History / The Belated Khmer Rouge Trials
July 17, 2011, 09:02:51 AM

Posted by Daniel Flynn Bio â†" on Jul 8th, 2011

Kill another human being, you will likely spend many years locked away. Murder millions and you will likely evade punishment entirely. The belated trial of surviving leaders of the Khmer Rouge conducted by the United Nations and Cambodia affirms this paradox.

From 1975 to 1979, the Pol Pot -led Khmer Rouge transformed Cambodia into a human slaughterhouse. The Maoist government killed roughly 20 percent of the population, about 1.5 million people, during its brief but bloody rule. The militant atheists forced Muslims to eat pork, killed every other Cambodian Catholic, and felled the population of Buddhist monks from 60,000 to 1,000. The Khmer Rouge abolished money, emptied cities, imposed a drab black national uniform, executed the handicapped as shirkers, and outlawed eyeglasses as a vain capitalist accessory. In their violent wake, the Khmer Rouge left a ravaged population in which women outnumbered men by two to one and minors nearly outnumbered the remaining adults.

Perhaps the strangest thing about these strange atrocities is that nobody was ever really held accountable. Attempting to right this wrong is the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, which is currently trying a case against top officials of the Khmer Rouge government.

The court trying four of the surviving leaders of the Cambodian Communist Party is a joint creation of the United Nations and Cambodia. The defendants in the ongoing trial are “Brother Number Two” Nuon Chea , head of state Khieu Samphan , foreign minister Ieng Sary , and Sary’s wife, the minister of social action, Ieng Thirith . The charges against the foursome include genocide, crimes against humanity, religious persecution, war crimes, torture, and murder. The regime’s leader, Pol Pot, died of a heart attack in the custody of fellow Communist guerrillas in 1998.

The trial overflows with controversy. The visual of the infirm accusedâ€"with Pol Pot deputy Nuon Chea even wearing a winter cap in the air-conditioned courtroom to go along with his ever-present sunglassesâ€"departing the proceedings for the comfort of their cells has provoked competing reactions. Adding jail time to the punishment of Father Time appears as overkill to some. Others have difficulty finding sympathy for people who engineered the murders of so many. With the ages of the defendants ranging from 79 to 84, whatever time they spend behind bars will certainly be brief.

Australian scientists have helped develop a new definition for seawater to help research into climate change.

The research involved the country's national scientific organisation, the CSIRO

Linda Hunt reports that understanding how oceans behave is an important tool in climate research.

An international team led by the CSIRO's Dr Trevor McDougal says the new definition for seawater is the biggest development in the science for 30 years. He says it provides a more accurate calculation of salinity and ocean temperatures.

"I'd say it's as accurate as we'll be able to do it for many years."

Scientists are excited about the implications for climate modelling, including oceanographer Dr Susan Wijffels. "Getting up to this next level of accuracy I think is going to help us do a much better job of understanding what's happening in the deep ocean."

The new definition of seawater is now being explained to scientists around the world. -- http://australianetworknews.com/

Kidnappers call US victims' kin: Philippine police
(AFP) â€" 11 hours ago

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines â€" Kidnappers have contacted the family of two US citizens abducted in the Philippines to make an "unbelievable" ransom demand, the Filipino official handling the hostage crisis said Saturday.

The official, Zamboanga city Mayor Celso Lobregat, said the identity of the gunmen and the situation of the hostages, who also included one Filipino relative, was still unknown despite the phonecall.

"Contact has been made to the husband in the United States. And the contact was that that there is a demand," Lobregat told reporters in this southern port, adding that the call was made on Thursday.

"The call was very short and it was cut off (presumably by the kidnappers)," he said, adding there was no word if any deadline was set.

He described the demand made as an "unbelievable amount", without giving further details.

Filipino police said gunmen snatched Gerfa Lunsmann, 50, her 14-year-old son, Kevin, and her Filipino teenage nephew on Tuesday at a nearby island resort.

