"o captain, my captain
give me five centavos."

family lore says this was how my older sister earned her keep as a 4-year-old.  she used to recite this to the chief of police, a captain, who would then readily give her five centavos.

Last week, Senator Zubiri filed Senate Bill No. 2383 seeking to revive death penalty as it would help deter the commission of heinous crimes in the country.

“Let us restore the death penalty for heinous crimes. I always say, if you do the crime, you do the time. Now I say, if you do a heinous crime, then you can say goodbye to your time," the lawmaker said.

uh, would that the lawmaker retain his braggadocio should it happen (heaven forbid!) that it's his own son who commits a heinous crime.

i am against capital punishment.  yes, it's biblical in the sense that it existed biblically and historically.   but must we also quote the bible in defense of polygamy or of slavery, because these are biblical?

may i share this excerpt on the death penalty from somewhere:

Albert Pierrepoint, the British hangman who resigned in 1956, said in his biography that he functioned on behalf of the State for what he thought “…was the most humane and the most dignified method of meting out death to a delinquent--- however justified or unjustified the allotment of death may be--- and on behalf of humanity I trained other nations to adopt the British system of execution.”

His experience, he said, left him a bitter aftertaste.  He concluded thus, "…that I do not now believe that any one of the hundreds of executions I carried out has in any way acted as a deterrent against future murder.  Capital punishment, in my view, achieved nothing except revenge."

All legal systems are not too perfect as to be airtight and beyond loopholes.  Where there is capital punishment, so can there be a possible miscarriage of justice with appalling results since death is irreversible.  Another result is far from death penalty’s desired deterrent effect--- it creates martyrs as public sympathy may arise, as in the case of political prosecutions.  But nothing is more compelling against the death penalty as the possibility that the person executed has committed no crime.

going back to the bible (with apologies, as i'm no expert here), jesus christ himself was meted with the capital punishment at the time, which we all know as the crucifixion.  was it justified?

OT:  a quote befits this thread, but inspired by cujo's excerpt from edna st. vincent millay's "Passer Mortuus Est", may i share one of my all-time favorite love poems in its complete form.

The River-Merchant’s Wife: A Letter

                           Ezra Pound
                          (After Li Po)

While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead
I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.
You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse,
You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums.
And we went on living in the village of Chōkan:
Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.
At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.

At fifteen I stopped scowling,
I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever, and forever.
Why should I climb the look out?

At sixteen you departed
You went into far Ku-tō-en, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead.

You dragged your feet when you went out.
By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses,
Too deep to clear them away!
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.
The paired butterflies are already yellow with August
Over the grass in the West garden;
They hurt me.
I grow older.
If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,
Please let me know beforehand,
And I will come out to meet you
As far as Chō-fū-Sa.

Philippine Daily News / China/Hongkong: Food for Thought
September 12, 2010, 11:29:36 PM

an email from a friend, quoted in toto:

"Guys,

Time to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!  Let's start by deporting all the illegal Chinese in Quiapo, Divisoria, Ongpin and wherever else in the Philippines.  Those that claim to be Filipinos and protected by the police but cannot speak Tagalog.

Whoever wrote this, thank you, very well said...

You hate the Filipino people for the hostage fiasco, that unfortunate incident that went out of control at the end. This was a hostage situation that was under control and which netted 7 Chinese tourists to be released upon the efforts of our policemen.

You appear and sound sanctimonious and have even stepped upon our sovereignty.  You have demanded apology, the moon and the heavens.  You hate the Filipino people as if we wanted this unfortunate incident to happen.  First and foremost, we offer our condolences to the families of the 8 that were killed in this incident.  Secondly, we are sorry for the bungled handling of this hostage taking. It was unfortunate, it was an accident, we never planned it that way.  Is it fair to blame a whole nation for a situation that was never planned?

