Nicolas Poussin's floating putti
#50214
A putto (plural putti) is a figure of a human baby or toddler, almost always male, often naked and having wings, found especially in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art. The figure derives from ancient art but was rediscovered in the early Quattrocento. Putti are distinct from cherubim, but some English-speakers confuse them with each other, except that in the plural, "the Cherubim" refers to the biblical angels, while "cherubs" is used more often to refer to the child-like representations (putti) or in figurative senses. Putti are allegorical, non-literal figures, and later in Christian art came to represent the omnipresence of God. A putto representing a cupid is also called an amorino (plural amorini). --Wiki

CAMOTES ISLAND, Cebu, Philippines â€" Following its recent international recognition as the 2011 United Nations (UN) Sasakawa Awardee for Disaster Risk Reduction last May, the town of San Francisco in this island was recently visited by four government officials from Sri Lanka to observe and learn from its good practices.

San Francisco Vice Mayor Alfredo Arquillano Jr. said the four mayors from Sri Lanka visited the town’s solid waste management system, mangrove rehabilitation area, marine sanctuary and community driven program dubbed as “Purok System.”

Arquillano said the successful implementation of the "Purok System” ordinance gained international recognition because it was able to empower the community down to the barangay level.

It can be recalled that early last month, Arquillano was invited by Sri Lanka for the launching of UN’s "Making Cities Resilient" Campaign where he served as one of the guest speaker.

“The visit of the four Sri Lankan government officials is an offshoot of my speaking engagement in their country,” he said.

Arquillano said he also personally invited the officials as “we are positioning the town as a learning hub for disaster risk reduction.” -- http://www.mb.com.ph/

Batuan - Bohol / Batuan farmers get rice aid

BATUAN, Bohol, Philippines â€" Close to 400 small-scale farmers and fisherfolk in this town recently received rice assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

This as the agency allocated more than P1-million alleviation fund for the project.

Jaybee Binghay, DSWD7 regional information officer, said 356 beneficiaries from the selected barangays of this town each received P2,937 during the program launching and ceremonial payout recently held at the Batuan Gymnasium.

The cash assistance is part of the short-term project of DSWD dubbed as rice subsidy program which is in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Department of Agriculture.

The project aims to provide temporary assistance to small-scale farmers and fisherfolk, especially to distressed families that are in need of help during the lean season.

The program intends to help 126 towns in Central Visayas as it continues to distribute the remaining amount allotted by the government for the rest of the selected beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries are identified using the data from the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction initiated by the DSWD in 2009.

During the awarding ceremony, Mansueto Ybañez, one of the beneficiaries from Barangay Upper Kabaknitan, expressed how grateful he is for the aid he received from the DSWD.

He assured that the money will be allotted for food because that is what he learned from the program’s four-day training wherein they were taught various innovative ways in fishing and farming to improve their livelihood. -- http://www.mb.com.ph/

MANILA, AUGUST 27, 2011 (STANDARD) by Vito Barcelo - Some 2,600 workers in the airline’s catering, airport services and call center operations get the pink slip.

PHILIPPINE Airlines said Thursday it had sent termination notices to about 2,600 workers as it started outsourcing jobs such as catering amid losses.

Airline president Jaime Bautista said the workers in catering, airport services and call center units would be laid off by Sept. 30 but could be employed by the companies that the carrier had contracted to provide those services.

Those who would accept the offer by Sept. 9 could start work on Oct. 1, he said, adding 400 had so far signified their willingness to accept the offer.

A union of airline employees has rejected the plan and said it will exhaust all remedies, including seeking a court resolution.

The airline is to spend about P2.5 billion for the employees’ severance package.

“The spin off/outsourcing is a painful but necessary decision to ensure PAL’s viability and long term survival,” Bautista said.

“We assure the affected workers that they will all receive their separation pay and other benefits that are at par, if not better than, industry standards. Guaranteed employment also awaits them at our third-party service providers.”

The airline said it had started town hall-style meetings to answer workers’ questions about its outsourcing program.

Gerardo Rivera, president of the Philippine Airlines Employees Association, slammed their termination.

“We have sacrificed our collective bargaining rights since 1998, so it is unjust for PAL to reward us with retrenchment for it,” Rivera said.

“We appeal to management to craft a business model that does not include outsourcing jobs.”

Rivera said he believed the airline would include other ground employees doing administrative work in the retrenchment.

