(BANAT NEWS)

Friday, a song by US teen singer Rebecca Black, has gone viral after the song's music video was uploaded onto video sharing website YouTube. The video has attracted over thirty-five million views since its February 10 upload â€" and critics think it could be the world's worst.

Ark Music Factory produced the song and video, using US$2,000 (£1,223, C$1,964, â,¬1,412) from Black's mother. Friday's video was shot at Black's father's house, with her family and friends as extras. The song beat an alternative track when choosing what to record.

The single is climbing up the iTunes singles chart in the United Kingdom and the United States, gaining a higher position in the US than Canadian singer Justin Bieber.

Despite the song's popularity, it has received a largely negative reception. According to Newsbeat, critics have cited Friday as being "the worst song of all time." On YouTube, the video attracted approximately thirty-six thousand 'likes' versus over 314,000 'dislikes'. The song itself has been ridiculed for its lyrics and criticised for its use of Auto-Tune.

Feeling "like [she was] being cyber-bullied," Rebecca Black said "[w]hen I first saw all these nasty comments I thought this is all my fault, ... this was all because of me." Black says of "[t]hose hurtful comments", the worst was "I hope you cut yourself and I hope you get an eating disorder so you look pretty. I hope you cut and die." Clarence Jey, of Ark Music Factory, offered to take the video off YouTube, but Black declined.

In contrast, British music executive Simon Cowell has expressed a positive interest in Rebecca Black. "I love her and the fact she's gotten so much publicity," Cowell commented. "People are so upset about the song, but I think it's hysterical. I want to meet her. Anyone who can create this much controversy within a week, I want to meet. I love people like that."

Rebecca Black herself wants to record a duet with Justin Bieber. "I have Bieber fever â€" I am in love with Justin Bieber," Black commented. The teenager said it "would be unbelievable and make my life". --Wiki

Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte expectedly came to the aid of his daughter, Mayor Sara Duterte, who is now facing possible disbarment and dismissal after punching a court sheriff last Friday.

In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" on Sunday, the father Duterte said he fully supports his daughter, and if disbarred as lawyer or dismissed as mayor, her daughter should be happy and celebrate since she got into trouble for protecting the welfare of the poor Dabawenyos.

"Ayaw pangayo'g pasaylo. I am proud of you, I congratulate you. Tama na. Kung mawala ka sa trabaho, madismiss ka as mayor, ayaw kaguol. Be proud of it because you were dismissed while protecting your fellowman labi na ang pobre. Kung matanggalan ka ug titulo pagka abugado, you celebrate, total di man ka mamatay ug dili ka abugado. Be happy with the thought na nadisbar ka tungod kay nasuko ka na ang mga tao gidaug-daug. Ayaw'g kabalaka, next election dagan pagka mayor, pagkahuman pangulataha usab ng mga sheriff na abusado. A treasure trove of gold and silver jewelry, coins and precious stones said to be worth billions of dollars has been found in a Hindu temple in southern India, officials said on Saturday.

The valuables have an estimated preliminary worth of over 500 billion rupees ($11.2 billion), said Kerala Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar, catapulting the temple into the league of India's richest temples.

The thousands of necklaces, coins and precious stones have been kept in at least five underground vaults at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple which is renowned for its intricate sculptures.

"We are yet to open one more secret chamber which has not been opened for nearly 140 years," Jayakumar told AFP.

The actual value of the treasure haul can be ascertained only after it is examined by the archaeological department, said Jayakumar.

The temple, dedicated to Hindu lord Vishnu, was built hundreds of years ago by the king of Travancore and donations by devotees have been kept in the temple's vaults since.

A necklace found on Thursday was 18 feet (six metres) long. Thousands of gold coins have also been found.

Since India achieved independence from Britain in 1947, a trust managed by descendants of the Travancore royal family has controlled the temple.

But India's Supreme Court recently ordered that the temple be managed by the state to ensure the security of valuables at the shrine.

