Beth, you're so right. Specially about having some kind of knowledge about the material first before joining a study group. I can't stress the importance of study groups tho, they're a great shoulder to lean on when you're stressed.

Plus, its very motivating pood to be around fellow peers, seeing that they are stressed as you are, hungry in the middle of the night studying with you, laughing at jokes, killing questions, until the night before the exam, you guys stay up till 3:40 AM and call it quits because of overloading, hahaha. Good times. Good times.

The massage helps during that point; it helps relax the mind and think of something else besides the subject.

OT: Beth, what are you studying right now?

I study best in groups. Usually because whenever I teach a lesson to people, the teaching enforces the information. I recommend studying by yourself first, say probably 2 weeks before an exam. Review by yourself for a week of hard studying (4-5 hours a day; this is what I do). After a week of silent review, organize a study group; say about 3-4 people, not too much because too much can cause distraction, diversion to the purpose of the study.

When you're in a study group, entice members with questions, review the 'overall' summary of a lesson. Why things happen, where, how, what are the specifics. Help answer questions, as well as ask questions if you're unsure about things. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Believe me, you'll be surprised how you will find something out that you never knew.

The last month, I had an exam for Human Physiology, I tried studying only by myself, and I scored a 86%. On the second exam, I joined a study group and everything was clear. I scored over 10 points higher on the 2nd exam as a result. Had the highest score on the 2nd exam.

Like I said, you learn from your mistakes. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

My message to the guys with very controlling gfs/wives:

In the words of my Uncle Steve, "Keep everything in moderation."

When you drink with friends, drink with moderation.
When you have sex with your lover(s), keep everything with moderation.
When you study for exams, keep everything in moderation.
When you party with your friends, do it in moderation.
When you're in crazy love, keep the passions in moderation.
When you play video games, keep it in moderation.

Can never go wrong when you're in the middle.

Facts and Trivia / Re: DID YOU KNOW
March 07, 2008, 01:20:08 PM
Did you know that the visceri Appendix is an evolutionary unecessary organ?
The appendix, which is considered the 'grinder' of the digestive system, is responsible for breaking down hard normally 'undigestable' material such as roots, branches, bones, etc. This was an evolutionary run off when the human species weren't sedentiary farmers, and were still nomadic, living off not only dead animals, but raw and hard vegetation, even as coarse as bones.

As humans evolved into specific and complex civilizations, and developed agricultural tactics, 'soft' food was normalized, thereby negating the need to use the appendix, as nomdacism was nullified (for the most part of human species).

That is why, to this day, the veriform appendix no longer constitutes in importace; normally is removed vis a vis appendectomy.

One of the many hints that traces our evolutionary cycle.  :)

All time favorite Calculus equation has got to be the Taylor series:
Taylor series is y(x + h) = y(x) + y'(x)h + y"(x)h2/2! + ..., helps in calculating infinite series, addressing convergence and uniform convergence.

Mao Zedong

The man that was Mao Zedong was an invaluable player in domestic affairs as well as external affairs in China and Her sphere of influence, namely East Asia and South East Asia. Mao was the leader of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) and resisted the authoritarian federalist government of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai Shek) of the Kuomintang. Under Mao Zedong's influence, the Communist forces took control of Mainland China, forcing the nationalist forces to abandon all control of Zhong Guo (China) and flea for the island of Formosa (Taiwan), where they remain to this day.

Mao Zedong's policies thundered the region as he brought about the liquidation of confucian culture during the Great Cultural Revolution, spearheading China's industrialization and banishing old superstitious concepts and setting aside traditional Chinese religiosity for equalitarianism that communism and socialism mandated. Under his administration, he was able to instill within the youth, the concept of 'perpetual rebellion' against a corrupt government.

His policies were known for its militaristic tendencies. He supported North Korea during its war for unification, generous enough to send over 1,000,000 Chinese Volunteer Liberational Army to drive down the UN and American forces south of the 38th parallel. They succeeded in this, though, his policies led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops. His expanisionist policies also initiated the 1962 Chinese-Indian Border War, where China regained Arunal Pradesh from India. The War ended towards China's favor.

He is known for his eternal fingerprint on the Chinese people. He mobilized the largest and most populous nation in the world, militarized it, and instilled within that Dragon of a nation a raw, unrestrained nationalistic attitude that survives even to this day.

