Philippine History / The Significance of Valentine's Day
February 12, 2009, 12:31:19 PM
 A Celebration of Love

The legend surrounding the original Valentine is a saga.

In the third century, Roman Emperor Claudius II decided that his armies would be most effective if they were comprised of young, unmarried men who weren't tied down by wives or families.

To achieve this for his army, Claudius outlawed marriage for men at their fighting prime. A certain Bishop Valentine allegedly saw the injustice of Claudius' proclamation and continued to wed young lovers in secret. When he was discovered, Claudius sentenced Valentine to death and had him imprisoned.

While in prison, Valentine is said to have fallen in love with the jailer's daughter, who visited him regularly in his confinement. He declared his love in his last letter to her before his execution and signed it, "From your Valentine."

Long after Claudius II, a festival in honor of Lupercus, a fertility god, became increasing popular among adolescents. During the mid-February celebration, each young man chose the name of a teenage girl by lottery to be his sexual companion for the coming year.

The Catholic church sought to cease the pagan ritual and looked for a patron saint to attract the attentions of the frolicking youth away from Lupercian traditions. Thus they heralded Valentine, beheaded by Claudius II in 270 AD (possibly to the great loss of a jailer's daughter) the Patron Saint of Love, and the mid-February ceremony morphed over time into our February 14 "St. Valentine's Day."

Today, it is celebrated all round the world by lovers. They exchange cards, gifts, flowers, and promises. They take it as an oppurtunity to proclaim their love for each other. Thus the saint of love has become immortal through these celebrations.

I was assigned  first in the remote and mountainous barangay of Pinalpalan, Malita Davao del in 1981.  We hiked 5 hours from the highway crossing rivers 18 times, descending and ascending on one line trail on slippery mountains.

We arrived Monday afernoon to the station. We started classes the following day, Tuesday. Friday morning, mopauli na. Mosugod ug hike  pababa pauli. Ussually 4 days ra ang klarong klase. This is true in many  far flung areas.

These are contributing factors of our weakening educational system in the country.

Ampalaya con Karne

Ingredients:
¼ kilo lean pork, cut into strips
ampalaya, cut length-wise, de-seed, then cut diagonally into strips
5-6 tbsp of crushed garlic
1 large onion, sliced
1 large tomato, chopped
soy sauce
1 tsp corn starch
salt and pepper

Combine 5 tbsp of soy sauce, a little salt and pepper in a bowl. Add the pork strips to coat and marinate for 30 minutes or more. In another bowl, mix 1/2 cup of water with a pinch of salt, a dash of pepper, cornstarch and about 3 tbsp of soy sauce. Mix well and set aside.

Heat oil in a pan over medium to high heat. Throw in the pork strips and stir-fry for about 3 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add little oil to the pan and heat again. Stir-fry garlic until aromatic. Add in the onion and tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes are mashed and juicy. Pour 1/2 cup of water and bring to boil. Adjust the taste with salt if necessary. Add the ampalaya slices and simmer without stirring until crisp-tender. Do not overcook. Scoop out the ampalaya slices and arranged in a platter. Return the cooked pork plus the reserved marinade mixture to the pan. Mix thoroughly and cook for about 30 seconds or until the sauce thickens. Pour over the ampalaya slices. Serve hot.

The first is abandonment, separation for long years, grave abuses of rights and others. Dili tingali, because he is a priest. There would be no annulment.

nangumbitay. Mao  ne ang gitawag ug immersion process.

Let us plant and grow our own ampalaya plants. Pagka one inch long na ang bunga,
atong baloton ug cellopene o papel. Its easy to grow amplaya without chemical.

Ginoo, dili pagbulagon sila".
bisan kinsa. It was solemnized in the Catholic Church.

Unsay giingon sa Bible: Matthew 19: 6 "So then, they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore, what has God joined together let not man seperate."

Who's Who of Bohol / Re: Re : Tribute to Yoyoy Villame
February 10, 2009, 07:56:01 AM
Who is Yoyoy Villame?

Yoyoy Villame (November 18, 1932 - May 18, 2007) born Roman Tesorio Villame, was a Filipino singer, composer, lyricist, and comedian. Villame was a native of Calape, Bohol and was the father of singer Hannah Villame. He died of cardiac arrest at the Las Piñas Medical Center in Metro Manila on May 18, 2007.

