What is happening in the United States is the introduction of Spanish as a second language in the classroom, considering the rising Spanish-speaking population in the 'states. Proficiency in Spanish and other languages only adds to the color of American society, imho.

This country is a melting pot of different cultures, languages, races, ethnicities. You name it, we've got it.

Open mindedness is best for the 'states. Especially considering the rising immigrant population.

Pero, we must not be so quick to acquiesce to any woman that comes to our feet.

Finding the right woman is like finding the best apple in the apple tree.

Be selective pood.

But of course, Tita.

For me, I learn and read the Sacred Scripture, and it is supplemented in attendance in Holy Mass sa Church.

As what my pastor always tells me in our private conversation, 'Read scripture, apply it in your daily life. Hold true to the sacraments. Christ will guide, that is guaranteed.'

Thank you for sharing your view, Tita Lee. Appreciate it.

This is the beauty of faith. Faith does not need explanation, it just is.
The fact that the beauty of science only adds to the mystique and brilliance of the Lord--and solidifies one's faith.

I submit, The Lord works in mysterious ways. And His ways are above our knowing.

The detractory aspect is the difference in pay, tho.

A physician who completes medical training, completes his residency and is offered an Attending position can make anywhere from $300,000-$400,000 (ER,InternalMed,Radio,FamPrac) or from $700,000-1Million + (General Surgery/Orthopaedics/NeuroSurg)

So,

Naturally a pay in the corp of $80,000 is a huge pay cut as compared to what he/she will be making in private service.

But depends on the individual; depends on their particular area of expertise.

In the private sector, we are in demand for more general medical care; in the Armed Forces--they are in demand of Surgeons, and specialties.

I've considered it. The United States has a program for medical students; where upon graduation from medical school--if the graduate signs up for the Medical Corp in the United States Army, he or she will start of as a Lieut. in the corp. The United States Army will "forgive" all loans for Medical School, which means about $200,000-$300,000 worth of Medical School loan debt will be covered.

The Corp will grant the physician-soldier a pay rate of $80,000 starting. Complete coverage.

And if the physician-surgeon finishes active duty, can proceed to private/public practice. With no debt, and comes out experienced in battlefield care.

I have a classmate who is already in this program; his tuition is completely covered; expenses covered and the US Army not only pays for his tuition, expenses, but also gives him a monthly stipend of $2000.

A good deal, I think.

That is why we should always ask The Lord to be with us in each and every single day. From the moment we wake up, to the moment we sleep at night, we should always Thank Him. Thank Him for the things he has done for us, either we know it or not, he has us in His mind and has a plan for each and everyone.

Bahala ug datu ka or ug pobre ka, dili man na matter. Ang importante is that you give Him thanks and Glorify Him in all you do.

Dili man jud buta atong Ginoo.

Datu ug Pobre, God is above and we are always lower and underneath Him.
As quick as he gives us success and confidence, he can also take away. We are completely under his mercy.
#41528
Yes, Glacier. These festivals either they be Sinulog, Fiesta de Virgen de Guadalupe (In Mexico), Fiesta de La Nino Jesu Cristo (In Spain) or etc, are but visuals. A visual cortex for us in the present--of how the FAITH was spread in the past, as not everyone in the past was literate or knew how to read the bible, which was written in Latin.

The Christian Faith, for the longest time, was spread through word of Mouth. Through the Ministry of the ONE and HOLY Roman Catholic Church.

That is why Tradition, for the Catholic, is equivalent and supplementary to the Written Scriptural Word. As even BEFORE the Bible was compiled by the Holy Roman Catholic Church (And yes, it was the Catholic Church that compiled the Holy Bible), it was tradition by mouth and by physical means that proliferated the faith.

Everything in Catholic Ministry, be it the Adoration of the Gospel, The Crucifix, The proliferation and witness to the Sacraments, are but part of that Tradition. Which has been handed down from generation to generation, since the time of the first Christians who heard from the Apostles themselves. Thus, it is why our traditions, are One and APOSTOLIC.

Though the Church be in different corners of the world, the unifying feature is its Tradition and Scriptural Word.

We were all sinners before the light and word of God came to us, the Church teaches that, BUT, by Grace and by Grace alone--through the ministry of the Church--which helps facilitates the understanding of the promises of Christ and by the Word of Scripture--it is then and only then are we saved.