“I don’t believe that they are only after the 2,600 employees,” he said.

“Our sources say the management is looking at getting rid of all its ground employees.”

The airline started implementing its outsourcing plan after the Office of the President upheld its prerogative to spin of its non-core units on Aug. 11.

Acting Labor Secretary Romeo Lagman first recognized the validity of the airline’s outsourcing plan on June 15, 2010. Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz then affirmed it on Oct. 29 of the same year. With Jeremiah F. de Guzman and AP -- http://www.newsflash.org/

You say that you love rain,
but you open your umbrella when it rains...
You say that you love the sun,

Weird and Extreme / Angel of Mercy
August 26, 2011, 10:21:08 PM
An angel of mercy or angel of death is a rare type of criminal offender (often a type of serial killer) who is usually employed as a caretaker and intentionally harms or kills persons under their care. The angel of mercy is often in a position of power and may decide the victim would be better off if they no longer suffered from whatever severe illness plaguing them. This person then uses their knowledge to manufacture the death of the victim. As time goes on, this behavior escalates to encapsulate the healthy and the easily treated.

Some people with a pathological interest in the power of life and death tend to be attracted to medical professions or acquiring such a job. Medical professionals will kill their patients for money, for a sense of sadistic pleasure, for a belief that they are "easing" the patient’s pain, or simply "because they can". --Wiki

August 26, 2011, 10:15:45 PM
Harold Fredrick Shipman (14 January 1946 â€" 13 January 2004) was a convicted English serial killer. A former doctor by profession, he is one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history with 218 murders being positively ascribed to him, although the actual number is probably much higher.

On 31 January 2000, a jury found Shipman guilty of 15 murders. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and the judge recommended that he never be released.

After his trial, the Shipman Inquiry, chaired by Dame Janet Smith, investigated all deaths certified by Shipman. About 80% of his victims were women. His youngest victim was Peter Lewis, a 41-year-old man. Much of Britain's legal structure concerning health care and medicine was reviewed and modified as a direct and indirect result of Shipman's crimes, especially after the findings of the Shipman Inquiry, which began on 1 September 2000 and lasted almost two years. Shipman is the only British doctor found guilty of murdering his patients. --Wiki

History / Harold Shipman: Doctor Death
August 26, 2011, 10:13:05 PM

Harold Shipman was born on January 14th, 1946, the second of four children to devout Methodist parents. In 1963, his mother died from cancer. In 1970, he graduated from medical school. He became a doctor and a respected member of his community. However, he injected his patients â€" most of them seniors â€" with poisons.

His last victim was the wealthy Kathleen Grundy, who was former mayor of Hyde, UK, where Shipman, known as “Doctor Death”, lived. Grundy’s daughter was alarmed when her mother’s will left nothing to her children, but left £386,000 to Shipman. Police used this as evidence and arrested Doctor Death. He committed suicide in prison, in 2004. -- http://listverse.com/

The narcissist is described as being excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity. Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is closely linked to self-centeredness.

The cause of this disorder is unknown, according to Groopman and Cooper. However, they list the following factors identified by various researchers as possibilities.

An oversensitive temperament at birth is the main symptomatic chronic form
Being praised for perceived exceptional looks or abilities by adults
Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback
Excessive praise for good behaviors or excessive criticism for poor behaviors in childhood
   Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents
   Severe emotional abuse in childhood
Unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents
Valued by parents as a means to regulate their own self-esteem

Some narcissistic traits are common and a normal developmental phase. When these traits are compounded by a failure of the interpersonal environment and continue into adulthood, they may intensify to the point where NPD is diagnosed. Some psychotherapists believe that the etiology of the disorder is, in Freudian terms, the result of fixation to early childhood development. If a child does not receive sufficient recognition for their talents during about ages 3â€"7 they will never mature and continue to be in the narcissistic early development stage.

A 1994 study by Gabbard and Twemlow reports that histories of incest, especially mother-son incest, are associated with NPD in some male patients.

