Chapter 1

On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past.  For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."

The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking.  How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"

So God saw it was good.

Norway police slammed for slow response to rampage
By SHAWN POGATCHNIK - Associated Press â€" 4 hrs ago

OSLO, Norway (AP) â€" When Anders Behring Breivik launched his assault on the youth campers of Utoya Island, he expected Norway's special forces to swoop down and stop him at any minute.

Instead, Delta Force police officers made the 25-mile journey by car â€" they have no helicopter â€" then had to be rescued by a civilian craft when their boat broke down as it tried to navigate a one-minute hop to the island.

It took police more than 90 minutes to reach the gunman, who by then had mortally wounded 68 people. Breivik immediately dropped his guns and surrendered, having exceeded his wildest murderous expectations.

As Oslo's police force sounds an increasingly defensive note, international experts said Tuesday that Norway's government and security forces must learn stark lessons from a massacre made worse by a lackadaisical approach to planning for terror.

"Children were being slaughtered for an hour and a half and the police should have stopped it much sooner," said Mads Andenas, a law professor at the University of Oslo whose niece was on the island and survived by hiding in the bushes. One of his students was killed.

"Even taking all the extenuating circumstances into account, it is unforgivable," he said.

Survivors said they struggled to get their panicked pleas heard because operators on emergency lines were rejecting calls not connected to the Oslo bomb. When police finally realized a gunman was shooting teens and 20-somethings attending a youth retreat on the island, Breivik had already been hunting them down for half an hour.

In a final act of bungling, police on Monday revised the island death toll down to 68, after initially miscounting the corpses at 86. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

A crush fetish is a paraphilia in which one is sexually aroused when usually someone of the attractive sex crushes objects, food and sometimes small animals or insects with/under their foot. The term soft crush, the more common fetish: refers to videos involving small animals being crushed, usually invertebrates (e.g. insects, worms, spiders) while the term hard crush which has drawn more attention: refers to such videos involving larger animals, and arguably more pain-susceptible animals (e.g. reptiles, birds, mammals). The preference could be barefoot, high-heels, flip flops, converse and so on, depending on the fetishist. --Wiki

Oi, naa man diay tuod ni...

A crush fetish is a desire to see small insects or animals crushed to death. Inanimate objects, such as cigarettes, fruit or toy cars, can also be crush fetish stimuli. The legality of crush erotica and the actual practice of crushing varies by region. There are currently no known laws forbidding the crushing of objects and insects, however the production or trade of crush erotica involving live vertebrates is condemned by animal rights activists and is illegal in many countries including the United States and Great Britain. -- http://listverse.com/2007/09/24/top-10-bizarre-fetishes/

Perhaps calling the President’s speech an idiot’s tale is too harsh. But you really can’t make a Porsche (with or without a wang-wang) out of rusted, broken-down jeepney parts, so the image will have to do.

I did listen to the speech. But I was “live-blogging” while doing soâ€"and gathering a lot of honest, real-time comments while at it.

Some of the comments blurted out by the posters in an anti-Aquino Facebook group were certainly a lot better than the ones gathered by the broadcast media from the lawmakers and other muckety-mucks who attended the President’s Sona at the Batasan complex. Here’s a sampling of the remarks:

“This Sona is just for a ratings upgrade â€"Aquino’s own. And I’m scared he accomplished just that. The ‘man-on-the-street’ will like this speech.”

“What happens if [new Ombudsman] Justice Morales decides to pursue cases against Aquino’s wishes? Another impeachment? Or is her mandate only to go after officials of the Arroyo administration?”

“Gloria Arroyo was never mentioned in the Sona! Now that’s a true accomplishment!”

“I thought he’s not a micro-manager? Why is he talking about a mosquito trap?”

“Yes, it might be cheaper to build a light rail system using local engineering and materials. But if they raise the fares to unaffordable levels, what’s the point of that?”

“He’s coughing into his hands as he’s walking out. I hope nobody shakes his hands.”

“I got a ‘job mismatch’ for this guy: him and the presidency!”

“He wants to defend Filipinos in their own land. How about the foreigners in our own land? Maybe that’s why that hostage crisis took place.”

“Why is there a delay in the clapping? Does he need to stop before they can clap? Is the audience just being courteous?

“Why is there no mention of tourism plans or achievements? Is it because the tourism secretary is really about to be fired?”

“It’s not true that Noynoy has no allies among the bishops. See the one leading the prayerâ€"the one hit with water cannons in GMA’s time?”

If this Sona goes down as the “Wang-Wang Speech,” no one will be surprised. According to media, Aquino mentioned the once-common wailing sirens that became iconic for their supposed reduction under Aquino’s short stint a full 20 times in his speech.

