The Philippines' position is a product of half a millenia of Spanish Hispanization, 50 years of American control and 4 years of brutal Japanese occupation.

The current stasis of the Philippines cannot be blamed for our inability to rise above, rather, it is a psychological impact that is universal for any colonized state. The Philippines' position is unlike other countries in the region because nations that were colonized in the the ASEAN region were for a brief period of time and the level of Imperial assimilation was limited in those countries.

For example, in Vietnam, it was placed under French control in the mid 19th century when the Vietnamese Nguyen-Le dynasty was toppled over by French forces. Vietnam retains its strong confucian culture due to the fact that the country was under French control for less than a century; that and the fact that the French did not assimilate the colony socially. There were pockets of French cultural influence, but for the most part, Vietnam was kept as a French "Oriental" possession. For means of national pride and glory. France's acquisition of Vietnam and Cambodia and Laos was a game, a competition against English imperialism and presence in India, Malaya and northern Borneo.

Dutch control of Malacca and Java (present day Indonesia) was for economic means. Indonesia provided raw natural resources that fueled the industry of the Netherlands. The Netherlands had no intention of making its Asiatic colony into a 'Dutch' state. The relationship was simply laissez faire. An example of parasitic imperialism.

The Philippines is different. Spain did not conquer the Philippines for mere economics. On the contrary, the colonization of the Philippines actually cost the Spanish government thousands of gold pesetas in order to maintain defense, economic trade of the colony. The Philippines was discovered accidentally in that the Spanish regime wanted to find a way to reach the spice islands of Malaccas and rich ports of Cathay (China).
The Spaniards did not look to take resources from the Philippines, as during their arrival, there was little to no resources in the Philippines, beside her geographic location to China. Over time, the Spaniards realized the necessity to secure the Philippines in that christian evangelization became a prime directive by the Catholic Episcopacy, particularly during the reign of Emperor Philip II. Spain wanted the Philippines and had plans to make the archipelago into a provincia of the Empire. Forced assimilation was manifested, as in the designing of towns, villages, cities under Spanish design. All towns and cities were named in Spanish, all names of persons in the country were given Spanish names to properly tax citizens, christianity was promulgated and enforced. The Spanish presence in the Philippines transformed the country completely in terms of religious activity-catholicism, governmental types-hispanicana style, economic activity-encomienda style (landed estates), the development of an oligarchy (principales, gobernadorcillos) and the landed peasantry who worked. Hundreds of Spanish friars came to the Philippines under direct order from the Spanish Episcopacy and Vatican Ecclesiasy. They built hundreds of churches, throughout the archipelago with the goal of christianizing the islands. Transformation was mandated.

This is why we have this so called 'colonial' mentality. We were taught to think in one particular way; to see ourselves not as Filipinos, but members of a greater Spanish Empire.

When a state is under a system for almost half a millenia, these effects are only natural. Think about it, we have only been independent for 60 some years. We were under the control of Spain for 400 years.

El Presidente General Emilio Aguinaldo was Filipino-Chinese.

He was said to have been very reticent. The Spanish Royal Government had deep respect for this man.
A tactical politician.

Social darwinism was championed by European Imperialists during the 17th to the 19th century.
The concept legitimized their claim on foreign territories. The Spanish, the English, Dutch, French and Germans used it eloquently.

Social Darwinism was the reason Imperialism was softly digested in their home fronts in that the governments of said imperial factions argued they would provide Christianity, urbanization, civilization, and economic prowess to the conquered peoples; and of course at the same time benefit and profit from the colony by shear volume of natural resources exported.

This is how a Kriss from Sulu and Tawi-Tawi region look like.

It is similar in design to the Indonesian and Malaysian Keris (Kriss).

However, the Sulu Kriss is much bigger, heavier.
These were the swords used by Moro warriors that used to decapitate Spanish conquistadores who trespassed into their domain back in the colonial period.

The Kriss that my Papa Titing had, which is in display in our house, was given to him by the late Sultan of Sulu. My Papa Titing was a businessman, trading and selling goods in Mindanao and in Sulu back in the 60s and 70s.

After the initiation of the Moro Wars in the early 70s, his friend, the Sultan of Sulu told him to never come back to Sulu as fears of his death from rising anti-christian sentiments in the south. As a gift of friendship, the Sultan gave my Papa Titing a traditional Sulu Kriss.

The Kriss can easily sever a man's torso in half if used properly.

Those are the radical wings of social darwinism, Kiams.

The Nazis murdered millions not because of social darwinism but because they employed a flawed raciological concept of aryan supremacy. They violated social darwinism because many of the Jews, Slavs, non-Germanic peoples they sent to the gas chambers and gallows were successful in their trade.

Even if we deny it or not, social darwinism is evident in the global society. The powerful countries have power, whereas those who are weak, lack natural resources or ability to retrieve it are left under the power of the powerful countries.

Hence we have stratification of states:

modernized states > industrializing/modernizing states > third world

El Presidente-General Emilio Aguinaldo.

I've read the Spanish colonial government's stance on this man during the brief Hispano-Filipina War of 1896-1898. The Spaniards had a dual view of Aguinaldo.

a) They hated the man for his so called "atrevimiento resistancia" in that he declared rebellion against the Spanish regime, which to the Spaniards was a "Father to Child relationship".

b) Yet the Spaniards, specifically the Governor General of the Philippines would go on to write about Aguinaldo's bravery and nationalistic patriotism in positive light in his biography. The Spanish officers both feared and adored this man.