The woman was born in the area but left in her childhood for adoption in the United States, where she later married a US-based German man, local police have said.

The resort is a mere 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the coast of Basilan island, a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, a small Islamic militant group blamed for previous abductions of foreigners, as well as deadly bombings.

Apart from the militants, the near-lawless region is also home to Muslim separatist guerrillas, bandits and pirates.

Kidnapping of locals and foreigners for ransom occurs with alarming frequency in the area.

Lobregat said the information about the ransom demand was relayed by the US government to Filipino police who are searching for the kidnappers and their hostages. -- http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/

Even though albinism exists in Europe and North America, where it affects one in 20,000 people, it is far more widespread in Africa. One of the continent's music stars, Salif Keita from Mali, is an albino. One study has put the Tanzanian ratio at one in 4,000 people. Kimaya believes there are 370,000 albinos in Tanzania. Some researchers have suggested that the source of the albino gene can be traced to the east coast of Africa.

Despite government efforts and growing pressure from abroad, including a motion condemning the events in Tanzania in September in the European Parliament, the country's albinos are still living in fear.

Kwegyir was an activist for the ruling party and an information officer at Dar es Salaam airport before becoming an MP. She said there was an urgent need for the international community to support albinos: 'If we can have skin creams, books and spectacles, this will help us to lead more normal lives and to come out of the shadows and combat prejudice.'

For the moment the safety of albinos is her prime concern. 'On 19 October we staged a demonstration in Dar es Salaam to raise awareness of our situation. Many people were brave and came out. But that same evening one of the demonstrators was followed home, grabbed, and the assailants tried to hack off one of her arms. This was left hanging and later had to be amputated. The attackers cut off the other arm and ran away.

'Now she is living in constant terror because she won't be able to fight back if they come after her a second time.' -- http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/nov/16/tanzania-humanrights

Kimaya's society, probably Africa's oldest albino association, set up in 1980, feels powerless in the face of the attacks. 'The people who are killing us are witch doctors or agents for them. What is happening is mad and horrible,' Kimaya said.

Kimaya said the superstition of money-making had always existed but used to be confined to remote areas. Tanzania's recent minerals boom, which has attracted thousands of people to try their luck in small-scale mining, may have contributed to the spread of the belief. Murders are now also reported in neighbouring countries and Kikwete has asked other heads of state in the Southern African Development Community to act to stamp out the killings.

Last week the Daily News reported the arrest of a 35-year-old fisherman at Lake Tanganyika who had allegedly attempted to sell his 24-year-old albino wife to two businessmen from the Democratic Republic of Congo for 3.6m shillings (about £2,000). Another report told of a man caught at the border carrying a bag containing a baby's head. He told police that a Tanzanian witch doctor had offered to pay him according to the weight of the head.

More than 170 people, most of them witch doctors, have been arrested in Tanzania this year; 53 are in custody, but Kimaya wants firmer, swifter action. 'We need money to pay a lawyer. The government has ordered the police to carry out a census of albinos, so that we know how many of us there are,' he said.

'They have also been instructed to work with villagers to protect us and to escort albino children to school. It is a big step forward, but we urgently need prosecutions to begin so that Tanzanians hear of this injustice,' added Kimaya, who is one of three albino siblings out of seven children in his family. He is married to a black woman and their four children are black.

A relative haven of safety for Tanzania's albinos is the small park outside the single-storey wards of Dar es Salaam's Cancer Institute. In alleys leading between the wards, albinos with bandages on their heads and feet, or slings on their arms, wait for check-ups.

They have russet-coloured hair and milky-white skin, but their facial features are African. Many are covered in welts, scabs and burns. Cancer is their greatest killer and, whereas albinos in developed countries can hope to live until normal old age, Africans who have the condition rarely survive beyond the age of 40.

Zihada Msembo said her greatest enemy used to be the sun. Now she walks in fear wherever she goes. 'In the streets you hear people plotting. They say "look at the zeru [ghost]. We can get him". We are terrified to go outside or to get into our beds at night.'

