Stand up for yourself then. I've stood up against my professors in microbiology and neurophysiology classes where I work in the lab as a teacher's assistant. Whenever there is something wrong, i will plainly say it, state the reason and await his response. I actually have proven my professors wrong in several occasions--even went so far as to finding out an error in research methodology--saving them thousands of dollars in grant money. Their response? They thanked me isntead of chastizing. So what if he or she will retort back, have some self decency and make your thoughts known. Theres no point in being afraid of your professor--if one is always afraid, one is prevented to progress in maturity and experience.

As for the article, its natural. The students have to learn three languages (english, tagalog and visaya). By default, there fare more experienced in the vernacular than most American students (who only speak english, with some taking courses in a 2nd language). The Filipino student knows 2 or 3.

I give them respect for that.

A new study asks an interesting genetics question: if there was a gene that controlled homosexualityâ€"and hence limited reproductionâ€"how could it be favored to exist? If there is a gene that causes one to not reproduce, natural selection would dictate that it cannot survive long in a population, since it is not being passed on to future generations. A new paper in the Proceedings of the Royal Society is using population-genetics modeling to try and answer why a theoretical gene predisposing an individual to homosexuality could spread in a population.

It needs to be mentioned that this is merely a theoretical study, and that there is no known gene that dictates one's sexuality. However, there is evidence that at some level genetics plays a role. It is known that human twins are more likely to both be gay when compared with non-identical siblings. It has also been reported that male homosexuality is often inherited from the maternal line, suggesting that a gene on the X chromosome may play some role. The question then becomes: if a gene existed that caused one to have no desire to reproduce (through heterosexual intercourse), how can this theoretical gene persist throughout generations?

The theoretical study by Gavrilets and Rice looked at a single gene with two alleles (variants) and examines three previously reported hypotheses as to how this gene can persist in a population. It should be noted that this model did not strictly classify an individual as straight or gay, but determined the level of homosexual activity by relating it to the fitness within the model. The first mechanism examined is one of overdominance, where in this scenario if the offspring only receives the 'gay allele' from one parent (heterozygous), then they would have a competitive reproductive advantage over others in the population. Here the 'gay allele' would need to be received from both parents (homozygous) in order for the offspring to exhibit homosexuality and have a reproductive disadvantage. The next hypothesis is one of kin altruism, where homosexuals would help their own family members, thereby increasing the family's fitness and allowing the gene (which would be present in the family group) to be passed on to the next generation. The final previously posited hypothesis, sexually antagonistic selection, is thatâ€"in the case of male homosexualityâ€"the allele would result in a fitness loss for male offspring, but a fitness gain in female offspring. The gain in fitness for female offspring would potentially result in more offspring in the next generation having this allele.

Through modeling of classical population-genetics equations, the authors describe the evolution and frequency of these two alleles throughout a large population. The authors find conditions in which overdominace or sexually antagonistic selection hypotheses could lead to a stable population with this homosexual gene in place when it is located on autosomes (non-sexual chromosomes) or on the X chromosome. The models found that under the sexually antagonistic selection, the homosexual allele would become very prevalent, provided that those who carried two alleles of it were generally bisexual. This is an interesting hypothesis, which seems to hearken back to the work of Kinsey in the late 1940's and early 1950's where he suggested that sexuality was a spectrum and people were not fully straight or gay, but existed somewhere in between. This work at hand represents a interesting study into the 'Darwinian paradox of male homosexuality'

please research more.define abnormality.define inborn defect.no study had proven that the manifestation of mongoloid and abno is also observed among bayots and tomboys.

The scientific community has actually made hedgeway to this. In certain case studies, there is a definite positive correlation to homosexuality and genetic predisposition. Genetics and neuroscience studies from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the most prestigious medical institution in the United States, actually noted that homosexual men have a greater prevalence of x chromosomes than heterosexuals. Researchers have looked closely at the DNA of these patients to try and find the region of the X chromosome (since the earlier research suggested that the gene was passed down maternally) that most of the homosexual brothers shared and discovered that homosexuals have a much higher likelihood of inheriting the same genetic sequence on the region of the X chromosome identified by Xq28, than heterosexuals.
Note that the x chromosome is the genetic codet for a female. Females have XX chromosomes, while males have XY chromosomes (x-being the maternal link and Y-being the paternal link).

