Pitbulls put down in Philippines after rescue
By Teodoro Aljibe | AFP News â€" 12 hours ago

Twenty-five pitbulls rescued from an online dog-fighting racket run by South Koreans in the Philippines have been put down, and another 215 could be also destroyed, rescuers said Tuesday.

All the dogs, rescued by police from a farm south of Manila Friday, could end up being destroyed unless people come forward to adopt the least aggressive ones that can still be nursed back to health, vet Wilford Almoro said.

Most are weakened by dehydration and poor nutrition, and many of those that were destroyed had serious injuries, said Almoro, of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society, a charity that rescues and rehabilitates abused animals,

The remaining dogs "condition could go downhill in the coming days, and if no one will help, then they would have to be put down as well," he told AFP.

Seventeen dogs with the worst injuries were put down on Saturday, including one that had half its tongue ripped out and another with both its ears bitten off, said Almoro.

Eight other dogs were destroyed Tuesday, and another five were set to be put down later in the day, he added.

"Some have unhealed wounds, but most are down to skin and bones and their rib cages are showing," Almoro said, adding most had scars from being wounded in fights.

"They appear to be suffering from dehydration and they are just lying down on the ground where they are tethered."

He estimated that physical rehabilitation for all the animals would cost 3.34 million pesos (about $78,000) and they would also need treatment to correct their aggressive behaviour.

"Just imagine the amount of work required for their continuous upkeep... I don't know if people can raise money for that 24/7," he added.

After police raided the two-hectare (4.94-acre) farm, they arrested 12 people, including eight South Koreans accused of running the illegal dog fights that were streamed live on the Internet to spectators who placed bets.

Dog fighting does not have a large following in the Philippines, unlike cockfighting, which is the country's most popular sport and sees roosters with metal spurs tied to their legs forced to fight to the death.

Almoro said the dogs had been kept in abominable conditions, tied up with chains, in an orchard hidden from view by high walls of sheet metal.

"They were constantly exposed to pain, trauma, and deep wounds. Given their condition, many of them would likely get infected if they remained here," he said.

"Putting them up for adoption is easier said than done, because you have to make sure you are not handing them over to people who would sell them back to dog-fighting gangs."

He urged the Philippine parliament to amend and toughen up the law against animal cruelty, now punishable by a maximum prison term of two years and a 6,000-peso fine.

Tuesday of Holy Week

Reading 1: Isaiah 49: 1-6
Psalm: Ps 71: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15, 17
Gospel: John 13: 21-33, 36-38

Let me receive your forgiveness and mercy.
The second Servant song shapes our reflection today
as we watch that amazing dinner scene on Tuesday of this passion week.
We experience the pain of his knowing
that he will be betrayed and denied.
Yet, the hour he is about to face is the hour of his Glory.
And he promises that where he is going, we will surely follow.
Our desire is to celebrate the gift being offered us.
Let us pray to Christ our Savior, who redeemed us by his death and resurrection:
Lord, have mercy on us.
You went up to Jerusalem to suffer and so enter into your glory,
- bring your Church to the Passover feast of heaven.
You were lifted high on the cross and pierced by the soldier’s lance,
- heal our wounds. You made the cross the tree of life,
-  give its fruit to those reborn in baptism.
On  the cross you forgave the repentant thief,
- forgive us our sins.

Bible Study / The virtue is not in suffering
April 03, 2012, 09:17:37 PM

Article first published in PADAYON: Our Life Journey

While many tend to glorify suffering, people who experience it will surely disagree. Having tasted the worst in life, so far, I can attest to this.

Yet, the belief in the virtue of suffering has been embedded in the psyche of Filipinos for centuries. More so, that there are also efforts to perpetuate such conviction for reasons only known to perpetrators. Some take suffering as a pass to heaven. Others look at sufferings as trademark of the followers of Christ. There are denominations that associate or even expect their clergy to undergo the process inevitably. Church members fondly call their pastors manugpangabudlay. An Ilonggo term which connotes hardship and difficulties.