The hospital's rundown gatehouse is the home of the Tanzanian Albino Society. Its chairman, Ernest Kimaya, 42, said the organisation ran on an annual government grant which he summarised as 'equal to a week's tea budget at State House'. Albinos need skin creams, spectacles and large-print books, but they receive no funding for these. Kimaya wears glasses but at his computer his nose is less than 10cm from the screen.

He said Tanzanian albinos had always faced discrimination in schools or in the workplace. 'People believe a woman who has an albino child has been cursed and that the whole family will now suffer bad luck. In olden days midwives killed the babies at birth but now that there are health centres, albino babies do survive.'

Kwegyir, 48, had met Salma in her village in the Mwanga district near Kilimanjaro. 'It is the first cannibalistic case, but in other respects it is a classic example. Someone in the extended family who has links with a witch doctor will help set up the abduction or killing. These murders are inspired by ignorance and greed. An albino hand is selling for two million shillings (£1,200),' she said.

Despite government moves to protect albinos - who have an inherited gene disorder which results in a lack of pigmentation and can produce near-blindness - the targeted murders, which were first reported a year ago, are continuing. 'Two weeks pass and we think it's getting better, then another one happens,' said Kwegyir, who was appointed to parliament in April by President Jakaya Kikwete in order to combat prejudice.

The murders are the result of seemingly conflicting beliefs spread by witch doctors, who are still consulted by many of Tanzania's 40 million-strong population, that albinos are either cursed or have supernatural properties. Some fishermen believe that, if they weave the red hair from an albino into their nets, fish will be attracted by the golden glimmer. Miners for gold, rubies and tanzanite are reported to pay large sums for juju (magic) amulets, which they wear around their necks or strapped to their arms and which are made up with a potion mixed from albino body parts. Others are said to bury the bones of albinos in the ground they are digging.

Albino Africans live in fear after witch-doctor butchery
by Alex Duval Smith, The Observer, Sunday 16 November 2008

A series of horrific murders of albinos in Tanzania has shocked the nation. As children are hacked to death for their body parts, believed to bring good luck, the authorities are failing to stop a trade in organs that relies on superstition and greed.

The Tanzanian MP recounts the appalling story in a tone of sadness and horror. A woman named Salma had been told by her family to dress her baby entirely in black and to lay the little girl in a hut, alone. 'The mother didn't understand, but she obeyed the elders,' said Al-Shaymaa Kwegyir.

'Some hours later, unknown men arrived and went straight to the hut. They used a machete to cut off the child's legs. Then they slit her throat and poured the blood into a pot and drank it.'

Amid a spate of at least 29 murders of albinos in Tanzania, Kwegyir, herself an albino, has become one of the country's most prominent political campaigners on the issue. She cited evidence that killers acting for witch doctors are turning to cannibalism alongside their quest for lucrative body parts as magic charms.

Buyers from as far away as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya and Uganda believe the legs, genitals, eyes and hair of people with albinism can help them achieve instant wealth. The youngest victim so far was seven months old.

History / Quarantine
July 16, 2011, 08:42:28 PM

In the 14th century the growth of maritime trade and the recognition that plague was introduced by ships returning from the Levant led to the adoption of quarantine in Venice. It was decreed that ships were to be isolated for a limited period to allow for the manifestation of the disease and to dissipate the infection brought by persons and goods. Originally the period was 30 days, trentina, but this was later extended to 40 days, quarantina. The choice of this period is said to be based on the period that Christ and Moses spent in isolation in the desert. In 1423 Venice set up its first lazaretto, or quarantine station, on an island near the city. The Venetian system became the model for other European countries and the basis for widespread quarantine control for several centuries. -- http://listverse.com/

Excerpt from a Cebu Daily News item:

In a low-cut white lace dress, black stockings and gray half boots, Santos, with her Louis Vuitton handbag, was not the typical witness in the somber courtroom.