Until now, the Thirupathy temple in southern Andhra Pradesh state was believed to be India's richest temple with offerings from devotees worth 320 billion rupees.

The revelation about the huge riches in the Padmanabhaswamy temple has forced police to sharply step install security cameras and alarms.

Authorities also plan to set up a commando force for security, said Kerala director general of police Jacob Punnoose.

"Now it?s known all over the world that the Padmanabhaswamy temple has jewels worth billions of rupees we have decided to assign it maximum security," Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told AFP. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Bible Study / Re: Miracle claimed for WWII-era pope
July 03, 2011, 06:17:31 PM
"But for me it was a miracle, because it wasn't possible," she said, fighting back tears. "It wasn't possible. Not even they believed it in that moment."

D'Arco didn't respond to email requests for comment and couldn't be reached by telephone.

Dr. Ann S. LaCasce, an assistant professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School's lymphoma program and affiliated Dana Farber Cancer Institute, said Esposito's speedy recovery wasn't all that remarkable.

"Not surprising at all," LaCasce said after reviewing the protocol Esposito received. "The key is this aggressive, multi-agent chemotherapy regimen that she got. It doesn't sound like a miracle at all. She did great, as expected."

LaCasce, who said she treats four to five cases of Burkitt's a year, said the prognosis for the rare subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is usually very good, particularly for children and young adults who can tolerate the high toxicity that the aggressive chemo entails.

"Burkitt's is a disease we like to treat because they do really well, they feel better so quickly," LaCasce said. "She was cured of her disease with the appropriate chemotherapy."

Esposito and her supporters, however, are undeterred. Just last week, she traveled to Rome to take part in a ceremony outside St. Peter's Square marking the anniversary of the day the city of Rome dedicated a piazza to Pius to thank him for having defended Rome from the Nazis.

Esposito says she wants people to know Pius not just for what he did for Rome but for her.

"I am here. I want to say I'm alive. I know what I went through and I assure you, it was really serious, something awful. Death was very close. And I am here." -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Her husband, Umberto di Maio, said the family had been praying to John Paul II, who had died just a few months before, when Esposito was diagnosed in July 2005. But as di Maio recounts it, John Paul appeared to him in a dream one night and said he couldn't help Esposito but showed a photo of a slim, bespectacled prelate who could.

Di Maio said he wasn't able to identify the priest until he saw Pius on the cover of a Catholic magazine a week later. As soon as he did, the family began fervently praying to Pius.

The family became convinced of Pius' intervention when Esposito's case was referred to a cancer specialist in Rome, an atheist who, after reviewing her charts, asked the family if they believed in God.

When di Maio replied they did, the doctor said: "Then pray, because she needs it," di Maio recounted.

Esposito, who still keeps the same dog-eared photocopy of Pius in her book of prayers, says she and her doctors were stunned when her PET scan, which detects lingering traces of cancer, came out clean after her six-week chemo cycle at the Umberto I hospital in the southern city of Nocera, near Salerno.

Her doctor, she said, was flabbergasted: "'Do you see this? It's clean! How is it possible?'" Esposito recalled Dr. Alfonso Maria D'Arco, head of oncology and hematology at Umberto I, as saying.

"And spontaneously I said to him, 'Doctor, doctor, isn't it possible that it came from above?" she said, pointing heavenward.

"No, no, no. Don't say shocking things," she said he responded.

"It annoys me terribly that such an injustice is being done to such a great man, that he should be treated the way he is," said Marchione, the Pius biographer who is promoting Esposito's miracle case.

Sitting in her order's convent a stone's throw from the Vatican, Marchione said her religious congregation alone, on orders from Pius, sheltered 114 Jewish women at three separate convents during the Nazi occupation.

"I'm just tired of the whole thing that people can't go back to the documents that prove it and accept it as historical truth," she said in a recent interview.

Marchione flips through one of her nine books on Pius to prove her point: a photo of Jewish women and children sheltered in the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo; a photo of a pro-pope rally after Rome was liberated in 1944; a shot of the pope with members of the Israeli Philharmonic who in 1955 performed a concert for Pius in the Vatican in gratitude for having saved Jews.

