What about practicality, and where the option and concept lies?

The problem lies in the misinterpretation of contraception for abortion,
or implying that the use of contraception is synonymous with committing abortion.
But the two are mutually exclusive.

Abortion, as defined by medical professionals, is the termination of pregnancy.
This occurs after conception â€" after the sperm and egg meet.
Contraception on the other hand prevents the meeting of the sperm and egg in the first place.
Its intent, therefore, is no different from natural family planning methods endorsed by the Church.

The bill endorses age-appropriate sexuality education to ensure that young Filipinos
have the right information in matters of sex and reproductive health.
We cannot assume that upon reaching adolescence,
the young will not be curious about the workings of their body.
The bill intends to instill values for the youth to exercise responsible decision-making with regard to their sexuality.

Aber hallo here comes the modern youngters, hey we wanna have fun but likewise a responsible one.
The church teaches us morality and spirituality, the RH bill guide us to be more aware.
We wanna abide both, is there a solution in between..?

my thoughts, scarbzy migs...

it looks like it's difficult to distinguish between what is practical and what choice means for the two sides.  we know that both are agreed on family planning, it is in the means that the two sides diverge.  natural as against artificial, as we all know.

the church is well aware that there are artificial contraceptives that are abortifacients (these kill the fertilized ovum).  it is also aware that millions are allegedly involved in the lobby for the passage of the rh bill.

those big pharmaceuticals are the very sector that stands to profit most once hundreds of thousands of contraceptives are distributed for free.  these contraceptives are not donated by big pharmaceuticals.  often as not, these are paid for by our government with aid money from western countries and which we will have to pay for.  (there's no such thing as a free 'aid'.  it's always a loan in the guise of an aid, and usually the 'donor' that calls the shots includes a stipulation on population control, with specific time-bounded targets that practicality ensures can only be met by artificial means, with contraceptives bought by us from their own big pharmaceuticals.  the more our government follows this stipulation, the more will the donor release subsequent aids.  well, geopolitics equals multinational big businesses.)

some of us with some background on big-time project proposals for funding must be aware that sometimes aid that's entered as 'cash' on paper is actually the cost of the items that are 'donated'.  heaven help us if we have to pay, because it's a loan, for contraceptives worth millions, because the donor country had already bought them for us from their own pharmaceuticals.

these are just some of the things that have to be cleared out by the two sides, i suppose, to erase the mistrust.

lest we forget, wasn't it third world women who unwittingly became laboratory rats when the first contraceptive pills went on trial?  these were reportedly distributed first in third world countries, as aids, before these were made available in the countries that manufactured them.  all because the population of third world countries is the whipping boy of the west when it comes to poverty.  tell that to the homeless in new york.

wow, if people support the RH bill they are sinners? nindota diay aning catholism noh? no wonder naay daghan pari ug madre nga naay mga anak even when naa pa sila sa ilang pagkapari ug pagkamadre kay against man jud sila aning RH bill.

good luck pinas.

the news item posted on this thread does not say anything about people supporting the rh bill as sinners.

sorry to say, jas4, that your conclusion that "naay daghan pari ug madre nga naay mga anak... kay against... sila aning rh bill" stands on shaky grounds, devoid of basis and logic.  your conclusion should at least be data-based.  unsa kadaghana ang pari ug madre nga naay anak, unsay percentage in relation to the number of priests and nuns at a given time in a given place?  if you have these data rather than mere imagination and personal bias, your conclusion may at least sound credible if not believable.

kun matangtang ka sa imong trabaho diha, malipay ba kag naay moingon nga unsaon ta man, gitangtang kay kining dugo ug pilipino pareha man god ug dugo ni andrew cunanan nga gigolo nga mopatay ug datong bay0t nga versace.  that is illogical conclusion, without basis, without data.

di lang unta ta magpataka ug conclude ug way labot sa main issue as we wait for how this whole rh bill pans out, pros and cons all well-taken, civilized processes of legislation notwithstanding.