Countries with colonial past, where religion is used in conquest are most vulnerable to this fate. Like the case of the Philippines. Historians note how colonizers integrate religion into their subjugation scheme. From feudalistic to capitalist systems, religion plays a big role in domestication of the subjects. In the context of the Philippine, as pointed out by nationalist historians, while the sword was used in conquest, the cross pacified resistance. The blessedness of poverty, mourning, oppression and persecution as taught in the church make people accept their fate, with relief, expectant of the future reward.

The belief in the virtue of suffering is more evident during Lenten season. Most often, crucifixion and death have been given emphasis in the observance. This can be attributed to the prevalent notion that the cross has salvific power. Redemption has been closely associated with pain and suffering. While Easter is considered the cornerstone of Christian faith, in practice people put emphasis on crucifixion.

Interestingly, attempts have been done by church authorities to dissuade rituals of self-inflicted pain and suffering in holy week celebration. Clergy, of various affiliations, consistently highlights the significance of resurrection in Lenten sermons and teaching. Still, it has not penetrated yet to the Filipino psyche. Filipinos are very much predisposed to suffering, according to Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz. “The Church can only do so much to highlight the importance of Easter among Filipinos because suffering and poverty as well as the love for children are already deeply rooted in Philippine culture,” he noted.

While working on this series of Lenten reflections, I remember the article of a Filipino Jesuit priest. It was published after the execution of three Filipinos abroad convicted of drug-related offense. Fr. Manoling V. Francisco contends that suffering is not virtuous, but love is. Suffering is not even redemptive per se. The love underlying the pain makes it salvific.

Does it negate then the impact of the sufferings of Jesus? Not really. Fr. Francisco qualifies his point: “Jesus’ physical torment and emotional anguish do not redeem us; his willingness to suffer for his convictions and out of love for us is that which saves.”

Yet while drinkers know they’re putting their livers at risk, those who are overweight don’t, and because the disease is silent with no obvious symptoms, it can go undetected until it is too late. It is usually spotted by chance when people are in their 40s and 50s.

‘Normally it gets picked up when someone is having a general health screening or blood test for another condition,’ says Dr Brown.

It is diagnosed with blood tests to check the levels of enzymes that can indicate inflammation. Scans or even a liver biopsy may also be done.

Often it causes no symptoms other than mild tiredness, says Dr Brown.

‘Whereas heart problems might lead to breathlessness, for example, the liver is like a plodding donkey that carries on without any complaint â€" until it is too late.

‘And GPs and the public are not particularly switched on about it, as it was only first described about 15 years ago.

‘I work in A&E, too, and I see people whose liver disease has not been picked up who are now in liver failure.

'Or they are referred to me with late-stage liver cancer, and this is the first they have known of their liver disease.’

Tony, from Dartford in Kent, knows he is lucky to have been diagnosed when he was.

‘I’d had a pain in my toe for a while and decided to use the private health cover I get at work,’ he says.

‘I didn’t even know my liver function was being tested, and when the doctor said “one of your liver function tests is not right” I didn’t really take it seriously.’

Soon after, in May 2011, he had more blood tests and an ultrasound.

‘I went back for  the results a few days later, and the doctor read me the riot act,’ says Tony.

‘He said my liver was suffering as a direct result of my weight. I had a BMI of about 30, putting me in the obese category.

‘What the doctor said made me realise it was time to do something.’

The good news is that a fatty liver is treatable, says Dr Brown.

‘If you start to lose weight and exercise then the liver can start to heal and the fibrosis or scarring will be broken down faster than it is produced.’

Sometimes weight-control drugs such as orlistat (which reduces the amount of fat the body absorbs) may help. Scientists are also developing ‘anti-fibrotic’ drugs to stop the liver scarring, but these are in the early stages.

After his diagnosis Tony cut out cake, biscuits and foods that quickly break down into sugars, such as white bread, and had brown or wholemeal alternatives.

