weird.  another case of changing for the sake of changing just to put a mark on their new administration?  away goes institutional memory and tradition.  anyway, let them try to read "come to malaysia" in bahasa, "smooth as silk" in thai, or "singapore girl, you're a great way to fly" in chinese. ::)

publicize the defense missile as deterrent.  fine.  what is not publicized is israel's nuclear warheads.  mao nga mopagahi gyod ang ubang countries nga mo-develop ug nuclear weapons out of national pride kay ang u.s. of a. and its traditional allies (u.k., etc.) kusog mobadlong, despite their own stock of nuclear weapons, even as they look the other way when it comes to israel. :-X

the scene that you have described is repeated many times over in our country in particular and in the third world in general.  it is as real as you and i are real.

these days, in our country, it's the difference between responsible parenthood and artificial birth control that's the issue.  if a couple doesn't want more mouths to feed and they feel that more mouths don't necessarily mean more hands that work, then fine.  no one can tell them otherwise.  but they should opt for natural birth control.

kay di man diay kaya, pugong sa panahon sa tingpugong.  mora na man hinoon ug iresponsable nga gusto rag palami pero di modawat sa responsibilidad nga mao unyay resulta sa palami.

for every sad economic story of big families that are bursting at the seams, there's also a story of big families who have conquered the odds.

naa koy kaila nga 13 sila nga anak.  marginal fisherman ang amahan, housewife and inahan.  each child was precious to the parents.  puro nakahuman ug college tanan.  unbelievable.  giunsa nila pag-invest ug education?  kada naay mahuman, mogasto dayon sa sunod manghod.  kay puro kugihan, hamugaway na ron silang tanan.

they did not rue the day their parents chose to let them live, they did not blame each other for being born.  rather, they looked at themselves as assets that worked for their mutual gains.

the philippine catholic church, in a pastoral letter earlier this year, expressed wonder why countries desperate for babies because of below zero replacement fertility rates spend huge sums to encourage their population to increase as they spend huge sums to stop the population growth of countries such as ours.

such moves call to mind the 1974 national security study memorandum 200 of henry kissinger that claims that the increase of world population is harmful to the interests of the west.  considering the state of replacement fertility rates of first world countries, the population increase being referred to here must be that of third world countries such as ours.  simply put, our population growth is not good for western countries. that could be the reason why they are funding our population control program.  it is not for us.  it is for them.

-(data from ‘A Catechism on Family and Life for the 2010 Elections’ and Wikipedia)

#42316
bill clinton must be a believer of those nobel prize-winning economists who find no correlation between population growth and poverty.  these are the economists who claim that human capital is the ultimate resource.

Kini daw atong ipangutana sa atong kaugalingon...

Are you a mistake? Would the Philippines have been better off kung wa paka ipanganak sa imong ginikanan kay daghan na jamo ta?

If you are then I rest my case.

If not, is it right to say, "Kining kalibutan o Filipinas" para ra ba ni nato (nga gipanganak na or our kind nga maka afford mobuhi ug bata)? Or, even to say "Para ra ni sa atong mga anak? Apan dili para sa uban, who don't deserve to have babies or don't deserve to be babies? Tsk tsk tsk... tao nga naman.  ???

VS

"self-control" "immoralidad " "family planning" etc, bwahahaha!!!  ;D

;D Gawas na lang kung buotan jud na sila sa sila pay mga batan-on... then THEY have the right to form an opinion against this stand or statement!!!

If not, then you're no different from these who keep on making babies, or making mistakes!!!

On my part, padayon kos akong pagtoo nga "babies are no mistake."  :P

What a turnaround then for a Democrat President - a political group which espouses abortion - to finally say "babies are not liabilities, but assets for the country... and for the world in general."  ;)

yeheee!  this is what i have believed in all along... having been born and being thankfully alive today do not give me the privilege to decide on who else will be born or not.  otherwise, what's the use of believing in a higher power?

aren't some of us here at tb from big families?  aren't we thankful that despite everything, we have become what we are?  do we not trust the strength of the human spirit that can tackle all challenges?

why should the solutions to economic problems involve the control of births and lives when it has been said many times over that the solution lies in political will that could lead to the equitable distribution of resources?

ah, in ader words, one can forget to wear one's pants but not one's name because the horse has a name?  remember, the horse has no pants, so the act of remembering in this case will have no meaning.

He he, sense-wise, it can equally go either way. I was just thinking offhand that it would be more "natural" to NOT remember your name under the circumstances (especially if one were on a horse with no name). Then again, onsi kantot, the deprivation could very well give free rein to the persistence of memory...

;D

you mean, if the horse had a name, the chances are greater that you CAN remember your name?

A Horse With No Name
(band: America, music: Bunnell-Dewey)

On the first part of the journey,
I was looking at all the life.
There were plants and birds. and rocks and things,
There was sand and hills and rings.
The first thing I met, was a fly with a buzz,
And the sky, with no clouds.
The heat was hot, and the ground was dry,
But the air was full of sound.

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

After two days, in the desert sun,
My skin began to turn red.
After three days, in the desert fun,
I was looking at a river bed.
And the story it told, of a river that flowed,
Made me sad to think it was dead.