The Catholic Church should not interfere with this problem. Priest should be more concern to spiritual matters rather than political issues.

the catholic church must interfere with this issue (it's not a problem, yet).  both priests and laymen should be concerned with both spiritual and political issues because the two are interrelated.  can you imagine political issues that do not carry spiritual underpinnings?  it's called anarchy at its tamest form.

I have been reading some statements here and some are good and some are just making fun.

hello, jelly bean.  let me share my two-cents' worth.  i guess those you take as "just making fun" do it for a reason:  to relieve the stress of the terrible exchanges in this thread.  we are concerned, and we are sorry that such exchanges had to happen.  be assured our concept of what is right and wrong, what is proper and improper, is unchanged.

i cannot speak for the rest, but judging from what i could glean from all the posts in this thread-- and that's not easy, considering the pitfalls of miscommunication that the exchanges wrought-- most of us are thankful that someone like you is in our place to do what we cannot do either because of our distance or our different concerns.

from my end, i'm scandalized by the name-calling and personal accusations hurled against you, which have nothing to do with the main issue of auditing and taxation or whatever.  for that please accept my apologies.

you have been misunderstood, but you have withstood the onslaught.  congratulations!  if a person is measured by the good that he has done, then as of this very moment, you hold the ascendancy.

here are hopes that the ongoing tbn investigation or auditing produce results that will bring peace.  again, thank you for being you.  have a great weekend too!

sayon ra ni sultihon ni congressman lagman karon kay di pa man eleksyon.  nganong di angay niya ni isulti?  kay ang church and state relationship cannot be overlooked.  separated, yes.  related, much more so.  state laws are made based on spiritual values and traditions of what are right and wrong.

a case in point:  kun naay pari nga suspect nga nakapatay, adto sa korte husayon, di ba?  di man moingon ang catholic church nga way labot ang state nila.

another case in point:  ang church wedding nagkinahanglan ug license gikan sa government.  moingon ba ang church nga di ni civil wedding mao nga way labot ang government?

naay relationship ang church and state because the two institutions are concerned with the very same people who are members of both.

conclusion:  this congressman is an idiot.  he is going to be one of those grandstanding politicians when this rh bill issue spills over.  naghilom pa ron ang uban.  pagkuyanap ani nga issue, daghan na na sila nga mo-speech for the tv audience.  hohum.

time for our lawmakers to have a real dialogue with church authorities to iron out issues and come up with meeting points.  (beyond the glare of media while the process is going on.  as it is, it's the media that's fanning this issue with their amplify-and-diminish reporting of facts.  remember the tourist bus hostage crisis and the role of the media in that tragedy?) >:(

As with all major religions, it's a numbers game.
I'm dubious that even the religious texts support their argument: relating it to the story Onan is arguably wrong, in that God was angry at him for spiting his brother rather than for refusing to procreate, i.e. the intent rather than the act was punished.

i take the story of onan as i take other stories in the old testament--- open to many layers of interpretations, symbolisms, lessons, fraught as the old testament stories are with the culture and tradition of a certain people in those times.

strangely, there are even those who take onan's story as an argument for the death penalty.

yes, it's dubious.  but is this really what the catholic church is using as an argument against artificial contraception?  (if so, i haven't come across it.  i'd be glad to if only to find out how it's taken in context.)

i have to go for now. i had a great time discussing my point of view to you but i really hope that the catholic church will give it's people the choice on what to use or do and not let its own belief be implemented to every one. I don't want to let the church rule the state and vice versa. we have the separation between church and state.

why focus much on separation and not on relationship between church and state?

well, i know a lot of people are brainwashed by the church by giving them false hopes. there are plenty of conflicts within the bible. but we are being threatened that if we will question the integrity of the bible, we go to eternal damnation. who will not get scared of that?

the church cannot prove most, if not some, that is written in the bible, that's why they force to introduce to us what we call "faith" - just accept it as it is and no questions.

science has been in conflict with the findings and in constantly in conflict with the church. but science is in conflict with one another due to the new facts, new findings and new technology that they keep on rebutting their own conclusion. and this is one major basis of the church to deny the science' claim on how the universe was created.

aren't you also brainwashed?  against the church?

