Indeed, indeed. I personally try to think of the positive and never consider negative possibilities when concerning great political minds such as Rizal, Robespierre, Jacobin, Marat, Locke, etc.

I do agree that had Sr. Dr. Rizal survived and was spared his fate in Dapitan, could he have succeeded in awakening the national persona of the Filipino and brought in the majesty of national discourse to our beloved Fatherland? When one reads the works of Rizal, I can't help but hear the echoes of the French Revolution and the 1st Republic's core values of "Liberté, égalité, et fraternité".

Had Rizal been spared, do you think that he would have cooperated with the Malolos Republic in setting up the first republican form of government in all of Asia? Or do you think the Philippine Revolution would have had been less convicing---since Rizal's death sparked a growth in anti-Spanish sentiments that benefited the Independence movement in the country?? I can only wonder....on the possibilities.

What do you think??

Rizal, en mi opinión, había el pensador político más grande terminado. Rizal era gran poeta, gran filósofo, gran idealista. ¿Sin embargo, usted lo piensa habría diferenciado si él vivió? :)

Sinceramente,

I totally agree with Mike. Instead of being negative in showing the significance of the Filipinos in our global society, why not just cooperate in our said specialized fields?

Filipinos are known to be hard working, dependable, patient, hard to anger and quick to forgive here in the United States. Do you know what my physicians say to me whenever I go to my preceptorships in the hospital? They always ask "Are you Filipino?" and after answering 'Yes, sir or Yes, ma'am', they always respond in a proverbial: "Ah, another Filipino doctor". The nursing staff that I work with in my time at the hospital are usually headed by Filipina nurses or--there is always that one PARTICULAR Filipina nurse that is the favorite of patients because of his/her intelligence and caregiving abilities.

Couple of weeks ago, when I was assisting Dr. Villanueva, a Podiatric Surgeon, in assessing one patient's metatarsals and calcaneal region--as the patient was suffering from disasterous dry gangrene--the patient asked if his foot was going to be surgically amputated. Dr. Villanueva, who happens to be Filipino, answered the patient's questions softly and always with a sympathetic voice. The patient was cared during pre-op as well as during post op. Though the patient died of complications after surgery (as he was hypertensive, had peripheral neuropathy and due to his age, was immuno-suppressed). Dr. Villanueva was there with the said patient till the end. Kind and always reassuring to the patient and to the family members. That to me is the very embodiment and epitome of what a surgeon/physician should be. And I am honored to work and shadow that man, and most of all very proud that he is a Filipino and that other Americans can see and witness the charisma and efficiency of Filipino medical professionals.

The same can be said in other fields be it Law, economics-commerce etc.

Kuya Mike, can you send me a message on the location for the kid and the address to where I should hand it to him? Perhaps I can write a check out and mail it to his address? Thanks in advance.

But the sacrifice cannot be in the form of a messiah without a corresponding worthiness in the nation and its people.  Otherwise, messiah after messiah will perish for naught.

And if Rizal had been our president he would have exhorted each of us to strive to be great in our aspirations and in our deeds.  "Sic itur ad astra." :)

Amen to that; you make a valid and true point. Now that you said it, i wonder---had our beloved Sr. Dr. Jose P Rizal ever been president, do you think he would have been corrupted by the veils of politics? Or do you think he would have been as idealistic such as Robespierre and Jacobin--and become the antithesis what we now remember him for?

For..absolute power does corrupt absolutely..

Okay..

So right now I'm kinda seeing a girl who happens to be of a different race/ethnicity. I know that there are people out there that are into dating people who are Asian, puti, itoom, etc. In fact many of the members here are probably in the same situation as myself.

Naturally, I'm attracted to Filipiniana looking women--you know women who are very Filipina in facial phenotype--as im not really interested in women who are 'mestizo' looking or 'mestizong intsik' looking. It was never my 'thing' back in high school as well as in my early college years. But ya, since taking medical biochemistry this summer, I got to know a friend of mine really well. And when I mean 'get to know' I think ive fallen head over heals for her--well it was nothing serious at first--i guess more of a crush in the way she prepared sulfanimide and the way she joked around when we were carbonating our 1.5 M hydocholoric acids. So ya--its been like almost 4 weeks now and I think i really like this girl and am thinking about asking her out---but the only thing that is holding me back is the race/ethnicity factor.

Im a pretty conservative guy, and most of my friends are Filipinos who date Filipinos or date other asians. And I will admit that in the past I had issues with white guys who dated Filipinas--ionno i guess me and my friends got jealous or were ethnocentric---I admit that. And I guess I grew out of that phase in life. This is why this situation is new to me because the girl that I really like happens to be puti. I mean, I remember swearing to myself once about never dating anyone that wasn't Filipina--

++++++++

But ya, any of you guys ever placed in this kind of situation? Yes No? Care to tell your story---??

Objection your Honor.

Bisaya is a language, and was never a dialect.

A dialect is just an attachment to a particular major language.

Bisaya is not attached to any of the Philippine languages.