Let me ask you this question, should we hate you also for the lead poisoning caused by the paint you used in your baby furniture and toys for the children of the world?  Should we hate you also for the use of cardboard in the "siopao" that you sell to tourists?  Should we hate you also for the  melamine contamination wherein not 8, but hundreds, maybe even thousands have suffered and some even died?

Or, let us talk of Filipino casualties.  A few years ago, 3 Filipino tourists, all surnamed Madrigal, a family of 5 were walking on Tienemen Square and Beijing.  One Chinese stabbed the father and two of his children, killing all three.  Were you even sorry for what this one Chinese did?  Did the Filipino people even demand that China apologized for this unfortunate incident. This was PRE-MEDITATED MURDER.
Just as the use of lead, cardboard, melamine was pre-meditated - used because they were cheaper materials, in order to generate PROFITS for the Chinese businessman.  Did you pay damages the same way you are demanding damages from the Filipino nation and people.

Where was the anger of the Chinese and Hongkong people?  Did you even apologize to the world?  My God in the case of melanine, you even kept this information from the world, until you were exposed for what you are!!!

Enough!  We sympathize but don't blame the Filipino people.

So you want to send our OFWs home that take care of your children? They play an important part in your lives.  Both spouses are able to work, earn money because of the tender loving care being heaped on your children by Filipino maids and yayas/amahs.  While you pay our OFWs for the work they do, you earn more for the love and care they bestow on your children. Go ahead, send our OFWs home. Let us see how that will affect your family incomes.

Enough!"

#44029

real bad and sad.  no woman should ever be subjected to this kind of humiliation.

i'm curious though about the headline (or this thread's title).  i thought such descriptions as the color of skin, nationality, and religion are no longer politically correct because of their divisive implications.  so why the adjective 'muslim'?  is this the original heading of the bbc news?  the excerpt posted here doesn't mention any religion of the rapists.

if the rapists were christians, would the headline have been 'christian rapists filmed rape on mobile phone'?

That's right Gen. Jacob H. Smith,U.S. Army officer,a civil war soldier, who ordered the massacre of Filipino civilians during The Phil.-American war.It happened long time ago.The U.S. military nowadays are not that barbaric.

true, cuj.  in fact, soldiers then as now are supposed to be trained and steeped in professionalism.  it is on hindsight, in the judgment of history, when their acts in and especially during decisive moments in battle are deemed heroic or barbaric.

more currently, history's judgment already veers on the negative on the 1968 my lai massacre in south vietnam.

"The My Lai Massacre was the mass murder conducted by a unit of the U.S. Army on March 16, 1968 of 347â€"504 unarmed citizens in South Vietnam, all of whom were civilians and a majority of whom were women, children (including babies) and elderly people.

Many of the victims were sexually abused, beaten, tortured, and some of the bodies were found mutilated.  The massacre took place in the hamlets of Mỹ Lai and My Khe of SÆ¡n Mỹ village during the Vietnam War.  While 26 U.S. soldiers were initially charged with criminal offenses for their actions at My Lai, only William Calley was convicted. He served only three years of an original life sentence, while on house arrest.

When the incident became public knowledge in 1969, it prompted widespread outrage around the world. The massacre also increased domestic opposition to the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Three U.S. servicemen who made an effort to halt the massacre and protect the wounded were denounced by U.S. Congressmen, received hate mail and death threats and found mutilated animals on their doorsteps.  Only 30 years after the event were their efforts honored."
(from wikipedia)

then there's the guantanamo and abu ghraib torture and abuse of prisoners.

sometimes, barbarism is not so ancient after all.

