Global warming has also landed the tarsier on the list, as it reflects the need to understand how the increased frequency and intensity of typhoons will affect the extinction risk of tarsiers.

Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013 swept directly over critical tarsier habitat in Leyte and Samar.

The direct effect of the typhoon on tarsier conservation is still being studied, but it was "unquestionably devastating," IUCN said. (SciencePhilippines)

#5019
Another reason for the tarsier's inclusion on the list is forest destruction.

Noting that the Philippines has been described as a land of "mega deforestation," the report pointed out that "it remains unproven that non-forest habitats can sustain tarsier populations in perpetuity."

The Philippines has also been described as the region where "megadiversity meets mega deforestation," the report said, noting that the country ranks fourth on the list of the World's 10 Most Threatened Forest Hotspots, even ahead of Madagascar, a country that is infamous for its conservation crisis.

It said that as little as seven percent of the Philippines remain forested.

"This is particularly distressing since tarsiers may well be an obligate forest species, though this is unclear and is yet another question mark about Philippine tarsiers that must be resolved quickly," the report said. (An obligate species is limited to a certain habitat.)

Since deforestation has removed "nearly all" of the tarsier's original habitat in many places, the report continued, identifying the conservation priorities of the unique primate is urgent.
#5020
Tarsiers are scattered over Samar, Leyte, Bohol and Mindanao and in an unknown number of smaller islands such as Dinagat and Basilan. Modern genetic tools reveal that Philippine tarsiers are a group of at least three evolutionary significant units, a population of organisms that is considered distinct for purposes of conservation.

Three tarsier subspecies have been described: T. syrichta syrichta from Leyte and Samar; T. s. carbonarius from Mindanao; and T. s. fraterculnus from Bohol.

While tarsiers are used as a mascot in Bohol, the regulation of this tourism practice is weak. Many tarsiers are on display at roadside attractions in conditions described by the report as "heartbreaking, especially as these are nocturnal animals on display during the daytime."

Given the difficulties of keeping tarsiers alive in captivity, it is assumed that mortality among these animals is high, and that replacements from the wild are found when they die, the report said.

"There is a burgeoning illegal trade in tarsiers as pets, which unfortunately, is probably promoted to some degree by the tarsiers' status as tourism mascots," it said, noting that while the use of tarsiers as tourism mascots is laudable, and proves their ability to promote tourism and thereby conservation, the industry in the Philippines is in desperate need of greater oversight.

"Unfortunately, owing to weak oversight, current practices are probably exacerbating the risk of extinction, and this needs correction," it said.

The Philippine tarsier

ITS being a mascot for Philippine tourism has helped raise awareness for its conservation, but such gain could not outweigh its joining the ranks of the world's 25 most endangered primates also from the same reason.

Its popularity with visitors to Bohol, where it is a tourism mascot, is one reason it has landed on the latest edition of "Primates in Peril: The world's 25 most endangered primates."

Both threatened by habitat loss, the tarsier and the Lavasoa Mountains dwarf lemur of Madagascar are the newest addition to the list released November 25 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

"Many populations of Philippine tarsiers have already been locally extirpated and of those that remain some surely are at imminent risk of extinction," according to the IUCN's "Primates in Peril: The World's 25 Most Endangered Primates 2014-2016."

Inspiration & Hope / The original cat cafe is a country

ACUMEN
WHY YOU SHOULD CARE
Because this country loves cats more than the Internet
.

From a ledge way up high, there’s a quiet mewing. Oh, no â€" a tiny kitten has fallen and can’t get up! No worries, and no need to call the fire department, either. There’s no better place on earth for this feline to have a crisis.

In Turkey, people crowdsource cat care.

Cats here don’t really have owners. Rather, Turkish citizens leave out bowls of water, pieces of bread with milk and even beds for felines around town. People welcome them for hangouts into offices, cafes and homes. According to Juergen Horn, who runs a Tumblr about Turkish cats â€" and who rescued that kitten stuck on a ledge â€" every area has what amounts to a neighborhood watch for felines. Two quirky native breeds even enjoy legal protection due to their rarity: A “true” Van cat has an amber eye and a blue eye, while the Angora variety is the only known breed that likes swimming.

