Culturally and socially their practice is understandable in their viewpoint. I have classmates who are Indian and utilize such creams. Their culture, their way of life.
#41003
In India, they also apply cow dung on their faces--in the more traditional villages--local custom dictates that cow dung is an good anti-aging cream as well as an anti-oxidant.

In consequence, there is also a high epidemic rate in India as well as the world's largest HIV rate--in the Asian Subcontinent.

Lorenzo

September 2004

This was taken when I was just moving in to my dormitory in Allegheny College.
My parents took my baby bros to Conneaut Lake.

When I see this picture, I realize how much my brothers have grown.

5 years went that fast?

Summer of 2006.

I went canoeing with Bryan, and Don by Conneaut Lake by Crawford County.

It was my first time Don and I went kayaking; soon as we got on the canoe, we rammed into the wooden port.

The canoe bent forward and Don, who sat on the back, flew in the air and hit water.

LOL!

I couldn't stop laughing for 20 minutes. Furious with me, came after me, and as he tried to pull me under, he stepped on some lake grass and slipped yet again--face first into the water.

I hurried out of the water. Don tried chasing after. Then we heard Bryan yell, "Idiots! The Canoe is sinking!!"

LOL!!!

It took Don, Bryan and I about 40 some minutes to bring the canoe back to the surface---from 9 feet deep water. hahahahaha

I will cherish that experience forever.

And yes, we did end up canoeing afterwards. :P

Lorenzo your correct! Reintroducing Spanish in our public high school will help to reawaken our cultural identity. We cannot deny it, Spain brought to us the Judeo-Helenistic culture from the West as the Iberian Peninsula ( Now Portugal and Spain ) once conquered by Rome. But the Spaniards never complained that psyche has been diminished because they were once governed by other races as they were also subdued by the Moors for long 800 years!
Yes, we were much ahead from other countries because of our historical past. Now, we can stride ahead of them if we just recognize the truth, let's look at our historical past with deep since of gratitude. Busca es verdad encontra Dios!

It was our direct link to Western Europe through the umbilical cord of Spain that spearheaded the enlightenment revolution of Filipinos. During the early 19th century and even in the late 18th centuries, Filipinos were already studying abroad in Europe. Studying in the finest universidades y collegios in SPAIN.

Who else can boast such accomplishments in Asia? Aside from the Filipino? No One.

Spanish Philippines was the envy of Asia in the 17th-19th centuries. To solidify this is the Western notion of regarding The Philippines (Las Filipinas) as the "Pearl Of The Orient"

No other nation in Asia-Pacific can boast of cultural Romanization. The strengths of the Filipino and the Philippines is our Europeanized Culture. A Latinized Culture.

What do you mean by this? Are we actually better-off because of this?
Considering we Filipinos have a Hispanic Culture and are part of the Latin Family, of course. We are not possible without Hispanic Presence. It is a cultural manifest that is absolutely integral to one's own identity.

One cannot simply erase Half a Millenia of Hispanization.

Por Supuesto,

I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,

Say to the Lord, "My Refuge,

                              Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.

The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
                        And famine will bring you no fear;
                        Under His Wings your refuge,
                        His faithfulness your shield.

                              Refrain

You need not fear the terror of the night,
Nor the arrow that flies by day,
                        Though thousands fall about you,
Near you it shall not come.

                              Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.

For to His angels He's given a command,
To guard you in all of your ways,
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

                              Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,

Blown like smooth dunes, by the wind overnight,
the crusted snow glistened in the morning sun's light.
The brilliance danced on the canvas I viewed;
I stood in awe - all faith renewed.
Untouched by man, this scenic vision
proved Nature's pallette conquered her mission.
The winter scene won the artist a prize
for it dazzled and kept the focus of my eyes.
Her magic she wove all through the night -
Nature's painting complete to view in daylight.

When the ice coats all, from freezing rain,

and it's a feat to stay aloft,

The birds still have to find their food;

and it shows that they aren't soft.

I filled my feeder awhile ago

and was trying to move some ice;

A chicadee came up so close to me;

chirping "Me, me, me" - So nice!