Early life:
Before getting his break in the music industry, Villame was at one point a jeepney driver and at another, an army draftee who fought in the government’s anti-insurgency campaign in Central Luzon. He went back to Bohol to become a bus driver, and there he formed a rondalla band with his fellow bus drivers as band mates. The owner of the bus company took notice of Villame’s efforts, setting up a music studio named Kinamay Records just for him. Villame's first recording was in 1972 and entitled Magellan. It was the beginning of a long list of albums and recordings of his politically inspired songs in Sugboanon, Tagalog and English.

Notable works:
Among his notable works include Butse Kik, a song written from made-up Chinese-sounding words which Villame allegedly came up with by writing down the names of Chinese stores while waiting for a mechanic to fix his broken-down jeepney in Manila's Chinatown. He also wrote Philippine Geography, which lists 77 major islands, provinces, cities, municipalities, and towns in the Philippines from north to south. His long list of hits and his entertaining style of music has earned him the title of "King of Philippine Novelty Songs".

Villame began making movies in the early 1970s, and was noted for his role in the 1974 suspense thriller Biktima. In 2004, Yoyoy played a Visayan troubadour in the critically acclaimed movie, Babae sa Breakwater (Woman of the Breakwater).

You can take Ampalaya Plus and Enduranz at the same time.  There are no other components in Ampalaya Plus and Enduranz inside the capsule that are not plant origin. Ampalaya Plus contain Ampalaya fruit (without the seeds), Banaba and Luyang Dilaw; these are synergistic to optmize the food supplement, helpful in controlling blood sugar coupled with diet and exercise. Enduranz contain Tongkat Ali, Malunggay, Banaba and Gotu Kola, again, to optimize to enhance vitality and physical endurance aside from the effect of “unlocking” the testosterone that is bound with globulin in the blood. Note therefore that testosterone is present in the body but most is unused or unavailable, tongkat ali release the bound testosterone, making it useful, both for stamina, sexual experience and physical development of muscles. It can assist in those people involved in sports and body building.

We do not recommend diabetics to stop their medications, but rather improve their condition using Ampalaya Plus capsule food supplement. Diabetics should monitor their blood sugar levels in both fasting state and 2 hours after meals at least once a week during the initial take of Ampalaya Plus. Monitorig should be for about 3 months to determine if anti-diabetic medications can be reduced. Monitoring for HA1C or glycosilated hemoglobin, which is a marker of diabetic state should also be done 2x a year or at least yearly. Remember that weight control is a key factor in diabetes. Overweight individuals need to reduce weight through exercise and diet management for effective control of diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes but you can contol it in order to live a good quality of life

Tuba in Philippine History
by Cheza Salazar & Emily Urdaneta
In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan, the first colonizer of the Philippines, arrived with troop in one of the provinces in the Philippines and was then offered a bamboo tube containing a drink.

Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer The drink was said to be the sap taken from coconut flowers before they bloom. The sap is mixed with the bark of Rhizophora ocally known as tungog. After some time, it ferments and becomes a mild alcoholic drink having a bittersweet taste.

According to the book Early Mapping of Southeast Asia by Thomas Suarez, the King "had a meal of many food brought, all on porcelain plates, with several vessels of wine." The 'wine' was the tuba of the Filipinos, which Pigafetta called arrack. The Filipino liquor was, perhaps, a similar intoxicant that was enjoyed by Marco Polo in Sumatra, Indonesia, two and a quarter centuries earlier.

Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller This was also served during the Sikatuna-Legazpi blood compact. Legazpi made friends with the Boholanos by performing a blood compact with one of Bohol's famous leaders, Raja Sikatuna. According to historians, the blood compact, also known as sandugo (literally, "one blood"), which implied that "since the same blood now flowed in their veins, they had become members of the same family, bound to observe loyalty to one another." This made Legazpi and Sikatuna brothers by virtue of the rite.

Mindanao Davao archbishop seeks forgiveness for married priest
02/02/2009 | 01:51 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla on Monday asked his flock to forgive one of the priests in the archdiocese who had been married in the past but has since regretted his act.

Capalla issued a statement seeking "compassion and forgiveness" for Fr. Pedro Lamata, after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte disclosed on television that he [Lamata] was a married priest.

"As the spiritual father of all the Catholics in Davao City including my friend Mayor Digong and my priest Fr. Pete as well as others who might be in a similar situation, I would like to appeal for compassionate reconciliation, that is, to forgive and to receive forgiveness," Capalla's statement read.

Excerpts of the statement were posted on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website.

Capalla issued the statement after Duterte said on his television program last weekend that Lamata, now the parish priest of St. Mary's Church in Buhangin district, was married.