Ms, Isle I almost have similar story few months ago. Kay sa countryside man lagi mi so akong mga anak ug ako always enjoy walking unya sindang pangadye ug rosaryo . The children always beg to visit our water hole they call it Our little Lake. It's actually a drainage ditch. Day before perting kusuga sa ulan. Then sa hapit na mi maabot sa drainage ditch I hear a faint meow sounds. Akong gisubay ug asa dapit ang sounds and it lead me to the ditch. Perting looya sa kitty half submerge sa tubig mao akong gipunit ug gidali dali ug putos sa jacket kay spring man diay to tugnaw pa. Happy kaayo ang mga bata nako. We even name the cat prince Nicolai. I always love to hear my children call the cat Nicolai naay something special sa pag pronounce nila sa name. One week later my son insist nga invite daw namo neighbor kid kay magdula sila diri sa farm. We drive the golf cart to their place with our black dog following us. Na kay naa may duha ka iro pud to among silingan kabalo ka unsay nahitabo sunod gabugno ag mga iro perting ulawa to nako. Tuod man diri tong among neighbor kid. When he sees the cat  ing declare gyud siya nga ilaha tong iring nga na missing ilang gipangita. R2D2 ang ngalan daw. Dali pud ko ing ingon nga yeah inyo ni kay didto ni nako dapit sa inyoha gi rescue. I felt so bad after kay gidala man gyud pag uli sa neigbor kid ang new pet sa akong mga anak. Sakit akong dughan nagtan aw nanghilak intawon ang tulo kay ila daw to nga cat. Samot na nga for the whole week sukad pag uli ni R2D2 everyday moingon ang mga bata ug I miss Nicolai. Ingon pud akong bana nga mas maayo pa unta daw ug diri nalang to namo ang iring kay murag wala may atiman nila daghan kaayo ug flea. Giuli namo to siya wala nay flea kay hilig baya ko manghinguto ug iring unya giligo pa to namo ug gibutangan ug flea collar. At least karon naa napud new kitten akong mga anak. Si Bootsie medyo upset pero she will get this over soon.

kalooy sa imong 3 kids.  i hope the owners of nicolai a.k.a. r2d2 are worthy of him.  that kitten could have caught deadly feline pneumonia if you were not there to fetch him from that cold ditch!  that's why i always have my kittens and cats vaccinated annually for feline pneumonia, rabies, and distemper.

one thing with kids, they recover fast. :D

MAMMA MIA: The Custody Battle Royale

who wants a stray beadle, a puppy of unknown breed?  ("mixed breed" i believe is the metaphor for "street dogs".)  everybody, it seems.

jeremy tells me that he's stuck in the middle.  he saw me grieve, he said, but his grandfather has been shouting to the neighborhood to have everything done for him to have mamma mia.

i work in a resort hotel and mamma mia can have all the food he wants, i'll have her registered, vaccinated and spayed, there's only my grandfather and me and he is alone when i report for work and he really wants the puppy, all the works.  jeremy said it all.

the banana republic pipes in to say that i haven't figured out what would happen if by chance mamma mia's original owner came to claim her.  now that's a real dose of cold water.

mamma mia is yours and your grandfather's, i finally said, scared of the thought of the original owner whom i do not know coming to our place to claim her, in case.  jeremy's place, i figured, would be the last place the original owner would consider if ever he looks for his lost puppy.

i'll be looking for a home for her eventually, anyway.  what else could i ask for now that she has a permanent home where she could be very well cared for?  but as long as i am here, i want visiting rights, i mean, mamma mia visits with us at least two days a week, i said.  if i have to, i can fetch her on those days and return her on schedule.

the other conditions i gave were that mamma mia should always be on a leash when she goes out, she sleeps inside the house, bones as food are no-no, and puppy food should be part of her diet, which i'm willing to provide.

i slept well that night, happy that mamma mia is all right and that i will see her again.  but then i thought of that little boy and felt some pangs somewhere.