Marchione has been unflagging in her support for Esposito's case, presenting it first to Bertone, the Vatican's secretary of state, in 2009 and recently sending her secretary to Castellammare di Stabia to gather Esposito's testimony and medical file to send directly to the Vatican's saint-making office.

For Pius' supporters, the hunt for a miracle is all the more urgent because he isn't a household name like Mother Teresa or Pope John Paul II. Where he is known, it's most often in the context of his controversial record, not necessarily because people would think to pray to him for a medical cure.

Esposito, in fact, said she had never heard of Pius until she fell ill.

Despite opposition, Pius' cause is progressing at an impressive clip amid an increasingly concerted effort by Benedict and Pius' supporters to highlight his virtues and discredit his naysayers. A museum is planned in his honor, as are conferences and exhibits.

The Vatican's newspaper, Pius' chief cheerleader, recently ran an article about how Pius had Jews sheltered in convents around Rome during the Nazi occupation. A Vatican-sponsored film festival in May screened three glowing films about his papacy. Benedict himself recently extolled Pius as a hero during the war, saying he'd earned the "everlasting gratitude" of its victims.

Jewish groups and historians have argued for years that the Vatican had no business moving forward with Pius' beatification cause until the Vatican's full secret archive of his papacy is opened to scholars for independent research. That process is expected to take several more years.

"My position has always been to say â€" and I've said it to Pope Benedict XVI â€" that this is a matter that should be deferred until at least the generation of Holocaust survivors is no longer with us, so it's not as if rubbing the salt into their wounds," said Rabbi David Rosen, head of interfaith relations at the American Jewish Committee.

Last year, 19 Catholic scholars appealed to the academic in Benedict to give researchers more time to study the full archives. "The question isn't 'Did he do anything?' but whether he might have done more or sooner," said the Rev. John Pawlikowski, ethics professor at the Catholic Theologcial Union who co-wrote the letter.

Pius' supporters, however, are getting impatient. They charge that few scholars ever consult the 11 volumes of World War II archives that have already been released and put online, along with thousands of other documents, by a foundation headed by a Long Island Jew who admires Pius.

Some question, for example, whether the original diagnosis was correct for the French nun whose inexplicable cure of Parkinson's disease paved the way for Pope John Paul II's beatification. Others have questioned whether the Jewish convert Edith Stein should have been canonized based on the survival of a 2-year-old girl who overdosed on Tylenol.

As such, the questions surrounding Pius' possible miracle are just further evidence of the obstacles and deep theological, historical and political divisions that his cause has run into ever since it was launched in 1965.

Pius was pope in 1939-1958. Before his election he served as the Vatican's No. 2 and before that as papal nuncio to Germany. Given his deep involvement in the Vatican's diplomatic affairs with the Nazis, what Pius did or didn't do during the war has become the single most divisive issue in the Vatican's relations with Jews.

More recently, his beatification case has become the symbolic battleground in the debate over the future of the Catholic Church. Progressives are opposed to it because to them, Pius represents the church before the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Traditionalists and conservatives are in favor of it for precisely the same reasons.

The Vatican insists Pius used quiet diplomacy to save Jewish lives and that speaking out more forcefully against the Nazis would have resulted in more deaths. Critics argue he could have and should have said and done more.

"To talk about the pope as anything other than a moral coward as far as the murder of Jews of Rome is concerned is difficult for any of us who study what actually happened to take," said Brown University anthropologist and historian David Kertzer, author of a forthcoming book on Pius' predecessor, Pope Pius XI.

"I'm certain that inside of me there was the hand of God operating, thanks to the intercession of Pope Pius XII," Esposito said during a recent interview in her cheery dining room in the seaside town of Castellammare di Stabia on the Amalfi coast. "I'm convinced of it."

Doctors and church officials aren't so sure.