Minutes before her turn came up, she exchanged sharp words with a police officer and challenged PO3 Angelito Yaun of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to a fistfight.

Yaun was one of the police officers who applied for the search warrant to raid her house. Police seized a Mitsubishi Pajero later found to be registered in Santos’ name and which is suspected to be the vehicle used in Ellah Joy’s abduction.

Santos’ lawyers yesterday filed perjury charges against CIDU-7′s Willard Selibio, PO3 Yaun, and private witnesses Richard Ian Bruce Bansuan and Ligaya Escultos before the Cebu Provincial Prosecutors’ Office for allegedly “fabricating” allegations that had led the judge to issue a search warrant.

Santos, who was seated on a bench beside her lawyer, approached PO3 Yaun who was standing near her and apparently starting.

“Nagdako man lang nang imong mata (Your eyes are big),” she said.

Yaun retorted, “Ngano man, ang imo gamay?” (Why, are your eyes small?)

In an interview later, Santos said she was just reacting to Yaun’s tuant: “Tuo ka mahadlok ko nimo?” (You think I’m afraid of you?)

To which the woman allegedly replied: “Wala man man ko nahadlok nimo. Kon isog ka sumbaga ko karon.” (I’m not afraid of you. If you are so brave, punch me). Bella said Yaun reportedly told her, “Sumbagon tika sa gawas.” (I will punch you outside).

Noodle-Light Theory

Perhaps one of the more important of the recent theories in the field of Pastafarianism is PENILE (shorthand "noggin" speak for "Pastafarian-Encouraged Noodle-Influenced Light Effect"). The maths involved in fully explaining this effect is completely incomprehensible to anyone but doctors, or someone wearing a hat that has "Doctor" or some derivative thereof written on it; however, the overall effect is simple, logical, and impervious to criticism. Quite simply, light traveling from a light source (the sun, a flashlight, or This guy) is influenced by the Flying Spaghetti Monster according to His will, and then received by our undeserving eyeballs. How this influencing comes about is as of yet uncertain - current theories range from interception and retransmission, to an external quantum transfer of information, to "just because He damn well wants to" - however, the end result is certain: we only see what He wants us to see.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is typically depicted as a clump of tangled spaghetti with two eyestalks, two meatballs, and noodly appendages. This iconic image, Touched by His Noodly Appendage, was originally created in August 2005 by the Swedish designer Niklas Jansson as a parody of Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam. The image has become the de facto brand image for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. --Wiki

VIENNA â€" Niko Alm wanted to test an Austrian law saying that head coverings would only be allowed in official documents for religious reasons.

So the tongue-in-cheek atheist applied for a new driver's license in his country with a photo of himself wearing a pasta strainer as headgear. Alm said he was a "pastafarian" and that the headpiece was required by his religion.

The application process took three years, but Alm said Thursday that he's now got his new license.

Police officials in the mostly Catholic country did not sound amused.

WARSAW (AFP) â€" Vampires, the devil's deceit and mental illness are among the hot topics for some 300 exorcists who flocked to Poland this week from as far away as Africa and India for a week-long congress.

Held at Poland's Roman Catholic Jasna Gora monastery, home to the venerated Black Madonna icon, this year's congress "examines the current fashion for vampirism in Europe and the world-over, schizophrenia and other mental disorders as well as the devil's deceit during exorcism," according to the monastery's radio station.

Also attending are "priests and lay people who work with exorcists or who are themselves practitioners in cases which do not involve possession but rather other forms of harassment by evil spirits," Polish exorcist, Father Andrzej Grefkowicz was quoted as saying.

Hailing from India, world-renowned exorcist Father Rufus Pereira as well as chief exorcist of the Archdiocese of Vienna Larry Hogan are among the participants, the radio reported. The unusual meeting is held once every two years.

The Jasna Gora monastery's venerated Black Madonna icon is believed by many Poles to work miracles.

Legend has it that it was painted by the apostle Saint Luke on a table top from the home of the Holy Family, according to the Jasna Gora website. Records suggest the icon arrived in Poland during the 14th century.