Aguinaldo, specially in his war campaign showed strong humanitarian characteristics towards his enemies. All Spanish troops that surrendered to his forces were treated with care, given food and provision.

However Aguinaldo was intelligent to change tactics when fighting the Americans, who were known to employ a less valiant and less chivalric war policy as compared to the Spanish Infantrymen. The United States sent in their Indian-hunters to fight Agunaldo's troops, thus Aguinaldo employed a popular tactic that was once looked down upon by the Philippine Revolutionary Army and by its predecessor, the Spanish Filipino Civil Guard. Which was hit and run guerilla tactics, which was a style of warefare the officers of the former Spanish Filipino Guardia Civil noted as, "barbaric, inhumane, uncivilized"

It goes to say, desperate times calls for desperate measures. Specially during the Philippine-American War, when the Filipino forces suffered massive losses and eventually lost the war. Compared to the Hispano-Filipina War, where Filipino forces defeated most of the Spanish forces besides Manila, where the core of the Spanish Legions were based at.

The basis for these, is the lack of medical facilities in the country.

As taught in epidemiology, immunology and microbiology, the target countries of new born pathogens will be the 3rd world countries with limited medical facilities, lack of funding to provide immediate antivirals and proper preventative procedures.

1) Lack of hygiene is a causative factor: Major cases of infection and proliferation of communicable diseases (gram negative and gram positive types) in countries such as: PRC, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Egypt, Sub-saharan countries etc.
2) Booming and unchecked population: Increase of population leads to a strain in medical workers on OB/GYN cases and not enough on immunological and epidemiological fields. A population boom will always beget a spread of infectious diseases. New borns will be susceptible to pathogens due to a lack of immuno-resistance. Natural pathway. With pathogens infecting new hosts, they will go through mutanogensis and as a result of protein mutation and synthesis changes, will therefore develop immunity to man-made antibacterials and anti-virals.

This is why infectious diseases continues to plague poor third world countries. Diseases come about as a natural pathway to limit human population, a check to our assymetrical population growth, if you will. But since humankind is unlike other animals in that we develop medical resistance to pathogenic effects; these diseases alterate/deviate from its natural path. Viruses, are beautiful in how God made them that they are able to respond to changes in internal homeostasis and alterate their protein codets if there are environmental cues that demand them to evolve. Per se an increase in pH environment, increases acidity, a proliferation of a membrane destructive enzymes. As a result, the viruses and bacteria will evolve, mutating itself to develop stronger pH resistant membrane walls, will develop proteins that inhibits the ability of cytotoxic T cells to locate and kill bacteria, will create proteins that will dissable the ability of the lympathic and leukocytic cells.

Thereby, it actually proves evolutionary processes in that viruses respond to environmental cues, they have developed a mechanism to evade and fight off man's medical cures.

It is a dual processes, in a way, which is beautiful.

1) Man invents cures, preventative methods, anti virals, anti bacterials to ruin the internal villi of viruses and bacterias
2) Said viruses and bacterias develop their own defense mechanism against man-made protein denaturations

A Ying  and Yang interaciton, so to say. Beautiful. Rather beautiful.

In this case, prevention is always the best cure.
Prevention also relies on economic promise. Where there is money, there is health. Without it, the antithesis manifests.

If it is any consolation at all, as you think of your dear Papa. I know that he himself had emotions and feelings that he probably never told you. You are his son, the feelings he had when he carried you in his arms when you were a baby. Caring for you when you were crying at night or laughing with you. When you were in school, I am sure your Papa had his own thoughts and worries for you, his son.

Quote from: bulak on April 09, 2008, 05:18:33 PM

Standing at 23 inches tall â€" and weighing in at just 11 pounds â€" Jyoti Amge is no ordinary teenager. In fact, the 14-year-old is the world's smallest girl, according to the Indian Book of Records.

Amge has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, which affects an estimated one out of every 25,000 births and occurs in all races.

But, her tiny size hasn't hampered her spirit one bit.

The teenager told Britain's Sunday Mirror that she enjoys the celebrity status her height has brought her.

"I am proud of being small. I love the attention I get," she told the paper.

"I'm just the same as other people. I eat like you, dream like you. I don't feel any different."

According to the Mayo Clinic, about 70 percent of all people with dwarfism have achondroplasia, which causes disproportionately short stature.

This disorder usually results in:

â€" An adult height of approximately 4 feet

â€" An average-size trunk

â€" Short arms and legs, with particularly short upper arms and legs

â€" Short fingers, often with a wide separation between the middle and ring fingers

â€" Limited mobility at the elbows

â€" A disproportionately large head, with a prominent forehead and flattened bridge of the nose

Despite all this, Amge is just like any other teenager.

She loves listening to music, watching DVDs and attends the local high school in her town of Nagpur, India, where she sits side-by-side with classmates of her own age.

"When Jyoti was born, she seemed quite normal," her mother, Ranjana, 45, told the Sunday Mirror.

"We came to know about her disorder when she was five. We consulted a specialist and he said she will be this size all of her life. Jyoti is small, yet cute, and we love her very much."

As for the future â€" it’s wide open.

For the most part, people with this form of dwarfism have normal intelligence and lifespan â€" and this very ambitious teenager intends to take full advantage of all her talents.

"I would like to work in a big city like Mumbai, act in films and travel to London and America," she said.

She has even recently recorded an album with her favorite Indian pop star, Mike Singh, according to the report.

with her family

This is a classic case of primordial dwarfism.