Other studies also indicate that homosexuality is not only genetic, but also influenced by social behaviour and the environment one is brought up in. There is great dialogue about this in the halls of academia--primarily great reference to the process of: Observational Learning. That individuals aquire traits and acts via the observation of their collegues, friends, parents as the observer grows. There has been extensive case studies of male children who were raised by homosexual fathers or had homosexual friends during childhood---eventually grew up to manifest those same characteristics.

In my view, homosexuality is not a product of genetics alone, but also society and the environment one is placed it. Some of my collegues who are geneticists and neurophysiologists believe that homosexuality is a natural processes of human selection. A way of the species (homo sapien) to limit its profund growth. Externally speaking, humans have no natural predators, as humans are apex predators, with no natural enemies, the species will grow until the food sources are starved, unless something is done to 'check' it. With little to no limiting factor to provide a natural 'check', the species itself will limit itself from overgrowing---almost a case by case reference to the Malthusian concept.

As a scientist, I think that homosexuality is nature's way of inhibiting human over-growth. There needs to be a check to our parasitic species---or else our energy sources would be starved outright. The phenomenon of homosexuality is global, no nation is free of this condition, and no time in mankind's history is exempted from homosexuality's presence. Either if we research ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, Aztec, China, Japan, India, Russia etc--all had experienced it--and continue to experience it. It is nature's only answer to our species' growth.

I'm an avid novice astronomer and every night, if given the chance, I like to look at the stars through my telescope.

The heavens, in my view, is rather humbling and beautiful at the same time. The majesty of it all--imagine...beyond our milkyway, all those stars are mere suns and they have their own solar systems--with individual planets rotating about the axis point. Yet there are billions of stars---uncounted. Their formation, their lumination of the night sky.

How glorious and great is the Lord. In all his infinite wisdom that he made the world, and other worlds. That he willed hydrogen to be made so that it would creat gas and formulate the creation of planets. That he created oxygen--so that its negative charge would attach its electrons to the positive hydrogen--to form water. And from water, in his knowledge, would lead to the creation of life itself. Hence biota, taxa were manifested. The birth of a world.

Ooo gud, natural man na. Pero i think there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping one's virginity until you meet that special someone. Kai..kanang sex..it is only good for that 10 second euphoric orgasm. After that? Unsa man? Ug all they are after is for that euphoric rush, loh-loh lang. At least that way healthy and safe pa--walay threat of sexual transmitted disease, walay ma buntis diba? Even having oral sex is better--as an alternative.

In today's society--where everyone is sexualized and craved---i think its good also to act conservative. Ngano man i-rush rush man ang tao if dili siya gusto mo diritso, diba? There is time.

Mao lang na what im trying to say, hun.

Pero, i do understand your points, and i do agree with what you say.

She was in the bathroom--so that means these filthy vile pigs followed her....and flanked her. You cant tell me that there was NO ONE around at all to witness this? She was probably screaming and crying...and   there was no one around to help? No one to call for police aid at all??

What are the stories about the church in Valencia? I know that its pretty old, and that is the church that my parents were married at. Any historical facts? Rumors? Ghost stories?

The fondest memory I had of Mama Luz (dad's mama), was that when I was younger, we would go with my uncles, my sister, and my cousin Jing Jing to panglao. We would take our black jeep...and bring food with us, hahaha, all kinds of food that Mama Luz would cook (she was from Leyte, so she used to cook and bring sooo good dinuguan with puto, adobong baka, adobong chicken, menudo, kalamansi, cari cari, sinigang leytena, sweet rice etc. The whole family would go. When i was younger..i think i was like 3 or 4 (and i remember this like it was yesterday), she would feed me with her fingers..haha..and i would also try to feed my Mama Luz with my little fingers too..hahaha. She would smile and kiss my cheeks and would would rub her nose with my nose...mama Luz....

I love and really really miss my Mama Luz. She passed away in 1995, 4 years after we immigrated to the states. I wish i was there to say good bye to her....
Love you, mama Luz....always will. Mingaw ko imo...uy....

Absolutely, pare. If there is a will there is always a way, God will provide a way for those who are determined. I pray that many other foreign raised Boholanos will return to th province of our origin to make a difference.

You know, there is a high percentage of Ukrainian-American students who are going back to Ukraine to help and contribute to the political sphere in that country. So too is happening concerning Indian-Americans. Filipino-Americans need to go back and instead of running for drama, acting, and entertainment, need to go go into local government, even national government.

