Ambot ngano nga wala man sila magpropose ug alternative scheme nga mas barato, pananglitan WiMax technology ug uban pa nga communication methodology para sa Bohol, meanwhile nga pipila pa lamang ang heavy volume voice/data prospective customers.

besides, maintaining fiber optical cables is too expensive to handle but its a good investment gyud hinoon. pero unsaon man sad nato pagsiguro nga kani nga mga IT installations dili panggub-on sa mga dautan nga tawo? like sa mga globe nga mga cel cites. sayangan ra man gud ko nga naa na unta chance for improvement ang bohol pero mangahadlok na nuon sa pagpadayon tungod sa mga panghitabo.

Help & Support / Re: Netiquette
August 04, 2007, 09:00:59 PM
SOURCE: http://www.albury.net.au

Netiquette primarily involves any communication you may send out or receive from the net.

This short summary has been largely adapted from the Netiquette Guide-lines RFC:1855. These are recommendations, not rules:
E-mail:

    * If your Internet access is through a corporate account, check with your employer about their policy regarding private e-mail.
    * Don't assume any Internet communication is completely secure. "Never put in a mail message anything you would not put on a postcard". Likewise, independently verify any suspect mail, as addresses can be forged.
    * If you are forwarding or re-posting a message, don't change the original wording.
    * If you are replying to a message, quote only the relevant parts.
    * Never send chain letters, they are forbidden on the Internet. Notify you System Administrator if you receive one.
    * Do not send abusive or heated messages (flames). If you receive a flame, it is best to ignore it.
    * Take care with addressing mail.
    * Allow time for mail to be received, and replied to, keeping in mind time differences around the world and other people's busy schedules.
    * If you want your mail to be read, don't make it too long unless the receiver is expecting a verbose message. Over 100 lines is considered long.
    * Remember the Internet is a global community, and other peoples values and outlook on life may be different to your own. Be tolerant and careful with slang or phrases that may not be understood in another country.
    * Use mixed case, UPPER CASE LOOKS AS IF YOU'RE SHOUTING.
    * Mail should have a subject header that reflects the content of the message.
    * Unsolicited e-mail advertising is unwelcome (and forbidden in many countries).
    * When attaching files, don't send any larger than about 50k.

Mailing Lists and NetNews:
Unlike one-on-one e-mail, a large number of people read newsgroups and subscribe to mailing lists.

    * It is always a good idea to read what others in the list or group are saying for a while, to get a feel for the nature of the list/group, and what is or is not acceptable to the list/group.
    * If posting to Newsgroups, be aware that many are archived, and the archives are available for a very long time. Don't say anything that might come back and haunt you years down the track. It is generally not possible to retrieve messages once they have been sent.
    * Be very careful about advertising, some groups welcome it, most others do not!
    * Watch for and read any FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) before posting a question to the group.
    * Messages should be concise and relevant to the group. Don't post messages to inappropriate newsgroups.
    * Spelling mistakes tend to be the rule rather than the exception. Questioning someone else's spelling is not good netiquette, and not necessary unless it occurs in a critical place, like a possibly mis-spelt URL
    * Don't get involved in or respond to Flame Wars.
    * If you find a newsgroup or topic offensive, avoid it. Sending harassing messages to the group is not only frowned on, it may be illegal.
    * Keep private messages private, don't post to the group as well.

Interactive Services (eg Internet Relay Chat - IRC)

    * Listen to a channel first, to get the feel of what is and is not acceptable. Above all, respect the culture of the group.
    * Remember the world is a big place full of very different people.
    * If you find a topic that offends you, then don't join it.
    * If you find yourself in a channel that becomes offensive to you, leave it.
    * Unacceptable behaviour on your part may get you banned from that server.

WEB Site: Cabilao Solar Project

CALIBAO ISLAND, BOHOL--The residents and foreign tourists here, who were deprived of the benefits of the information technology (IT) evolution because of limited power supply, will now get to experience the country's first solar-powered computer laboratory-cum-Internet café at Cabilao National High School (CNHS).