Its due to a mutanogenisis of the RNA polymerase II factors, which in turn mutate the ability of transcription in the DNA of the humanoid chromosome.

The mutation within the polymerase complex is due to a protein-to-protein inhibition or denaturation. Such a small genetic mistake, ushers in a trillion fold mutanogensis in the malformation of organismal growth.
What happens is that the RNA polymerase' structure is changed in that when the Tata-binding protein binds to the Tata Box in the promoter cortex, it is unable to allow the binding of the GCbox's SP1 protein subunit, which is responsible for binding with the general transcriptional factor 110, which therein is attached to the TBP(tata-binding rotein) through the TAFII250 transcription factor. Without this proper binding sequence, there is no manifestation of the pre-initiator complex, if there is no pre-initiator complex, there is no elongation, thus there is no transcription.

Any inhibition or lack of transcription of DNA transcript will mutate and alter the specific DNA sequence, which leads to phenotypic and genotypic mutation and abnormalities.

In this case, there was a lack of transcription of a genomic sequence that was responsible for the proper function of the AER (apical ectodermal ridge) within the limb, which is responsible for proper limb formation.

This is actually a perfect case study in a molecular biology or cellular biology course.

What I truly like about this poem, Mike, is that its universal.

The words that resounds in our hearts, but are never truly said. Feelings that usher in our minds, but are never expressed in words or by action. They remain a mere conundrum of the inner soul.

The tragedy, to me, is that when death claims the individual, all of our unsaid feelings, yearnings, and passions are wiped away. Never to be told. The intended recipient never receives news of delectation, acridity, despondency. Perhaps it is for the better, perhaps not.

Evening Solace
by Charlotte Bronte

The human heart has hidden treasures,
In secret kept, in silence sealed;--
The thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures,
Whose charms were broken if revealed.
And days may pass in gay confusion,
And nights in rosy riot fly,
While, lost in Fame's or Wealth's illusion,
The memory of the Past may die.

But there are hours of lonely musing,
Such as in evening silence come,
When, soft as birds their pinions closing,
The heart's best feelings gather home.
Then in our souls there seems to languish
A tender grief that is not woe;
And thoughts that once wrung groans of anguish
Now cause but some mild tears to flow.

And feelings, once as strong as passions,
Float softly back--a faded dream;

Our own sharp griefs and wild sensations,
The tale of others' sufferings seem.
Oh! when the heart is freshly bleeding,
How longs it for that time to be,
When, through the mist of years receding,
Its woes but live in reverie!

And it can dwell on moonlight glimmer,
On evening shade and loneliness;
And, while the sky grows dim and dimmer,
Feel no untold and strange distress--
Only a deeper impulse given
By lonely hour and darkened room,
To solemn thoughts that soar to heaven
Seeking a life and world to come.

Woe! To the fact that man can only travel in one direction, which is in the direction of the future and nay to yesteryears.

Though our feelings come and go, rise and subside. This reminds me that it is better to say something and do something and accept the consequence, lest we regret in not saying anything.

The power of human emotions; can even humble the proudest of men. Bringing even giants to tears.

Luuy kaayo ang baby. I'm just wondering if the compacted facial growth will somehow affect neurological growth. I wonder if there will be an impairment of proper growth and closure of the frontal, parietal and occipital bones. Due the baby's dual facial feature, no doubt there must be an alteration in design to her coronal and saggital suture. These areas, if improperly closed or distorted can impair the growth of the primary somatic cortex located near the sagittal suture, the impairment of not only the pre-motor cortex, but the pre-frontal cortex and with that, inhibit or decrease the ability of growth in the broca's area. Ang result ani would be decreased mental ability. Ang importante kaayo is proper formation of an infant's neural system.

Pero one can only hope the best for this little baby. Luuy kaayo intawn.

When concerned with safety issues related to their care, patients prefer to challenge nurses rather than doctors, according to a study released on April 3, 2008 in the BMJ Specialty Journal Quality and Safety in Health Care. Additionally, women were found to be more assertive in this respect than men.

These findings were determined through a validated survey which inquired about the factors that influenced patients' willingness to ask healthcare professionals questions related to the safety of treatment methods. All 80 respondents had undergone surgery at an inner London teaching hospital, and scored their willingness to ask different professionals different questions. The scale given was as low as 1, indicating they would "definitely not be willing," and as high as 4, stating that they "definitely would be willing." From these data, an average score was calculated and used to search for any statistically significant factors.

Patients were far more likely to pose factual questions to all healthcare professionals, auch as inquiring about the length of their hospital stay. They were less likely to ask questions that could be perceived as challenges to the professional's clinical abilities, such as whether the healthcare professional had washed his or her hands.

They were more willing to direct factual questions to doctors than to nurses (a score of 3.41 versus a score of 3.09.) They were more willing to ask nurses questions that challenged their clinical abilities than doctors (a score of 2.58 compared with 2.39.) However, when doctors pointedly encouraged patients to ask more difficult questions, they were overall more willing to quiz both sets on both safety and quality issues.

The patients who were least willing to quiz any professionals about safety and quality issues were generally male, had lower levels of education, and were unemployed. Women were the most willing to ask questions in general.

Approximately one in ten patients will experience an error in his or her medical treatment while in a hospital. However, it is possible that if patients are more willing to ask their caretakers challenging questions, this rate could fall, according to the authors. They explain: "Patients need to feel they can ask questions that may be perceived as challenging, without causing offence to those involved in their healthcare treatment."