Esposito's local bishop, Monsignor Felice Cece, summoned Esposito earlier this year to testify about her recovery to determine if indeed it was medically inexplicable, one of the key thresholds required by the Vatican to determine if a miracle occurred.

After consulting two outside doctors, Cece determined that Esposito could have been cured by even a single cycle of chemo and essentially closed the case.

But Esposito's supporters, led by Marchione, have gone over the bishop's head and are sending her full medical file directly to the Vatican's saint-making office for review.

"I was saved. I thank the Lord," said Esposito. "If he did something for me, then I now want to do something for him."
The Rev. Peter Gumpel, the Jesuit historian who has spearheaded Pius' saint-making cause for some two decades, said the case was under consideration but was noncommittal.

"We are at the very first preliminary stages of pre-investigation, and we are not even sure whether it will go ahead," he said, stressing that regardless the process is still years away from fruition.

The Vatican's saint-making process has long been subject to skeptics' doubts.

CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA, Italy (AP) â€" Maria Esposito was ready to give up. Wasted away at 42 kilos (92 pounds), she couldn't bear another dose of chemotherapy to fight the Stage IV Burkitt's lymphoma that had invaded her body while she was pregnant with her second child.

But as she and her family had done since she was diagnosed with the rare and aggressive form of cancer in July 2005, Esposito prayed to the man who had appeared to her husband in a dream as the only person who could save her: Pope Pius XII.

Esposito survived, cured after a single, six-week cycle of chemotherapy â€" a recovery that, she says, stunned her doctors and convinced her that the World War II-era pope had intervened with God to save her.

Esposito's case, which the 42-year-old teacher recounted to The Associated Press in her first media interview, has been proposed to the Vatican as the possible miracle needed to beatify Pius, one of the most controversial sainthood causes under way, given that many Jews say he failed to speak out enough to stop the Holocaust.

Pius' main biographer, American Sister Margherita Marchione, has championed Esposito's miracle case and personally presented it to the Vatican's No. 2 official, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

Pope Benedict XVI moved Pius one step closer to possible sainthood in December 2009 when he confirmed that Pius lived a life of "heroic" Christian virtue. All that is needed now is for the Vatican to determine a "miracle" occurred.

Many a proud mama and papa have deemed their tot advanced or ahead of the game, but most babes are only geniuses in their parents' eyes. However, some tots actually are branded as gifted. Is yours? There are a few developmental guidelines that often indicate giftedness in children, so here are ten signs that your child may be headed to the head of the class.

•   Retains Information: The term "in one ear and out the other" seems to apply to most children. Those who are a cut above when it comes to intelligence actually retain a wide variety of information and are able to recall it at a later time. An example from the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) is: "One six-year-old returned from a trip to the space museum and reproduced an accurate drawing of a space rocket he had seen."

•   Wide Spectrum of Interests: Gifted kiddos display an interest in a wide variety of topics. They may like dinosaurs one month, space the next month, and so fourth.

•   Writes and Reads Early: If your tot is a smarty pants, she may be able to read and write very early on and without having had any real formal teaching.

•   Is Musically or Artistically Talented: Children who display an unusual talent for music and/or art are often considered gifted. Tots who can draw things to perspective, have perfect pitch, or display any other higher perception of forms of art usually fall into the gifted category.

•   Shows Periods of Intense Concentration: Children are not known for their long attention span, but gifted wee ones are able to have longer periods of intense concentration.

•   Has a Good Memory: Some gifted tots are able to remember things from when they were smaller. For example, a two-year-old may remember and bring up (unprovoked) an occurrence from when he was 18-months.

•   Has an Advanced Vocabulary: A tot who's early to speak is not a sign of giftedness alone, but if your lil talker is using advanced vocabulary and sentences, then he or she may be as bright as you think. According to the NAGC, "Children at age two make sentences like: 'There's a doggie.' A two-year-old who is gifted might say, 'There's a brown doggie in the backyard and he's sniffing our flower.' "

•   Pays Attention to Details: A gifted child has a keen eye for details. An older child may want to know specific details about how things work, while a younger child will be able to put away toys exactly where he got them from or notice if something has been moved from its usual spot.

