People in happy relationships have a smaller risk of developing heart disease, a study has revealed.

Those in more stressful relationships where conflicts and rows are common were found to not only suffer from heart ache but also an increased risk of heart disease.

Researchers from University College London surveyed over 9,000 British civil servants on the negative aspects of their close relationships between 1989 and 1990 or between 1985 and 1988.

Participants commented on how much emotional and practical support they received on a regular basis from the person they were closest to.

They were then followed-up after 12 years to see who had developed fatal or non-fatal coronary events, including heart attacks.

Out of the 8,499 people who did not have coronary heart disease at the beginning of the study and who provided sufficient information for the analysis, 589 reported a coronary heart disease event.

Writing in the Archives of Internal Medicine journal, the researchers claim that after adjusting for other factors that influence heart disease risk, people in relationships with high negativity were 1.34 times more likely to suffer from an event associated with heart disease than those in happier relationships.

"When one considers emotional factors and their biological translation into the body, research shows that negative marital interactions are associated with depression, often in combination with reduced self-esteem and/or higher levels of anger," the researchers write.

"These emotional reactions have been found to influence coronary heart disease through the cumulative 'wear and tear' on organs and tissues caused by the alterations of autonomic [involuntary] functions, neuroendocrine [nerve cell] changes, disturbances in coagulation [blood clotting] and inflammatory and immune responses."

The stress and anxiety brought on by a rocky marriage or relationship can take its toll on your heart, a study says.

Previous research has suggested that those in a relationship enjoy better health than singleton contemporaries.

But this latest study of 9,000 British civil servants suggests that picking an unsuitable partner may be worse for your heart than not picking one at all.

Negative relationships boost the risk of heart problems by 34%, the Archives of Internal Medicine study suggested.

The civil servants completed questionnaires about their close relationships in the 1980s.

They were then followed by researchers at University College London for 12 years. Of the 8,499 individuals who did not have heart problems to begin with, some 589 reported a heart condition subsequently.

Those who reported close relationships which featured arguments, criticism and other types of conflict were more likely to be in the group which registered the problems.

The association was weakened somewhat after the researchers adjusted for negative personality traits and depression, but still remained "significant", the authors said.

The authors explained their findings in reference to the "wear and tear" on organs that emotional fluctuations could cause, through for example hormonal changes and disturbances in blood clotting.

Cathy Ross, a cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation said the study "reinforces a well-known fact that lack of emotional and psychological support may increase the risk of heart disease".

"Identifying groups of individuals who are at risk and ensuring psychological support can make a big difference. It allows people to deal with their negative emotions."

Every spring break, millions of yankee college kids go down south to cancun, florida, puerto rico, Hawaii etc to just enjoy the warm sun and the nice beaches. This will be my first and last spring break, lol.

Animals, too, experience a profound feeling of sadness when their play/hunt/sex partner dies. Those studying the behavior of wild and domestic animals come with an increasing number of cases proving that animals are capable of pure sorrow when they lose someone close to them. Somehow, this behavior is linked to self-conscience, thus only "brainy" animals, like mammals and some birds, consciously commit suicide.

It is hard to say if animals commit suicide. An animal will not do this because of a sudden dread, or an excessive emotion. As they cannot ... speak, it's difficult to assess if there is a true suicide.

But when a dog or a cat, following the death of their master, refuse food dying of hunger, we can conclude that this is an unwitting consequence of the pain they feel. But when the animal throws itself from a height, it's hard to believe this is a casual act or the effect of its anxiety.

This case was seen in a natural reserve in Zimbabwe: chased from their pride, the luck seemed to have encountered a pair of old hungry male lions. They cornered a warthog, but the animal escaped in the last moment in a den. One of the lions, pushed by the hunger, tried to follow it, but he got trapped in the narrow hole. His partner tried to help him, pulling him out with the paw, but when the trapped lion started roaring of pain, he stopped.

The trapped lion died asphyxiated, and the next day, his partner hardly managed to pull out his corpse. Sooner, the second lion was found dead next to the body of the other. He had refused to go hunting, and died
of hunger.

Dogs are known for their strong affection feelings, and stories with suicidal dogs abound. Dogs grown together get so bound one to each other, that often do not survive to the loss of one of them. One owner had an airdale and a fox-terrier, who were always hanging together.

