Yea i never much had interest in the Jedi. They're too weak and limit their power in the force. I've always been a big fan of the Dark Side...and the power of the force. The great majesty of Lord Vader....and his ability to kill his officers at wimb...

Okay, a side view of Cesar Montano is the best I can do at the moment of shyness. You see, minutes before I realize it was Cesar, a woman sitting behind him asking all kind of silly questions, such as, do you this such and such movie star and this movie star. Cesar politely reply with a "no, I don't know them”. Next time you know it, this woman started taking video of this poor man while trying to stow away his backpack and buckling his seat belt. I could only imagine how annoying that was for him but he was patient and ignored the entire ordeal.

I never knew Cesar, his movie career, his singing career or other things like his unsuccessful bid in politics and I still do not. What I know is this man on the same flight with me, within reaching distance from my seat, helped an elder woman having trouble opening her bag of crackers, politely disregard a over the edge fan, and seek no special treatment from anyone. The best part is,  he was not on first class seat I think it's by choice.

Therefore, I decided to give this man his peace.  Oh, wait, now I remember him ... his face is plastered all over this truck carrying tons of mineral water.

dude! he's sporting an ipod headphone. go Cesar! ;) Ya he looks like the reticent and calm type. Very bol-anon jud.

General Topic / Re: Filipino Kids vs. American Kids
October 27, 2007, 03:07:58 AM
I agree with you, that the parents too have to contribute in molding their children, afterall children will idolize their parents during pre-adolescent age; the observational learning. Whatever the parents manifest, so too will the child. If the parents are argumentative, and physically abusive towards each other and or towards the child, the child will eventually pick up those habits as well. That is why children who take some kind of drug paraphernalia such as as amphetamines, opioids and or canabis are doing so because their particular parents do not enforce a stern disciplinary method. And or allow their children to get away with things; this of course begins during childhood and continues till post-adolescent years and adulthood. However, of course there are incidents of exceptions to the rule. There are children who live in drug-infested families--who witness their parents taking excessive amounts of alcohol and stimulants/depressants---yet the child himself/herself avoiding the intake of drugs. So we, as scientists, have to understand that the standard philosophy of psychological observational learning isn't full proof.

I agree with you, as I said before, that it is the responsibility of the parents to teach and mold their children. To instill in them the understanding of proper behavior, as mandated by social norms. The pivotal importance of right and wrong, the necessity to tell the truth, and to properly enforce adequate and necessary disciplinary actions if children break rules and or question the status quo (this doesn't have to be physical punishment, it can also be a one-to-one talk with a child, or grounding them to their rooms--i for one do not believe in physical abuse of children, but necessary latus-latus is essential).

Of course there are Filipino families that are not as conservative, and given, my family is very rigid only because of my father--who is the typical patriarchal Filipino figure--in the traditional sense of the word. And I thank him for being the way he is---and infusing in me and my siblings the concept of respect, duty, family, and Bol-anon traditions. My little brothers--though they were born here in the United States, and speak completely Americanized english, can also fully understand bisaya--and speak it fluently. Because whenever we go back to our house---we revert back to Bisaya-mode.

Im surprised, actually, that there are Filipinos in Japan that are forgetting their culture and custom. If not, are they adopting Japanese culture? I always thought that the Japanese had and practiced the confucian thought. In which the father is supreme, the mother secondary, the children tertiary. The concept of filial piety and childhood obeisance to their parents. This is no longer present in Japan?

HA! This week has been absolutely successful. I'm satisfied. I recently had my oral deliberation on my research topic before Dr. Ostrofsky, PhD., and Dr. Rankin, PhD, both of who are my advisors for my Biology Senior composition. I defended my initiative proposal, and soundly retorted any of their secondary opinions, successfully. I also recieved word from Dr. Ostrofsky that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Fish and Game Agency has recently reviewed my purpose of research and approved my grant to proceed. A grant of $ 1,800.00 was issued to me to fund my research; coring analysis, usage of the ICP-MS ELEMENT (magnetic sector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer), which will allow a specific analysis of the said metals, as well as allow the progression of a historiographic comparative of Nitrogen to Phosphorus levels and heavy metals indicatives in the primordial epoch, to the advent of human colonization in the 19th century to the modern epoch.