The archbishop said Lamata had contracted civil marriage with a woman as a young priest, but has long repented for what he had done.

He said a priest contracting marriage is a serious violation against the Code of Canon Law that merits automatic suspension from the ministry.

Capalla said Lamata had already been suspended from his priestly ministry because of what he did, but has since repented and restored to priestly ministry.

"Since that time until today, like a wounded healer Fr. Pedro Lamata has been a dedicated and energetic priest and pastor, well-loved and respected by many people especially his parishioners and friends, even from among the Muslims and Protestants," Capalla said.

Capalla learned of Lamata's case when he succeeded Archbishop Antonio Mabutas as the Davao archbishop.

He stressed that forgiveness is "being recommended not immediately but when both are predisposed for this Christian act."

"Forgiveness is given and received not to deny the Church's moral teachingsâ€"which must be preached boldlyâ€"but to admit the possible misinterpretation and misinformation that followed certain public utterances," he added. - GMANews

every country in the world including Asian countries like Japan, China, Singapore, South
Korea and others. Even Vietman which , not too long ago was a war zone. It starting now
to overtake us.

The simple solution is to improve the quality of our education and everything else will move
forward.

In the third International Mathematics and Science Study involving 40 countries, our
country ended up third to the last in Mathematics and second to the last in science ahead
only of South Africa. The result reflects the state of our country, which is characterized by
incompetence, and why poverty is prevalent.

To be more competing globally, is it  necessary that we will add one year in college for
all degree courses.?

January 28, 2009, 04:33:15 PM

Boholano is a dialect of Cebuano that is spoken on the island of Bohol in the Philippines, which is a Visayan speech variety, although it is sometimes described as a separate language. Boholano, especially the dialects used in Central Bohol, can be distinguished from other Cebuano dialects by a few phonetic changes. The "y" sound in Cebuano becomes "j" ("iya" in Cebuano becomes "ija"), the "k" sound sometimes becomes "h" ("ako" in Cebuano becomes "aho")the "l" sound sometimes if it is used in the second or following syllable becomes "w" ("kulang" in Cebuano becomes "kuwang"). The dialects used in the coastal areas of Bohol though, including Tagbilaran City, are almost indistinguishable from other Cebuano-speaking areas

Corella - Bohol / Re: Need for inventory of tarsiers
January 28, 2009, 04:17:44 PM
For the past 45 million years, tarsiers have inhabited rainforests around the world, but now they only exist on a few islands in the Philippines, Borneo and Indonesia. In Bohol, the Philippine Tarsier was a common sight in the southern part of the island until the 1960's. Since then, the number has dwindled to as few as an estimated 1000 still left in the wild. Once protected by the humid rainforests and mist-shrouded hills, these mysterious primates struggle to survive as their home is cleared for crop growing.

To date, the Philippine Tarsier Foundation has acquired 7.4 hectares of land in Corella, Bohol for a Tarsier sanctuary. With the Department of Environment and Natural Resources playing an oversight role, the foundation has asked other Bohol towns with Philippines Tarsier populations to donate 20 hectares (49.4 acres) of forestland for conservation.

It also runs a Tarsier Research and Development Center, which serves as a visitor center and venue for research, as well as a habitat preserve. At the sanctuary, a spacious net enclosure keeps 100 Philippine Tarsiers for feeding, captive breeding and display. Here, visitors can observe the Philippine Tarsier in their natural habitat. Within the sanctuary, the Philippine Tarsiers roam freely and all of them have got used to a seven-foot high fence that circumscribes the territory and which serves mainly to protect them from predators like feral cats. At night, tarsiers can be seen climbing out of the fence to forage for food farther into the forest. They return again before daybreak, as if observing a curfew.

Do not visit the caged Tarsiers which are elsewhere on the island (especially Loboc). These are often stolen from the sanctuary and are so traumatised they can no longer breed.

The Tarsier was used by Stephen Spielberg as the inspiration for E.T.

These are conflicting verses in the Bible. It is said that if we confess our sin He is faithful and just
and forgive us , 1 John 1:9. But why is there an unforgivable sin? Its only Christ that can forgive our sins and not the Holy Spirit.

The Unforgivable Sin

But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.
—Mark 3:29, NIV

So in my opinion, the unforgivable sin, the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, consists in misusing one’s training and education in the Scriptures to publicly and knowingly slander the Holy Spirit by misleading people into thinking that He is Satan. Clearly no one who does this can be forgiven, because it is through the Holy Spirit that we are forgiven. Also, no one who thinks that the Holy Spirit is Satan will permit himself to be guided by Him or filled with Him or given gifts by Him. So just as pulling the main breaker in your house means that you can never receive electricity, blaspheming against the Holy Spirit means that you can never receive forgiveness, because it turns off the tap through which forgiveness flows!