One day, the fox-terrier was crashed by a car and died. The owner buried it in the garden. The playful airdale changed its behavior, did not leave the tomb, refused food, and was haunting like a phantom during the night like looking for its friend. Few days later, the airdale was found dead next to the tomb of its friend.

But this attachment of the dogs is also applied to their human masters. This story occurred in Rome: the owner of Shastra, a Spanish cockerel, died. When the corpse was pulled out of the house, the dog tossed itself from the third level. It just broke one leg. It was brought to the veterinarian but once again home, the pulled out itself from the leash and threw itself again.

This time it died. Perhaps, the places in which the dog played so many times with its master could have recalled the dog such painful records that it could not resist and suicided.

This case occurred in Ostiglia (also Italy): Franz, a German shepherd dog, was laying on the railways line, near the railway station. Workers always chased away with stones the dog, but soon after the dog returned, and one day, the dog met with the Verona-Bologna train...

Franz had lost his master, condemned two weeks before to one year in jail. Since she had disappeared, the animal refused food, haunting through the city, like a suffering soul missing a beloved one.

This case occurred in the Farnese palace (Paris): a white Angora tomcat chased restlessly a pussy cat next door. But the female was indifferent to his advances, and one day the tomcat threw himself through the windows and died. The owner said because of the unshared love...

An 8-year-old girl had a cat which she surrounded with all her care and affection. The two were very bound. But the child died of a sudden condition, and everybody forgot in a such a difficult moment about the cat. When they remembered about the animal, it was gone.

Three months later, a scratch was heard at the door. It was the cat, weakened and with sad eyes. The cat refused food or caresses; it went to the girl's room, looked around, went to the open window and tossed itself: it died with the skull crashed on the pavement.

Monkeys too react in the same manner when losing a partner. Many times in Zoos, when one monkey in a pair dies, the partner refuses food, dying a few days later. Monkeys are highly intelligent, and form strong bounds with the partner.

Of course, the suicide also occurs amongst dolphins, animals considered the second after apes in what concerns intelligence level. In a Greek gulf, a pair of dolphins had been living for years. But one day the fishermen noticed that the male could not swim properly and floated with the belly up. Few days later, the male died. The female pushed the corpse, trying to keep it to the surface to "breathe".

When a storm begun, the body was taken and smashed to the rocks. Then, the female threw herself to the rocks, sharing the same faith with her partner.

As said, some birds, with a more complex behavior, can suicide, like parrots.

In a pair of pet love birds, the male got an injury that killed him in one hour. The female, witnessing the sufferance of her partner till he died, imitated all his movements, like she would have suffered the same way like him. She kept on imitating this even after her partner died, and this had a harming effect on her inner organs. Her vitality dropped, and she died soon.

But sometimes animals seem to suicide linked to depression, when serotonin ("happiness levels") drop to dangerous low levels, which is a much more common cause of suicide in humans, than longing.

A giraffe at Paris Zoo broke its head wittingly by the walls of its shelter, after a period of several days in which manifested signs of sadness and depression.

A 12-year-old lioness in an American Zoo had remained pregnant thrice, but each time she gave birth to weak cubs, which died soon. After the last pregnancy, she failed in the most severe depression. For several days she had refused food, and suddenly, she experienced a desperation crisis, starting to chew her tail as long as she reached. Than she started to chew one of her paws, and none could say the final results, if the keepers had not killed her. Post-partum depression is common also in women ...

In a English case, a farmer, renown for his brutality, bought a horse. The seller warned him not to use the whip for driving the horse. But two days later, the farmer bit violently the horse. Suddenly, the animal started running on a meadow surrounded from three parts by fences, and on a fourth side, there was a cliff dominating the sea shore. The horse galloped directly to the cliff, smashing itself on the rocks below.

In some animals, sex is pure suicidal, at least for the males. In praying mantis the female starts eating the male while still copulating, head first! And in some spiders, in which the male is a pygmy compared to female, sex is followed by its own sacrifice in the jaws of the female. In the end, males are just a piece of protein for the hungry eggs developing females. Is this a suicidal act of the male? Rather no, as he primarily has sex on his mind.

Another issue: Lemmings do not commit suicide! Each 4 years there is a cyclic demographical boom of the lemmings (small arctic rodents) followed by a desperate massive migration during which many die throwing themselves into the rivers, lakes and sea.

It has been regarded as a collective suicide, conscious or involuntary, caused by over-population. In reality, being solitary rodents by nature, when the population booms, the stronger lemmings drive the weaker and younger ones off long before the food is depleted.

