At the risk of being hypocritical, I have to agree with mfrandsen.

The Church may oppose artificial methods of contraception but it cannot help but do so because of its doctrines.  To say that the Church is responsible for the overpopulation of the Philippines is itself irresponsible.  The matter of population control is something that every Filipino must answer for himself or herself.

Many Filipinos have been Christians by convenience, we follow only what is least disquieting to our schedule and spout biblical passages only when they serve our purpose.  By the same line of reasoning, Filipinos would use artificial methods of birth control, with or without the Church's blessing, if we really wanted to.  If it's convenient.

There have been as many homilies against gambling, against unfaithfulness, and against dishonesty as there have been homilies against contraception but do you see Filipino Christians gambling less, being more faithful to their spouses, and politicians being more honest?  We so quickly raise the defense of contraception being against the Church's teachings when we do not even observe all the other teachings of the Church.

I honestly think that it isn't our large population that is hurting our economy. A large population is a good thing as long as you have the right "management" ( at the moment I can't think of a better word, but I guess you get the point).

I heard about this too, dili daw mo work ang family planning kay mobabag ang church, but as for me, naa raman guro jud na sa tawo or magtiayon kung naghuna-huna sila sa kaugmaon sa ilang mga anak.

sakto sad ka cel, naa ra na sa mga parents but then mas maayo man unta nga mo assist sad ang government kay kasagaran ra ba sa daghan ug anak kaning mga less fortunate filipinos, kasagaran mga walay insaktong grado tingali ang uban wala kabalo ang mga family planning methods... so, dapat mohatag jud ang government ug awareness program about sa family planning and it should be for free or dapat strict policy jud. dili na maihap ang mga batang gpang labay sa suba, dili na maihap ang mga batang naa sa kalsada ngpalimos, puno na intawn ang mga dswd centers sa mga batang gpasagdan. haay., pilipinas gubot pa sa lukot..hehehe!

So what do you think should be done about it? Do you think the current administration is doing its job? Not enough?

My knee-jerk answer would be, "No."

But then I think of how thinly spread the government's resources are and I have second-thoughts.  In a country where close to 70% of the budget goes to debt servicing and the bulk of the remaining funds goes into modernizing the armed forces, one can only do so much.  (I once saw a local TV documentary on the state of government hospitals in Samar and Leyte and I could only rage at the helplessness that the doctors and nurses there must feel.)  And then comes graft and corruption.

So then I'd like to think that only a responsible, empowered citizenry is the answer but I realize that most don't even know where the next meal is going to come from.

However, I also believe that we can all do our bit to help, the government as well, but we will have to begin with values.

It is interesting Onicul85, that you have a quote from our national hero, Jose Rizal, as your signature.

I am reminded of Fr. Victorino's (I think) words in El Fili, when he said that as long as we reward vice and punish virtue we will continue to suffer.  Indeed, the sacrifice must be pure to be acceptable.

Sacrifice was already given, my friend. In the form of Beningno Ninoy Aquino. It was his death and unfortunate passing that awakened the millions of Filipinos--seaking justice and democracy---with its mighty wake, the lashes and control of the Marcos administration buckled into the pages of history. If only the Filipino people could maintain our passionate nature and wipe out graft and corruption into a mitigate percentage...

However, I believe that our current administration is doing as much as possible with what little resources we have. So far so good, says I. Let it be incentive for the next presidencies to follow the trend of economic improvement as well as human development index.

Btw, my friend, I am in love with the philosophical and literary works of Sr. Dr. Jose P. Rizal; I actually did a rendition of his 'Ultima Adios' in college for my East Asian History Class. To think...if we had a president as brilliant and as passionate as Sr. Dr. Rizal....

What a nation the Philippines could have been..

But the sacrifice cannot be in the form of a messiah without a corresponding worthiness in the nation and its people.  Otherwise, messiah after messiah will perish for naught.

And if Rizal had been our president he would have exhorted each of us to strive to be great in our aspirations and in our deeds.  "Sic itur ad astra." :)

Amen to that; you make a valid and true point. Now that you said it, i wonder---had our beloved Sr. Dr. Jose P Rizal ever been president, do you think he would have been corrupted by the veils of politics? Or do you think he would have been as idealistic such as Robespierre and Jacobin--and become the antithesis what we now remember him for?

For..absolute power does corrupt absolutely..

I really don't know how he would have turned out but I imagine that if he were offered the position, much like Gandhi, he would refuse the office and leave it to those who are more interested.
I imagine that his activities, among other things, would be primarily directed towards awakening the people to the rights and the duties of citizens.

As for absolute power corrupting absolutely, I feel that the quote has exceptions.  The quote from Lord Acton goes, "Power tends to corrupt.  And absolute power corrupts absolutely.  Great men have almost always been bad men."