•   Acts as His Own Critic: In general kids are not too worried about themselves or others, unless their friend has something they want. Gifted kids are the opposite and are concerned with others, but are most critical of themselves.

•   Understands Complex Concepts: Tots who are highly intelligent have the ability to understand complex concepts, perceive relationships, and think abstractly. They are able to understand problems in depth and think about solutions. -- http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/parenting/10-signs-your-child-may-be-gifted-2500544/

MELBOURNE, Fla. â€" Bank contractors, inspectors and even the new owner of a foreclosed home walked past the silver Chevy Nova in the garage numerous times before discovering the former homeowner â€" dead on the front seat.

After the 57-year-old woman was found, possibly more than a year after her death, it took law enforcement officials months more to positively identify Kathryn Norris Kunzweiler's skeletal remains.

Now, after DNA testing on a strand of hair, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office has closed the case and ruled out foul play. Instead, the investigative report paints a picture of a lonely, disabled woman who hoarded furniture, boxes and paperwork and eventually became a victim of her own paranoia.

"During most of my investigations, I find myself learning that most neighbors don't know much about each other," said homicide agent Marlon Buggs, who led the investigation. "Society has changed, and neighbors don't communicate like they did in the past.

"In this case, she was a solitary person who was unemployed, twice divorced and did not have any close friends or children."

On Nov. 18, 2010, new homeowner and investor Matthew Everly of Melbourne arrived at Cherie Down Lane in Cape Canaveral to inspect and change the locks on a home he purchased the day before at a real estate auction.

Everly, who since has repaired the home and sold it, told investigators he entered the residence through the garage, noted the Silver Nova and then spent about 20 minutes inside home before returning to to the garage.

That's when he looked into the car, saw the remains and called the sheriff's office.

"I was just about done changing the locks and was talking to some of the neighbors outside about how she just disappeared," Everly said. "The neighbors couldn't understand where she went and there were a lot of theories being thrown around."

Homicide agents said it appeared that Kunzweiler had been sleeping in her car. There was a sheet and pillow on the back seat and a partially burned candle on the center console.

They learned that she had not used electricity since Aug. 16, 2009 â€" a full 15 months before she was discovered â€" about three weeks after she contacted the Sheriff's Office to complain that her neighbors and ex-husband had tampered with her vehicle and disabled it.

Deputies noted there had been no criminal mischief to her vehicle, only that it did not start. They also noted in the report that she appeared to suffer from mental illness.

The investigators learned Kunzweiler was receiving disability benefits based on her mental disorder and found documents that described her condition as causing her to become reclusive and fearful of going outdoors.

Deputies had been called to the home in March by a distant relative who had been contacted by the mortgage company, Wells Fargo, about missed payments.

They reported seeing no sign of a break-in and checked the windows for bugs that might indicate a death inside. On April 5, Wells Fargo took control of the home and sent a contractor to take photos and do an inspection.

The bank then hired a property management firm to look after the property, and monthly visits and inspections started in May. A company representative told investigators he took photos of the car, but never saw the remains. -- http://www.usatoday.com/

IBP urges sheriff to press charges against Duterte
By Nikko Dizon
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:50 pm | Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Integrated Bar of the Philippines  national president Roan Libarios said Saturday he was urging court sheriff Abe Andres to file a disciplinary complaint against Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte for punching him a few times in the face for doing his job.

“(Duterte) could be subject to  disciplinary action by the IBP independent of her duties as a public official, which falls under the DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government),” Libarios told the Inquirer by phone when sought for comment on Duterte’s beating of Andres on Friday.

Being a lawyer, Duterte is automatically under the authority of the IBP.

“I encourage (Andres) to file a complaint. Filing a case against her would test the limits of the exercise of her power as a public official who happens to be a lawyer,” Libarios added.

