(EIM) (BANATNEWS)

But in a country where roughly a quarter of the population lives on US$1 dollar a day or less, the books have proved so popular because they always offer hope.

Romance author Maia Jose, who began writing in 1990, said the genre centred on the build-up of a romantic relationship that must end either in marriage or in a commitment.

“The book must be 128 pages long and it's a formula, so it must have a happy ending. If it doesn't have a happy ending the reader would be offended,” the mother-of-three said.

The authors typically do not have any formal writing background, with housewives, students and moonlighting accountants among a mixed bag of storytellers.

Jose said she generally took between two and four weeks to write a book, while one particularly prolific writer once churned out nearly 100 in a year.

Even the most famous writers do not earn enough to make a full-time living from their craft, with publishers paying them about 5,000 pesos (US$120) per book.

Melanie Tamayo, a 51-year-old grade-school graduate who cooks and cleans house for rich Manila families, said she had been spending her spare cash and free time on romance pocketbooks for more than a decade.

“If the story is really good I spend the rest of the night reading instead of going to sleep,” she told AFP.

“At times I feel I am the lead female character â€" somebody who is poor and got lucky when she went to work abroad.”

Each title gets an initial print run of 5,000 copies or more, making romance novelists the envy of critically acclaimed Filipino authors.

“They (serious authors) would be happy if their book sold 1,000 copies,” Jose said.

The books have also built a huge global following, thanks to the roughly nine million Filipinos who work or live abroad.

The most famous authors go on book tours to Hong Kong, Singapore and elsewhere where hundreds of thousands of Filipina maids, who are among their most loyal readers, work.

Dennis Gonzales, chairman of the government's National Book Development Board, said the romance books were an important way of keeping people interested in the written word, amid the distractions of new technologies. -- http://www.chinapost.com.tw/

TWN, By Cecil Morella, AFP

MANILA -- In the fantasy world created by Philippine publishing giant Precious Hearts Romances, the men are rich, sexual promiscuity and homosexuals are taboo, and the story always ends happily after 128 pages.

The ultra-cheap local versions of Mills and Boon novels are the country's most popular books, making their authors champions of conservative Christian values and unlikely heroes in the battle to improve literacy among the poor.

“Some people say it's trash, but at least they (the poor) read,” said Segundo Matias, the boss of Precious Hearts, which churns out 50 titles monthly to dominate a genre that has a readership estimated in the millions.

Priced at 37 pesos (about 87 U.S. cents) and written in street-level Tagalog, the books emerged in the early 1980s when an economic crisis forced the importers of western “chick literature” paperbacks to seek out alternatives.

Matias told AFP from his Manila print shop that the local versions turned out to be far more popular, partly because they were faster-paced.

“Filipinos don't like boring stuff. They want stories that move very fast,” the 48-year-old former film scriptwriter said.

Matias said another important factor was that the novels' morality codes reflected values embraced by many in the Philippines, Asia's Roman Catholic outpost where divorce, abortion, and same-sex marriages remain illegal.

“There's no bed-hopping, there's no immorality,” he said.

“We don't allow an ending where one of them is already married and the other one is unmarried. They should not end together. In the Philippines that's not allowed.”

Scientists now plan to study men with these problems and to measure their osteocalcin levels, said Dr. Crowley. Some of them may have a defect in osteocalcin or its receptor that underlies their conditions.

But, he said, “I suspect this will turn out to be one chapter in an interesting and more complicated mystery.”

Dr. Karsenty has long argued that bone plays a central role in regulating body physiology. “The body is not an assembly of silos that don’t speak to each other, but is full of surprising examples of crosstalk,” he said.

In 2007, he showed that bone helps to regulate blood sugar, a result that startled hormone specialists. Working with mice, he reported that osteocalcin boosts insulin production in the pancreas and also increases insulin sensitivity (making the body more responsive to the hormone). Insulin, in turn, acts to lower blood sugar.

