Adjusting Abroad: Personal Experiences
« on: February 02, 2009, 02:05:40 AM »
For those who are now living abroad, what were the kinds of problems you experienced during your transitional year to your host nation? How did you deal with such problems. And how do you like your new found land?

I arrived here in Canada July 18, 2006. That was about 3 weeks since my Nanay past away June 29, 2006. It feels like I was on the lowest point of my life. No other family except my husband and his Aunts and Uncles and cousins. No friends yet or Kababayan that I knew before. But I am thankful to have such a wonderful Aunts and Uncles and cousins. I consider them all as my second family.

Challenges:
1. homesick: Indescribable feeling how I missed my family so much
2.the cooking, I didn't know how to cook back home (now I am a good cook hehe ).
3. the winter, I cried during my first winter and said to my husband, I wanna go home.

Now, I am braver and stronger to accept challenges in life. Have faith and love, and most important, prayers.

Now I know that Glacier is outside Pinas, unsa man wa ko kaayo masayod sa uban kay adunay pseudo names.

I came in Europe 1981, we landed first in Zurich Switzerland. The snow was 4 m high and there was a deer in the side of the runway. We  proceeded to Dusseldorf Germany.
It was very cold but my in-laws were great.
I missed my friends and officemates in Davao City especially the radiodramas.
I was not able to adjust to potatos, i get stomach ache, especiall creams, tarts and cheese.
I enrolled myself to learn the German language.
After two years of marriage I got my divorce; cause is alcohol abuse of my ex-husband RIP, he died after that he was barely 33.
The rest is struggle, struggle and struggle.

My mom came to the 'states in '89. In 1991, she came back to bring my father, my sister Angel and myself to the 'states. It was January 1991 when we arrived. I remember it so clearly. My entire family and extended family were gathered in Tagbilaran Airport to see us go. That was the last time I saw my Mama Luz face to face. :'(
I can still remember my Nanay Mellie, I can still hear her voice and her embrace. Pinching my cheeks.
I can see my Lolo Ciano, who drove us to the Airport with his truck. He picked me up with his strong arm and gave me a big embrace.

We flew from Tagbilaran to Manila. And from Manila, to LA. From LA to JFK International in NYC.

I saw snow for the first time in my life. Tugnaw kaayo. I saw Americanos and Americanas, lol. I saw different people I've never seen before. Speaking in a different language (English).

When I arrived in the 'states I only spoke Bisaya and a little chinese (thanks to education from Bohol Wisdom School, lol).

I started kindergarten in St. Aloysius Elementary School in Queens, NYC. I had to learn English in the ESL Bus (English as a second language). And within 6 months time, I was already speaking english, writing in english, lol.

I saw my Ante Beth and Uncle Steve for the first time. They took us to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Oh man, i saw so many signs in english and i couldn't stop reading the signs, reading each street sign, couldn't stop saying hi to all the 'Americanos ug Americanas' hahaha.

Lonely man at first kai ako ug si Angel raman sa balay.

Man, the first time I arrived in the 'states I immediately wanted to go back home. Gi mingaw man ko ni Nanay Mellie, si Lolo ug si Mama Luz.

18 years ago. Almost 2 decades ago.

I arrived late January, peak of winter. There were snow all over but I felt so relaxed. I didn't wear any sweater indoors. hahaha until my aunt told me to wear one kay unya ug masakit ko. Nice kaayo ang feeling sa bugnaw.

It took me days to realized that I was already in another country.

When I first arrived, it was snowing. I always loved the snow ever since I arrived in '91.

I love the cold weather, i love snow, i love sledding, love skiing, love camping in the winter.

I've adapted to the environmental niche of Northern United States. The cold and snow belt. :P

When I studied abroad in the Ukraine in the spring semester of 2006, I found myself wanting.

I had to take an intensive Ukrainian/Russian Course at the same time I was taking the courses required of my exchange program at the Kiev Mohyla Academy of Law and Sciences.

I was one of 12 Alleghenians that were selected to study abroad in the Ukraine. And reading and writing papers on the Soviet Union and its policies was one thing--discussing it in a history course--giving presentations on the Soviet arms trade, Soviet political alliances etc--but actually living and breathing and eating in a former Soviet Socialist Republic---is totally different story.

When I first arrived to Ukraine, I couldn't help myself from visiting every single Orthodox Church, every castle, reading the histories of each building, edifice, and plaza in downtown Kiev.

Why, I even signed up in a Ukranian Skii trip to the Carpathian Mountains--which was on the border between The Ukraine and Romania, Poland and Moldova.

With my own eyes, we stayed in the small villages of Lvov, at authentic Ukrainian pastries. Honored with Village dancers and festivities.

At first, the language barrier was rather obvious, but within 1-2 weeks time living in Ukraine and taking a course--my fluency in Cyrillic was obvious--and could converse in basic Ukrainian/Russian with common folk. Obviously, what gave me away was my thick American acceent--and Asiatic-Mongolic phenotype. lol.

When I took a trip with some fellow students to the Crimea--we stayed at a Tartar-owned hotel and were served with authentic Turkish/Tatar food. With yalk milk.
A ukranian historian, who gave us a tour, asked me, "Sir, are you a Mongol?"
I answered him, "No, but am A Filipino"

That started our long conversation on the Mongol invasion of Ukraine in the 13th centuries--and the rich history of the Mongol Empire. And to admit, struck my interest. Heavily.

In my life, I only read about Mongol History--or Kievan Russian History--but to actually live and breath it. To touch old forts, keeps, and castles and see the cannon holes that were made by the invading Turkish and Mongol Armies of some 5-6 centuries past, was totally different.

By the time my semester in Ukraine came to an end in August 2006, I found myself wanting. Yet again. Ukraine became almost my adoptive country. The people were courteous, gentle, and accepting. It is definitely one good characteristic of Eastern European Culture.

I look back at my year spent in Ukraine with nostalgia and warmth. Definitley, I would like to visit Ukrainya and Russi'ya in the future.

Yes, read those on a daily basis. And can still read cyrillic. hahaha.
Intimidating at first, but its rather easy to read.

My  younger brother, Don Rico, is taking an Intensive Course right now in Honors Spanish, which is part of his curriculum at his studies in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic High School.

The program the school has, which is rather prestigious, offers high school students an option to study abroad either to Rome, Italy, Heidelburg, Germany or Madrid, Spain.

My brother, who is taking both Honors Spanish and Honors Latin right now told me of his interest to study in Spain. I was ecstatic to hear that.

I think it will be a great experience for him to do so--and to have a better undersanding of the culture, life, language of Mother Spain.

I think it would be excellent, as it would be like walking in the footsteps of Rizal.

My younger Brother:

In Spring of 2007, my younger sister, Angel, studied abroad with a select few Allegheny Collegians to Greece. To study the culture, history, and language.

Angel is reviewing for the MCATs right now. For her Medical Entrance Exams.
