Family & Parenting / True Stories about Marriage
December 04, 2009, 05:02:11 PM
In Iran, 105 year old Ismael Bahrami who was blind and deaf staggered into court with his two sons, aged 60 and 70, and told the officials that he wanted a divorce from his 100 year old wife because the magic in their marriage had gone.
The couple had been happily married since 1919 but Ismael was adamant that it was all over.
"She does not heed my command anymore," he told the judge, "so I have to get rid of her!"

In Mobberley, Cheshire, England, 100 year old Dr. John Wilkinson began having an affair with his carer, Celia Nuttall. If that wasn't enough of a blow to his wife of 33 years, Marion, he packed his bags and moved in with his new lover to a £200,000 house on the other side of the road!

In 1995 in France, a bride was arrested at her wedding reception when she stabbed her husband with the knife they had just used to cut their wedding cake.

In Wisconsin, USA, in 1984, 103 year old Harry Stevens married his cousin 84 year old Thelma Lucas at their retirement home.

In 1983 a man was sentenced to 34 years in prison after it was found he had notched up 104 bigamous marriages between 1949 and 1981 in 15 countries.
The man used so many aliases that authorities never found out who to charge him as.

Is it Kris Aquino, one of the country’s highest-paid female endorsers or Willie Revillame, the country’s wealthiest male celebrity and TV host?

In Pulse Asia’s survey done on October 22 to 30, close to half of the 1,800 respondents said they would support Aquino’s candidate.  However, 49 percent said they would “probably not or surely not” vote for any candidate endorsed by Aquino.

Meanwhile, only 37 percent of those surveyed said they would choose Revillame’s candidate.  Revillame’s endorsement also did not fare better than Aquino’s, as 58 percent said they would “probably not or surely not vote” for his candidate.

The Pulse Asia showed that the popularity of political endorsers might not be as effective today as they once had been in previous elections.

The survey found that people will not vote for candidates endorsed by the following: President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, former President Joseph Estrada and Manny Pacquiao.

About 79 percent of those surveyed will not vote for President Arroyo’s candidate, while 59 percent will not vote a candidate endorsed by former President Estrada.

Surprisingly, Pacquiao’s popularity in the country does not go beyond the ring.

Pulse Asia’s results showed that 79 percent would not vote for Pacquiao’s candidate.

The survey found that the church had more clout among voters, with 52 percent saying they would follow the institution’s preferred candidate.

Pulse Asia pointed out that electoral endorsements would only get the support of 11 percent of Filipinos, and “would have no effect on the presidential choices of two to five percent of Filipinos.”

General Topic / Hand Gestures to Avoid Abroad
December 04, 2009, 04:46:34 PM
Eating Habits

Americans customarily use both their left and right hand while eating, reaching for bread and while seasoning their food, which is perfectly acceptable in America and other countries in the west. But if you will be visiting a predominantly Muslim country, you must avoid using your left hand to eat and train yourself to just use your right hand, as the left hand is used for other bodily functions.

OK-Sign

Using the OK-sign in America is a positive signal. For example, in an American household, it would be considered polite to use the OK-sign to let hosts know that the meal is very good, as speaking when one's mouth is full is rude. The literal meaning is "great" or "fine". But in some countries, such as Turkey, the OK-sign is considered obscene and vulgar. Just to be on the safe side, do not use the OK-sign while you travel abroad!

V-Sign

In America, using the V sign with the palm facing outwards or inwards means the same thing, which is 'victory' or 'peace and love'. However, if your palm is facing inwards as you make the V sign, you have just insulted the person with whom you are speaking if you happen to be in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia. Winston Churchill famously made the mistake of using the incorrect form of the V-sign to assembled Britons during World War II.

Using your Finger

Americans use their fingers to make the thumbs-up sign, to signal for a waiter to come over to their table and to beckon someone to approach. However, these hand signs do not always have the same meaning in other countries. For example, if you use your fingers to summon someone to you in the Philippines, this act will get you arrested.

Other gestures:
You are eating dinner in Pakistan, and use your left hand to reach for another piece of bread. Your host looks offended! What have you done wrong?   You used your left hand.
It’s not that you went to get more food, but that you used your left hand. In many middle-eastern countries, the left hand is seen as “unclean” as it is used to wash your private areas (instead of toilet paper). As you might guess, “lefties” have a hard time over there.

You get off the plane in Tibet, expecting a nice relaxing vacation, and a Tibetan native makes this face at you. Why?  You are being greeted.  In some parts of Tibet, sticking your tongue out is a friendly greeting!

You are in Kenya, and an old woman spits on the top of your head. What’s going on?  She was giving you a blessing.   In the Maasai tribe of Kenya, spitting on the head is a form of blessing (this is an old custom that is fading away). What is still common though, is the older person of two meeting spitting on their hand before shaking hands -thereby transferring the goodness of their spirit in saliva as a blessing to the other.