That work could prove relevant to diabetes, in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or stops heeding its directives. As a result, blood glucose levels become too high.

Now, Dr. Karsenty hopes to unravel the complicated links binding the skeleton, sugar and sex. Bone mass tends to decline with age, he notes, as do blood sugar control and fertility.

“One idea is that bone might not just be a victim of aging,” he said. “It might also be a contributor.”  -- http://www.nytimes.com/
#50126
Early this year, Dr. Karsenty’s team published a study demonstrating that in mice a protein called osteocalcin, which is produced by bone-forming cells called osteoblasts, binds to a specific receptor on cells of the testes. Male mice that were unable to make osteocalcin (as a result of genetic manipulation) produced less testosterone and were less fertile. When they mated, they had fewer and smaller offspring.

Fertility in female mice, on the other hand, was not affected by osteocalcin. Cells in their ovaries lacked the receptors to which the bone hormone binds.

“We were surprised by that,” said Dr. Karsenty. “We thought we’d find a hormone that regulated fertility in both sexes.” Another compound, as yet unknown, may play the analogous role in females, he added.

Human testicular cells also have receptors for the hormone osteocalcin, Dr. Karsenty has found.

“I don’t know of any hormone that functions in mice but not to some extent in humans,” said Thomas Clemens, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University.

Still, the magnitude of the effect may not be the same as in mice.

The main hormone that stimulates testosterone production, in mice and men, is luteinizing hormone, a protein made in the brain. Luteinizing hormone is “the on-off switch” for testosterone, said Dr. Crowley. Osteocalcin, on the other hand, looks more like a “dimmer switch” that modulates the process.

The question: Is it a critical mechanism or a backup system? Does osteocalcin play a widespread role in problems like low sperm count and low testosterone, or is it more peripheral?

A few years ago, researchers at Columbia University Medical Center discovered, to everyone’s surprise, that the skeleton seems to help regulate blood sugar. Now the team, led by Dr. Gerard Karsenty, geneticist and endocrinologist at Columbia University, has found that bone may play an unexpected role in reproduction. If the work pans out, it may help to explain some cases of low fertility in men.

“It’s definitely an attention-grabber,” Dr. William Crowley of Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the research, said of the new finding regarding fertility. “I think it will turn out to be a seminal observation.” (No pun intended, presumably.)

It is well known that the hormones estrogen and testosterone, produced in the ovaries and testes, help to regulate bone growth. When women reach menopause, estrogen levels decrease along with bone mass, putting them at increased risk for osteoporosis. As men age, their testosterone and estrogen levels decline, as well. Men lose bone, but much more slowly than women do.

“We thought that if the sex organs talk to the skeleton, then the skeleton should talk back to the sex organs,” Dr. Karsenty said.

Apparently it does.

THE HYPOTHESIS: Bones help regulate fertility in men.
THE INVESTIGATOR: Dr. Gerard Karsenty, Columbia University.

For years, scientists thought they understood the skeleton. It serves as structural support for the body. It stores calcium and phosphate. It contributes to blood cell development. And it serves, indispensably, as the creepy mascot of Halloween.

But as it turns out, there may be still more to bone.

Travel and Tours / Callanish Stones, United Kingdom
August 27, 2011, 01:33:29 PM

The Callanish stones on the Isle of Lewis date from roughly 2900-2600BC, around the same time stones were being brought to Stonehenge. Legend says that the pale stones are the remains of the Giants who refused to convert to Christianity, Saint Kieran turning them to stone in punishment. I include the Callanish stones rather than the more famous Stonehenge for several reasons. Stonehenge is easier to visit but gives a far less satisfying experience. You can walk amongst the Callanish stones, touch them, and feel much like the original worshipers would have. At Stonehenge you are bombarded by the noise of two major roads. While on the Isle of Lewis you can see the hundreds of other standing stones which litter the fields and hillsides, so it’s well worth a visit. -- http://listverse.com/