The regulation of sirens was used by Aquino as a metaphor for how government today is more responsive, thrifty, caring and generally a lot less corrupt than the one that went before. In other words, Aquino attempted to turn a symbol of his perceived lack of real accomplishments that benefit majority of the people into a weapon to beat the heads of the people who oppose him with.

But the new spin on wang-wang by Aquino quickly became tired. He still had to justify what he’s been doing, after allâ€"like his controversial decisions to revoke a valid contract to dredge the Laguna lake, his postponement of the elections in Muslim Mindanao and the like.

Then Aquino started calling for an end to the “negativism” that pervades Philippine culture, the crab mentality that drags down others, incessantly criticizes and postulates that nothing good will come out of anything.

But that note couldn’t be sustained, either. Aquino, after all, was at the forefront of all the negative campaigning that was used to great effect in the last electionsâ€"a conscious policy of negativism that was also employed to tar and feather his rivals in the elections for their association with the Arroyo administration and which is still used today to discredit everything that his predecessor has done.

I’ve often asked the question of why it was all right to criticize the Arroyo government when it was in power and when the then-opposition was doing itâ€"but not when the former critics are now in power and the hated regime is no more. I believe I shall not have the answer to that anytime soon.

Surely, the Arroyo administration did some really execrable things during its long tenureâ€"and it was justly pilloried for them during its reign. But why are the missteps committed by its successor in office immune from the same criticism?

Finally, it is disappointing to hear calls for unity from a President who still persists in wearing the symbol of his partisanship very prominently on his clothing. Yes, the yellow ribbon that Aquino refuses to admit is a divisive icon to the majority of Filipino voters who did not choose him in May 2010 is still very much a part of the President’s wardrobeâ€"giving mute testimony against his calls for unity and pulling together.

Perhaps calling the President’s speech an idiot’s tale is too harsh. But you really can’t make a Porsche (with or without a wang-wang) out of rusted, broken-down jeepney parts, so the image will have to do.

An idiot’s tale
by Jojo A. Robles

President Noynoy Aquino’s second Sona, in the words of Shakespeare in Macbeth, sounded like a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. But that is something that the majority of Filipinos that Aquino claims still approve of him still will never admit.

So that was the speech that we’ve all been waiting for. Fifty minutes of talk made longer by many interruptions precipitated by applauding lawmakers and at least two coughing fits.

To say that Aquino’s much-awaited second State-of-the-Nation Address was underwhelming is an understatement. No clear policy roadmap was expounded, no centerpiece program to tie up that policy across government instrumentalities was unveiled.

Indeed, while the speech was long on specifics (specifics that should have been included in the promised paper to be distributed after the monologue), it had no unifying theme. Except for the wang-wang imageryâ€"flogged mercilessly in order to turn a brickbat into a praiseworthy achievementâ€"there was no central point to the entire speech.

If the speech had truly wanted to outline Aquino’s plans for the five years that remain in his term, he would certainly have omitted mentions of the back roads he had built, like he was some electioneering barangay chairman.

He would have told us what happened to last year’s centerpiece program, for instance, the much-ballyhooed Private-Public Partnerships. (Perhaps the fact that not one PPP project has been signed in the past year may have had something to do with this grave omission.)

Sure, there were the expected comparisons between the gains in the first year in office of Aquino and the diametrically opposed achievements of the entire Arroyo regime. But all that comparing, while arguably an important part of the speech, was not done in the context of moving forward.

There were a lot of backward glances. But there were no forward-looking program, except more of the same conditional cash transfers and such like.

It was as if this Sona, commented one poster on a live blog I joined during the speech, was really intended for a ratings upgradeâ€"Aquino’s own, in the popularity surveys. All motherhood statements and continuing down the road of vengefulness, without any clear plans for the future.

You certainly are entitled to ask: Will this be the default setting of next year’s Sona? And the one after that, and so on?

Will Aquino continue to bitch about how bad things were before and how much better things are now, without presenting a real roadmap for the future for his administration? Who knows?