Though Istanbul’s cats can credit a certain degree of new fame to blogs and Instagram accounts, the love affair predates the Internet. Cats have a special place in Muslim society, explains Abdullah Ali, senior faculty of Islamic law at Zaytuna College. In fact, these “ritually pure” animals are considered to bring “divine grace and favor” to their caretakers, says Asad Ahmed, associate professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of California Berkeley. The Prophet Muhammad’s love of cats is well documented; he reportedly had a favorite pet kitty named Muezza. The “most prolific narrator” of the Prophet’s messages went by the nickname Abu Hurayra, which means “father of cats,” notes Ali.

But it’s not a complete free-for-all (thank goodness â€" does no one in Turkey have cat allergies?). Turkey has passed laws about feral felines, including an official policy to trap, neuter and release animals. A number of animal nonprofits care for sick street kitties. And not all animals receive the same Turkish warm embrace: In certain Muslim legal schools, dogs are considered unclean, explains Ali. Plus, packs of wild dogs might be a bit more intimidating than street gangs that meow and sip saucers of milk.

So forget the famed cat cafes of Japan â€" where you can share a table with a feline â€" and consider Turkey, where petting cats is as easy as walking down the street.

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) â€" A Mississippi Waffle House waitress who was shot and killed after asking a customer not to smoke was a 52-year-old who spent some of her final moments asking patrons how they enjoyed their Thanksgiving, authorities and witnesses said.

Julia Brightwell of Biloxi was killed with a bullet to the head, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said in an email Sunday.

Johnny Max Mount was jailed with bond set at $2 million. Biloxi police charged him with first-degree murder, saying he shot Brightwell early Friday after she asked him not to smoke.

Customer Richard Bonin told The Sun Herald (http://bit.ly/21kZuML) that Brightwell served him and two friends just before she was shot, and asked if they had a good Thanksgiving.

"She told us she was tired, but she was making the whole conversation about us," he said.

Brightwell had worked eight years at the restaurant, one of four Waffle House franchises in a 10-mile stretch of U.S. 90 in Biloxi.

Mount was a Biloxi firefighter for 10 years but left after being badly injured in a 2002 traffic accident, Fire Chief Joe Boney said.

Gulfport police said at the time that Mount was hit by a car while he stood in the middle of U.S. 49 about 2:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve. The accident was unavoidable and the driver was not charged, they said.

Rebecca Berry, who said she was a Mount family friend, told the newspaper that Mount suffered a traumatic brain injury in the accident, along with other injuries.

"He was a good person," she said. "He wasn't a monster. I don't know, something just snapped. I don't know of any other volatile things that he's ever done. I know his mother is devastated."

Kelly Thrasher-Bruner, a spokeswoman for Waffle House, Inc., said Friday, "This senseless tragedy is a shock for the Waffle House family. ... She will be greatly missed."

She said some franchises allow smoking but the one where Brightwell worked is smoke free.

You're funny.

In one study, 400 psychology students took intelligence tests that measured abstract reasoning abilities and verbal intelligence.

Then they were asked to come up with captions for several New Yorker cartoons, and those captions were reviewed by independent raters.

As predicted, smarter students were rated as funnier.

You worry a lot.

A growing body of research suggests that anxious individuals may be smarter than others in certain ways.

In one recent study, for example, researchers asked 126 undergrads to fill out questionnaires in which they indicated how often they experienced worry. They also indicated how often they engaged in rumination, or thinking continuously about the aspects of situations that upset them.

Results showed that people who tended to worry and ruminate a lot scored higher on measures of verbal intelligence, while people who didn't do much worrying or ruminating scored higher on tests of nonverbal intelligence.
#5041
You learned to read early.

In 2012, researchers looked at nearly 2,000 pairs of identical twins in the UK and found that the sibling who had learned to read earlier tended to score higher on tests of cognitive ability.