Hundreds Of AMA Medical Students And Residents Lobby Congress On Medical Student Debt, Uninsured And Medicare

Nearly 300 medical student, resident and fellow members of the American Medical Association (AMA) from across the nation are storming Capitol Hill urging Congress to protect access to care for America's patients. Throughout the day, the students, residents and fellows will visit House and Senate offices asking Congress to alleviate medical student debt, adopt effective reforms to cover the uninsured and stop Medicare payment cuts to preserve seniors' access to health care.

"Congress has the power to help ensure that there are enough physicians for our aging population by easing the enormous debt burden medical students shoulder after medical school," said AMA Board Member Chris DeRienzo, fourth year medical student at Duke University. "Today, the average medical student graduates from medical school with a debt of nearly $140,000. This high debt burden often plays a role in students' career choices, forcing many away from primary care specialties or from practicing in underserved areas."

"We're asking Congress to permanently reinstate the medical student loan deferment program, known as the '20/220 pathway,' so that residents can defer payment on their loans for up to three years during residency training based on economic hardship," said AMA Board Member Samantha Rosman, M.D. "We're also urging them to expand this program to ease the debt burden for even more residents and fellows. And we're calling on Congress to reauthorize the higher education act, which contains important provisions for medical students who rely on federal loans. We must find a way to ease some of this debt burden so that we increase the number of minority physicians and increase the ability of physicians to go on to serve the underserved."

"The AMA is committed to working with Congress on a solution to provide access to affordable health care for the 47 million Americans who are uninsured," said Mr. DeRienzo. "Physicians see firsthand the devastating effect of living without health insurance. Uninsured patients live sicker and die younger because they often put off medical care until their health problems have reached crisis proportions."

"Covering the uninsured is a top priority for the AMA, and we are sharing our proposal with Congress," said Dr. Rosman. "Under the AMA proposal, those who need it most receive financial assistance to purchase health insurance so that everyone can access the medical care they need to stay healthy and receive care when they are sick. It gives individuals choices so they can select the coverage that works best for themselves and their families, and it promotes fair rules that include protections for high-risk patients. We are confident that now is the time Congress and our next president can reform our health care system to provide coverage and access to care for all Americans."

"The AMA's medical student, resident and fellow members are urging Congress to protect seniors' access to health care by stopping Medicare payment cuts that will start this July," said Dr. Rosman. "Sixty percent of physicians say the cuts will force them to limit the number of new Medicare patients they can treat. With the baby boomers just a few years away from aging into Medicare, Congress needs to stop the cuts now to preserve access to medical care for our aging population."

AMA medical students, residents and fellows are in Washington, DC as part of the AMA's National Advocacy Conference, which brings nearly 1,000 physicians, residents and medical students to Washington to advocate for health care reforms for patients and the physicians who care for them. To voice concern over upcoming Medicare payment cuts, the AMA also will host a Medicare rally - a house call on Congress - on Capitol Hill Tuesday to call for Congressional action to stop the cuts and protect seniors' access to care.

About the American Medical Association

The American Medical Association helps doctors help patients by uniting physicians nationwide to work on the most important professional and public health issues. Working together, the AMA's quarter of a million physician and medical student members are playing an active role in shaping the future of medicine.

Dong, thanks for sharing your spiritual experiences with me.  I was so moved to tears by your story and your honesty of how you felt about going to church with your family when you were younger.  Blessed are you who believed in Him and accepted Him in your heart.

Dong, question.  After you were re-born in that day at the Ford Chapel, did you ever felt empty since then?  You know, the feeling that when you wanted to talk to Him and you couldn't feel His presence.  Back then in the Philippines when I was so busy at work, I had my work as my life.  Going to church every Sunday (at the last mass of the day )was just a force of habit.  There was one day I felt so tired and exhausted and alone.  Yes, very alone. Overwhelmingly alone.  I called for Him but I didn't feel His presence.  I always believe that God resides in our heart so I sort of knocked my heart to no avail.  I panicked.  I cried my heart out.  I fell asleep.  The next morning, I felt light and there I felt again God presence in my being.

Ate Ging,

Do you ever get a feeling of sadness and emptiness when you do not go to church? Or when you forget to attend a mass?

I'm feeling it right now as I have not attended mass in over a week now.

From the same source:

Most Catholics marry, and all Catholics are taught to venerate marriage as a holy institutionâ€"a sacrament, an action of God upon our souls; one of the holiest things we encounter in this life.

In fact, it is precisely the holiness of marriage that makes celibacy precious; for only what is good and holy in itself can be given up for God as a sacrifice. Just as fasting presupposes the goodness of food, celibacy presupposes the goodness of marriage. To despise celibacy, therefore, is to undermine marriage itselfâ€"as the early Fathers pointed out.

Celibacy is also a life-affirming institution. In the Old Testament, where celibacy was almost unknown, the childless were often despised by others and themselves; only through children, it was felt, did one acquire value. By renouncing marriage, the celibate affirms the intrinsic value of each human life in itself, regardless of offspring.

Finally, celibacy is an eschatological sign to the Church, a living-out in the present of the universal celibacy of heaven: "For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven" (Matt. 22:30).

The following is the Catholic Church's Stance on Celibacy
Taken from the following web site:
http://www.catholic.com/library/Celibacy_and_the_Priesthood.asp

The Stance:

Another Fundamentalist argument, related to the last, is that marriage is mandatory for Church leaders. For Paul says a bishop must be "the husband of one wife," and "must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way; for if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for God’s Church?" (1 Tim. 3:2, 4â€"5). This means, they argue, that only a man who has demonstrably looked after a family is fit to care for God’s Church; an unmarried man, it is implied, is somehow untried or unproven.