The young lemmings disperse in random directions looking for vacant territory. Geographical features constrain their movements and channel them into a relatively narrow corridor and large numbers can build up leading to social friction, distress and eventually a mass panic can follow and they flee in all directions, but they do not deliberately march into the sea; this is just pure fantasy.

Self preservation is one of the most powerful biological forces in the universe, it even supersedes the urge to reproduce and protect ones young in some species. No. animals do not commit suicide.
An animal may grieve over the loss of a mate; this could possibly cause the animal undue stress which could possibly lead to death but not always. Most animals that are monogamous or form bonds with one mate for life (macaws and wolves) will usually pursue another mate after they lose one. Humans, the species homo sapien--a higher sentient cousin of the lower pimates, are no exception to this as well. Self preservation is biologically programmed within the hippocampus of the central nervous system; in all animalae taxa. Mammalian, avian, reptilian, amphibiae. Does not matter.

The only answer to this is "Docile government". During the 1960s, when the Philippines was a regional power, with advanced military weaponry (we were sporting advanced American hardware: F-5IIs, F-8s, C-4 strategic carpet bombers, then-advanced destroyers, cruisers and a fleet of support destroyers and patrol ships). During the British proclamation of creating a 'Malaya' state, the nation of Indonesia, which was then led by Sukarno, declared the illegality of the act. He mentioned historical precedent that northern Borneo was historically under the control of the Java-based Malays and hence the current state of Sarawak (eastern malaysia) should be reunited with Indonesia to form what was then termed by the Indonesian people as "Indoneesiya Jaya" (Greater Indonesia). The Indonesian high command also claimed that the state of Sabah, was part of the Sulu Empire for centuries (as earned in war when the Sulu Sultan aided the Sultan of Brunei in a war against the Dayas, and as payment for his brother's support, gave Sabah to the Sulu Sultan). Sukarno and his government decried that since Sabah was historically part of the SULU Empire, and since the Sulu Sultanate was under political and military control --and an integral part of the Philippines, it would make sense that all territories that were part of Sulu--should, by right of territorial sovereignty, be integrated with the Philippines as well.

What did we do after Malaya was created? Absolutely nothing.

Sukarno and the Indonesian government supported a proxy war with the state of Malaya and initiated the 'Konfrontasi', which was when indonesian paramilitary units attacked the state of Malaysia in an attempt to 'CRUSH' Malaysia and integrate it with Indonesia. This would have been the perfect time for the Philippines (then the strongest military power in south east asia---having air, land and naval superiority over malaysia, thailand and indonesia; and the fact that we were a strategic ally of the United States). An attack on the philippines would have been considered as an attck on the United States---and the Yankees would have supported us on our campaign.

Manila and our politicians should have supported Sukarno...and dividied Malaysia. I still cannot understand why our politicians did not do this! We were a regional power! Even indonesia would have been defeated by our armed forces at the time, and we were too 'scared' to instigate hostilities for fear of international protest. Now look at the state of the philippines. We have terrorist in the south that are entering the country via Sabah. If we reclaimed sabah decades ago like what we shoudve done, the entire region would have been assimilated and Mindanao and Sabah---completely Filipinized. There wouldnt be any reactionary forces--coming from sabah to manila and the philippines..as what we have at present.

In fact, the massive natural resources of sabah would have fueled our country to further growth.

Who knows, we could've even went to war with Indonesia and taken over the entire Borneon island. As indonesia, at the time, was an ant in comparison to the mighty Armed Forces of the Philippines (which had a force of over 300,000...not including paramilitary units)...as the AFP had recently obliterated/crushed the Huk rebellion. A proof our our military might....

Very good choice of tactic, sir, and I didnt really think about that until now. When i was playing, i actually underestimated my challenger, and his one pawn actually made it through the opposing side, and he resurrected a rook (to my dismay), which was used to take my queen (as seen in the far right). After this upset, I immediately neutralized his rook with rook (as seen in the picture). That was his last offensive-coordinated attack, actually (his Battle of the Bulge, so to speak). After that, i was more obsessed in taking him out, and allowed the sacrifice of my knight for the end result, the decapitation strike. lol.