You are eating a meal the middle east, and your host asks how you like your food. Your mouth is full, so you give him a “thumbs up.” He stalks away from the table. What happened?
Although “thumbs up” symbol means “ok,” or “good,” in the U.S. in parts of the Middle East, it means you want to have sexual relations with the person you’re giving the thumbs up to.

You flag down a cab in Australia, and hop in the back. You try to make pleasant chat with the driver, but he seems angry. What’s going on?  You insulted him by getting in the back.
In the United States, people hop in the back of the cab. But Australians pride themselves on everyone being equals, so you’ve just insulted the cabbie by hopping in the back instead of getting in the front with him!

Love Talk / The Color of Friendship
December 04, 2009, 04:41:18 PM
Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel.
All claimed that they were the best.  The most important.  The most useful.    The favorite.
Green said:
"Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority."
Blue interrupted:
"You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing."
Yellow chuckled:
"You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."
Orange started next to blow her trumpet:
"I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."
Red could stand it no longer he shouted out:
"I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy."
Purple rose up to his full height:
He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs, and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."
Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."
And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.
In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak:
"You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me."
Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands.
The rain continued:
"From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one another

Fashion Trend / Hairstyle for You
December 04, 2009, 04:35:21 PM

Long Hairstyles with fine or thin long hair worn straight usually will look very boring. However when pinned back it will appear to have more fullness especially if you roll the hair on curlers.

Long Wavy/Curly Hairstyles although classic and feminine are probably the most sexy. For round faces this hairstyle is better than completely straight hair. Either naturally wavy or gently permed it will conceal wide cheek bones.

Medium Length Hairstyles are easy to take care of and style than longer hairstyles yet more versatile than shorter hairstyles. Medium hairstyles match most facial shapes well as there is just enough hair complimenting the facial region and enhancing other features

Short Hairstyles Short Hairstyles are generally best with an elongated oval face, are quick to blow dry or air-dry and can be styled with a little mouse or gel.

December 03, 2009, 04:39:34 PM
A "book smart" person is someone who does well in school, academics, or a field like science or history. A stereotypical "book smart" person is a nerd, or the "librarian stereotype."

A "street smart" person is usually someone who can manipulate others to get what they want. A "con artist" stereotype or someone with good social skills, charisma and political sense characterize someone who is "street smart."

BEIJING â€" An ex-judge charged with taking bribes from gangsters committed suicide in his cell over the weekend in central China, a local government spokesman said Monday.

Wu Xiaoqing, 57, hanged himself in his cell Saturday using the drawstring from his underwear five months following his arrest for corruption, said the spokesman, surnamed Li, for the Chongqing city government office. Like many officials in China, Li would give only his surname.

Wu, who was the ex-director of the enforcement bureau of the local municipal court, was arrested in June on suspicion of taking in more than half a million dollars in bribes from gang members from 1998 to 2008, the China Daily newspaper reported. He was fired after his arrest.

Wu's arrest was part of a continuing crackdown on anti-corruption in sprawling Chongqing that has netted some 1,500 suspects _ gangsters, prominent businessmen and 14 high-ranking government and police officials. Six gang members in the city have been sentenced to death for crimes including murder and blackmail.

Li said Wu was able to hang himself in a blind spot away from security cameras.

The China Daily reported that two police officers from the No. 2 Detention Center are under investigation in connection with Wu's death.

China has a mixed record of cracking down on corruption, but when it does the punishments are often severe. Two years ago, the director of China's food and drug agency was executed for approving deadly fake medicine in exchange for cash.

The most senior official to fall recently to corruption charges was Shanghai's former Communist Party chief Chen Liangyu, who was sentenced last year to 18 years in prison for his role in a pension fund scandal.

BEIJING â€" Dozens of local Chinese officials and reporters face prosecution for covering up a coal mine accident that killed 35 people just weeks before the Beijing Olympics, a newspaper reported Monday.

Officials in Hebei province's Yuxian county paid journalists a total of 2.6 million yuan ($380,000) not to report the July 14, 2008, accident, in which 34 miners and one rescuer were killed, the China Daily said.

In addition to bribing reporters, officials silenced relatives of the dead with large compensation payments and threats of retribution if they talked, the paper said. The measures managed to keep the accident silent for 85 days, the paper said, without saying how it eventually became known.

It's fairly common for officials to pay such bribes to keep higher ranking leaders from finding out about disasters and to avoid being fired or handed demerits. Often the payments are disguised as advertising buys or subscription fees.