The portrait of hypocrisy is drawn with appalling vividness by Christ in His denunciation of the Pharisees in Matthew 23:23-24: "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and have left the weightier things of the law; judgment, and mercy, and faith. These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel." -- http://www.newadvent.org/

To determine when it is so, cognizance must be taken of the motive which prompts the sinner to adopt his hypocritical bearing. If the end he has in view be such as to be incompatible with the love of God or one's neighbour, for example, if his purpose were thus to spread abroad false doctrine more unimpededly and more thoroughly, he must clearly be considered to have commited mortal sin. When, on the other hand, his animus does not involve such opposition to the supreme law of charity, the sin is esteemed to be venial, as, for instance, when one finds satisfaction in the completeness with which he carries off his part.

With the purpose of measuring the degree of sinfulness attributable to this vice, St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that we must carefully differentiate its two elements: the want of goodness, and the pretence of having it. If a person be so minded as definitely to intend both things, it is of course obvious that he is guilty of grievous sin, for that is only another way of saying that a man lacks the indispensable righteousness which makes him pleasing in the sight of God. If, however, the hypocrite be occupied rather with successfully enacting the role he has assumed, then, even though he be in mortal sin at the time, it will not always follow that the act of counterfeiting is itself a mortal sin.

Essentially its malice is identical with that of lying; in both cases there is discordance between what a man has in his mind and the simultaneous manifestation of himself. So far as the morality of the act goes, it is unimportant that this difference between the interior and the exterior be set out in words, as happens in formal lies, or be acted out in one's demeanour, as is true of simulation. It is deserving of notice that the mere concealment of one's own sin, unless one be interrogated by legitimate authority, is not straight-way to be accounted hypocrisy.

But moral judgments are not resolvable into estimates of self-interest; and if we commit ourselves to classifying conduct purely by the advantages, in terms of the pleasure and pain, to be reaped from it, we shall be forced to appraise as virtuous actions which the reasonable judgment of men condemns as immoral; while, on the other hand, we shall be compelled to brand as wrong acts of self-sacrifice such as, in all life and literature, challenge the highest honour and reverence. -- http://www.catholic.org/

Besides, if the egoistic impulse is made the sole and unconquerable motive of action, it is idle to speak of obligation and duty. Nor can the hedonist, consistently with his theory, claim that he safeguards the pre-eminent value of virtue by recognizing the happiness derivable from it to be the highest form of pleasure. For if one kind of conduct yields this pleasure, while another does not, then evidently there must be some essential difference, unaccounted for in the egoistic and hedonistic theories, between right and wrong conduct, in virtue of which they produce contrary results of happiness and pain for the agent.

Mankind at large understands very clearly that self-interest is one thing and virtue quite another; that self-sacrifice and heroic devotion do exist, and are not vice and immorality; that a worthy action challenges our approbation in proportion to the disinterestedness of the agent. Let it become known that the hero of what we at first considered a brilliant act of self-sacrifice had after all no other motive than to obtain some advantage for himself, and immediately he appears but a vulgar mercenary. As Lecky says: "No Epicurean could avow before a popular audience that the one end of his life was the pursuit of his own happiness without an outburst of indignation and contempt, no man could conscientiously make this--which according to the selfish theory is the only rational and indeed possible motive of action--the deliberate object of all his undertakings without his character becoming despicable and degraded." ( European Morals, vol. I, p. 35.)

This fundamental postulate of egoistic hedonism is, therefore, fallacious. But a deeper and more pernicious vice of the system lies in its primary principle that self-interest is the only motive of human action. This doctrine reduces all virtue to mere selfish calculation, it outrages our liveliest moral feelings by resolving the highest and noblest impulses into a base pursuit of personal pleasure. To say that man is incapable of acting from any motive other than self-interest is to degrade human nature.

Bible Study / Re: Egoism
August 26, 2011, 09:19:15 PM
The undisputed fact that men do experience sentiments of benevolence and perform disinterested actions offers an obvious difficulty to the egoist. Hobbes seeks to evade it by resolving altruistic impulses into personal hopes and fears. Later hedonists, recurring to the principle of the association of ideas, contend that virtue, which at first is pursued only for the pleasure it brings, comes later on, through a confusion of means and end, to be pursued for its own sake. Innumerable analyses have shown that pleasure and pain are not measurable, and still less for estimating the quantity of different pleasures by considering their various dimensions--intensity, duration, nearness, certainty, purity (freedom from pain), fruitfulness--is commonly regarded as a piece of absurdity.

Two of Bentham's statements, when taken together, set forth concisely the egoistic doctrine.