The study authors suggest that reading from an early age increases both verbal and nonverbal (e.g. reasoning) ability, as opposed to the other way around.
#5042
You're politically liberal.

Kanazawa led another study that found the farther left you fall on the political spectrum, the smarter you are.

Among thousands of American adults, those who scored higher on IQ tests as kids and adolescents were more likely to report being politically liberal.
#5043
You drink alcohol regularly.

Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa and colleagues found that, among Brits as well as Americans, adults who had scored higher on IQ tests when they were kids or teens drank more alcohol, more often in adulthood than those who had scored lower.
#5044
You're tall.

A 2008 Princeton study of thousands of people found that taller individuals scored higher on IQ tests as kids and earned more money as adults.

The researchers write: "As early as age 3 â€" before schooling has had a chance to play a role â€" and throughout childhood, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive tests."
#5045
You're left-handed.

Left-handedness used to be associated with criminality, and researchers are still unclear as to whether and why there are slightly more lefties among criminal populations.

More recent research associates left-handedness with "divergent thinking," a form of creativity that allows you to come up with novel ideas from a prompt â€" at least among men.

In her review of a 1995 paper, New Yorker reporter Maria Konnikova writes:

The more marked the left-handed preference in a group of males, the better they were at tests of divergent thought.

Left-handers were more adept, for instance, at combining two common objects in novel ways to form a third â€" for example, using a pole and a tin can to make a birdhouse. They also excelled at grouping lists of words into as many alternate categories as possible.
#5046
You've used recreational drugs.

A 2012 study of more than 6,000 Brits born in 1958 found a link between high IQ in childhood and the use of illegal drugs in adulthood.

"In our large population-based cohort study, IQ at 11 years was associated with a greater likelihood of using selected illegal drugs 31 years later," wrote researchers James W. White, Catharine R. Gale, and David Batty.

They conclude that "in contrast to most studies on the association between childhood IQ and later health," their findings suggest "a high childhood IQ may prompt the adoption of behaviors that are potentially harmful to health (i.e., excess alcohol consumption and drug use) in adulthood."
#5047
You were breastfed.

2007 research suggests that babies who are breastfed might grow up to be smarter kids.

In two studies, the researchers looked at more than 3,000 children in Britain and New Zealand. Those children who had been breastfed scored nearly seven points higher on an IQ test â€" but only if they had a particular version of the FADS2 gene. (That version of the gene was present in roughly equal numbers among kids who were and weren't breastfed.)

Figuring out the exact mechanism of this relationship between FADS2, breastfeeding, and IQ will require further study, the scientists noted in their paper on the finding.
#5048
You have a cat.

A 2014 study of 600 college students found that individuals who identified as "dog people" were more outgoing than those who identified as "cat people," according to a test that measures personality and intelligence.

But guess what? Those same cat people scored higher on the part of the test that measures cognitive ability.
#5049
You're thin.

For a 2006 study, scientists gave roughly 2,200 adults intelligence tests over a five-year period and results suggested that the bigger the waistline, the lower the cognitive ability.

Another study published that same year found that 11-year-olds who scored lower on verbal and nonverbal tests were more likely to be obese in their 40s. The study authors say that smarter kids might have pursued better educational opportunities, landed higher-status and higher-paying jobs, and therefore ended up in a better position to take care of their health than their less intelligent peers.

Meanwhile, a more recent study found that, among preschoolers, a lower IQ was linked to a higher BMI. Those researchers also say environmental factors are at play, since the relationship between BMI and smarts was mediated by socioeconomic status.
#5050
You're the oldest.

Oldest siblings are usually smarter, but it's not because of genetics, one study found.

Norwegian epidemiologists used military records to examine the birth order, health status, and IQ scores of nearly 250,000 18- and 19-year-old men born between 1967 and 1976. Results showed that the average firstborn had an IQ of 103, compared to 100 for second children and 99 for third children.