Yuxian officials had even more reason to keep the accident silent because it struck just three weeks before the Beijing Olympic Games in the midst of a national safety campaign, when the central government was bent on painting only the most positive picture of China to the world.

Ten reporters and 48 officials, including policemen, work safety officers and the head of the county government, face charges of paying or taking bribes, the China Daily said, citing the results of a probe ordered by the State Council, China's Cabinet.

The report is just the latest pointing to bribery and cover-ups in China's sprawling and accident-prone coal industry, which is the deadliest in the world. Such practices sometimes take the form of blackmail, with reporters threatening to reveal accidents unless they are paid off.

Bribery in China is punished on a sliding scale, with the size of the bribe and the seriousness of the outcome both taken into consideration. Punishments range from the death penalty to suspended prison sentences.

LONDON - Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes might have thought twice about naming their daughter Suri if they'd known that it means "pickpocket" in Japanese, "turned sour" in French, and "horse mackerels" in Italian.

Today Translations, a London-based translation company, is offering parents-to-be -- particularly celebrities -- the chance to check the meaning of prospective baby names in other languages.

For 1,000 pounds , the company's linguists will carry out a "basic name translation audit" of names, checking their meaning in 100 languages, or more for an additional cost.

While open to everyone, the firm said it expects the service to attract celebrity clients who are known for giving their babies unusual names.

While "No Doubt" singer Gwen Stefani and husband Gavin Rossdale may have known Zuma meant "peace" in Arabic when choosing their son's name, they may not have been aware it also translates as "Lord frowns in anger" in the Aztec language of Nahuatl.

Among other baby names the company could have warned about in advance are Kai Rooney, the newborn son of English soccer player Wayne Rooney, whose name means "probably" in Finnish, "pier" in Estonian, and "stop it" in the west African language of Yoruba.

Some choices are beyond easy translation however, the company admits, such as Jermajesty -- the son of Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine.

General Topic / Don't kiss Santa, he may have the flu
December 01, 2009, 12:38:43 PM
Source: Reuters
BUDAPEST - Santa Claus should avoid kissing children and shaking their hands to prevent spreading the flu and should get vaccinated against the illness, Hungary's state health authority said.

In a recommendation issued over the weekend and posted on its official website www.antsz.hu, the authority did not ban traditional Santa Claus activities but warned of increased risks of contagion due to a nationwide flu epidemic.

In Hungary, Santa Claus traditionally comes on December 6, when children find gifts in shoes placed on window sills the night before.

"For Santa Clauses, prevention is especially important as they meet lots of children in early December, and therefore they face a high risk of infection," the authority said.

"If Santa Claus is elderly, overweight or has a chronic illness, and therefore belongs to a high risk group concerning the flu ... then getting a vaccination against the flu is particularly important," it added.

Hungary's health authorities announced last week that the number of flu cases jumped by 22,100 in a week, partly due to the new H1N1 influenza virus.

Determined to pull off a one-woman show in her presidential bid for 2010, Sen. Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby" Madrigal filed Tuesday her certificate of candidacy (COC) for the country’s highest post.

At the Commission on Elections (Comelec) main office in Manila, Madrigal, clad in a neon-green blazer, said she will run as an independent candidate in 2010 without a running mate and senatorial slate to prove that she is not a traditional presidential aspirant, but "a candidate of the people."

"I shall run without a vice president and without a senatorial slate to allow all like-minded candidates and people to unite under a shared and genuine progressive vision and platform of government based on principled politics," Madrigal said.

Moreover, she said she wants to go on a solo presidential campaign so as not to be indebted to any party or big businessmen who fuel the machinery of other candidates.

"My family has left me enough to run a decent campaign," she said.

Madrigal also said that if elected president, she will prioritize abrogating the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA).

"I plan to prioritize the needs of the Filipinos and not of foreign investors. I want to reassert the Filipino sovereignty," the senator said.

Madrigal, who was elected senator during the 2004 national elections, has opposed these two agreements during her stay in the Senate.

The 51-year old senator, granddaughter of former Chief Justice and Japanese occupation hero Jose Abad Santos, has authored and sponsored bills on the protection of the environment and of women while in Senate. These include a measure for the imposition of total log ban in the country, as well as a repeal of the controversial Mining Act of 1995. - LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV

The "Twilight" sequel remains No. 1 for a second straight weekend, though it was nearly blind-sided for the top spot by a real-life football drama.

"The Blind Side" had a great second weekend with $40.1 million, coming in at No. 2 just behind "New Moon." The inspirational story of Baltimore Ravens tackle Michael Oher stars Sandra Bullock as a woman whose wealthy family takes in the homeless teen and enrolls him in private school.

While the weekend haul for "New Moon" dropped steeply from the movie's $142.8 million opening, "The Blind Side" actually went up from its $34.1 million first weekend.