As an utterly non-spiritual person I can still see that abortion, including just after the point of conception is to be avoided.  Late term abortions we can agree are killing a sentient being.
However, what's the big deal about artificial contraception?  Who cares whether or not I put a bit of latex over my member?  There are often plenty of good reasons, based on consideration for others, for doing so.
Excommunicate?  I don't think they would dare, hence the backtracking.

rightly so, mr ben.  believing that "abortion including just after the point of conception" had to be taken as "killing a sentient being", whether we take it with or without spiritual dimensions.

the big deal with artificial contraceptions is that some of these cause abortion (abortifacients), the very thing that the church is up against.

my guess was right, though.  initial reports on the excommunication thing need not be swallowed hook, line and sinker.  media practitioners, despite rules on the contrary, have their own biases and treatment of information to make their reports attractive.  it was out of context and out of proportion.  (my gut feeling was that no self-respecting catholic bishop will categorically say that for our country's president whose late mother was very close to the church.)

there was no backtracking as the supposed reason to backtrack from was a mere phantom.  it's like a father telling his daughter to take care so she won't fall off a bridge, but the mother makes a big issue out of the warning by declaring that her husband has plans to push their daughter off a bridge after all.

p.s.  the church may not mind whatever you put on your member.  what it minds is the official government sanction and the free distribution of whatever it is you may put. ;D

abs cbn news ....

Police said Celdran, wearing a dark suit and top hat, started shouting and held up the placard in the the middle of a homily at the Manila Cathedral Thursday afternoon. The word "Damaso" refers to Father Damaso, an abusive priest who is a character in Jose Rizal’s novel "Noli Me Tangere."

Celdran said he made the demonstration as a peaceful protest against the Catholic Church's position against contraceptives.

"I am a Catholic and born Catholic. Marami Catholic sa Pilipinas who are very disappointed with the position of the church because it is anti-women's rights, anti-gay rights and anti-human rights especially when it comes to reproductive health. Ngayong nasa kulungan ako, we can see na anti-freedom of speech din sila," he said.

celdran's demonstration was anything but "a peaceful protest".  he disrupted an ongoing church service.  i'm not a lawyer, but here's what i found in the revised penal code of the philippines, book 2, that helped me understand why celdran was jailed:

Section Four. â€" Crimes against religious worship

Art. 132. Interruption of religious worship. â€" The penalty of prision correccional in its minimum period shall be imposed upon any public officer or employee who shall prevent or disturb the ceremonies or manifestations of any religion.  If the crime shall have been committed with violence or threats, the penalty shall be prision correccional in its medium and maximum periods.

Art. 133. Offending the religious feelings. â€" The penalty of arresto mayor in its maximum period to prision correccional in its minimum period shall be imposed upon anyone who, in a place devoted to religious worship or during the celebration of any religious ceremony shall perform acts notoriously offensive to the feelings of the faithful.

even the half-literates among us would know that exercising our freedoms entails responsibilities.  i don't think celdran would have been jailed if he simply continued giving out free contraceptives.  he is even free to cut off and give his own male member to any taker, including a hungry turkey.  that won't land him in jail.  but if he did these inside a church, in front of worshippers, as he did with his dramatic 'damaso' stunt, that's another story.

it is as though the way you are fighting for your "cause" is not giving you adherents, cheers.  already you are implying that you're so right about your accusations when the investigation still has to produce results.  you even resort to name-calling.  such tactics don't make you right.  in fact, you run the risk of shading from some of us what may have been right.

so you're offering the likes of raquelproud a lecture/seminar on taxation?  the next thing we know, you'll be offering a lecture on the formula of going to the moon just to prove that you are right in your suspicions of how other people use donated money.

well, you chose english as your medium in your posts.  how about you getting a lecture/seminar first on basic english grammar and composition?  a little vocabulary enhancement on the side may also help.  let's start with the word "sanctimonious".  kindly look it up in the dictionary. ;D

it looks like there's still a lot to go before this difference between catholic church values and government policy can be ironed out.  for all we know, p-noy made those statements in favor of choice (not artificial contraception per se, but the choice of couples on what to use as contraceptives, which includes artificial ones and their free distribution), to test the reactions of various sectors in society.  thus had the catholic church expressed its reaction through the bishop.

it's too soon to swallow the "threaten with excommunication" yarn.
#43570

more quoted statements of the bishop:

"Because the position of the Church (is) that human life is conceived at the beginning of the conception, with contraceptive pills that are abortifacient, that is killing of the fertilized ovum," Odchimar said.