The New York Times reports: "The new findings, from a landmark study published [in June 2007], showed that eldest children had a slight but significant edge in IQ â€" an average of three points over the closest sibling. And it found that the difference was not because of biological factors but the psychological interplay of parents and children."

For this and other reasons, firstborns tend to be more successful (but not that much more successful) than their siblings.
#5051
You took music lessons.

Research suggests that music helps kids' minds develop in a few ways:

• A 2011 study found that scores on a test of verbal intelligence among 4- to 6-year-olds rose after only a month of music lessons.

• A 2004 study led by Glenn Schellenberg found that 6-year-olds who took nine months of keyboard or voice lessons had an IQ boost compared with kids who took drama lessons or no classes at all.

Meanwhile, a 2013 study, also led by Schellenberg, suggested that high-achieving kids were the ones most likely to take music lessons. In other words, in the real world, musical training may only enhance cognitive differences that already exist.

How do you know if someone's smart?

Without administering an impromptu IQ test, there are certain clues you can use to gauge a person's relative intelligence.

We combed through decades of scientific research and highlighted 13 surprising signs of braininess.

Keep in mind, however, that "intelligence" is often measured through tests that have been widely criticized for putting certain social groups at a disadvantage and for minimizing the importance of creativity. Psychologists are constantly finding newer, more effective ways to measure cognitive ability â€" meaning the signs are ever evolving.

On Thursday, Brussels’ Grand Mosque, which Saudi Arabia gifted to Belgium, was evacuated after packets of white powder caused a security alert. Authorities later revealed that the powder was flour.

A four-day lockdown of the European capital came to an end on Wednesday as Belgian authorities lowered the maximum security threat level to “serious” due to fears of a Paris-like attack. Police remained on the streets and metro stations and schools continued to reopen, Michel said on Thursday. France held a national day of mourning for the victims of the coordinated shooting and suicide bomb attacks on Friday.

The Attadamoun Mosque in Molenbeek, which received the letter, is in the hometown of the three Abdeslam brothers linked to the attacks that left 130 people dead.

Salah Abdeslam, 26, remains at large; Brahim, 31, killed himself when he detonated a suicide vest at a Paris restaurant and Belgian police released Mohamed after he was detained over a possible connection to his brothers’ actions.

The “Christian State” group named on the letter is not known and it remains unclear who and how many people are either in the group or were responsible for the letter. Other Belgian media reports indicated that two other Brussels mosques had also received a version of the document.

Jamal Habbachich, the president of Molenbeek’s mosque association, which includes 16 of 22 mosques in Brussels, said he found the letter in a postbox at the mosque and subsequently filed a complaint with Belgian authorities over the death threat. He added that he would request police patrols at all of the city’s mosques, especially for Friday prayers.

“In the current climate, with fear in everyone’s minds, it is disturbing,” he told Le Parisien when asked about the letter. A video posted by Le Parisien shows Habbachich printing off a copy of the letter, marked by the initials E.C., or “Etat Chrétien” [Christian State].

He told Belgium’s RTBF broadcaster: “There are two situations when you receive this kind of letter. It is a document written by someone unbalanced, or it is a very serious threat. What also concerns me is the name of the author of the letter, which uses similar terminology to that of the Islamic State.”

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel last week said that the government may close “certain radical mosques” in the Molenbeek district over fears that it was the location where the Paris attacks were launched.

A mosque in Brussels received a letter from a previously-unknown group calling itself the “Christian State” this week threatening to kill Muslims and attack their businesses in the country, according to French and Belgian media reports.

The letter arrived on Monday to a mosque in the Molenbeek district of the city, the area linked to a number of radical Islamists suspected of involvement in the deadly Paris attacks of November 13.

According to French daily Le Parisien, the anonymous letter said that “no mosque and none of your businesses will be safe” and threatened that “brothers [Muslims] will be slaughtered like pigs and crucified as our Lord converts their souls.”

It also warned that the group “will avenge our brothers who fell in the various [Paris] attacks.”