The solar-powered computer laboratory on Cabilao Island was made possible through the consolidated efforts of the Center for Industrial Technology and Enterprise (Cite), and the German Development Service (DED) with funding assistance from the Gate program of Gessellschaft fuer Technische Zusamme-narbeit and the Municipality of Loon, Bohol, Philippines.

Allan Hendrick Buena, electrical department head of Cite, said the budget for the entire project was P1.9 million covering the purchase of 28 solar panels, batteries, computers, inverter and other on-line services for one year.

The Municipality of Loon, Bohol, Philippines provided the local counterpart funding of P200,000 for the infrastructure and monthly payments of IT technicians in the laboratory, among others.

Konrad Bortoli, DED coordinator for the Economic and Employment Promotion, said the project's main objective was to bring computer literacy to the 379 high school students of CNHS and to provide an income-generating project for the school.

"Before, students here didn't have the formal computer education because of the limited power supply here, where communities in the island are allowed to use power supply only from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. with their existing diesel power plant here," he said.

Bortoli said the realization of the project came after several of their friends who are also the resort owners of the diving resort in the island who showed interest in an Internet and computer laboratory that would also connect the island to the outside world.

Solar panels

Buena said energy produced by the 28 solar panels would be stored in the 24 batteries. Then from direct current, it would be converted to alternating current.

Afterwards, power will be brought to the controller-a gate to give 220 volts, from which it will then go to the laboratory.

He said the laboratory has six computers, five of which will be for the use of students, and the remaining one for the teacher administrator in charge of the laboratory.

Buena said locals and foreign tourists on the island would also get to enjoy the service. Locals pay P20 per hour for the Internet service, while foreign tourists will pay P100 an hour.

"Our Internet service provider is the AZ Communication using the satellite communication service with 128 kbps or speed per second passing the Agila 2 satellite launched by former President Fidel V. Ramos," he said.

With the solar-powered computer laboratory, Cabilao National High School principal Mario Garcia said its students will now have the edge in terms of IT education over other schools in Bohol.

He said the computer course for the students will be put under the Technology and Livelihood Education Curriculum for the third and fourth year high school students.

Department of Education-Bohol education supervisor I Marcelo Vigante expressed gratitude to the German community that made the project possible.

Loon Mayor Yul Lopez said the Internet lab is a priceless project for Cabilao Island, which will now have a bridge of information to the outside world. (Clara Mae Hortelano)

you have my vote! :)

May pinasabog na ding Yellow Bus noong July 7 at nitong July 18.

Ayon kay Robert Kiunitala, Provincial Police Director ng South Cotabato, "Yung managements mismo. Tumawag yung a certain ‘Al-Khobar’. Nagdedemand, di pa daw nag-cocomply yung hinihingi nila. Nag-alert kami pero nakasingit pa rin sila.”

May ikatlo pang pagsabog.

regarding this issue, the group decides not to speak to the media. gi-settle lang ni sya thru the embassy, i believe both parties agreed to some standards and procedures.

Some 6,000 Filipino hackers based in Singapore are set to try to break into the Internet voting system

-- the IT group is around 1600 (registered) mostly computer programmers, ok, let say 6000 IT Pro (un/registered) here in SG but i dont think makaabot ug maski 1000 man lang ang "security expert" even sa group maybe less than 100 ra (including security know-how lang).

anyway, naa na progress about sa system penetration so we'll just wait for the results. pasalamat lang sad sila nga positive kaayo ang representative sa grupo, gisigehan pa jud sya contact sa ABS-CBN for his reports pero wla lang niya gihatag kay dili sya ganahan nga mahimo nga negative ang thinking sa mga tawo regarding internet voting.

NOTE: im not the official speaker of the IT group in SG, just wait for the final statement from the group

Galen, sa Thailand bisag kinsa makakuha ug debit card. Only Thai citizens and foreigners with huge amount of money in banks can get a post-paid credit cards.