With around 90 percent of the population declaring themselves Roman Catholic, Poland remains one of Europe's most devout countries. -- http://oddnews.org/

The 1815 eruption [of mount Tambora] is rated 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, the only such eruption since the Lake Taupo eruption in about 180 AD. With an estimated ejecta volume of 160 cubic kilometers, Tambora's 1815 outburst was the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The explosion was heard on Sumatra island (more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) away). Heavy volcanic ash falls were observed as far away as Borneo, Sulawesi, Java and Maluku islands. Most deaths from the eruption were from starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout ruined agricultural productivity in the local region. The death toll was at least 71,000 people (the most deadly eruption in recorded history), of whom 11,000â€"12,000 were killed directly by the eruption; the often-cited figure of 92,000 people killed is believed to be overestimated. The eruption created global climate anomalies that included the phenomenon known as "volcanic winter": 1816 became known as the "Year Without a Summer" because of the effect on North American and European weather. Agricultural crops failed and livestock died in much of the Northern Hemisphere, resulting in the worst famine of the 19th century. --Wiki

History / The Year Without a Summer
July 16, 2011, 12:22:01 PM
The Year Without a Summer (also known as the Poverty Year, Year There Was No Summer, and Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death) was 1816, in which severe summer climate abnormalities caused average global temperatures to decrease by about 0.4â€"0.7 °C (0.7â€"1.3 °F), resulting in major food shortages across the Northern Hemisphere. It is believed that the anomaly was caused by a combination of a historic low in solar activity with a volcanic winter event, the latter caused by a succession of major volcanic eruptions capped off by the Mount Tambora eruption of 1815, the largest known eruption in over 1,300 years. --Wiki

MORE FACTS 2

- Laughing relaxes and expands blood vessels, which helps protect the heart.

- A person is more likely to have a heart attack on Monday morning than on any other day of the week.

- Physicians call morning time “the witching time” for heart attacks because the mornings are when most people suffer heart attack. In the morning, stress hormones, such as cortisol, peak. Additionally, blood is thicker and harder to pump because a person is partially dehydrated.

- Women who smoke face the risk of heart attack 19 years earlier than the non-smokers.

- Studies from over 20 countries show that moderate drinkers have 20-40% less coronary heart diseases than non-drinkers.

- People with poor oral health may be more likely to have atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) because the bacteria in the gums and teeth can enter the bloodstream and affect blood clotting.

- Worldwide, nearly one-third (8.6 million) of all deaths in women are from heart diseases.

- The risk of heart attack or stroke is higher for women who both smoke and use high-dose birth control pills.

- A statistical study in Wales found that having an orgasm at least three times a week may decrease by half the risk of a man dying from coronary heart disease. (Ven rebo Arigo)

MORE FACTS 1

Other studies and researches have found these out about heart disease:

- It is one of the lading causes of death for Filipino Americans.

- Filipino Americans have higher blood pressure than other Asian Americans.

- TV watching (physical inactivity) is another modern habit/factor causing heart disease, although CT scans of mummies reveal that heart disease was frequent in ancient Egypt.

- A Danish study claims that men and women with thighs that measure less than 23.62 inches (60 cm) in circumference have high risk of developing heart disease.

- Researchers suggest that those who stay up late may be prone to heart disease even if they get eight hours’ sleep. Women who sleep five hours or less a night are 39% more likely to develop heart disease than women who get eight hours. All these are possibly due to habits or events associated with late night or short sleep hours rather than the time factors themselves.

- People who live alone are twice as likely to have heart attack or sudden cardiac death as those who live with a partner or roommate.

- Negative emotions and depression are risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Conversely, happier people are less likely to develop heart disease.

- A woman’s resting pulse rate is a good indicator of her risk of heart attack. Women with high heart rates, at or above 76 beats per minute, are more likely to suffer heart attack than women with lower resting pulse rates (62 beats per minute or less).