He reiterated the Church’s opposition to the passage of the reproductive health bill, which has been re-filed in Congress.

"We have been consistent with our position that we are against it. Because if the reason is the population problem connected to poverty alleviation, I don’t (think population increase) is a problem. (That) is not an issue," Odchimar said.

"There are also other things to be considered like the migration of people flocking to the cities and they cannot find work. Ours is an agricultural country. Agriculture should be enhanced," he said. "But it is ironic that the (International Rice Research Institute) is in the Philippine but we are importing rice from Vietnam which was ravaged by the Vietnam war. Vietnam is exporting rice to the Philippines."

Odchimar said the bishops were "aware that there is much money (for the) lobby for the passage of the reproductive health bill."

"It's an open secret that the pharmaceuticals and laboratories will be the ones who will benefit, because they are the ones supplying the pills and other contraceptive devices," he said. "We will be planning our next move....We do not have police power, we don’t discount the possibility of mobilizing the lay organizations," he added.
#43571

and here are the statements of the bishop, as quoted:

"Well, being the President of all, you must consider the position of the Catholic Church because we are approaching these issues from the moral aspect like the unborn.  Abortion is a grave crime. Excommunication is attached to [it]. That is an issue of gravity, that is a violation of God's commandment," Odchimar said.

When asked if Aquino might be excommunicated if he insists that government should distribute artificial contraceptives, Odchimar said: "That is a possibility.... Right now, it is a proximate possibility."

"But right now, we are open for dialogue," Odchimar said.
#43572
further, in this same news article by tubeza:

Speaking on the Church-run Radio Veritas, Bishop Nereo Odchimar of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, the current CBCP president, said that even Mr. Aquino may be covered by excommunication.  Mr. Aquino, a practicing Catholic, has stood by his position that Filipino couples who choose to use artificial contraceptives should be allowed to do so.

so far, can one glean a threat?  the bishop was just reiterating the stand of the catholic church and the possibility of excommunicating those who do not follow its stand, be they presidents or "the poor".  (well, all other religions have their own rules too.)

#43573

here's another version of the same news.  the word "threaten" is out, rendering it less "shocking".  note the use of the word "remind" instead of "threaten".

CBCP reminds Aquino about excommunication

By Philip Tubeza
Philippine Daily Inquirer
30 September 2010

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines on Wednesday reminded President Aquino III that providing contraceptives to poor couples who opt for artificial birth control face excommunication from the church.

i'm curious as to the exact words of the bishop.  the news item posted here is incomplete (it is the first paragraph only, which contains the gist of the whole story as news articles go); it does not quote the bishop in toto.  it's either he may have said it or he may have been taken out of context by the newswriter.

Jesus said to the first disciples, "Come, see for yourself."

The rest is history...

To those who heed the call, they left everything and followed Jesus... not just to the different towns and villages but followed him to the end. All of them eventually died for the faith that Jesus initially planted in them.

The rest is history... we learned in Scriptures that those who chose to stay in the dark, and missed out on the Lord's invitation, eventually were responsible, or were partly responsible, for his rejection and eventual death.

In short, there were those who heard the call and there were those who chose to continue their old ways. The faith is never forced on anyone. But to those who chose to "put on Christ" must "clothe themselves in Christ" (meaning, there are rules to follow and doctrines to adhere to). And that job was clearly given to Peter, the "rock" upon which He will build his Church, to the Apostles... and in turn to the Holy Mother Church, the dispenser of the mysteries of faith... without which I don't know what kind of chaos we would be in.

Was the Church perfect in its administration over the course of many centuries? No. Far from it. It a society composed of imperfect human beings. There were dark ages in Church history as well as renaissances, give and take. And yet, nothing can take the fact the our Church has the Apostolic succcession (tradition) that goes back the 12 and ultimately to the Lord himself.