MAMMA MIA:  The Lost and Found Puppy was Lost Again, and Found Again

evening of september 7.  an unexpected knock at the door brought good news.  and bad news.

mamma mia was found in a house some blocks away from where we lost her.  an 8-year-old boy was playing with her and had taken her as his own.  as told, he ran inside their house with mamma mia when he realized that the "owner" was there to claim her.  a talk with his parents did the trick, with profuse tears from the little boy.  i played the sorrow of the little boy in my mind.  the scene must be heartbreaking.  what i would give to have the puppy if i were the parent of that little boy.

there was more.  the leader of the mamma mia search team, his name's jeremy, has a wheelchair-bound grandfather who demanded that the puppy remain with him.  we know how unreasonable aging and ailing people can become.  we could get sick just giving in to their desires and caprices.  (we need not wait for our turn to be in their place; it could come sooner than we think.  sigh.)

MAMMA MIA:  The Lost and Found Puppy was Lost Again

i thought i will never open this thread again.

september 4, i posted mamma mia's pictures on this thread (reply #144).  by september 6, we lost her.

she was brought by our household help on her day off so she could play outdoors.  then she was gone.  i cannot explain the profound sense of loss i felt when the news hit me.  i cried the whole afternoon.

it took 2 days for 3 people to look for her, fanning out in the neighborhood, asking anyone of any possible sighting.  reports varied.  a car had stopped and a driver picked up something, though they could not say if it was a puppy that was picked up.  streets were checked for telltale signs of an accident.  none was found.  i was ready to place an ad in the local paper with mamma mia's picture and a plea to return her to me.

we lose what does not really belong to us, i thought.  and what about the original owner?  still, i wanted to know what really happened to this shy puppy.  i can try to be brave and move on after some sense of closure, i assured myself.

Ate Lee,

If you like this color, then I surmise you must love Loboc River & its cruise. ;)

nice of you to think of loboc river with tb's greenness, lorenz.  that is one beautiful river with its pristine greenness.  i hope it will remain as such.

(the "blue danube" is a disappointment.  it's far from blue.  it's not even green.  it's more muddy brown with a tinge of gray and a very little hint of green, the kind that one would do well to just imagine because such greenness is almost not there anyway.)

i'll take loboc river hands down.

I suppose it depends upon your level of cynicism, but if you look back at the history of the major religions you see many crimes against humanity, so there is precedent.  I am suspicious because the Church has had so much political power here for so long, so they must take some of the responsibility for the current state of affairs.

thanks for pointing out “cynicism” (it does get the better of me at times, i must admit).  the undeniable crimes against humanity in the history of many religions may be attributed to birth pangs at its kindest and, at its cruelest, to the equally undeniable human factor of greed at a time when there was no separation between church and state.  we know how european monarchies and aristocracies used religion to gain political ascendancy.  (with characters like the borgias, for one.)

it is equally undeniable that the church at the time also exercised political powers without regard but for its own survival and protection of its own powers.  but the major religions continue to stand despite the flaws of their people.

in our day and age, in this our country, the church may be perceived as having too much political power.  but i believe it is given more credit than it deserves in terms of influence.  yet it is a sector that has to be represented, and it happens to be a sector that likewise represents the majority.

the church, in this case the catholic church, is just one among many sectors, as you may know.  there is even our homegrown iglesia ni cristo that’s noisier and more forceful in its attempts at political influence despite the fact that its adherents constitute a very small percentage of the population.  but sectors are here to stay, including cooking gas retailers and security guards whose representatives ran for congress.  the more, the merrier (i hope).

as for taking responsibility for the current state of affairs, every one of us will have to take that burden just as we all have to take credit when things get better.

meanwhile, all these negative stories about our country (dutch boy’s, for instance) make me wonder why we got high marks as a happy nation on the planet.  last i heard (which was 2 years ago), in a study of 50 countries our country was no. 12 followed by 13th placer the u.s.  in another study of 178 countries, the philippines came out the 17th happiest while the u.s., the world’s top economic power, came out 150th.

material wealth, after all, is subjective when it comes to happiness.  could it be because we take our religion seriously?

OT:  as for dutch boy, how poor can the non-whites of south africa be, even after apartheid, the legacy of the boers, they of dutch descent?