I really really admire his dedication, and his fire. At age 21 and be so mature at the same time, he is truly a natural born leader. I hope he maintains his charisma for time to come. We could be seeing a man who will one day become another President. Garcia....

Time will tell.

haha, Mike.

No, no girlfriend in Ukraine, but many friends. The dubai connection is friendship-based lang. I cherish the frienship, haha.

Mike, mo smile lang ko uy. Life is very unpredictable---pero we do what we can in the time being. If the good Lord wills that i will be a physician, then it will be so. He is the only one that decides who or what happens. But the Lord is kind and provides a way for our prayers to be answered, diba pare? I hope that all of yours will come true. Mike, you should consider teaching international policy in US when you finish your PhD. As a Filipino and with experience in Thailand and in the ASEAN region, as for being young, you will provide a fresh and new view. Students will clamor to take one of your classes.

May your path always be straight and your way lit.

I'll do what I can right now, either it be donations or contributions. But I do one day want to go back to Valencia. Probably when I'm around 40 or so.

If I am killed while pursuing a dream, then, what better way to die. We all die, Mike, the only difference is the matter in which we choose to die. I'd rather go head on.

My love for my hometown far exceeds my own life. I am only a mere speck in the scheme of things.

Mike,

I feel the same way in regard to the United States as well. Before I studied abroad in Ukraine in 2006, my views of the United States was, how can i say this...very domestic. When I was in Ukraine and engrossed into the society, talking and associating with fellow students from Austria, Germany, Spain, Japan, S.Korea, Indonesia, India and Russia---I had the chance to exchange information. They all gave me their views of the United States and vice versa. It was very enlightening as I was exposed to some policies that the U.S enacted on, which was protested by other states: per se the global rejection of the invasion of Iraq, policies related to Israel, global warming, military arm sales etc. It was beautiful, being able to share and get new information. And you are right, Mike, when we get out of the country and live in a foreign country for sometime, our views do change. Alot.

Mike, i think that is a great idea for you to pursue a Ph.D in international relations. Theres so much possibilities with that, and with your skills and knowledge in the region, you'll do great.
So soon we'll be addressing you as Prof. Mike, eh? hahaha :)

Interesting article.

They should test it on chimps, a closer relative of the homo sapien. Its far more accurate to identify the reactions of our closer primate cousins than the species Rattus norvegicus, two different species with rather varying anatomical features.

Most tests done on prescription drugs are used first on rats, however, the final final test is given to a chimpanzee. If they react seriously or morbidly to the said drug, it won't be tested on humans. If however it is a positive result, it might proceed towards human testing.

Yes, Bran. There are perhaps more than a million Burmese illegal immigrants in Thailand and they do all kinds of lowly jobs in Thailand. Myanmar's currency is less than worthless - nobody accepts it anywhere in the world.

Thailand shares hundreds of kilometers of national boundaries with Burma. Through these boundaries, which are not as protected as the U.S. had done to its boundaries with Mexico, Burmese tried their luck and landed in the streets of Thailand.

I have several Burmese friends - they are quiet, calm and moderate souls.

Filipinos are fighters at any time of history. In fact we fight a lot and to the extreme. Our house helpers in the Middle East would even kill Arab employers when pushed to the wall.

You're right, Mike. Very right. The Filipino will rise up against something he or she knows is wrong. As a people, we are very forgiving and sometimes give in to corruption and ill vices, as do any other people. However, when it comes to shove, when we are determined at something, it is accomplished.

Marcos and Erap learned the hard way.

Even the Americans and the Japanese. The blunt sharp steel of the Filipino's sundang, bolo and Kriss is forever engraved in their minds.

That is very alarming, as if the rise of China in the region is unchecked. Thanks for the information on the situation between the two giants, Mike.

In my own view though, it would have been great if China persuaded the Burmese government to ease its policies. The rise of China is inivetible, hopefully She can contribute to the stability of the region....
I remain hopeful in this situation....

Reading things like this, I'm really glad that the Philippines has such a liberal media. Our views and our people's right to know isn't limited by the government as it is in the rest of south east asian countries.
My God, if government ever did something like this, the will of the Filipino people would rise up again. And a massive people power will oust any government foolish enough to attack the very people it is said to represent.