It was a moving "thank you" -

one I won't forget;

Such a little thing for me to do

and yet a reward I did net.

He came back with his family

and other birds he'd told;

They chattered and sang and gave thanks, too;

and made me warm - not cold.

They gave me strength to scrape the ice,

while they chirped their songs to me;

If that is all I accomplish today,

it was a time to remember and "just be".

Your eyes can heal whatever's wrong,
can chase the hurt or fear.
The understanding look they give
can wipe away each tear.
Your smile turns winter into spring
and roses bloom for me.
That tenderness that shows you care
is all that I can see.
These things are free like the moon and stars
- a smile, a gentle touch -
And to me it is these little things
that mean so very much.

I also remember a story my dad told me:

When my dad was only a little boy (he was the eldest in his family), Mama Luz and Papa Ting (my grandparents) would make sure all of the kids would sleep and have a nap time. One time kono, Daddy woke up from his nap and tried to slide from the bed to sneak away from the bedroom to play downstairs. As he opened the door kono, ingoon to si Mama Luz ni Daddy, "Rico, balik dinhi. Tug na ta."

hahahahaha.

:P

And now, my dad and my mom make sure my little baby brother Andre has a nap time with them. When Don-Don was also a little boy, he would have a nap time with my dad. The dreaded, "5 minutes" hahaha. Lingaw kaayo.

Angel (my younger sister) and Jing Jing (my 1st degree cousin) used to play next to Mama Luz. When we came back from Bohol Wisdom School, mo adto baja mi sa balay ni Mama Luz. Ingoon man to si Angel ni Mama Luz, "Kamusta man ka Mama Luz" in her very thick bisaya accent sa una. Mama Luz would kiss her with her cheeks. Then taga'an mi ug pandesal and coke. Hahaha.

Or sometimes, when Mama Luz was eating ginamos, mo kaun pood si angel sa iyahang ginamos, hahaha. Hand fed si Angel sa iyang Mama Luz. Our grandmother.

Mao sigoro na 4'11 si Angel, pariho ni Mama Luz kai gi hand fed man to sija niya. Pinangga baya to si Angel ni Mama Luz..

Am against the legalization of marijuana. It is an addictive drug. Too many of our American youth are falling to its sway, especially in the high schools and even in the college level. It's destructive because it decreases mental focus; and translates in poor scores in schools.

People who use this recreationally are self destructive. Marijauan is a transitional drug; meaning people who smoke it will most likely try other drugs per se methamphetamine, Heroin, LSD, etc. One leads to another. Medical statistics indicates this relationship.

Marijuana is illegal here in the 'states.

Again, In hospice facilities, terminal patients are permitted (through special clauses) to have morphine drips as well as marijuana for purposes of relieving pain. In such cases, terminal patients are either suffering from full blown malignancies, congestive heart failure (CHF), renal failure, etc. Thus, the intake of marijuana is understandable for said populations.

However, for those taking the drug recreational, is violation of US Federal Law. And can be punishable by law. It is a Federal Offense.

Marijuana is illegal in the United States, 'te.

It is only used in special medical cases, per se those who are cancer patients. Then again there are specific clauses on specific states that can apply such.

It's a hallucinogenic drug, just like any Amphetamines (Methamphetamine).

Marijuana leads to psychotomimetic, psychosis, altered state of mind. It's a destructive drug.

It is, biochemically speaking, a subtype of hallucinogenic family. Which is unhealthy for any individual. The dispensal of said drug to terminal patients is for palliative treatment and care. Where the onset of death is inevitable, unfortunately.

Marijuana is so destructive for you. It causes fibromyelinzation of the lung tissues. Which leads to, helps in the formation of neoplasms.

Smoking of any kind, is never a good thing. Especially cannabis (marijuana) because it is a neuroinhibitor. It's a hallucinogenci drug. Yet long term smoking, like cigarette smoking will lead to fibromyelinzation. Fibromyelinzation is the first step to the onset of cancer. Every cancer has a fibromyelinzation step before it explodes in full blown malignancy.