Last week, I went with the Fish and Game association as well as with my professors to sandy Lake to extract oligotrophic limnologic sediments from a core; and were successful in taking out about 65 centimeters of core--which I and my research subordinates will stratify in conducive 1cm intervals. From the length of the given core, we are able to estimate that we can go back as far as 200-250 years. However, after the metals analysis and algal bloom reciprocation statistics, we will be able to find the exact date via carbon dating via alogrithmic methodology.

---
To begin the analysis of the Nitrogen levels of a particular eutrophic lake, one would first need to prepare duplicate aliquots of nitrate standards to yield 50 ml from each Cd-Cu reduction column. The concentrations used should approximate those of the samples to be analyzed and should have lower and higher concentrations. Then take 50 ml of distilled water, nitrate standards, and samples into graduated cylinders; then add 5 ml of buffer solution and then thoroughly mix. Afterwards, add 10 ml of the buffered sample to the column and then discard the effluent. Finish adding the remaining buffered solution to the column in the cylinder and collect the 2 ml of effluent in the same cylinder, rinse the walls and then shake the cylinder. Afterwards collecting 25 ml of the column effluent, making sure to carry a water blank and a standard solution for each column used. Immediately, add about .5 ml of the sulfanilamide solution to the 25 ml sample of effluent from the column and then mix for 5-8 minutes, afterwards then add in 0.5ml of the naphthyl ethylenediamine solution and mix immediately. Allow the mixture to sit between 10 minutes to 2 hours; afterwards then measure the extinction coefficient at wavelength of 543 nm of the solution in a 1 cm cell. Use distilled water as a reference. If the extinction coefficient is more than 1.2 then dilute it by one half with distilled water and then remeasure. If the samples of the water have a visible coloration, a sample blank without the addition of naphthyl ethylenediamine reagent will be processed and obtain the extinction values of the absorbance of distilled water plus reagents (the blank), the absorbance of samples without naphthyl ethylenediamine reagent (if brown coloration) and the absorbance of standards or samples plus reagents. Afterwards, then prepare a standard curve of OD vs concentration for the corrected standards (ODcorr = ODs â€"ODb).
The analysis of Phosphorus comes next, particular concentrations of greater than 10 ug PO4-P/liter will go as follows: obtain water samples of 100 ml and heat to between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. Properly make sure to measure the absorbance of a sample to obtain turbidity correction. Afterwards, add 10-15 ml of the composite reagent from a 25 ml graduated cylinder and mix thoroughly. Afte 1 hour, measure the extinction coefficient of the solution in a 1 to 10 cm cell at a wavelength of 885 nm. Then recalibrate the photometer to zero using distilled water before measuring the extinction coefficient of the sample. Then measure the absorbance of a reagent blank (ODb). Afterwards, subtract the extinction number of the reagent blank and the turbidity-color correction from the value for sample extinction to obtain a corrected sample extinction. Use the following equation: ODcorr = ODs â€" (ODb + ODturb). Then prepare a standard curve by finding the absorbance of for standard solutions, which are diluted from the stock solution.
To collect metal samples given off by coal during the turn of the 20th century, one would apply the following: Metal samples will be taken by core and metal samples will be digested for analysis with an aqua regia solution (2:1 Seastar nitric acid and hydrochloric acid) and headted to 70 degs C for 8-10 hours. After digestion, Teflon filters will be removed and the sample will be centrifuged to separate undigested material from the metal in the solution. The sample will be split into glass and Teflon vials for analysis of key metals: mercury, arsenic (glass), cadmium, lead and zinc and stored at 4 degs C. All metals samples will be analyzed via ICP-MS ELEMENT (magnetic sector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer). Cd, Pb, and Zn should be determined with a standard liquid sample introduction system. Isolation of the said metals are indicative of effects of eutrophication and biota during the specific period.

Some pictures of today's work.

Ah sweet. The core from Sandy Lake; we exctracted about 69 centimeters of lake sediment; which will allow us to go back at least 100-150 years. Allowing Nitrogen-to-Phosphorus analysis, algal pigment analysis, metals analysis (which im doing my comp on). This is the core concepts of the study of Paleolimnology or Paleooceanography. Well the analysis part, that is.

The core again; different angle.

My work desk :)

The limno core on top of a pedestal, which was created by myself--using paleolimnology tool kits (thanks to the help of Dr. Ostrofsky)

Closer view. Behind the core is the equipment that I brought with me to the limnological site to collect the given core. Overall, I spent about $850.00 of my grant finances just merely to fund and borrow these equipment--so that I would have this particular core. Talk about 'workin for the cream filling' LOL!  ;D

Almost finished with core stratification.