"Almost always" allows for a few exceptions and, as naive as it may seem, I hope Rizal would have been one of them. :)

Indeed, indeed. I personally try to think of the positive and never consider negative possibilities when concerning great political minds such as Rizal, Robespierre, Jacobin, Marat, Locke, etc.

I do agree that had Sr. Dr. Rizal survived and was spared his fate in Dapitan, could he have succeeded in awakening the national persona of the Filipino and brought in the majesty of national discourse to our beloved Fatherland? When one reads the works of Rizal, I can't help but hear the echoes of the French Revolution and the 1st Republic's core values of "Liberté, égalité, et fraternité".

Had Rizal been spared, do you think that he would have cooperated with the Malolos Republic in setting up the first republican form of government in all of Asia? Or do you think the Philippine Revolution would have had been less convicing---since Rizal's death sparked a growth in anti-Spanish sentiments that benefited the Independence movement in the country?? I can only wonder....on the possibilities.

What do you think??

Rizal, en mi opinión, había el pensador político más grande terminado. Rizal era gran poeta, gran filósofo, gran idealista. ¿Sin embargo, usted lo piensa habría diferenciado si él vivió? :)

Sinceramente,

Rizal, in my opinion, was the biggest political mind. Rizal was a big poet, big philosopher, big idealist. Nevertheless, do you think that you would have differentiated if he lived?

Dispensame mi amigo.  :)  Uhmmm...tengo poco español.   :P  Hablamos en ingles o Binisaya?  ;)

Seriously, I just know some phrases and a few words and I'm not really sure about my conjugations, which is a shame since my father taught and my mother still does teach Spanish.  :-[

Anyway, for one such as Rizal, who felt so much passion for his country and his fellowmen and who would not compromise his ideals, his fate was inevitable.  His life may have ended abruptly but often there is no other way to die for people like him except as a hero.  But, at least, his ideas and ideals have become immortal through us.

The CIA Factbook says we are now 91 million. Exact Figure: 91,077,287 (July 2007 estimate)

Ohhh my,kadaghan na ba nato..the last figure I remembered about our population was 82 million and that was 3 years ago...kadali gud ni grow sa atong population.

Here the population of Norway as of 2007 : 4,627,926 (Source: CIA World Factbook )

The government has to make serious move in controlling our population and I think it's about time that the Church cooperates.

Population control has been a big issue since then and it really bothers me until now on whether I should support the government or the church.I'm a devoted Catholic and I come from a religious family. My mother is against contraceptive (and she doesn't allow my brother and his wife to use one), but I want them to use contraceptives especially now that they don't have jobs yet.

For me,it is more sinful to have many children and not able to provide for their needs and even basic needs for that matter. The use of contraceptives should be legalized for population control. However,I'm still against the legalization of abortion.

I want to live by the moment and worry no more about my future because I know that God has already made the best plan for me. All I have to do is be faithful to HIM all the time. GOD rocks!

Thats a really good point you brought up, Julai. The fact that our country's population is growing at a rate of 1.5+% a year is a serious concern, as it does pose a threat to proper human development index rates. The Philippines is a regional power--with such a population--and its evident that we need breathing space. I think that we need to colonize Mindanao and focus on total assimilation---I also think that one way to solve our population problem is also to press our historical claim of Sabah Province, which is at this moment being occupied by Malaysian Squatters. Sabah is a historical estate by the Sulu Sultanate, which is a political entity that is under protection and collaboration by the Philippine Government.

I say..we pursue a 'southward' expansion. Philippine Manifest Destiny is inevetible---

Reading the last two posts, reminds me how off-topic the discussion preceding them have been.

Maybe there should be a separate thread for Rizal?

Mi amigo Brando, perdoname.  Yo no hablo bien español.  Tengo triste. :(

As I've said before, my friend, I only know trite phrases and a few words, although I do understand a little bit of what you are saying, er... writing.  Please permit me to answer in English. :)

Yes, I agree, the Spanish language is as much a part of our national identity as our pre-Hispanic culture and unless we recognize it and accept it we are a people rootless.  Their laws, their religion, their literature, their arts still have a bearing on contemporary culture.  And the importance of español alone as the primary language  in studying our history cannot be undermined.  However, we cannot insist upon other persons who refuse to learn the language because it is not the lingua franca or for the pseudo-patriotic reason that it was the language of the conquistadors (which, of course, begs the question, "Why study English then?").  We can only start with ourselves.

p.s.  I confess to reading only the English translations of the Noli and the Fili and I know that there is always something changed by translation but I trust that Soledad Lacson-Locsin tried to stay true to the spirit and the passion of the originals.