"Pleasure is itself a good, nay, setting aside immunity from pain, the only good. Pain is in itself an evil, and indeed without exception, the only evil, or else the wordsgood and evil, have no meaning." (Principles ofMorals and Legislation, chap. ix.)

"The search after motives is one of the prominent causes of man's bewilderment in the investigation of the question of morals. But this is a pursuit in which every moment employed is a moment wasted. All motives are absolutely good, no man has ever had, can, or could have a motive different from the pursuit of pleasure or shunning of pain." (Deontology, vol. I, p. 126.)

(Latin ego, I, self), the designation given to those ethical systems which hold self-love to be the source of all rational action and the determinant of moral conduct. In a broad use of the term any system might be called egoistic which makes any good of the ego the end and motive of action. The name, however, has been appropriated by usage to those systems which make happiness, pleasure, or personal advantage the sole end of conduct. In one form or another and with various modifications, the principle pervades the theories of the Cyrenaic, Epicurean, Utilitarian, and Evolutionary Schools; and, slightly disguised, it lurks at the bottom of utilitarian altruism. Its typical expression is to be found in Hobbes and Mandeville, while Jeremy Bentham, combining it with the other cognate principle, that pleasure and pain are the only good and evil, formulates it in its full character as egoistic hedonism.

August 26, 2011, 08:53:39 PM
by Eric Engel

Vanity- it’s easy to mask, easy to forget, and easy to justify. We hide it behind dignity and poise. The sins connected to this weakness aren't quite as severe as those associated with pride, gluttony, and lust. But it can eventually lead up to some serious problems. And it can keep us from becoming an instrument of Christ.

The solution (humility) might be one of the most difficult virtues to master, but John the Baptist seems to have had a pretty good handle on it. Here’s the guy who baptized Christ, and later sends his own followers away because he knows his time is over. So what was his secret? How do we stop worrying about our own worldly décor, and start the journey to becoming Christ's hand maid? The answer is self-love.

It might not sound like part of our Christian philosophy, but with the proper back drop, you can maintain selflessness and self-love in a co-existing format. How? By knowing our own self-worth, where our value comes from, and how to improve it.

So what are we worth? Let’s start with the simple fact that we’re creations of God. And since God doesn’t make trash, that says pretty much for us. Now look at the fact that Christ Himself became man, suffered, and dies for us. Wow! That raises the value pot even more. We’re actually worth the life of God.

Why are we so valuable? Because God made us. That’s it. There’s nothing more. All that we’ve accomplished, our assets, and our actions mean absolutely nothing. In other words, our nice house, perfect hair, & stylish clothing are worthless. Our career and community stature are meaningless. Even our good and charitable works do nothing to make us better.

This almost answers the next question. ‘How do we improve ourselves?’ But it only almost answers it, because it doesn’t address the fact that God not only created us, but continues to work through us. So even though we can’t improve ourselves at all, we can let God do it. Give Him control, and He’ll make us better, reject Him, and our value will drop.

So by knowing, and loving ourselves, and desiring to make ourselves better, we can forget about the worldly illusions of greatness. We can overcome the vanity that might keep God from acting through us. -- http://thecatholicletter.com/

Similar to auto-racing, experience and skill is required to maneuver the car and prevent accidents. Hence, in most cases, a professional driver accompanies the group. A group can consist of as many people as there are working seatbelts in the vehicle. Before entering the desert in an everyday-use SUV, it is essential to reduce the tire pressure. This is done to gain more traction by increasing the footprint of the tire and, therefore, reducing the downward pressure of the 4wd on the sand as there is a greater surface area (much like the head of an axe, the axe must be sharp in order to split the wood). For example, tires with a recommended pressure of 35 psi would be reduced to approximately 17 PSI.

Upon entering the desert, it is common to meet with a pack of vehicles and a group leader before proceeding. The group leader then leads the pack through the stunts in single file. The main reason for this technique is to prevent vehicles from losing track of direction and getting lost. --Wiki

Bible Study / Catholic Teachings on Modesty
August 26, 2011, 08:33:53 PM
from Catechism of the Catholic Church  (April 1995 version)

Section 2521 - Purity requires modesty, an integral part of temperance.  Modesty protects the intimate center of the person.  It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden.  It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves towards them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.

Section 2522 - Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled.  Modesty is decency. It inspires ones choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity.  It is discreet.