Everyone has a bad past, but our present and future have not come yet.

Of course, one should help his brother and sister in need. Pero there should be no shame if one is successful or is wealthy.

If one is successful and wealthy--it is the reward of hard work. Hard work that should be the substance of every individual.

Christ and His Father in Heaven did not give us a spirit of laziness, a spirit of timidity, but a spirit, of Power, Confidence and Understanding.

When the Apostles were touched by the Holy Spirit in Pentecost, and were filled with conviction to spread the faith, they applied reason and justice in preaching their word. Apostle John as well as Simon Peter (The Rock) went to Rome to preach the word.

Did they condone radical revolution or did they preach the faith in ways to be accepted in that particular society? They did the latter.

Apostle John, preached to slaves, preached in the games, preached in the streets of Rome. Peter, The Blessed who Holds the Keys to the Gates of Heaven, preached in the catacombs of Rome. They preached in Latin, the lingua franca of the Romans.

Though their manner of ministry changed to suite the city, their conviction and faith were undaunted.

When John was condemned to death by Nero, he was brought to the Colosseum in Rome and was placed in a pot of boiling oil. Do you know what John did? While he was led to the pot of oil, he preached the WORD to the Romans in Latin. His eyes and words were affixed to Christ's word and promise. And do you know what happened? Miraculously, John did not die in the pot of boiling oil.

They took him out of the pot of oil, and ye continued to preach and minister. So much that the entire Roman Colloseum converted to Christianity on the spot. Note that he was not speaking to the audience in Aramaic (the language of Jesus), but in Latin.

The miracle of Conversion into Christianity did not come through forced conversion by the sword, but by the appliance and molding local culture to accept the Word of Christianity--to bring comprehension of THE WORD to the locals, who did not know Christ prior.

Per se the Adoration of the Blessed Santo Nino, the Blessed Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico etc is what bridges the indigenous culture to the greater understanding Umbrella--that is The Holy Roman Catholic Church.

And by the Grace of God, conversion was quick and superfluous. In full Communion with Christ, by Authority of His Holy and One Church.

In His Name,

Tito,

My father always tells me, "All success and achievement comes after hard work, sacrifice, blood, toil, sweat, and Faith in God."

The man who achieves success, yet is humble enough to acknowledge ang Ginoo everyday for their blessings and gives Glory to God before himself, is a man much to be admired and followed.

Especially kaning quote that teaches us:

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.  Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:  So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

Again, being rich or well to do means one has worked and deserved success. It is a gift from God Almighty, who has blessed them for their pains and work ethic. By the Grace of God. Blessed is a man who is rich and well-to-do, yet has the faith and word of GOD in his mouth.

"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life."

If we look and call on His Name, he will surely come there for us.

Man shall not live by bread alone,

But by every word

That proceeds from the mouth of God

Alleu, Alleuia

Ask and it shall be given unto you,

Seek and ye shall find.

Knock and the door shall be opened onto you.

Alleu, Alleuia

Seek ye first the kingdom of God

Lyrics:

I am the bread of life
He who comes to Me shall not hunger
He who believes in Me shall not thirst
No one can come to Me
Unless the Father draw him

And I will raise him up
And I will raise him up
And I will raise him up on the last day

The bread that I will give
Is My flesh for the life of the world
And he who eats of this bread
He shall live for ever
He shall live for ever

Unless you eat
Of the flesh of the Son of Man
And drink of His blood
And drink of His blood
You shall not have life within you

I am the resurrection
I am the life
He who believes in Me
Even if he die
He shall live for ever

Yes, Lord, we believe
That You are the Christ
The Son of God
Who has come
Into the world

Tita,

As of right now I am scheduled to begin my clinical rotations by Spring of 2010 in hospital systems in and around Chicago, Illinois. But I and others in my batch are trying to do our core rotations in either Chicago, Philly or NYC.