This interpretation leads to obvious absurdities. For one, if "the husband of one wife" really meant that a bishop had to be married, then by the same logic "keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way" would mean that he had to have children. Childless husbands (or even fathers of only one child, since Paul uses the plural) would not qualify.

In fact, following this style of interpretation to its final absurdity, since Paul speaks of bishops meeting these requirements (not of their having met them, or of candidates for bishop meeting them), it would even follow that an ordained bishop whose wife or children died would become unqualified for ministry! Clearly such excessive literalism must be rejected.

The theory that Church leaders must be married also contradicts the obvious fact that Paul himself, an eminent Church leader, was single and happy to be so. Unless Paul was a hypocrite, he could hardly have imposed a requirement on bishops which he did not himself meet. Consider, too, the implications regarding Paul’s positive attitude toward celibacy in 1 Corinthians 7: the married have worldly anxieties and divided interests, yet only they are qualified to be bishops; whereas the unmarried have single-minded devotion to the Lord, yet are barred from ministry!

The suggestion that the unmarried man is somehow untried or unproven is equally absurd. Each vocation has its own proper challenges: the celibate man must exercise "self-control" (1 Cor. 7:9); the husband must love and care for his wife selflessly (Eph. 5:25); and the father must raise his children well (1 Tim. 3:4). Every man must meet Paul’s standard of "managing his household well," even if his "household" is only himself. If anything, the chaste celibate man meets a higher standard than the respectable family man.

Clearly, the point of Paul’s requirement that a bishop be "the husband of one wife" is not that he must have one wife, but that he must have only one wife. Expressed conversely, Paul is saying that a bishop must not have unruly or undisciplined children (not that he must have children who are well behaved), and must not be married more than once (not that he must be married).

The truth is, it is precisely those who are uniquely "concerned about the affairs of the Lord" (1 Cor. 7:32), those to whom it has been given to "renounce marriage for the sake of the kingdom" (Matt. 19:12), who are ideally suited to follow in the footsteps of those who have "left everything" to follow Christ (cf. Matt. 19:27)â€"the calling of the clergy and consecrated religious (i.e., monks and nuns).

Thus Paul warned Timothy, a young bishop, that those called to be "soldiers" of Christ must avoid "civilian pursuits": "Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him" (2 Tim. 2:3â€"4). In light of Paul’s remarks in 1 Corinthians 7 about the advantages of celibacy, marriage and family clearly stand out in connection with these "civilian pursuits."

An example of ministerial celibacy can also be seen in the Old Testament. The prophet Jeremiah, as part of his prophetic ministry, was forbidden to take a wife: "The word of the Lord came to me: ‘You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place’" (Jer. 16:1â€"2). Of course, this is different from Catholic priestly celibacy, which is not divinely ordained; yet the divine precedent still supports the legitimacy of the human institution.

On the contrary, Matthew is referred multiple times by biblical scholars, particularly in the Catholic Church.

Matthew 19:9-12:

Jesus is recorded as promoting celibacy, but only for those who can handle it. It was a teaching added onto a statement about divorce:

"And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery."

"His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry."

"But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given."

"For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it."

Jesus identifies three groups of males for whom the unmarried state is better:
1) Those men without functioning genitals capable of impregnating a woman.
2)Those who have been intentionally castrated
3)Those who voluntarily abstain from sexual relations with women.

Charles Laymon's "The Interpreter's one-volume commentary on the Bible" suggest that at least the third option was added by later writers and scribes and is not something that Jesus advocated. Laymon comments that the words:

"Eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven have [occasionally] been taken literally. This was true in the case of Origen, the learned biblical scholar of the church in Alexandria in the early 3rd century. But the saying likely reflects the growing tendency of the church, even by the end of the first century, to regard abstinence from the marriage relationship as a sign of holiness. The passage tells us about the early church; it reveals nothing about the attitude of Jesus towards marriage."

-

Paul writes to the Christian church at Corinth about marriage. That group was composed of former Jews Roman Pagans and Greek Pagans -- each with their own marriage customs. He suggests that celibacy is a preferred choice.

1 Corinthians 7:1-2: ...  It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

1 Corinthians 7:7-9: For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.

But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

He does not promote the unmarried, sexually inactive state as a general principle, but only to those to whom God has given the gift of celibacy.

-

Revelation 14:1-5:

This passage discusses 144,000 singers during the end times, who seem to be given an preferential status because they are virgins who were "undefiled with women." They follow Jesus wherever he goes. "And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God." The implication is that sexual activity is polluting.

Some theologians have suggested that the 144,000 were free of spiritual fornication -- e.g. accepting some heresy or practicing some form of idolatry. However, this seems like a stretch, because verse four specifically mentions being undefiled with women. These verses probably reflect the growing anti-sexual movement in the early Church near the end of the 1st century CE when the Book of Revelation was probably written.

The Bible teaches that most people are happiest in a loving, supportive, committed marriage relationship. However, if a person can handle celibacy, then is is an alternative and perhaps a preferred option.

The devil distorts the faith of many. He plays with the minds of men and mutates them to do evil instead of good. Destruction instead of peace, hate instead of love.

For the Lord God is Love.
Faith, Truth and Love. But of the three, Love is greatest.

It is in the blind hatred of terrorists that they perverse the teachings of the Q'uran.
To suit the teachings to their own interpretations.
To suit their own agenda, not that of the Lord.