The red-fruited strawberry guava

Cattley guava, as named in honour of notable English horticulturist Sir William Cattley, or Peruvian guava (P. cattleianum is the correct and most common used name; P. littorale is a synonym) is a small tree (2â€"6 m tall), bearing small red or yellow fruit, which are somewhat sour but sometimes eaten or made into jam. The red-fruited strawberry guava is Psidium littorale var. cattleianum. The yellow-fruited Psidium littorale var. littorale is known as lemon guava, and in Hawaii as waiawÄ«. Native to Brazil and adjacent tropical South America, it is closely related to common guava (P. guajava), and like that species is a widespread, highly invasive species in tropical areas, especially HawaiÊ»i. It tends to form dense, monotypic stands which prevent regrowth of native species, and is very difficult to eradicate. As an invasive species, it is sometimes erroneously called "Chinese guava". --Wiki

The fruit can be eaten by cutting them in half and scooping out the pulp and seeds or by biting off a piece of the rind and sucking out the insides. Strawberry guavas taste like passionfruit mixed with strawberry; lemon guavas have a more acidic and spicier flavor. The seeds are small and white in colour and can be roasted as a substitute for coffee. Its leaves may be brewed for tea. The skin is also edible and tastes a bit like rose petals but is best removed for a sweeter flavour.

OSLO (Reuters) - The confessed killer of more than 90 people in Norway wanted to prepare by hiring two top-class prostitutes and drinking some expensive French wine, the document he distributed on the Internet showed Monday.

In a 1,500-page manifesto and instruction manual for would-be "crusaders" against Islam and liberal European politicians, the document written by Anders Behring Breivik says preparations should include a photo session after a "few hours in a solarium to look fresher."

Breivik, who police say has confessed to the killing, was appearing in court Monday on a police request to hold him for a further eight weeks after his Friday detention.

The manifesto sets out Breivik's ideas and also documents a period from April 2002 to the day before the July 22 attacks, showing a mixture of obsessive planning and glimpses of his everyday life.

"This house is infested with beetles. Just now I was about to reach for a chocolate in my goodie bag and a beetle had crawled in," he wrote of the farm where he made his preparations.

The document discusses friends and family and says at the end of April he spent time "partying" before getting down to work on the farm he rented to make a bomb.

He wrote that he was surprised by visitors a number of times and sometimes suspected it was the police.

He said he had been storing three bottles of expensive French red wine. "Considering the fact that my martyrdom operation draws ever closer I decided to bring one to enjoy with my extended family at our annual Christmas party in December."

"My thought was to save the last flask for my last martyrdom celebration and enjoy it with the two high-class model whores I intend to rent prior to the mission," he wrote.

It was not clear from the document whether he did do that.

But he said in an entry dated July 11 that he had "bought a lot of exquisite food and candy" to recharge his batteries.

The document also shows an extensive use of steroids and protein drinks to provide him with more energy and one point he writes that he wishes he could obtain "aggressiveness pills."

Breivik wrote of himself as a righteous crusader on a mission to save European "Christendom" from a tide of Islam. (Editing by Alistair Lyon) -- http://news.yahoo.com/

After the usual greetings, Noynoy proceeds thus:

I stood before you during my inauguration and promised: we would do away with the use of the wang-wang. This one gesture has become the symbol of change, not just in our streets, but even in our collective attitude.

Over the years, the wang-wang had come to symbolize abuse of authority. It was routinely used by public officials to violate traffic laws, inconveniencing ordinary motoristsâ€"as if only the time of the powerful few, and no one else’s, mattered. Instead of behaving like public servants, they acted like kings. This privilege was extended to their cronies and patrons, who moved along the streets as if they were aristocracy, indifferent to those who were forced to give way and were left behind. Abusing privilege despite promising to serveâ€"this is the wang-wang mindset; this is the mindset of entitlement.

They had no right to do this. The law authorizes only the President, the Vice President, the Senate President, the Speaker, the Chief Justice, and police vehicles, fire trucks, and ambulances to use sirens in the fulfillment of their official dutiesâ€"no one else. Yet the flagrant abuse we bore witness to prompts us to ask: if they felt it their privilege to flout the simplest traffic laws, how could we expect them not to help themselves to a share of projects funded by the Filipino people?

Do you want the corrupt held accountable? So do I. Do you want to see the end of wang-wang, both on the streets and in the sense of entitlement that has led to the abuse that we have lived with for so long? So do I. Do you want to give everyone a fair chance to improve their lot in life? So do I.

Deaths Could Challenge Norway's Views On Justice
by Scott Neuman
July 25, 2011

If the shooting and bombing rampage that killed dozens of people in Norway last week had happened in the United States, the man who confessed to the assault could be facing the death penalty. Instead, the maximum sentence Anders Behring Breivik faces â€" at least initially â€" is 21 years.

The alleged crimes of Breivik, 32, have stunned people who view Norway much as the Scandinavian country views itself â€" as a bastion of nonviolence and social liberalism. Many are equally shocked that Breivik could get such a light sentence for the crime â€" although it could be extended by five-year chunks if a court ruled Breivik remained a continuing threat.