- Heart drugs may have serious interactions with herbal supplements such as ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort, and garlic.

- Menopausal women are at higher risk for developing heart disease because their bodies produce less estrogen.

HURTING TO THE HEART

According to expert sources, certain factors raise the risk of heart attack, but the major ones that individuals cannot change include age, gender and heredity.

Four out of five deaths from the disease involve people over age 65. In this age bracket, women are twice as likely to die from heart attack as men.

Women are more likely to die from heart disease than from all forms of cancer, chronic lung disease, pneumonia, diabetes, accidents and AIDS combined.

However, men have a greater life-long risk of heart attack, and experience attacks earlier in life.

Of the daily death toll per 100,000 women in the Philippines, 80 are caused by heart diseases.

Children have great risk if their parents had heart disease.

The three biggest risk factors that one can do something about are cigarette smoking, high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol level.

About one in four Filipino adults has high blood pressure.

Other risk factors, such as obesity, being overweight, having diabetes and physical inactivity, also are conditions that individuals can control.

At least 80% of premature heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes could be prevented thru healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoidance of tobacco.

Smokers have twice as high a risk of heart attack as non-smokers, and have two to four times the risk of sudden cardiac death. They are also more likely to die quickly and suddenly than non-smokers.

TIME IS CRITICAL

Without timely diagnosis, medical guidance and lifestyle check, persons with heart ailments can suffer from more complications.

Baluyot said it is advantageous for children or young people with sick hearts to be referred to specialists at earliest stage of their ailment.

Congenital heart diseases are inborn or can be developed as a child grows older. The coronary artery disease is the most common heart ailment.

A US study says over 32,000 (one in very 125-150) infants are born with heart defects, which may go undetected for years. This condition is the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths.

In the Philippines, a study identifies rheumatic heart disease, ischemic and hypertensive heart diseases as major types involved, too, in the high mortality rate.

Next to heart diseases as top killers of Filipinos are vascular system diseases, both closely related. Stroke is the most common vascular system disease.

A heart attack occurs when a blockage is developed in one of the arteries supplying blood to the heart. A stroke is the result of the blockage in one of the arteries of the brain. In either case, the story is the same.

Missions shift to noble phase: heart operation
http://www.boholchronicle.com/2011/jul/13/front2.html
July 13, 2011

That life stops when heart stops is a concern bigger than life itself when Bohol’s biggest series of surgical-medical missions shifts to nobler, crucial phase---the open heart operation---starting tomorrow.

The complex group of heart diseases has been the Philippines’ top killer, in fact the first among the leading 10 causes of deaths in the country.

The free heart surgery at the Borja Family Hospital here until July 17 is the major part in the chain of surgical, medical and dental missions in the province that began on July 3.

The first batch of heart patients for operation will be admitted to the hospital today. A mass will be heard before the start of the surgery tomorrow.

Doctors and other medical workers from the US, Manila and Bohol have volunteered in the successive medical missions, already serving over 8,000 individuals in Panglao, Sagbayan, Carmen, Danao and Balilihan.

The four-day heart operation is the crucial phase of the series, which will end in medical missions in Dauis on July 21 and Tagbilaran City on July 22, a life-devoted way to mark exactly Bohol’s founding anniversary.

The chain of missions has the lead sponsorship and participation of the New York-based Home Reach Foundation, Inc. (Home Reach), Philippine Heart Foundation (PHF), Philippine Gift of Life (PGOL), Philippine Heart Center (PHC) and provincial government.

Gov. Edgar Chatto hailed the selflessness of the different groups led by PHF chairman and PHC consultant Dr. Ludgerio Torres, PHC chief surgeon Dr. Arturo Lomibao, and Drs. Ramie Cadag and Pepe Recitas and Toto Jabonillo of Home Reach. Cadag is the US-based chairman of PGOL.

The governor just returned from the 14th Convention of the Confederation of Boholanos in the USA and Canada (CONBUSAC), during which more medical missions in Bohol were arranged for next year.