And this is not only seen for muslims. There are extremist Christians out there who preach hate.
For example is the Westboro Baptist Church. It teaches the damnation of all besides themselves. In their twisted and perverted interpretation of scripture, they forget New Testament but utilize references from the Old Testament in reference to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. They hate American soldiers, orthodox, catholics, orthodox protestants, jews, etc.

This is where I am against this sense of loose-interpretation of scripture.
They have forgotten the true meanings of scripture, that is why it is important not to forget Christian tradition with scripture. The true meaning must never be cast aside.

Of course, 'te. There are varying stances on the said matter, theologians have been arguing each other on it for centuries now. It is one of the reasons why there are differences between Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
1) Both churches preach with conservative reference of tradition towards scripture.
2) Both churches differ in a) the concept of the infallibility of the Pope (though the Orthodox Church regards him as the 'first of many bishops' and b) the concept of celibacy. Catholic Church wants its priests to remain celibate and Orthodox allows its priests to marry.

The same can even be said for Protestant churches, who allow their ministers to marry.

So yes I agree with you that these references are loose and open to interpretation. Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant.

Dong, I'm not so much interested on the controversies surrounding the orthodox and catholic churches..whatever their disputes are, that's theirs to settle..in the final analysis, there really is no biblical foundation for priestly celibacy. This sanction has been interpreted by the Church and was part of the century-old unfolding of Christian tradition. But bluntly put, Jesus never commanded his disciples to be celibate.

Still I rest my case that the sanction to priestly celibacy was rooted not so much on biblical mandate but on church tradition, teachings of the church fathers and the ever enriching daily experience of the Christian community..what started out as an experience gradually became more pronounced and articulated into some form of a sanction.

This is where I differ with you, 'te.
I respect your views on it and interpretation.

But the Book of Matthew clearly even tells us in Matthew 19: 10-12
"Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can."

He indeed is telling us that celibacy is indeed better than being married, when teaching the truth. The term eunuch is used in that one castrates himself, telling us that in order to preach the truth, one must fully alienate himself from the sensuality of life. To fight temptation. There is no greater excerpt that this that says "and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven."

For the Kingdom of Heaven. And it is the Catholic Church's position to exalt that Kingdom. Through the actions and hands of priests who owe no allegiance to any woman, man or child. But to Christ Alone.

This is why celibacy was indeed preferred.

St. Paul was keen and cautious to use words that downgraded marriage. As marriage in itself is holy, however, for the civilian life. Remember he even said this was his opinion, but he specifically said that his opinion was, "I give my opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy." (1 Cor 7:24-35). This means that the Lord of Host spoke through him. And that the Lord agreed with him as there was a sense of trust-and acceptance. St. Paul tells us that there is nothing wrong with marriage, however, if you are not married stay unmarried in preaching.

The church sees this as direct and solid stance on celibacy. And as a Catholic, I trust in the teachings of the Church.

They commit haram by killing. God does not condone killing, only in defense of your faith. But these extremists do not defend, they are searching to kill, to instill wrath on others not because of faith.

Allah did not tell them to bomb jewish schools, Allah did not tell them to bomb and snipe American women. Allah did not tell them hijack a civilian plane and crash them into the twin towers and kill 3,000 innocents.

These people sought to hurt and attack. They did not defend, but offend.

What makes these men dangerous is that they use the face of religion for a political agenda.

Exactly, Kiams.

I asked Hussein about this as well. These terrorists are using the religion of Islam, which is peaceful in its purest form, for a political agenda. There are terrorists that kill Sunni pilgrims and Shii pilgrims in order to have war with each other. They twist and distort the words of the Q'uran, which is a part of the Truth.

I have read the Q'uran, Kiams. Theirs is almost the repitition of the Holy Bible. All of the prophets in the Bible they recognize and call as prophets, the teachings of the Talmud, the old testament and the new testament is included in the Q'uran.

The only difference is that they don't recognize Christ Jesus (Issa) as  the Son of God, but view him as a Great Prophet. In the Judgement Day in the Q'uran, the prophet Issa (Jesus) will come and judge the living and the dead. Just the way as our Holy Bible indicates in Revelations.

There is a specific verse in the Q'uran that refers to Christians and Jews as "People of the Book" and Mohammad himself tells his followers to treat the People of the Book with respect and care. Do not kill or plague them.

It is a shame, that there are extremists that ruin the true teachings. The same way as there are extremist Christians who distort the meaning of the Bible for their own selfish and destructive means.

You are right, Kiams. Those who kill in the name of God do not know God.

why is that? it makes me sad.,

Probably because Islam provides a better answer for them.

For me, I believe that Christianity, Judaism and Islam are brothers in Faith. We are all abrahamic people, all come from the same tree. Who is Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim for the Muslims). We christians and jews differ in that we come from Isaac and the Muslims come from the line of Ishmael (though both were children of Abraham.)

And again he said: I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude.  And again: Behold, said he, thou art with child, and thou shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Ismael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction. He shall be a wild man: his hand will be against all men, and all men's hands against him: and he shall pitch his tents over against all his brethren. And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her: Thou the God who hast seen me. For she said: Verily, here have I seen the hinder parts of him that seeth me.
-Genesis Chapter 17-

And as for Ismael I have also heard thee. Behold, I will bless him, and increase, and multiply him exceedingly: he shall beget twelve chiefs, and I will make him a great nation.  But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sara shall bring forth to thee at this time in the next year.  And when he had left off speaking with him, God went up from Abraham.
-Genesis Chapter 17-

As we see, Ismael and Isaac were both blessed by the Lord, though the Lord made the covenant with Abraham through Isaac. Judaism traces itself to Isaac and Christianity traces itself to its Jewish roots. Whereas Islam traces its roots (Mohammad in the Q'uran claims to be the descendant of Ismael) to Ismael.