But Norway's open views on crime and punishment date back more than a century, with the abolition in 1902 of executions in time of peace. Following World War II, Norway was a founding member and leading voice in the Council of Europe and the European Convention on Human Rights, which, among other precepts, requires signatories to foreswear the use of the death penalty in peacetime.

The viewpoint arose out of the countless atrocities of World War II, said Nida Gelazis, a senior associate at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington.

A selection of the maximum criminal penalties in European countries:

Capital Punishment:
Belarus

Life Imprisonment:
Germany
France
Sweden
Russia (not for women)
Ukraine
Romania
Italy
Turkey
England
Wales
Ireland
Montenegro
Finland
Switzerland

Other Maximum Sentences:
Norway, 21 years
Spain, 30 years (40 for terrorism)
Portugal, 25 years
Serbia, 40 years
Bosnia-Herzegovina, 45 years
Croatia, 40 years

"The idea was that somehow Europeans could get along better if they could focus on institutions that create norms that bind them," she said.

In Europe, where most countries have a much lower homicide rate than the U.S., "there's sort of a general consensus that the death penalty is barbaric and that it is something that a modern democracy shouldn't participate in," she said.

"People are unwilling to support a state that has the power to take your life, regardless of the crime statistics," she said.

Norway's murder rate is extremely low even by European standards. The country averaged 0.69 murders per 100,000 people per year between 2006 and 2008, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In comparison, France averaged 1.37 homicides per 100,000 perople, and Lithuania averaged 8.76 homicides per 100,000 people. The U.S. had a murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rate of 5.4 per 100,000 people in 2008, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics.

Norway, like a few other European nations, has eliminated life imprisonment. Spain, Portugal and much of the former Yugoslavia have also done away with life sentences, but Norway's maximum of just 21 years incarceration is an outlier even among the more liberal European states.

"I think it's just a reflection of the Norwegian ethos and the Norwegian self image," said Mike Newton, a professor at Vanderbilt University Law School. Norway, he said, "doesn't culturally tend to focus on crime and criminality and certainly not criminality of this magnitude."

Newton said the events of last week are likely to shake things up.

"What this may do is overcome some of the cultural resistance that might have been in place of people who said simply, 'We don't need to worry about that,'" he said. "Well, clearly it's been demonstrated that the Norwegians do need to worry about it."

Newton said it is possible that if convicted, Breivik could "in theory" be held longer than 21 years. Or, the especially horrible circumstances of this case could simply prompt a change in the law before Breivik goes to trial.

"That would not be inappropriate and it would certainly not be a deprivation of fundamental human rights," Newton said. "Even if it's directed against a particular offense or a particular set of circumstances, that's totally permissible." -- http://www.npr.org/

Aquino highlights wins vs hunger, poverty
Monday, July 25, 2011

MANILA (Updated 4:08 p.m.) -- The hunger rate in the country is down by five percent, or from 20.5 percent in March to 15.1 percent this June, President Benigno Aquino III said in his address to the nation Monday.

Before a joint session of Congress, Aquino also said his anti "wang-wang" (car siren) policy has translated into a fight for what is right and into an intolerance for government abuses.

The reduction in the hunger rating was equivalent to a million Filipino families who used to go hungry, but who now say they eat properly every day.

Aquino said, through the initiative and leadership of Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, assistance has been given to an average of more than 100,000 families per month.

"I am optimistic that we will reach our target of 1.3 million additional beneficiaries this year. With a compliance rate of 92 percent, millions of mothers are already getting regular check-ups at public health centers, millions of babies are being vaccinated against common diseases, and millions of school-aged children are now attending classes," he said.

Aquino started his administration last year with a policy to stop abuses by public officials, like government cars using sirens to let them go through traffic, to the inconvenience of ordinary Filipinos.

He said the campaign against "utak 'wang-wang'" or an abusive mindset is starting to bear fruit.

Aquino also called for a sense of gratitude for the efforts of individuals to creating a better nation. He said the anti-wang wang campaign included doing one's part and not only complaining about government failures.

57 year-old Manjit Singh, called the "Ironman", holds more than 30 world records including pulling a double decker bus with his hair, lifting 85 kg with his ears, and of course, pulling a Jet also with his ears! On April 2007, Ironman pulled the aircraft -weighting approximately 7.4 tonnes- 12ft along the apron at East Midlands Airport, UK.

Speaking after the record attempt, he said: "I don't feel too bad, I have a little bit of pain around the ears but I'm ok." The attempt raised money for his charity Manjit Fitness, which aims to get children living in his native Mahilpur, India involved in sport. -- http://www.oddee.com/
