached agencies to allow incoming DOTC Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II to conduct his own review of all projects and programs.

Hernando Cabrera, Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) corporate secretary and Light Rail Transit-Metro Rail Transit (LRT-MRT) spokesman, said that all ongoing public bidding for big-ticket projects being conducted by the DOTC-LRTA technical working group have been postponed by the LRTA to wait for the assumption of Roxas on July 1.

The renovated townhouse is split into a triplex with two apartments on the top floors that rent for $4,000 and $5,000, respectively. The entire townhouse has six bedrooms, five bathrooms and a garden with a small poolâ€"this one for the owner's turtles. There are also five fireplaces, including one in each of the rental apartments.

Ms. McMurray Van-Zeller said she's ready to move back to Europe and own a smaller place in Manhattan. She says the buyer of her home could either be "a celebrity or someone who wants a trophy property or bragging rights." She added, "Who doesn't want to say they have a swimming pool in their living room?"

The property was listed in February with CORE. Prior to that, it had been on and off the market in 2008 with an initial asking price of $11.5 million. -- http://realestate.yahoo.com/

The art around the pool enhances the experience.

The pool level has a brick wall and is surrounded by granite flooring and living-room furnishings. Ms. McMurray Van-Zeller said the artwork, antiques, medieval weaponry and plantings in the adjoining atrium give the space a "cave-like, medieval, Moroccan look."

But achieving the look was no easy task. In order to hang the artwork and weaponry on the brick wall, Ms. McMurray Van-Zeller had to get a 25-foot ladder and place it in the pool; in order to reach the ladder without getting wet, she employed a small pink raft, rowed it to the ladder, and climbed up to affix the decorations to the wall.

"Improvisation is very important when you have a house like this," she said. "The good news is that if you fall off, you fall into the pool."

While pool maintenance may be a drag, Ms. McMurray Van-Zeller says she and her animals thoroughly enjoy the amenity. Her three turtles and 5-pound Yorkshire terrier sometimes go for a dip. "You feel like you're on a permanent holiday," she said. "There's almost no reason to leave the house [with] the pool, the sauna [and] the gym."

The Chelsea neighborhood townhouse has a 15-by-30 foot pool in the living room.

It's not often that you come across a home with 30,000 gallons of water in the living room. But one rare property in Manhattan is equipped with just thatâ€"an indoor pool that doubles as an entertainment area for the owners.

The "trophy property," as the owner calls it, is a Federal-style townhouse on West 15th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues, which is on the market for $10.955 million.

Evelyn McMurray Van-Zeller was living in Europe when she inherited the Manhattan home from her brother in 1995; she now lives there with her husband, João Van-Zeller.

For Ms. McMurray Van-Zeller, taking on the townhouse was challenging both emotionally and physically. "I had a full, complete life in Europe," she said. "In several weeks I had to sell houses, cars, a dog. It was very difficult. This is a complicated house to inherit."

The 15-by-30-foot pool is eight-feet deep and was installed in 1975 by previous owners. Ms. McMurray Van-Zeller said the pool is "grandfathered in."