That is true, 'te, these references from verses in the Book of Corinthians and Book of Matthew provide as a guide to the practices of the Catholic Church in Priestly celibacy. This has been much discussed by theologians and when it comes down to it, there is strong understanding in the power of the calling to the priesthood.

We all know the temptations of the flesh is undeniable, there have been instances of priests and even sisters who have fallen to those temptations. And as what blessed St. Paul tells us, the path of priesthood and to holy orders within the Holy Church is not an easy path nor is it meant for everyone.

Many are called, but few are able to answer His callings. He tells us that if you are married, stay married and do what you can in your married life to glorify the Lord. However, if you are not married and if there is within you a calling to minister to the flock, then not marrying is another option. St. Paul tells gives us his own interpretation, yet his interpretations are influenced by the Holy Spirit. The implications of this is to prevent conflict of interests. He mentions this in "But the married man is anxious about the affairs of the world, how to please hi wife, and his interests are divided." whereas those who are unmarried will be "anxious about the affairs of the Lord, so that they may be holy in the body and spirit." (1 Corinthians 7)

There are practical reasons why the Catholic Church follows celibacy, one for spiritual reasons, second for practical reasons. Priests, upon their ordination into the Shepardry of the flock, will be rotated and moved around through his diocese until the end. It is hard to raise a family, additionally, there are thousands of priests that preach to the millions of catholics. The church would not be able to support all the priests and their dependents, if marriage was allowed.

In the end, Hazel, I think this all stems back to one's choice in joining priestly holy orders. To me, priesthood is total sacrifice to the Lord and his ministry to His flock. Many are tempted and many are able to fight off temptations. That is why there are cases of sexual relations by priests. It is unnatural, so to say, for priestly celibacy, but the Church regards the priesthood as not a 'natural' order, but that of the christian spiritual. Which in its purest form, transcends the physical and the natural.

They preach the Christian Truth. Their calling is not by money, not by pride, not by family ties.

Catholic seminarians and priests know what they are doing. The deep burning fire in their hearts and Love of Christ, and the Sacrifice of Christ, inspires them to be like Christ. Who among us men can willfully join a Holy Order that would doom one's progeny? I tell you, I cannot! But these men, ordain themselves into holy orders in their young age through the touching of the Holy Spirit. That they are willing to give up the chances of ever becoming a father to their own children; a grandfather. To ever marry a woman and love the flesh.

For me, these men who go into the priesthood with true motives and are able to fight off the natural temptations of the devil of the flesh, then I say Blessed, Blessed are they! For Truly they are called into the Royal Priesthood by the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

And they have continued a tradition that stems back to our Church Fathers. Not by decades, not by years. But by millenias. For 2 thousand years they have preached the truth, and the truth has coveted 1.5 billion Catholics in the world.

If it was not the truth, then the success of the Holy Church would not have been possible.

Matthew 19:10-12
...his disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry." But he said to them, "Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can."

1 Cor 7:24-35
...In whatever condition you were called, brothers and sisters, there remain with God. Now concerning virgins, I have no command of the Lord, but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy. I think that, in view of the impending crisis, it is well for you to remain as you are. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife... Yet those who marry will experience distress in this life, and I would spare you that. I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none,  but the married man is anxious about the affairs of the world, how to please his wife,  and his interests are divided. And the unmarried woman and the virgin are anxious about the affairs of the Lord, so that they may be holy in body and spirit; but the married woman is anxious about the affairs of the world, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to put any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and unhindered devotion to the Lord.

Are there any biblical foundations that priests should not be married or should be celibate?

The Church Fathers of the first four centuries consistently spoke against the married priesthood. (Eusibius, Augustine, Tertullian, Origen, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Jerome etc..) St. Epiphanius speaks of the accepted ecclesiastical rule of the priesthood (kanona tes ierosynes) as something established by the Apostles. (Haer., xlviii, 9) "Holy Church", he says, "respects the dignity of the priesthood to such a point that she does not admit to the diaconate, the priesthood, or the episcopate, nor even to the subdiaconate, anyone still living in marriage and begetting children." (Haer., lix, 4).

The writings of the Church fathers show that, in the early Church, married priests were not the accepted norm in the main centres of Alexandria, Antioch and Rome. They considered it a "problem" that existed in the outlying regions. By the 3rd century there were almost no married priests and several councils put the issue to rest until around the 9th century when many bishops and priests took wives and had children. The state of the priesthood fell to an all time low.  A huge problem emerged with priests "willing" Church property to their families. Up to that point, the principle of celibacy was never completely surrendered in the official enactments of the Church. In 1123, celibacy was made official. Although, throughout history there have been scattered instances of abuses of the Canon Law, the Roman Catholic Church has consistently stuck to this position on celibate priests.

There was much theology around the concept of a priest being the "bride of Christ" (Jn 3:29, Rev 18:23, 19:7, 21:9, 21:17. This was considered in the Church's decision. Scripture fairly consistently awards celibacy a higher spiritual calling than marriage.

it is well for them to remain unmarried as I am...it is well for you to remain as you are...do not seek a wife...he who refrains from marriage will do better(I Cor., 7-8 and 32-38)

Paul says that celibacy provides "unhindered devotion to the Lord. " (1 cor 7:35) Jesus tells us "it is better not to marry...let anyone accept this who can." (Mat 19:10-12)

Hahaha, you know I really never studied why we did it, it was just what we did. When we were junior varsity players, the varsity players would do it to us so when it was our turn to be varsity, we did the same to the jv players. Hazing mentality of football players.