But I am interested in completing my elective rotations (neuro, orthopaedics, radiology, gastro etc) abroad. The affiliated teaching schools abroad include UK schools, Tel Aviv Medical Health Systems as well as other sites. One site that I'm interested in is Royal Perth Hospital Systems in Australia. I have friends over there that are doing their elective rotations there. Once they finish their rotations there for their electives, they'll begin to take step 3 of the USMLE boards. Benefits of going abroad for elective rotations is because some of the western hospitals abroad are advanced in different techniques; for example in Australia--there are new procedures there for Advanced Angioplasty--for Cardiology interns. One friend of mine is in Royal Perth finishing his 6 month clinical rotation for cardio over there.

Australia's medical system is an exact copy of the US health system; we have similar regulations and most of all; similar board exams for Medicine/Surgery.

If I do end up taking my elective rotations in Australia, I will tell you beforehand.

Cheers to that~

I would like to know how you define a long penis?
I don´t think the length is a vital factor. The age of a man is the most important thing to consider because of its high quality of sperm and virility.

Ondoy Lorenzo unsa man ang pag -gauge ni-ani?

Tita Tess,

You are so correct, ma'am.

As we age, degeneration will occur. A man in his 50s will probably have sperm that don't have enough mitochondria in the neck of the sperm to provide enough ATP for the migration; or some sperm will have mutation in the cilia (tail) of the sperm--affecting its migratory pattern of length of swimming time.

As compared to a young male in his 20s-30s. For men, the best age to sire offspring is in his 20s or his 30s.

#41565
Health and Food / Re: Smarter Men Have More Sperm
January 21, 2009, 06:08:00 AM
That is a myth.

The size or length of a man's penis does not determine the sex of a child.
To understand this mechanism, we have to understand biochemistry and embryology.

The mother supplies the oovum, which has an XX genotype. The father is what determines the sex of the child. A fetus becomes a girl if the father supplies a sperm that is XX--thereby in process of morphogenesis--develops an XX genotype. XX being female and XY being male.

Now if the father provides a sperm that is XY genotypic; the fetus that will develop will be a boy.

Naturally, a fertile male will excrete about 50-100 million sperms in 2 mL of ejaculate. Its a ration of 1:1 regarding spermatic genotype.

The determination of the sex of a child relies primarily on chance. It depends on the fastest sperm and the sperm who can rip through the oovum's protein barrier first.

Thus we have the manifest of either a male or female child.

King Solomon the Wise, most favored of God.

One woman said: "By your leave, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth in the house while she was present.
18
On the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. We were alone in the house; there was no one there but us two.
19
This woman's son died during the night; she smothered him by lying on him.
20
Later that night she got up and took my son from my side, as I, your handmaid, was sleeping. Then she laid him in her bosom, after she had laid her dead child in my bosom.
21
I rose in the morning to nurse my child, and I found him dead. But when I examined him in the morning light, I saw it was not the son whom I had borne."
22
The other woman answered, "It is not so! The living one is my son, the dead one is yours." But the first kept saying, "No, the dead one is your child, the living one is mine!" Thus they argued before the king.
23
Then the king said: "One woman claims, 'This, the living one, is my child, and the dead one is yours.' The other answers, 'No! The dead one is your child; the living one is mine.'"
24
The king continued, "Get me a sword." When they brought the sword before him,
25
he said, "Cut the living child in two, and give half to one woman and half to the other."
26
The woman whose son it was, in the anguish she felt for it, said to the king, "Please, my lord, give her the living child--please do not kill it!" The other, however, said, "It shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide it!"
27
The king then answered, "Give the first one the living child! By no means kill it, for she is the mother."
28
When all Israel heard the judgment the king had given, they were in awe of him, because they saw that the king had in him the wisdom of God for giving judgment.

Lessons from Chapter I:

Money is not taught in Schools. Schools focus on scholastic and professional skills, but not on financial skills. This explains how smart bankers, doctors and accountants who earned excellent grades in school may still struggle financially all of thier lives.

Poor dad say: I cant afford it
Rich dad say: How can I afford it?
Once is a statement and the other is a question. The rich dad explains that by saying "I cant afford it" your brain stops working, it is a sign of mental laziness.

Poor dad thought that the rich should pay more taxes to take care of those less fortunate.
Rich dad said, Taxes punish those who produce and reward those who dont produce.

Poor dad recommended, Study hard so you can find a good company to work for.
Rich dad recommended, Study hard so you can find a good company to buy.

Poor dad said, "The reason I'm not rich is because I have you kids" (because of expenses)
Rich dad said, "The reason I must be rich is because I have you kids."