Myanmar needs to reform, definitely. It can't survive living as a closed-isolationist country forever.
First of all, its membership to ASEAN should be definitely revoked until it adopts a democratic form of government, where its citizens are rightfully represented. Second of all, its human rights violations are abhorric. Its practically a terrorist state.

I think Mike said earlier that thousands of Burmese refugees flock to thailand for safety every year, am I right, Mike?
Unbelievable. Totally unbelievable.

Its amazing how nations use double speak. Its like playing two roles at the same time. You're right, Mike, China does benefit from Myanmar and vice versa. One thing that China is looking is building a naval port in Myanmar, and the heavy natural gas reserves in Myanmar is a source of energy that China desperately needs as well.

Im amazed that India isn't intervening, considering Myanmar is in India's sphere of influence. Is it because India doesn't want to risk confronting a Chinese response?

LONDON (AFP) - British Airways ordered 12 Airbus superjumbo A380s and 24 of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliners on Tuesday in a giant deal to modernise its fleet worth 8.2 billion dollars (5.7 billion euros) at catalogue prices.

The order for the A380 is the first time the British airline has opted for longhaul Airbus planes and is a vital vote of confidence in the superjumbo, which has been hit by production problems and delivery delays.

"The Airbus A380 will provide a great solution for our high density markets and get the most out of scarce London Heathrow (landing) slots," said British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh, who said the plane was ideal for routes to Asia, west coast United States and South Africa.

BA has options for a further seven Airbus A380s and another 18 Boeing Dreamliners. All the planes are to be be equipped with Rolls-Royce engines and will be delivered between 2010 and 2014.

The Boeing Dreamliner, a midsized longhaul jet, is the US company's first new commercial airliner in 13 years and has so far eclipsed Airbus's equivalent model, the A350.

Airbus and Boeing are fierce rivals in the market for large commercial aircraft, but are currently profiting from an upturn in air travel and decisions by major airlines to renew their fleets.

Both the A380 and Dreamliner have been marketed as "environmentally friendly" planes by the manufacturers, who have stressed the lower fuel consumption and reduced sound pollution benefits.

In a reflection of how airlines are under pressure over their environmental record, Walsh stressed how "green" criteria had determined the choice of aircraft.

"These aircraft set the gold standard when it comes to environmental performance in the key areas of CO2 emissions, local air quality and noise. They will contribute significantly to our target of improving fuel efficiency by 25 percent between 2005 and 2025," Walsh said.

"They are also much quieter than their predecessors, which is of vital importance at Heathrow (airport). Both the A380 and B787 are rated as producing a quarter of the noise level of the B747-400," he said.

The British airline operates out of London's Heathrow airport, the world's busiest, which suffers from a shortage of landing slots and has become a focus for protests against air travel.

Nearly 2,000 British police were deployed to monitor a large demonstration by climate change campaigners against the airport in August.

Airbus hailed the order for the A380 as "another breakthrough" for its star plane, which is the world's biggest airliner. The first delivery is planned for next month to launch client Singapore Airlines.

Deliveries are 18 months behind schedule however because of production difficulties, which has irked clients and led to financial losses for Airbus.

British Airways said it would continue to consider the most suitable aircraft to replace its remaining Boeing B747-400 aircraft and was examining the Boeing B787-10 and B777-300 ER and the Airbus A350XWB.

Walsh said a decision on this order would be made "by the end of next year, early 2009."

The airline said it has arranged for a group of banks to provide 1.5 billion dollars of debt financing to cover all of the airline's firm orders to the end of 2011.

World Daily News / China issues plea for calm in Myanmar
September 28, 2007, 12:21:26 AM
By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer 54 minutes ago

BEIJING - After refusing to condemn Myanmar at the United Nations, China on Thursday issued an evenhanded plea for calm in the country, calling on all sides to show restraint.

The United States, Australia and other countries reiterated their calls for the junta to open a dialogue with peaceful protesters after soldiers opened fired into a crowd to try to disperse tens of thousands of people who defied the government's ban on demonstrations.

Japan, meanwhile, said it would protest the death of one of its citizens in the violent crackdown.

China has come under increasing pressure to use its regional influence to urge Myanmar's ruling junta to show restraint in dealing with the protests.

On Wednesday, China refused to condemn Myanmar and ruled out imposing sanctions against the country, but for the first time agreed to a Security Council statement expressing concern at the violent crackdown and urging the country's military rulers to allow in a U.N. envoy.