Same case in singapore, for PR (permanent residents) "daw" they need to have SGD30,000/yr to get credit cards then maybe more for an ordinary foreign workers. no idea for debit cards...

pero ang importante, spend wisely! ;D

yeah, its a phishing scam... if i recall correctly, metrobank ang usa sa nabiktima anaa... just like sa citibank, the email will point you to a site nga similar jud kaayo sa site nga ilang gigamit (let say citibank) pero the only difference kay nag-gamit sila ug lahi nga URL. check number 3 item from the citibank picture, so you need to be careful sa pag-click sa mga links.

Technology / Re: Paypal Warning (Internet Phishing)
July 30, 2007, 08:55:42 AM
SOURCE: http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Internet/2005/phishing.asp

It is becoming increasingly common to tune in to the news or load your favorite news Web site and read about yet another Internet e-mail scam. An e-mail scam is a fraudulent e-mail that appears to be from a legitimate Internet address with a justifiable request â€" usually to verify your personal information or account details. One example would be if you received an e-mail that appears to be from your bank requesting you click a hyperlink in the e-mail and verify your online banking information. Usually there will be a repercussion stated in the e-mail for not following the link, such as "your account will be closed or suspended". The goal of the sender is for you to disclose personal and (or) account related information. This type of e-mail scam is also called phishing.

    phishing [View Webopedia Definition]
(fish´ing) (n.) The act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the user to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, that the legitimate organization already has. The Web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user’s information.

How to Spot A Phishing Scam
At first glance, it may not be obvious to the recipients that what is in their inbox is not a legitimate e-mail from a company with whom they do business. The "From" field of the e-mail may have the .com address of the company mentioned in the e-mail, and the clickable link may also appear to be taking you to the company's Web site, but will in fact take you to a spoof Web site. Looks can be deceiving, but with phishing scams the e-mail is never from who is appears to be!

Phishing e-mails will contain some of these common elements: (view screen capture above from Eudora)

1. The "From Field" appears to be from the legitimate company mentioned in the e-mail. It is important to note, however, that it is very simple to change the "from" information in any e-mail client. While we're not going to tell you how, rest assured it can be done in a matter of seconds!

2. The e-mail will usually contain logos or images that have been taken from the Web site of the company mentioned in the scam e-mail.

3. The e-mail will contain a clickable link with text suggesting you use the inserted link to validate your information. In the image you will see that once the hyperlink is highlighted, the bottom left of the screen shows the real Web site address to which you will go. Note that the hyperlink does NOT point to the legitimate Citibank Web site URL.

In this instance, the text you click is "here", However, this may also state something like "Log-in to Citibank" or "www.citibank.com/secure" to be even more misleading. This clickable area is only text and can be changed to anything the sender wants it to read.

Additionally, you may spot some of these elements that did not appear in this particular scam:

Logos that are not an exact match to the company's logo, spelling errors, percentage signs followed by numbers or @ signs within the hyperlink, random names or e-mail addresses in the body of the text, or even e-mail headers which have nothing to do with the company mentioned in the e-mail.

Who Is Behind the Phishes & Why
The people behind phishing e-mails are scam artists. They literally send out millions of these scam e-mails in the hopes that even a few recipients will act on them and provide their personal and financial information. Anyone with an e-mail address is at risk of being phished. Any e-mail address that has been made public on the Internet (posting in forums, newsgroups or on a Web site) is more susceptible to phishing as the e-mail address can be saved by spiders that search the Internet and grab as many e-mail addresses as they can. This is why phishing is profitable for scammers; they can cheaply and easily access millions of valid e-mail addresses to send these scams to.

Common (Phish) Sense
After reading this far, we hope that you will be able to spot a phishing e-mail without too much difficulty. The e-mail represented above is just a sample; phishing e-mails can appear to be from any bank, PayPal, eBay, credit card companies, an online retail store â€" basically from anywhere a person may have registered for an account, and usually would have supplied financial information when registering.