To this day, the offer still stands... pero wa jud na ipugos, whether you agree or not with the Church's stand on many issues affecting the lives of its members.

But if you claim to be a Catholic, it's not a matter off democracy, or, what they call nowadays as Christian consumerism (kamoy magbuot kung unsay inyong tohoan o dili). The Church always stands for what is right and what she believes as Christ-like. Nothing more. Nothing less.

In short, kung ang usa ka tawo wa mooyon sa barogana sa Simbahang Katoliko, pwede man adto mo join sa TBN (Tagbilaran By Night) kay didto pwede magsigeg lalis... pwede pa mo join kay kamolo pag silag lalis hehehe.

whew!  finally, nahuwasan ko.  after going through the pages in this thread, this is the answer i've been waiting for.  if i may borrow ms da binsi's expression--- i like it!  thanks, fr. chic, for simplifying faith and church tradition in terms that any layman can understand if he chooses to.  (may i copy this for my personal notes?)

Oh man..oh je money..money²..ka bibo ba dinhi  ;)

Hey folks, when it come to cases like this, there must be a "black and white protocol" (its an auditing idiom)
- mean.. it should be recorded properly thru "incoming and outgoing" invoices.
- any monetary transaction must be reported to BIR whether its non-profit,private or firm.

-On the part of a Donor whether private or firm, there must be an invoice or receipt testifying the said amount >given to a certain org.
-this outgoing invoice will be used for yearly Income Tax Return (ITR) and for Financial statement.

-On the part of Charity org. or whatever it is..as a recipient(incoming invoice) is necessary.
- Liquidation of money transaction from one beneficiary to another is a must.
- say.., a needy person received 500php(say for hospital dues), he/she must sign a receipt thus he/she handed the said amount.

The Charity Organization as a whole is liable in any failure (as to what the case-maybe),not only the representatives or officers.
Members have the right to question where the money comes and goes.

-zitat- (my one cent opinion)  :-X

Right. I know Jelly Bean personally she is very nice lady and was shock to read on the personal attack. Siya pa ingtabang siya pa nuon nahimong dautan. She help promote this organization,I know she speak from the heart pero lisod ning naay argabyado oi. I'm thankful for her for staying in Bohol and try helping out she had option to go back in the U.S but she stay in Philippines anyway.

and i would like to believe that boholanos are a grateful people.  exceptions aside, surely many others are thankful for the likes of jelly bean.

personal attacks notwithstanding (unnecessary to the issue at hand, really), the two ladies have their respective creditable points.  hopefully, these may turn into meeting points and not breaking points.

come to think of it, wherever i go and wherever there are filipino organizations (and these are ubiquitous) whose purpose is almost always to "help the poor back home" with fund-raising, then almost always trouble follows.  money seems to create mistrust.

my personal rule:  if there's mistrust, don't give.

yes, no one is forcing anybody to donate to tbn. :(

Ang babayng way bilbil

Ang babayng way bilbil kay morag baybay nga way kimba.
Morag sigay nga way bukobuko, tabugok nga way ata.
Sa bilbil mahibaw-an nganong bawron ang kadagatan,
Nganong gansang-gansangon ang mga batu sa hunasan.

Ang babayng way bilbil kay morag kawayang way buku.
Morag dapaw nga way katul, langub nga way tangu.
May misteryo ang bilbil nga susama sa misteryo sa lasang:
Engkanto sa pusod sa busay, minu sa pus-on sa pangpang.

Ang babayng way bilbil kay morag dan nga way kurbada,
Morag bungtod nga way subida, simbahan nga way kampana.

Samtang way bisan kinsa nga di mosalig sa langub nga way tangu.
Way misteryo ang bilbil tungod sa tambok nga wa maplastado
Abyan sa minu mapapas hinoon niini, apil pa ang mga engkanto.

Dalan nga way kurbada menos ug disgrasya sa laktod-laktod;
Bilbil subida nga sobrag bungtod, kampana nga gikawat sa lungsod.
Ang babayng bilbilon morag dumpol nga sugilanong gabitay:
Ang pagpauraray sa bilbil daw kapyot sa way haligi nga lantay.