Poor dad said, when it comes to money, play it safe, dont take risk.
Rich dad said, "Learn to manage risk"

more to come....

I really liked that excerpt, "Learn to manage risk."

I can hear my dad already echoing something in the likes of, "Managing your study habits." haha!

In fact, I can hear his voice say that.

All in all, great thread, Mr. Ferniz.

It cannot be hidden from the world of the mastery and proficiency of the FILIPINO.

When I go to any hospital or any intensive care clinic, I can hold my head up high because I will immediately see that the D.O.N (Director of Nursing) is going to be Filipino/Filipina. The Physician-Surgeon staff is going to be composed of a significant amount of Filipinos speaking in perfect english. Why even if the Filipino medical professional retains his or her Filipino accent, his or her proficiency in that language is brilliant.

But that proficiency is secondary to the absolute mastery and dedication the Filipino Nurse and/or Filipino Doctor in the floor.

When the patient comes to the hospital for an ailment. They will see the Filipino, enrobed in the scrubs, white coat and surrender their care to that professional.

You see this in here in the USA, in Canada and I assure you also in the EU.

When you go to the hospital, or when you even think of the medical professional. Only one asian group dominates that field and it is either the Filipino or the Indian national.

God BLESS the Filipino!

I salute all of you my kababayans!

The Philippines out competes any other Asian country, imho.

The Philippine Society is-western friendly; in fact there are even historians who would argue that the Philippines is WESTERN on basis of culture.

We are one of the few nations in Asia where English is a major language. Proficiency of said language is rather high and most Filipinos speak English, as compared to other ASEAN member states or other nations in Asia-Pacific.

A century ago, even, the Filipino was proficient and fluent in Spanish. Another Western language, albeit, a Latin Romance language instead of the Germanic English.

This is why the Filipino adapts so perfectly in Western Societies. Either it be in The United States, or in Europe or even in Latin America.

History has prejudiced him to that aspect.

General Topic / Morality VS Practicality
January 21, 2009, 04:47:41 AM
Morality: it has been claimed it's really nothing more then 'learned behavior'; Is it? or is the associated claim of divine inspiration involved as well? What is morality in the 21st century? It's certainly not that necessarily of the 10th. Is it, at it's base, really just simply standards of conduct, intertwined with personal responsibility and identity of purpose, insofar as understanding right vs. wrong?

And for that matter is morality only then superficial? Or is it genuine?

What then can we say vs. practicality... is morality merely a practical vehicle to be used when and how we see it serves our best personal and or group issues, concerns and requirements to maintain a cohesive society? Or is there a deeper concept about identity of nation states less the well worn usage of the term ethnicity or nationalism. Can there be a 'morale yet practical state?

General Topic / Philosophy Comes Full Circle
January 21, 2009, 04:40:34 AM
I read about the Ancient Greeks and emphasis on satisfying treatment of the Epicurians and the Stoics. On basis of Greek Philosophy:

So it seems that Philosophy first rejected the gods, then searched for the perfect state and justice, then searched for a means to find happiness, and failing all that, returned to God. How do you like that!

Interesting, eh?   ;)

Australia is so BEAUTIFUL!

Tita, do you know where Brisbane is? One of my classmates is from Brisbane, she's studying medicine here and wants to practice back in Australia or here in the USA.

The thing that is really interesting is that the Board Exams for Medicine here in the states is the same as in Australia.

We all take the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exams); which are also accepted in Australia.

There are even American med students who choose to do their neurology, peds (pediatric) and radiology or extracurricular rotations abroad. Some doing it in Green-Schools in Australia. Some of our 4th year students are actually doing their clinical rotations at Royal Perth Hospital in Australia. Some also are doing their clinicals in the UK (Gloucestershire).

Australia has really good Internal Medicine Teaching Programs, I hear.

Talk of the Town / Re: Spike of Rice Price in Bohol
January 21, 2009, 04:13:42 AM
This will only naturally occur, considering the rising population. Demand of the resource will only manifest.

Of course, to augment the demand, production of rice by rice-producing countries (The US, Thailand, the Philippines, China, India etc) will occur.

Now, we have a predicament here.

