BATUAN, Bohol, Philippines — Close to 400 small-scale farmers and fisherfolk in this town recently received rice assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

This as the agency allocated more than P1-million alleviation fund for the project.

Jaybee Binghay, DSWD7 regional information officer, said 356 beneficiaries from the selected barangays of this town each received P2,937 during the program launching and ceremonial payout recently held at the Batuan Gymnasium.

The cash assistance is part of the short-term project of DSWD dubbed as rice subsidy program which is in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Department of Agriculture.

The project aims to provide temporary assistance to small-scale farmers and fisherfolk, especially to distressed families that are in need of help during the lean season.

The program intends to help 126 towns in Central Visayas as it continues to distribute the remaining amount allotted by the government for the rest of the selected beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries are identified using the data from the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction initiated by the DSWD in 2009.

During the awarding ceremony, Mansueto Ybañez, one of the beneficiaries from Barangay Upper Kabaknitan, expressed how grateful he is for the aid he received from the DSWD.

He assured that the money will be allotted for food because that is what he learned from the program’s four-day training wherein they were taught various innovative ways in fishing and farming to improve their livelihood. --