He went to the gym more regularly and stopped drinking completely for three months. When he next saw his specialist six months later, he had lost more than 1½ stone.

‘This time the tests showed that my liver was fine,’ he says. -- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/
#42825
Last month a report from the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network warned that while deaths from other serious conditions such as cancer and heart disease were falling, those from liver disease have increased over the past decade by a quarter.

‘Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is already a big problem and one that’s going to get even worse,’ says Dr Phillip Harrison, a liver specialist at the London Liver Centre, London Bridge Hospital.

‘It’s like a juggernaut about to hit us.’ Worryingly, even children are developing it because they’re overweight.

And you don’t need to be obese to have a fatty liver. For some people being just a few stone overweight is enough.

‘There is a genetic element to it: not every overweight person will develop it, and some people don’t need to be obese for this to happen,’ says Dr Brown.

‘Some people who are quite thin but what we call TOFI â€" thin on the outside, fat on the inside â€" can get it.

'They’ve been overweight and lost weight but they may still have fat stored round their organs.’

This is because losing weight by cutting calories isn’t enough to shift liver fat â€" you need to exercise, too.

There are also a tiny minority who get fatty liver disease yet have never been overweight â€" why this happens is not clear.

As well as obesity, fatty liver disease is linked to high cholesterol, high blood pressure and type-2 diabetes.

‘If you have any of these conditions, your risk of  developing it increases,’ says Dr Brown.
#42826
‘The risk factors essentially revolve around obesity,’ says Dr Ashley Brown, a liver specialist at St Mary’s Hospital in West London.

‘It’s a bit like pate de foie gras â€" which is made by force-feeding geese, making their livers swell. A similar thing happens in people.’

As we put on weight, our bodies become less sensitive to insulin. Insulin helps store sugar in the cells but if it is less effective, the sugar gets stored as fat in the liver.

‘This causes inflammation in the same way as too much alcohol does,’ says Dr Brown.

‘Over years this can lead to scarring, and that  can lead to cirrhosis.’

As a result, the normally smooth liver becomes full of nodules and hard gristle, meaning it cannot function as normal.

This can have a profound effect, for not only is the liver vital for processing digested food, it clears the body of infections and helps neutralise toxins and drugs. So cirrhosis can be life-threatening.

And, as the British Liver Trust warns, obesity â€" not alcohol â€" will become the main cause of liver cirrhosis if current trends continue.
Obesity - not alcohol - will become the main cause of liver cirrhosis

Obesity - not alcohol - will become the main cause of liver cirrhosis

It’s not just cirrhosis: non-alcoholic disease can lead to liver cancer, stroke and other cancers, too.

It’s estimated more than half-a-million people in the UK could soon have non-alcoholic liver disease, although Dr Brown says it may be much more, as it is ‘significantly under-diagnosed’.

In the past ten years the number of hospital admissions has more than doubled to nearly 2,000, and already it causes almost 700 deaths a year.

Tony Oakley liked to think he was pretty healthy â€" he drank only at weekends and went to the gym a couple of times a week.

The last time he’d had time off sick was six years ago, and that was only because he broke his leg.

So imagine his shock when last May he was warned he could be dead within ten years â€" because of liver disease.

‘I was really, really shocked,’ says Tony, 50, who is married with four grown-up children and works as a customer relations director for a City bank.

‘At the weekend I have a few beers but don’t drink during the week â€" at the most I have 16 units a week.’ (This is the equivalent of six pints of lager â€" comfortably under the recommended weekly maximum of 21 units for men.)

‘I had no symptoms either â€" my liver problem only got picked up because I had a blood test when I got diagnosed with gout in my big toe.

‘I knew I was overweight â€" I’d got into the habit of snacking at work on biscuits, and got up to 17st (I’m 5ft 10ins) but because I kept fit and was never ill I thought I was fine.’

Like Tony, few people realise it’s not just alcohol that can damage the liver â€" so can too much food.

He had what is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Most sufferers are only moderate drinkers or may even be teetotal.