My work bench. This is where I spend 4-7 hours of my day sometimes. Doing archival work; and biochemical reviews for my research.

After working 3 hours of core analysis today, i decided to take a break.....

:P

That was my day. Now ...its the weekend. Yes! :)

Dili lang american kids..also the japanese kids, lahi ra.Pero some of our new generations baya, wala na may batasan,di ba?

From my experience, not really. I have a lot of cousins and even tho their bisayan or tagalog is limited (as they were raised here in the USA), they still refer to me as Kuya Bran or my sister as Ate 'gel. Even their own grandparents, they still refer to them as Lola or Lolo or refer to my parents as Tita or Tito. Filipino youth are different from other Americans, even if we're Americanized. Sure we talk with a strong Americanized accent, however, the majority of us still retain and hold on to our cultural roots. Filipino parents tend to be more strict in raising children--and very conservative in social etiquettes. I know that whenever i meet and greet any of my Titas or Titos, even my parent's friends, I give my obeisance and give them the Mano Po. We also take into consideration that our actions reflects our family's name and the image people have of my parents. I notice that Filipinos and Indians are like this--they retain very strict social customs. Chinese-Americans or Japanese-Americans are different, they abandon their norms if given the chance and are too quick to Americanize. I have alot of Indian friends and have been invited to their homes--and whenever they greet their aunties/uncles or grandparents, the youth will prostrate themselves and touch their forhead to the foot of their elders. Its their way of showing respect.

Its just a sign of respect. And remembering your roots.

Be ready to meet patients who will be combative as well, Agnes. Ive precepted long enough in the ER to see how brutally rude patients can be, and seen nurses forced to sedate them by the order of the physician (as the patient not only can harm him/herself, but the medical providers as well). Hope your clinical experience is enjoyable, and I'm inspired that more nurses are as optimistic in the nursing field as you are. Good! Very good! I'm so angry right now. I wish to unleash it here. Here comes Western Union again, the troublemaker.
First, they gave me trouble by not accepting my name Mike because they want Michael. So I asked one of our friends here to restructure my name so I could received the needed amount for my father in the hospital here in Velez Cebu.

Today I run out of funds for my father's medicine and another friend in the U.S. sent funds through Western Union. So it's a big relief when you run out of provision and help from the Lord arrives just in time.

This Western Union outlet at M. Lhuiller in front of Velez Hospital has accepted my student ID in Thailand for two times already. Those two other staffs had honored my I.D.

Now I'm claiming another fund using the same I.D. but another woman, another staff told me that she would not accept my student I.D. in Thailand.

"But Miss, I have been using this I.D. here for two times already. This is my third time that I claimed money in this outlet using that I.D. Why won't you honor it?" I said in English. I don't speak Bisaya when I'm already angry.

Without valid reasons she just thrashed my I.D., pointing the color and any markings in the I.D. as reasons for invalidation.

I told her that I even signed up a customer information sheet with their pawnshop/Western Union outlet, had my left and right thumb marks archived, my I.D. details and everything, including three specimens of my signature.

"Miss, my father is in the hospital and I need this money to buy for his medicine," I was already pleading. "I have been using this I.D. here for two times," I said again. "My Philippine I.D. (an SSS I.D.) is in the blood bank." RBCC here in Cebu won't release my SSS I.D. for 22 days after I replaced the blood I bought from them.

"Dili ni madawat imong ID," she told me point blank.

I am no saint. My blood finally shoots up. I have been sleepless, stressed out, drained out, troubled, tired, with all the discomfort mentally, emotionally, and physically.

"P-u-t-a-ng i-n-a!" I exclaimed. "Ambi na akong I.D. beh," I said and I punched the M. Lhuiller pawnshop window. Yes, I did it with moderate force. I already lost my composure. And I left the place and went to an Internet Cafe and logged in to Tubag Bohol.

Mike, Im sorry you had to go through that, bro. Is there any way at all that you can use that ID again? I sent something this week, bro. I hope you are able to recieve it. I'll pray that everything becomes alright. Mike, get some sleep, pre. Please please, take care of yourself pood. Im worried about your health, because our bodies can only take so much stress and lack of sleep....

Please relax pood, bro. God bless.