Libarios said he would rather not give a comment on behalf of the IBP on Duterte’s actions because it might be considered prejudicial if and when someone files a disbarment case against the city mayor.

It would be the IBP that would try and decide a disbarment case.

The IBP has a Committee on Bar Discipline which all lawyers in the country are subject to.

Human rights lawyer Theodore Te said it would have to be Andres who should file a disciplinary case against Duterte because he was the aggrieved party.

Te, who had earlier expressed outrage over the mayor’s action, said that Duterte would be made to account for her actions, and that the state can file a complaint for direct assault or physical injuries against Duterte, on behalf of Andres, through the Supreme Court or the Office of the Court Administrator.

Still, Te said, any complaint would need the cooperation of Andres.

On Friday, Andres said he would not file any complaint against Duterte yet and would wait for the consensus of court sheriffs, as well as advice from the Sheriffs’ Confederation of the Philippines, before deciding on his course of action.

Duterte punched Andres three to four times in the face in a fit of anger. She said Andres ignored her request that the demolition of illegal shanties in Davao City’s Agdao district be delayed for two hours.

Today’s marking of the nation’s freedom day could inevitably provoke the Boholanos’ thought of freedom from want because the incumbent leadership has inherited a Capitol tagging Bohol a poor Philippine province. Bohol, Zamboanga del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Maguindanao and Masbate had been “consistently included in the bottom cluster of provinces” in reference statistical years 2003, 2006 and 2009. This was according to the 2009 Official Poverty Statistics of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) presented just last February. Chatto assumed as governor only in July last year.

Bohol was also in the top eight provinces having the most number of poor families with 90,735 families in 2003 to 102,522 families in 2009. NSCB secretary-general Dr. Romulo Virola noted that in provinces, poverty incidence correlates highly with per capita expenditure on education, culture and sports/manpower development, total income and total expenditure. This suggests, according to the NSCB official, that poverty reduction strategies should be geared towards higher income but also higher expenditure level. With reports from Ven rebo Arigo)

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology, the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

Healthy ecosystems and environments provide vital goods and services to humans and other organisms. There are two major ways of reducing negative human impact and enhancing ecosystem services. The first is environmental management; this approach is based largely on information gained from earth science, environmental science, and conservation biology. The second approach is management of human consumption of resources, which is based largely on information gained from economics.

Sustainability interfaces with economics through the social and ecological consequences of economic activity. Sustainability economics involves ecological economics where social, cultural, health-related and monetary/financial aspects are integrated. Moving towards sustainability is also a social challenge that entails international and national law, urban planning and transport, local and individual lifestyles and ethical consumerism. Ways of living more sustainably can take many forms from reorganising living conditions (e.g., ecovillages, eco-municipalities and sustainable cities), reappraising economic sectors (permaculture, green building, sustainable agriculture), or work practices (sustainable architecture), using science to develop new technologies (green technologies, renewable energy), to adjustments in individual lifestyles that conserve natural resources. --Wiki

The crocodile sits contentedly with his prize clamped between his jaws

As he reached through iron railings, the 17-year-old Nile crocodile lunged and snapped off his arm at the elbow.

Stunned colleagues applied a tourniquet to the shocked vet as the croc wandered off with the limb in its jaws. A worker fired two bullets at it to kill it so the arm could be retrieved, but he missed.

The sound of the gunfire, however, caused the crocodile to drop its anticipated snack and a courageous official jumped into the pen and retrieved the arm, which was packed in ice.

After a seven-hour reattachment operation, doctors were confident that it would be a success, but warned Mr Po-yu that because they had to remove damaged bone and skin, his arm would be shorter than before. -- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

As he waved a cheerful salute from his hospital bed yesterday, Chang Po-yu was restricted to using his right arm.

The left had just been re-attached after spending several minutes in a crocodile’s mouth.

Mr Po-yu, a 28-year-old vet at a zoo in Taiwan, had the arm severed at the elbow as he tried to treat the fearsome 31-stone, 18ft creature with antibiotics because it had lost its appetite.