EIM   - (BANAT NEWS)

Horrifying moment a man jumped into a bear's enclosure
Incredibly, BOTH survived

By Daily Mail Reporter
UPDATED: 14:26 GMT, 25 November 2009

A man hangs in the jaws of a bear, seemingly about to endure a most horrendous death by being ripped apart by massive jaws and razor-sharp claws.

But in the end it was the bear who ended up fighting for his life - shot with a police bullet in order to save the man's life.

These dramatic photographs were taken by a visitor to the Berne Bear Park, Switzerland, at the weekend when European brown bear Finn, aged four, suddenly realised he had an uninvited human guest - said yesterday to be mentally handicapped - in his enclosure.

Hitler diaries

In 1978, Kujau sold his first "Hitler Diary" to a collector. In 1980, he was contacted by the journalist Gerd Heidemann who had learned of the diary. Kujau told Heidemann that the diaries were in the possession of his brother, who was a general in the East German Army. Heidemann made a deal with Kujau for "the rest" of the diaries.

Over the next two years Kujau faked a further 61 volumes and sold them to Heidemann for DM 2.5 million. Heidemann in turn received DM 9 million from his employers at Stern.

However, on their publication in 1983 the diaries were soon proved to be fakes and Heidemann and Kujau were arrested. In August 1984 Kujau was sentenced to four-and-a-half years for forgery and Lieblang one year as an accomplice. Heidemann was convicted of fraud and also received a four-and-half years in prison the following year.

On his release from prison after three years Kujau became something of a minor celebrity appearing on TV as a "forgery expert", and set up a business selling "genuine Kujau fakes" in the style of various major artists. --Wiki

Why No One Should Have Bought It:

First, there was the little fact that the initials on the cover read "F.H." instead of "A.H.," due to the forger's inability to distinguish between calligraphic lettering.

When someone finally decided to have the diaries analyzed, they found that the books weren't just fake -- they were primary-school-art-project fake. The forgeries were written in modern books with modern ink and dipped in tea in order to pass as antiques. Furthermore, the text didn't match Hitler's handwriting. "Hitler" even got the color of his own uniform wrong.

The journalist who had invested in the diaries, Gerd Heidemann, was such a sucker for Nazi memorabilia that he took the diaries at face value without, you know, running them past a historian or something. The guy he was dealing with turned out to be Konrad Kujau, a notorious forger who made his livelihood by creating fake Nazi relics and selling them to collectors for profit. Kujau did four years in prison for the stunt, but after his release, he was so famous that his forgeries sold better if he put his name on them. In fact, other forgers began to make money by forging Kujau's forgeries. -- http://www.cracked.com/

In 1983, the West German news magazine Stern announced that it had come into possession of a 62-volume collection of diaries written by none other than Germany's most famous square-mustached dictator. The diaries, written by hand and covering the entire span of Hitler's reign, mixed political diatribes with inane, sometimes amusing personal notes and anecdotes, like "Because of the new pills I have violent flatulence, and -- says Eva -- bad breath." There is literally no book that can't be improved by adding a farting Hitler chapter.

But besides giving long-sought-after insight into the nature of Hitler's farts, the diaries threatened to rewrite everything we thought we knew about the infamous Fuhrer. It painted him as a sympathetic figure who yearned for peace with Britain and wasn't even aware that his military was committing genocide, thinking they were just shooing the Jews someplace far away.

When Stern learned about the diaries, it coughed up $4 million on the spot, without checking to see if they were real. After that, offers started pouring in from media the world over to purchase the rights to publish them, and even Rupert Murdoch joined in the bidding war. Through the hysteria, nobody seemed to notice that there were a few, well, oddities.

Konrad Paul Kujau (born 27 June 1938 in Löbau, Germany; died 12 September 2000 in Stuttgart, Germany) was an illustrator and forger who became famous in 1983 as the creator of the so-called Hitler Diaries, for which he received DM 2.5 million from a person who in turn sold it for DM 9.3 million to the magazine Stern. --Wiki