Don't Stop Believin'
- Journey

Just a small town girl
Living in a lonely world
She took the midnight train going anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train going anywhere

A singer in a smoky room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

{Refrain}
Strangers, waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Paying anything to roll the dice
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

{Refrain}

Don't stop believing
Hold on to that feeling
Streetlight people

^ I like that. My mom is like that as well, she is brutally honest, and will tell me what i dont want to know, and i appreciate it that she tells me the truth on things. Id rather hear the truth from my own Mother than from anyone else...from the one that carried me in her womb for 9 whole months and delivered me after 24 hours of labor. If she can go through that for me---then it is my job to listen to her (the least i can do); and we all should listen to our parents. Because the parents speak the truth. We may not want to hear it, but it is good for us. IMHO.

Quote from: Way Nada on October 24, 2007, 12:02:22 PM
The president of France can also intrduce laws to parliament. This is the type Marcos copied during Martial Law.

Thats true, however, there are proponents as well as opponents of the electoral collegiate system. The United States itself is having its own discourse in either ridding of the electoral college or maintaining it--more so than in the past. Even as we speak, the Republican Party has already introduced a new bill in order to 'split' the electoral votes of a said state in accordance to the percentage of democratic and/or republican supporters of that given state, rather than committing the entire electoral vote of a particular state to a given candidate. A specific example; there are debates occuring in Congress on a bill to split the electoral vote in California (which provides over 55 electoral votes) to either a republican and democratic candidate based on the number of supporters in that state.

The United States' democratic system has loopholes as well, and is subject to change as time progresses, however, you make a credible point; Way Nada. However, I am totally opposed to a parliamentary sytem in the Philippines. Its way too chaotic, one that our country cannot afford to experience right now. Our system of government is effective, given there are loopholes and corruption, however keep in mind that it has only been 61 years since our independence and 21 years since the fall of the Marcos regime and the reverting back to the democratic process. The Philippine system is not perfect because it is an infant in comparison to the aged-time-tested systems of the west. Sure we compare ours to the United States, but the United State's system has been subject to change throughout its history. The United States once relied on state-based constitutions in the past, then towards the Federalist Papers, then the Confederation system, and then to the present system that we have today. However, the United States has had 231 years to build on its political system since independence. The Philippines hasn't even begun our 62nd year of independence.

Of course there are things that need to be addressed, that is what there future generation is for. That is why it is imperative that we infuse into the youth the necessity and fragile hopes of political righteousness, reverence for God, loyalty to the state and government, love of the Philippine fatherland instead of criticizing it all the time. How can we develop our nationalist pride if we, as a people, continue to look down on ourselves and our system? Look at the Indonesians and the Thais, their system is in poorer state than ours, which has a wider democratic processes, however they are proud of their country. National pride and sentimentality is high in their society. We, as Filipinos, need to emulate that. Pride in the Philippines, love of country and our system--despite the challenges and problems. It is OUR country. Our bayan.

i would care most for telling the truth, even it dares painful acceptance... for it is the truth that would connect to loyalty and love.

when we focus on pleasing people, we cannot please everyone as we have individual differences and perspectives.  When we don't speak of the truth just to please others is tantamount to superficiality, insincerity, biases and not being the real YOU, that would lead to misconception of a false facade...

Well said. It is through the inferno and fire that a grain of sand is molded into fine glass. Truth will buckle the ignorance of many, and is the only answer to the supplications of others.

As what the great Virgil once said, "The wise will speak the truth, and the imbecile will try his hardest to disprove the truth. For that is the reason why the imbecile IS an imbecile."

Introduce Yourself / Re: How Is Your Day?
October 24, 2007, 10:12:20 AM
Today was a rainy day. Work. Work and more Work!! Met up with my pre-med advisor, she congratulated me--and i also did a talk with other underclassmen pre-meds; I was part of a 6 membered panel of students who were accepted to med schools. So other pre-meds had the chance to ask us about the MCATs (medical college admission tests), the required courses, the application process, what we did, how we dealt with rejection and how we dealt with acceptances etc. What was really hilarious was that there were 6 of us who were giving talks, and there were 3 of us who were Filipino, one was Pakistani, the other two were putis. 4 out of 6 were Asian. And out of the 4 asians, 3 were Filipino. Says alot about the American medical field. Can I say "Asian-dominated"?