Section 2523 - There is a modesty of the feelings as well as of the body.  It protests, for example, against the voyeuristic explorations of the human body in certain advertisements, or against the solicitations of certain media that go too far in the exhibition of intimate things.  Modesty inspires a way of life that makes it possible to resist the allurements of fashion and the pressures of prevailing ideologies.

Section 2524 - The forms taken by modesty vary from one culture to another. Everywhere, however, modesty exists as an intuition of the spiritual dignity proper to man. It is born with the awakening conscientiousness of being a subject.  Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.  -- http://blogs.modestlyyours.net/

Although most four-wheel drive vehicles are capable of dune bashing, the smaller, lower vehicles like most mini SUVs and compact SUVs are not used because they have a higher risk of getting stuck. Larger sport utility vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser are more common. The vehicles used for this activity are usually equipped with a roll cage to prevent the roof from caving in on passengers in the case of an overturn. --Wiki

Dune bashing, also known as desert safari, is a form of off-roading, using an off-road vehicle to explore sand dunes. Whilst in some parts of the world, such as the fragile coastal dunes of Australia, it is illegal, in others such as the Middle East, it is a booming attraction for tourists. In the United States, there are a couple of areas as well, most notably the Silver Lake area in Mears, Michigan and portions of the Glamis Dunes in California. --Wiki

Inspiration & Hope / VANITY
August 26, 2011, 08:07:33 PM
Or vainglory, an inordinate desire to manifest one's own excellence. It differs from pride, which is the uncontrolled desire for self-esteem, in that vanity primarily seeks to show others what a person has or has achieved. A vain person looks for praise from others and may go to great lengths to obtain it. More commonly, vanity is associated with an exaggerated importance attached to multiple details, especially external appearances, which in no way contain the value attributed to them. It is ostentation in fashion, wealth, or power regarded as an occasion of empty pride. Thus where pride, though sinful, may have some foundation in fact for whatever one prides oneself on being or having done, vanity is the idle effort to obtain recognition or respect for what a person does not have a rightful claim to. Vanity is attributed to shams, which lack substance and are deceitful (like human praise); or to things without solidity and permanence (such as physical beauty); or to means that fail in their purpose (such as vaunting one's own reputation). It is an inflated pride and, as such, is venially sinful. -- http://www.catholicculture.org/

Facts and Trivia / Re: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier
August 26, 2011, 03:24:24 PM
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a medium-sized, stocky, and very muscular dog with athletic ability, with a similar appearance to the American Staffordshire terrier and American pit bull terriers sharing the same ancestor. They have a broad head, defined occipital muscles, a relatively short foreface, dark round eyes and a wide mouth with a clean scissor-like bite (the top incisors slightly overlap the bottom incisors). The ears are small. The cheek muscles are very pronounced. Their lips show no looseness. From above, the head loosely resembles a triangle. The head tapers down to a strong well-muscled neck and shoulders placed on squarely spaced forelimbs. They are tucked up in their loins and the last 1-2 ribs of their ribcage are usually visible. Their tail resembles an old fashioned pump handle. Their hind quarters are well-muscled and are what give the Stafford drive when baiting. They are coloured brindle, black, red, fawn, blue, white, or any blending of these colors with white. White with any other colour broken up over the body is known as pied. Liver-colored and black and tan dogs can occur but are rare and not desirable due to it being believed having a different terrier mixed into it resulting in this colour. The coat is smooth and clings tightly to the body giving the dog a streamlined appearance. --Wiki

From the ashes of a supernova

Known as PSR J1719-1438, this particular pulsar completes more than 10,000 rotations in a minute. Tiny and compact, it's only about 12 miles (20 kilometers) across, but it has a mass that is 1.4 times that of our sun.

PSR J1719-1438 transformed from an average star to a radio pulsar when a dying star in a binary system exploded. The compact core of the star formed with a very high rotation speed from the ashes of the supernova.

When the second star in the system reached the end of its life, it expanded as a red giant and finally morphed into a white dwarf. The pulsar began to suck mass off its companion, causing the pulsarto spin faster and faster until it attained its breakneck speed.

From dying star to diamond planet

What happened next depends on the system. Most white dwarfs continue to orbit the new millisecond pulsar, but some are consumed by it.

"The fate depends upon the mass of the white dwarf and how far it is from the pulsar," Bailes said.

If it is both close and massive, the two spiral together. Astronomers assume this is what happened to the 30 percent of millisecond pulsars found without a companion.