Lorenzo

It went well, Thanks be to God, we were allotted 15 minutes to present our cases, but I ended up going over 22 minutes. hahaha. I wanted to focus on the importance of the genetic defect on the BLM gene, which is a subtype of the DNA Helicase family--which is important for the DNA repair, replication, transcription processes. As a result of this, we see the obvious signs of clinical symptoms: High affinity for oncological onset (carcinoma), short stature, short limbs, low affinity for food, infertility for men, decreased fertility and reproductive span for women, etc.

The unfortunities of this syndrome is that there is no cure, no absolute treatment for the condition itself as it is a genetic one. We can, however, only provide symptomatic treatment.

Thanks for asking, mi companero. I thought I did alright, by God's Grace.

“Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.”

Romans 8:38-39 â€" “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The Lord grant peace and rest to the soul of the departed. She is asleep, and shall not hear anything until the day of the Resurrection, when all will rise to be judged by The Most High.

We pray, Lord, that justice be granted and be found.

We Ask this in the Name of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
From whom All Good Things Come.
Amen.

The Lord tells us, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he mediates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”
(Psalm 1: 1-3)

The Lord tells us again, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry; the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.”
(Psalm 34:15-20)

Angie, when one thinks about The Lord before he or she does something, definitely that individual, through his/ her faith, will surmount.

Ingoon man ang Our Lord, Jesus Christ, "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
-John 14:13-14

With God, anything is possible. The limitations are no longer limitations, but become possibilities. For there is no 'impossibility' with The Lord.

Why doctors pray? They pray because their source of inspiration, their source of anything and everything is from GOD.

Ako, I am only a 2nd term Medical Student, but my life revolves around God. There is no ifs, ands or buts about it. Especially in medical school where we live hour by hour, where a good 10 some hours of our day is spent in classes and reading, and doing rounds. Our only solace, mga higala, is GOD.

When we are studying for examinations and when all feels lost and if some concepts wont stick, it is by the GRACE of God that we are able to survive, able to surmount our testaments, and to fight another day.

Physicians who are very devout Christian are so because they survived the grueling years of medical school through prayer. I for one draw strength from prayer. I do believe in the power of prayer.

Lifestyles do not define the goodness in people. It might put us in danger. Some pinoy gud if naay event like sinulog "gimik didto, gimik diri" naa sa utok. Why not just minimize enjoyment. It's better tingali witness the parade, fireworks display, picnic with your family and friends. After the event back to business, work and school. Now fun is over your life becomes miserable.

Stay away from drugs, alcohol and different kind of sex affair.

"Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate when people say unkind things about you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God wants you to do, and He will bless you for it."  1 Peter 3:9

FBI,

Jesus told us, "Whoever is without sin, may cast the first stone." When the Pharisees were about to stone Mary Magdalene. And all of them, upon hearing Christ's Words, dropped their stones.

It correlates with Romans 3:23, "For All fall short from the Glory of God."

Thank you for sharing your piece of opinion. And in times like these, even if one is angered by a situation, it is always best to sit down, analyze the situation and plan a proper action, with ethics and conscience in mind. Violence begets Violence.

Christ told us, "Whoever lives by the sword, shall die by the sword."

God Bless You, FBI.

It was my impression that basic medical care was provided for by the Canadian Government. You have to provide for your own health care insurance as well?

The Anti-Hispanic notions of the past is a effect of American Presence in the Philippines. If you analyze this chronologically and Historically, you will all understand this.

When the Philippines was under Spain, every single Filipino Nativo knew how to read, speak, write in Castillian Spanish. It was the lingua Franca of the day. That is how people communicated with one another back then.

When the United States defeated Spain in 1898 after the Spanish-American War, America applied a policy of Manifest Destiny, which prioritized American legitimacy in the islands. And this policy required the Conqueror, The Americans, to repudiate Spanish presence and apply a negative illustration of the Spaniards before the Filipino Nativos.