Lorenzo, I admire your talent when it comes to fragrances. Para nako, basta humot ok na. I've come to realize that wearing perfumes is like wearing clothes, too. Thanks for the inspiration...

;D Well, perfumes here in the Philippines cost much.Like a bottle of beyond paradise is around 3K. i like the green bulgari but it costs around that amount, too.  Mao na we don't dwell too much on perfumes. Colognes are much more popular here. Most girls like Victoria's Secret kay it's around 500 lang og dako na. But we have local fragrances from Penshoppe and Bench. And GEC is right, there's always Johnson's Baby Cologne and its counterparts.

Well, I have favorite perfumes, too. (kinsay manggasa? hehehe!) I like beyond paradise, pleasures, bulgari.   ;D

Bulgari is very sexy. Its just like Calvin Klein's Euphoria. Great tastes, Mel. Very...

Wow. It's like reading a strategy map, Lorenzo.
If this is the desired outcome, this is the strategy to employ.
Calculated. Foreseen. Controlled.

I only have one weapon in my arsenal:

"Johnson's Baby Cologne.... bago ligo ang pakiramdam" ;D

Works for me everytime, anytime.

hahaha mao bitaw, GEC. So i assume you're always 'Fresh as a baby' ? I bet the girls go ga-ga for you wherever you go, sir? ;)

and these bloody jews people dont even recognize jesus as their savior!

They're not bloody, pre. They are the way they are because of their traditions. It was foretold in scripture that they will not believe---the prophets were there for them. So long as they follow the core beliefs of the Talmud and the Tora, that they uphold the Sabbath, that they believe in God. They are saved. God is MERCY, LOVE, TRUTH and FORGIVENESS.

Christ came not for the Jews, but he came for the Gentiles. He did not come for the righteous, but for the sinners, the low, the maltreated, the sickly, the prostitutes, the deceivers. As he said, "the mighty shall be cast down in their arrogance and the lowly shall be lifted to the LORD." Just as what the Father did to the tower of Babel, just as he smitten the cities of Sodom and Gamora, just as he swallowed Pharaoh's charriots.

The second coming will be the answer.

This is the eternal prayer, the prayer that Jesus Christ gave to us, to his disciples--and to the Catholic Church--which has spread that prayer through all 4 corners of the world. Protestant churches retain this prayer as well--as they retain some credence to their Catholic roots.

Leo, I pray this prayer every day. When i wake up, before i begin work, and before i sleep. I cannot explain the power of prayer. It is a miracle...in its own right.

And the song that was sung by His Holiness Pope John Paul II is like the voice of angels...and brings me to tears everytime I hear it. The Vicar of Christ Jesus himself...singing that song...

Marry someone of another culture?

That is a very hard question, i must admit, and I guess it would depend on the character of the woman, one that would be compatible with me, you know? People of other races and cultures are interesting and beautiful in their own regard, and I wont deny that I've dated girls that were of a different background. Experiences have been varied, so to say. However, when it comes to marriage (this is my own personal opinion) one is expected to last the long haul--to be there for one another through thick or thin, through the good days as well as the bad, to be there for one another and support each other and provide the proper foundation for the raising of children, which I believe culminates a union. Marriage, to me, is sacred, a union of two souls, under the presence of God--to be there for one another in our earthly existence--to be loyal to one another UNTIL death parts them.

I'll tell you about myself, I'm a conservative man, a traditionalist so to say. Though I'm open minded, I maintain a solid rock in the teachings of what my mother and father have infused in me---a strong Catholic, Filipino, Bisayan, Boholano identity. I would like to retain that identity and pass that on to my children--and that is why when it comes to marriage, I am strictly looking to find a Filipina future-Mrs. Bran Lorenzo Lucino (hopefully a boholana or bisayan). I want my children to learn the bisayan language, to understand our culture, respect it, appreciate it and pass it on to their own families in the future. There is no woman out there---as beautiful and lovely as a Filipina, especially a Boholana woman. :)

Also, all those in here who are married to foreign men, there is nothing wrong with that. So long as you're happy and content---and what counts most of all...that you're in love and being loved, diba?. Your spouses are very lucky because they married beautiful souls as yourselves! Be happy, and live happy.

#51686
hahahaha o really? i remember my uncle went to the tarsier sites and there were men who were dressing up as women trying to flirt with him (he video taped this, of course) hahaha.

Hows your stay in Bohol so far, Ben?