This is not the sort of sin that an ordinary person can commit. Blasphemy is deliberate, public slander. In order to commit this sin, you have to be in a position of learned authority.

In any event, to people who are worried about committing this sin, I offer these two observations:

Paul said that he was the worst of all sinners, yet he was not only saved but also made an apostle.
If Paul is the worst of all sinners, it stands to reason that you can’t be worse than he was, and judging from his spiritual career, whatever limits are on your calling are higher than you think.
Repentance is a spiritual gift. (See Acts 5:31, Acts 11:18, and 2 Timothy 2:25)
If you feel remorse for your sins and a desire to change, you are obviously not disconnected from the Holy Spirit; and if you are not disconnected, you cannot possibly have committed the unforgivable sin.
So to those who are troubled: the surest sign that you have not committed the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the very fact that you are worried about it, because that shows that the Holy Spirit is very definitely on speaking terms with you!

Gilbert Casado

Myth on the Origin of Bohol

IJsselstein, Monday, 01 December 2003 16:06:51

As told by an old woman who lived just below the forest of Verde, Duero, Bohol. She was known as Oyang Pinanda, meaning Great Grandma Penanda.

The people were living beyond the sky. One day, the chief's only daughter got sick. The medicine man of the barangay said: "The cure is in the roots of this wild Balili tree. Dig around it and let her arms touch the root".

They dug around the root and they placed the sick girl on the trench, when suddenly, the woman fell through the hole in the sky. Below the sky was a big water. Two gakits saw the woman fall. They caught her lightly on their backs where she rested. The gakits found Big Turtle. When Big Turtle saw the woman, he called a council of all swimming animals. They said: "We must save the woman and make her a home".

The leader commanded the frog: "Dive and bring up dirt from the tree roots." The frog tried and failed.

The mouse tried also and failed. Finally, the Big Toad volunteered: "I will try".

At this, all animals jeered and laugh except Big Turtle who said: "You do well to try. Perhaps you will be lucky".

The old Toad took a long breath and went down, down. At last, a bubble of air came up and the old Toad followed. In its mouth she carried a few grains of sand, which she spread around the edge of Big Turtle's shell. Then an island grew on Big Turtle's back, and it became Bohol island, and the woman lived upon it.

If anyone will examine carefully the shape of the turtle's back , he will find some similarity to the shape of the island of Bohol.

The woman seemed to feel cold. She needed more light to keep her warm. The animals held a council again. Said Little Turtle: "If I could only get up into the sky, I could gather the lightning and make a light".

"You do will try, perhaps you will be luck", said the Big Turtle.

One day, not long after dark, a whirling cloud carried Little Turtle up into the sky where he gathered lightning, and made sun and moon gave light to the woman. During all this time, the woman lived with an old man whom she found on the island. They lived together and gave birth to twin boys. As they grew, one was kind and the other was cruel. Good one prepared Bohol for the coming of people. He made smooth plains, forests, rivers, and many animals. Good one made fishes without scales; Bad one coated them with large scales, hard to scrape off. Bad one went to the west and died. Good one went on improving Bohol and removing evils brought forth by his brother. Last of all, he made Boholanos by taking two lumps of earth and shaped them like human figures. Then he spat on them and they became man and woman. They were endowed by Good One with sterling qualities; like industry, hospitality, obedience, good nature and peace loving.

The two were married and they lived together. Good One gave them seeds of different kinds and planted them. Good One made the great eel, a snake-like fish in the river. He also made the great crab, and let it go wherever it liked. When the great crab bit the great eel, it wriggled, and this movement produced earthquake. That is why Bohol has plenty of crabs (both land and sea), and eels, for they were first created by Good One. Boholanos relish them for food but they always respected the toad. The Boholanos do not eat frogs or toads or land turtles as other Visayans so, no matter how palatable they are as a dish. Many call the old toad grandmother even today. Grandmother toad endowed the Boholanos with sterling qualities.

Therefore , dili makagawas sa Bohol.

Decline of education blamed on “deterioration of English proficiency”
by Grace on November 28th, 2006
Such a “rapid decline in the English competency of Filipinos would eventually erode the competitiveness of the country’s human resources, both here and abroad”… A quote attributed to Senator Edgardo J. Angara.