The on-going series is also supported by the Department of Health (DOH) thru Sec. Enrique Ona and Asec. Elmer Punzalan, PCSO, Sangguniang Panlalawigan thru Acting Gov. Concepcion Lim and health committee chair Board Member Cesar Tomas Lopez, Provincial Administrator Alfonso Damalerio II, Borja Family Hospital thru Dr. Belinda Borja and Dr. Kazan Baluyot who opens a vital heart clinic there, PHO, BMS, Bohol chapters of AMHOP and PNA, LGUs, and HSS Elementary and High School batches under team leader Joseph Alagon.

Animal rights group seeks closure of zoos
By Evelyn Macairan (The Philippine Star) Updated June 07, 2006 12:00 AM

Garbed in black and white "prison suits" and wearing tiger masks, members of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a 30-minute protest in front of the Manila Zoo and Botanical Gardens to demand the liberation of caged animals.

The animal rights activists called for the return of the animals to their natural habitat. Their demonstration is part of a worldwide campaign against zoos.

Outside the gates of Manila Zoo along Adriatico street in Malate, the demonstrators lifted banners that read, "Zoos: Cruel Animal Prisons," and demanded the closure of the Manila Zoo.

They chose to hold their demonstration at the 47-year-old Manila Zoo to attract attention. The group plans to hold succeeding protests in other zoos to catch the attention of local government officials.

PETA spokesperson Jamie Alarcon said they are open to the idea of holding a dialogue with Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.

In a statement, PETA campaign manager Rochelle Regodon said animals in zoos are "serving a lifetime sentence with no parole."

"Let’s just leave them in the wild and use zoos as sanctuaries for animals rescued from circuses, marine parks and exploitative forms of entertainment."

Alarcon said. "Since our Independence Day is only one week away, we are urging the Philippines to become the first zoo-free country in the region. Since we are the first democracy here in Asia, simulan din natin ang pagpapalaya sa mga hayop."

She added a number of animals brought to zoos were uprooted from their natural surroundings and from their families at a tender age.

PETA distributed copies of their "zoochosis checklist," which encourages zoo visitors to closely observe the behavior of animals.

Questions include the following: Were the animals engaged in biting of bars of the cages; licking or repeatedly licking the bars/walls; pacing or continuous walking back and forth; neck-twisting or unnatural twisting and rolling of the neck; vomiting; circling or walking in circles; coprophagia or playing with and eating excrement; head-bobbing; over-grooming; and self mutilation or repeatedly tail-biting, leg-chewing, head bashing?

Meanwhile, Manila Zoo administrator Romulo Bernardo said over the years, they have been improving conditions and surroundings and that their effort has met international standards for animal dwellings.

"Zoos have an important educational function because by seeing animals, you will better understand them in a way you can’t see in TV or books. Children need to see animals up close in order to appreciate them, and work for their conservation," Bernardo said.

Besides, he said, zoos also serve as a center for unwanted exotic animals such as birds and snakes. "Some of those brought in were injured and might die if they are returned to the wild."

He added that most zoos are centers for captive breeding.

"Most animals are products of captive breeding programs. They lived in the wild, but can’t survive in the wild. Those animals are vanishing because of the loss of habitat," he said.

Japanese scientists have found a superbug strain of gonorrhea that’s resistant to all available antibiotics. This can pose a threat to public health worldwide, infectious disease experts say.

The international team identified the highly drug-resistant strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae â€" the bacterium that causes the sexually transmitted infection â€" through genetic analysis. Gonorrhea is one of the most common STIs in the world and can cause infertility, increase HIV transmission, and has profound effects on infants born to infected mothers, including blindness. Left untreated, the disease can be fatal. The strain is called H041 and has extreme resistance to all cephalosporin-class antibiotics, the last remaining drugs still effective in treating gonorrhea.