China and Russia contend that the situation in Myanmar is an internal affair and doesn't threaten international peace and security â€" as required for Security Council action â€" so getting them to agree to the press statement was considered a positive step.

China's U.N. Ambassador Wang Guangya said after the meeting that the most important thing is to see that the Myanmar authorities "restore stability." But he said he believed sanctions would not be helpful, adding "these problems now at this stage (do) not constitute a threat to international and regional peace and stability."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a media briefing in Beijing on Thursday that "China hopes that all parties in Myanmar exercise restraint and properly handle the current issue so as to ensure the situation there does not escalate and get complicated."

The crackdown puts China in a bind. Its communist government has developed close diplomatic ties with junta leaders and is a major investor in Myanmar. But with the Beijing Olympics less than a year away, China is eager to fend off criticism that it shelters unpopular or abusive regimes.

In Japan, Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said Tokyo will lodge a protest against Myanmar's military junta over the death of Kenji Nagai, 50, a journalist who was covering the protests in Yangon for Japanese video news agency APF News.

He was confirmed dead after his father and a company representative identified him in a photo, a Japanese Embassy official in Myanmar told The Associated Press.

"We strongly protest the Myanmar government and demand an investigation (into the death). We demand (Myanmar) take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of the Japanese citizens in that country," Machimura was quoted by the Kyodo News Agency as saying.

In Beijing, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill told reporters that the use of force by the junta "will solve nothing."

"It seems that people are sending a very clear message to the regime there that they need to begin a process of genuine dialogue and above all refrain from any use of force," Hill said.

"We all need to agree on the fact that the Burmese government has got to stop thinking that this can be solved by police and military, and start thinking about the need for genuine reconciliation with the broad spectrum of political activists in the country," he added.

Hill was expected to discuss the violence in Myanmar with Chinese officials on the sidelines of North Korean nuclear disarmament talks this week in Beijing. He declined to say whether Washington would request specific measures from Beijing.

"I think it's something that all countries need to be concerned about especially to use the influence that countries have to prevent the Burmese authorities from cracking down on these peaceful protests," Hill said.

First lady Laura Bush pleaded Wednesday with Myanmar's ruling military regime to resist using force, but her personal appeal came the same day that security officers opened fire on demonstrators.

"I want to say to the armed guards and to the soldiers: Don't fire on your people. Don't fire on your neighbors," she said in a Voice of America interview held in New York, where President Bush had been attending meetings at the United Nations.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard said his government would also press Beijing to urge the junta to end its violent repression.

"We will be encouraging ... China to exert a positive influence on the regime to encourage it to hold back on the repression and to adopt a more accommodating attitude toward the people," Howard told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

The European Union has already joined the United States in condemning the attacks and urging the country's military rulers to stop the violence and open a dialogue with pro-democracy leaders.

On Thursday, EU diplomats agreed to consider adding to sanctions already in place against the country in response to its lack of political reforms and poor human rights record.

"The crucial point is how to take measures that can have an impact on those who are responsible for events in the country without harming the population," EU spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said in Brussels, Belgium.

YANGON, Myanmar - Security forces fired automatic weapons into thousands of pro-democracy protesters for a second day Thursday, and the military government said nine people were killed and 11 wounded.

Tens of thousands defied the ruling military junta's crackdown with a 10th straight day of demonstrations in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon. Security forces also raided several monasteries overnight, beating monks and arresting more than 100, according to a monk at one monastery.

The protests are the stiffest challenge to the generals in two decades, a crisis that began Aug. 19 with protests over a fuel price hike, then expanded dramatically when monks started leading the marches. The crackdown has drawn increasing international pressure on the isolated regime.

Thousands of protesters ran through the streets of Yangon on Thursday after warning shots were fired into the crowds. Bloody sandals were left lying in the road.

"Give us freedom, give us freedom!" some shouted at the soldiers.

Ye Htut, a government spokesman, said riot police clashed with anti-government protesters in Yangon on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring 11. Thirty-one government troops were also injured, he said.

The government said one person was killed Wednesday, although media and dissident reports said up to eight died in the first day of the crackdown.

Among those killed Thursday was Kenji Nagai, a journalist for Japanese video news agency APF News. Nagai, 50, had been covering the protests in Yangon since Tuesday, APF representative Toru Yamaji said in Japan.