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

After nine days, I let the horse run free,
'Cause the desert had turned to sea.
There were plants and birds, and rocks and things,
There was sand and hills and rings.
The ocean is a desert, with its life underground,
And a perfect disguise above.
Under the cities lies, a heart made of ground,
But the humans will give no love.

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name,
It felt good to be out of the rain.
In the desert you can remember your name,
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.

La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la
La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

sa laing bahin, kun tinuod man ni kintahay, kulang-kulang gyod tingali ning atong vice-president.

power is a great aphrodisiac.  kun ang trabaho ni binay pareha pa sa una nga roomboy ug motel nga tigdala ug planggana sa mga kwarto, molingi ba kaha tawon ning babayhana niya?  in other words, dili siya ang gisugot kun di ang iyang trabaho.

kinsa man sad kahang lakiha ang ganahan nga duolon lang ug baye tungod sa unsay iyang trabaho ug sulod sa iyang bulsa?  well, if power corrupts... ma-corrupt sad ug apil ang ego sa laki.  pustahan, since he achieved power, nagtoo gyod na si binay nga gwapo siya.  uroy ba...

Good to see that the Philippines is enforcing its laws , especially taking terrorist threats seriously. If this woman was in the United States and said that in American Soil in American airport premises, she would not only have been surrounded by American security, and anti-terrorist task squads within the airports. And subject to heavy punishment. This country is intolerant of terrorist threats.

How very unbecoming. She would joke like that in front of her countrymen and in front of her child. Does she not know the psychological processes of observational learning? Stupidity!

You reap what you sow. And she sowed idiocy, she reaps the justice of Philippine Law! Good!

it was indeed idiocy, and its consequence, according to this statement, is that she got the idiocy of philippine law in equal measure.  in which case, a filipino some years back was also slapped with the idiocy of american law.  when the plane he was on was approaching a u.s. airport, he joked through his mobile phone to someone meeting him at the airport about the bomb he was carrying.  well, all calls were being monitored in the u.s. (bush era; i don't know now), so he never got past the airport's door.

Now I am making egg roll for a retirement party of one of the Bossmen upon special request. It became famous in our office when I started bringing it during cook-out or parties. I don't make it, Cujo did. She made the best egg roll ever. Then, I was guilty of the compliments, so I asked her to give me her recipe. Since then I was making my own.

THANKS CUJO!

hehe, a topic close to my heart.  if there's no trade secret involved, mind sharing the recipe here?

seriously, the banana republic and i have realized that jokes about bohol were started by boholanos themselves.  if anything, he once said, boholanos have a strong sense of humor and are quick to laugh at themselves, and it's healthy. :D

the banana republic is a pure cebuano.  i claim to be pure boholana though he believes otherwise because i could not make the cut in terms of 'jus soli'.  besides, i've spent most of my life in cebu.  let it be said though that i insist i'm more boholana than anything else.

one can imagine the bohol-cebu dynamics between us then.  though our exchanges have not turned nasty, they have become part of our game, to be enjoyed and laughed at.

he says, she says:

ang bol-anon kun mangihi moatubang gyod sa bohol.  (obviously with allusions to muslims who face mecca when they pray.)

he enjoys knowing boholano family names and how funny some are, and names them... (i won't name them here; you know what they are.)

i'm ready with my own list, naturally... camomot, bugtai, cabahug, jumao-as (with apologies to those who may carry these names; or are apologies necessary here? ;))

it goes without saying that we can't expect everyone to recognize everybody else.  there are occasions when such faux pas can be avoided by having a color-coded i.d. or ribbon, but then again it would have been a worse faux pas if a country's vice-president were required to use this.  some coordination between the reception's protocol and clinton's close-in security broke down somewhere.  i hope no one loses a job because of this.  anyway, the fact that veep binay was cool about it spoke of the man.  he didn't need to shout that he's the country's vice-president.

far off, but somewhat similar, was my experience in my own home.  someone knocked.  i opened the door and, lo and behold, a stranger of a woman who denied me even the slightest polite greeting surprised me with her purpose:  "i want to talk to the lady homeowner.  what time is she coming home?"  well, since she concluded that i wasn't there, i gave it to her in equal measure.  i don't know when she's coming back, i answered, and closed the door on her face. ;D

grabeh!  i'm every other asian national except filipino.  i've been japanese, vietnamese, chinese, thai, and lately, indonesian.

once, in a mideast country, the banana republic and i waited for his car service in a lobby where there was a group of filipinos waiting for their bus service to their workplace.  when the banana left, i turned to them to say hello.  they weren't very welcoming.  they only looked at me as if i came from another planet.  so i told them that like them, i'm a filipino (i knew they were filipinos because they were speaking tagalog.)  weird.  they even doubted my own declaration.

"bakit iba ang salita niyo," someone asked.
"we were speaking cebuano," i said.
"ah, bisaya pala."
"yes, and you must not expect all filipinos to speak tagalog only," i answered, already pissed off with the way the word 'bisaya' was dropped.
"akala kasi namin, japanese ka at yung asawa mo ay arabo."