We play frequently in chess, both of us having our own wins and losses. He's primarily more focused on defense, whereas I utilize a coordinated offense, and test his defenses until a weak spot (usually knight-based) is identified. His strengths are his effective use of pawns (which is the reason why i adopted a 'clean house' doctrine against my opponents). Which i wont deny is rather satisfying in seeing the enemy reduced to his last piece

My weakness: unecessary calculated risks; i primarily am offensive-based, and if i come into contact with a very effective defensive player, i exhaust my resources. And my defenses are minimal at best after a full-out attack. Leading to my pathetic adoption of a 'run' policy. Trying best to end the game in a stalemate. But i regard a stalemate as a loss, on my part.

Easy Mates

    Some mates do not require a lot of pieces. Some are also very easy to learn and do.

    You know that the Queen is the best piece on the board, but it cannot checkmate the King by itself. If you have a King and a Queen left and your opponent just has his or her King, then you can checkmate your opponent by having the opponent's King on the rim and your queen above it guarded by the King.

    Another one is a four-move checkmate. The moves for this checkmate are White Pawn to E4, White Queen to F3, White Bishop to C4, White Queen to F7. There are quite a few moves that black can do to block this. You must be careful not to make a mistake or you could lose your Bishop or your Queen.


There is also a two-move checkmate but both people must do certain moves. This is a checkmate done to white.    This mate is 1. white Pawn to F4, 2. black Pawn to E5, 3. white Pawn to G4, 4. black Queen to H4. Checkmate.

Mao jud, happy Addictive jud kaayo nang chess for me, the first time i played it was when i was 18 y/o, kai ning play ko with my little cousin (she was 12 at the time). Na pildi jud ko, kai i didnt know how to make moves at first; i lost like 8 consecutive games in a row, pero every time na loose ko, mo remember man jud ko sa iyahang technique lol. Mo use man jud na siya sa iyang pawn, ug iyang knights in the same manner each game, naka remember jud ko.. until i got it. Kanang chess, its all about learning from your mistakes, you win, you loose. For me, i get the thrill of the chase, kai there is a time bitaw where you think you have someone cornered, pero, he or she pulls something random and completely defied your plan of attack....that is my favorite. Kai i love surprises, and ug ma pildi ko, mo accept ko....pero i will always observe and remember their moves...so in the rematch, maka square off pood ta ba. hahahaha.

Ako, if im winning a game, i dont like to end the game quickly. Like you seen the picture with the game with Luke, i like to 'clean house' hahaahaha. Kai, ang important thing in chess is that you must not underestimate a player, and never leave an enemy's pawn in safety. Because, god forbid, their pawn makes it to the opposing field, he or she can resurrect any piece they want (even a queen). Patay ta if that happens, lol.

Naa jud ko friend, his name is Georgi Cholakov, he is so brilliant in chess. He defeated me in literally 8 moves. Completely took me out of surprise and marched right through my defenses. Gusto lagi ko mo copy sa iyang techniques, pero, he plays so fast. Mo respect jud ko sa tawo ing ana kai, they can predict your moves (he predicted most of my moves by merely looking at my eye movement).

Titillating pood na ang chess, kai it really is a game of wits and strategy. A game of the minds.

This was a very good game actually, which i played with a veteran player.

What happened after the picture was taken:

Black moved to A8, i countered it by moving my rook in E8 position to check him, he moved his king to A7 position, I moved my pawn to A5 position. He then moved the king to B6 position, i repositioned my rook to E5 . He ate my knight in C5 (which i allowed as a sacrificial bait), but my rook check mated him in C5 . Good game.

Took us about 45 mins to end it.

So what are you favorite techniques? Your favorite chess piece? Any one here a master, a novice, a rookie a beginner?
For me, I'm a novice at this game, pero learning to understand more. And my favorite chess piece is the knight. Tho I love taking out my challenger's bishops and queen.

Favorite move: Queens gambit.

I like to go offense, and barrage my enemy until his defenses show an opening. I like to implement what is called "flanking of the rooks".

Today is a very vexing day for me. I wont deny it. Classes went alright, hanged out with my friends, did my usual work out, but i cant help but feel a sense of loss here in our beloved TB. I miss some individuals and feel bad that I couldnt have done something about it. But that goes into the point im trying to bring up, which is "don't look at the past and question 'what could have been', but look to the future and ask 'what will be'" Though we as a group have been affected lately on some issues, im sure, im definitely sure that we will rise over this.

Since 1965 it has been clear that the future course of Filipino nationalism depends chiefly on the support of these groups and on the degree of unity that they can achieve, both internally and among themselves. Insofar as strategy is concerned, the main point  of disagreement involves the issue of whether to work within the existing political system in the struggle for reform, or to attempt to alter the system itself as part of the struggle. Adherents of the former position will be termed pragmatic or moderate nationalists and those of the latter, ideological or radical nationalists.