Prosecutors said Moses believed Higganbothan might be gay because the boy’s father had abandoned him and Sisk. When Higganbothan swatted another child’s behind, the informant told police, it seemed to confirm Moses’ belief. Moses allegedly began screaming at Sisk, “I told you to get rid of him!” and ordered two of the women to help him dispose of the child.

The informant described a horrific scene: after the women carried audio speakers into the garage, Moses played a loud music track featuring the Lord’s Prayer in Hebrew and shot Higganbothan with a gun belonging to Sisk.

In Durham, NC a fringe religious leader named Peter Lucas Moses, Jr. has been charged with the murder of Yvonne McKoy and 4 year-old Jadon Higganbothan. Moses allegedly killed Higganbothan last October because he thought the child was gay. McKoy, 28, was slain a few months later for being infertile.

WRAL reports:

Prosecutors said the case came to police’s attention in February when a young woman escaped from a house … where she had lived with McKoy, Jadon, eight other children and three women charged in connection with the two slayings … The woman, whose identity wasn’t released, told police that two people had died at the house, Durham County District Attorney Tracey Cline said.

Higganbothan was the only child in the house who wasn’t fathered by Moses, 27, although Higganbothan’s mother, Vania Rea Sisk, 25, lived with the group as one of Moses’ common-law wives. Sisk, along with the other women, referred to Moses as “Lord” and took turns sharing the master bedroom with Moses.

“Moses subscribed to the tenets of the Black Hebrews,” the News Observer reports, “a radical sect that believes a race war is coming that will leave blacks dominant and supreme, according to court documents … Homosexuality, [District Attorney Tracey Cline] contended, is frowned upon by the Black Hebrews.”

Prosecutors said Moses believed Higganbothan might be gay because the boy’s father had abandoned him and Sisk. When Higganbothan swatted another child’s behind, the informant told police, it seemed to confirm Moses’ belief. The informant described a horrific scene: after the women carried audio speakers into the garage, Moses played a loud music track featuring the Lord’s Prayer in Hebrew and shot Higganbothan with a gun belonging to Sisk.

Approximately two months later, the informant told police, Moses killed McKoy in a similar manner.

The victim’s family members told WRAL that McKoy had known Moses in high school. After Moses invited her to live with his group, they couldn’t contact her. McKoy seemed content with her living arrangements until she learned that she couldn’t have children.

WRAL reports:

[McKoy] wrote dairy entries begging “Lord” [Moses] not to kill her, prosecutors said.

On the day she died, prosecutors said, McKoy ran to a neighbor’s house and asked to use a cell phone to call her mother in Washington, D.C. The neighbor said she didn’t call police because she thought that it was a group home and that McKoy might be mentally disturbed.

Police discovered McKoy’s remains in June, alongside Higganbothan’s. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Moses, while Moses’ self-described “wives” have been brought up on charges ranging from first-degree murder to accessory to murder. The group’s children are currently in foster homes. -- http://www.care2.com/causes/leader-of-cult-like-group-charged-with-killing-infertile-woman-gay-child.html#ixzz1S95hdBd2

Swedish king in tart attack
Thursday, 6 September, 2001, 16:53 GMT 17:53 UK

King Carl Gustaf was 'surprised' by the attack

Questions are being raised in Sweden about security arrangements for the royal family after King Carl XVI Gustaf was hit in the face with a strawberry tart thrown by a 16-year-old Swedish boy.

The attack happened on Wednesday evening as the monarch was visiting a bird sanctuary near the city of Varberg, about 500 kilometres (300 miles) south-west of the capital, Stockholm.

The pastry struck the 55-year-old king full in the face, although he was not hurt.

Police arrested the teenager on suspicion of treason, according to Sweden's Radio Ekot.

A spokeswoman for the royal family, Catherine Broms, told the station it was the first time the king had suffered such an attack.

"We were on our way out from a wildlife preserve when the man threw the cake," Swedish news agency TT quoted her as saying.

The king "was surprised, but he wasn't hurt," she added. -- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1529270.stm