American Protestantism grew in the islands, in an effort to uproot and change the Roman Catholicism that Spain had eternalized in the Philippines, a product of 400 years of Spanish presence in the islands.

But when the Americans took over the islands, they found to their surprise that the islands were pretty much, insofar, rather well established and internal infrastructure rather impeccable. The presence of Catholic Churches in every single town, the organization of the political structure in the islands from barangay/Barrio( Pueblo), to municipalidad, cuidad, provincia, regionalidad, y estada (singular national unit) was rather functioning.

So well ordered was the Philippines, again a product of 400 years of Pax Hispanica in the islands, that the United States maintained the status quo in the island. The United States only brought 3 things in the islands:

1) American Educational System
2) American political system
3) More Health facilities

Other than that, the level of Organization in the islands was noticable. Well structured, and worked.

The only way the Americans were to diminish Spain's obvious cultural and physical presence in the islands was to paint a negative view of the Spaniards in academic curriculum as well as to totally and changed the national language from Spanish to English.

An effort to Anglify a Hispanic Catholic Philippines.

100 Years to the day, the United States has not even eradicated Spain's cultural presence. Even 100 years after Spain's removal from the islands; the archipelago continue to pronounce Espana's cultural importance; the very name of our country is the name of Spain's Greatest Emperor. FELIPE, hence the term FILIPINAS.

The Philippine's action to reestablish Spanish into the curriculum is an effect, an evolutionary re-awakening of the Philippine's governmental sphere to the notion of PAX HISPANICA-FILIPINA.

That even after 100 years after independence, after the terrible pacific war, after the independence of the Philippines from America, and after the many attempts to illustrate Spain as the 'evil' one and the 'bad Catholic monster', blood cannot be erased.

The Maternal Link we have to Spain is indispensable and indisputable. 85% of the country remains ROMAN CATHOLIC (Thank you to Espana Madre).

The Link The Philippines has with Spain is a Maternal Bond. We are a product of Mother Spain.

Spanish is one of our 3 official languages, the other two is english and tagalog. We put  so much emphasis on these 2 foreign languages which left our tagalog out. It is a shame that our national tongue is not proficiently spoken nationwide.

Spanish is part of our identity. For half a Millenia we were part of the Spanish Empire, our culture is Hispanic and Latin.

Our religion, our faith, our cultural fiestas, our novelties, our psyche and way of thinking is Hispanic. Our fatalistic attitude is identical to Catholic Spain's. Why, even our surnames "apilidos" are Spanish.

Spain molded our identity, cultured it, there was no concept of a FILIPINO before Spain.

The Philippines is Spanish, Anglified, and some mixture of Oriental Culture.

But the underlying equivalency is our Hispanic Culture.

To Learn Spanish is to reconnect with our own identity. Our own history.

Respectfully,
Lorenzo

It's quite unusual. I just noticed that there's a direct relationship between thesis writing and TB posting. The more posts I have in TB (I am now a senior member), the more thoughts I acquired for my thesis. I am done with the most crucial part of my study which is the conceptualization of conceptual framework.

I just want to share the laughter guys. It's a very rare event. hahaha However, I know it won't work forever so I should give focus few minutes from now... :D :D :D

Jose,

The one reason why I grew 'addicted' to TB was because of the cameraderie of this site and the people in here. I was part of other forums in the past, but nothing can compare to this one because for one, this forum is my blood. Everyone in here is linked to Bohol, and as a son of Bohol--we are all  somehow interconnected. Somehow. Somehow and somewhere down the thousands of years we all probably share some kind of blood relation.

When I was also writing my bachelor's thesis for Biology last year, I documented everything here. I documented my research aspect, my data retrieval, pictures and photos of the processes and now a year later, I look back to that time when I was finishing my research paper with familial nostalgia.

I agree with you, the more I documented the processes in here, the more creative I got in lab and in the work itself.

I am now finishing my 2nd term of 1st year Medicine. This site provides an outlet for me. I can unwind in here, as like you and others.

God Speed on your research and thesis paper, Jose.

Best,
Lorenzo