Yes, one can take chemical therapy to balance out the lack of thyroxin production in the case of hypothyroid disorders; to instigate metabolic activity. Usually, CFS is considered a neurological problem, if you have specific questions, I would advise you to ask a certified professional psychiatrist or Clinical behavioral psychologist.

A hijacker armed with explosives took 10 Australian tourists hostage on a bus in northwest China Wednesday, before police shot him dead, media in both countries reported.

The man released all but two of the hostages shortly after taking them captive, but held on to a woman and the group's translator, Australian media said, quoting the country's Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The man had demanded that police let him move to another bus and then drive to an airport, China's state-run news agency, Xinhua said.

The Xinhua News Agency also identified the hijacker as a man called as Xia Tao, who took control of the bus in the tourist city of Xi'an.

Police complied, in part to avoid violence in a downtown area of the Shaanxi province. Once the bus approached an airport toll booth and their attempts at negotiations failed, police shot the man, the Xinhua news agency said.

The woman and her translator were unharmed.

Janaline Oh, a spokeswoman for the Australian Embassy in Beijing told The Associated Press she could not confirm that the man had been shot. Police in Xi'an did not answer telephone calls.

She also said said nine hostages were released early in the incident and taken to safety. She said a 48-year-old woman from New South Wales was not immediately released and that Chinese police had to intervene to rescue her.

"The Australian government is pleased that the hostages are now safe and the embassy in Beijing and Consulate General in Shanghai are providing consular assistance to the Australians affected," said Oh.

The Organization of American States passed a resolution Wednesday in hopes of easing tensions stemming from an attack into Ecuadoran territory by Colombia.

Colombia's military attacked a rebel camp in neighboring Ecuador on Saturday. Since then, Ecuador has broken off relations with Colombia, and Venezuela says it has moved troops to its border with Colombia.

In the resolution, the OAS called the attack "a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ecuador and of principles of international law" and noted that it led Ecuador to break relations with Colombia.

It ordered a commission, headed by OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza and composed of four ambassadors designated by him, to visit both countries to investigate the matter, "and to propose formulas for bringing the two nations closer together."

Colombian officials have apologized for taking their attack against the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia into Ecuador but said it was necessary to counter a threat to their national security.

Colombian officials also said they discovered evidence after the attack that Ecuadoran and Venezuelan government officials were collaborating with the group -- namely that Chavez allegedly gave $300 million to the rebels and that a senior Ecuadoran official met with them.

"(They) are making things up and there's no limit to what they'll make up," Chavez said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa said his country would only be satisfied when the OAS issues a "clear condemnation" against Colombia for the raid.

OAS foreign ministers are to meet March 17 in Washington "to examine the facts and make the pertinent recommendations," the resolution concluded.

Gates added that the United States would not need to assist its Colombian allies should armed conflict break out.

"My personal view is that there is relatively little likelihood of a military conflict between them, and my further impression is that the Colombians can take care of themselves," he said at the Pentagon.

After the OAS resolution, Bahamian Ambassador Cornelius Smith praised Ecuador and Colombia for showing "a desire and a commitment to ensure that we could find common ground."

"With the spirit of consensus in mind, we are pleased that the delegates of Colombia and Ecuador have agreed to a test that could lead to a satisfactory resolution to this impasse," said the acting permanent representative of the U.S. Mission to the OAS, J. Robert Manzanares.

"We wish to reiterate our support for a timely diplomatic resolution."

Results from a new national survey demonstrate that elevated allergen levels in the home are associated with asthma symptoms in allergic individuals. The study suggests that asthmatics that have allergies may alleviate symptoms by reducing allergen exposures inside their homes. The work was carried out by researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the University of Iowa, Rho Inc., and the Constella Group. The team's findings may help millions of Americans who suffer from asthma.

"Indoor allergen exposures are of great importance in relation to asthma because most people spend a majority of their time indoors, especially at home," said Darryl Zeldin, M.D., a Principal Investigator in the Laboratory of Respiratory Biology at NIEHS and senior author on the paper.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic ailments in the United States, affecting more than 22 million people. Asthma has been shown to be triggered by a wide range of substances called allergens.

The findings, published online and available in the March issue of the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, show that exposure to multiple indoor allergens was common in U.S. households with 52 percent having at least six detectable allergens and 46 percent having three or more allergens at increased levels. The indoor allergens studied included those from dog, cat, mouse, cockroach, dust mite, and the fungus Alternaria.