In the case of the diamond planet, astronomers think that the core of the white dwarf failed to merge completely with its companion.

"When they got very close, the star lost a lot of its matter and moved out to its safe distance of about a solar radius," Bailes said.

Now tiny, having lost more than 99.9 percent of its original mass and no longer engaged in the fusion reactions that drive a star, the dead core is classified as a planet.

Ironically, the star-turned-planet is larger than its sun. With a diameter of about 37,300 miles (60,000 km), it's five times the size of Earth, but 3,000 times larger than the millisecond pulsar it orbits.

The planet itself orbits the pulsar in a little more than two hours. The entire system would fit within the diameter of our sun.

The research was published online in the Aug. 25 edition of the journal Science. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

A newly discovered alien planet that formed from a dead star is a real diamond in the rough.

The super-high pressure of the planet, which orbits a rapidly pulsing neutron star, has likely caused the carbon within it to crystallize into an actual diamond, a new study suggests.

The composition of the planet, which is about five times the size of Earth, is not its only outstanding feature.

The planet's parent star is a special kind of flashing star known as a millisecond pulsar, a rapidly rotating neutron star formed from a supernova. The entire system, which is only the second of its kind ever discovered, is located about 4,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Serpens (The Snake).

A gem of a find

Seventy percent of millisecond pulsars found have a companion, which provides additional energy to ramp up the pulsars' rapid rotation. Generally, this companion is a dying star called a white dwarf; more than 180 millisecond pulsars have been found with white dwarfs over the years.

The only planet known to be orbiting in such a system was detected in 1992 â€" until now. "The pulsar was found in December 2009," lead scientist Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, told SPACE.com via email. "We've been on the trail of the companion ever since."

Rebels, looters target Gadhafi family homes
By KARIN LAUB - Associated Press | 11 hrs ago

TRIPOLI, Libya â€" Moammar Gadhafi's son al-Saadi liked fast cars, yachts and soccer, and his beachfront villa was stocked with his expensive toys. His sister Aisha lived in a two-story mansion with an indoor pool and sauna.

As rebels took control of the Libyan capital over the weekend, the luxurious homes â€" symbols of the Gadhafi family's excesses â€" were among their first targets. After driving out the guards, rebels trashed and looted the villas and neighbors wandered through the wreckage Wednesday expressing their anger at the Gadhafi family's wealth and ostentatious tastes.

"I can't even believe what I am seeing," said Muftah Shubri, a resident of Tripoli's western Nofleen neighborhood, as he walked across Aisha's lawn to the large covered pool where a ball and a small rubber boat still floated in the water.

Gadhafi's 42-year rule over Libya had increasingly become a family business, with the dictator divvying up key spheres of interest, from oil to security, among his six sons.

In recent years, the Gadhafi offspring had been involved in a series of scandals: Hannibal got arrested in 2008 in Switzerland for mistreating his servants in a Geneva luxury hotel and Muatassim reportedly paid $1 million for a private New Year's concert by Beyonce. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

A Kentucky truck driver who went into surgery for a simple circumcision but awoke without part of his penis has lost a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the urologist who amputated a cancer-riddled section of the organ.

"loss of service, love and affection"  Photo: AP/Brian Bohannon

7:00AM BST 25 Aug 2011

A six-man, six-woman jury said it did not agree with 64-year-old Phillip Seaton and his wife, Deborah, that Dr John Patterson had failed to exercise proper care. Mr Seaton also sued because he said he hadn't consented to the amputation.

The doctor said he decided to amputate less than an inch of the penis after he found potentially deadly cancer during surgery in 2007. The rest of the penis was taken off later by another doctor.

Dr Patterson testified that when he cut the foreskin, the tip of the penis had the appearance of rotten cauliflower, indicating cancer. A pathologist later testified that tests confirmed the diagnosis.

"What I saw was not a penis. What I saw was cancer," Dr Patterson had testified.

His lawyer said during the three-day trial in Shelby County Circuit Court that the doctor saved Mr Seaton's life with his decisive action.

Mr Seaton's lawyer countered that Dr Patterson should have sewn up his patient and consulted with the couple about such a life-altering surgery and his options to treat the cancer.

"He was mutilated," attorney Kevin George said during closing arguments that took about as long as the jury deliberations. "His manhood was taken."

All jurors declined to comment as they filed out of the courthouse after the trial.