Bisaya can exist alone.

This has been the position advocated by Leoncio Deriada, chair of UP-Iloilo English Department, and supported by the Who's Who of the Philippine Literature.

Amen to that! I totally agree.

Sacrifice was already given, my friend. In the form of Beningno Ninoy Aquino. It was his death and unfortunate passing that awakened the millions of Filipinos--seaking justice and democracy---with its mighty wake, the lashes and control of the Marcos administration buckled into the pages of history. If only the Filipino people could maintain our passionate nature and wipe out graft and corruption into a mitigate percentage...

However, I believe that our current administration is doing as much as possible with what little resources we have. So far so good, says I. Let it be incentive for the next presidencies to follow the trend of economic improvement as well as human development index.

Btw, my friend, I am in love with the philosophical and literary works of Sr. Dr. Jose P. Rizal; I actually did a rendition of his 'Ultima Adios' in college for my East Asian History Class. To think...if we had a president as brilliant and as passionate as Sr. Dr. Rizal....

What a nation the Philippines could have been..

Daghan because women here are easy preys, because of poverty. It's a different story when a Filipino woman meets a foreigner and got to know each other and fall in love just because they were lovable to each other, and not because they wanted to have sex. But in most cases, foreigners contact women here and seem to do a selection process as to who are good performers in bed. Are women made to be just objects for sex? we need to repair our values and culture.

I do agree, but sometimes naman...some women do marry foreigners so they can come abroad and are able to send money back to their family you know? Which I totally understand--after all they are helping them in the process. Looy lang pood sila, and you know, they are able to bring their family members here to the 'states or abroad. Thats one thing I love about my Filipino people---we are so passionate about finding a better living for our family and kids. God Bless them for that.

I totally agree with ya riva. Thats evident here in the 'states. Considering the massive numbers of Filipinos in America--we're the 2nd largest asian minority in the state's as there are almost 2.5 million of us here--second only to the Chinese Americans. To the point tho--there are thousands upon thousands of Filipinos in the US medical field--either as Physicians, registered nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, nursing aides etc. As a medical extern for my local podiatrist---many of the other physicians that work in the hospital i volunteer at is a filipino or the doctors there know of a filipino physician or filipino nurse. The hospital where my mom works at---the entire ICU/ intensive care unit floor is dominated by filipina nurses and physicians---who are considered 'crucial medical care providers here in the united states'. Imagine if all the Fil-Am med workers decided not to go to work?

Talk about a medical nightmare, lol.

Thats one thing I really admire about our people---we give so much to our host country---sacrifice so much for our kids and our grandchildren and manage to give back a couple of hundreds of dollars or thousands of dollars a month back to the philippines to help family and friends. The big heart of the Filipino--and his hard working, proud nature---

No other people is as noble as the Filipino.
#53838
I really doubt that the United States has any plans for a third front --considering how stretched the Army and the Army reserves are in the Iraqi theatre. Considering the unpopularity of Bush's administration's handling of the war---if Bush's administration opens conflict with Iran--it would only enrage the American public. Shoot---this war has already cost over 600 Billion US dollars for us---more than what it cost to finance the 10 years in Vietnam....

IMO, going in Iran would be strategic and political suicide for the United States---if it were to use conventional warefare. I mean..if we're going to go to war in Iran and hope to attain some kind of victory---and spare american lives---then Washington's gonna have to NUKE Iran. Or else---conventional warefare will bleed us in the region.

God I hope Bush isnt that stupid.... :-X :-[

I like your figurative language in referring Marcos to 'Humpty Dumpty'; definately a classic. You know what I noticed--most of my friends that are bisaya--usually have parents and family members who adored Marcos and refer to him as a 'Great politician', however my friends who are originally from Pampanga, Luzon area and Bicol Area have very negative views of him.

Oh so how I wish there would be a future Phil. President with the same charisma and sheer political will as Marcos. His ability to command the military and buckle neighbouring countries--and his almost card-playing abilities in talking and playing with the Americans. What a legacy he could have made had he not gone 'corrupt'.
#53841
I think  its a great idea; a person's gender should not be a limiting factor to his/her potential to be a leader in the Philippines. Look at Pres. Aquino and Pres. Arroyo-Macapagal. Both of whom have brought the country out of depression and both of whom were women. I think Filipina women have proven themselves as worthy candidates for public office. Of course they should have the proper education, experience and ability to command the senado and kongresso---AND attain the loyalty of our AFP  :P
#53842
OK. We all know who he was and what he did for the Philippines/ and or to the Philippines. However whenever I talk to my pinoy friends and their parents they have very different conflicting views of Pres. Marcos. I know my family--specially my dad's side of the family who hail him as one of the greatest presidents of the Republic--and there is my mom's side who like him because of his electricity program to Bohol--and his Machismo-esque ordered society. Then there are other Filipinos like my friends' parents who hail from other parts of the Philippines and have very negative views of Marcos. They point out his corrupt flaws and  his anti-democratic ideologies--and talk of him being an embodiment of a cruel/ruthless dictator similar to those of the likes of Fidel Castro, Sadaam Hussein, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, Sukarto and Sukarno.