Aside from religious songs, the priests also sang a number of original Filipino songs, such as “Ikaw Rin ang Mahal” by Leopoldo Silos; “Babayeng Sugbuanon” by Paquito Balbona; and “Barkada.”

Other choirs also assisted the priests in the concert.

The Mandaue Children’s Choir, led by conductor Dennis Sugarol, did its version of Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven”, “Together We can Change the World” and “Light of a Million Mornings.”

The choirs of the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu and the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral also performed.

Fr. Jonas Mejares, rector of the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu, also accompanied the two choirs with his rendition of “This is the Moment.”

Students of the San Carlos Seminary College also sang in the concert.

There were also individual performers, like Elvis Somosot, Jessica Mcyorker, Girlie Laspiñas and Jay-Arr Librando.

The concert lasted for three hours.

After the concert, Palma said he was happy with the turnout.

He told reporters the concert was not just to help raise funds for the 51st IEC but also to gauge the Eucharistic Pavilion’s facilities such as the sound system, lights and air-conditioning.

AROUND 400 priests wooed Catholics with songs of faith and love during a concert to raise funds for the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC).

On its debut night last Thursday, the Archdiocese of Cebu attracted more than 3,000 people to “400 Priests in Cebu in Concert: Faith, Love and Songs.”

Msgr. Ruben Labajo, who heads the organizing committee for the concert, told reporters they expect to attract more people to watch the concert. The concert was held from Thursday until last night.

Labajo also joined his fellow Cebu clergymen in singing.

Wearing white polo shirts and black slacks, the 400 priests, led by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, sang a number of classical religious songs such as the “Our Father”, “Ave Maria” (Hail Mary), “Panis Angelicus” (Bread of Angels) and “O Salutoris Hostia” (Oh Saving Host).

Schrodinger's Cat Tells All
http://www.thespoof.com/
Tuesday, 10 November 2015

FRANKFURT, GERMANY - The idea of Schrodinger's cat has long baffled scientists, entertained meme makers, and horrified animal rights' activists. But one thing puzzles the minds of all who have heard this famous tale:

Is Schrodinger's cat alive or dead?

Recently, Schrodinger's cat, after a 70+ year silence, has come out of the box, so to speak, and has revealed that Schrodinger is a nutcase and a jerk.

Whether or not the cat is alive or dead has nothing to do with whether or not you see the cat die. The cat dies when the hammer releases the acid, no matter if you see it or not.

"Schrodinger did not need to lock me in a box to figure that one out!" the distraught cat says.

Hillary Clinton also says, "If elected president, I will change Schrodinger's name to 'Idiot Catabuser'"

As usual though, it does nothing for her polls. Schrodinger's cat is also running for president now as well.

A newlywed couple killed the wife's alleged rapist before they fried up and ate his genitals, according to police.

A police spokeswoman in Lampung, Indonesia said Rudi Efendi, 30, and his 20-year-old wife Nuriah were arrested at their home following a month-long investigation and are in custody, the Associated Press reported.

The victim's body was found in a burned minivan on October 4, spokeswoman Lt. Col. Sulistyaningsih said.

Authorities concluded that the couple, who married in September, had planned to kill him after Efendi found out on their wedding night that his new wife was not a virgin, Sulistyaningsih said. The woman told her husband that she had been raped a week earlier by an ex-boyfriend, according to AFP.

"I was so outraged," Efendi told reporters after his arrest.

Police said Efendi then asked his bride to arrange a meeting with the man, who was a driver for a travel agency. Efendi then allegedly stabbed the man to death and cut off his genitals before setting his vehicle on fire, the Associated Press reported.

Efendi said he took the man's genitals home and ordered his wife to cook them, according to reports. He then ate them "to cure my heartache," he said.

Official charges have not been filed against the couple and the investigation is ongoing, but police said they could be charged with premeditated murder, which carries a death penalty.

"The case is still under investigation but we strongly suspect that this is a premeditated murder," Sulistyaningsih told AFP.