The researchers used data from the National Survey of Lead and Allergens in Housing (NSLAH) to examine factors that contribute to high allergen levels in homes and to determine whether elevated household allergen levels were associated with occupants' asthma status. The NSLAH, which was the first study to characterize how allergen exposures vary in homes at the national level, surveyed the homes of nearly 2500 individuals in 75 locations throughout the U.S. The survey was jointly funded by the NIEHS and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Several factors were found to contribute to the increased concentrations of allergens, including race, income, type of home, and sources of allergens, such as presence of pets and pests. The study also showed that homes with children were less likely to have high allergen levels. The authors noted that this finding may not be surprising since homes with children may be cleaned more frequently than homes without children. Regular household cleaning is a simple yet effective regimen that helps to reduce the overall exposure burden.

According to lead researcher Paivi Salo, Ph.D., of NIEHS, the study provides useful information to asthma patients. "Our results highlight the importance of reducing exposure to allergens as a fundamental part of asthma management," she said. "Although homes cannot be made allergen free, asthmatics that have allergies may need to do a better job in reducing allergen levels in their homes to improve asthma control."

This finding is the first to provide information on total allergen burden in U.S. homes and how it relates to asthma. "This study confirms that indoor allergens play a major role in asthma," Zeldin stated.

Salo and her co-authors, however, point out that more research is needed to understand the complex relationships between genetic and environmental factors that cause asthma, particularly the role that indoor allergen exposure plays in the development of asthma. "Although reducing allergen levels in the home may not prevent individuals from developing asthma, reducing exposure levels is crucial for those whose asthma is allergic in nature." Zeldin concluded.

The Supreme Court on Monday voted 4-4 in a case related to whether FDA approval of medications protects manufacturers from product liability lawsuits filed in state courts, the New York Times reports. The tie vote will allow a product liability lawsuit against Warner-Lambert, which Pfizer acquired in 2000, to proceed (Greenhouse, New York Times, 3/4). Chief Justice John Roberts did not participate in the vote, "presumably because he owns Pfizer stock," the Wall Street Journal reports (Anderson, Wall Street Journal, 3/4).

The case focuses on a 1996 Michigan law that limits product liability lawsuits related to medications approved by FDA. Under the law, such lawsuits can proceed in the state only when plaintiffs can prove pharmaceutical companies withheld or misrepresented information to FDA that would have prompted the agency to withdraw the medications from the market or reject their approval. Michigan is the only state to have such a law. In 2005, a federal district court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Michigan patients against Warner-Lambert over health problems linked with the diabetes medication Rezulin based on the law. However, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals later reinstated the lawsuit (Kaiser Daily Health Policy Report, 2/26).

The tie vote by the Supreme Court affirms the appeals court decision but does not set a precedent for future cases. According to the Times, the case "presented a narrow slice of the broad pre-emption issue that the court will take up in its next term" (New York Times, 3/4).

According to a recent article in the American Journal of Respiratory and Clinical Care Medicine ICU stays, treatment duration, and hospital costs may be reduced if a blood test and a decision algorithm are used to determine how long patients with severe sepsis or septic shock should receive antibiotic therapy. The report by Swiss researchers suggests using the blood test and decision algorithm rather than standard hospital protocols and maintains that there are no adverse effects on patients.

Researcher Jérôme Pugin, M.D. (Intensive Care Unit at the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland) notes that: "We have shown that it is possible to customize antibiotic treatment duration in patients with septicemia based on a reliable and robust blood test."

Pugin and colleagues randomly assigned 79 patients to receive antibiotics either a) according to standard hospital protocols and physician administration or b) according to a decision algorithm that uses the procalcitonin (PCT) levels in the blood. Procalcitonin is a marker that indicates bacterial infections in patients who possibly have sepsis. Participants in the PCT treatment group should have stopped receiving antibiotics according to circulating PCT levels. At these stopping points, researchers suggested that the treating physicians stop antibiotic therapy, but ultimately the attending physician made all final treatment decisions.

Patients who were in the PCT group received 3.5 fewer days of antibiotic therapy than the control group, but the difference was not significant when analyzing all 79 participants. After controlling for early drop-outs, infections that were previously undiagnosed, and patients whose physicians who did not halt antibiotic treatment according to the algorithm, the researchers determined that PCT patients had a significantly shorter treatment time at 6 days compared to control group patients who averaged 12.5 days on antibiotics.