Rice paddies and rice plant produces methane gas. Methane, is also a green house gas.

This is a predicament debated within the environmental science forum as we speak. Do we acquiesce to the demands of the rising population and increase rice output and allow the production of methane (in response) OR do we ignore the demand for increased rice production to minimize and check methane levels in the atmosphere?

Inspirational for me to meet physicians who are so strong in their faith. Dr. Jensen is a peculiar man, 'te. He has a strong and firm handshake. I can feel his resolve.

It is touching to know that a man who can be so resolved, can also have so much faith in The Lord.

I would love to read that book, 'te. :)

There is a General Surgeon in the hospital, Dr. Jensen, who prays before every surgery he goes to. And after surgery, he also prays. Even if the patient survives or does not. He still prays afterwards.

I was so humbled to see that.

Very good that you're feeling better now, pare.

Sigoro it was just a slight infection. Fever, muscle pain and tonsils enlargment as well as soreness of throat are nothing but symptoms of your immune system in over-drive; meaning it is fighting the infection of the antigens in your body (bacteria or viral infection).

An enlarged tonsil means your lymph nodes are in full activity--filtering lymph and secreting leukocytes, eosinophils, erythorcytes in your blood system. That is why your tonsil was enlarged (pallatino tonsils are nothing but a lymph node in the oral tract on the base of the soft palate ).

You got better in 2 days. Wow! You must have excellent immune system. Or your wife knows how to make really good homeopathic foods to augment the treatment.

:) :)

It is going to be spring soon, pare, so allergy will be natural. (Ako galing i'm getting sick and am taking claritin right now to suppress symptoms of my allergy). I've been taking 1000 mg of Ascorbic Acid (Vit C) to augment my immune system.

I recommend you do so, pare, as you are just recovering from infection.

Cheers,
Bran

Inspiration & Hope / Re: The Will to Survive
January 21, 2009, 12:09:03 AM
Man has the will to survive by the grace of The Father. Who molded the worlds out of nothingness. Whose righteous right arm forgives Sin. Whose LOVE unchallenged sent his only Son, Christ Jesus, to conquer Sin and Death. For the salvation of our eternal souls.

Man, who is made in the image of the Eternal Father. Is naturally and innately willed to survive. To survive is to clench life, to hold and yearn life. Life, that Our Father gave us.

It is the created's natural instinct to hold onto the gift of the CREATOR.

O Eternal God, O compassionate, merciful Father, have pity on us who are blind, deprived of all light. With that glance of compassion whereby You have created us and all things, look upon the needs of this world and provide for them. You gave us being out of nothingness; enlighten, then, this being which belongs to You.

Amen.

O Sweetest Father, I beseech You to have mercy on the world and on Your holy Church. Do not delay any longer: yield to and fulfill the desire of Your servants. It is You who bid them to cry out; listen, then, to their voice! Your Truth has told us: ask and You shall receive; seek and You shall find; knock and it shall be opened to You. O Eternal Father, Your servants cry out for Your mercy: do respond to them.

"You can't treat everything, there will be things that will confuse you, some disease that will be mis-diagnosed, some patients that cannot be saved. "

So said Dr. Raj, my professor for Clinical Neuroanatomy. To know that you will have patients who will come to you for a problem/ailment, and knowing that there will be probably nothing you can do to treat the disease--just the symptoms.

We were given lists of clinical diseases related to vitamin deficiency as well as neurological-related diseases.

We were given a break after an hour of lecture, and I spent my 20 minute break talking with some mates on the matter. "How would we react to that predicament?"

I listened to their responses; some were honorrific, some were pessimistic, some were just down right crude.

But to tell you the truth--I really wouldn't know. I don't know how I would feel regarding a patient that was in 'End-Stage', or a patient who was terminal and not knowing he was terminal.

And I've been thinking about this for some time today after class. I read the readings for the day, but that declaratory statement Dr. Raj provided us kept on ticking me.
Finally I took a break and ran into this verse in Scripture:
"Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity."
Hebrews 5:2

I would do all in my power, medically speaking, to treat that patient. And keep him comfortable in his end-stage. It's hard sometimes keeping a distance from patients, retaining your distance and emotional concern. We must lean not on our understandings alone, but on the grace of The LORD and on his righteous arm.

That I am confident of.