Guazetto di Rane (Frog Leg Stew)
Recipe copyright 2000, Mario Batali. All Rights Reserved.

Yield:  4 servings

Ingredients

•   2 tablespoons plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
•   1 1/2 pounds frog legs, skinned and rinsed in several changes of cold water
•   Salt and pepper
•   1 onion, coarsely chopped
•   1 carrot, coarsely chopped
•   1 rib celery, coarsely chopped
•   1/4 cup 00-grade flour
•   1 cup dry white wine
•   1 cup canned tomatoes, crushed by hand

Directions

Pat the frog legs dry and season them aggressively with salt and pepper. In a Dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over high heat until smoking. Add the frog legs and sear until dark golden brown on all sides. Remove the frog legs to a plate lined with paper towels and set aside.

In the same pan, place the onion, carrot and celery and cook over high heat until the vegetables are browned and soft. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and cook, stirring for another 2 minutes. Add the white wine and stir with a wooden spoon to dislodge the browned bits at the bottom of the pan. Add the tomatoes and remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil, bring to a boil, season with salt and pepper and return the frog legs to the pan. Reduce to a simmer, cook for another 10 minutes, then remove from heat. Divide evenly among 4 warmed pasta bowls and serve immediately. -- http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/mario-batali/guazetto-di-rane-frog-leg-stew-recipe/index.html

Ingredients

4 frog legs
1/2 small onion, finely sliced
1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsps ginger, peeled and finely sliced
1/2 green papaya or 1 chayote, peeled and cubed
1 cup fresh spinach leaves
4 cups water
2 tbsps vegetable oil
1 tbsp fish sauce
salt and pepper

Procedure

Cut frog legs into two parts.

In a deep pot, heat vegetable oil. Saute onions, garlic and ginger until tender and aromatic.

Add in frog legs. Saute until lightly browned. Add fish sauce. Lower heat and continue to cook until juices seep through.

Add water. Simmer until frog legs are almost cooked. Skim off any scum that aggregates on top. Add papaya or chayote. Continue to simmer until vegetables are tender.

USA and Canada / A $100 Million ATM Receipt
July 02, 2011, 09:14:37 AM
by Mike Krumboltz
Thursday, June 30, 2011

Scrooge McDuck lives. An ATM receipt showing a balance of nearly $100 million dollars was discovered at an East Hampton Village bank.

A customer found the receipt hanging out of the ATM's slot. The customer who found the receipt showed it to financial blog Dealbreaker.com. The receipt, dated June 18, doesn't list the account holder's name but does indicate that the person has $99,864,731.94 in a personal savings account (that's after a $400 withdrawal and a $2.75 service charge). The East Hamptons is a well known playground for the very wealthy.

Is the receipt a mistake of some kind? Perhaps. Anyone with that amount of cash would know that keeping $100 million in a savings account isn't the wisest investment move. Savings accounts earn paltry interest rates and are only guaranteed by the federal government for amounts up to $250,000.

A buzzy article from The New York Post speculates that the holder of the account may be billionaire mogul David Tepper (Forbes lists him as the 208th richest person in the world). When contacted by The New York Post, Tepper denied ownership of the receipt and pointed out that he "would never do something as irresponsible as leaving $100 million in a savings account."

Maybe it really was Scrooge McDuck? -- http://finance.yahoo.com/

History / Thigh tourniquet, Roman, 199 BCE-500 CE
July 02, 2011, 08:06:15 AM

Credits: Science Museum London

A tourniquet is used to control bleeding, especially during amputations. It is a device that is still in use today. This example was used on the thigh and is made from bronze. Many of the straps have engraved patterns and originally the bronze would have been coated with leather to make the patient as comfortable as possible. The tourniquet came from the private collection of Dr Noel Hamonic (active 1850-1928), and was sold by Hamonic’s sons in two parts to Henry Wellcome, the first in June 1928 for £4,400 and the second in July 1928 for £803. The collection consisted mostly of surgical instruments and pharmacy ware.