Pugin notes that this researche is the "first randomized clinical trial in which a surrogate biochemical parameter was used to reduce the duration of antibiotic therapy in a population of critically ill patients admitted to the ICU for severe sepsis and septic shock." Although there was a somewhat short treatment time in bacteremic patients in the PCT group, "no case of recurrence of infection was observed in these patients."

In addition, patients with PCT treatment stayed in ICU three days compared to five days for control group patients, a significantly shorter length of time.

Pugin adds that the treatment based on PCT levels not only can save hospitals money and reduce the length of ICU stays, but it can reduce the likelihood of antibiotic resistance due to overuse. "Overuse of antibiotics can result in antibiotic resistance."Given the diversity of the types of infections, bacterial strains and levels of host immune defense, every infected patient should benefit from a personalized treatment, and particularly, a personalized treatment duration," he notes.

Hoping that these customized treatments will become internationally available, the researchers wish to improve sepsis care around the world. "We have now implemented this new algorithm based on procalcitonin guidance in our ICU for patients presenting with severe sepsis and septic shock, and are following the outcome of those patients," writes Dr. Pugin. "Currently, three large multi-center trials are ongoing in France, Denmark and Germany, with a design similar to that of our study. Results from these studies will be important to determine whether such a protocol of procalcitonin guidance is definitely safe and can be generalized worldwide."

A new study by scientists in the UK and France has shown it is possible to fine tune the magnetic properties of tiny "nano" magnets made by bacteria, and this technology could one day be developed to target cancer tumours.

The study is the work of Dr Sarah Staniland of the School of Biological Sciences, University of Edinburgh, and colleagues, including Dr Andrew Harrison who is based at the The Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, and is published in the early online issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Some bacteria have the ability to digest iron into tiny nanoparticles of magnetite (Fe3O4) that are enclosed in lipid vesicles or membranes. These "magnetosomes" as they are called, have considerable potential for medical use because of their greater biocompatibility and convenient narrow and uniform shape compared to manmade versions.

Bacteria use them like tiny compasses to help them search for environments rich in oxygen.

For use in medicine, a significant advantage could be gained if the magnetic properties of magnetosomes could be controlled, for instance by chemically doping them, but until this study, that had not been demonstrated very successfully.

Staniland and colleagues showed they could dope the magnetosomes of three types of Magnetospirillum bacteria with cobalt.

The presence of cobalt in the magnetosomes increases their ability to stay magnetised when they are removed from a magnetic field. Measuring the coercive field necessary to reverse their magnetisation showed that the increase in magnetic field strength conferred by the cobalt was between 36 and 45 per cent, depending on the type of bacteria and the amount of cobalt absorbed.

Using a range of measuring techniques such as elemental analysis, X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (this looks at the effect of magnetic field on polarized light), Staniland and colleagues estimated the cobalt content of the magnetosomes to be between 0.2 and 1.4 per cent.

They concluded that their findings:

"Provide an important advance in designing biologically synthesized nanoparticles with useful highly tuned magnetic properties."

The researchers speculated that magnetosomes that can stay magnetised longer could one day be used to target and destroy cancer cells, reported BBC News.

They could be guided to the tumour using magnetic force, and once there, by reversing the magnetic field they could be heated up and kill the cells. Another application could be to use them to transport drugs to the precise site of the tumour.

Staniland told the media that:

"For nanoparticles to be used in medicine you need them to be a very uniform size and shape and bacteria are very good for that."

"You would move them with a normal magnetic field and then heat them with the opposing field," she explained in the BBC News report.

Cancer experts say nanotechnology like this is an exciting new field that could lead to new medical treatments, but the research is still very much at an early stage.

A recent US study on a small group of people found that aromatherapy oils had no physiological effect although they may improve mood for some people.

The study is the work of researchers at Ohio State University and appears in the April issue of the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.

Described by a doctor speaking on the CBS News Early Show on Tuesday as one of the few studies to take "a very scientific look at aromatherapy", the study found that the two most popular aromatherapy oils, lemon and lavender, failed to show any improvement in wound healing, immune status, blood pressure, stress hormones, or pain control.

Lemon oil did show a small effect in mood improvement, but lavender oil was even less effective than water, said the researchers who conducted three psychological tests as well as examining physiological effects.