But even for those in favor of altering the political system--on the ground that is dominated by upper-class elites and is totally unresponsive to the urgent need for change--are divided on the question of how to bring about change. Some prefer attempting to transform the outlook of those who run the system, by exerting pressure on them through the mass media, for example, and by reform of the educational system. Others favor more immediate and more drastic action, up to and including resort to violence and revolution (NPA,MILF,MNLF). The chagnes for a revolution in the Philippines in the 1970s will be discussed in the concluding section following a survey of the major elements involved in the nationalist movement and the issue that divide them.

The two potentially most important urban-centered sources of support for contemporary Philippine nationalism are the emerging class of industrial and commercial entrepreneurs (in terms of financial assistance) and the ranks of the organized labor (in terms of numerical support). Unfortunately for the nationalist cause, however, neither group has been particularly helpful in this regard, at least as the radical nationalists see things. Business and labor constitute the backbone of the pragmatic nationalist membership, but attentin will be foucsed here on the activities of the radicals--chiefly comprised of intellectuals and of students--who have had a far greater impact than the moderates of the nationalist movement.

Until the end of the 1940s, the Philippine economic elite was composed almost entirely of landlords and those whose wealth derived form the agricultural sector. By the 1950s, however, a new group of Filipino industrialists began to emerge, largely the result of the government's imposition of import and exchange controls in 1949. Among other things, this development encouraged the establishment of various processing and other industries. It also served to demonstrate to Filipino businessmen that, with adequate protection, they have the ability to engage in industrial development. By the time that import and exchange controls were removed in 1962, the ranks of the new entrepreneurs had grown considerably and most were able to survive the adverse effects of decontrol, though not without some difficulty.

Despite their increased numbers and financial strength, the new entrepreneurs have not played an important political role, chiefly because as the radical nationalists argue--they are not united on the question of wheter to ally themselves with the traditional Filipino elites and American business interests, or to side with the forces favoring social and political reform. Many of the new business elites oppose American economic imperialism, but at the same time have little regard for the Filipino masses. As a result, accoriding to the ideological nationalists, they are led to support the American military presence in the country if not only because this assures the protection of capitalism against any attempt to alter the status quo by forceful means. Other Filipino entrepreneurs who sympathize with the masses are prevented from acting on their beliefs by fear of losing their market and credit links with Filipino and American finances.

I've actually read reports of people who drank 7-10 cups of coffee per day--being sent to the ER for cardiac arrest.

Ma addicted jud na ahong amigos sa 'bicco' kai, every saturday mo lutu man ko pinoy food (this weekend, i cooked adobong baka, menudo and piniritong isda with rice of course, lol). Hadlok kaayo kai, while i was cooking, my housemates (who live downstairs in our apartment) smelled what i was cooking and came to the kitchen area and just sat on the table and asked what the 'smell was' hahaha. LOL. Ma kilig pood ko sometimes kai, when i eat filipino food, i use my fingers and my housemates also tried eating with their fingers, lol. Gi kaun jud nila tanan...all the adobo was consumed, and the menudo hahaha..the only thing they didnt like was the pinirito isda...da!

Pero ya...Filipino food is so addicting kono, says my  friends Bryan and Don.

I don't use coconut milk on mine, pero my mom uses casava and coconut milk in hers. Tastes good too.

I need to learn how to make kasava cake tho...my mommy cooks killer kasava cakes...its like...to die for. hahahahaha.

Haahaha dili diay? ate easy ra na!

Just go to any oriental store, get sweet rice. Cook it in any regular rice cooker. And at the same time, go and purchase general brown sugar. Take any pot and put at least 3-4 lbs of brown sugar and boil it in the pot, add some water to dilute it and to aid in the de-solidification process. Keep the temp around 250 degs or 300 degs and allow the sugar to carmelize (remember to add maybe 1.5 cups of water). When the sugar is liquidated, go and take your cooked sweet rice and place it in the pot of liquidated brown sugar. Mix it. Continue to do so until finished.  Then allow it to cool down (believe me dont try to eat really hot bicco, kai it will burn your tongue...i know from experience, LOL)

Ate, also make sure you save some brown sugar liquid too...so you can pour it over the bicco later on...

And wala! you have bicco!