What are your views on this man?? Any personal experiences at all?

I'm not so positive and optimistic with letting the Chinese 'walk' over the Republic of the Philippines. I'm a member of our collegiate political science debate team as well as an avid reader concerning the regional discourse occuring in Asia-Pacific==and I will agree with GEC, your servant as well as Ghost's view of China as a growing regional hegemon. However, as a strong nationalist and Philippine patriot, I believe in the importance in the maintenance of the territorial jurisdiction of the Republic of the Philippines--including the right of our 72 provinces--including autonomous regions to be covered by the Armed Forces of the Republic fo the Philippines.

It is evident that the Philippine economy is a rising force in ASEAN--as we have been noted by IMF as well as financial think-tanks as one of the 'ASEAN 5'--which includes Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia as the rising economic force in south east asia. With this economic increase---added with our high population growth---there will be an inevetible need to secure and maintain the necessary natural resources to provide our national growth--as well as maintain necessary human development index. The Spratley Islands --or otherwise known as the Kalayaan group has potential rich natural gas reserves---which would better serve the Philippines in fueling our domestic demand on the said energy source.

Additionally, by the right and declaration of the International Treaty on the Sea and national jurisdiction, the Spratley Islands are within miles of Philippine Special Economic Zones in Palawaan as well as is covered by the Philippine Navy's Northern Command/Western Command. It is by right of geographic location---that these islands are EVIDENTLY Philippine territory. As we speak, there are battallions stationed in Philippine administered Kalayaan Group--and with it are F-5 Freedom Fighters whose sole duty is to protect the Philippine's claim to these zones.

I am in total support of an enlarged Philippine Armed Forces--and if everything goes according to planned under the Arroyo Administration--our air force as well as navy will have the proper means to uphold the Republic's territorial and national jurisdictin without fear and redress for powers abroad. The PRC will dare not take any of our claimed territories---as its government knows full well that the Philippine Navy has engaged Chinese patrol ships time and time again and chased them/if not neutralized some during these proxy military clashes. Per se if China did go to war with the Philippines over these islands--it would not only destabilize the region--but its actions would upset the PRC's relationship with ASEAN--by which the Philippines was one of the founding members--and is a significant member in. Additionally, China needs to take into consideration that the Philippines is a LONG time strategic military/economic ally of the United States of America, the world's only super power. And considering that the United States is THE most greatest contributing factor to the Chinese' economic resiliency--as in America is the largest buyer of Chinese goods--it would be in the best interest of China to refrain from irritating an ally of the United States.

The Republic of the Philippines is a potential regional power--with a massive man power of over 90 million--not including the millions of Filipinos living abroad--with a resilient and growing economy--is not a small power to mess around with. The Philippines isnt Taiwan--which is a nation of a mere 20+ million people. The Philippine's is the 2nd largest nation in all of ASEAN--and has strategic relationships with Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei--as well as strong relationships with Japan and South Korea. Think about the consequences for China----i dont think its worth it for these mere 'spratley islands'.

By right as an archipelagic nation--these islands are OURS. China needs to stay out of South China Sea and leave South East Asia for South East Asians.

Interesting; my question on this matter is "who is the target?" Clearly its evident of the situation between the PRC and the Republic of Taiwan; as well as growing Chinese nationalist sentiments against Japan and its federal government's stance on WWII affairs. My question is: what is the stance the Republic of the Philippines on this military growth? Its evident that the Chinese and the Philippines have confrontational policies regarding ownership of the Spratley Islands; per se other countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei claim partial ownership of the islands as well. Is the RP developing our defense sector at all? How can the A.F.P challenge the PLA/PLAN/PLAA in case of future military clashes?

Rose,

At times, I feel Bohol is just too laidback and "sleepy." I feel bored and restless. But then I forgot, these are some of the reasons why I came back to Bohol in the first place. Yeah, I'm lucky to be home. Thanks for reminding me. Now, I just stopped whining. hehehe!

Nothing wrong about being 'sleepy' or laidback, mate. I personally wish Bohol will remain that way---i personally dont like the hustle and bustle scene of city life. Bohol...is like a little piece of paradise here on earth. IMO

Anyone have news on the DILG Provincial Director and DILG Assistant Provincial Director? Is it true that the DILG provincial director is retiring and is being replaced by  Ma. Louella E. Lucino?

LOL. Are you friggin kidding me? Thats pathetic how he had to do that---considering the situation right now in Britain and in the states with bomb threats. Im happy the hard stance the Philippine gov is taking in this situation--this guy should get the 5 years imprisonment. Great way to teach a lesson.

I totally agree with you Riva; especially with Russia's meddling with Ukrainian politics--involving Yuschenko and the Kremlin's subvertive anti-Orange Revolution policies. As an American, I support the US planned missile shield in central-eastern Europe--as a means to reinforce American interests in the region and check Russia's 'activities'.