Lead author of the study and professor of psychiatry and psychology at Ohio State University, Dr Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, and colleagues, looked for physiological evidence that the two oils went beyond increasing pleasure. Aromatherapy is a large industry that markets oils as having health benefits, but there is little scientific evidence of this.

Kiecolt-Glaser said:

"We all know that the placebo effect can have a very strong impact on a person's health but beyond that, we wanted to see if these aromatic essential oils actually improved human health in some measurable way."

Lemon and lavender are the two most used scents in aromatherapy, and recent research also selected these to study.

The researchers invited 56 healthy male and female volunteers and screened them to find out how good their sense of smell was. Some of the participants believed aromatherapy was effective while the others had no opinion one way or the other.

The participants attended three half day events where they had cotton balls with lemon oil, lavender oil or distilled water taped below their noses while they were examined using a range of physiological and psychological tests.

Their blood pressure and heart rate was monitored during the sessions, and they also gave blood samples. Ability to heal was assessed by a standard test where sticky tape is applied and then removed repeatedly on an area of skin, and reaction to pain was measured from immersing their feet in ice cold water.

The volunteers also completed three standard psychological tests to assess mood and stress at three times during each session. They were also asked to express their reaction to the experience, and their use of positive and negative words in their narrative was assessed.

Several biochemical markers were tested in the blood samples to establish changes in immune and endocrine system. These included the cytokines Interleukin-6 and Interleukin-10, and the stress hormones cortisol, norepinephrine and other catacholomines.

The results showed that while lemon oil clearly enhanced mood, lavender oil had no such effect, and neither smell made any impact on any of the measures for stress, pain control and wound healing.

The study is one of the most comprehensive pieces of research to look at aromatherapy, but the human body is "infinitely complex" said co-author Dr William Malarkey, professor of internal medicine at Ohio State University.

"If an individual patient uses these oils and feels better, there's no way we can prove it doesn't improve that person's health," he said.

"But we still failed to find any quantitative indication that these oils provide any physiological effect for people in general," added Malarkey.

Fellow co-author Dr Ronald Glaser, a professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics at Ohio State, said that the wound healing experiment measured how fast the skin repaired itself, and a lot of things have to happen in the body for that to take place:

"We measured a lot of complex physiological interactions instead of just a single marker, and still we saw no positive effect," said Glaser.

Speaking on the CBS Early Show, Dr Roshini Raj of New York University Medical Center said that the effect of lemon on mood "shouldn't be underestimated", saying it was a "pretty good thing" if just smelling something can make a person feel better. Perhaps there is a strong placebo effect, she said, where people believe aromatherapy works but there is no real physiological effect.

She suggested that perhaps some people feel less stressed when they use aromatherapy, and this helps them deal with certain medical conditions.

Raj pointed out that the study was relatively small, and therefore "you can't say aromatherapy doesn't work for everyone".

The message appears to be that while it probably won't do any harm, and maybe worth a try, don't expect aromatherapy to replace needed medications.

Mr. Ayag, what kinds of books are you in need of. I have several old math, chemistry/science books as well as some reading books. Would this be of any help?

And where should I send it? Or can they wait till July when I return? I can just bring the books then. If that isn't too late, Mr. Ayag?

Peeps, Cleveland Clinic is the #1 Heart clinic in the country...and YOU were there? your teacher really knows!

or did u take a certain test on where to be assigned?

Dong i can picture you with the green scrubs and steth in that hospital!

aguYyy!

I was one of 8 other internees, the 3rd year med students and residents basically showed us around their daily routines; ways to ask questions, taking history of patients, weighing them, BP, and just showing around. All 8 of us were admitted to the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine program; the college just wanted to show off what it offered. I enjoyed rotating, pero, we were limited mostly to foot, and ankle care. (foot doctor man nang Podiatrist). I really enjoyed observing surgery tho, 'te. I was in there with Dr. Katz in removing a gangrene ankle from a patient; its naa sila technique to remove the ankle.

One thing tho was that we were there for 12 hours on our feet, 'te. From 8 Am till 8 Pm. Most of the time I talked to the Filipina nurses, mo share sila ilang food with us, LOL.

'te it was a summer internship with the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine this Summer 2007. It was a pre-professional internship as I was admitted to the DPM program, pero I declined my decision. The program I was admitted would have made me into a Podiatric Physician, pero, I am looking towards vascular orientation, not limited to the legs and foot.

Yes, 'te. The Medical Campus is HUGE.