This was in reference to a bill that passed last month restoring English as the primary language of instruction from high school onwards. The bill was created as Congress’ response to the declining proficiency on the use of the English language in communications. (The Education Department adopted a bilingual program in 1987 to promote the use of Tagalog, the other official language.)

According to a recent government study, only 7 percent of high school graduates can properly read, speak or understand English, and poorly trained teachers are partly to blame, it said.

According to a (separate) study conducted by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, 75 percent of the more than 400,000 Filipino students that graduate from college each year have “substandard English skills.”

Bible Study / Re: Seek Ye First

Matthew 6:33 states,"But seek ye first the kingdom of God,and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

…One of the hardest things a Christian has to learn is to rely onGod's ability and not our strength…our own sufficiency…Relying on self has to literally die…God tells us to put our trust in Him…We may be having problems…God tells us to seek Him out…Prayer is communicating withGod…Through Jesus Christ we can enter into the very presence of God…We can take our failings…our problems…our fears…our needs…any troubles or trials that beset us…and seek God…and He promises He will be found and will answer us…Praying is actually talking to our Father…who holds all the to our every need…our Mediator is Jesus…The fears we have…the troubles we may be experiencing…seem to get stronger more menacing in the dark…in our minds…God directs us to bring them into the light of His presence…"Cast thy burden upon the Lord(Psalm55:22)…God tells us over and over again…"Be not anxious"…He wants us to put our trust in for Him…Look to Him for all our needs…As we seek first the Kingdom of God,and His righteousness…in other words as we pray…talk to God in Jesus' name…as we rely on our Father's ability ..on our Father's. strength…we see the hand of God working in our lives…He opens up the way for us…He makes the paths straight for us…He guides us…He leads us in the way we should go…He answers our prayers …He takes care of our needs…Don't worry about fancy phrases…or fancy prayers…Just seek God out…talk to Him ,really tell Him what is on your heart…tell Him of your joys.. .your problems …the things that bother you or whatever is weighing you down…Hand everything over to Him…seek His answers…prayer is a form of praising God…(Psalm145:18) says, "The Lord is nigh unto all them all them that call upon Him." Amen

Biography of  Barack Obama

Born: 4 August 1961
Birthplace: Honolulu, Hawaii
Best known as: The 44th president of the United States
Name at birth: Barack Hussein Obama II

Barack Obama is the 44th president of the United States. A former Democratic U.S. senator from Illinois, he was elected president on 4 November 2008. Obama has spoken often of his multicultural background: his father was from Kenya, his mother from Kansas, and they met at the University of Hawaii. After his parents divorced and his father returned to Africa, Obama stayed with his mother and was raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. He earned an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in 1983 and a law degree from Harvard in 1991. He then joined the Chicago law firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland, which specialized in civil rights legislation. He also lectured at the University of Chicago.

Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, and then to the U.S. Senate in 2004, beating Republican candidate Alan Keyes. Obama shot to national fame after delivering the keynote speech in support of John Kerry at the 2004 Democratic national convention. The speech established Obama as a rising star in the party. Obama announced in February of 2007 that he would run for president in 2008; his last Democratic opponent, Sen. Hillary Clinton, dropped from the race in June of 2008, and Obama was formally nominated at the party's convention that August. He named Delaware senator Joe Biden to be his running mate, and they defeated Republican nominees John McCain and Sarah Palin in the general election. Obama is the first African-American president in American history. He published the personal memoir Dreams from My Father in 1995, and published a second book, The Audacity of Hope, in 2006. The title of the latter book was also the title of his 2004 keynote speech, and both books won Grammys for best spoken word album.

Extra credit: Obama married the former Michelle Robinson in 1992. They have two daughters: Malia (b. 1998) and Sasha (b. 2001)... Obama's father, also named Barack Obama, was black; his mother, Ann Dunham, was white. Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham (nicknamed "Toot"), died the day before Obama was elected in 2008... Obama attended Occidental College in Los Angeles before completing his undergraduate degree at Columbia... Obama's Senate website described him as "the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review" and "the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate." The previous African-American senators elected by popular vote were Edward Brooke (1967-79, from Massachusetts) and Carol Moseley-Braun (1993-99, from Illinois). Two other African-Americans were chosen by state senates to become U.S. Senators: Hiram Revels (1870-71, from Mississippi) and Blanche Bruce (1875-81, also from Mississippi)... His 2008 Grammy for The Audacity of Hope beat books by two former presidents: Bill Clinton's Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World and Jimmy Carter's Sunday Mornings in Plains: Bringing Peace to a Changing World.