The golden rule to avoid being phished is to never ever click the links within the text of the e-mail. Always delete the e-mail immediately. Once you have deleted the e-mail then empty the trash box in your e-mail client as well. This will prevent "accidental" clicks from happening as well. If, for some really odd reason you have this nagging feeling that this could just possibly be a legitimate e-mail and nothing can convince you otherwise, you still need to adhere to the golden rule and not click the link in the message. For those truly worried that an account may be in jeopardy if you do not verify your information, you need to open your Web browser program of choice and type the URL to the Web site in the address field of your browser and log on to the Web site as you normally would (without going through the e-mail link as a quick route). This will provide you with accurate information about your account and allow you to completely avoid the possibility of landing on a spoof Web site and giving your information to someone you shouldn't.

Now that you know how to avoid being phished, there is still the question of what to do about phishing e-mails should you be a recipient of them. First of all, you can visit the Web site of the company from whom the e-mail appears to be from and take the time to notify them of the suspicious e-mail. Many companies do want to know if their company name is being used to try and scam people, and you'll find scam and spoof reporting links within some of these Web sites. Additionally, you can report phishing to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and depending on where you live, some local authorities may also accept Internet phishing scam reports. Lastly, you can also send details of a phishing scam to to the Anti-Phishing Working Group who is building a repository/database of common scams to help inform people of the risks.

The New Phish - Spear Phishing
As with all malicious code, once a small percentage of the population starts to catch on, the perpetrators find ways to make the attack a little different, and this case, make the phish harder to net. The newest type of phishing scam is one that focuses on a single user or a department within an organization. The Phish appears to be legitimately addressed from someone within that company, in a position of trust, and request information such as login IDs and passwords. Spear phishing scams will often appear to be from a company's own human resources or technical support divisions and may ask employees to update their username and passwords. Once hackers get this data they can gain entry into secured networks. Another type of spear phishing attack will ask users to click on a link, which deploys spyware that can steal data.

The Philippines' number one and most trusted newspaper in the country both online and offline has been tagged by McAfee SiteAdvisor as "spammy", meaning PDI is behaving in the web universe like a SPAM advocate. It is ironic that while PDI has gained trust and respect not only in the Philippines but also in countries abroad, it had unknowingly failed to pass McAfee's stringent test.

Problem - My IE title shows 'Hacked by Godzilla'

Hacked By Godzilla - MS32DLL.dll.vbs - wscript.exe
Ariticle By
Chua Kia Nee - Techie Corner

Recently my IE title shows “Hacked by Godzilla” after transfer some files to a handy drive. “Hacked by Godzilla - MS32DLL.dll.vbs” also known as VBS.Zodgila worm was discovered since Nov 23, 2006. It has very low threat (according to symantec report). “Hacked by Godzilla - MS32DLL.dll.vbs” worm spread thru handy drive or floppy disk.

This is basically what Hacked by Godzilla - MS32DLL.dll.vbs - VBS.Zodgila do when it execute:

Creates the following files:

[DRIVE LETTER]:\MS32DLL.dll.vbs
[DRIVE LETTER]:\MS32DLL.dll.vbs
[DRIVE LETTER]:\autorun.inf

Note: %Windir% is a variable that refers to the Windows installation folder. By default, this is C:\Windows (Windows 95/98/Me/XP) or C:\Winnt (Windows NT/2000).

Adds the value:

“MS32DLL” = “%Windir%\MS32DLL.dll.vbs” to the registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Run
so that it runs every time Windows starts.

Adds the value:

“Window Title” = “Hacked by[REMOVED]” to the registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Internet Explorer \Main
to modify title in Internet Explorer.

Attempts to copy itself to removable drives and create registry entries every 200 seconds.

Information above was taken from Symantec website.

the best thing to do? replace the user... hehe joke!