All for fun. Nothing serious in it.

Prescilla,

Yea. Now that I come to think about it I guess she was being truthful, it wasn't her fault. It's just my own stance on the matter, you know? I mean, don't get me wrong she was a beautiful individual in terms of manners, conversation; inside and out. Probably its just that I expect too much some times; and when I found out that she had a bf, I just felt odd. I felt guilty dating another man's gf, so there was like a sense of guilt on my part. You know the feeling when your stomach clinches? Thats how I felt when I found out.

To this day we're still friends, but nothing more than that.

1. No I never kissed a woman under the influence of alcohol; I did kiss a woman who was under the influence of 'music' lol. Butterfly kisses, indeed.

A kiss is sensual, and titillates the skin.

I don't know how anyone can bring themselves to kill their own children. Disgusting ang tawo that does something like that, how can they silence an innocent being that was given the breath of life by God? How can they kill their own babies, who are fighting to breath and suckle milk for the first time in their life?

I do not understand at all.

Every child that comes to this world is a blessing from High.
It is the gift of life. The ability to make and conceive life, it is the greatest gift of all.

May the Lord accept the souls of all the babies that are denied the right to live.

Are there any statistical reports of said crimes in Japan, Mr. Benne?

I've read that suicide is a rising problem in Japan. Particularly in the youth.
#46379
Ate Ging,

I really feel so bad for Ate Margie's kids. My chest pounds reading about this uy, kai bata pa man ilang mom. Please give my condolences to her husband and her kids. Okay?

I really, really, am so sorry for your family's loss.

May you guys stay strong in such times.
#46380
This is disgusting.

It's unnatural.

#46381
This is common. When I was still in high school, there was a case in which a pregnant teen had a baby in the bathroom and wrapped it in a plastic bag and threw it in the trash can.

The baby's lifeless body was found by janitorial workers the next day.

I don't understand why people would do this. They can drop their babies in a police station, where they uphold a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. There are thousands of American couples that are waiting to adopt a baby.  Innocent intawn man ang baby.

It breaks my heart to read stories like this.
#46382
Mr. Benne,

I am glad that your kids are safe and were not close to such an incident. It's quite disheartening to hear that even in Japan such crimes are sporadic. Cutting throats and pushing individuals to an oncoming train? Is this typical in Japan?

Btw, its great to read your posts again, sir.

One thing I noticed about women is that they play mind games.

They say things that don't make sense at all, and they expect us men to make a decision according to their mind games. Pero you know, the chase is very fun.

lol

Climbing to the top of the mountain is a rather exhilarating feeling; the view from the top is very  very nice

1. Paradise Lost by John Milton

2. To mortal men, he with his horrid crew
Lay vanquisht, rowling in the fiery Gulfe
Confounded though immortal: But his doom
Reserv'd him to more wrath; for now the thought
Both of lost happiness and lasting pain
Torments him; round he throws his baleful eyes
That witness'd huge affliction and dismay
Mixt with obdurate pride and stedfast hate:
At once as far as Angels kenn he views
The dismal Situation waste and wilde,
A Dungeon horrible, on all sides round
As one great Furnace flam'd, yet from those flames
No light, but rather darkness visible
Serv'd onely to discover sights of woe,
Regions of sorrow, doleful shades, where peace
And rest can never dwell, hope never comes
That comes to all; but torture without end
Still urges, and a fiery Deluge, fed
With ever-burning Sulphur unconsum'd:
Such place Eternal Justice had prepar'd

3. This text places a parallel between the judgment of God to cast out Man from Paradise as well as Lucifer and his legions out of heaven after their failed attempt to usurp the throne of God. In what Lucifer declared to his followers, "I will raise my throne above the stars of God." The legions were cast out of heaven and this particular excerpt describes their torment, their eternal fate and those that follow them. There is strong symbolism in their anguish, as they linger in pain, their hatred increases, instead of humbling themselves after their defeat, they refuse to accept the fact of their fate. Milton, indirectly describes their fate as , "stubbornly inivetible." This particular excerpt illustrates the power and magnificence of God. That he was able to renounce and humble even the greatest of his creations, he explains it perfectly, "Confounded though immortal", the situation Lucifer and his fallen angels were in.

They deny their own fate. In their pride, they still believe they can usurp the throne, that they can still ruin the plans of the Almighty. Alas, but they are wrong. And it is their burning hatred of the Almighty and all of his creations that prevents them from seeing the Truth.

That their existence is but limited, that even immortal Angels, great and small will be punished and judged according to their crimes.

In the End of Times.

lol, the football team that I was part of in high school had very odd practices.

For one example, whenever we had showers, it was customary for players to slap each other's asses. Odd but true.

I personally didn't like being slapped kai sakit. So I used to shower away from everyone.

I am so sorry for the loss of your family member, Ate Ging. I'll offer a prayer for her tonight, ha?
I offer my condolences to your entire family. God Bless your family who are in mourning.

Take it easy, okay?

Margie was beautiful in life, and I am sure she was a faithful wife, and a loving mother to her children. The Lord surely must have welcomed her into His Kingdom. To join your family members who have gone before us in their eternal sleep.