In Washington, Japan's new foreign minister, Masahiko Komura, said his country holds Myanmar "strictly" accountable for Nagai's death. He told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a private meeting that the international community cannot allow peaceful protesters to be killed and injured.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said Tokyo will lodge a protest with Myanmar's military junta. "We strongly protest the Myanmar government and demand an investigation (into the death). We demand (Myanmar) take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of the Japanese citizens in that country," Machimura was quoted by the Kyodo News Agency as saying.

Witnesses said an estimated 70,000 people gathered in the streets, but there were only a handful of monks in the crowd, compared with previous days when thousands marched.

Witnesses and a Western diplomat told the AP that dozens of men were arrested and severely beaten after soldiers fired into one crowd of protesters. Troops in at least four locations fired into crowds after several thousand protesters ignored an order from security forces to disband, witnesses and diplomats said.

Some reports said the dead included Buddhist monks, who are widely revered in Myanmar, and the emergence of such martyrs could stoke public anger against the regime and escalate the violence.

Before dawn Thursday, security forces raided several monasteries considered hotbeds of the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

A monk at Ngwe Kyar Yan monastery pointed to bloodstains on the concrete floor and said a number of monks were beaten and at least 100 were taken away in vehicles. Shots were fired in the air and tear gas was used to disperse a crowd of 1,500 supporters during the chaotic raid, he said.

"Soldiers slammed the monastery gate with the car, breaking the lock and forcing it into the monastery," said the monk, who did not give his name for fear of reprisal. "They smashed the doors down, broke windows and furniture. When monks resisted, they shot at the monks and used tear gas and beat up the monks and dragged them into trucks."

Empty bullet shells, broken doors, furniture and glass were strewn on the ground.

A female lay disciple said a number of monks also were arrested at the Moe Gaung monastery, which was being guarded by soldiers. Both monasteries are located in Yangon's northern suburbs.

In Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, about 430 miles north of Yangon, five army trucks with soldiers and three fire trucks were seen driving into the Mahamuni Pagoda, where hundreds of monks were locked inside by security forces.

Another 60 soldiers blocked the road to the pagoda from the center of the city.

Also Thursday, security forces arrested Myint Thein, spokesman for opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's political party, family members said.

An Asian diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity citing protocol told AP that Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, remained at her Yangon residence, where she has been held under house arrest for much of the past 18 years.

The diplomat said the junta had deployed more security forces around her house and on the road leading to it, with more than 100 soldiers inside the compound.

Myanmar's state-run newspaper blamed "saboteurs inside and outside the nation" for causing the protests in Yangon, and said the demonstrations were much smaller than the media were reporting.

The crackdown has prompted condemnations from officials in the U.S. and Europe and statements of concern from regional powerhouse China, Myanmar's chief diplomatic ally.

China has come under increasing pressure to use its regional influence to urge Myanmar's ruling junta to show restraint in dealing with the protests.

On Wednesday, China refused to condemn Myanmar and ruled out imposing sanctions against the country, but for the first time agreed to a Security Council statement expressing concern at the violent crackdown and urging the country's military rulers to allow in a U.N. envoy.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in Beijing on Thursday that "China hopes that all parties in Myanmar exercise restraint and properly handle the current issue so as to ensure the situation there does not escalate and get complicated."

The United States called on Myanmar's military leaders to open a dialogue with the protesters and urged China to do what it can to prevent further bloodshed.

"We all need to agree on the fact that the Burmese government has got to stop thinking that this can be solved by police and military, and start thinking about the need for genuine reconciliation with the broad spectrum of political activists in the country," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill in Beijing.

Hill was expected to discuss the violence in Myanmar with Chinese officials on the sidelines of North Korean nuclear disarmament talks this week in Beijing.

European Union diplomats agreed to consider imposing more economic sanctions on Myanmar. Sanctions were first imposed in 1996 and include a ban on travel to Europe for top government officials, an assets freeze and a ban on arms sales to Myanmar.

Gusto pood ko mo meet niya this summer. I hear iyang mama was the incumbent mayor before? Pero i was really touched by his story---he had a great job offer here in the states, great education. Yet, he went back home to Bohol, to his hometown.

It takes a man with great inner strength and political will to do that. He is a natural born leader. God has graced him with many gifts. May he be a shining light for the youth of Bohol.
